Continued fighting in many parts of Ethiopia's Tigray region is hindering efforts to deliver aid, the UN says. Millions of people are said to be running out of food and medicines. UN officials told AFP there was still no access on Friday, despite a deal allowing "unimpeded" humanitarian access to government-controlled areas. The military entered the regional capital Mekelle last weekend and said the month-long conflict with forces of the TPLF group was over. Hundreds of people have reportedly been killed in the fighting with the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced, with a wave of refugees fleeing into Sudan. The BBC managed to speak on Thursday to people in Mekelle who said "fighting is still going on in places near the city". The TPLF has said it is still fighting. Ethiopia's minister in charge of democratisation, Zadig Abraha, dismissed this, saying "there is no war". 'My uncle has lost contact with his family' Why Ethiopia may be marching into guerrilla war Crisis has engulfed Ethiopia. Here’s what it means Saviano Abreu, spokesman for the UN's humanitarian co-ordination office, told AFP: "We have reports of fighting still going on in many parts of Tigray. This is concerning and it's a complex situation for us." On Wednesday, the UN announced it had reached an agreement to deliver aid in areas of Tigray that were government-controlled. But as of Friday, security assessments were still being conducted and three UN officials told AFP that aid was not expected to arrive before next week. "We have been granted this access, this agreement with the federal government. But we also have to have the same kind of agreement with all parties to the conflict to make sure we actually have unconditional free access to Tigray," Mr Abreu said. Among those in need of urgent aid are some 96,000 refugees who fled persecution and compulsory military service in neighbouring Eritrea and have been living in camps in Tigray. Their camps are believed to be running out of food. There are also unconfirmed reports of attacks and abductions. Ann Encontre, head of the UN refugee agency in Ethiopia, said it was urgently trying to get food, medicines and other supplies to the refugees, and assess "very grim" reports on the security of the camps. "We've heard of deaths of refugees, we've heard of some being forced into conscription. We've heard of abductions," she told AFP. Communications blackouts since the start of the fighting have made it difficult to verify such reports.

What is it? Cast your mind back to summer 2019, when the Model 3 arrived in Britain and sightings of its globular form had us pressing our noses up against the glass of our own, suddenly quite archaic-feeling combustion cars. Tesla’s most affordable offering has, in the short time since then, gone from being almost non-existent on our roads to feeling commonplace, especially in London. And this despite it being considerably more expensive than EV hatchback stalwarts such as the Nissan Leaf. In fact, so strong is the brand and capable the product that Tesla’s junior saloon regularly tops monthly EV sales charts in Europe, with only Renault’s Zoe able to keep up. True, at this precise moment, Volkswagen’s box-fresh ID3 – the car ‘seeking forgiveness for Dieselgate’, as Jim Holder accurately put it – is the EV that European buyers want most, but with vital statistics inferior to the American car in almost every way, don’t bank on the novelty factor lasting. To help its cause, Tesla has given the Model 3 an early facelift, though one less comprehensive than those traditionally applied to cars four or five years into the model-cycle. Call it a refresh. The range still consists of three variants, our test car being the entry-level, rear-driven Standard Range model, while both the Long Range and Performance use two electric motors to give them four-wheel drive and larger battery packs that push range from 254 to more than 350 miles. Performance is brisk whichever powertrain you have, and the 283bhp motor in the Standard Range not only propels the car to 60mph in 5.3sec but does so in a manner that feels considerably quicker those numbers suggest. What's it like? The most significant addition to the car is the heat-pump from the Model Y mid-size SUV. I’ll admit, it’s hardly the most exciting upgrade, but is important because powertrain efficiency, rather than brute battery size, is what helps Tesla’s achieve its class-leading driving ranges, and this new pump improves matters in cold weather. The trade-off is that some space in the ‘frunk’ has been sacrificed, but nose-to-tail this remains an impressively spacious car. The other side of the coin is that Tesla is now fitting Michelin’s excellent Pilot Sport 4S tyres, which don’t exactly scream ‘low rolling resistance’. Quite the opposite. Aesthetically, you can tell the updated car by its satin-black door handles, and the subtly updated design for the aero-covers that clip onto the 18in or 19in alloy wheels. The same satin-black finish is dotted about the interior, where you’ll also find two new USB-C ports and a useful two-phone charging pad below the 15in touchscreen, which is unchanged and continues to control almost everything that the steering wheel and pedals do not. The place feels smarter, no question, and all cars are now fitted with an electric tailgate. And to drive? Well, the Model 3 gives off the same exciting and largely intuitive but slightly misconceived vibes it always has. The car is agile and responsive, and superbly airy on the move, with its full-length panoramic roof and barely anything to corrupt the simplicity of the wooden trim that runs along the dashboard top. It’s a shame, then, that the spring rates are so high. This is undoubtedly to make the car feel sporty, but it has the side-effect that ride-quality is unnecessarily reactive both about town and at speed. The steering is also accurate but dumb, which is disappointing because the rear-driven Model 3 is not only well balanced but also throttle-adjustable. Lift while cornering and the nose darts inwards like you'd expect for any mid-engined sports car worth its salt. Nobody would expect Porsche Taycan-grade steering from a car half the price and whose engineers are less experienced at that kind of tuning, but so long as the potential for genuine driving satisfaction remains this clear, it’s frustrating to see it go unfulfilled.

