After weeks of avoiding the abortion allegations against Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is putting money behind the accusations that have roiled the key race. Warnock’s campaign released a new television ad on Thursday that highlight the allegations that Walker paid for a woman’s abortion and encouraged her to have another one. The Republican has repeatedly denied the accusations and CNN has not independently confirmed them. The ad, titled “Hypocrite,” contrasts those allegations with Walker’s support for abortion bans with no exceptions, something the Republican called for as recently as this summer. MORE ON KEY SENATE RACES ‘People are just hitting their heads against the wall’: Democrats fret another Johnson win Walker as recently as August indicated he opposed exceptions to abortion, contrary to debate claim Fetterman’s campaign releases new report from his doctor that says he ‘has no work restrictions’ New Trump super PAC adds investments in five key Senate battlegrounds See Senate race ratings by Inside Elections “For you, Herschel Walker wants to ban abortion,” says a narrator, before playing comments the Republican made supporting no exceptions to a national abortion ban. “But for himself,” the narrator then asks before playing news reports about the allegations against Walker. The ad includes video from an interview Walker gave to NBC, where the Republican candidate acknowledged that he sent a $700 check to a woman who alleges the money was provided to reimburse her for an abortion, though Walker denies the check was for that purpose. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s my signature or not,” Walker said during the interview, before examining the document and concluding, “Yes, that’s my check.” Rachel Petri, Warnock’s deputy campaign manager, said the ad focused on the abortion allegations against Walker is “another example of how he isn’t ready to represent Georgia.” “As we’ve done throughout the campaign, we are making sure Georgians know the facts about Herschel Walker’s record, including his support for a nationwide abortion ban and no exceptions for rape, incest or to protect the mother’s life,” Petri said. A Walker campaign spokesperson did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the new ad. The Senate race in Georgia is one of the most closely watched contests in the country, with Democrats hoping Warnock can win a full term for the seat he won in a special election nearly two years ago. Despite some initial concerns about Walker, Republicans coalesced around the former football player at the urging of former President Donald Trump, who got behind him in early 2021. A survey released earlier this month, which was conducted after the allegations about Walker emerged, found Warnock with 52% support among likely voters to 45% for Walker, about the same as in a mid-September poll.Although the Warnock campaign has repeatedly used the abortion issue against Walker in the closing months of the campaign, the Democratic senator has strenuously avoided commenting on the allegations against his opponent, even as outside groups supporting him have seized on the drama. “There are a lot of [allegations], I’m not sure which ones you are referring to,” Warnock said earlier this month when asked about why he wasn’t weighing in more heavily on the Walker allegations. Warnock took the same strategy to his first and only debate against Walker last week, allowing the allegations against the Republican to be just a blip in the hour-long contest. Despite multiple opportunities to bring them up – including during a contentious and extended debate over abortion – Warnock demurred and instead went with a broad attack on Walker’s relationship with the truth. “We will see time and time again, as we have already seen, that my opponent has a problem with the truth,” Warnock said. “And just because he says something doesn’t mean it’s true.” For Democrats, the allegations against Walker represent the height of hypocrisy, given the Republican said as recently as August that he opposes any exceptions to a ban on abortion, despite arguing during the debate that he supports a Georgia law which bans abortions after about six weeks but makes exceptions for cases of rape or incest, pending a timely police report, and in some cases where the pregnant person’s health is at risk. “So, I said, ‘I believe in life.’ I believe in life. And I said, you know, if anyone wants to have an exception, I said, ‘Not in my book,’” Walker said in an August forum. “I said, ‘I’m sorry. I feel bad for anyone that’s a victim of any kind of crime.’ I do. I feel like that. That is terrible and that’s horrible, but we deal with that as it comes.” The ad focused on the allegations against Walker is not the only new ad released by the Warnock team on Thursday. A second ad, titled “Another Lie,” also features video from the NBC interview and his repeated defense that he has been “very transparent” and written a book “about everything I’ve ever done.” “Another lie from Herschel Walker,” says a narrator. “Here’s Walker’s book, and he didn’t write a word about his violence towards women.” The narrator adds: “Herschel Walker is lying again.” CNN has previously reported on Walker allegedly making violent threats to a number of women, including his ex-wife. Walker has said he has dissociative identity disorder, which was previously known as multiple personality disorder, and has sought to advise people with mental health problems. SURSA

