Photograph: Jerome Murray/Alamy As we climb the river wall, our steps laboured by the steep bank, the harsh wind suddenly hits us so fast it takes our breath away. The Butley river, with its saltmarsh and mud banks, sweeps ahead on my left. To my right, Boyton Marshes stretches into a bright white horizon. These are the famous Suffolk skies: wide and open. Continuing on the Suffolk coast path, curlew, Cetti’s warblers and skylarks call. As I look ahead, redshanks busily scour the mud on the river edge. Oystercatchers fly past us, following the river, and a marsh harrier glides above one of the islands in the distance. We sit just off the path, out of the wind, to drink hot tea from a flask. Signs of spring are everywhere: a dozen black-tailed godwits, each poised on one leg, heads tucked under a wing, their rusty red chests aflame with summer plumage. And flitting above the reeds, three swallows – the first I have seen this year. ‘These are the famous Suffolk skies: wide and open.’ Photograph: Handout As we resume our walk, a spoonbill flies overhead. These spectacular, once scarce birds can now be often spotted on the coasts of East Anglia during the summer months, and some breed elsewhere in the UK. It is a privilege to have them on my doorstep, and it’s amusing how a bird can look slightly comical yet graceful at the same time. For me this is still trumped, however, by the two small birds that fly across our path in a flash of black, white, gold and amber. They disappear behind dense reeds and bramble. We wait, peeping through our scope, holding our breath – they are the unmistakable bearded tits. Harlequin-like markings on the male, soft buff-coloured faces on the female. Their sleek, streamlined bodies balance between the stems and they move quickly, making their distinctive soft “pinging” call as they work their way along the reeds, appearing for only seconds at a time before diving back into the foliage. Could they be looking to nest? Do they already have a nest? I hope so. So as to not disturb them, we creep away softly. Later that day, I’m delighted to read that these charismatic birds are not actually a tit; they belong to their own family, the Panuridae. The Iran-backed group said it acted in retaliation for an earlier Israeli attack in Lebanon killed one of its members [Mahmoud Zayyat/AFP] The Lebanese group Hezbollah says it has launched drone attacks on Israeli bases north of the city of Acre in retaliation for the killing of one of its fighters, marking the deepest attack into Israeli territory since the Gaza war began. Hezbollah launched “a combined air attack using decoy and explosive drones that targeted” two Israeli bases halfway between Acre and Nahariyya, it said in a statement on Tuesday. The Iran-backed group said it acted in retaliation for an earlier Israeli attack killing one of its fighters. It published what appeared to be a satellite photo, with the location of the attack symbolised by a flash with a red circle around it. The Israeli military said it had no knowledge of any of its facilities being hit by Hezbollah, but had said earlier that it intercepted two “aerial targets” off Israel’s northern coast. Later on Tuesday, Lebanon’s official news agency NNA said at least two people were killed and six others injured after an Israeli air raid hit a residential area in the southern Lebanese town of Hanin. “Israeli warplanes struck a two-storey house with two air-to-surface missiles, completely destroying the building which was inhabited by a family that had not left the town since Israeli attacks began,” NNA said. A separate Israeli attack overnight killed Muhammad Attiya, a fighter in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Forces, the military said. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah on the claim. Since Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack triggered Israel’s war on Gaza, there have been near-daily cross-border exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli army. Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump sits in Manhattan state court in New York, Monday, April 23, 2024 [Brendan McDermid/Pool Photo via AP] The second day of Donald Trump’s criminal trial began Tuesday with New York prosecutors expected to highlight a “catch and kill scheme” allegedly hatched by the former president and the publisher of the National Enquirer to limit the damage done by unflattering revelations. The plan was struck in the run-up to the 2016 election when Trump was locked in a tight race with Hilary Clinton, his Democratic rival for the White House. Prosecutors have said the attempt at damage control led to hush-money payments made to former adult film star Stormy Daniels, who said she had a sexual relationship with Trump. The Manhattan District Attorney alleged that Trump falsified business documents to cover up the payments, and that the payment was part of a broader scheme to influence the 2016 election. Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee, has denied that he had an affair with Daniels. He has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents related to the payments made to Daniels, representing the first time in US history that an ex-president has faced criminal charges. The falsification charges specifically relate to the alleged mislabelling of repayments that Trump made to his lawyer, Michael Cohen, who had fronted the $130,000 paid to Daniels in return for her silence. But for the felony charges to stick, prosecutors must convince a jury that the misrepresentations were done with the intent to commit another crime. In opening statements on Monday, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Colangelo indicated that prosecutors would focus on an alleged wider scheme to “undermine the integrity” of 2016 presidential election. Trump’s defence, meanwhile, said the former president is innocent, with his lawyer, Todd Blanche, arguing that “there’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election … It’s called democracy”. Prosecutors began to question David Pecker, the National Enquirer’s former publisher and a longtime friend of Trump’s, on Tuesday in an attempt to establish a pattern of Trump’s behaviour. Beyond the payments to Daniels, prosecutors have also detailed two other instances where Trump allegedly sought to stifle negative stories through his connection with Pecker, who edits the tabloid that is known for publishing accounts of scandalous celebrity affairs and misbehaviour. The payments included $150,000 by American Media – the parent company of the National Enquirer – to Karen McDougal, who also alleged an affair with Trump. The company has acknowledged the payment was specifically used to buy and bury the story. American Media also paid a Trump Tower doorman $30,000 for a story claiming Trump had fathered a child out of wedlock. The defence has argued that neither hush-money payments nor the so-called “catch and kill” schemes are in and of themselves illegal. Prosecutors have alleged that the coordination between Pecker and Trump – and the timing of the catch-and-kill scheme in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential election when Trump was facing political fallout from a separate scandal – were evidence of a larger criminal effort under New York law “to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means”. They have also argued the falsifications of documents related to the hush money were paid to cover up violations of federal campaign finance law and New York state tax law. But before any witness took the stand on Tuesday, the proceedings began with a debate about a gag order Judge Juan Merchan placed on Trump last month, which prohibited the former president from speaking or posting on social media about any of the potential witnesses in the trial. Prosecutors alleged Trump has repeatedly violated that order and called for Merchan to take action against him. The defence claimed Trump’s social media posts were defending against personal attacks. In one back-and-forth, Judge Merchan warned Trump’s lawyer Blanche “You’re losing all credibility with the court.” During a break, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to condemn the judge as “highly conflicted”. “Everybody is allowed to talk and lie about me, but I am not allowed to defend myself?” he wrote. “This is a kangaroo court; the judge should recuse himself.” While Trump currently faces three other criminal cases, the New York trial is the only one expected to finish before the November election. In Georgia, Trump faces state charges related to an alleged campaign to pressure elections officials to change the state’s vote count in the 2020 election.