Thought about getting yourself a novelty holiday sweater? An unlikely contender has thrown its name into the humorous knitwear ring, with Microsoft now selling retro-themed clothing to support the charity Girls Who Code. The Christmas holiday season is in full swing, and despite everything awful from this year, you can see glimpses of normality shining through. Starbucks is selling its seasonal drinks, someone in your neighborhood has enough lights on their home to land a plane on the street, and you can proudly make a fool of yourself by donning the kitschiest sweater you can find. Looking for a new laptop? Here's our guide for the best laptops in 2020 Here's where you can find stock of the elusive Xbox series X Check out our review of Windows 10 Microsoft has actually produced the novelty knitwear previously, and was last seen giving away these sweaters to influencers back in 2018. This appears to be the first time that you can buy stock yourself, though, and both existing designs are listed alongside a new MS Paint version for 2020. You'll need to act fast if you want to impress your in-laws with one though, as stock is extremely limited, with many sizes already already sold out. All three are listed on sale for $60, with $20 from each sale going to support Girls Who Code, a charity committed to narrowing the gender gap in computing. Grab one for yourself at the Xbox store whilst stocks last.

Would you like to know exactly what the SSD you’re buying is capable of when you purchase it at retail? Unfortunately that’s becoming more difficult because some SSD manufacturers are now changing not only the NAND flash but also the SSD controller after the original products have been released and reviewed, but they aren’t disclosing that practice to customers. We’ve dug into the matter and tested three different versions of one SSD and found big differences in performance, but the SSDs all come with the same product name, number, and sticker on the drive. As our testing shows, the changes have a big impact on performance. Among other declines, one altered Adata SSD suffered from a 41% reduction in file copy performance and a 500 MBps decline in light workloads after the changes. In fact, one revision can’t even deliver on the rated 3,500/3,000 MBps specification, not to mention the rated 4K random performance, like the other revisions. In recent years we’ve seen many SSDs pass through our labs. But unfortunately, we can’t cover every hardware and firmware configuration on the market. Most SSD makers launch a new product and try to stick to that hardware component layout for the entirety of the SSD’s life cycle. And when hardware changes, or even in some instances just the firmware, the company will launch a new SKU. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, and changing the NAND flash, which can have a big performance impact, has become a common but questionable practice in the SSD industry. Now that trend has evolved into a more worrisome pattern: Some smaller SSD manufacturers are now silently changing the SSD controller, too, which has even broader implications. Adata’s XPG SX8200 Pro sat atop our best SSDs list since the original review back in 2018. It was only upon the launch of the latest generation of SSDs that we retired the SSD from the list. But, just as we retired the top-listed SSD, we noticed that Adata had changed the controller, firmware and NAND on its XPG SX8200 Pro, without informing consumers, an action that opened the company up to controversy and customer backlash. Some customers have even returned their SSDs. The company admitted to us that it had switched from an SMI SM2262ENG to an SMI SM2262G controller, but said that new drives should offer similar performance and still meet its published specs. Those published specs are fairly broad as they only state that the drive uses an SMI controller (not which one) and that it can get up to 3,500 / 3,000 MBps sequential reads and writes with up to 390K / 380K IOPS. We dug deeper and bought a new copy of the drive from a retail outlet, finding that it has different components than the original model. The company also sent us a new sample with yet another layout.

