  3. The risky thing about making any reboot is getting it wrong – screwing it up so badly that you tarnish what everybody remembers they love about the original. And so to the Lamborghini Countach. A car whose name in Italian roughly translates as ‘crikey, look at that!’, and quite rightly. The original Countach of 1974, Lamborghini’s second mid-engined supercar, was one of the defining cars of the late 20th century. If you had been asked in the ’70s, ’80s or even ’90s to describe what a supercar was, you would have been explaining rakish looks, latent aggression, a low roof, that the engine was probably in the middle and had at least eight but probably 12 cylinders and that the top speed started with a two or T thereabouts. You would have been describing a Countach. So famous is it that as recently as last year, one was inducted into America’s National Historic Vehicle Register, effectively a Hall of Fame for vehicles that define America, which includes only 30 cars. Specifically, it was Countach chassis number 1121112, a 1979 LP400S in black with spoilers front and rear, as used in the film The Cannonball Run. Starring Burt Reynolds and anyone else who was famous in 1981, it was a fictional story but inspired by real events, illegal 1970s races “from sea to shining sea”, from the east of the US to the west. The film didn’t universally go down well. Celebrated critic Roger Ebert said it was “an abdication of artistic responsibility at the lowest possible level of ambition. In other words, they didn’t even care enough to make a good lousy movie.” Well, fine, mate, but, you know… critics. Audiences thought differently and it made a shedload of money. So here to revive it (of a fashion) are me and photographer Luc Lacey, in an east-to-west dash of Britain on its own Route 66, the A66. And we’re in another evocation: the new Countach, a mid-engined V12 supercar with a 221mph top speed, of which Lamborghini is going to make just 112 examples. What do people think of it? The answer depends on who you ask. The Countach’s form “can hardly be improved, but some details can be developed, keeping the basic concept intact”, says Stephen Bayley, co-founder of London’s Design Museum. On seeing the new car and the original together, he says: “Fifty years of history face to face and icons of their time, whose distinctive style and extraordinary performance have earned them their place in the automotive elite.” Link : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-lamborghini-countach-epic-uk-road-trip-reborn-icon

  6. The secret behind this car’s glory emerges the instant that you slow it down. Press the shiny black metal middle pedal and the Jaguar C-Type decelerates with surprising strength, so effective are its discs and their Dunlop hydraulic calipers. It was this mighty ability to shed speed that helped it to win the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours race. Not that this was the C-Type’s first Le Mans victory: it won in 1951, too, and at the first time of trying, then running with drum brakes against less threatening opposition. Why are we telling you about an event that occurred 70-odd years ago? Because Jaguar has for the first time allowed a drive in one of its so-called Continuation C-Types, a 21st-century, forensic recreation of the special-bodied Competition version (hence C-Type) of the XK120 sports car. The trigger for this new build of an old car was the 70th anniversary of that first Le Mans victory, although this recreated C-Type is far from the first Jaguar Continuation model, with new versions of the Jaguar XKSS, Jaguar D-Type, Jaguar E-Type Lightweight and the standard Jaguar E-Type all having been produced in tiny quantities. In the C-Type’s case, the run is of 16 cars, and if you have a loose £1.5 million (plus taxes), you can have one of the final eight cars. It's an absurd price on one level of course, less so if you consider that one of the original 53 cars will cost you upwards of £3m. When you learn of the work that has gone into the recreation of this car you begin to realise how a seven-digit price tag develops. The 3.4-litre XK engine block has been retooled. The complex Dunlop disc brake system, developed out of early-1950s aviation technology, has been reverse-engineered. Intensive detail work followed the recreation of the car in digital form from original blueprints and the measurement of original cars. The 1953 Le Mans-winning iteration of the C-Type was chosen for recreation, this version featuring the-then revolutionary disc brakes and triple Weber carburation for a 220bhp power output. As it weighs only 1063kg, this C-Type goes really rather well – and feels appealingly odd, too. The oddness stems from the car’s newness. Even aboard an expensively restored old car, you’re likely to find components that hint at its age. Not so in this Jaguar, where every old-fashioned-looking item is new and consistently so. That extends to the physical experience, too, this car feeling taut, tight, strong and rattle-free, just as a new car should. Link : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/jaguar/c-type-continuation
