In brief: Between December 9 and 17, a data center of HP servers was the largest contributor to the Raptoreum cryptocurrency’s blockchain. At its peak, the center’s output exceeded that of every other mining system combined. A later investigation found that the servers were most likely under the control of hackers during the period, who would have made approximately $110,000. At present, the company whose servers were hacked hasn’t made itself known. They’re likely one of the hundred or so major computing groups that have reported themselves as victims of the viral Log4J vulnerability this month, whose number include Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft. The Log4J vulnerability was found in early December to enable the remote execution of arbitrary code, even on systems running as a localhost with no external connections. It’s since broadly been patched, although it continues to plague servers in niche circumstances. It was the sudden disappearance of the HP server group on December 17 indicating that the servers had been patched which revealed they were being used non-consensually. One of them, though, has been continuing to mine; possibly it failed to patch, or else it’s being kept as a honeypot. All of this information is viewable through the Raptoreum blockchain. Its developers are bringing attention to it to dispel the rumor that Raptoreum is unstable. Raptoreum’s base algorithm, GhostRider, is a proof-of-work and proof-of-stake blend that’s intentionally resistant to accelerators and other causes of instability. GhostRider is particularly fond of AMD CPUs because of their large L3 cache. Raptoreum is surprisingly profitable on AMD’s pricy Epyc server CPUs because of their 256 MB of cache on models with 32 or more cores. This likely prompted the hackers to target the HP servers, which were found in an informal investigation conducted by Raptoreum’s developers to be 9000-series and using Epyc processors. During the period in which the HP servers were mining, the address they belonged to accumulated about 30% of the total block reward or 3.4 million RTM. It was worth around $110,000 when the hackers sold half of it on CoinEx but the half they’ve kept has slightly decreased in value since.

Google Fit for iOS has reportedly gained the ability to track and measure heart and respiratory rate using an iPhone's camera. The fitness app can measure a user's heart rate when they apply light pressure on the rear camera lens. It can also work if the user's smartphone doesn't have an active internet connection. The front camera, on the other hand, tracks a user's breaths per minute (BPM). Google Fit's heart and respiratory rate tracking feature was first introduced for Google Pixel smartphones in February. 9to5Google reported that Google Fit on iOS is receiving heart and respiratory rate measurement features. Google tracks subtle movements in a user's body to measure their heartbeat and BPM. Google Fit measures a user's heart rate when they place a finger on the rear camera sensor and apply light pressure. If a user is in a low light environment, the fitness tracking app can use the smartphone's flash to increase accuracy. Alternatively, users can place their hand and iPhone handset in front of a light source. Google measures the heartbeat by tracking "subtle changes in the colour of your fingers" to approximate blood flow. The heart rate algorithms also account for lighting, skin tone, age, and other such factors. The heart-rate measurement takes approximately 30 seconds and previews a graph with beats per minute (BPM). Once the process is complete, the user has the choice to save the vitals to Google Fit. Also with Google Fit for iOS, the selfie camera of an iPhone can track a user's respiratory rate by tracking their breaths per second. For this to work, users need to keep their phone steady and stable with their head and torso clearly visible in the app's display. Prompts on the screen guide the user to "hold still" for about half a minute. Subtle chest movements with computer vision tracking tiny physical movements measure the user's respiratory rate. Alternatively, measurements on Google FIt can also be initiated by heading to the Browse tab and clicking on Vitals. Users also have the option to set reminders for measurements. 