Donald Trump falsely insisting that the 2020 election was “rigged” last week was nothing new for the Republican Party’s presidential frontrunner. But by elevating the issue in his CNN town hall, he was also putting enormous pressure on his chief rival in the primary, Ron DeSantis. The Florida governor — who caught a break in Iowa over the weekend when severe weather kept Trump away from counter-programming his trip to the state — is seeking to persuade Republicans he’s their only hope of defeating President Joe Biden. But implicit in DeSantis’ argument that he is a more electable alternative to Trump is the idea that Trump actually lost. The fundamental problem for DeSantis — underscored even by blunter messaging from the super PAC supporting him — is that he can’t bring himself to say it. “First question at first debate: Raise your hand if you think Trump won the 2020 election,” said Republican consultant Alex Conant, who worked on Sen. Marco Rubio’s 2016 presidential race and is unaffiliated in the 2024 campaign. “If a candidate can’t dispose of a fake issue like who won the election, how can voters expect them to handle the real issues?” https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/15/trump-2020-election-desantis-bind-00096852 He added, “You need to respect Trump’s voters, but that doesn’t mean lying to them.” In private dinners recently, DeSantis has told fundraisers he stands a better chance than Trump of winning key states like Georgia and Arizona that Trump lost in 2020, according to one person who was briefed on the private meetings and was granted anonymity to share the details. Both states became hotbeds of Trump’s election conspiracy claims, and in Georgia, Trump’s baseless accusations about rigged elections were widely viewed as depressing GOP turnout in two critical Senate runoff elections, contributing to Republicans’ loss of their Senate majority. For a Republican Party still agonizing over the loss of the White House in 2020 and a less-than-red-wave midterm, DeSantis in Iowa on Saturday cast himself — without naming Trump — as a more viable standard-bearer. “As Republicans, we’ve underperformed in elections for many, many years now. So there is a reason to be pessimistic,” he told a crowd at an event in Sioux Center, where he reminded first-in-the-nation caucus goers of his landslide victory last year in what was once a swing state. “But I’ll tell ya: Iowa and Florida should be a source for hope.” Yet DeSantis himself has refused to say whether he thinks the 2020 election was rigged, dodging or deflecting questions about the outcome or complaining that he’s been asked about it “a hundred different times.” He campaigned in the midterms for candidates who disputed the results of the race, including Doug Mastriano and Kari Lake — two leading election deniers who lost gubernatorial races in the swing states of Pennsylvania and Arizona, respectively. When asked about Trump’s voter fraud claims, he has pivoted to touting his support for election law reforms in Florida. For DeSantis, it’s a high-wire act: Keep Trump diehards happy enough to consider supporting him, while convincing Republicans who are desperate to move on from Trump that he will not perpetuate the ex-president’s fixation on the past. But it’s unlikely he will be able to avoid the subject for long, with primary debates on the horizon and Trump not only relitigating 2020, but also refusing to pledge to accept the results of the 2024 election. DeSantis will join the contest lagging behind Trump in the polls and in a bind of his opponent’s making — competing in a primary in which survey after survey shows a majority of Republicans still believe, falsely, that the 2020 election was rigged. “He’s going to be boxed in by the fact that he’s basically making an electability pitch,” said Sarah Longwell, the Republican political strategist and Bulwark publisher who became a vocal supporter of Biden in 2020 and regularly conducts focus groups of Republicans. “And the trouble with the electability pitch is you’ve got to say, ‘Donald Trump lost and I can win.’” MOST READ senate-democrats-50915.jpg Possibility of ‘po[CENSORED]r revolt’ about gun control, Sen. Chris Murphy says The Religious Landscape is Undergoing Massive Change. It Could Decide the 2024 Election. How the Supreme Court might view the debt limit fight 5 things that went well for DeSantis in Iowa on Saturday Ron — not Don — and an act of God descend on Iowa That’s a calculation DeSantis’ biggest, well-funded allies — if not the candidate-in-waiting himself — appear to have made. The super PAC Never Back Down — founded by former Trump official Ken Cuccinelli, and operating alongside DeSantis’ team — has declared Trump’s 2020 election loss in messages to supporters. “We need a proven leader with a proven record against the Woke Agenda. We need a candidate who can beat Joe Biden, not one who failed to do so already,” the PAC wrote in a blast text message last month. A DeSantis spokesperson declined to comment on his position on the issue. DeSantis is well aware of the risk of alienating Trump supporters. In prep sessions for debates during his 2018 gubernatorial