  7. The BBC has revealed that a complaint against former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood had previously been referred to police. The complaint is one of six the corporation now says it received about alleged bullying or sexual misconduct by Westwood. Director general Tim Davie said in April "no evidence of complaints" had been found after BBC News and the Guardian revealed accounts of predatory sexual behaviour by the DJ. Westwood denies the allegations. In relation to the police referral, a BBC spokesman said in a statement: "This is a historic case that the BBC has found in its files. We are establishing the facts around it. "It did not relate to conduct at the BBC, BBC premises, or conduct towards a BBC staff member, nor was it an accusation of physical assault." The BBC declined to say whether the other five complaints had been received before or after Mr Davie's statement in April. The spokesman added that the DJ had been "spoken to" following one of the other complaints. And the corporation said it was not aware of what further action was taken about the complaints at the time. The complaints were revealed after BBC News challenged the corporation's response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made in November 2021. The request was part of a joint investigation with the Guardian, which featured the accounts of seven black women who alleged unexpected and unwanted sexual touching and sexual misconduct between 1992 and 2017. They were featured in a BBC Three documentary, Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power. Some worked in the music industry and feared repercussions - with the DJ having a prominent role in an industry long-criticised for its treatment of darker-skinned black women. Allegations about Westwood's behaviour towards young black women had circulated on social media for some time. Westwood, 64, was a presenter on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra between 1994 and 2013, where he hosted the UK's first nationally broadcast hip-hop show. In a response at the time to the documentary, a spokesperson for the DJ said he denied the allegations in their entirety. They said: "Our client confirms that there has never been any complaint made against him, whether officially or unofficially, relating to claims of inappropriate behaviour of the nature described. "No complaint has ever been made to the police, and nobody has ever raised these matters, or any colourably similar, with him directly or with his representatives. "There has been no investigation in relation to him of any nature whatsoever, whether by the police, his employer or indeed any other authority." BBC News has made several attempts to contact him for comment about the complaints, but he has yet to respond. DJ Tim Westwood accused of sexual misconduct Tim Westwood claims are appalling, BBC boss says Westwood steps down from Capital Xtra show The BBC said the six complaints covered the years Westwood worked for the corporation, and some related to conduct outside of the broadcaster. In its response to the BBC News challenge, the corporation said: "We are aware that one of these complaints was referred to police and Westwood was spoken to in relation to another complaint. "We are not aware what further action was taken at this stage. As a result of this, we are looking into what action was taken at the time." Following the joint BBC News and Guardian investigation in April, Mr Davie had said "we looked at our records and we've seen no evidence" of complaints against the DJ. "If something like this were raised or anything comes up, we investigate it fully. And I would hope we were doing that in that time as well," Mr Davie said, referring to Westwood's time at the BBC. "I would simply say if people have evidence where things weren't followed up, or they have concerns in this area, bring it to us. We want to investigate it." The BBC said Mr Davie had set out the position as he understood it at the time. Mr Davie was director of audio and music at the corporation, ultimately overseeing BBC Radio 1, between 2008 and 2012. 'We take this seriously' After the FOI request was submitted in November 2021, the corporation initially responded to say it could "neither confirm nor deny whether the BBC holds the requested information". When the story was published, it said in a statement that it was "shocked to hear of these allegations" but did not "hold information that is helpful for this investigation". In its latest statement, the BBC said: "As we have said, if people have things that they want to raise with the BBC, then they should do so. People have now done so and we will continue to investigate. "We also said that we would dig into what happened in the past. We are doing that with great care. All of that work hasn't concluded and is ongoing. We said we would take this seriously, and we are." The latest disclosures by the broadcaster came after BBC News appealed to the Information Commissioner's Office, which regulates Freedom of Information Act requests in the UK. The BBC said it had volunteered the information about the six complaints outside the scope of the Freedom of Information Act. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-62015958

  9. The long-awaited Hyundai Ioniq 6 – the Korean firm's strikingly styled answer to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 – will break cover in a matter of days. The second Hyundai model to use the modular E-GMP skateboard architecture, the Ioniq 6 is described as an 'electrified streamliner' in reference to its monolithic, curved silhouette - previewed in 2020 by the rakish Prophecy concept – which showcased an overarching focus on aerodynamic efficiency. Hyundai has yet to give a full reveal date, but says it will show off the new saloon's exterior and interior designs later this month. A new official sketch suggests the Prophecy's ethos survives into production, albeit with a number of alterations aimed at improving usability and practicality. Hyundai design boss SangYup Lee told Autocar recently that the final design had been signed off, following reports late last year that a redesign of the model had been ordered. Lee did not comment on the reports, but said of the car: “The Ioniq 6 is in the spirit of Prophecy. The car gets taller because of the skateboard platform. And the design maximises the interior