  8. Despite the morphological similarities, rabbits and hares have important differences in their gestation, their behavior and their way of living Rabbits and hares are two species that share several similarities. Both belong to the same family and share a similar morphology. However, there are important differences that must be taken into account when getting to know these animals better. First of all, it must be said that rabbits and hares belong to the Leporidae family. That is, they are lagomorphic mammals. Rabbits, po[CENSORED]rly speaking, are known as a symbol of fertility. For this reason, they are also associated with Easter, the time of year when nature proliferates. Hares, on the other hand, have been associated with regeneration since ancient Egypt and, similarly, with fertility. It may interest you: This is the teporingo, the Mexican rabbit of the volcanoes Both symbolically and biologically, rabbits and hares share characteristics; their similarities make their meanings go hand in hand. Despite this, the differences are not a minor matter. The set of these manage to impose a clear distinction between both animals. What are the differences between rabbits and hares? The doctor and researcher from the Natural Resources Laboratory of the Biology, Technology and Prototypes Unit (UBIPRO) tells the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), that the two species are morphologically very similar. For example, these animals have long legs and ears, however, a first distinctive comes here: hares have even longer legs. The way in which hares mate is very peculiar. It consists of a ritual in which the female is chased by the male. This tests the candidate who, if he reaches her, will manage to mate. It should be noted that this act highlights one of the characteristics that makes hares different from rabbits, that is, their ability to move faster. It may interest you: Why do rabbits have such long ears? Curiosities FOLLOWING THIS CYCLE, GESTATION IS ANOTHER FACTOR. THIS PROCESS TAKES 42 DAYS IN THE HARE. IN RABBITS, 30 IS TAKEN. CONSEQUENTLY, THERE ARE IMPORTANT VARIABLES BETWEEN THE OFFSPRING OF BOTH SPECIES. Newly born hares, also known as lebratos, are recognized by the physical development with which they are given birth. Lebratos, from their first moments outside the mother, are capable of running and feeding themselves. In addition, these animals are born with hair and open eyes. Rabbits have a slower development. They are born hairless and with their eyes closed. They also cannot walk or regulate their own temperature. Similar but not the same The behaviors of these animals are not the same. Rabbits are beings much more likely to live in groups. Hares are more solitary animals. Their living spaces are also different; hares opt for small mounds of earth, rabbits for their burrows. Hares are more of open spaces. When faced with predators, these animals rely on their speed to escape. Rabbits, on the other hand, faced with these dangers that threaten their survival, tend to take refuge in their burrows. Despite these differences, rabbits and hares are herbivorous animals. They feed on young shoots of grass, seeds and fruits. Some even dig up roots or tubers. Hence the po[CENSORED]r image of the rabbit feeding on a carrot. Besides, these animals also often use the bark of trees for their consumption. Both species are threatened by the progressive loss of their habitat. According to UNAM, 15 different species of leporids live in Mexico. Of that total, 8 are endemic. Needless to say, according to the same source, the hunting of wild rabbits and hares is prohibited in Mexico. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/que-diferencias-hay-entre-conejos-y-liebres/
  9. The Genesis brand has been (back) in Europe for about a year now, and so far its models have been fairly conventional. They are good looking and decent to drive, but the range has been wanting for something to truly distinguish it. It would have made sense for Genesis to launch as an electric brand. Instead, it has offered only petrol and diesel engines until now. It does plan to go electric-only by 2030 and the new Genesis GV60 crossover is the first step towards that goal. The GV60’s design is fairly clean, with smooth shapes and few fussy details. Exceptions are the black ducktail spoiler and the ‘Chrome Volt’ window surrounds that mimic a lightning bolt. Split LED lights are a Genesis signature. Illya Verpraet | Road Tester The fundamentals immediately look good. The GV60 uses the same E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, two of our favourite medium-sized EVs. Genesis says it’s here for the long haul, and it has two more EVs – electric versions of the G80 saloon and GV70 crossover – waiting in the wings. It plans to build the brand gradually, though, relying on both the strength of its products and its friendlier, more personal approach to selling its cars. That said, it has quite a lot of brand building to do. In July, it sold just 62 cars. Is the GV60 going to supercharge those sales? The recipe of Kia EV6 with a generous dose of premium appeal sounds like a good start. Let’s see how it stacks up. Range at a glance The GV60 range is relatively simple: there are three trim levels, and they are tied to the power output. Premium uses a single rear motor, while Sport and Sport Plus have dual motors and all-wheel drive. All versions use the same 77.4kWh battery pack. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/genesis/gv60