The Bering Sea's snow crab po[CENSORED]tion has been in decline over the last five years, but this season the po[CENSORED]tion has collapsed. Snow crabs in the Bering Sea once numbered in the billions. But after a recent and massive po[CENSORED]tion crash the crabs have all but vanished from these waters — and they may not be coming back anytime soon. In 2018, about 3 billion mature snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio) inhabited the Bering Sea along with roughly five billion immature crabs, the Seattle Times reported(opens in new tab). But by late 2021, those numbers hovered around 2.5 million and 6.5 million, respectively — a loss of nearly eight billion crabs in just three years. In February, the National Marine Fishing Service issued an official overfishing notice(opens in new tab) for the po[CENSORED]tion, and in early October, officials at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) made the difficult decision to cancel the season's snow crab harvest for fear of wiping out the crustaceans altogether. “Management of Bering Sea snow crab must now focus on conservation and rebuilding given the condition of the stock,” ADFG representatives said in a statement(opens in new tab). The agency also canceled the fall harvest of Bristol Bay red king crabs (Paralithodes camtschaticus), due to low survey numbers. Miranda Westphal, an area management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, called the decision "tremendously difficult." "It came after a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of tears. It was one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make," she told Live Science What caused the snow crab crash? The main culprit was almost certainly human-caused climate change, though unsustainable fishing practices may also have played a role, the Seattle Times reported(opens in new tab). Snow crabs thrive in the cold northern waters of the Bering Sea floor. For these crabs, water temperature isn’t just a matter of comfort; it plays a critical role in their lifecycle. As seawater cools, it becomes less salty and less buoyant, causing it to sink to the bottom of the ocean. Marine biologists refer to this chilly layer of water as the "cold pool, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(opens in new tab) (NOAA). Many fish and other types of marine life avoid the cold pool, but for juvenile snow crabs, it’s a sanctuary. With virtually no predators willing to venture into this layer's frigid waters, young crabs can grow up in peace. But lately that protection has waned. Record heat waves in 2016, 2018 and 2019 stunted cold pool formation in the Bering Sea, leaving baby crabs vulnerable to predators, according to a Sept. 2 report published by NOAA(opens in new tab). What's more, Westphal said, the warmer waters likely sped up the adult crabs' metabolism, causing them to starve. As anthropogenic climate change progresses over the next few decades, these types of heatwaves are projected to become more common, according to the report. In addition to climate change, some commercial fishing practices may have contributed to the sharp decline in crab numbers. Trawling vessels targeting other marine species in the Bering Sea frequently encounter, catch and discard unwanted snow crabs as "bycatch" ” And when snow crab fishers haul a catch aboard, they toss out crabs that are deemed too small, too young, or whose shells are discolored or marred in some way. Sometimes the crabs survive the shock of being suddenly transported to the surface and then thrown back into the water — but often they do not. In 2020, the ADFG estimated that over 30% of all snow crabs that were captured and tossed back into the Bering Sea died as a result, the Seattle Times reported in April. NOAA’s 2021 assessment for Bering Sea snow crabs (opens in new tab)corroborated these grim findings, with snow crab mortality rising that year and po[CENSORED]tions plummeting.Crabbing is big business in Alaska. The cancellation of crab season this year and the uncertain future of the Bering Sea's snow crabs could have dramatic implications for the industry, which garnered some $280 million in 2016, Anchorage Daily News reported(opens in new tab), and for many local fishers who depend on snow crabs for their livelihoods. "People are simply going to go bankrupt and they’re not going to be able to feed their families," Jamie Goen, executive director for Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers, told KIMA-TV(opens in new tab), a television station in Yakima, Washington. Goen's group, along with several others, is currently calling on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to impose better conservation measures to help rebuild a sustainable snow crab po[CENSORED]tion, KIMA-TV reported. But for now, the crabs will remain off-limits for commercial fishers. "We want to give them the best chance to recover," said Westphal. SURSA

