An explosion inside a coal mine in northern Turkey has killed at least 40 people and left 11 others hospitalized, state news media reported on Saturday. The explosion took place in the Black Sea town of Amasra in Bartin province on Friday, trapping dozens beneath the rubble of the blast. Eleven wounded workers were treated in hospitals, state news agency Anadolu said citing a statement from the country’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu. Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez said that a fire that broke out after the blast is largely under control, Anadolu reported. Rescuers are working through the night as the death toll rises, with video footage from the scene showing miners emerging blackened and bleary-eyed. There were 110 people in the mine at the time of the explosion, said Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who traveled to Amasra to coordinate the search and rescue operation. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. The blast inside the coal mine killed at least 40 people, according to state news. The Supreme Court will hear two pivotal cases later this term about online speech that could significantly shape the future of social media, the court announced on Monday. One case, Gonzalez v. Google, is set to consider whether tech platforms’ recommendation algorithms are protected from lawsuits under a commonly invoked legal shield tech companies have used to nip other types of content-moderation suits in the bud. The second case, Twitter v. Taamneh, will decide whether social media companies can be sued for allegedly aiding and abetting an act of terrorism, when the platforms have hosted unrelated user content that generally expresses support for the group behind the violence. Both cases have significant ramifications for the tech industry, which has come under increasing pressure over content moderation in recent years amid calls by lawmakers and President Joe Biden for the companies’ liability shield, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, to be trimmed back. The Court’s orders on Monday set the stage for a possible judicial narrowing of that law, which has been heavily criticized by members of both parties over platforms’ handling of content but that industry defenders say is critical to keeping online services free from spam, hate speech and other legal-but-objectionable content. Google and Twitter didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. In the recent past, some justices, including conservatives Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, have expressed interest in hearing cases about online content moderation that could allow the court to weigh in on an increasingly influential sphere of public life. By taking up Gonzalez, the court opens up fresh risks for platforms including Google, Meta and Twitter. In that case, the court is expected to decide whether Google can cite Section 230 to avoid liability over its YouTube algorithms having recommended videos that were created by supporters of the terrorist group ISIS. An eventual ruling against Google could expose major parts of the tech giant’s business, not to mention other tech companies that use automatic recommendation engines, to new lawsuits. In the Twitter case, the justices will review whether hosting generally pro-ISIS content – unrelated to a specific terrorist attack by the organization – may constitute “knowing” and “substantial assistance” to the group in violation of a federal anti-terrorism law, particularly in the face of company policies and efforts to block that material. A ruling against Twitter could mean that tech platforms may not cite Section 230 to avoid lawsuits alleging violations of the US Anti-Terrorism Act, effectively circumscribing the liability shield. Conversely, a ruling in Twitter’s favor could potentially uphold Section 230’s broad scope by overturning a lower-court ruling that found tech platforms can be held liable under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Researchers in China have uncovered the remains of a 439 million-year-old shark-like fish with unusual features that "set it apart from any known vertebrate," or animal with a backbone. The bizarre creature, which is covered in spines and "bony armor," is the oldest undisputed jawed vertebrate ever discovered, a new study reports. Scientists discovered the remains of the newly identified, extinct species at the Rongxi Formation, a renowned fossil site in Guizhou province, in southern China. The researchers named the species Fanjingshania renovata, after a nearby mountain known as Fanjingshan. The team collected thousands of fossilized skeletal fragments, scales and teeth from the site and then painstakingly recreated what the ancient fish might have looked like. Their findings were published online Sept. 28 in the journal Nature(opens in new tab). F. renovata belongs to an extinct group of shark-like creatures known as acanthodians, also called "spiny sharks," which have spiny fins and bony plates surrounding their shoulder areas. On the fish family tree, acanthodians lie somewhere between chondrichthyans, which include modern sharks and