[Update: As a reminder, you still have a few more hours to get the DLC for free from the eShop! Wait, Borderlands 3 is on Switch? No! We're talking about Borderlands 2 today! I know, re-releases in this modern era have made everything pretty confusing. Often times we're talking about the old more than the new these days. Anyway, here's a bit of a PSA. If you own Borderlands 2 on Switch, you can get the Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary DLC for free. Is it particularly good? Nah. But it's free! And it serves as lead-in for Borderlands 3, which...isn't on Switch. Still, it's free! You just need the Legendary or Handsome collections to play it. In fact, you can download it regardless of your ownership of Borderlands right now. Just head to the eShop landing page for Borderlands 2, and scroll to the bottom. Find "individual DLC" and click the Fight for Sanctuary link. Get it even if you have no intention of buying Borderlands 2 on Switch: just in case you get it for free one day. To access the DLC, you'll need to be level 30, but you can also take advantage of an in-game option to create a level 30 character from the main menu, which will automatically warp you into the new stuff. You have until December 3, 2020 at 8:59 AM PT to get it!

The new, eighth-generation Golf R is the fastest and most powerful series-production version of Volkswagen’s family hatchback yet. It's the fifth member of the brand’s significantly expanded performance line-up, and goes on sale today priced from £39,270. Like its new Arteon R and Tiguan R stablemates, the top-rung Golf takes 316bhp and 310lb ft from an evolved version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that has powered the R-badged model since 2009. The subtle power and torque boosts for the fourth iteration of the EA888 unit – dubbed the Evo4 – bring the Golf R’s 0-62mph sprint time down by 0.2sec to 4.7sec, plus Volkswagen claims peak torque is available from 2100rpm all the way through to 5350rpm. The focus hasn’t been solely on improving outright performance, however, with a series of tweaks to the drivetrain aimed at improving agility and responsiveness over the previous car. The Golf R receives the same upgraded version of Volkswagen’s torque-vectoring system as fitted to the hot Arteon and Tiguan, meaning drive is distributed variably between the rear wheels for the first time, rather than just between the front and rear axle. Using a pair of electronically operated multi-disc clutches, the system is said to balance output across the axle from 0-100% within milliseconds. Elsewhere, the camber on the front axle has been upped by 1.3deg, the stabiliser and spring rates have been raised by 10% and the steering software has been tweaked for a more direct turn-in response. Some 1.2kg of unsprung mass has been shaved from the braking system, too, while the front aluminum subframe has been lightened by 3kg. The brake discs have been expanded by 17mm in diameter on the front axle for improved stopping performance and an uprated master cylinder gives a “crisp, precise” pedal response. The Golf R is most obviously told apart from standard Golf variants by way of its 20mm suspension drop, “motorsport-style” front splitter, sizeable black rear diffuser, quad-exit exhaust and bespoke wheel designs. Blue brake calipers and a new illuminating blue strip across the grille round off the exterior upgrades. Inside, the upgrades include sports seats with blue inserts, a sports steering wheel, stainless-steel pedals and a selection of R-specific displays for the touchscreen infotainment system. A new R-view, for example, displays a horizontally oriented rev counter and gives gearchange recommendations when the car is driven in manual mode. The optional R Performance upgrade package returns for the eighth-generation model, removing the 155mph limiter for a top speed of 168mph, gaining a larger rear spoiler for added downforce and wearing a set of 19in sports wheels as standard. This pack also brings two additional driving modes: Special, which has been configured especially for optimum performance at the Nürburgring (where the new Golf R is said to beat its predecessor’s lap time by 17sec) and Drift, which Volkswagen said “opens up a whole new level of driving dynamics away from public roads and makes the experience behind the wheel even more fun”. As before, an Akrapovic titanium performance exhaust system is available, weighing 7kg less than the standard system and bringing valve control so that the driver can adjust the exhaust volume. Driving modes are selected using a new wheel-mounted R button, which puts the car into Race upon a hard press. Despite the enhanced focus on driver engagement for the new Golf R, Volkswagen has no plans to reintroduce the option of a manual gearbox, citing greater demand for the dual-clutch automatic (DSG), which it said gives “the best of both worlds” and is equipped with a manual shift function via paddles behind the wheel. However, as for whether an uprated version of the EA888 engine could be introduced for a more hardcore Golf in future, head of technical development Jan Schiedek-Jacht was less categoric. “As a good engineer, you’re never really satisfied with what you have achieved. From that angle, we might look into further improvements in the future,” he said, fuelling the suggestion previously reported by Autocar that Volkswagen is plotting a 400bhp Golf R Plus to rival Mercedes-AMG’s A45 S.

