https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-59835675 India is bracing for a third wave of coronavirus as its largest cities - the capital Delhi and financial hub Mumbai - see a surge in cases. India reported 58,097 cases on Wednesday, a six-fold rise in a week that experts say is fuelled by the Omicron variant. Nearly a third of those infections came from Delhi and Mumbai. Both cities have brought back curfews and other restrictions to halt the spread of the virus. Dr NK Arora, head of India's vaccine task force, told NDTV on Monday that the third wave of the pandemic had already begun in the country, adding that the "whole wave seems to be driven by a new variant... Omicron". The country has reported more than 2,000 Omicron cases - Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, is leading the tally (653), followed by Delhi (464). Delhi's health minister Satyendar Jain has said that 81% of Covid samples in the city tested positive for Omicron. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - one of India's major hospitals - in Delhi has cancelled winter leave for doctors, according to reports. The rising infections are a sombre reminder of the devastating second wave India faced in April and May - daily averages of about 400,000 cases at the peak of the crisis. Delhi was among the hardest hit cities as hospitals across the country ran out of beds and life-saving oxygen, leaving patients gasping for breath. Crematoriums were overwhelmed, forcing people to hold mass burials in open spaces. Caseloads did drop eventually - for many months the national tally remained well under 10,000 cases a day. Now as cases rise again, state governments are re-imposing restrictions. Omicron: India aims to avoid 'pandemic roulette' Preliminary data suggests that fewer people infected with Omicron need hospital treatment when compared with other variants. But experts advise caution as a surge in cases could put hospitals under strain. On Tuesday, authorities in Delhi imposed a weekend curfew, with all non-essential activity banned between Friday night and Monday morning. The capital last week closed gyms and cinemas, as well as imposing an overnight curfew in an effort to stem the spread. The weekend curfew decision was announced hours after the city's chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tested positive, saying he was isolating with mild symptoms. Mr Kejriwal has been attending massive election rallies in other states, even as cases continue to rise in his city. On Monday, he attended an event in Uttarakhand where many, including those sharing the stage with him, were seen without a mask. Several other politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have held similar rallies in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in the past few weeks in which thousands - many without masks - have participated with little regard to social distancing. The three states, along with Goa and Manipur, go to the polls in February and March. Ahead of India's second wave too, political parties flouted Covid guidelines in states such as West Bengal where elections were due. The mega rallies were blamed for helping the virus spread. But the Election Commission indicated last week that this year's polls may not be postponed even amid the rise in cases. Meanwhile, authorities in Mumbai said they will consider imposing a lockdown if daily cases cross the 20,000 mark. The city recorded 10,860 new cases on Tuesday, a 34.37% jump from the previous day. Cases are also rising in Goa, a tourist haven, where authorities have imposed a night curfew - it reported 592 new infections on Monday. Goa saw massive gatherings and parties over Christmas and New Year's Eve, which experts say has contributed to the spike in infections. India's government is yet to announce booster doses, although Mr Modi has said precaution doses will be given from 10 January to frontline workers and those above the age of 60 with comorbidities. About 63% of India's eligible adults have been fully vaccinated and more than 90% have received at least one jab since the beginning of the vaccination drive in January 2021. India has so far reported more than 34 million cases and 482,000 deaths from coronavirus, although experts say the true toll could be much higher.

Auto Inobat Auto, a “premium battery technology and manufacturing company”, has received a €10 million (£8.35m) investment from Ideanomics, an American EV group that specialises in commercial fleet operations. The deal values Inobat at the mid-hundreds of millions of pounds. The Ideanomics cash injection follows similar deals that mining conglomerate Rio Tinto and Indian battery group Amara Raja made with Inobat late last year. The news comes as Ideanomics seeks to derisk its battery supply chain across its mobility companies. Ideanomics president Robin Mackie said: “We have been seeking an innovative battery partner to support our electrification strategy. We hope that this investment and partnership will help futureproof our battery and supply needs to realise our commitment towards making EV the natural mobility successor." The main thrust of the deal is towards commercial EVs, Ideanomics’s core business. Inobat CEO Marian Bocek said: “This strategic partnership allows us to expand our battery technology for both on- and off-road commercial EVs while increasing our capacity and future opportunities to support the US e-mobility market.” The focus for this particular deal remains the US, with both companies working together to “develop, produce, and distribute integrated battery pack solutions for the US market”. Although Inobat isn't yet a household name, it can count ex-Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer as its vice-chairman. This deal is the latest in a long line of cash injections into EV start-ups and comes as Inobat seeks to build on its ambitions to open further 'gigafactories' throughout Europe from 2024. It's currently building a research-and-development centre and a pilot battery facility in Voderady, Slovakia, with a view to completing both by the end of 2022. Other European firms are also looking to open battery 'gigafactories' as manufacturers rush to build more EVs. Northvolt, a Swedish company that has backing from BMW, Volkswagen and Volvo, started producing batteries in 2021, while Britishvolt has broken ground on its gigafactory in Blyth, England. However, the main EV battery supply chain remains based in Asia.