rays, and osteichthyans, or bony fish. Acanthodians have shark-like body plans, but their bony skin plates and skeletons are similar to those of bony fish. Researchers suspect that F. renovata may be a close relative of the undiscovered common ancestor of the two groups. Related: Great white-shark-sized ancient fish discovered by accident from fossilized lung CLOSE The newfound species dates back to the Silurian period, between 443.8 million and 419.2 million years ago, and is around 15 million years older than the oldest known jawed fish, making it the oldest jawed vertebrate to date, researchers said in a statement(opens in new tab). Scientists are especially interested in the emergence of jawed fish because their evolution was a major point in the diversification of vertebrates. The discovery will help researchers "gain much-needed information about the evolutionary steps leading to the origin of important vertebrate adaptations, such as jaws, sensory systems, and paired appendages," study co-author Min Zhu, a paleontologist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in the statement. A unique specimen Although F. renovata does share multiple characteristics with other acanthodians, the researchers said it also had features that set it apart from others in the group. One of the main differences is in the fish's shoulder armor, which covers a greater area than the armor of other acanthodians and is fused to multiple spines, the researchers wrote. Image 1 of 3 The creature's spiny fins were also covered in unusual teeth-like scales that the team suspects would fall out in clumps and regrow. Similar scales are seen in modern sharks, but they do not get replaced in this way, according to the statement. The fossilized bones of F. renovata also show evidence of a process known as resorption, when parts of bones or teeth break down and are later replaced, often during the organism's development. "This level of hard tissue modification is unprecedented in chondrichthyans," lead study author Plamen Andreev, a paleontologist at Qujing Normal University in China, said in the statement. It shows a "greater than currently understood plasticity" of how early mineralized skeletons developed and points to the evolutionary origins of modern skeletons, including those in humans, he added. Redefining fish evolution F. renovata is just one of several fossils that the researchers uncovered at the Rongxi Formation site. In a separate study, also published Sept. 28 in the journal Nature(opens in new tab), the researchers revealed another new species of extinct jawed fish, Qianodus duplicis. This species also dates to around 439 million years ago; however, it was described only from fossilized teeth and scales, which means researchers are more uncertain about exactly which group it may have belonged to. The same team also described three more extinct fish species from fossils unearthed at the site, reporting them in additional papers published on the same day. Xiushanosteus mirabilis was an armored fish in a group known as placoderms; Shenacanthus vermiforis might have been a placoderm but also has similarities with some jawless fish; and Tujiaaspis vividus belongs to a jawless group of fish called galeaspids, which are known for having helmet-like shields on their heads, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences(opens in new tab). None of these specimens was quite as old as F. renovata or Q. duplicis, but X. mirabilis and S. vermiforis are still older than any other known species of early jawed fish. Together, these newly described species completely change what scientists know about the evolution of jawed fishes. Past discoveries had suggested that the emergence and diversification of jawed fishes didn't really start until around 420 million years ago, according to the study. But the new fossils show that a variety of jawed fish were already swimming Earth's seas around 20 million years before that. Related: Sharks are older than the dinosaurs. What's the secret to their success? "Until this point, we've picked up hints from fossil scales that the evolution of jawed fish occurred much earlier in the fossil record, but have not uncovered anything definite," study co-author Ivan Sansom, a vertebrate paleobiologist at the University of Birmingham in the U.K., said in a statement(opens in new tab). "These are the first creatures that we would recognize today as fish-like." RELATED STORIES —'Truly remarkable' fossils are rare evidence of ancient shark-on-shark attacks —This 'ancient' monster fish may live for 100 years —'Wonderfully-shaped feces' found inside ancient fish skull. What left the pretty poops? What's more, the researchers suspect that jawed fish actually originated even earlier. Based on the similarities between F. renovata and modern sharks, rays and bony fish, the team estimated that a hypothetical common ancestor — also a jawed fish — of chondrichthyans and osteichthyans could date back to around 455 million years ago. The women of acclaimed Flamenco band Las Migas — Marta Robles, Alicia Grillo Risco, Laura Pacios and Carolina Fernandez — have a lot to be proud of. Besides conquering national