  1. NVIDIA has just released a new GeForce Hotfix Driver 531.58 which addresses issues some users may encounter within The Last of Us Part 1 & Resident Evil IV Remake. NVIDIA Addresses The Last of Us Part 1 & Resident Evil 4 Remake Issues On PC with GeForce Hotfix Driver 531.58 There have been reports that users running The Last of Us Part 1 on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 GPU may experience random crashes during gameplay that the new driver addresses. The Last of Us Part 1 was released to lots of criticism by PC gamers for its poor optimization on the platform. Both sides, AMD & NVIDIA, have had their fair share of issues but it seems like the port was more or less rushed without going through quality assurance which led Naughty Dog to issue an apology through its Twitter page. Besides The Last of Us Part 1, the new GeForce Hotfix Driver 531.58 also fixes a corruption within Resident Evil IV Remake that occurs when FXAA is enabled. There are also some stability issues with Assassin's Creed Origins that are fixed within the hotfix update. For those who want to try out the new drivers, you can head over here to download them. The new fixes will also be available in the upcoming WHQL driver so it's better to wait for that if you aren't experiencing any issues in these titles. The team at Naughty Dog is also issuing new patches along with a hotfix themselves which is available on PC now. 3. Po[CENSORED]r depictions of the superpredator Tyrannosaurus rex snarling to display its gigantic, knifelike teeth are scientifically inaccurate, new research suggests. Theropod dinosaurs — a group of bipedal, mostly meat-eating dinosaurs that included T. rex, Velociraptor and Spinosaurus — may instead have concealed their deadly chompers behind thin lips that kept their teeth hydrated and tough enough to crush bones. Paleontologists had already suggested that T. rex may have had lips, and there has been debate whether carnivorous dinosaurs looked more like present-day crocodiles, which don’t have lips and have protruding teeth, or if they more likely resembled monitor lizards, whose large teeth are covered by scaly lips. "Dinosaur lips would be more similar to those of many lizards or amphibians," Thomas Cullen(opens in new tab), a paleobiologist at Auburn University in Alabama, and lead author of the new study, told Live Science in an email. "It would be a covering of skin and scales extending from the edge of the jaw enough to cover the side view of the teeth somewhat, and allow the mouth to close with a tight seal that prevents the teeth from being exposed." Teeth need to be hydrated to stay sturdy and healthy, co-author Mark Witton(opens in new tab), a paleontologist, paleoartist and visiting researcher at the University of Portsmouth in England, told Live Science. "Crocodiles and alligators — their teeth are always breaking because they're not as strong, because they're not kept hydrated." Theropod dinosaurs probably didn't have muscles to pull back these flaps of skin into a snarl or toothy grin in the way that filmmakers portrayed them in the "Jurassic Park" movies. Instead, the beasts had a less threatening, gummy smile, according to the study published Thursday (March 30) in the journal Science(opens in new tab). The team dissected an upper tooth from a fossilized Daspletosaurus, a tyrannosaur that was a close relative of T. rex but slightly smaller, according to the Australian Museum(opens in new tab). Dinosaurs continually replaced their teeth, so the researchers selected a relatively mature, 500-day-old tooth to assess its level of wear and determine if it was exposed or protected by lips. The tooth was "pristine," Witton said. "The enamel and everything was as fresh as the day it was baked, so to speak. That's a really good indication that that tooth was well looked after in a hydrated environment." The researchers then investigated if a pair of lips could actually cover the gigantic teeth of carnivorous dinosaurs like T. rex. They compared tooth crown height with jaw length in tyrannosaurs and monitor lizards, which have large teeth relative to their skull that are covered with lips. They found that the proportions were similar in both groups and it was therefore plausible that some dinosaurs could have had lips. However, just how big theropod lips were — and whether they had lips at all — continues to divide experts. "There has been much debate on this issue of tyrannosaur lips over the last few years, and I think this study makes a good case," Steve Brusatte(opens in new tab), a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland who was not involved in the study, told Live Science in an email. "I suspect [the authors] are right, and that tyrannosaurs had more soft tissue covering their teeth than crocodiles, but I'm still on the fence as to whether they had as much stuff covering their teeth as monitor lizards." Some paleontologists remain convinced that theropod dinosaurs sported the lipless look that their crocodile descendants have today. "The authors make claims about tyrannosaur teeth that don't map onto the fossils I've seen," Thomas Carr(opens in new tab), an associate professor at Carthage College in Wisconsin, and lead author of a 2017 study on tyrannosaur lips published in the journal Scientific Reports(opens in new tab), told Live Science in an email. In the study, Carr found that wrinkles on tyrannosaur skulls, which are printed onto the bone by their scales, are identical to those of crocodiles and do not extend beyond the jawline. This suggests that "tyrannosaurs had the lipless appearance of crocodylians," Carr said. "The only resolution for this impasse will have to come from the fossil record," he added. https://www.livescience.com/t-rex-had-thin-lips-and-a-gummy-smile-controversial-study-suggests