9to5Google mentioned that they were able to view the new heart and respiratory rate measurements on iPhone 7 and iPad Pro. The report also said that if users have recently downloaded Google Fit and it doesn't show the new cards, closing the app from the multitasking screen and reopening should make it work. Google first introduced heart and respiratory rate measurement features for Google Fit in February. The features were initially released for Pixel smartphones, reaching other Android smartphones eventually.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series continues, even with a delay to the update for the beloved Final Fantasy VI. The devs are eager to share a bit of what you can expect, though, and have revealed the first official screenshot of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. Technically you might’ve seen this image before, but either way it’s looking like there’s going to be a much bigger visual overhaul for this entry in the series. The image comes from Final Fantasy VI’s opening, where a group of magitek mechs trudge through the snow toward a mountain village. The shot is framed completely differently than it is in the original – the mechs are placed differently in the scene, the vista in the background appears entirely redrawn, and there looks to be a subtle fog effect that’s definitely new. This same screenshot was included in a recent issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, alongside an image of the FFVI’s iconic opera scene. The stage there appears to have gotten an even heavier facelift, with fully 3D background effects that give the game a vibe similar to Square Enix’s own Octopath Traveler. Whether these sorts of facelifts carry across the entire game or are limited to its most memorable scenes remains to be seen, but it looks like we can expect far more new visual tricks than we got with the previous Pixel Remasters.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59787060 A caller has pranked US President Joe Biden by dropping an anti-Biden taunt into their chat during a White House Christmas event. Mr Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were hosting the festive call for families when a father told the president: "Let's go, Brandon." Apparently unaware of the gibe, Mr Biden said he agreed. The term, which has become a rallying cry for many conservatives, is code for a profane insult directed at Mr Biden. The first couple were speaking virtually with children for a White House custom, tracking the journey of Santa's sleigh via the North American Aerospace Defence Command. During Friday's event in the South Court Auditorium of the executive mansion, the Bidens spoke with a family from Oregon: Griffin, 11, Hunter, three, Piper, four, Penelope, two, and their father, Jared. "I assume you're dad," the Democratic president said. "Hi. Yes sir," replied Jared. "OK, Dad, what do you want for Christmas?" asked Mr Biden. "Maybe a quiet night," he replied laughing. line How did 'Let's go, Brandon' start? It all began at the end of a televised Nascar stock car race in Talladega, Alabama, on 2 October. NBC reporter Kelli Stavast was interviewing the winner, driver Brandon Brown, when members of the crowd in the grandstand behind them began chanting an obscenity directed at the president. It was clearly picked up on the broadcast's audio. Whether by mistake or as an attempt to deflect from the swearing on live television, Ms Stavast told Mr Brown the crowd was cheering him on with chants of "Let's go, Brandon." A meme was born. How 'Let's go Brandon' became an anti-Biden jeer line The president said: "You know, Dad, we have a Hunter, too. We have a son named Hunter and a grandson named Hunter." "I didn't know you had a grandson named Hunter, that's cool," said Jared. The president asked how old was Griffin. "I'm 11," Griffin said. He said he wanted a piano. Jared interjected: "I was going to say he has to cut some trees down to get a piano!" Hunter wanted a Nintendo Switch, Piper wanted a Barbie. The chuckling president reminded the children to be in bed by nine o'clock otherwise Santa might not show up. The first lady said: "Have a merry Christmas, have a wonderful Christmas." Mr Biden told Jared: "I hope you have a wonderful Christmas." The father replied: "Yeah, I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas as well. Merry Christmas and let's go, Brandon." The president replied: "Let's go, Brandon. I agree." There was silence. Mr Biden added: "Hey, by the way, are you in Oregon? Where's your home? I think we lost him." According to a recent Gallup poll, only 5% of voters who identify as Republican currently approve of the president's performance. That same poll shows Mr Biden's overall approval rating has dipped to 43%.