space. There’s also a lot of aerodynamic improvement on the car. It’s been done for a long time.” In September, the Korean Economic Daily reported that the launch of the Ioniq 6 has been pushed back to mid-2022 to allow the body to be lengthened by 20mm, the bumpers and lights to be restyled and the battery to be upsized from 72.6kWh to 77.4kWh. The EV's supposedly belated launch was also attributed to a delayed overhaul of the Asan factory where it will be produced. That site currently builds the combustion-engined Sonata saloon and needs refitting to build cars based on the E-GMP platform. However, a battery capacity of 77.4kWh would just edge the 5's 73kWh pack, which, along with the 6's more overt focus on aerodynamic efficiency, is likely to push the saloon's maximum range beyond 300 miles. It remains unconfirmed whether the Ioniq 5's smaller 58kWh battery will be an option. The 77kWh battery pack is already available in the Kia EV6 crossover from the firm's sibling brand, which suggests the Ioniq 6 could be more closely related to that car technically, in line with its performance billing. That means the rear-wheel-drive version is likely to use a 226bhp motor, while four-wheel-drive cars will produce either 321bhp or – in top-rung N trim - match the EV6 GT's 577bhp https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2022-hyundai-ioniq-6-be-officially-revealed-next-week

  18. A virtual reality headset codenamed Project Cambria is on the way from Meta (previously known as Facebook and/or Oculus) – but no one know's exactly what the new piece of hardware is going to look like. Or do they? Unofficial renders put together by tipster Brad Lynch (via SlashGear) may give us some ideas. Lynch says these renders have been created using leaked information from the supply chain, and he's "250%" convinced about their accuracy. They look similar to the official glimpses we've seen of the hardware (see the top of this article). While the device doesn't look vastly different from the Oculus Quest 2 in terms of its aesthetics, it does appear to be more lightweight and stylish. We're betting that it's going to be significantly more powerful under the hood too. What's coming These renders don't give too much away about the VR headset, but a forward-facing camera is visible: it's thought that this will enable mixed reality or augmented reality support, where digital elements are overlaid over scenes in the real world. Meta has already committed to a 2022 release window for the Project Cambria device, so we should get to see the real thing sooner rather than later. We also know it's going to be a standalone headset that doesn't need to be connected to a PC to run. Eye tracking is one of the key features expected to differentiate the new, more expensive headset from the Oculus Quest 2: that will mean that the parts of a scene that you're looking at will be able to be rendered at a higher quality and in more detail. Analysis: Meta's big plans for VR While Meta has revealed some details about Project Cambria, there's still a lot we don't know about the company's VR plans. What is certain, however, is that there's another big virtual reality and augmented reality push in the offing, metaverse and all. Rumors are also swirling about an Oculus Quest 2 Pro (though the Oculus name will most likely be dropped going forward). Recent reports have hinted that an improved successor to the Oculus Quest 2 could show up in addition to whatever Project Cambria is – although these two leaked devices may end up actually being the same piece of hardware. With all of that in mind, all eyes will be on Meta at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, which is happening on April 20. We're expecting a slew of announcements regarding new games that you can enjoy as immersive virtual reality experiences – and we might just see some new hardware, too. It now seems probable that we'll see at least one, if not two VR devices from the Meta stable before the end of the year. Considering the success of the very impressive Quest 2, these devices could well get many more users exploring virtual worlds and games.
  19. It is fair to say that the Raspberry Pi Pico disrupted the microcontroller market in early 2021. The $4 board has more in common with an Arduino than a Raspberry Pi, but the Pico has proven to be a much more capable beast. With the Raspberry Pi Pico, we can make LEDs blink, build robots and even run Doom. But for those new to programming, microcontrollers and electronics there are a few barriers to entry that need to be broken down. MicroPython is an excellent language for the Raspberry Pi Pico, (bettered only by CircuitPython in our humble opinion) but to the uninitiated it can quickly become “word soup”. Abstracting the code, making it simpler to understand is what we need and luckily PicoZero looks to be the solution. PicoZero takes a page from GPIO Zero’s book in that it is a beginner friendly Python library for common electronics. GPIO Zero, created and maintained by former Raspberry Pi employee Ben Nuttall and Canonical software engineer Dave Jones created a seismic shift for learners. It simplified and exemplified how users could interact with common electronics using Python on the Raspberry Pi. PicoZero from the Raspberry Pi Foundation follows the same principles and while it is still in beta, we just had to build a project with it. Our project will introduce the basic inputs and outputs of the PicoZero module via a reaction game, designed to test the reflexes of two players versus an exceptionally loud buzzer. For This Project You Will Need Raspberry Pi Pico 2 x Push buttons 1 x DC buzzer 1 x 10K Ohm Resistor (Brown-Black-Orange-Gold) 8 x Male to male jumper wires Large breadboard Modelling clay / Play-Doh