LONDON -- Porsche is still talking with teams about entering Formula One after discussions with championship leaders Red Bull broke down, the governing FIA said. Porsche and Red Bull had been discussing a partnership for months but talks ended in September with the team determined to stay independent. The automaker said at the time that the racing series remained "an attractive prospect" it would continue to monitor, with VW-owned brand Audi already committed to enter from 2026 when engine rules change. "At Spa-Francorchamps in August, Audi announced it was joining the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2026 as a power unit manufacturer," the FIA said in a statement after a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council in London. "This announcement was an endorsement of the hard work by all stakeholders to develop those (new power unit) regulations. "We also note that Porsche are still in discussions with Formula One teams." Porsche was listed in Frankfurt last month in Germany's biggest initial public offering in more than 25 years. SURSA

Arash says he has grown adept at spotting undercover Iranian law enforcement officers. The doctor says they often visit the emergency room of the public hospital where he works as a general practitioner to search for people injured in the protests that have swept the country since 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of the morality police after being accused of violating Iran’s conservative dress code. Arash, 30, does his best to thwart the undercover officers, providing fake names for the people he is treating or sometimes flat out refusing to help. He is among the Iranian doctors and medics who are putting their own freedom – and possibly, their lives – at risk by helping the protesters, either by treating them on the front lines of the demonstrations or covering up the nature of their injuries when they seek treatment in public hospitals. And with Iranian authorities becoming increasingly heavy handed in their efforts to silence the protests, there are many in need of his help. It’s difficult to know exactly how many protesters have been killed or injured since Amini’s death in September, with various groups giving different estimates. Iran Human Rights, which is based in Norway, estimates that at least 201 protesters have died from injuries sustained in clashes with law enforcement agencies; Iranian state affiliated media said the toll, as of the end of September was 60. Arash’s hospital treats only a fraction of those injured, but he says he sees a “wave” of people coming in for treatment every time a protest is on – both genuine protesters and undercover police on the lookout for injuries their own colleagues have likely caused. Photos of injuries sent by protesters to Dr. Kayvan Mirhadi on Instagram. Photos of injuries sent by protesters to Dr. Kayvan Mirhadi on Instagram. And while few of those seeking treatment would openly admit to having been at the protests, the nature of their injuries – pellet wounds and baton bruises are common – are tell-tale signs easily spotted both by the undercover officers hunting them and doctors like Arash. When he’s not working at the hospital, Arash goes to the protests to provide first aid, despite the risks to his own safety. “My conscience can’t bear not to do anything to help my compatriots,” Arash says. CNN agreed to use a pseudonym to protect his identity, as he feared reprisals from the government. He and other medics like him do their best to treat mild injuries on the spot, but in more severe cases, he says, “We try not to let them die and then we transfer them to hospital as an emergency.” An impossible choice With fear of arrest putting off many protesters from seeking help openly, those suffering major injuries face an impossible choice: “Spend the next 10 years of my life in prison or let this broken femur heal on its own,” as Dr. Kayvan Mirhadi, an Iranian American doctor based in the state of New York, puts it. Mirhadi helps to link up injured protesters who contact him on Instagram with doctors based in Iran who are willing to help – and can be trusted to keep quiet. When the protests began, Mirhadi’s inbox was flooded with pleas for help. The doctor was stunned by the messages, often accompanied by photos of pellet shot wounds, broken bones and heads split open. “Salam doctor… What to do with all these small bullets? … The hospital is full of police with ordinary clothing. The moment we enter there, they will arrest us. If the bullets remain inside, is it dangerous? Doctor, for god sake please answer me,” reads one message. A picture obtained by AFP outside Iran, shows people gathering next to a burning motorcycle in Tehran on October 8, 2022. Biden 