Alfa Romeo will unveil a new sports car early next year and it will be reminiscent of the T33 Stradale, its global boss Jean-Philippe Imparato has confirmed. While the unveil is not expected to be a production model, more likely taking the form of an advanced sketch or concept car, it demonstrates Alfa Romeo has already catapulted itself forwards in the eyes of owner Stellantis in proving it can be successful after a tumultuous few years. Originally, any new sports car from Alfa Romeo was expected to arrive later this decade after the brand had proven itself with models in bigger-selling segments, such as the Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV. The sports car was also expected to be electric, in line with its plans to have an all-electric line-up from 2025, but Imparato hinted that a sports car may arrive much sooner and could even be combustion-engined. “For the moment, I have two scenarios: full ICE or full EV,” said Imparato. “I can tell you it will be very exciting, very selective and very expensive.” He added: “You will see something in that field in terms of sportiness in the first half of 2023. We use one word to define the brand and it is sportiness.” When asked if it could be reminiscent of the T33 Stradale, he said: “I can say yes, but I can’t say anything else. We have so many fantastic ideas based on our iconic history.” Imparato has previously name-checked the Alfa Romeo Spider 'Duetto' as another model he would like to see reflected in any upcoming sports cars. Imparato also confirmed a large electric saloon will arrive in 2027, focused on the US and China, but to be sold in mainland Europe and the UK, too. Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for a rocket attack that killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the occupied part of Donetsk region. Ukraine says the prison was targeted by Russia in an effort to destroy evidence of torture and killing. For its part, Russia said the prison camp in Olenivka was hit by Ukrainian precision rockets. Russian video footage of the aftermath shows a tangle of wrecked bunk beds and badly charred bodies. The BBC cannot independently verify the footage. An adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky said the scene looked like the result of arson after a mass murder. A missile strike would have had the bodies scattered, said the adviser, Oleksiy Arestovych. Those detained are said to have included members of the Azov battalion, who were the last defenders of Mariupol and whom Russia has sought to depict as neo-Nazis and war criminals. "The Russian occupants pursued their criminal goals, thus, to accuse Ukraine of committing 'war crimes', and to hide the torture of prisoners and shootings committed there by the orders of the occupation administration and the command of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation," Ukraine's General Staff said. "The Russian enemy continues his propaganda methods of waging information warfare in order to accuse the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling civilian infrastructure and the po[CENSORED]tion, hiding his own insidious actions." Ukraine's new Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin said he had opened a war crimes investigation into the blast. His office added that it believed about 40 people were killed in the strike and 130 were injured. Daniil Bezsonov, a spokesperson for the Russian-backed separatist Donetsk People's Republic, said the strike had been a "direct hit on a barracks holding prisoners" and the number killed might increase. Russia's defence ministry said the strike had been carried out with US-made Himars artillery and it accused Ukraine of a "deliberately perpetrated" provocation. The ministry produced fragments of what it said were rockets fired by the Himars system. The ministry's spokesperson, Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov, said eight prison staff were also injured in the blast. But Mykhailo Podolyak, another adviser to President Zelensky, said the Russian allegations were "a classic, cynical and elaborate false flag operation" designed to discredit Ukrainian authorities. "We demand a reaction from the UN and international organisations," he added. And Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia of perpetrating "another petrifying war crime". Andriy Biletskyi, a founder of the nationalist Azov Battalion, said a number of the unit's soldiers were among those killed. It has been established that a number of Ukrainian troops who surrendered to Russian forces after a protracted siege at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol were taken to Olenivka. The troops had held out against a relentless Russian assault on the sprawling site for weeks and surrendered in May after using the plant's maze of tunnels to shelter from artillery and air strikes. Ukrainian officials have said that prisoners-of-war at Olenivka were tortured. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62344358

