The ongoing supply chain and logistics issues have forced Honda to reduce automobile production by up to 40%. The reduction means that it will face difficulties in increasing production volumes in the second half of FY2023 to make up for the shortfall. Next month, two lines at Honda’s Suzuka plant in western Japan will reduce production by approximately 40%, while its Saitama assembly plant, north of Tokyo, will reduce production by almost 30%.Honda also stated that it will observe production cuts up to 40% in Saitama and up to 20% in Suzuka for the remainder of September. It cited COVID-19 outbreaks and semiconductor shortages as the cause of parts and logistics delays. The production slump will particularly impact Honda Vezel, Stepwgn, and Civic. Production Cuts in Pakistan The Pakistani car industry is also going through a rough patch due to crippling inflation and import sanctions. Companies have observed massive production cuts, which will cause sales to dwindle further in the coming months. According to details, the production figures are as follows: Carmakers Production in July Production in August Percentage Change Toyota Indus 3,582 3,089 -14% Honda Atlas 2,506 2,020 -19% Pak Suzuki 9,881 5,757 -42% Market reports suggest that all car companies are observing production cuts due to import restrictions and non-approval of letters of credit (LC). Reports suggest that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is stopping the LCs intentionally to curb the further deterioration of foreign exchange reserves. Be it Ayurveda or modern science, experts constantly stress the need for a good night’s sleep for the healthy functioning of our mind and body. This is because lack of sleep can significantly impact your well-being and put you at risk of serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and mental health issues, among others. Apart from ensuring that you are sleeping an adequate number of hours, you must also pay special attention to the direction you are sleeping in, says Ayurveda. Highlighting the importance Ayurveda places on sleep, Dr Arun Gopinath, Senior Medical Officer, Kerala Ayurveda said, “Farmers often leave their fields fallow, allowing the soil to regenerate and recoup its lost fertility. Sleep works in a similar manner – it is the period when we renew and revive our senses for a fresh start and a productive day. Sleep or nidra is highly vital in Ayurveda – so much that it is included in the three pillars of life or the Traya Upasthambhas along with food or Ahara and sexual conduct or Brahmacharya.” He added that Acharya Charaka – one of the principal contributors to the ancient system of Ayurveda – hailed sleep as ‘Bhutadhathri‘, “indicating that restful sleep nourishes our body like a mother, or dhatri nourishes her child.”However, despite its many benefits, many people struggle to get restful sleep. While we often blame lifestyle factors for it, little attention is paid to the direction we sleep in, which could have a significant impact on the quality of our sleep, and also our health. “Interestingly, Anandakanda, an Ayurvedic text, mentions the directions in which one should sleep to enjoy a deep, restful sleep,” Dr Gopinath said. The best direction to sleep According to Ayurvedic expert Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya, one should sleep with their head facing south as it is considered the direction of deep, heavy sleep. “As South is negatively charged and your head is positively charged, there is a harmonious attraction between your head and the direction. Instead of energy being pulled out if you sleep with your head to the north, energy is drawn into your body promoting health, happiness and prosperity. That means you should sleep like a log with your head facing south,” she explained. Agreeing, Dr Gopinath said: “In mythology, it is believed to be the direction of Lord Yama, meaning you will enjoy a night of uninterrupted sleep and longevity or deerghayu in this direction.” A study, published in the National Library of Medicine, stated that hat those who were instructed to sleep with their head in the south direction for 12 weeks had the lowest systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and serum cortisol.Worst direction to sleep Is there a worst direction to sleep, too? Just like the south is considered to be the best direction to sleep in, Ayurvedic experts suggested avoiding facing north while sleeping. This is because “sleeping towards the north makes the positive pole of earth coincide with the positive pole of our body, which repels each other. You will, thus, have nightmares and disturbed sleep,” Dr Gopinath explained. Dr Dixa added that, in this direction, you won’t get a restful night’s sleep and are likely to wake up exhausted from the unconscious war that’s been going on all night long. “This magnetism is understood, Ayurvedically, to affect blood circulation, stress and cause disturbance of the mind,” she said. What about east and west? Now that it is established that sleeping with your head towards south and north are the best and worst positions, respectively, let’s delve deeper into the remaining two directions and their effect on your sleep and, in turn, health.East: This sleeping direction is considered beneficial for students as it is believed to be a memory enhancer. “As the sun rises in the east, this direction signifies rejuvenation and positive energy characterised by intellect and creativity,” Dr Gopinath said. Dr Dixa added that this direction helps improve concentration, and promotes meditative sleep and very good health. West: Sleeping west, on other hand, is linked to an unsettled night’s sleep. “Vastu Shastra says that this is the direction of striving which could give you unsettling dreams and not a very restful night’s sleep,” she explained. Also in the series |Why sleeping on your stomach can be harmful for health Additionally, sleeping with your head towards the west can lead to emotional distress, Dr Gopinath mentioned. “It increases Rajas or restlessness, and you may suffer from nightmares. But it also makes a person success-driven, so it is for those who want to succeed in life and are not bothered about their sleep quality,” he added. (Next in the series: Can lack of sleep affect heart health, and vice versa?) SURSA