'stunned' by Iranian protests: 'It's awakened something that I don't think will be quieted in a long, long time' Mirhadi says he regularly receives over 500 messages a day. Many remain unread. Giving and receiving help can be dangerous for both parties – protesters worry about doctors reporting them to the police, while doctors risk being ambushed by police posing as protesters seeking help. Nobody knows who they can trust. About a week ago, Mirhadi says a doctor friend of his was arrested for treating protesters. “He’s been trying to help as much as he can… Getting in his car driving around Tehran to find this person who’s bleeding inside the house and trying to stabilize them,” Mirhadi says. “He’s a doctor, he didn’t do anything wrong.” CNN reached out to Iranian officials for comment about the apparent arrest of protesters in hospitals but received no response. No option but to hide Mirhadi believes giving or receiving treatment for injuries shouldn’t be a matter of politics, but a basic human right. But for now at least, many protesters – other than those with the most severe injuries – feel they have no option but to hide away. TOPSHOT - A picture obtained by AFP outside Iran, shows people gathering next to a burning motorcycle in the capital Tehran on October 8, 2022. - Iran has been torn by the biggest wave of social unrest in almost three years, which has seen protesters, including university students and even young schoolgirls chant "Woman, Life, Freedom". (Photo by AFP) (Photo by -/AFP via Getty Images) How Iran's protests transformed into a national uprising CNN spoke to several who had avoided going to hospital and instead sought help from friends or family with medical experience. “Fortunately, my sister is a doctor. She brought me medicine like pomade, serum and tablets so my wounds would heal,” says Amir, 18. CNN agreed to use a pseudonym to protect his identity, as he feared reprisals from the government. “I couldn’t go to the hospital or call the emergency services. They use ambulances to arrest and detain people. No place in the world has done this – but they did it in Iran,” he adds. ‘She deserves to be alive’ For Arash, the GP at the public hospital, there is one patient that won’t leave his mind. Five days ago, he says a 16-year-old girl was brought into the emergency room by a group of protesters. She’d been struck on the head with a baton and suffered a “massive” hemorrhage and a brain contusion. She was rushed to emergency surgery, but died anyway. Some protesters have become faces of the movement after paying the ultimate price, but in this case the girl’s family chose not to publicize her death. “That’s why she is stuck in my mind,” Arash says. “Because she deserves to be alive, at least in my memory, and be there freely.” SURSA

[Politics] A dizzying week for Trump’s legal issues
Andy アンディ posted a topic in Politics / Economics
Just try keeping track of the dizzying web of legal issues confronting or somehow involving former President Donald Trump and his allies, all of which he lumps into the category of “witch hunt.” Here are some of the major developments this week: Classified documents – The Justice Department on Friday officially appealed the appointment of the special master to oversee the review of documents seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August. The special master had been requested by Trump, was granted by a Trump-appointed judge and had the effect of slowing the investigation. Congress – The House January 6 committee subpoenaed him for documents and testimony as it wrapped up its final public hearing before the midterm elections. The lawmakers want Trump to respond to their allegations, backed up by testimony at hearings, that Trump personally helped incite the Capitol insurrection and tried to overturn the 2020 election. Trump responded with a 14-page screed calling the committee’s inquiry a “Charade and Witch Hunt” and repeating his lies about the 2020 elections – but without saying whether he will comply with the subpoena. Read a fact check of Trump’s letter. New York – The state’s attorney general, Letitia James, is trying to block Trump’s company from transferring assets to any entities without court approval. The state says the same day it sued the Trump Organization, the company incorporated a new entity in Delaware. James is suing Trump, his three oldest children and his company for misrepresenting their assets to obtain favorable loan rates and tax benefits. In testimony before investigators earlier this year, before invoking his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination, Trump called the probe “the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country.” Georgia – CNN reported that a pro-Trump operative who was caught on tape participating in a Georgia voting system breach after the 2020 election testified before the special grand jury investigating efforts to overturn the outcome in that state, according to two sources. Federal January 6 investigation – Two former Trump administration officials were