The song was received with a frenzy and the electrifying performance was nostalgic for the first generation fans and won over the youth today.[4] In 2018, the band created a cricket anthem for Pakistan Super League team, Peshawar Zalmi. The song titled "Hum Zalmi"[5] bought them critical praise from music critics to cricket fans alike. It was a fusion of their heavy metal signature music and the folk Peshawar beats to create a fresh and unique sound. A modern take on the traditional Pashtun Attun dance was used in the music video to symbolize a war cry. On March 23 (Pakistan Day) 2018, the band made history with their single, "Zindabad" - The Drum Anthem. The band collaborated with 42 top drummers and percussionist of Pakistan for this project. Something to look forward to: Along with announcements like its latest flagship and entry-level graphics cards, Nvidia also revealed updates to its top-of-the-line laptop GPUs at CES 2022. The company promises these are definitive laptop gaming upgrades, but they are pricey. The GeForce 3080 Ti is the first 80 Ti-tier card to ever come to laptops, with 16GB of what Nvidia calls the fastest ever GDDR6 RAM in a notebook—even faster than the desktop Titan RTX. Entry-level laptops featuring the 3080 Ti will set you back $2500. The GeForce 3070 Ti is a little more affordable but still starts at a hefty $1500. It is supposed to out-perform the RTX 2070 Super by 70 percent, and Nvidia touts its performance at 1440p. Nvidia announced 160 new 2022 laptops featuring RTX 30 series GPUs, including models from HP, Razer, and Acer. Some of them have added DDR5 RAM. The new 30-series laptops start at $800 with screens ranging up to 1440p, some with G-sync. All RTX 30s, including 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti laptops, launch on February 1. Nvidia also announced the fourth generation of its Max Q technologies for increasing efficiency and laptop battery life, including CPU optimizer, rapid core scaling, and battery boost 2.0. TechSpot’s reviews of recent higher-tier Nvidia laptops like the 3080 and 3070 suggest buying them only if you will be out-and-about with them, rating them as good laptop GPUs but inferior to their desktop counterparts.

The big picture: Most of the tech news cycle is focused on CES 2022 right now, naturally, but the start of a new month marks another occasion: the latest Steam Hardware and Software survey results. December was a bumper month for Nvidia’s Ampere line, with the RTX 3060 gaining more users than any other card while the Ti variant and the RTX 3070 experienced significant gains, too. We also saw a rare drop in the CPU share for AMD, which could be explained by the po[CENSORED]rity currently being enjoyed by Intel’s latest Alder Lake CPUs. During December, the number of survey participants with an RTX 3060 in their PCs increased by 0.57%, more than any other GPU on the list. The Ti version of that card was up 0.30%, while the RTX 3070 saw gains of 14%. It seems some people can find/afford Nvidia’s most recent graphics cards, though they may be buying them from eBay. As for AMD, the Radeon RX 6700 remains the only RDNA 2 card on the main GPU list. It’s found in 0.19% of participants’ PCs, which is actually down 0.01% month-over-month. The increase in RTX 3000-series users means the RTX 3060 is now the 12th most-po[CENSORED]r card on the list with a 1.87% share, while the RTX 3070 (1.94%) remains the top Ampere product in 11th place. The GTX 1060 stays in the number one position, but the fourth-place RTX 2060, which was up 0.40% last month, continues to make great strides. The processor section of the survey saw a changing trend in December. Having seen its user share increase every month since August, AMD fell by 0.82% over the last four weeks. Could this be the Alder Lake effect? Intel’s latest CPUs have been receiving plenty of rave reviews, and they were likely on many PC fans’ Christmas wishlists. Elsewhere, Windows 11 continued to chip away at Windows 10’s lead in the OS section, increasing its share by 1.87% to 10.15%. The Oculus quest cemented its dominant position at the top of the VR Headset chart with a 3.30% gain, and most users have 8GB of VRAM in their graphics cards. Intel, Nvidia, and AMD are all holding their respective CES 2022 events today, where we’re expecting to see new CPUs and GPUs announced that could shake up the Steam survey over the next few months. But right now, it’s Intel and Nvidia who will be smiling.