(CNN)Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni has claimed victory in a general election that seems set to install her as Italy's first female prime minister, leading the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini. Addressing the media and supporters in the early hours of Monday morning, Meloni said it was "a night of pride for many and a night of redemption." "It's a victory I want to dedicate to everyone who is no longer with us and wanted this night," she said. "Starting tomorrow we have to show our value ... Italians chose us, and we will not betray it, as we never have," she said. Preliminary results put an alliance of far-right parties, led by Meloni's ultraconservative Brothers of Italy party, on track to win at least 44% of the vote, according to the Italian Interior Ministry. With 63% of votes counted, the Brothers of Italy party had won at least 26%, with coalition partners the League, led by Matteo Salvini, taking around 9% and Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia scoring over 8%. Final results are expected later Monday, but it's expected to take weeks for a new government to be formed. Meloni entered Italy's crowded political scene in 2006 and co-founded the Brothers of Italy in 2012, a party whose agenda is rooted in Euroskepticism and anti-immigration policies. Leader of Brothers of Italy Giorgia Meloni casts her vote in Rome on Sunday, September 25, 2022. Leader of Brothers of Italy Giorgia Meloni casts her vote in Rome on Sunday, September 25, 2022. In the last election in 2018, the party won just 4.5% of the vote, but its po[CENSORED]rity has soared in recent years, underscoring Italy's longstanding rejection of mainstream politics, seen most recently with the country's support of anti-establishment parties such as the Five Star Movement and Salvini's League. Celebrating the early results on Sunday evening, Salvini said on Twitter, "Center-right in clear advantage both in the House and in the Senate! It will be a long night, but already now I want to say THANK YOU." Meloni differs from coalition partner leaders on the issue of Ukraine. Whereas Berlusconi and Salvini have both said they would like to review sanctions against Russia because of their impact on the Italian economy, Meloni has been steadfast in her support for defending Ukraine. A 45-year-old mother from Rome, Meloni is deeply conservative, openly anti-LBGT, and has threatened to place same sex unions, which were legalized in Italy in 2016, under review. She has also called abortion a "tragedy," raising fears for the future of women's rights in the country. Ultra-conservative likely to become Italy's first female prime minister 02:57 'A sad evening' The preliminary results showed the center-left coalition, led by the left-wing Democratic Party and centrist party +Europe had won around 22% of the vote, while former prime minister Giuseppe Conte's bid to revive the Five Star Movement appeared to have been unsuccessful, with around 15%. In a Facebook post, Conte promised to lead an "uncompromising opposition." "We will be the outpost for the progressive agenda against inequalities, to protect families and businesses in difficulty, to defend the rights and values of our Constitution." Debora Serracchiani of the Democratic Party also conceded defeat early Monday morning, calling the results a "sad evening for the country." How Giorgia Meloni and her far-right party became a driving force in Italian politics How Giorgia Meloni and her far-right party became a driving force in Italian politics "Undoubtedly we cannot, in light of the data seen so far, not attribute the victory to the right dragged by Giorgia Meloni. It is a sad evening for the country," Serracchiani told reporters. Sunday's snap national election was triggered by party infighting that saw the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi's government in July. Voters headed to the polls amid a number of new regulations, with voting hours also contained to one day rather than two. Other changes included a younger voting age for the Senate and a reduction in the number of seats to elect -- down from 685 seats to 400 in the Senate and from 315 to 200 in the lower House of Parliament. That parliament is scheduled to meet on October 13, at which point the head of state will call on party leaders to decide on the shape of the new government. The buildup to the election was dominated by hot-button issues including Italy's cost-of-living crisis, a 209 billion euro ($200 million) package from the European Covid recovery fund and the country's support for Ukraine. The incoming prime minister -- the sixth in just eight years -- will be tasked in tackling a number of challenges, with soaring energy costs and economic uncertainty among the country's most pressing. And while Meloni is slated to make history as Italy's first female prime minister, her politics do not mean that she is necessarily interested in advancing women's rights. Emiliana De Blasio, adviser for diversity and inclusion at LUISS University in Rome, told CNN Meloni is "not raising up at all questions on women's rights and empowerment in general." The conditions are perfect for a populist resurgence in Europe The conditions are perfect for a populist resurgence in Europe Sunday's results come as other far-right parties in other European countries have marked recent gains, including the rise in Sweden's anti-immigration party, Sweden Democrats -- a party with neo-Nazi roots -- who are expected to play a major role in the new government after winning the second largest share of seats at a general election earlier this month. And in France, while far-right ideologue Marine Le Pen lost the French presidential election to Emmanuel Macron in April, her share of the po[CENSORED]r vote shifted France's political center dramatically to the right. In a social media post early Monday, Meloni dedicated her projected win to "all the militants, managers, supporters and every single person who -- in these years -- has contributed to the realization of our dream, offering soul and heart spontaneously and selflessly." She added: "We won't betray your trust. We are ready to lift Italy up." SURSA