spotted outside the Washington, DC, courthouse where the federal grand jury investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack meets. Marc Short was former Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff. Kash Patel was a Trump national security aide and Trump loyalist. Supreme Court – The court declined Trump’s request for it to intervene in the Justice Department’s investigation related to the Mar-a-Lago classified documents saga. There’s another case on the horizon: New York City – Trump’s company goes on trial by New York City prosecutors for breaking tax laws later this month. When the Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that prosecutors could access his financial information, of course Trump called it a “witch hunt.” Not all of the developments are unwelcome to Trump: Special counsel – Igor Danchenko, the primary source for the infamous and flawed dossier that helped spark the FBI probe of Trump’s ties to Russia after the 2016 election, is on trial for lying to the FBI, although the judge dropped one of five charges against him Friday. The Russia investigation, remember, was what Trump first started calling a “witch hunt.” The Danchenko trial is likely the last gasp of special counsel John Durham’s inquiry into the Russia probe, which seems like a lifetime ago. That the Trump-requested special counsel to investigate the Russia investigation is still active years later means we can expect the aftershocks of Trump’s presidency to continue for years to come. A video of former President Donald Trump is played during the House January 6 committee hearing on October 13. A video of former President Donald Trump is played during the House January 6 committee hearing on October 13. It could also be a model for what’s to come. While inquiries into Trump’s finances and his 2020 and 2021 actions led by state, city and federal authorities would continue, if Republicans win control of the House of Representatives as a result of November’s election, they’ve indicated they’ll shut down the January 6 committee and launch an investigation of the investigation. We do not know how these various inquiries will end, but we can assume Trump will continue to say that elections are rigged even if Republicans seize control of the House and the Senate. He said there was massive voter fraud in the 2016 election, which he won. He said there was massive voter fraud in the 2020 election, which he publicly refuses to admit he lost. And we can assume he will continue to call any investigation a “witch hunt.” Trump will question any election Another thing the House committee tried to do was allege Trump’s plan to reject the 2020 results was “premeditated.” As CNN’s Chris Cillizza noted Thursday, Trump made very clear leading up to the election that he would reject the results. “He wasn’t keeping the plan he eventually executed – insisting the election was stolen – a big secret,” Cillizza wrote of Trump, appending a list of times in 2020 when Trump refused to say he would abide by the results. An interesting report on split-ticket voters in Georgia Now Republicans are looking to win control of the House and potentially the Senate, uncovering a great flaw of Trump’s consistent gripes: If it’s all rigged, how can Republicans win? CNN’s Michael Warren reports from Georgia that voters there could reelect Republican Gov. Brian Kemp – in part because he stood up to Trump in 2020 by refusing to overturn election results in the state – but also send Democrat Raphael Warnock back to the Senate, in part because Trump’s hand-picked candidate, Herschel Walker, is so flawed. Trump will benefit if Republicans can seize some power in the coming election, and he will declare it to be a vindication. But there’s a strong argument that any GOP victory in November will happen in spite of him – which is something Republicans will need to grapple with because Trump and his allegations of a “witch hunt” aren’t going anywhere. Shedding fur is useful for cats and dogs. Here's why they do it. A cat getting its hair brushed A cat about to get its fur brushed, which can help prevent hairballs. (Image credit: anastas_ via Getty Images) Cats and dogs enrich their owners' lives, but even the most avid fans of these furry friends may not love all the hair they can shed. But shedding must serve the animals somehow, right? So why do they make fur if they are only going to shed it later? And are there times when shedding signifies a health problem? Shedding is a regular part of life for animals with hair, and not a waste of effort. Normally, shedding helps to remove dead hair and release natural oils in the skin, according to animal health company Zoetis(opens in new tab). If dead hair does not get removed, skin irritation can result. In addition, cats and dogs often seasonally undergo molting, or heavy shedding, about twice a year to help them control their body temperature, veterinarian Angela Martin,(opens in new tab) co-founder of Island Veterinary Group in Huntington Station, New York, told Live Science. This usually