  4. The next-generation Maserati Quattroporte is about to be signed off ahead of its launch in 2024, when it will go on sale as a smaller, more luxurious and electric-only replacement for both the current V8 car and its Ghibli sibling. Based on the STLA architecture that will underpin all future EVs from Maserati (and most models from its 13 Stellantis sibling brands), the Quattroporte Folgore will be the brand’s third electric car, but its first to be offered without a combustion option. As a result, it will play a key role in shaping the brand’s future as it pushes to ditch combustion power by 2030. Giving Autocar the first details of Maserati’s hotly anticipated Porsche Taycan rival, CEO Davide Grasso said it is “unmistakably a Maserati” but also “such a disruptive design project”, suggesting it will take inspiration from the latest Granturismo and Grecale but adopt a radical new look defined by its electric underpinnings – likely to be chiefly influenced by a focus on aerodynamic efficiency. Grasso stopped short of naming any key rivals but he suggested the new EV saloon can stand out on the basis of its overt luxury appeal and “Italian flair”, which will be crucial in cementing the firm’s credentials as a bona fide luxury brand and helping it to maintain the healthy profit margins it achieved in 2022. The new saloon will tend more towards the Quattroporte end of the spectrum than the Maserati Ghibli and come with a lofty price to match, as Maserati moves away from targeting volume sales in the mainstream executive segment. “We’re making the choice of not doing that,” Grasso said. “As a luxury brand, you want to choose what not to do, and then you choose what to do. This is not where I’m going to play. We are not for everybody. We are for those that are willing to pay a premium to have a unique performance and luxury experience.” Grasso pointed to the Grecale as a good example of how to translate Maserati’s luxury credentials into a more accessible, volume-friendly package. He highlighted its driver-focused cockpit, rear leg room and attention to detail as differentiators from rivals. “We have freed ourselves up from thinking about volume,” Grasso said. “Volume is a consequence of what we do. The driver is profitability, because without profitability and quality, luxury doesn’t exist.” All clues point to the Quattroporte EV being a sibling to Alfa Romeo’s upcoming electric Giulia, based on the mid-sized STLA Medium platform and potentially sharing its promised 1000bhp range-topping powertrain in a fearsome Trofeo variant. The new Quattroporte’s positioning also indicates a target price of about £150,000, especially given that it will be sold in electric form only (the Granturismo Folgore will command £200,000). https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2024-maserati-quattroporte-ev-ramps-luxury-appeal
  5. Donald Trump's court hearing has been set for Tuesday afternoon, according to the BBC's US partner CBS News. The former president is expected to fly from Florida on his private plane and hand himself in with federal agents there to protect him. A grand jury has indicted Mr Trump in connection with a $130,000 (£105,000) pay-out to porn star Stormy Daniels. The charges are not yet public, and a lawyer for Mr Trump said on Friday that he too has yet to read the indictment. A law enforcement official told CBS that Mr Trump is expected to fly his private plane to New York on Monday before surrendering to officials on Tuesday. The process is likely to involve dozens or possibly hundreds of Secret Service agents, the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity. Mr Trump will not be handcuffed, the official added, saying that shackles are typically only used on suspects who are thought to be a flight or safety risk. What Trump indictment means - a simple guide The hearing is due to take place at 14:15 local time (19:15GMT). Mr Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told ABC News that Mr Trump will "probably" appear in court on Tuesday, "but nothing is certain". Prosecutors "will try and get every ounce of publicity they can from this thing", he said, adding "the president will not be put in handcuffs". "I understand they're going to be closing off blocks around the courthouse, shutting down the courthouse," he continued. Security is being co-ordinated by the FBI, NYPD, Secret Service and New York City court officers. Sources tell CBS that they are bracing for possible scenarios that include attacks against Mr Trump, prosecutors, jurors or members of the public. The district attorney's office has received "many threats", the sources said. On Friday morning, the streets around the courthouse were calm but the barricades were going up in anticipation of what may come next week. Police officers were on patrol and security plans were being put into place. Many expect the area to go into lockdown when the former president attends court. The district attorney's office had initially asked Mr Trump to surrender on Friday, according to Politico, but the request was rejected because more time was needed for security preparations. Mr Trump, 76, denies wrongdoing. He is the first serving or former US president to face a criminal charge. It is unclear how many charges are contained in the indictment, which is still sealed. We knew Trump charges were coming - it's still explosive This is what will happen when Trump is arrested Media reports have said the ex-president faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud and Mr Tacopina said on Thursday he thought there would be 34. But on Friday, he said he did not know how many. "We know what the subject matter is, we know the basis of the charges. We don't know the exact counts or how they're formulated," he said. On Friday Mr Trump began attacking the judge assigned to his case in an effort to undermine the credibility of the investigation and rally his base to his defence. Republicans - including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy - have accused the Manhattan district attorney of weaponising the criminal justice system to influence next year's presidential election. Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, who Mr Trump recently suggested should run for Senate, called on followers to protest and said she plans to be present in New York next week. In response, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said the charges had been brought by citizens of New York doing their civic duty - and neither the former president nor Congress could interfere with proceedings. In Washington, the US Capitol Police, which are tasked with safeguarding lawmakers in Congress, said the force believes protests will take place across the country and have plans in place to increase security at the US Capitol. In 2016 adult film star Stormy Daniels contacted media outlets offering to sell her account of what she said was an adulterous affair she had with Mr Trump in 2006 - the year after he married his current wife, Melania. Mr Trump's team got wind of this and his lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to Ms Daniels to keep quiet. This is not illegal. However, when Mr Trump reimbursed Mr Cohen, the record for the payment says it was for legal fees. Prosecutors say this amounts to Mr Trump falsifying business records, which is a misdemeanour - a criminal offence - in New York. President Joe Biden declined to comment on the indictment, despite being pressed on the issue by journalists as he left the White House on a trip to Mississippi. Mr Tacopina said Mr Trump was being "pursued by a prosecutor who has obviously very diverse political views from the president. So it's a very troubling case". He said the former president was "not worried at all" about the charges. "He's upset, angry. He's being persecuted politically. That is clear to many people, not only on the Right but on the Left." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65141157

  9. Plans for a government backed non-fungible token (NFT) produced by the Royal Mint have been dropped, the Treasury has announced. Rishi Sunak ordered the creation of a "NFT for Britain" that could be traded online, while chancellor in April 2022. NFTs are assets in the digital world that can be bought and sold, but which have no physical form of their own. The Treasury announced it was "not proceeding with the launch" following a consultation with the Royal Mint. But economic secretary Andrew Griffiths said the department would keep the proposal "under review". What are NFTs and why are some worth millions? Some cryptocurrencies to be regulated in UK NFTs have been touted as the digital answer to collectables, but some sceptics fear they could be a bubble waiting to burst. They have been used as speculative assets and some have sold for millions of dollars. Responding to the announcement, Harriet Baldwin, chair of the Treasury Select Committee, said: "We have not yet seen a lot of evidence that our constituents should be putting their money in these speculative tokens unless they are prepared to lose all their money. "So perhaps that is why the Royal Mint has made this decision in conjunction with the Treasury." NFTs are unique units of digital data that use the same "blockchain" technology behind cryptocurrencies - such as Bitcoin. The records cannot be forged because the blockchain ledger is maintained by thousands of computers around the world. The digital tokens, which emerged in 2014, can be thought of as certificates of ownership for virtual or physical assets, and can be bought using traditional currency or cryptocurrency. The Treasury is working to regulate some cryptocurrencies and had planned to enter the NFT market as part of a wider bid to make the UK a hub for digital payment companies. In April 2022, the then-chancellor Mr Sunak said: "We want to see the [cryptocurrency] businesses of tomorrow - and the jobs they create - here in the UK, and by regulating effectively we can give them the confidence they need to think and invest long-term." Among the best-known NFTs are a series known as the "Bored Ape Yacht Club", which give the bearer ownership over a unique picture of a cartoon ape. Prices of the NFTs plummeted last year after crypto exchange FTX went bankrupt. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65094297
  10. A great white shark with giant scars along its "massive body" may have survived an attack by a pair of orca serial killers that target sharks. Photos show orca teeth marks slashed into the side of the 11.4-foot-long (3.5 meters) shark — apparently from an attempt to rip out and feast on its fatty liver. The photos of the female great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) were taken near Seal Island off False Bay, South Africa, in 2017 during a shark-diving expedition. The timing of these images is key. False Bay used to be a great white shark hotspot , but in 2017 things started to change. Great white sightings started to fall, and by 2019 the sharks had completely abandoned this prime seal-hunting spot. While their disappearance is likely due to a number of factors, scientists believe one of the key drivers was the presence of a pair of orcas (Orcinus orca) — known as Port and Starboard — that had started preying on sharks in the area and eating their livers. At first, attacks were mostly confined to broadnose sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus), but soon the