campaign, he grappled with a question about whether he disagrees with Trump on any issue, saying “obviously there is” but that he has to “frame it in a way that’s not going to piss off all his voters,” according to footage obtained by ABC News. Many Republicans who publicly disavowed Trump’s election lies were punished in last year’s primaries, and few GOP strategists see upside in focusing on the issue. “Beyond the fact that he’s not going to say something he doesn’t believe, he wants to remain open to the maybe Trump voters who recognize that the election was not stolen,” Republican pollster Whit Ayres said. Saul Anuzis, a former Michigan Republican Party chair who is neutral in the race but spoke positively about DeSantis, called it “one of those inconvenient circumstances that’s going to force you to respond to something that most people don’t think is an important issue.” But he wasn’t betting on DeSantis ever answering the question directly. “Any good candidate knows how to pivot from a lousy question,” Anuzis said. “And that will be DeSantis’ strategy, as well as everybody else’s.” https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/15/trump-2020-election-desantis-bind-00096852

Herders have become more protective after losing livestock to a drought that has been termed as the worst in decades in the East Africa region. One of Kenya’s oldest wild lions was killed by herders and the government has expressed concern as six more lions were speared at another village on Saturday, bringing to 10 the number killed last week alone. The male lion named Loonkiito was 19 years old and was described as frail by Kenya Wildlife Service spokesperson Paul Jinaro, who said it wandered out of the Amboseli national park into a village in search of food on Thursday night. Six other lions from the same national park were speared by herders after they killed 11 goats in Mbirikani area, Kajiado county. The deaths brought to 10 the number of lions killed by herders last week in escalated human-wildlife conflict that has worried the government. Tourism minister Peninah Malonza met locals in Mbirikani area on Sunday and urged them not to spear wandering lions and to instead reach out to the wildlife service. The government and conservation groups have a compensation program for herders whose livestock is killed by wild animals. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/herders-kenya-kill-10-lions-countrys-oldest-rcna84389

The British firm has registered 3 new names in the United States: Adventurer, Hurricane and Street Tracker. The future machines of the Triumph-Bajaj alliance? Triumph, known for its medium and large displacement motorcycles, wants to explore other horizons: the electric motorcycle with the Triumph TE-1 , motocross and neo-retro small and medium displacement in collaboration with the Indian giant Bajaj . On this last point, leaks and stolen photos are on the net, to the point of imagining that the fruits of this alliance will be presented shortly. Triumph Adventurer, Hurricane and Street Tracker The names recently registered in the United States - Adventurer, Hurricane and Street Tracker - would they designate the future Indo-British motorcycles ? Mystery ! Originally the Adventurer was a 900cc custom/cruiser marketed in the 90s until 2001. It was based on the Triumph Thunderbird of the same era. The X-75 Hurricane was also a cruiser - which has become legendary - produced in small quantities for the American market in the 1970s. As for the Street Tracker, can we imagine - at random - a "Flat Track" scrambler with the Triumph logo ? So many questions for so few answers. Although nothing is established yet, it is likely that these new denominations relate to future motorcycles of the Triumph-Bajaj alliance. They would thus distinguish themselves from the "premium" motorcycles of the firm, such as the Bonneville, Speed Twin and other Scramblers. In any case, if we consider the success of Royal Enfield, the return of BSA and the forthcoming arrival of Triumph, the battle promises to be tough in the segment of small and medium-sized Indian-English cars ! https://www.motomag.com/Triumph-preparerait-3-nouvelles-motos.html

PSG sends Ajaccio to Ligue 2, OM and Lens keep pace Paris Saint-Germain is now four points away from its 11th French championship title, after having beaten dryly (5-0) and sent Ajaccio to Ligue 2 on Saturday, in a Parc des Princes emptied of its ultras but which whistled Messi, especially at the start of the match. For its part, Olympique de Marseille won against Angers (3-1) and came back two points behind Lens, who won in pain against Reims (2-1). For the last European ticket, 5th place, which sends to the Conference League, Rennes (6th) came back to within a point of Lille by crushing Estac (4-0), which it sends to Ligue 2. Losc n' took only one point in Monaco (0-0) and Lyon gave up a lot of ground in fifth place, three points behind the Bretons and four from the Northerners, three days from the end. In the race to maintain, Brest won the direct confrontation against Auxerre (1-0) and gives itself some air. The Finisteriens join Strasbourg at 38 points, four lengths ahead