South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace speaks in Mount Pleasant after winning her primary election on June 14, 2022. (CNN)GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said Sunday she believes there is "pressure" for House Republicans to move to impeach President Joe Biden if they gain control of the chamber after the midterm elections. "I believe there's pressure on the Republicans to put that forward and have that vote," Mace told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press" when asked if she foresees impeachment proceedings should her party win control of the House. "I think that's what some folks are considering." But the freshman lawmaker added: "If that happens, I do believe it's divisive." Mace did not mention the source of the alleged pressure and was not asked to elaborate on who is considering the move. Asked Sunday how she would vote if an impeachment vote came to the floor, Mace said: "I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process was stripped away, for anyone. I typically vote constitutionally, regardless of who is in power." CNN reported earlier this year that hard-line elements of the House Republican Conference were agitating to launch impeachment proceedings against Biden if the GOP takes power after the midterms -- a move GOP leaders have so far declined to embrace.House Republicans are also plotting revenge on the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection, CNN has reported. Former President Donald Trump has been leaning heavily on his Capitol Hill allies to defend him against a slew of damaging revelations about his role in the deadly attack on the US Capitol. And as Republicans search for ways to undermine those findings, their party has started to lay the groundwork to investigate the January 6 panel itself. Some of Trump's fiercest acolytes have also begun publicly pushing for hearings and probes into his baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election. While House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy has vowed to conduct aggressive oversight and investigations in a GOP-led House, it's unclear just how far he would be willing to go when it comes to January 6 and the 2020 presidential election. Mace, who flipped a Charleston-area seat in 2020, voted to certify Biden's presidential election victory, earning Trump's wrath. Faced with charges of insufficient loyalty to the former President, she drew a Trump-backed primary challenger but ended up prevailing by 8 points in her June primary. Mace told NBC she was "very much hopeful" to see "a deep bench of Republicans and Democrats who will be running for president" in 2024. But she left the door open to possibly supporting Trump again if he were the 2024 GOP nominee for president. "I'm going to support whomever Republicans nominate in '24," she said. CNN's Melanie Zanona, Manu Raju, Gabby Orr and Zachary Cohen contributed to this report. SURSA

Experts are unsure exactly which species the creepy creature belongs to.A deep-sea angler recently reeled in this mysterious shark with bulging eyes, rough skin and an unnervingly human-like smile. (Image credit: Trapman Bermagui) (opens in new tab) A bizarre deep-sea shark with bulging eyes and an unnerving, human-like smile was recently dragged up from the depths off the coast of Australia. Shark experts are uncertain exactly which species the creepy-looking creature might belong to, adding to the mystery surrounding the unusual specimen. A deep-sea angler, who goes by the online name Trapman Bermagui, reeled in the mysterious shark from a depth of around 2,130 feet (650 meters) off the coast of New South Wales in Australia. The fisher later shared a snap of the deep-sea specimen on Sept. 12 on Facebook(opens in new tab). The image shows off the dead shark's rough sandpaper-like skin, large pointed snout, large bulging eyes and exposed pearly whites. The shark’s unusual features quickly caught the attention of other Facebook users, who were either amazed or terrified by the creature. One commenter wrote that the specimen was "the stuff of nightmares," while another wrote that the creature's "evil smile" gave them "major creeps." Other people joked about the animal's appearance, speculating that the shark was wearing "false teeth" or that it was smiling after finally having its braces removed. Commenters also speculated about which species the shark belonged to. The most common guess was that the specimen was a cookiecutter shark (Isistius brasiliensis), which is named for the distinctive bite marks it leaves on larger animals. Other guesses included a goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) or a species of lantern shark (Etmopteridae). CLOSE However, Trapman Bermagui disagreed with the online commenters. "Totally not a cookiecutter," the fisher told Newsweek(opens in new tab). "It's a rough skin shark, also known as a species of endeavor dogfish." Endeavor dogfish (Centrophorus moluccensis) are a type of gulper shark, a group of deep-sea sharks found throughout the world, according to the Shark Research Institute(opens in new tab). But some shark experts were unconvinced by the fisher's identification. "Looks to me like a deepwater kitefin shark (Dalatias licha), which are known in the waters off Australia," Christopher Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, told Newsweek. Although, it is hard to tell for sure without being able to see the entire specimen, he added. Dean Grubbs, a marine biologist and shark expert at Florida State University, offered up a different conclusion. Grubbs suspected that the dead shark was a roughskin dogfish (Centroscymnus owstonii), a type of sleeper shark from the same family as Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus), according to Newsweek. It is also possible that the shark could belong to a never-before-seen species, Lowe said. "We discover new species of deepwater shark all the time and many look very similar to each other." However, other experts believe that Trapman Bermagui may have been spot on after all. "It's a gulper shark," Brit Finucci, a fisheries scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand who specializes in deep-sea sharks, told Live Science in an email. However, it is unclear exactly which species in this group it belongs to, she added. Originally published on Live Science. SURSA