and international stages with their powerful performances, the trio have landed two Latin Grammy nominations, have won the Min Award, and also recently launched their new album Libres. But what stands out most about them is not just their achievements but the journey and passion that has led them to win such accolades. In this candid interview with indianexpress.com, Marta Robles, composer, music arranger and the producer of their new album, reflects on the art of Flamenco, their Grammy nominations, making a mark in today’s music industry, performing in India, and much more. Read the edited excerpts below: What is your favourite part about Flamenco as a music genre? It would be the energy, power and passion that comes with the sound and vibe of Flamenco. That’s the essence of it, and we always try to keep that essence in our songs. In what ways, do you think, has Flamenco evolved over the years? I think earlier it was more singing centric, then they started incorporating the guitar, and today it’s a very high quality, complex form of music. You have to be very trained to understand and play it, it’s very difficult. But a lot of new ideas are coming in, like the artist Rosalía comes from the Flamenco scene but she does something a bit different today — and we’re so happy to see so many modern things like that happening because Flamenco will always be alive if people continue to reinvent it in new things. What challenges did you face while creating a space for yourself in the mainstream music scene? I try to do things that nobody else is doing — it’s always been important for me to be original. I started to play Flamenco because I came from the classical music world, and I wanted to do something different. So after investigating Flamenco, I thought that if we create a female band — that’s going to be totally new because when we started Las Migas there were no female bands in the Flamenco scene at all. And because we were always original, that gave us a lot of space already, since we were not doing the same thing as others. Social media has helped us a lot too, to spread our music. We have people writing to us from around the world, those who play our songs and want to know things about us. Just the other day we found out that we were nominated for the Latin Grammys 2022 in America for our album ‘LIBRES’. So all of this is happening because of social media and the way the world is today, since we are able to easily share our art with so many people. Did the pandemic affect the band in any way? It was very hard in the beginning because we had to cancel so many gigs. At first we were totally lost, but then it was also good because we had time to compose songs and record this album. We had been so busy otherwise — so the lockdown, especially for me, was a positive experience because I felt like now I can breathe a little bit at home and think about what the next step is. Do you believe Latin representation in the music industry is getting better with social media and increased exposure? I’m not sure, because I feel like to an extent it’s still the same — only the very well known artists get attention. But, when you’re in a lower level of being famous, you still have your space. We have our own audience, and it’s enough. What was it like finding out you were nominated for the Latin Grammys this year? We were nominated in the past, for the best album of Flamenco but this time we are nominated again — and we got this news right after the concert in Delhi while we were having dinner. When we were told we are nominated again for the best Flamenco album in 2022, it felt very, very, very exciting and nice. How do you like India as a venue to share your art and love for Flamenco? India is a country we have been interested in since a long time, because we love your music, art, dancing, colours, the spicy food, and style of life. There are so many things we wanted to learn about, especially because life here is so different than in Europe. We’ve only been in India for a short time but we’ve seen how nice and kind the people are. So it’s been an amazing experience — one that feels too short. SURSA

The British government is reversing plans to scrap the highest rate of income tax, announcing the embarrassing retreat after a rebellion among its own lawmakers and a week of financial and economic turmoil. In a statement on Monday, finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng said the tax cut for the highest earners “had become a distraction” from the government’s wider package of measures to tackle the energy crisis and to reduce taxes more broadly, in its efforts to end years of economic torpor. “We get it, and we have listened,” he said. The announcement marks a major and abrupt climb-down for new Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose government has been roiled by the reaction to its proposal for sweeping tax cuts, which included slashing the top rate of income tax to 40% from 45%. The government’s retreat came just 24 hours after Truss admitted mistakes in preparing the ground for Kwarteng’s “mini budget” on September 23 but said she was sticking with the measures. “I stand by the package we