Economy Holiday travel plans around the world continue to be disrupted with thousands of flights cancelled for the Christmas weekend as Covid infections surge. Airlines have blamed shortages of healthy staff for the cancellations of nearly 2,400 flights on Friday and more than 2,300 on Saturday. More than 800 of those cancelled on Saturday were to or from US airports. In Europe, travel restrictions are among measures aimed at reducing cases, largely driven by the Omicron variant. Despite early findings that Omicron is milder than other variants, scientists are concerned by the sheer number of infections being recorded. Many of the flight cancellations are the result of airline crews testing positive, or being forced to self-isolate to stem the spread. Further delays and disruption is expected with hundreds more flights cancelled on Sunday, according to website FlightAware. The US, like many countries around the world, has seen a sharp rise in cases. "When we have millions and millions and millions of people, all sick, all together at one time, it doesn't take a large percentage of those people to topple over the hospitals," Dr Hallie Prescott, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, told the New York Times. In the UK - which once again saw record-breaking case numbers confirmed on Friday - volunteers are preparing for a Christmas Day booster jabs push to reduce the impact of Omicron. Across Europe, governments are bringing in their own measures to combat the increase: But in South Africa - where the Omicron variant was first identified - the government has ended Covid contact tracing, except for serious cluster outbreaks or prisons. The health department announced that as most of the po[CENSORED]tion had now been exposed to the coronavirus, the policy is now shifting from a containment strategy to one of mitigation including self-monitoring, mask wearing and social distancing. The US earlier announced it would lift travel restrictions imposed on South Africa and seven other African countries because of concerns about the Omicron variant on 31 December. Travellers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi had been blocked since 29 November. America's top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, warned earlier this week that Christmas travel would increase the spread of the variant even among the fully vaccinated. However, thousands found their plans thrown into disarray as flights across the country were cancelled or delayed. The worst affected US companies are Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines. United Airlines said rising numbers of Omicron cases had "had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation", adding that it was contacting impacted passengers in advance of them coming to the airport. Overall, global airlines have cancelled more 4,700 flights scheduled to take off on Friday and Saturday. In Australia, thousands of festive journeys were affected on Friday with more than 100 domestic flights from Sydney and Melbourne to other cities cancelled. A spokesperson for the Australian airline Jetstar, which accounted for many of the cancellations, said the company had rebooked "the vast majority" of affected passengers "within a few hours of their original departure time so they can get to their destination in time for Christmas". Meanwhile, Britons stranded in Australia have been making the most of the situation by spending time on Sydney's Bondi Beach. "There's no flights home. I'm celebrating in the best way I can. I love being in Australia, I love being in Bondi," Matthew Ryan Johnson said, adding: "Being on the beach for Christmas day is a dream come true." More than 5.3 million people have died with coronavirus worldwide, according to America's Johns Hopkins University. There have been 279 million confirmed cases.

Gnanathesikan (born 2 June 1943), known as Ilaiyaraaja, is an Indian film composer, conductor-arranger, singer and lyricist who works in the Indian film industry, predominantly in Tamil. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian music composers, he is often credited for introducing Western musical sensibilities in the South Indian film musical mainstream.[1][2] He has composed more than 7,000 songs, provided film scores for more than 1,000 movies and performed in more than 20,000 concerts. Ilaiyaraaja is nicknamed "Isaignani" (musical genius) and is often referred to as "Maestro", amongst others by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London.[3] He is known for integrating Indian folk music and traditional Indian instrumentation with western classical music techniques. In 1986, he was the first Indian composer to record film songs through computer for Tamil films for Vikram.[4] He was one of the earliest Indian film composers to use Western classical music harmonies and string arrangements in Tamil film music,[5] and the first South Asian to compose a full symphony.[6][7] He also composed Thiruvasagam in Symphony (2006), the first Indian oratorio. Ilaiyaraaja is a recipient of five National Film Awards—three for Best Music Direction and two for Best Background Score. In a 2013 poll conducted by CNN-IBN celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema, Ilaiyaraaja was voted as the all-time greatest film-music director of India. According to Achille Forler, board member of the Indian Performing Right Society, the kind of stellar body of work that Ilaiyaraaja has created in the last 40 years should have placed him among the world's top 10 richest composers, somewhere between Andrew Lloyd Webber ($1.2 billion) and Mick Jagger (over $300 million).