(CNN)Tudor Dixon, the Republican challenging Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, made light of the 2020 kidnapping plot against Whitmer on Friday, telling a crowd that the Democratic governor "sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom." During a pro-Dixon super PAC event in Troy, Michigan, Dixon criticized Whitmer for what the Republican characterized as burdensome business regulations. She said Whitmer is "not a businesswoman" and is a "politician with a law degree," and then invoked the kidnapping plot. A federal jury in August convicted two men of conspiring to kidnap Whitmer at her vacation home in 2020. They were also convicted of one count of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction after prosecutors detailed their plans to blow up a bridge to prevent police from responding to the kidnapping of the governor. The men now face a maximum sentence of life in prison. "The sad thing is that Gretchen will tie your hands, put a gun to your head, and ask if you're ready to talk," Dixon said at the event, which was hosted with Kellyanne Conway, a former Trump White House aide. "For someone so worried about being kidnapped, Gretchen Whitmer sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom." Whitmer's campaign and Democratic groups condemned Dixon's remarks Friday. "Threats of violence and dangerous rhetoric undermine our democracy and discourage good people on both sides of the aisle at every level from entering public service," Whitmer campaign spokesperson Maeve Coyle said in a statement. "Governor Whitmer has faced serious threats to her safety and her life, and she is grateful to the law enforcement and prosecutors for their tireless work," Coyle said. "Threats of violence -- whether to Governor Whitmer or to candidates and elected officials on the other side of the aisle -- are no laughing matter, and the fact that Tudor Dixon thinks it's a joke shows that she is absolutely unfit to serve in public office." After her comment drew backlash, Dixon joked again about the kidnapping plot at a second event Friday, this time with Donald Trump Jr., the son of the former President. She told a crowd that, at a stop with President Joe Biden at the Detroit Auto Show last week, Whitmer looked like she'd "rather be kidnapped by the FBI." "Yeah, the media is like, 'Oh my gosh, she did it again,'" Dixon said, anticipating the reaction to her second reference of the day to the 2020 kidnapping plot. As she told the crowd that her earlier remarks about the plot to kidnap Whitmer had been characterized as a joke, Dixon said: "I'm like, 'No, that wasn't a joke.' If you were afraid of that, you should know what it is to have your life ripped away from you." Dixon, pressed later Friday about her remarks making light of the plot, then defended them to CNN. "I think when you're being attacked every day, you have to have a little levity in things," she said. "We can still have fun." The 2020 plot was foiled in part because FBI agents had infiltrated the group as it planned the effort to kidnap Whitmer. "Show of hands -- how many feds in the crowd? I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some sort of, you know, federal kidnapping plot," Trump Jr. said. "You know, Gretchen Whitmer knew about it months in advance. But you know what, if we can get good PR from it, we can pretend like it's real," Trump Jr. said. "You know, the FBI can try to entrap a couple of meth heads somewhere and run with that narrative now." Dixon, a conservative commentator and businesswoman from Norton Shores, won Michigan's Republican primary to take on Whitmer in August. She was endorsed in that primary by Trump and is supported by the family of former Trump education secretary Betsy DeVos -- GOP mega-donors in Michigan. The Republican Governors Association, the group tasked with raising money and providing infrastructure for GOP gubernatorial campaigns, declined to comment on Dixon's remarks. "Tudor Dixon's comments are dangerous, an insult to law enforcement who keep us safe, and utterly disqualifying for the role of Michigan governor. Dixon's backers in the DeVos family and at the RGA should condemn her dangerous extremism," Democratic Governors Association spokesman Sam Newton said in a statement. Polls have consistently shown Whitmer with a lead in the race. That Whitmer lead is in part driven by a renewed focus on abortion in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to end federal abortion rights. Whitmer has vowed to protect abortion rights in a state where Republicans control the legislature, and Democrats have successfully pushed for a referendum on this year's ballot that would enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat who is up for reelection in November, tweeted that Dixon's "statement is repugnant." Whitmer, Nessel wrote on Twitter, "is the victim of a very serious plot to kidnap and assassinate her. Anyone who would make light of such an effort is not fit to hold public office at any level." This story has been updated with additional developments Friday. SURSA

(CNN)Iranian authorities say they will restrict internet access in the country until calm is restored to the streets, as protests over the death of a young woman in the custody of the morality police rock the Islamic Republic. Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets in protest since the death last week of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was apprehended in Tehran and taken to a "re-education center," apparently for not wearing her hijab properly. Since Friday, demonstrations have taken place in at least 40 cities nationwide, including the capital Tehran, with protesters demanding an end to violence and discrimination against women as well as an end to compulsory wearing of the hijab. At least 1,200 have been arrested in connection to the protests, Iranian state-backed news agency Tasmin reported Saturday, citing a security official. Dozens of protesters have reportedly been killed in the resulting clashes with security forces. CNN cannot independently verify the death toll -- a precise figure is impossible for anyone outside the Iranian government to confirm -- and different estimates have been given by opposition groups, international rights organizations and local journalists. Amnesty International said Friday that at least 30 people, including four children, had died; according to state media the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, 35 people have died. The demonstrations have also seen journalists targeted by authorities, with at least 17 arrested, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a non-profit that monitors press freedom. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has asked all people to identify protesters, the country's semi-official news agency Fars News said. The IRCG is the elite wing of the Iranian military that was established in the aftermath of the country's revolution in 1979. Decades of repression Authorities hope that by restricting the internet they can control the protests -- the latest in a wave that has swept Iran in recent years. They started with the Green movement in 2009 over contested election results and more recently the 2019 protests sparked by a rise in fuel prices. Hundreds were believed to have been killed in the violent crackdown three years ago and thousands injured, according to estimates released by the UN and rights groups. But this year's protests are different -- in their scope, scale and unprecedented feminist nature. There is also mobilization across the socio-economic divide. A young generation of Iranians are rising up on the streets against decades of repression -- arguably bolder than ever. The demonstrations have spread to dozens of Iranian cities, from the Kurdish region in the northwest, to the capital Tehran and even more traditionally conservative cities like Mashhad. While they were ignited by the death of Amini -- the initial calls for accountability have turned into demands for more rights and freedoms, especially for women who for decades since the 1979 Islamic Revolution have faced discrimination and severe restrictions on their rights. 'I'm frightened': Women open up about Iran's hijab law following police custody death 01:13 But calls for regime change are growing too. People across the country are chanting for "death to the dictator," in a reference to the Supreme Leader, tearing down portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Remarkable images emerged on Friday night from Khamenei's birthplace in the city of Mashhad, where protesters set fire to the statue of a man considered one of the symbols of the Islamic Revolution. Such scenes were unthinkable in the past. This is all happening at a time when Iran's hardline leadership is under growing pressure with talks to revive the stalled 2015 nuclear agreement and the state of the economy under US sanctions; ordinary Iranians are struggling to cope with soaring levels of inflation. While these protests are the biggest challenge for the government for years, analysts believe the government will likely move to contain them by resorting to the heavy-handed tactics it has used in the past. There are signs a brutal crackdown is coming, along with the internet restrictions on a level not seen since 2019. Other measures include the government mobilizing its supporters in mass rallies following Friday prayers; officials dismissing the demonstrators as rioters and foreign agents, and ominous warnings the army and powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps will be deployed to deal with the protests. Speaking with state broadcaster IRIB on Friday, Iran's Minister of Communications Ahmad Vahidi said, "Until the riots end, the internet will have limitations. To prevent riot organization through social media, we are obliged to create internet limitations." Vahidi's comments came after videos on social media showed scenes of public defiance, with women removing and burning their headscarves and demonstrators chanting such slogans as, "women, life, freedom." The move to further restrict the internet also followed a call by the United Nations for an independent investigation into Amini's death and for Iran's security forces to refrain from using "disproportionate force" on the protesters. Outrage over Amini's death comes from public skepticism over the account given by state officials, who claim she died after suffering a "heart attack" and fell into a coma. But Amini's family have said she had no pre-existing heart condition.Amini's death has now become a symbol of the violent oppression women have faced in Iran for decades, and her name has spread around the globe, with world leaders invoking her even at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City this week. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Thursday said UN experts strongly condemned the use of physical violence against women in Iran by state authorities. "Iranian authorities said (Amini) died of a heart attack, and claimed her death was from natural causes. However, some reports suggested that Amini's death was a result of alleged torture and ill-treatment," it said in a statement. "We call on the Iranian authorities to hold an independent, impartial, and prompt investigation into Ms Amini's death, make the findings of the investigation public and hold all perpetrators accountable," it added. Internet crackdown The internet monitoring agency Netblocks said Friday Iranians are facing a third wave of "nation-scale" loss of mobile internet connectivity as the protests continue. The watchdog group said earlier in the week that Iran was experiencing the most severe internet restrictions since 2019, with mobile networks largely shutdown and social networks Instagram and WhatsApp restricted in the country since protests began. To circumvent internet blocks, Iranians both inside the country and in the diaspora are turning to po[CENSORED]r Virtual Private Network (VPN) providers such as Tor Project and Hula VPN -- the top downloaded apps available in Iran via Google Play Store, a marketplace for Android smartphone users to download apps, according to monitoring service AppBrain. However, Netblocks has warned that the kind of internet disruption seen currently in the country "cannot generally be worked around with the use of circumvention software or VPNs." Similar internet restrictions took place in Iran in November 2019, taking Iranians almost entirely offline as authorities tried to curb the spread of nationwide protests over fuel prices. Violent crackdown doesn't slow protest against Iran's morality police 02:35 