announced and I stand by the fact we announced it quickly,” she told the BBC on Sunday. LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - SEPTEMBER 30: Royal Mail postal workers join a Communication Workers Union (CWU) strike, outside a post office in London, United Kingdom, on September 30, 2022. Royal Mail workers have walked out for a 48-hour strike from today as a dispute over pay escalates. (Photo by Rasid Necati Aslim/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images) The UK economy still hasn't recovered from the pandemic. Now it's on the ropes again The proposed cuts of £45 billion ($50.5 billion) would have been the biggest in 50 years. Truss and Kwarteng said they were vital to shake the United Kingdom out of years of sluggish economic performance. But the cuts sent the pound plunging to historic lows against the US dollar, and sparked chaos in the market for UK debt because they will require a large increase in government borrowing. Mortgage rates soared, and some pension funds struggled to remain solvent. A degree of order was only restored by an emergency intervention last Wednesday by the Bank of England, which said it would buy UK government bonds worth £65 billion ($73 billion). The government’s decision to hand top earners a big tax cut while millions are struggling to pay their energy and food bills was the most politically controversial element of the plan. In a rare rebuke, the International Monetary Fund slammed the government’s package, saying it would raise inequality and increase inflationary pressure in the UK economy. Senior former ministerial colleagues of Truss and Kwarteng, including Michael Gove and Grant Shapps, lined up on Sunday to criticize the planned giveaway for the rich, and there were signs of a broader rebellion within the prime minister’s Conservative Party that could have ended in the measure being blocked in parliament. News that the abolition of the top rate of income tax was being reversed briefly sent the pound ticking higher in early trading on Monday. But the about-face will likely only reduce the overall size of the tax-cutting package by £2 billion, leaving the government yet to reassure markets that it has a solid plan to fund the rest. ‘Symbolic’ move “This move is rather symbolic, being less about the amount of money it will save (low billions) and more about the poor signal it had delivered of ideological (unfunded) tax cuts,” wrote Chris Turner, global head of UK markets at ING. The scale of the challenge was underscored late Friday when ratings agency S&P reduced its outlook for the credit rating on UK sovereign debt to “negative” from “stable.” “The negative outlook primarily reflects what we view as rising risks to the UK’s fiscal position over the next two years,” S&P said in a statement. It will publish its next rating on UK debt on October 21. Like many advanced economies, the United Kingdom is likely heading into a recession caused in large part by the energy price shock triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the sharp rise in interest rates designed to tame the soaring inflation that has ensued. But the botched “mini-budget” fanned the flames, ratcheting up expectations for UK interest rates. That in turn prompted UK mortgage lenders to drive up the rate they’re charging for new loans and for refinancing existing borrowing, sparking talk of a house-price crash next year. Crisis management by the Bank of England has bought the government some time to explain its economic strategy more clearly to investors. But the central bank’s emergency bond-buying program is due to end on October 14, and the government — for now at least — is sticking to its timetable for a full budget announcement only on November 23. More U-turns or spending cuts? Kwarteng’s efforts to restore the UK government’s credibility with markets will continue later Monday when he speaks to the Conservative Party conference. He is expected to state the government’s “iron-clad commitment to fiscal discipline,” while reiterating the need to drive up the trend rate of UK economic growth to 2.5%, according to a copy of his speech shared with CNN. But the government is borrowing heavily to pay for enormous energy subsidies for households and businesses to help them through this winter. And it still faces huge questions over how it intends to pay for the bulk of the tax-cutting package that remains. Cuts to public spending may be next. “[Kwarteng] still has a lot of work to do if he is to display a credible commitment to fiscal sustainability,” said Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, on Monday. “Unless he also U-turns on some of his other, much larger tax announcements, he will have no option but to consider cuts to public spending: to social security, investment projects, or public services,” he added. — Duarte Mendonca, Mia Alberti, Kara Fox, Alex Hardie and Julia Horowitz contributed to this article. An elite Chinese hacking group with ties to operatives indicted by a US grand jury in 2020 has surged its activity this year, targeting sensitive data held by companies and government agencies in the US and dozens of other countries, according