Since the release of its massive Update 41, Early Access zombie game Project Zomboid has blown up into a genuine hit, almost a decade after it first launched. Its developers, The Indie Stone, aren’t slowing down and resting on their undead laurels. In a new interview, the devs say they’re hard at work with Project Zomboid’s next major addition: human NPCs. The Indie Stone’s managing director and coder Chris Simpson spoke with NME about Update 41, as well as plans for the game going forward. The interview provides some fascinating insight into the development of the latest update, as well as the devs’ feelings about having spent so long in Early Access. But Simpson also identifies NPCs as the studio’s next major goal for Zomboid. It’s a feature fans have been waiting for years to see in the game. “We’re planning on doing NPCs pretty much next,” Simpson says. “Although there may be smaller builds in between, the next big thing that we’re working toward and talking about in the new year is going to be NPCs.” Simpson says NPCs have been a hot issue for the Project Zomboid community for a long time – they’re both the most-requested feature, and their absence has been the source of the most criticism the Indie Stone has received. Simpson says the original plan had been to add in wildlife before tackling NPCs, but that update would have necessarily involved tipping their hand for behaviours intended for the larger NPC update. The team decided to plough ahead with NPCs first, and as Simpson says, “I don’t think that will upset too many people”. It’s an exciting idea: Update 41 has added areas of Louisville to the map, but Zomboid’s main settings of West Point and Muldraugh, Kentucky, are located just outside the US Army base Fort Knox, which means eventually, NPC soldiers could be guarding and staffing locations in the military compound – which is presumably where “the Knox event” that kicked off the zombie plague took place. New players should temper their expectations – it’s unlikely that NPCs will arrive, even in an early form, in Project Zomboid any time soon. The Indie Stone works slowly and deliberately, adding opt-in beta branches when it wants to invite the community to try out new features it’s working on. Fortunately, thanks to Update 41, there’s plenty of new territory to explore in Project Zomboid while we wait. Get involved in the conversation by heading over to our Facebook and Instagram pages. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-59858887 A critical incident has been declared at four Lincolnshire hospitals because of staff shortages due to Covid-19. United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust said it was taking "additional steps to maintain services" at all its hospitals in Lincoln, Boston and Grantham. The trust's medical director, Dr Colin Farquharson, said there were "significant staffing pressures due to absence related to Covid-19". But he said essential services "remain fully open". Last month, visiting restrictions were brought in at Lincoln County, Grantham and District, Pilgrim Hospital Boston and County Hospital Louth to slow the spread of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus. 'Unprecedented' In a statement, Dr Farquharson said: "As a result of significant staffing pressures due to absence related to Covid-19, we are having to take additional steps to maintain services. "Our staff continue to work exceptionally hard and we would like to reassure our patients and the public that in spite of the challenges faced, essential services remain fully open for anyone who needs them, so people should continue to come forward for care." He added people could "reduce pressure on health services" by getting a booster vaccine. According to a leaked email seen by The Sunday Times, the trust declared a critical incident on Saturday night "due to extreme and unprecedented workforce shortages". It issued an "urgent appeal" for clinical and non-clinical staff to offer extra time supporting colleagues "over the next 72 hours". It also asked staff to "consider limiting social contacts with people outside of work".