Oracle's Internet Intelligence called it at the time the "largest internet shutdown ever observed in Iran." Meanwhile, Internet activist hacker group Anonymous has also targeted the Iranian government online over the past week, announcing several breaches of government websites on Thursday. Using the hashtag #OpIran, short for Operation Iran, which started gaining traction on social media following the death of Amini, Anonymous also tweeted Thursday that the organization was successful in hacking more than 1,000 CCTV Iranian cameras -- a claim CNN has not been able to independently confirm. UN calls for investigation UN Secretary General António Guterres said Friday he was "concerned about reports of peaceful protests being met with excessive use of force leading to dozens of deaths and injuries." "We call on the security forces to refrain from using unnecessary or disproportionate force and appeal to all to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation," Dujarric said at the daily briefing on UNTV. The UN said it's closely following the protests in Iran and called on authorities to "respect the right to freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly and association." "We also call on the authorities to respect women's rights and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls and implement effective measures to protect them from other human rights violations, in accordance with international standards." Guterres reiterated a call from the Acting High Commissioner for Human Rights for a prompt investigation into the death of Amini by an "independent competent authority." Iran's Interior Minister denied Mahsa Amini was beaten up, citing investigations into the incident, the country's state news agency, IRNA, reported Saturday. "The results of observations, talking with those who were on the scene, receiving reports from relevant bodies and other investigations showed that late Ms. Amini was not beaten, Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi told (Iran's state broadcaster) IRIB," IRNA reported. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called Amini's family saying he had ordered the incident to be investigated carefully so that no rights would be violated, according to IRNA. He said during his trip to the UNGA in New York last week that early coroner's findings found no signs of beating. After returning to Iran follow his trip to the UNGA in New York, Raisi also called the family of a Basij member, a volunteer paramilitary group connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed during protests in Mashhad, according to his official website. In the statement released by his office, Raisi expressed his condolences to the family of Rasool Doust Mohammadi, the Basij member, and said there is a "need to distinguish between protest and disruption of public order and security," while also describing the protests "as rioting and evil." President Joe Biden presents Elton John with the National Humanities Medal after a concert on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, as first lady Jill Biden watches. Washington (CNN)President Joe Biden on Friday presented Sir Elton John with the National Humanities Medal, surprising the music icon following a performance on the South Lawn of the White House. "I'm never flabbergasted, but I'm flabbergasted," a visibly moved John said, thanking the President and saying that he will "treasure" the honor. The medal, according to the Friday presentation, was to honor John "for moving our souls with his powerful voice and one of the defining song books of all time. An enduring icon and advocate with absolute courage, who found purpose to challenge convention, shatter stigma and advance the simple truth -- that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect." Biden said that he and first lady Jill Biden had invited John to the White House to thank him and praised the singer for his music and advocacy in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Sir Elton John performs during an event on the South Lawn of the White House on September 23. "As Jill just mentioned, we're joined by so many people that ... he's set free to be themselves, to be treated with dignity and respect they deserve. Families and advocates in the fight against HIV/AIDS. A fight that he has led with sheer will, a fight for those lives lost and those lives we can save. Leaders standing up for equality of all people, no matter who you are, or who you love," the President said. John was met with standing ovations as he performed a number of hit songs, including "Your Song," "Rocket Man" and "Tiny Dancer," during the concert titled "A Night When Hope and History Rhyme," in collaboration with A&E Networks and The History Channel. Approximately 2,000 guests were invited to the event and attendees included high-profile guests and government officials such as civil rights advocate Ruby Bridges, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, as well as teachers, nurses, LGBTQ advocates and military families, who the White House dubbed "everyday history-makers." Speaking in between songs, John addressed former first lady Laura Bush, who was also in attendance, acknowledging former President George W. Bush's "astonishing" work on the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which he started while in office and is credited with changing the trajectory of the HIV/AIDS crisis around the world. "I want to say to the first lady, President Bush accelerated the whole thing with his PEPFAR bill. It was the most incredible thing," John said, asking Laura Bush to give her husband a hug on his behalf. The fight to end the HIV epidemic, John said, is one of the few truly bipartisan issues in the US, adding: "I just wish America could be more bipartisan on everything." The night had moments of levity, such as when John lightened the mood as he took the stage, joking, "I don't know what to say. What a dump," drawing laughs from attendees. And it also drew emotion, including when Biden could been seen wiping tears as John sang, "Crocodile Rock." The singer previewed the song by saying it meant a lot to the President, who used to sing it with his kids while driving them to school. The White House pool reported that later in life, the song helped Biden connect with his son Beau as he was dying of brain cancer and unable to communicate well. Biden, who noted his family "like so many Americans" loves John's music, ended the program with thanks. "On behalf of the American people, thank you -- and I sincerely mean this -- for moving the soul of our nation," he told John. SURSA