to an expert at consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers. The findings highlight the biggest cyber-espionage challenge facing the Biden administration: combating a Chinese hacking program that the FBI has called more prolific than that of all other governments in the world combined. The Justice Department has aggressively sought to expose the alleged data-stealing campaigns through indictments, and made the case that Chinese hackers have robbed American companies of intellectual property, causing huge losses. But China-based hackers have often developed new tools or otherwise altered their operations, according to analysts. One of the Chinese groups tracked by PwC has targeted dozens of US organizations in the last year, including government agencies and software or tech firms, said Kris McConkey, who leads PwC’s global cyber threat intelligence practice. The intruders often comb networks for data that could offer insights into foreign or trade policy, he said, but also dabble in cryptocurrency schemes for personal profit. He declined to detail what types of US government agencies, whether at the federal, state or local level, were targeted. Voters in Quincy, Massachusetts, cast their primary ballots at the Fore River Clubhouse on Tuesday, September 6. First on CNN: Election workers to be trained to deal with violence at polls as midterms approach “They are, by far, the most active and globally impactful [hacking group] that we track at the minute,” McConkey, who closely follows China-based hackers, told CNN. He believes the attackers have been successful in breaching at least some organizations because they operate on a vast scale, targeting organizations in at least 35 countries this year alone. McConkey traced part of the activity to an ostensibly legitimate cybersecurity company based in the Chinese city of Chengdu, but he stopped short of publicly connecting the hacking to the Chinese government. US officials have for years accused China of using front companies to conduct hacking that feeds the government’s sprawling intelligence collection efforts. China has repeatedly denied allegations of hacking and Beijing has in recent months stepped up its own accusations that Washington has conducted cyber operations against Chinese assets. Cybersecurity issues have been a repeated source of friction between the world’s two biggest economies; President Joe Biden raised the subject on a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping last year. McConkey was one of multiple private cyber specialists who exposed the operations, and sometimes the alleged locations, of hackers from China, Iran and elsewhere at a recent conference called LABScon, hosted by US security firm SentinelOne, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Adam Kozy, who tracked Chinese hackers at the FBI from 2011 to 2013, showed the audience a photo of a People’s Liberation Army building in the city of Fuzhou that allegedly houses officers who conduct information operations against Chinese adversaries. That unit has targeted Taiwan, Kozy said, and “is the main area for China’s disinformation operations.” In their investigations of foreign hackers, the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors have drawn on those types of revelations from private researchers. Xi Jinping and other top Chinese leaders visit an exhibition themed "Forging Ahead in the New Era" at the Beijing Exhibition Hall on Tuesday. China's Xi reemerges after trip abroad quashing unfounded 'coup' rumors At least one FBI agent and officials from the National Security Agency and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency attended the conference, a reminder of how reliant government officials are on data held by tech firms to pursue spies and cybercriminals. Sometimes that work happens not in a classified facility but in the halls of a luxury hotel. NSA Morgan Adamski, a senior NSA official, told conference attendees that the coronavirus pandemic changed how her agency worked with private firms to guard sensitive data targeted by hackers. “The pandemic actually helped because it no longer revolved around big government meetings in a room, in a SCIF [Sensitive Compartmentalized Information Facility], where you couldn’t use any of the information,” said Adamski, who heads the NSA’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, which works with defense contractors to blunt the impact of foreign hacking. After US defense contractors began working from home during the pandemic, she said, Chinese government hackers exploited the virtual private networking (VPN) software the contractors were using. One hacked contractor, which she didn’t name, shared data with federal agencies so they could build a clearer picture of what was going on. Asked by CNN whether the NSA and other federal agencies responding to the hacks were able to evict the Chinese hackers, Adamski said it’s an iterative process. “When you talk about nation-state actors, you kick them out, but they’re going to come back,” Adamski said, “especially if you’re a defense industrial base company that is producing critical military intelligence for the Department of Defense.” SURSA