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-59768366 If you have a sore throat, runny nose and a headache there is a good chance it will be Covid, warn UK researchers. The Zoe Covid study team has been tracking the pandemic using feedback from the general public, and estimates half of people with cold-like symptoms actually have Covid. They describe an "explosion" of Covid cases over the last week, driven by the new Omicron variant. About 144,000 people a day are catching it and then feeling unwell. For most, Covid is a mild disease. Some get no symptoms at all. But it can still cause very serious illness in some people, including those who have not been vaccinated. If you have cold-like symptoms, take a Covid test, says lead scientist Prof Tim Spector. "The number of new symptomatic cases has exploded over the last week," he said. "For most people, an Omicron positive case will feel much more like the common cold, starting with a sore throat, runny nose and a headache. You only need to ask a friend who has recently tested positive to find this out. "We need to change public messaging urgently to save lives." The UK reported 106,122 new Covid cases on Wednesday - exceeding 100,000 on a single day for the first time. With infections doubling every two to three days, experts say, health officials are concerned about the pressure this could put on the NHS. Preliminary studies suggest the Omicron coronavirus variant is milder, with fewer people getting severely ill than with other variants. But a massive wave of infections would still mean many people needing hospital care, as well as lots of doctors and nurses being off sick with Covid. People are being advised to do rapid Covid tests before meeting up with friends and family at Christmas. Lateral flow tests help to find cases in people who may have no symptoms but are still infectious, meaning they can give the virus to others. Latest estimates suggest that more than 1.3 million people in the UK would have tested positive for coronavirus in the week ending 16 December. This is the highest level of infections recorded by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) since the survey started. This is 2.1% of the po[CENSORED]tion, or one in 45 people in the latest week in England. The ONS say the trends for estimated Covid-19 infections increased in England and Scotland, and were uncertain in Wales and Northern Ireland. The rates of people estimated to be testing positive for coronavirus across the UK in that seven-day period were:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-59765371 Australia's government will pay A$2m (£1.1m; $1.4m) in compensation to hundreds of Aboriginal people who said a welfare scheme was racist. The "work for the dole" scheme required people in remote outback communities to work up to 25 hours a week to receive income benefits. But its strict requirements meant that many vulnerable people were pushed further into poverty, critics said. The government settled a lawsuit but did not admit it was at fault. Several people had struggled to survive after having their payments cut off, advocates said. Australia controversially requires welfare recipients to record job searches and other tasks in order to receive payments. But advocates say these requirements disadvantage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in some of Australia's poorest and most isolated communities. Residents there have limited access to phone, internet and transport services. Many face additional language, cultural, education and health barriers. Critics argued the Community Development Programme (CDP), introduced in 2015, was racist because it set harsher rules than other welfare schemes. Over 80% of those using the CDP were Aboriginal Australians. A group representing 680 people in 10 communities in Western Australia sued the government, arguing the scheme breached anti-discrimination laws. Damien McLean, president of the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku, said locals had to travel 1,000km (620 miles) to the nearest town centres of Alice Springs or Kalgoorlie to represent themselves in person at a welfare office. They were also required to work double the hours of those in cities and were 25 times more likely to face penalties, the Australian National University found. The Federal Court of Australia found that people in the lawsuit had lost about A$1,800 each on average, due to the programme's conditions. Critics had previously described the scheme as "modern-day slavery". People were typically paid just A$10 an hour - half the national minimum wage. Earlier this year, the government announced it would axe the programme and introduce a new one by 2023. Last year, it was also forced to pay a A$1.2bn settlement over a welfare policy dubbed "Robodebt" that had been ruled illegal.

Musician Name: Jagjit Singh Birthday / Location: 8 February 1941 | Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner State, British India Main instrument: Vocals, harmonium, tanpura, piano, tabla Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations: --- Best Performance: -- Other Information: Jagjit Singh (born Jagmohan Singh Dhiman; 8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was an Indian composer, singer and musician. Dubbed "The Ghazal King" or "King of Ghazals", he composed and sang in numerous languages and is credited for the revival and po[CENSORED]rity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian classical music, his style of composing and gayaki (singing) is considered as Bol-pradhan, one that lays emphasis on words. He highlighted this in his music for films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth (1982), and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Singh is considered to be the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning five decades and many albums, the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining. Singh's 1987 album, Beyond Time, was the first digitally recorded release in India.[1] He was regarded as one of India's most influential artists. With sitar player Ravi Shankar and other leading figures of Indian classical music and literature, Singh voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India and lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India's traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians. He lent active support to several philanthropic endeavours such as the library at St. Mary's School, Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA. Singh was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2003 and in February 2014, the government released a set of two postal stamps in his honour.[2]