Samsung’s second big event of 2022 is fast approaching, and to build hype the company has now launched an official trailer for the next Galaxy Unpacked, in which it shows off the designs of at least two phones, which from the look of them are almost certainly the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. While Samsung hasn’t mentioned these handsets by name, we’ve long been expecting to see them both at this event on August 10. However, previous teasers had focused specifically on a successor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, so seeing a new Z Fold here as well is reassuring. As for what to expect from these phones. Well, the video only shows brief glimpses of each, but various angles are shown, and some details can be made out. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 then (or at least the foldable flip phone believed to be named that), there appears to be two rear camera lenses, along with a flash. That’s in line with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, and so is the two-tone design on the rear, and the arrangement of ports, buttons, and antenna lines from what we can see here. Glimpses of the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold are more fleeting, but this too looks very similar to its predecessor from what we can see. None of which is surprising, since leaks had suggested as much. Beyond the imagery, this trailer also includes some text that hints at possible improvements. There’s mention of new ways to work and play, new ways to capture life, and new experiences that will forever change our behavior. Some of that is fairly vague and could just be highlighting the advantages that foldables have over flat phones, but the bit about capturing life is likely a hint at camera upgrades, especially as it’s followed by an image of the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s lenses. The mention of new ways to work and play meanwhile could be a hint at the rumored S Pen slot in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. We should find out for sure on August 10. Analysis: more than just foldables While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are likely to be the stars of Samsung’s August 10 event, they’re not the only things we’re expecting to see, with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro also likely to make an appearance. These are expected to be top-end wearables with worryingly high prices but big upgrades to battery life. We may also see other gadgets, such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro – though at least one source reckons they’ll land before August 10. Either way, this looks set to be a packed event, and a big deal for Samsung fans. TechRadar will be covering the launch in full, so make a note in your calendar to head back here then for all the news on what could be some of the best foldable phones and best smartwatches. Nvidia is projected to release three high-end GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards based on the Ada Lovelace architecture later this year targeting demanding gamers. But apparently Team Green is also prepping a rather monstrous graphics board based on its top-of-the-range AD102 GPU that will carry 48GB of memory with a typical board power of 800W, clearly gunning for the top of the GPU benchmarks hierarchy and the fastest of the best graphics cards. Hardware leaker @Kopite7kimi dubbed Nvidia's flagship GeForce RTX 40-series graphics card 'The Beast' without attributing a model name to it, but normally Nvidia would call it GeForce RTX 4090 Ti or Titan. This board is said to carry a GPU with 18,176 CUDA cores (up from 16,384 CUDA cores in case of the GeForce RTX 4090) as well as 48GB of GDDR6X memory featuring a 24 GT/s data transfer rate (up from 24GB of memory at 21 GT/s in case of the RTX 4090). Considering the higher number of CUDA cores, additional memory, and substantially higher TBP, the alleged GeForce RTX 4090 Ti should be significantly faster than the alleged non-Ti variant, particularly in high resolutions with high detail settings. Meanwhile, the beasty card is said to feature a TBP of 800W and will need an extremely capable power supply unit as well as a sophisticated cooling system. The rather extreme thermals of the monstrous Ada Lovelace card might cause consternation among ProViz professionals that work with highly detailed 3D models that can actually benefit from 48GB of GDDR6X memory onboard. Cooling an 800W card would inevitably mean more fans and higher fan speeds, neither of which are pleasant in a professional environment (outside of the data center). What remains to be seen is how much will Nvidia charge for its 'Beast' graphics board with 48GB of memory. A fully-fledged AD102 chip is projected to cost a lot, and 48GB of GDDR6X memory should carry an extreme price tag too. Given the rumored specs, we expect Nvidia's alleged GeForce RTX 4090 Ti board will feature an MSRP above $2000, the price of the outgoing GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. By way of comparison, even if Nvidia keeps clock speeds relatively consistent between generations, RTX 4090 Ti could have over 70% more computational power than the RTX 3090 Ti. Memory bandwidth meanwhile may only be 14% higher, so Nvidia would need improved caching or memory compression technologies to scale performance. Regardless, it looks like a massive bump in performance — and power use. Nvidia has not yet formally announced its GeForce RTX 40-series graphics boards, so consider everything detailed here as rumors and speculation. This is certainly not the first nor the last time we'll hear some juicy rumors about Nvidia's upcoming Ada Lovelace solutions. The real question: What will it punish more, your wallet or your home circuits? Link : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-reportedly-readies-800w-rtx-4090-ti-graphics-card