A bristly armored "worm" that scuttled across ocean reefs 518 million years ago is the ancestor to three aquatic animal groups that today live very different lifestyles, and it offers new clues about the explosion of diverse species at the time, a new study finds. An international team of researchers recently discovered the fossil of a species that gave rise to brachiopods, bryozoans and phoronids; these three groups of filter-feeding marine creatures all fix themselves to the seafloor, but each group has highly specialized feeding structures and they look very different from one another. The fossil species, named Wufengella bengtsoni, is a member of an older, shelled group of organisms called tommotiids, scientists reported in a new study. The find adds a new piece to the puzzle of how animals evolved during the Cambrian explosion, a time during the Cambrian period (541 million to 485.4 million years ago) when early life diversified rapidly on Earth, introducing and establishing a variety of different body plans that we still see in living animals today. Brachiopods are shelled, bivalved creatures; bryozoans are soft-bodied with crowns of tentacles, and phoronids are encased in protective tubes made of chitin, a material that reinforces organic structures such as exoskeletons, beaks and shells. Prior to the discovery of W. bengtsoni, taxonomists had speculated that the ancestor of all these animal groups could have been a segmented worm-like tommotiid, based on similarities in the groups' embryonic development in living animals. But while researchers had some idea of what this hypothetical ancestor might look like, they weren't sure if they'd ever find it. "One of the things that we often mentioned when we were sitting in the pub and fantasizing about what we could hope to potentially find one day was this elusive tommotiid," co-author Jakob Vinther, an associate professor of macroevolution at the University of Bristol in England, told Live Science. It's a rare find because animals such as this are typically not preserved well enough for paleontologists to study them in detail. "They were scuttling around on reefs in the shallow tropical waters that existed back then," Vinther said. In these ancient reef systems, dead animals usually were washed around until their bodies disintegrated, and their soft tissues often decayed in the reefs' oxygen-rich waters before fossilization could happen. "This particular animal, lucky for us, got washed down into deep water where it got buried in mud where it was preserved," Vinther said. While the researchers predicted W. bengtsoni's general body plan, some features in the fossil were a big surprise. It had flaps on its body that could have been used for suction purposes, to fix the animal to the reef when there were waves, Vinther speculated The species also had long bristles on its sides that may have been used for sensing prey or as protection against predators. The study authors aren't sure what the animal ate, but its body wasn't adapted for filtering water or staying still, so they know it wasn't a filter feeder that attached to the seafloor like its descendants. The researchers are confident that it is the ancestor of brachiopods, bryozoans and phoronids because it shared a similar skeleton with those groups. As life evolved in the Cambrian explosion, animals filled different ecological niches and adopted different body plans. "Sometimes ancestors may look altogether very, very different from their closest living relatives," Vinther said. Martin Smith, an associate professor of paleontology at Durham University in England who was not involved in the study, described the new research as an "impeccably executed" example of science. "It's a fantastic study," Smith said. "We're really seeing how these groups fit together, and how they evolved from a single common ancestor. It's taking us up a rung in the evolutionary tree," Smith added. "It's the next frontier, we're going that little bit deeper in deep time and we're really starting to see the origin of the Cambrian explosion when all the complex body plans appear." The study was published online Sept. 27 in the journal Current Biology. SURSA

The development comes despite its announcement to retain new prices even after the rupee strengthened against the US Dollar (USD).The new prices will be as follows: Model Variant Old Price (Rs.) Discounted Price (Rs.) Decrease (Rs.) Sportage Alpha 6,250,000 5,999,000 251,000 FWD 6,,750,000 6,649,000 101,000 AWD 7,250,000 7,149,000 101,000 It is worth noting that the KLMC has not disclosed any expiry date for its limited-time offer. Besides, it often announces price reductions on its models, such as the one on the Sorento earlier this year and another on the Sportage in 2019.Previously, Lucky Motor Corporation Limited (LMCL) reopened the bookings for Kia vehicles after deciding to maintain inflated prices despite rupee appreciating in value and the government’s decision to ease import restrictions. In this regard, a dealership representative informed ProPakistani that the company is taking bookings for all models with a one-month minimum delivery time. SURSA