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-59857168 An agreement between Virginia Giuffre and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which could be key to a civil case involving the Duke of York, is to be made public for the first time later. The 2009 settlement between Epstein and Ms Giuffre is to be released on Monday after an order by judges in the US. Prince Andrew's lawyers believe it could release him from liability in the case brought by Ms Giuffre, who accuses him of sexual assault when she was 17. He has consistently denied the claims. Andrew B Brettler, who represents the duke, had argued at a previous hearing that the "settlement agreement" would end Ms Giuffre's lawsuit against Andrew. The settlement was reached between Ms Giuffre, also known as Virginia Roberts, and the prince's former friend and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019. Mr Brettler had previously told a New York hearing the agreement "releases Prince Andrew and others from any purported liability arising from the claims Ms Giuffre asserted against Prince Andrew here". What are the accusations against Prince Andrew? Prince Andrew asked to prove he could not sweat What Maxwell trial means for Prince Andrew US District Judge Lewis A Kaplan, who is presiding over the civil case, is due to hold a video teleconference on Tuesday when a request by the duke's legal team to dismiss the case will be heard. Ms Giuffre is suing the Queen's son for allegedly sexually assaulting her in London, New York and the Virgin Islands when she was a teenager. She is seeking unspecified damages, but there is speculation the sum could be in the millions of dollars. She claims she was trafficked by disgraced financier Epstein to have sex with Andrew when she was 17 and a minor under US law. Andrew, 61, has denied all the allegations, telling BBC Newsnight in 2019: "It didn't happen. I can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever." Judge Kaplan last week denied a motion from Andrew's lawyers to halt the civil proceedings while the issue of where Ms Giuffre, now 38 and thought to be residing in Australia, lives is dealt with. Last week, Ms Giuffre's lawyers said they were seeking proof of Andrew's claim he had an inability to sweat, which he said showed a "problem" with her account of an evening with the duke. "I didn't sweat at the time because I had suffered what I would describe as an overdose of adrenalin in the Falklands War when I was shot at and it was almost impossible for me to sweat," he told Newsnight. Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend and Andrew's friend, faces the rest of her life in jail after she was convicted last week of helping to procure teenage girls for the disgraced financier to sexually abuse.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/59838330 Captain Joe Root says England have the opportunity to "stand up in adversity" amid their Ashes defeat and Covid complications. England are 3-0 down going into the fourth Test in Sydney. Head coach Chris Silverwood is one of a number of staff in isolation, while coaching reinforcements and net bowlers have been withdrawn because of Covid. "It has made things disjointed and challenging but it is a chance to come together," Root told BBC Sport. Along with Silverwood, pace bowling coach Jon Lewis, spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel and strength and conditioning coach Darren Veness are absent. Former England one-day captain Adam Hollioake was due to link up with the squad to assist with coaching, but was ruled out after being deemed a Covid close contact. On Sunday, the tourists' training session was disrupted when a local net bowler was found to have tested positive, leading to all the net bowlers being withdrawn. England have used all the backroom team - including the media manager and medical staff - in training sessions, with players also coaching each other. Silverwood tests positive for Covid-19 Quiz: How well do you remember Ashes Tests at Sydney? Ashes fixtures & results "We're trying to manage it as best we can," Root told BBC Sport. "In terms of practice, it's obviously going to look very different. "We've all just got to be good human beings, good professionals, help each other out where we can and try and get the best possible prep going into these last two games." An innings defeat in the third Test in Melbourne ensured England lost the Ashes series at the earliest possible opportunity. They are now looking to avoid a third 5-0 whitewash in Australia in 15 years, during which time they have also suffered a 4-0 defeat. Root, 31, said: "Whether it be putting pride back into the badge, whether it be making sure that we get Test Championship points, [and] for individuals making sure that they're pushing hard to cement their spots in the team. There's a huge amount to play for this group of players. "We've got to stay tight, we've got to stay together. And we've got to put in a performance on one of the great Test venues in world cricket." Root will captain in a Test for 60th time at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday (23:30 GMT on Tuesday), passing the England record of 59 set by his predecessor Alastair Cook. The Melbourne defeat ensured Root has now presided over three Ashes series without a win, and in the immediate aftermath of that game he would not be drawn on his future as skipper. He has since been backed by all-rounders Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes - the latter England's vice-captain and the most likely replacement. 'Joe is a great cricketer with a great cricket brain' Stokes has no ambition to be England captain When asked again, Root once more deferred any discussion on his role. "I need to make sure that my full focus is on these two games," said Root. "First and foremost, I need to try to get the best out of the group, make sure we put in those performances we keep banging on about out there on the field. "We'll worry about the captaincy at the end of the series. I've got two big games here to manage well." Meanwhile, Australia vice-captain Steve Smith said the hosts have been surprised by pace bowler Stuart Broad's peripheral role in this series. Broad, England's second-highest Test wicket-taker of all time, has played only one of the first three Tests, missing out in Brisbane and Melbourne where the pitches could have suited his style. "We have been surprised. There have probably been two wickets that would have suited him well," said Smith. "He bowled well in Adelaide and he's always been a good contest for me. Him and Jimmy Anderson together have been world-class performers for a long time. Maybe we'll see them together this week."