of AJA (16th). The last place in the elevator should be played between Auxerre and Nantes, which occupies the relegation position. The "Canaries" took a point in Toulouse (0-0) and remain one point behind the Icaunais. The match started an hour and a half late due to the intervention of the security forces. The Stadium has been emptied while they inspect the stands. The Bayern / Borussia duel continues Bayern Munich continues to tremble but remains in control of its destiny. Much more convincing than in their last two successes, Bayern Munich corrected Schalke 6-0 on Saturday, but Borussia Dortmund remains in their rearview mirror thanks to their victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach (5-2). The two clubs are separated by only one point two days before the end of the championship. Thanks to two assists for Willi Orban and Dominik Szoboszlai, Frenchman Christopher Nkunku gave RB Leipzig victory in added time on Sunday against Werder Bremen (2-1), an extremely valuable success in the League race . champions . Thanks to this success, Leipzig remains on the Bundesliga podium, in third place with 60 points, one more than Union Berlin (59) and four more than Freiburg (56), two games from the end. of the season (six points to distribute). Leipzig travels to Munich on Saturday for the shock of the penultimate day, with the objective of sealing its qualification for the C1, while Bayern cannot afford the slightest misstep, under penalty of being under threat of the BVB. A pretty poster in perspective. Juve consolidate their second place Juventus Turin consolidated their second place and especially their chances of playing in the next Champions League by dominating Cremonese (2-0), Sunday evening during the 35th day of Serie A. Nicolo Fagioli with a good strike (55th ) then Gleison Bremer with a header (79th) tipped in favor of the Bianconeri an evening which had started with the new injury of Paul Pogba, replaced in the 24th minute for his first start in a season without respite. Juve consolidates its second place ahead of Inter Milan (3 points) but above all its place in the Top 4, qualifying for the next C1, by putting the fifth, AC Milan , at eight points. The Bianconeri are however still under threat of a penalty for alleged accounting fraud, but a priori less important than the withdrawal of 15 points received in January and then suspended in April. But they can now hope to stay in the top four, even with a new penalty. In front of Juve, the champion Naples had his head elsewhere in Monza (2-0 defeat), trapped by goals from Dany Mota (18th) and ex-Neapolitan Andrea Petagna (54th). In the battle for European places, Roma (6th) in turn let points slip away in Bologna (0-0), without succeeding in taking advantage of Lazio's draw (4th) on Friday against Lecce (2 -2) and the defeats of AC Milan (5th) against La Spezia (2-0) and Atalanta (7th) at Salernitana (1-0). After Arsenal's home defeat against Brighton (3-0) on Sunday, during the 36th day, Manchester City are only three points short of retaining their title of champion of England. With four points ahead, three games to play against only two for Arsenal and a largely favorable goal difference (+61 against +41), we no longer see how the Citizens could not secure a fifth coronation in six years and further cement their dominance over the Premier League. Next Sunday, against Chelsea , currently 11th, the men of Pep Guardiola will try to chain a 12th consecutive success in the league in a final sprint which they led with a beating beat. "Mathematically, it's still possible and that's football, but today it's impossible to think about the title," reacted Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta, disappointed, at the microphone of Sky Sports after the match. First in line during the day, City did the job seriously at Everton (3-0). Three days before their Champions League semi-final return against Real Madrid, the first twenty minutes of the Cityzens were a bit sluggish, but everything was unblocked thanks to a double and an assist from Ilkay Gündogan. The ball was then in the camp of Arsenal, which remained on a convincing victory in Newcastle (2-0), 3rd in the standings. But the Gunners' task was hardly less complicated against sixth-placed Brighton, a place that sends them to the Europa League next season, a step ahead of Tottenham and Aston Villa, who have played two more matches. At the top of the table for most of the season, the Gunners fell back into the difficulties observed during the air hole they suffered in April, when they had taken only three points in four days and suffered a correction at Manchester City (4-1). But the Londoners should not see this second place as a failure, as they have pushed City and its myriad of stars to their last entrenchments. FC Barcelona exults, Madrid battle for second place An eternity that comes to an end: four years after its last coronation in 2019, FC Barcelona has finally reconquered the Spanish throne for the 27th time in its history by winning in the Barcelona derby against Espanyol (2-4). This is the first major title for coach Xavi, who had so far only won a Spanish Super Cup