orcas began to turn their attention to great whites. Grisly aerial footage released in 2022 showed the pair in action. Finding a great white shark that survived an early attack could help researchers establish a timeline for when the orcas perfected their ruthless hunting technique. The photos of the scarred great white were published March 14 in the Marine Biological Journal(opens in new tab). Study author Alessandro De Maddalena(opens in new tab), a former adjunct professor of marine vertebrate zoology at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy, told Live Science in an email that he believes Port and Starboard were behind this 2017 attack. However, despite the recent spate of killings, De Maddalena believes that orcas can't easily tear open great white sharks. "I think the reality is much more complex than that,” he said. "Outside of South Africa, only two cases of orca predation on great white sharks have been recorded to date, and this clearly tells us that great whites are not usual prey for orcas." 11. The Audi Q8 E-Tron is not quite the car you think it should be. No, it's not an electric version of the Audi Q8, rather a new name for the the Audi E-tron SUV that only arrived in 2018 as Audi’s first proper EV. Back then it made headlines with its impressive 150kW peak charging rate, but even then the range was nothing to write home about. Five years later, its numbers are only about okay, so it’s a good thing that it’s facelift time. The new name brings the flagship Audi EV's nomenclature in line with the smaller Audi Q4 E-tron and forthcoming Q6 E-tron. Audi will use even numbers for its electric cars and odd numbers for its combustion engined cars. The Q8 remains as is for now, but don't be surprised to see this known as something different in the future (Q7 Sportback, or Q9 perhaps?) There are some visual tweaks over the previous E-tron, including new alloy wheel designs and redesigned bumpers and grilles, but the big news is to be found under the skin. Five years of advances in battery energy density have enabled Audi to increase the usable capacities of the battery packs from 71kWh to 89kWh (in the entry-level 50 variant) and from 89kWh to 106kWh (in the 55 and the sporty Audi SQ8 E-tron). Meanwhile, more advanced motors and a reduced drag coefficient have improved the energy efficiency. Even so, 2.6mpkWh is still pretty poor, and on our test drive in mild, changeable conditions the digital gauge cluster indicated just 2.1mpkWh – a figure that would translate to a real-world range of just 223 miles. When it does need a top-up, the 55 can accept charging rates of up to 170kW – a useful increase but nowhere near the rival Genesis Electrified GV70’s 240kW limit. To top off the upgrades, there’s faster steering, retuned suspension (as before, all variants ride on air springs) and cleverer stability control and traction control. As before, the Q8 E-tron is an understatedly handsome and well-proportioned car, and in Sportback form it doesn’t suffer the ungainliness of some SUV-coupes. Not much has changed inside either, solid build quality and upmarket materials remaining present and correct. The lower touchscreen (for the climate) still does a job that knobs and switches could do better, but it works quite well, as does the main infotainment touchscreen. The sports seats are easy to get comfortable in and there’s no shortage of storage space. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/q8-e-tron
  12. The Florence museum that houses Michelangelo's statue of David has invited teachers and students from a Florida school to visit, after an uproar over an art lesson. The school's principal quit after a complaint about a sixth-grade art class that included an image of the statue. A parent had complained the image was pornographic. Cecilie Hollberg, director of Galleria dell'Accademia, has now issued the invitation to the class. She said the principal should be "rewarded, not punished". "Talking about the Renaissance without showing the David, an undisputed icon of art and culture and of that historical period, would make no sense," Ms Hollberg said. The controversy began when the board of Tallahassee Classical School - a charter school in Florida's state capital - pressured principal Hope Carrasquilla to resign after three parents complained about a lesson that included a photo of the 17ft nude marble statue. The statue, one of the most famous in Western history, depicts the biblical David going to fight Goliath armed only with a sling and his faith in God. The board reportedly targeted Ms Carrasquilla because the parents claimed they weren't notified in advance that a nude would be shown, with one parent calling the statue "pornographic". Principal resigns after students shown David statue The incident has left Florentines and experts on Renaissance art bewildered. The David is considered a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and a symbol of humanist values. It has been displayed in the Galleria dell'Accademia since 1873. Ms Hollberg said she was "astonished", stating that to think that the David statue could be considered pornographic means not only failing to understand the Bible, but Western culture itself. "I cannot believe that actually happened, at first I thought it was fake news, so improbable and absurd was it," she said. "A distinction must be made between nudity and pornography. There is nothing pornographic or aggressive about the David, he is a young boy, a shepherd, who even according to the Bible did not have ostentatious clothes but wanted to defend his people with what he had." The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, also invited the teacher who showed the students the image of Michelangelo's David to visit