The first of Gordon Murray’s two forthcoming all-electric SUVs – a supermini-sized model due to surface as a prototype at the beginning of 2024 – will have a designed-in kerb weight of just 1100-1200kg, Autocar has learned. As such, it will undercut the similarly sized Renault Zoe by 300-400kg. New details of the supermini-sized SUV were revealed exclusively to Autocar by the newly appointed CEO of the Gordon Murray Group, Philip Lee. In future, Murray’s business will consist of Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), which designs and builds high-value, low-volume cars such as the Gordon Murray T50 and Gordon Murray T33, and Gordon Murray Technology (GMT), which will be a repository for the group’s store of technical knowledge and a car creation hub capable of taking clients’ projects from sketches to fully driving cars. Both of the new SUVs are GMT projects, built to utilise two of the group’s three highly flexible ‘Superlight’ platforms – Sports Car, Mid-range and Large. According to Lee, they take their themes from Murray’s pioneering iStream manufacturing process, which minimises ‘stamped steel’ components in cars to promote flexibility and cut costs. The small SUV, which the Murray group will complete at its own cost to showcase its technical capabilities, will be carefully packaged as a generous four-seater-plus-luggage vehicle. One key to the SUVs’ market-leading lightness is believed to be a new ‘immersive’ fluid cooling technique used for their batteries, which are mounted in a rigid i-Case that allows battery maintenance access but still forms part of the car’s structure. This allows them to be more power dense and better able to handle extremes of temperature. The group is in the process of moving its HQ and its design and engineering organisations to a larger, recently purchased estate at Windlesham, Surrey. It also recently opened a base near Coventry, which it will soon expand, and has plans for two US outposts, mostly to handle GMA’s supercar activity. Controlling so much new activity is all part of the remit of Lee, who has vast global experience of automotive start-up operations and has nursed a number through their initial growth periods. He came to Murray’s notice as an important player in Geely’s acquisition of Lotus. “I have boundless respect for Gordon,” said Lee. “Working with him is a dream job. I’m no engineer and, in any case, you’d never better him on technical subjects. That just can’t be done. My job is to give the group the strongest possible foundation – from which it can focus completely on product, which is what Gordon wants.” Link : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-suvs-lead-gordon-murray-group-push

Almost one million people in a suburb of Wuhan - China's central city where the coronavirus was first recorded - have been placed under lockdown. Jiangxia district residents have been ordered to stay inside their homes or compounds for three days after four asymptomatic Covid cases were detected. China follows a "zero Covid" strategy, including mass testing, strict isolation rules and local lockdowns. This has resulted in far fewer deaths than in many other countries. But the strategy is facing growing opposition as people and businesses continue to face the strain of restrictions. In Wuhan, a city of 12 million people, regular testing uncovered two asymptomatic cases two days ago. Two more cases were found through contact tracing, and shortly after the lockdown order was issued. Wuhan became known around the world in early 2020 as the first place scientists detected the new coronavirus - and the first city to be put under harsh restrictive measures. At the time, the wider world was shocked by the strict lockdown, but many cities and countries were soon forced to impose their own similar measures. Later, China became known as a Covid success story, with restrictions lifted much earlier than in many other countries. But that has changed again, with China pursuing a "zero Covid" strategy resulting in frequent local lockdowns, rather than trying to live with the virus as in most other countries. Zero Covid dominates life in China. Travel decisions, sport choices, the timing of a day's activities and, in some cases, even the ability to find work are all dependant on Covid. The rest of the world may have moved on, but in China it's testing, scanning, showing scans, more testing, scanning again, planning for the next test etc etc. One day this may end but right now there is not the slightest hint that it's just around the corner. The threat of being locked down or being denied permission to leave a city constantly hangs over the entire po[CENSORED]tion. In the cities which have had the longest, most strict lockdowns there is fatigue over the Covid threat. For the tens of millions of people living in places like Jilin City, Changchun, Xi'an and Shanghai, the idea of being ordered to stay at home again for months at a time seems unbearable. China's zero Covid approach has prevented hospitals from being swamped by infected patients and it has kept death rates much lower that they would have been otherwise - but, at some point, China will have to find a way to move forward. If it doesn't, the economy will sink. Most importantly, there is the Communist Party Congress to get through in autumn, and the country's low vaccination rates have to be improved, especially among older people. It is the only way out. Presentational grey line Last month, Shanghai - China's giant financial capital with nearly 25 million residents - finally emerged