since returning to the Blaugrana bench in November 2021. A triumph built with style: Barça dislodged Real Madrid from first place in the rankings just before the World Cup break in Qatar, then did not let go until the coronation. The "White House", second with fourteen points behind, can no longer catch up with its rival. On Sunday, Xavi's men could not count on a poor performance from Real (winner of Getafe 1-0 on Saturday), and therefore had to finish the job themselves. Barça folded the match from the start, with a first goal from the right knee signed Robert Lewandowski in the 11th minute after a discount from Alejandro Balde, who was then at the conclusion of a cross from Pedri at the far post ( 20th) to score his first goal in the colors of the Blaugrana first team. The Polish goleador, top scorer in La Liga, even offered himself a double in the 40th, and Jules Koundé also opened his counter at Barça in the 53rd, with a header, to seal the coronation. Espanyol saved the honor by Puado (73rd) then by Joselu in added time (90th +2). Out of respect for Espanyol, neighbor and historical rival of the Blaugranas who are fighting for maintenance, the trophy will only be awarded to Barça players next Saturday, when Real Sociedad is received at Camp Nou. Behind the Catalans, the battle for the place of dolphin rages between Real and Atletico Madrid. The success of the "White House" against Getafe allowed them to regain second position in the standings from the "Colchoneros", defeated by the red lantern Elche (1-0). https://www.france24.com/fr/sports/20230515-foot-européen-le-barça-champion-le-psg-et-manchester-city-s-en-approchent-suspense-en-allemagne

Bernadine Swale thought she couldn’t cope after her divorce. Now, she loves her life cycling around Florida with terriers and fine-dining with schnauzers in New Zealand hen Bernadine Swale’s marriage ended after 36 years, when she was 57, her first instinct – once she had recovered from the shock – was that she couldn’t manage alone. “The standard, cookie-cutter way you have to be in your 60s is man and woman, and you travel together,” she says. It took her a few years to realise: “Actually, no.” Now 68, Swale, a retired pharmacist, travels the world as a pet-sitter. Last year, she spent only 23 nights in her own bed, in a loft that looks out over downtown Denver. Pet-sitting stops have included London, New York, Athens, Botswana, Tokyo and New Zealand. “I absolutely love my life,” she says. “I have the best retirement there ever was.” Swale had always wanted to travel. She had grown up in Maun, Botswana, between the Okavango delta and the Kalahari desert, where her father was a doctor. The family moved to England when she was 10. She went to university in Yorkshire, where she met her future husband. After they married and had three children, they moved to the US for his work. “I was in my mid-30s and I’d already lived in three continents,” she says. “Life gets busy just raising your kids as best you can, giving them a stable base. You put all those travel wishes on the back burner. They are still there, but you bury them with everyday life, because that’s the best thing for your family.” When Swale was first divorced, “I couldn’t function; I couldn’t even talk”. But by the time she was 63, having had another serious relationship, she had reached a different understanding of herself: “I don’t need a man. That’s not what brings me the most joy in life.” She had continued to work and had kept the family home. “But it was just me rattling around in it. And work was increasingly pressured. I suddenly thought: ‘Why am I doing this?’ Then I had a brilliant plan.” The spousal maintenance she received was roughly the same as the social security she would receive when she retired. “So I thought: I’ll rent the house out for a year, do some pet-sitting and see if I can live on the alimony. And if I can, I don’t ever have to go back to work. I’m good from now on.” The first pet-sitting job was half an hour from home. “I loved animals. But I thought: you don’t know whose house you’re going into, what reception you’ll get, if the dog will bite you or the cat run away … I sat in the car for about 10 minutes, plucking up the courage to ring the doorbell.” But the sit was fine. Although the money was tight – there is no fee for pet-sitting, only free board – she “made it work”. “I thought: ‘I’m going all in now. I’m going all in.’ I sold the house. I got rid of everything.” She bought the loft because it was a “golden house” for listing on Airbnb when she wasn’t there. Now, Swale doesn’t stop to think. Some people want to meet her. Some leave a key under the mat. She has cycled around Sanibel Island in Florida with a terrier in her basket and taken a miniature schnauzer out for dinner in New Zealand. “Once you get over the initial fear, the freedom as a single person is fantastic.” In Botswana, some strange beasts came through the house, including a baby rhinoceros. On a recent pet-sit there, she visited the remains of her old home. Behind the house, by the river, her childhood came flooding back: “Getting stuck in the mud … tearing up the massive leaves of banana plants to make a hula skirt.” Her next stop is Florida, where she will look after a cat and three geckos. “So long as my health holds out, so long as I get joy out of it, I will keep doing it.” Doesn’t she miss having a fixed home? “The world is my home,” she says. “You’re living in their home, you’re walking in their neighbourhood, you have their pets, chat to their neighbours; you are living as if you live there. It’s like borrowing somebody else’s life for a minute. And I learn something from every sit I do.” https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/may/15/a-new-start-after-60-i-embraced-being-single-and-became-an-international-pet-sitter