the city and its works of art. "Mistaking art for pornography is simply ridiculous," he tweeted. "Art is civilisation and those who teach it deserve respect." In an interview with Slate online magazine, Barney Bishop, chairman of the school board, said that last year the principal sent a notice to parents warning them that students were going to see Michelangelo's David, but this wasn't done this year. He called it an "egregious mistake" and said that "parents are entitled to know anytime their child is being taught a controversial topic and picture". According to Florentine art historian and dean of the University for Foreigners in Siena, Tomaso Montanari, such an attitude is "disconcerting". "First comes the dismay at the absence of educational freedom, as it should not be restricted or mani[CENSORED]ted by families," Mr Montanari said. "On the other hand, from a cultural perspective, the Western world has a tendency to associate fundamentalism and censorship with other societies, believing it possesses the capability to spread democratic ideals worldwide. "But this cultural backsliding clearly highlights the presence of fundamentalist views within the West as well." While several parents and teachers plan to protest Ms Carrasquilla's resignation at the school board meeting, she isn't sure she would take the job back even if it were offered. "There's been such controversy and such upheaval," she said in an interview with the Associated Press. "I would really have to consider, 'Is this truly what is best?'" Back in Florence, Ms Hollberg remarked: "From majestic statues to charming fountains and paintings, Italy is overflowing with works of art, not just in its museums, but in all its cities, squares and streets, with some featuring naked figures. "Does that make it pornography? Should entire cities be shut down because of the artistic depictions of the human form?" https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65087218

  15. Possessing laughing gas is to be made a criminal offence for the first time, the government has announced. There will also be tighter controls on retailers to prevent the supply of nitrous oxide for misuse. It goes against recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) which recently advised against new laws to ban nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, sold in metal canisters, is known as NOS and is one of the most-used drugs by UK 16 to 24-year-olds. The details are expected to be released on Monday. The BBC understands the ban would be issued under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which regulates drugs based on their perceived harm and potential for misuse. It is already illegal to produce or supply the gas for its psychoactive effects under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. The law makes production, supply and importation of nitrous oxide for human consumption illegal, but not possession. The change is part of a crackdown on anti-social behaviour, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce on Monday. Laughing gas users risk spine damage, say doctors 'I showed son's ashes to people using laughing gas' A government spokesperson said: "We are concerned about the rise in health and social harms of nitrous oxide and how widely available it is to the public, particularly to young people. Therefore, we are banning nitrous oxide. "We are for the first time making possession of nitrous oxide an offence; preventing supply for misuse by putting tighter controls on retailers; and giving greater powers to law enforcement to take action against those who are in breach." Speaking on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Michael Gove said: "We are doing this because if you walk through any urban park you will see these little silver cannister which are the evidence of people regarding public spaces as arenas for drug taking. "It is unacceptable. People should feel those spaces are being looked after in a way which means they are safe for children." The levelling up secretary said the drug has an "intoxicating and potentially damaging effect on young brains and young nervous systems". Heavy use can lead to a vitamin deficiency that damages nerves in the spinal column. Several drugs charities have criticised the announcement, claiming criminalising possession could lead to the drug becoming more dangerous. Steve Rolles, senior policy analyst at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, said: "The idea that this is a deterrent effect is ridiculous it just criminalises users and will hand control of the product to criminal gangs. "This is just political theatre - if you need any proof you just need to see that they have ignored their own advisers. This is a particularly ugly example of performative politics." Transform Drug Policy Foundation is a charity which campaigns for drugs to be legalised and regulated. Prof Adam Winstock, an addiction medicine specialist and founder of the Global Drug Survey, told the BBC that getting a criminal record "is going to be a far greater harm than the risks for the vast majority of people using nitrous oxide". Reducing the risks of nitrous oxide is "better achieved with smart education, not blunt regulation that may compound existing harms and create new ones", he added. Stronger sentences Earlier this year the Home Office asked the ACMD to provide advice on whether to make possession of nitrous oxide a crime. The report recommended the substance should not be controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act - which allows the use of life sentences for those supplying or producing some drugs. The ACMD stated the Psychoactive Substances Act - which limits prison sentences to a maximum of seven years - "remains