Record-high Covid infections and hospitalisations have been reported in the US, with fears they will not slow in the run-up to Christmas. The number of people in hospital passed 100,000 for the first time, a figure that has doubled since early November. New cases rose by a record 195,695 on Wednesday, and the daily death toll of 2,733 was close to a new high. The city of Los Angeles has reacted to an unprecedented surge there by ordering residents to stay at home. Nationwide, infections are now closing in on 14 million, with more than 264,000 deaths, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project. Figures have continued to soar in recent weeks, with around a million new infections reported every week in November. - equivalent to 99 every minute. In response to surging numbers, US authorities have warned that the country's healthcare system faces an unprecedented strain this winter. Is this Covid wave in the US the worst yet? What does UK vaccine approval mean for US? "The reality is that December, January and February are going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation," said Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). California, Texas and Florida - the three most populous US states - are among the worst-affected areas of the country, and have each registered more than one million cases. In the city of Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti issued an emergency order for residents to stay home with immediate affect, following an unprecedented surge of infections. A similar order is already in place in Los Angeles county - the current epicentre of America's outbreak - where some hospitals are already approaching full capacity. Authorities reported 5,987 cases on Tuesday, bringing the county's total to 414,185. US officials have said they expect infection numbers to continue rising over the next few days because many people travelled over the Thanksgiving holiday, ignoring government advice."Travel volume was high over Thanksgiving," said Cindy Friedman, chief of the travellers' health branch at the CDC. "Even if only a small percentage of those people were carrying the disease and passed it on to other people, that can translate into hundreds of thousands of additional infections."

Nvidia might have launched its RTX 3090 way back in September, but it and its partners can't seem to produce enough to meet demand. Meanwhile, the release of new variants isn't stopping either, and according to GDM and VideoCardz Asus is apparently coming out with the RTX 3090 Turbo, which comes with the same 24GB of GDDR6X RAM as other RTX 3090 cards. However the RTX 3090 Turbo provides a 25 MHz overclock and uses a blower-style cooler. Although blower-coolers have a (justified) reputation for being loud and inefficient, they have their use cases. For one, they dump all the heat outside the chassis ensuring the high heat output doesn't clog up the rest of your system -- with the RTX 3090's 350 W TDP, dumping the heat directly outside the system can make quite a difference. They're also cheap. That latter argument is probably the most relevant argument for their existence -- a cheap cooler means the graphics card can be had for less, which at the end of the day translates to better value for your money. If you're someone that simply doesn't care about noise levels or thermals, and just wants a functional RTX 3090 card for creative workloads because you need that 24 GB of GDDR6X memory, a card like this can be a "cheap" ticket in. Conversely, these cards are also po[CENSORED]r among watercooling crowds that do care about thermals and noise levels, because why pay extra for a cooler that you're going to ditch in favor of a waterblock anyway? The card occupies only two expansion slots, and its two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors reside at the back end of the GPU instead of on the side. There's also no RGB to be found here, and display outputs consist of three DisplayPort 1.4a ports and one HDMI 2.1 output. Asus' RTX 3090 Turbo does come with a small factory overclock to 1725 MHz, which is 25 MHz over Nvidia's reference specification. You'll have to activate it manually though, and chances are your real-life Boost speeds will be lower due to the limited cooling potential of the blower cooler. Nvidia's RTX 3090 is the company's latest flagship graphics card (our review of the Founder's Edition RTX 3090 here), though with 24 GB of GDDR6X memory and a whopping 10,496 CUDA core count, it's aimed primarily at creative professionals who need the grunt for rendering. Of course, if money is no objection, it does make for the Best 4K Gaming Card currently on the market. Asus hasn't revealed pricing for this model, but in a world without scalpers, we would expect this one to land close, or at Nvidia's MSRP of $1499.