  10. Russia's gas pipeline to Germany will not reopen as planned on Saturday, state energy firm Gazprom has said. The firm said it had found an oil leak in a turbine on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, meaning it would be closed indefinitely. The pipeline has been shut down for the past three days for what Gazprom described as maintenance work. The news comes amid growing fears that families in the EU will not be able to afford the cost of heating this winter. Energy prices have soared since Russia invaded Ukraine and scarce supplies could push up the cost even further. Europe is attempting to wean itself off Russian energy in an effort to reduce Moscow's ability to finance the war, but the transition may not come quickly enough. Moscow denies using energy supplies as an economic weapon in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed following Russia's invasion. It has blamed the sanctions for holding up routine maintenance of Nord Stream 1, but the EU says this is a pretext. Germany's network regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, said the country was now better prepared for Russian gas supplies to cease, but it urged citizens and companies to cut consumption. Gazprom's announcement came shortly after the G7 nations agreed to cap the price of Russian oil in support of Ukraine. EU told to prepare for Russian gas shut-off Cold showers as German city turns off the gas The G7 (Group of Seven) consists of the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Their introduction of a price cap means countries that sign up to the policy will be permitted to purchase only Russian oil and petroleum products transported via sea that are sold at or below the price cap. However, Russia says it will not export to countries that participate in the cap. The gas pipeline stretches from the Russian coast near St Petersburg to north-eastern Germany and can carry up to 170 million cubic metres of gas a day. It is owned and operated by Nord Stream AG, whose majority shareholder is Gazprom. Germany had also previously supported the construction of a parallel pipeline - Nord Stream 2 - but the project was halted after Russia invaded Ukraine. Gazprom said the fault had been detected at the Portovaya compressor station, with the inspection carried out alongside workers from Siemens, the German firm that maintains the turbine. It said that fixing of oil leaks in key engines was only possible in specialised workshops, which had been hindered by Western sanctions. However, Siemens itself said: "Such leaks do not normally affect the operation of a turbine and can be sealed on site. It is a routine procedure within the scope of maintenance work." This is not the first time since the invasion that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline has been closed. In July, Gazprom cut off supplies completely for 10 days, citing "a maintenance break". It restarted again 10 days later, but at a much reduced level. Speaking to the BBC from the Swiss capital Bern, an economist and energy analyst, Cornelia Meyer, said the gas shutdown would have a major impact on employment and prices. "That really has huge ramifications for gas in Europe which is about four times more expensive than it was a year ago and this cost of living crisis will really soar because it's not just gas," she said. "Gas becomes fertiliser and it's used in many industrial processes, so that will affect jobs, and it will affect costs." The flow of gas through Nord Stream 1 had already been reduced to a relative trickle. Now, once again, it has been halted completely. An oil leak, claims Gazprom - which has previously attributed reduced flows through the pipeline to technical issues related to sanctions. Europe, though, believes President Putin is weaponising gas supplies - deliberately limiting flows through the pipeline to push up prices, in order to test the resolve of Russia's critics. The result, as we've already seen, is soaring energy costs - with businesses and consumers paying a heavy price. The timing of Gazprom's move is certainly interesting. It comes on the same day the G7 announced moves to cap the price of Russia's oil exports. But it also comes shortly after Germany - which is heavily reliant on Russian gas - revealed that its winter storage was filling up faster than expected. A cynic might say this was a last opportunity to tighten the screw, in order to inflict maximum damage over the colder months. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62766867

  17. Due to its characteristics, the French bulldog is one of the dogs that can suffer the most from health problems, warn experts The flat snout, the flattened face, the pointed ears and its size are just some of the factors that have positioned the French bulldog as one of the most po[CENSORED]r dogs. There are also those who see in this breed a peculiar grace that distinguishes them. This has been reflected in a high demand in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States and Spain. To give a better angle on the size of this situation, just look at the latest record of the most po[CENSORED]r breeds according to the American Kennel Club. In this list, the French bulldog ranks second. It may interest you: Norway prohibits the breeding of two breeds of dogs as it is considered animal suffering Given that each year it seems that the breed is better positioned, studies around the French bulldog have sought to know in greater detail what exactly their health condition is. Unfortunately, these works have only shown that this canine breed is one of the most