appropriate legislation". It said sanctions for the offences would be disproportionate with the level of harm associated with nitrous oxide, as well as creating "significant burdens" for legitimate uses of the substance. The review also found "no substantive evidence of links between nitrous oxide and anti-social behaviour" aside from littering. Alexandre Piot, director of research at the Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group, said it was "shocking that the government feels it knows better than its own independent body of experts set up by law". "The more they don't listen to them, the more drug policy will continue to fail," he said. Nitrous oxide is regularly used as an anaesthetic in medicine and dentistry, and as a gas for making whipped cream in cooking. Anti-social behaviour Labour backed the plans to ban the sale of nitrous oxide. Shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell said its use "causes a huge amount of littering disruption and anti-social behaviour". She added: "We do need to tackle at source these kind of behaviours that are blights on our community." It comes as the government unveils a new strategy to crack down on anti-social behaviour. Public drug use, fly-tipping and low-level crimes such as graffiti are to be targeted with a strategy of "hotspot" policing and "short and sharp" punishments. People who vandalise public spaces will have to repair the damage they cause within 48 hours of being given an order. A pilot, covering 10 areas, aims to show the public such acts are "quickly and visibly" punished. Ms Powell said the plans "amount to nothing". Labour have also accused the government of cutting neighbourhood policing, leading to fewer offenders being punished. "We've heard it all before from this government and I think we have to judge them by their record," Ms Powell added. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65079772
  16. Stunning new footage shows a pair of extremely elusive megamouth sharks (Megachasma pelagios) swimming together off the coast of San Diego. The video, captured by fishers in early September 2022, may show the deep-dwelling beasts in a courtship ritual and is one of just a handful of sightings of the creatures alive. In the 50 years since the species was discovered, there have been just 273 sightings, most involving sharks caught in fishing gear. Only five megamouth sharks have been spotted swimming freely in the wild. Never before had two been seen swimming together. Now, a new study analyzing the footage suggests that the two sharks were engaging in courtship or mating behaviors. Sponsored Links "The curiosity of these fishermen benefited the field as a whole," study lead author Zachary Skelton, a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego, told Live Science. "The 10 minutes the fishermen had with the sharks contains the only knowledge we have on megamouth shark sociality." The elusive megamouth shark can grow to be 18 feet (5.5 meters) in length and weigh up to 2,679 pounds (1,215 kilograms). These bulbous-headed creatures are filter feeders that sift food from the water captured in their enormous mouths. Yet, despite their size and distinctive features, megamouth sharks evaded detection until 1976. "It's pretty darn rare to see one, let alone two at a time swimming at the surface during the day," Christopher G. Lowe(opens in new tab), director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, who was not involved in the study, told Live Science in an email. To better understand megamouth shark behavior, Skelton and colleagues analyzed the footage in light of whatever they could find in the literature on the social behaviors of other filter-feeder sharks, such as basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) and whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). "Because the encounter was so brief, we had to heavily rely on other studies and species to try and make sense of why the sharks were at the surface, why they were together, and why at that specific place," Skelton said. Visible male sex organs known as claspers suggested the smaller of the two sharks was male. And although the team could not confirm the sex of the other shark, they determined that it was probably female, based on a lack of obvious claspers and a series of scars on its back similar to the mating scars found on female sharks from other species. Given that the male was closely following the putative female shark and that neither shark was seen attempting to feed, the researchers concluded that the footage likely reflects a courtship display. The results were published March 13 in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes.(opens in new tab) "This anecdotal observation has all the hallmarks of preco[CENSORED]tory mating behavior," Carl Meyer(opens in new tab), an associate researcher at the Shark Research Lab at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology who was not involved in the study, told Live Science in an email. "We still know comparatively little about the biology and ecology of megamouth sharks so this observation is an interesting addition to our understanding of this species." Neil Hammerschlag(opens in new tab), director of the Shark Research & Conservation Program at the University of Miami, who was not involved in the study, was similarly impressed. "The paper does a good job of speculating what could be occurring," he told Live Science in an email. "The social behavior of [megamouth] sharks is still a bit of a black box to scientists, and observations like these are exciting, generating a bunch of questions and theories that can be further studied." https://www.livescience.com/2-megamouth-sharks-caught-on-video-for-the-1st-time-ever