Sam & Max Save the World Remastered (Switch, PC) Developer: Telltale Games, Skunkape Games Publisher: Skunkape Games Released: December 2, 2020 MSRP: $19.99 Sam & Max Save the World Remastered is a textbook example of how to reinvigorate a fairly recent game for modern audiences. 2006 wasn’t that long ago, and yet, there is so much better technology available now that even good titles from that era of gaming could use a bit of sprucing up. The developers at Skunkape Games, a small team made up of people who worked on the Sam & Max titles at Telltale, have kept what people enjoyed about these games the first time around — the story, the art direction, the puzzles — and gussied up the rest for the HD era. Save the World Remastered features widescreen support, incredible new lighting effects, remastered audio, and updated character models, some of which were made with series creator Steve Purcell’s guidance. More than ever before, it feels like you're playing a cartoon rather than just a game with a decades-old interface. Decades-old is probably a bit harsh as the point-and-click adventure genre is timeless. It’s best with a mouse and keyboard, but the two control options on Switch hold up pretty well. With the Joy-Con or Pro controllers, you freely move Sam with the left control stick and use the right stick to cycle through the interactive objects in each area. Holding the L button will highlight everything you can interface with, which comes in handy when you’re in a setting that’s densely packed with noteworthy items. It’s an exceptionally intuitive control scheme, one that reduces the chance of misclicking on the wrong object. When playing in handheld mode, you do have the option to use touch controls though they tend to not be as reliable as a standard gamepad. When items in an area are adequately spaced out, they work fine, but when I was in a crowded space, I found myself having to tap the screen several times to get Sam to approach the exact object I was pointing him toward. That happened most often at Sam and Max’s office, a location you’ll know quite well by the end of the game. As with its original release, Save the World Remastered is divided up into six loosely connected episodes, each with its own respective narratives. Each episode is an individual case centering around a theme of mind-control and hypnosis, and you’ll visit and revisit a small smattering of locations as you collect items, interrogate witnesses, and generally annoy everyone you run into. While the overarching plot isn’t anything special, the writing is quite clever even if it never really tickled my funny bone. A few of the jokes did elicit some out-loud laughter, but a lot of the humor here is dated in old references. I haven’t heard the words Tae Bo since Akon dropped a track with Eminem, so to have an entire episode revolve around a spoof of the workout craze does the game no favors in feeling fresh in 2020. I know comedy is hard, and while I do appreciate the every-line-is-a-punchline dialogue as it reminds me of the old Marx Brothers talkies, eventually, the Sam set-up/Max punchline routine became predictable. It is hard to completely fault the writers for that though as I imagine it would be less of an issue for me had I played the game as it originally released, with episodes spread out by a couple of weeks, rather than going through them all in one sitting. Each episode will take around 90 minutes of your time to see to the end. Solving each case isn’t too difficult, though certain puzzle solutions require you to have a strong grasp of your surroundings. Unlike some of the recent adventure games I’ve played, I like how Sam & Max Save the World doesn’t just hand me the answer to every solution. I actually had to use my observation skills throughout each episode, and a few of the puzzles brought a sense of pride when I finally figured them out. Even if I didn’t find the game terribly funny, each episode of Sam & Max Save the World Remastered is worth playing as they’re solid little adventures that look and control outstandingly on Switch. With a lot of Telltale’s history up in the air right now, it’s nice to have a team dedicated to keeping its memory alive by remastering some of its classic titles for modern hardware. Here’s to hoping I find more to laugh at in Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space and Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse as remasters of both titles seem to be in the works at Skunkape Games. Sam is a six-foot canine detective with a love of justice. Max is a hyperkinetic rabbity-thing with a taste for mayhem. Together, they're the Freelance Police. And they're about to save the world. Good to have you back, little buddy! In 2006, the comic book crime-fighting duo Sam & Max starred in the first full-fledged episodic game from Telltale, the studio that went on to make The Walking Dead and Batman: The Enemy Within. Now everyone's favorite dog and rabbity-thing are back in Sam & Max Save the World Remastered, a new version of their first season of episodic games that has been lovingly updated by a small group of the original developers with the blessing of Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell. Return to the adventure game that was once called "gaming's first sitcom" and is today known as "the remaster you didn't know you were waiting for." With enhanced graphics, new widescreen and gamepad support, five new musical tracks, and the same brain-tickling puzzles and offbeat humor that won it IGN's Best Adventure GOTY award back in the day, Sam & Max Save the World Remastered is a modern classic that you'll love to play—or play again. Now, let's go save the world... It's just another day at the office for the self-proclaimed Freelance Police when the Commissioner calls in with a disturbing report: former child stars are running amok in the street! What starts as an open-and-shut case of idiotic vandalism balloons into an all-out conspiracy as Sam and Max encounter one miscreant after another who have been mysteriously hypnotized. (You can tell from the "spinny thing" they do with their eyes.) Who's the source of this malfeasance, and what is their dastardly plan? Cracking this case will require Sam's nose for detective work, Max's lack of conscience, an assortment of inventory items, and a little help from neighbors Sybil Pandemik, Bosco, and Jimmy Two-Teeth. From Sam & Max's street to the White House lawn, inside the internet, and all the way to the moon, this baffling mystery gets weirder and funnier as it unfolds.