at risk due to its delicate situation. French Bulldog: The Cost of Po[CENSORED]rity Contrary to what the name suggests, the origin of these dogs is not only linked to France, but also to the United Kingdom. Its official recognition came in 1906, when the Kennel Club added this dog to its listings. Since then, the breed has been positioning itself as one of the most requested by owners. The French bulldog, due to its physical characteristics, is part of the brachycephalic dogs. This refers to the fact that these are breeds with a different skull than the rest. Among what distinguishes them are the soft palate, short nasal bones and reduced orifices, small head and flattened face. It may interest you: 8 common diseases in dogs and how they manifest A first study on this matter was carried out by a group of scientists from the Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom. The results were based on data collected from 2,228 French bulldogs at 304 different clinics. These were published in Canine Medicine and Genetics. This research work found that the French bulldog has a strong tendency to develop certain health problems. Scientists noted that ear infections, diarrhea and conjunctivitis are among the most common ailments. On the other hand, due to its physical characteristics, this breed can also suffer from respiratory and skin problems. The second study, from the same institution, highlights the problems detected at the beginning. This time the researchers compared 2,781 French bulldogs with 21,850 non-French bulldogs. They took as a reference the 43 most common ailments in both groups of dogs. The result showed that the first group was more affected due to their body composition. “EXTREME BODY TRAITS SUCH AS FLAT FACE AND LARGE EYES, WHICH ARE OFTEN PERCEIVED AS ‘PRETTY’ OR ‘NORMAL’ FOR THE BREED AND, WORRYINGLY, ‘DESIRABLE,’ PROMOTE HEALTH PROBLEMS,” RESEARCHERS MENTION FOR ANIMAL’S HEALTH. The task is to raise awareness about this problem For the second study it is essential to carry out research that helps the race. The health risks of these dogs is a reality that must be taken into account. What is achieved with works like the one developed by these researchers is a greater awareness of how these animals are living. Measures have already been taken in this regard. A BBC documentary called Pedigree Dogs Exposed made many people aware of the problems with brachycephalic breeds. This prompted the UK Kennel Club to do special reviews of these dogs. In addition, in 2016, a petition signed by more than 40,000 veterinary professionals led to the creation of a group focused on improving the health of these animals. “SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE INFLUENCE OF CELEBRITIES HAVE REALLY BOOSTED THE PO[CENSORED]RITY OF FRENCH BULLDOGS IN RECENT YEARS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEIR ‘CUTE’ CHARACTERISTICS CAN MASK A LOT OF HEALTH PROBLEMS, WHICH MAY REQUIRE EXPENSIVE TREATMENT. THERE IS GROWING CONCERN IN THE VETERINARY PROFESSION THAT MANY OWNERS ARE NOT AWARE OF THESE PROBLEMS WHEN THEY DECIDE TO BRING A FRENCHIE INTO THE FAMILY,” JUSTINE SHOTTON, PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, WARNS ANIMAL’S HEALTH. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/bulldog-frances-una-de-las-razas-con-mayores-riesgos-de-salud/

  18. Porsche is preparing to introduce a second generation of the wildly successful Porsche Taycan EV – and it will be twinned with an electric version of the Porsche Panamera as part of a new “electrified luxury” plan under which up to six electric models will be ushered in by the end of this decade. Both new EVs are based on a sporting version of the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is being developed by Porsche. The so-called SSP Sport structure adopts the backbone of the SSP architecture set to be used by other more volume-orientated electric Volkswagen Group models. However, it will be combined with what have been described to Autocar as “Porsche-specific modules”. Among the key architectural developments being pushed by Porsche for the new SSP Sport platform is a low cabin floor, courtesy of a slimline battery pack, and rear footwells (or foot garages, as they’re known at Porsche) similar to those of the J1 platform used by the existing Taycan. These are also described as being crucial to providing the electric Panamera with packaging comparable with the current Panamera’s and a low centre of gravity for optimised dynamics. The electric Panamera will be sold alongside today’s combustion-engined and plug-in hybrid Panamera models, which are based on Porsche’s MSB platform. The engineering for the electric Panamera is twinned with that of the new Taycan, due out in 2027. The Panamera EV is still in the infancy of development, but the suggestions are that it will have a wheelbase and overall length similar to those of the existing long-wheelbase Panamera sold in China (3100mm and 5199mm). That would place it in direct competition with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 and Lucid Air in terms of size. By comparison, the existing Taycan has a 2900mm wheelbase and runs to 4963mm in length and the follow-up is likely to be similar – so the two models will be differentiated in size. Although the electric Panamera and second-generation Taycan will be based on the SSP Sport platform, the new electric Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne SUVs will use the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which Porsche is developing with Audi. The first