from a strict two-month lockdown, though residents are adapting to a "new normal" of frequent mass testing. A rising number of Chinese companies and factory production lines are maintaining a closed-loop system in order to follow the goal of completely eliminating Covid. In order to keep parts of the economy open, employees have been told to live temporarily in their workplaces to minimise contact between work and home. Zero Covid holds danger for China's Xi Covid origin studies say evidence points to market Earlier this week, scientists said there was "compelling evidence" that Wuhan's Huanan seafood and wildlife market was at the centre of the Covid outbreak. Two peer-reviewed studies re-examined information from the initial outbreak in the city. One of the studies shows that the earliest known cases were clustered around that market. The other uses genetic information to track the timing of the outbreak. It suggests there were two variants introduced into humans in November or early December 2019. Together, the researchers said this evidence suggests that the virus was present in live mammals that were sold at Huanan market in late 2019. They said it was transmitted to people who were working or shopping there in two separate "spill-over events", where a human contracted the virus from an animal. One of the researchers involved, virologist Prof David Robertson from the University of Glasgow, told BBC News that he hoped the studies would "correct the false record that the virus came from a lab". China has seen more than 2.2 million cases and 14,720 deaths since the pandemic began in 2019, according to America's Johns Hopkins University. Google has finally rolled out the immersive Google Maps views it promised back in May, along with a few other helpful features for cyclists, and travelers in groups. First announced at the Google I/O 2022 developer conference, immersive views will combine Google Map’s Street View, satellite, and aerial images to create 3D recreations of landmarks. This first iteration of the feature is currently incomplete, but still supports over 100 locations across major cities including London, San Francisco and Tokyo. Eventually, the feature will go beyond traditional landmarks, and will be used to bring to life local hotspots like restaurants, to give potential tourists a better feel of the place they’re looking to visit. With Instagram itself capitalizing on this trend with its own searchable maps feature, we’ll have to see whether Google Maps’ immersive views and other future features will be enough to win back lost users. Google Maps is also getting better navigation tools for cyclists. While Maps has offered bike navigation for a long time now, this update aims to make it more like its car navigation, giving cyclists more information about their route. Specifically, it means that cyclists will be able to see if their route is impacted by car traffic, as well as if the route includes bike lanes, how steep or windy a route is, and what kind of roads they’ll be riding on. Users can use this information to choose alternative paths; in some cases, Google Maps will offer riders multiple possible routes other than the fastest, including a path with more bike lanes, or one that requires fewer turns. Google is also upgrading location sharing. Now, in addition to sharing your location, you can ping notifications to a friend to let them know you’re leaving one location, and automatically send another when you arrive at your destination. The app will also be better at warning you that you’ve left the feature turned on if you didn’t set a time limit when you started sharing your location. https://www.techradar.com/news/the-latest-google-maps-update-immerses-you-in-tourist-hotspots

The Mini Aceman concept will evolve into a new compact electric crossover at the end of 2024 to fill the gap between the flagship Mini hatch and the mid-sized Mini Countryman. It uses a stretched version of the all-new Spotlight architecture that is being developed jointly by BMW and Chinese partner firm Great Wall and will form the basis for the next-generation electric Mini hatchback. Mini has not given any clues to the likely battery sizes or potential range of the final production version of the Aceman. However, the Spotlight-based EV hatchback will come as a 181bhp Cooper with an approximately 40kWh battery and a 221bhp Cooper S with a 50kWh pack, giving a range of around 250 miles, so the production Aceman will be broadly similar. Sources emphasise that this concept is not intended as a Countryman replacement. That model will be reborn in a third generation as a larger car with a bigger boot and be twinned with the next-generation BMW X1. The Aceman is shorter than today’s Countryman, at 4050mm long, 1990mm wide and 1590mm tall. However, the Aceman could be seen as an indirect replacement for the Mini Clubman, which, Autocar understands, will be phased out in the middle of 2023. Sources say the departure of the Clubman will be marked by at least one special edition, recalling the original Clubman estate’s trademark side graphics. The five-door Mini hatch is also not set to get an electric successor. The Aceman concept is the result “of a lot of research and feedback”, Mini design chief Oliver Heilmer told Autocar. “The owners of the Mini hatch and Countryman are very happy, but they are very different people,” he said, hinting that the Aceman will target a demographic that has never owned a Mini. “This is classic