A Chinese court has sentenced a 78-year-old US citizen to life in prison on spying charges. John Shing-Wan Leung, who is a permanent resident in Hong Kong, was jailed on Monday. The court in the south-eastern city of Suzhou gave no further details of the allegations against him. Leung was arrested in the city two years ago by a local bureau of China's counterintelligence agency, a news release from the court said. He "was found guilty of espionage, sentenced to life imprisonment [and] deprived of political rights for life", according to the statement from the Intermediate People's Court which was posted on the WeChat social media platform. It is unclear where Leung was living at the time of his arrest. A spokesperson for the US embassy in Beijing said they were aware of the reports. "The Department of State has no greater priority than the safety and security of US citizens overseas," they said. Closed door trials are common in China, and few details are usually made public for sensitive cases such as those involving espionage charges. In July, a new law will come into effect that broadens the scope of China's espionage legislation. It will ban the handing over of any data the authorities deem to be related to national security. The jailing is likely to further strain relations between China and the US, which deteriorated during former US President Donald Trump's administration after he launched a trade war against China in 2018. The two superpowers continue to clash on various issues, including Taiwan, China's militarisation of the South China Sea and the origins of Covid. Tensions were also heightened in February when the US shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon, which Beijing insisted was a weather monitoring device. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-65595221

WhatsApp has responded to the Indian Government's call to send notice to the Meta's messaging platform regarding an increase in international scam calls. Promising to safeguard user's privacy and security, WhatsApp says it provides options like 'Block' and 'Report' for users to avoid any unwanted calls or messages. It also ensured to have ramped up its AI and ML system, which is expected to bring down the current calling rate by at least 50 percent. "Our users are at the heart of everything we do and we are fully aligned with the Government's goal of keeping users safe. WhatsApp is a leader among end-to-end encrypted services in protecting user safety," stated WhatsApp spokesperson in response to report regarding IT Ministry's decision to send a notice. "We have quickly ramped up our AI & ML systems to bring down such incidents significantly. Our new enforcement will reduce the current calling rate by at least 50 percent and we expect to be able to control the current incidence effectively," the statement added. Earlier in the day, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the IT Ministry will send a notice to WhatsApp on the issue of spam calls from unknown international numbers, in order to ensure privacy of users on digital platforms. He added that all the digital platforms are responsible and accountable for ensuring the safety of 'digital nagriks'. Alleged misuse or alleged breach of users' privacy on any such platform will receive appropriate response from the. government. The incidence has come to light as WhatsApp users in India have reported to have received incoming international spam calls over the past few days. Users took it to Twitter to complain that these spam calls had country codes belonging to Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254) and Ethiopia (+251). Wix(opens in new tab) has decided to take its website building services a step further by opening its backend to work outside the Wix platform, with the launch of a new offering designed for developers. Wix Headless hopes to revolutionize the way developers use composable application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDK). The reportedly never-been-done-before offering allows developers to implement Wix’s business solutions with any tech stack across different platforms and devices. Wix Headless marks the first time the company is opening the backend to work outside the Wix platform. Website builder for developers Developers can use a variety of Wix Business Solutions that can all be accessed from the SDK and managed from within Wix’s management platform. The APIs can be used out of the box with Wix's additional solutions such as contacts and