car based on the SSP Sport platform, though, will be Porsche’s recently announced seventh model line: a five-metre-plus, seven-seat SUV that’s confirmed to make its debut “around the middle of the decade”. Codenamed K1 (see right), it’s scheduled for production at Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany. That’s also the site that Porsche sources tip to receive the contract to produce the Panamera EV. The upmarket electric liftback is set to offer the choice of either a single or dual-motor drivetrain. It will also gain a further-developed 800V battery with what has been described to Autocar as more energy-efficient cell technology and a higher-silicon-content anode than that used by Porsche today. “We’re targeting higher-margin segments in particular and aim to tap into new sales opportunities in this way,” said Porsche CEO Oliver Blume on the decision to build on the success of the Taycan with an electric version of the larger Panamera. The two new electric Porsche models will share key structural, drivetrain and chassis components as well as a newly developed electrical architecture that’s designed to support level-three autonomous driving functionality, 5G-enabled digital features and an operating system developed in partnership with the Cariad software division of Porsche’s parent company, the Volkswagen Group. The electric Panamera will be sold alongside a facelifted version of the existing second-generation model, which will be launched in 2023. It’s planned to be in production until 2030 on an extended model cycle, according to Porsche sources, providing customers with the choice of traditional ICE, plug-in hybrid or electric power, depending on the market and regulatory framework. The new zero-emissions Panamera is set to receive similar styling to its ICE and PHEV siblings. This approach mirrors that of the Macan and Cayenne, which are set to go electric in 2024 and 2025 respectively. “There will be some unique design elements within the front and rear ends,” said a highly placed Porsche source. “However, the core Panamera design will be the same for both.” At this early stage, it’s unclear whether Porsche plans to mirror the strategy of the existing Panamera and Taycan by offeringtwo distinct body styles – liftback and estate – for its latest electric model. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-panamera-and-taycan-lead-porsches-ev-future

  19. UN nuclear experts have made their first inspection of the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine and are to maintain a presence there. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said the "plant and physical integrity of the plant" had been "violated several times". The inspectors were accompanied to the plant by Russian soldiers after a risky journey delayed by shelling. Russia and Ukraine accused each other of trying to sabotage the mission. Zaporizhzhia, in southern Ukraine, is Europe's largest nuclear plant. It was occupied by Russia soon after it invaded Ukraine in February. Ukrainian staff who continue to operate the plant say Russian troops have used it as a military base and that workers are in effect held at gunpoint. How risky is the stand-off over Ukraine's nuclear plant? Preparing for the worst at Ukraine nuclear plant "We are not going anywhere. The IAEA is now there, it is at the plant and it is not moving - it's going to stay there," Mr Grossi said, once he had crossed back into Ukrainian-held territory. But he did not specify how many people would be staying and for how long. Russia's Interfax news agency reported that around eight to 12 inspectors would stay on, while Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom said five inspectors would stay. The inspectors hope to assess the state of the plant and talk to Ukrainian workers under Russian control. Mr Grossi said that battles taking place near the plant were "not going to stop" the inspection. "There were moments where fire was obvious, heavy machine gun, artillery mortars, at two or three times [it was] really very concerning, I would say, for all of us," he said. The IAEA's former chief inspector Olli Heinonen has told the BBC that if interviews do take place, workers are unlikely to be as "open as they would like to be" over the risks to the safety of themselves and their families. During his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped the inspectors would "draw objective conclusions," but lamented the absence of international journalists among the delegation. "We have clear evidence that Russia did a lot of cynical things to deceive the mission," he added. "The occupiers forced people to lie to the IAEA representatives - to hand over some papers, sign something, say something." Meanwhile, Mr Zelensky's chief of staff accused Russia of trying to "wreck" the mission by shelling the nearby town of Enerhodar, which is under Moscow's control, and the facility. "Criminals must be stopped," Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram, accusing Russia of acting like a "terrorist state". Russia refuted this, stating that 60 Ukrainian "saboteurs" who attempted to recapture the plant by crossing the river on Thursday morning were killed. The EU is giving more than five million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine, as fears grow of an accident at the plant. While recent fighting in the area has caused some damage to the plant, so far there has not been any recorded increase in radiation levels in the area. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62757024