Mini in the sense of the very short front and rear overhangs, but we have a very different side elevation. There is much more muscle in the sides.” The clean, almost fuselage-like sides have been replaced by surfaces that are more clearly stamped and industrial. BMW said: “This ‘edginess’ signifies a progressive interpretation of the robustness and versatility characteristic of a crossover model.” Also gone are the prominent chrome door handles and the triangular panel between the front wheel arch and front door. Heilmer’s team has reduced the Aceman’s front-end design to a bare minimum. The Mini’s large, chrome-rimmed headlights have been greatly reduced visually and the brand’s traditional ‘face’ is now defined by an LED outline. The Mini grille has donated its outside edge as a very minimalist reminder of the brand’s roots. “This car feels robust, but it is not huge. The new Countryman will have more boot space,” said Heilmer. “The shoulder on the car is a result of the aerodynamic performance needed for an electric vehicle. “The tailgate spoiler and the way the rear of the glasshouse narrows was also driven by aerodynamics, as was the wheel design.” https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mini-aceman-ev-concept-brings-bold-design-and-range-shake

Image The US Justice Department is examining Donald Trump's actions in connection with efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, say US media. Federal prosecutors have reportedly asked witnesses directly about the behaviour of the former US president. So far, they have chosen not to open a formal criminal investigation into Mr Trump himself. Rioters stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 in an effort to overturn the president's election defeat. No former US president has ever been indicted for criminal conduct. The Justice Department already has a criminal investigation into what happened on 6 January. The reports that witnesses are being questioned about Mr Trump's role does not mean that federal prosecutors will decide to pursue criminal charges against him. The investigation is separate to the high-profile, televised Congressional hearings that have taken place over the past few weeks on the same subject - which Mr Trump has characterised as a political witch hunt. According to a report in the Washington Post, federal prosecutors questioned witnesses before a grand jury about their conversations with Mr Trump and his inner circle in the months leading up to the 6 January riot. The witnesses were reportedly asked about instructions given by Mr Trump in connection to any attempts to prevent President Joe Biden's election victory from being certified by Congress. Some of those questioned included senior members of former Vice President Mike Pence's staff, multiple US outlets report. Until now the Justice Department has refused to say whether or not it would weigh charges against Mr Trump for any alleged role in trying to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. When the department's top official, Attorney General Merrick Garland, was asked on Tuesday whether he was concerned about indicting a former president - he simply responded that he intends to hold "everyone" accountable. Federal officials would prosecute anyone "criminally responsible for interfering with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another," Mr Garland told NBC News. The Justice Department's probe into what happened on 6 January 2021, he said, is the "most wide-ranging investigation its history". Any decision by federal prosecutors to bring charges against a former president - and potential candidate in the 2024 election - would have significant constitutional and political consequences. What happened on 6 January at the Capitol riot? Five big questions about Trump and the riot The rioters pictured in five defining images In addition to federal prosecutors, a powerful US congressional committee has also been holding its own separate investigation into the armed storming of the Capitol building. The congressional committee, made up of five Democrats and two Republicans, called dozens of witnesses last week in an attempt to build a case that Mr Trump launched an illegal bid to overturn his defeat by Mr Biden in the 2020 presidential election - culminating in the riot. Some of the most explosive testimony delivered at the televised hearings came from Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Appearing as a surprise witness during the sixth hearings, Ms Hutchinson said Mr Trump personally knew that members of the crowd at his morning rally near the White House were armed because they were being turned away by Secret Service officers. "I don't [expletive] care that they have weapons. They're not here to hurt me," Ms Hutchinson said she heard the president say. "Let my people in. They can march to the Capitol from here." Her testimony offered the committee something they had been seeking to establish from the very beginning of proceedings - that Mr Trump allegedly knew there was a very real threat of violence and did nothing to stop it. Its panel of members of Congress has suggested there might be enough evidence to bring criminal charges against Mr Trump, but it does not itself have the power to do that. Any suggestion that the Justice Department could be looking into the former president's personal role is there fore significant. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62314306