checkout. This means that web developers can create custom solutions that integrate with Wix even if their delivery layer, website or app is not on Wix. Other features of Wix Headless include multiple lines of business from one dashboard, the ability to connect additional sites or apps to existing projects on Wix, and the opportunity to take advantage of a global payments infrastructure. Through Wix’s providers platform, developers can also connect to payment providers located in South America, North America, and Europe, without integrating multiple payment gateways. "Wix Headless enables developers to use Wix in ways that weren't previously possible, from scaling their online presences to managing multiple complex projects in one place,“ said Shahar Talmi, GM Developer Platform at Wix. “We’re constantly advancing our business solutions on Wix, and by providing developers access to these APIs, with the ability to incorporate them into projects built on other platforms, we’re accelerating the endless possibilities presented in the web development industry.” Interestingly, the tool also lets web developers maximize the ways customers can interact with a business by connecting multiple clients to a single Wix back-end. For example, multiple websites, a mobile app, and a smartwatch app can all offer services on behalf of the same Wix backend business. Wix Headless opens the door for using Wix Business Solutions with web frameworks, including React, Vue, Svelte, Qwik, amongst others. The most efficient way to create a site is to use the best website builder service coupled with the best web hosting(opens in new tab) provider https://www.techradar.com/news/wix-is-opening-up-its-services-to-boost-websites-everywhere

Sabrent normally sells the Rocket 2230 1TB for $159.99. However, for a limited time, this small and fast SSD can be yours for just $109.99(opens in new tab), saving you a nice $50 off the regular price. Thus far, the discount only applies to purchases from Sabrent’s online store. Admittedly, there aren’t many M.2 2230 SSD options on the current market. Although the SSDs are used inside po[CENSORED]r devices, such as the ultrabooks or the Steam Deck, manufacturers haven’t given the form factor much attention. That doesn’t take away the fact that the Rocket 2230 is one of the best SSDs even if there’s little to no competition in the category. The Rocket 2230 1TB is the flagship SKU of Sabrent’s M.2 2230 lineup. Sadly, the vendor doesn’t offer a 2TB option, which would have been great since modern games are only getting bigger. The Rocket 2230 is a PCIe 4.0 SSD and delivers performance that does justice to its credentials. The tiny SSD offers sequential read and write speeds up to 4,750 MB/s and 4,300 MB/s, respectively. With performance figures like that, the Rocket 2230 is faster than the default drives in the Steam Deck and some of the OEM drives on the market. Performance isn’t the Rocket 2230’s only selling point. The SSD has been demonstrated to be extraordinarily power efficient in our tests. It’s an important aspect when choosing an M.2 2230 SSD since its primary target is mobile devices, like ultra-thin notebooks and handheld gaming consoles. The Rocket 2230 also has a generous warranty, which is another point in its favor. True, there are cheaper OEM options out there but those don’t typically come with a warranty. It’s a tremendous risk since the OEM can fail in a few weeks or months. Maybe you’ll get lucky, and it lasts for a few years. But it’s a lottery. The Rocket 2230, on the other hand, comes with a five-year warranty with registration. Valve doesn’t plan to release a Steam Deck 2 “for a few years”. But when the company does and if the new device retains the same form factor SSD, you’re already set with the Rocket 2230 1TB. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/get-dollar50-off-this-m2-2230-1tb-ssd-for-your-steam-deck

A few days before the opening of the World Hard Enduro season, Husqvarna presented the first images of the 2021 world champion's mount. A 300 TEi which foreshadows the future 2024 two-stroke enduro models. Shall we go around? New frame, swingarm, trim, tank, seat, everything is new. But always this sober and classic touch in the decor. Simple, effective... Obviously Billy Bolt's motorcycle receives WP Pro suspensions, specific triple trees, a seat cover, numerous protections (front disc, reinforced chain guide, etc.) which will not be on chain-extracted motorcycles. © HVA As with the 2023 cross two-strokes, the injection system behind the carbon cover should be the TBI, with injectors fixed in the Keihin injection body. And no longer in the cylinder. © HVA Dressing and tank kept a familiar line. But we are clearly on the 2024 pre-series, with series machines that will soon be presented to the press and in dealerships before the summer. © HVA After an empty season last year due to an injury, the Englishman Billy Bolt is going back to attacking the Hard Enduro world championship as the ultra favourite. © HVA Billy Bolt:“The 2023 season is going well for me so far. I ended the SuperEnduro season with another win, and even if that doesn't translate directly to