An artistic representation of the "alien goldfish" Typhloesus wellsi hunting prey. (Image credit: Drawing by Joschua Knüppe © Royal Ontario Museum.) (opens in new tab) Ancient creatures nicknamed "alien goldfish" had toothy, tongue-like structures in their guts that they fired out of their bodies to catch prey 330 million years ago, but they weren't so different from some modern-day mollusks in that regard, a new study finds. Toothed tongue-launcher Typhloesus wellsi was first described in 1973, and has been an evolutionary enigma in scientific circles for many decades. The freaky animal dates from the Carboniferous period (358.9 million to 298.9 million years ago). But fossils of the vaguely fish-like animals were so different from other Carboniferous animals that scientists joked they belonged to extraterrestrials. Now, thanks to some exceptionally well-preserved fossils in Montana, researchers have found that these so-called aliens have a feeding mechanism resembling that of mollusks — a large group of soft-bodied invertebrates that includes snails, clams and octopuses. Many mollusks have a similar inverted tongue-like structure called a radula, which carnivorous and herbivorous members of the group use to grab food. The researchers, therefore, suspected that the mysterious T. wellsi was an early mollusk. "We would like to think we've solved a small evolutionary conundrum," lead author Simon Conway Morris, an emeritus professor of paleobiology at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, told Live Science. Conway Morris dubbed T. wellsi the "alien goldfish" in a 2005 article published in the journal Astronomy & Geophysics(opens in new tab). He whimsically imagined the species arriving on Earth during the Carboniferous because a visiting intergalactic commodore grew tired of keeping them as pets and threw them into a lagoon, baffling human scientists who found their fossilized remains hundreds of millions of years later. "Nobody seriously believed that they were extraterrestrial goldfish, but they certainly looked extremely strange," Conway Morris said. Along with the toothy gut tongue, T. wellsi had a soft body that measured up to 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) long, with a prominent fin at the back to propel them forward. For the new study, researchers studied T. wellsi specimens acquired by the Royal Ontario Museum and saw that one of them had an exceptionally well-preserved set of teeth. The teeth weren't where a mouth would be on humans; rather, they were deep inside the body of the fossil and pointing backward. The toothy tongue-like structure of Typhloesus wellsi. (Image credit: Drawing by Joschua Knüppe © Royal Ontario Museum.) (opens in new tab) The scientists concluded that the front end of the gut must have shot out of the body, inverting the position of the teeth to grasp prey — in other words, turning the predator's foregut inside out. Conway Morris compared this to a plastic glove with a pressed-in finger that's filled with water or blown into until the finger pops out. Researchers know that T. wellsi was an active predator because the remains of tiny worm-like prey called conodonts are found inside them. The researchers proposed in the new study that T. wellsi was an early gastropod, which is the group of mollusks that includes modern snails and slugs, because many of these living species extend their foreguts to grasp prey. "It's the discovery of this radula-like structure, which we suggest is the really crucial piece of evidence," Conway Morris said. As scientists discover new fossil specimens and re-examine fossils in museum collections, they may tweak the positions of ancient species on the tree of life. This new study suggests T. wellsi was a mollusk, but its taxonomic status is still up for debate. Mark Purnell, a professor of palaeobiology at the University of Leicester in England, told the Guardian(opens in new tab) that the presence of a radula does not definitively declare the species to be a mollusk, because animal lineages can evolve radula-like features independently from one another. "It is still a very strange animal," Purnell told the Guardian. "[The researchers] have found some tantalising new information, but it is far from being a slam-dunk case in terms of definitely knowing what this weird thing is." Conway Morris accepts that the radula could have evolved independently from mollusks and that future research may amend the new paper's findings, but he embraces that aspect of doing research. "Welcome to science," Conway Morris said. "It's all work in progress." The study was published online Sept. 21 in the journal Biology Letters(opens in new tab). Originally published on Live Science. https://propakistani.pk/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/biometric-verification-vehicles-.jpg The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has ordered the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to take a policy decision to cooperate with the police and other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in conducting an operation against smuggled vehicles across the country. It issued these directives under the Own Motion Investigation (OMI) after it received new reports about numerous Non-Custom Paid (NCP) vehicles being used in the Malakand Division and surrounding areas of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).FTO also sought reports from the Secretary Revenue Division, Director General of Intelligence and Investigation (DG I&I), and Chief Collector of Customs KP. According to Chief Collector, around 121,193 NCP vehicles, registered until October 2018, are being used in KP but their numbers may vary, as more vehicles are smuggled to these areas. However, reports suggest that the estimated number of NCP vehicles in Malakand and other regions of the province is approximately 200,000 to 300,000. Moreover, the FTO noted that NCP vehicles were being moved across regions without the proper payment of duties or taxes, and the FBR units, who were in charge of enforcing customs laws, were obligated to confiscate them. Interestingly, only 204 of them were seized despite their number increasing twice in the last four years. The Collectorate of Enforcement in Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) and Peshawar recovered them. In addition, Director I&I recovered 57 vehicles from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022.Consequently, the FTO directed the FBR to collaborate with the Inspector Generals (IGs) of LEAs and Police to launch a countrywide crackdown against smuggled vehicles under Customs Act, 1969. Besides, it also ordered all chief collectors to tighten the border control to prevent smuggling and to timely auction off the confiscated ones in accordance with the law and the rules. SURSA