The next Audi A3 is set to become an electric-only model with a maximum range of more than 400 miles and the choice of either standard rear- or optional four-wheel drive, sources at the car maker have revealed. The decision means the po[CENSORED]r hatchback and saloon will abandon petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and natural gas power to go up against the Volkswagen ID 3 with a raft of battery and powertrain options and next-generation technology. Scheduled for UK launch in 2027, the fifth-generation A3 will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s new skateboard-style SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) electric architecture – the same structure that is set to make its debut on the upcoming Volkswagen ID 4 saloon (pictured below) currently being developed under the internal working title Project Trinity. It will also underpin an Audi sibling model known as Apollon. The move comes after Audi rejected a proposal to develop a new entry-level electric model on the existing MEB platform, which is used by the Audi Q4 E-tron and closely related Volkswagen ID 4 and Skoda Enyaq iV. The switch to electric power means standard versions of the A3 will abandon front-wheel drive for the first time since the model’s introduction in 1996, though the most potent models are tipped to adopt a twin-motor, four-wheel-drive set-up reminiscent of the current Audi Sport-fettled A3 variants: the Audi S3 and Audi RS3. These are comfortably the best-selling cars in Ingolstadt’s performance line-up, with 753 RS3s and 442 S3s sold last month in the UK alone. An electric RS3 will be the entry point into the newly electrified performance line-up, being sold alongside rapid and outlandishly styled sporting variants of the upcoming electric Audi A4 and Audi A6 successors. Audi Sport’s transition to an electrified portfolio has kicked off with range-topping variants of the Audi E-tron SUV and Audi E-tron GT saloon, and it is expected to ultimately match the diversity and scope of its current performance range, which comprises highly strung variants of most Audi models. Instant-torque electric power will see the ‘RS3 E-tron’ outpace the current five-cylinder petrol car in a straight line – so expect a sub-3.8sec 0-62mph time, and the innovative torque-vectoring functionality fitted to Audi’s existing fast EVs will no doubt trickle down to upcoming entrants to mimic the combustion car’s dynamic agility. It could also be the first of a breed, with rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen yet to unwrap electrification plans for their own hottest hatchbacks. The A3 line’s electrification aligns with recent comments by Audi CEO Markus Duesmann that all new Audi models will be exclusively electric from 2026. Speaking to German magazine Wirtschaftswoche, Duesmann explained how this switch will be underpinned. “In our current ICE portfolio, we are using three different architectures, and our BEV [battery-electric vehicle] offer is already based on two different architectures: the MEB and PPE [Premium Platform Electric]. In the second half of this decade, we will introduce the SSP to form one strong mechatronic platform,” said Duesmann, who is also R&D boss of the Volkswagen Group. Among the advantages offered by the new SSP architecture over today’s MEB structure are a lower floor height and greater modularity for increased differentiation between models. The SSP platform is also designed to support a new 800V electric architecture. This will offer significantly faster charging times than the 400V system of existing MEB-based models and enable speeds of up to 270kW, which is good for an 80-mile top-up in 10 minutes. Duesmann said the SSP architecture will use what he calls a “unified cell format” and offer a range of up to 435 miles. Although the SSP platform is being developed to accept solid-state batteries, they are not planned to be offered with the next A3. Autocar has been told that the next A3 has been conceived as a five-door hatchback and four-door saloon, both with incremental increases in dimensions. Those privy to early design proposals say Audi designers have taken full advantage of the packaging solutions offered by the dedicated SSP platform, providing the A3 with altered proportions, including shorter overhangs, a shorter bonnet line, a longer cabin and larger wheelhouses. Ukraine has accused Moscow of waging a "gas war" against Europe and cutting supplies to inflict "terror" on people. Russian energy firm Gazprom announced it is once again reducing gas flows into Germany to allow work on a turbine on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. But Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said this was simply "gas blackmail" against Europe. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which pumps gas from Russia to Germany, has been running well below capacity for weeks. Earlier this month, Russia's biggest European pipeline was completely shut down for a 10-day maintenance break, sparking fears in Europe that shipments would not resume at all. Shipments did restart five days ago - albeit still at a reduced capacity. But on Monday, Gazprom announced it would be cutting its gas supply further once again. The EU, which received 40% of its gas from Russia last year, has also accused Russia of using energy as a weapon. The latest reduction in flows puts pressure on EU countries to reduce their dependence on Russian gas even further, and will likely make it more difficult for them to replenish their gas supplies ahead of winter. European energy ministers are meeting in Brussels on Tuesday where they hope to sign off on a joint response to the crisis. Last week, the European Commission proposed member states cut gas consumption by 15% over the next seven months. The target would be voluntary, but under the proposals the Commission could decide to make it mandatory in an emergency. Although some countries have resisted the plan, the pressure on EU capitals to reach an agreement is high. Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, has previously said the prospect of Russia completely cutting off gas supplies to the EU was a "likely scenario". Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February the price of wholesale gas has already soared, with a knock-on impact on consumer energy bills across the globe. The Kremlin blames the price hike on Western sanctions, insisting it is a reliable energy partner and not responsible for the recent disruption to gas supplies. Can the world cope without Russian oil and gas? No faith in Russia, Germany scrambles for energy Russian gas boss says 'our product, our rules' Meanwhile, Ukraine still hopes that a landmark deal brokered by the UN last week could mean grain exports resume from its Black Sea ports "within days." "If the sides guarantee security, the agreement will work. If they do not, it will not work," Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said. In his nightly address, President Zelensky also said he was confident that grain exports from Ukraine will start again this week. His comments came after fears the deal could fall apart after Russia targeted Ukraine's main port of Odesa with missiles on Saturday. As many as 20 million tonnes of grain are trapped in Ukraine, unable to leave because the Russian navy controls most of the Black Sea. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62300684

Imagine an electric car that would allow you to get from the centre of London to the car park at the UK’s northernmost point at Dunnet Head, near John o’ Groats, on a single battery charge – almost 700 miles – with absolutely no compromise in speed, comfort or, most important of all, driving enjoyment. Not possible? One manufacturer is convinced it is and that's why the Mercedes Vision EQXX concept is here to prove it. The rear-wheel-drive saloon acts as a showcase for the sort of electric driveline technology, aerodynamic developments and lightweight construction Mercedes says it is pursuing for future production models. Unlike most concepts, it is fully road legal. Officially, the new four-door is claimed to achieve 7.5 miles per kWh – twice as efficient as the recently introduced Mercedes EQE 350. With a specially constructed 100kWh battery integrated into its flat floor, this gives it a theoretical range of over 700 miles. By comparison, the rear-drive EQE 350 with a 90.6kWh battery has a claimed range of 410 miles. The 900V unit features the latest lithium ion cells from CATL. They use a silicon anode and are claimed to provide an energy density of up to 400Wh per litre, making them far more energy efficient than the cells used in the batteries fitted to existing EQ electric models. It is also claimed to be 50% smaller and 30% lighter than today’s batteries. Mercedes has already shown the potential of the Vision EQXX in two development drives, the latest of which was from Stuttgart to Goodwood, a distance of 747 miles, without the need for recharging. However, this was achieved by a team of highly trained test drivers with real-time access to all the information thrown up by a boot full of data loggers and in constant radio contact with engineers back at Mercedes’ base in Germany. Nevertheless, so confident is Mercedes in the Vision EQXX’s ability to hit lofty efficiency targets with any driver at the wheel that it has just thrown me the key and told me to go for a drive to find out for myself just what is possible. Not just a low-speed tootle up the road and back, either, but a proper run along a series of undulating roads in and around its sprawling Immendingen R&D facility. It is the second time we’ve stepped aboard the low-slug four-seater, the first having come as a passenger ride in April. But before I slide into the driver’s seat and hit the start button, a quick recap of what’s underneath its distinctive teardrop-shaped body, which with various active spoilers, including a complex multi-piece diffuser that motors out from the lower edge of the rear bumper at speed, achieves a record-breaking drag coefficient of 0.17. The starting point for the Vision EQXX was a Mercedes EQB prototype mule known as Emma (see separate story, right). Constructed last year, it was used to test the packaging and durability of the concept’s high-tech driveline and the various software that allows it to achieve such outstanding economy figures. The car itself is largely bespoke, including the platform, which has a distant relationship to the MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) used for cars such as the EQC saloon that will reach the UK around 2025. At 4977mm long, 1870mm wide and just 1350mm tall, the Vision EQXX is 226mm longer, 50mm wider and 105mm lower than today’s C-Class. Its wheelbase is 40mm shorter, at 2800mm. With a high-strength steel body structure, carbonfibre doors and aluminium brake discs among other weight-saving measures, it also weighs only 1755kg, which has allowed Mercedes to fit just one motor.