happens in the spring and the fall; spring shedding helps pets lose their heavy winter coats, whereas fall shedding helps them prepare to grow winter coats, Zoetis noted. This cycle of shedding may change depending on the amount of time a pet spends inside versus outside. Indoor pets are exposed to air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter, as well as artificial lighting. This may confuse their internal clocks, which can result in relatively constant shedding across the year, according to Zoetis. Related: Fur, wool, hair: What's the difference? Shedding "is also a defense mechanism," Martin said. "If a bear is chasing the dog or cat and grabs the animal but comes away with a mouthful of fur, that dog or cat goes on to live another day. There are other reasons cats and dogs shed. One is stress: "You have probably noticed this at the vet's office," Martin said. Other common causes of shedding include parasites, such as fleas and mites; endocrine diseases, such as diabetes and thyroid disorders; poor nutrition; certain medications; and excessive grooming, she said. Signs of unhealthy shedding include a thin coat or bald patches, Martin said. "When shedding accompanies itch, odor, inflammation of the skin, crusting of the skin, darkening of the skin, or gastrointestinal signs, allergies with secondary skin infections are often to blame," she said. If a pet is losing hair while experiencing weight changes or other systemic symptoms, endocrine conditions may be a more likely explanation, Martin said. Immune system-linked conditions or cancer are less common explanations but are also possible, she said. Some breeds of pets shed more than others. When it comes to cats, Maine coons, Persians and Ragdolls are known to shed a lot, Zoetis noted. In contrast, the sphynx, Siberian, Bengal, Cornish rex, Siamese and Bombay cat breeds shed the least, according to BondVet in New York(opens in new tab). When it comes to dogs, Labrador retrievers, Newfoundlands and Pekingese tend to shed a lot, whereas dachshunds, poodles and border terriers seem almost shed-free, according to the American Kennel Club(opens in new tab). It’s a common misconception that shedding in dogs depends on their coat length, according to pet food company Hill’s(opens in new tab). Similarly, in cats, American shorthair cats are among the biggest shedders, pet-sitting company Rover noted(opens in new tab). There is no specific reason why one breed might shed more than another — some pets might be prolific shedders simply because of their natural genetic makeup, according to The Village Vets(opens in new tab), an animal hospital network in Atlanta. Regularly brushing or combing a pet can reduce the amount of hair they shed, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(opens in new tab). This can also help remove dead skin flakes(opens in new tab) and stimulate blood circulation, thus improving the overall condition of their skin. SURSA

Regal Automobiles has announced a significant reduction in the prices of DFSK Glory 580 Pro and Prince Pearl. The development comes shortly after Kia reduced the prices of all Sportage models. The new prices will be as follows: Models Old Prices (Rs.) Discounted Prices (Rs.) Difference (Rs.) DFSK Glory 580 Pro 6,100,000 5,800,000 300,000 DFSK Pearl 1,749,000 1,499,000 250,000 It is worth noting that Regal Automobiles has not disclosed any expiry date for its limited-time offer. Immediately after the local currency gained value against the USD in August, Regal Motors reduced the prices of its cars by up to Rs. 500,000. Interestingly, this step also coincided with the government’s decision to lift the import ban. Although, due to the ongoing economic turmoil, Regal Automobiles, much like other car companies has become less active. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the company had imported two crossover SUVs to Pakistan for testing purposes. The SUVs were SERES S3 EV and DFSK Glory 500.Right now, there is no word regarding their launch in Pakistan, however, it is likely that the company is waiting for the economic chaos to settle before introducing a new product. Queen Elizabeth II’s death triggered national sorrow with thousands of people queuing outside Westminster Abbey when she was lying in the state before her state funeral. Among the general public was former England football captain David Beckham who created quite a stir as he joined others in the queue and waited for over 13 hours to pay respects to the Queen. Opening up about her husband waiting in queue to see Queen Elizabeth lying in state, Victoria Beckham told Today that David “felt very humbled by the experience”. “It was something that he really wanted to do. And he is so happy that he did it. He said the experience was something that he struggles to even express. It meant so much to him,” she said. She also revealed that David met some “great people” in the queue and how he interacted with them. “He was in the queue for 14 hours. He said he met some really amazing people. He was buying them all doughnuts.