In a city that was born out of a confluence of migrant communities, the Pathare Kshatriyas have been an integral part of Mumbai over the centuries. Known as one of the earliest migrant communities to settle in Mumbai long before it became the premier city of India, the Pathare Kshatriyas contributed to its urbanscape, art and culture. Sandeep Dahisarkar, 30, has researched this community, highlighting their history and developments that ran parallel to Mumbai’s history. Dahisarkar, who is from this community himself, was interested to learn more about the Pathare Kshatriyas right from his junior college days and has come out with a book, The Pathare Kshatriyas of Bombay (published by Sahit Prakashan). In an interview, Dahisarkar sheds light on the Pathare Kshatriyas’ links to Mumbai.Edited excerpts: The Pathare Kshatriyas are best known in the context of Raja Bimba, who some say Bombay is named after. What’s the story of Bimba and how does he connect to the migration of the Pathare Kshatriyas? The discovery of the BARC inscription of Hambirrao in 2016 highlighted for the first time the name of this city as ‘Bimbasthana’, a region/place of Bimba. It sheds some light on the historicity of Raja Bimba and Hambirrao, whose names are also recorded in Bimbakhyana, a Marathi text compiled in mid-15th to late-16th Century CE. This text documents earliest known migration in the city, i.e. people migrated from Champaner with Bimbadeva, after conquering this region in 1138 CE. till the arrival of Portuguese in 1448 CE. Pratap Bimba was a Suryavanshi Kshatriya and his family goddess was Prabhavati or Prabhadevi. His son Bimbadeva brought many families here for their permanent settlement. There were a total of 66 families which migrated with Bimbadeva, out of which there were 25 Somavanshi (lunar race) and 12 Suryavanshi (solar race) Kshatriyas. At a later point, the Kshatriyas were divided into different castes as Pathare Kshatriyas of Mumbai, Pathare Prabhus of South Mumbai, and Suryavanshi Kshatriyas of Palghar/ Thane district. You have written about several notable personalities from the Pathare Kshatriya community who had a close connection with art, architecture and engineering in the city of Mumbai. What drew these individuals towards their art and the city? According to Bimbakhyana, Raja Bimba once ordered two families to learn carpentry to build ships and protect the kingdom, as it was located on the Western coast. In the colonial period, after learning carpentry, many people became contractors and started constructing buildings, bungalows, chawls etc. During this time, many turned their attention towards learning the new sister fields of architecture and engineering as a source of livelihood. A majority of the important sculptors from pre-Independence came from this community. The first prestigious Mayo Medal (1889) of Sir JJ School of Art was awarded to painter NG Mantri. Rao Bahadur GK Mhatre is regarded as the first Indian sculptor. As the capital of its Presidency, Bombay opened new avenues to many such people to explore their field of interest. The Pathare Kshatriyas built several temples across Mumbai and surrounding areas, including the famous one in Goregaon after which the “Ram Mandir” railway station is named. Can you tell us about the most fascinating aspects about these temples? A majority of these temples are built with sloping roofs. The Kashi Vishveshwar Temple in Matunga is the oldest known reconstructed temple in 1783 CE. The Mahimkar family’s Vithoba temple (1886) in Shitaladevi temple complex made in Basalt has a Gothic influence. There are also Art Deco temples like Gamdevi temple and Datta temple at Prabhadevi designed by architect GB. Mhatre. In this community, the Mantri family built at least six temples and owned more temples than any other family. You often mention the Desai family of Malad in your book. Can you tell us more about them? Salsette was divided into two parts—Malad and Marol. Both provinces were governed by a Desai, a hereditary officer similar to the title of a Deshmukh. Before the British judicial courts were introduced, every conflict or dispute was solved on a community or a village level. However, in this case the Desai had the right to call for a Mahasabha or the high assembly which was the apex of the judiciary system in a province and was related to all communities residing in it. Cases discussed in such a sabha were related to use of abusive language, drunkenness, breach of promise of marriage, defaming a Brahmin, maintenance to a married woman etc. The Bimbakhyana was the outcome of such a Mahasabha, which was attended by 3,655 people and it lasted for 21 days. Family tree of the Anjurkar Naik family, shaped like a plant with many pineapples, as the fruit represented many generations (Courtesy: Santosh Naik. Photography by Amar Reddy) Some Pathare Kshatriya families have diligently traced their ancestry. What’s the significance of these family trees? It seems that there was a sense of responsibility observed within every family in order to remember the names of ancestors. These family trees helped understand the relationship of a person with each other, family hierarchy, one’s participation in festivals and death rituals, and sometimes solving property disputes too. Few family trees also highlighted conversation of a particular branch to Christianity by the Portuguese. These family trees also document names of Mula-purushas or a person from whom the lineage begins. SURSA