hardenduro, it's still good to start the year dominating like that. I'm super excited to get back on the hard enduro scene now and show what I can do. I won the world title in 2021 and to be honest that was the last time I did the full championship. My 2022 season was cut short by injury so if anything it just gives me more motivation to get the win in 2023. I think when you've won a title in the past if you come into that championship with another objective than to win, then there is definitely something wrong. The bike for 2023 looks amazing and really suits my style. As soon as I jumped on it I felt comfortable and it's really good for my confidence ahead of the 2023 Hard Enduro World Championship. I also couldn't do what I do without such a strong team. around me. Every championship I've won is the result of a huge team effort. It's helped me get to where I am and even though there's a lot of hard work ahead this year, I think together we can get there and finish the season on top. » Every championship I've won is the result of a huge team effort. When Sen. Joe Manchin upbraided EPA on Wednesday for requiring power plants to reduce their carbon emissions, he didn’t mention that the agency’s rules could threaten his personal income. The West Virginia Democrat vowed to oppose President Joe Biden’s EPA nominees because the agency’s rules being proposed Thursday could push coal- and gas-fired power plants “out of existence,” he said. The risk to one plant, in particular, could jeapordize a lucrative source of money for Manchin. His family business Enersystems Inc. delivers waste coal to the Grant Town power plant, a financially struggling coal facility near Manchin’s hometown that he has spent much of his political career protecting. The Grant Town plant has repeatedly threatened to shut down. Now, with the release of EPA rules that are expected to push many power plants into installing expensive technology to capture their carbon emissions before the pollution escapes into the sky, the plant faces an increasingly troubled future. Many coal plants might shut down rather than comply with the stringent new climate rules. “This is going to make it harder for them to stay around. You won’t find written anywhere in the rule that this is supposed to be putting coal plants out of business, but just do the math,” said Brian Murray, director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University. Last year, Manchin earned $537,000 from Enersystems, according to financial disclosure records he filed with the Senate. He has been paid more than $5 million by the company since being elected to the Senate in 2010. The Grant Town plant is the main facility to receive coal from Manchin’s family business. Enersystems is now run by Manchin’s son, Joe Manchin IV. Spokespeople for Manchin and Grant Town did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Manchin, who faces a strong Republican challenger with deep connections to the coal industry in next year’s election, expressed outrage in a 221-word statement released Wednesday against the Biden administration’s “extreme ideology” for targeting fossil fuel carbon emissions. POLITICO’s Energy Summit on May 18 will discuss the new energy world order with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, White House national climate adviser Ali Zaidi, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, members of Congress and industry executives. Register here. “This Administration is determined to advance its radical climate agenda and has made it clear they are hellbent on doing everything in their power to regulate coal and gas-fueled power plants out of existence, no matter the cost to energy security and reliability,” Manchin said. The Grant Town plant generates 80 megawatts of power, making it one of the smaller plants in West Virginia and the only one that continues to burn waste coal, a mix of mud and minerals that is often found discarded near old mines. Waste coal is a high-carbon fuel. Environmental regulations have long threatened the Grant Town plant. In 2021, Richard Halloran, the president of the plant’s operator, Grant Town Holdings Corp., said in state testimony that he planned to use the facility to power cryptocurrency mining as a way to diversify its income stream. He noted that the plan, which he described as a financial lifeline for the struggling plant, carried inherent risks because of the freewheeling nature of cryptocurrency. “This will give us less protection against the anti fossil fuel (coal) sentiment and legislation and taxation, but we will try to fight this battle as hard as possible,” Halloran said. West Virginia, which still gets about 90 percent of its power from coal, is an outlier in the United States. Many states, including New York, have moved beyond coal entirely, replacing it with natural gas and renewables. A version of this report first ran in E&E News’ Climatewire. Animal rights campaigners are calling on the UK government to ban testing ingredients used for make-up on animals. Testing cosmetic products and ingredients on animals remains banned in the UK, the government insists. But the Home Office has issued licenses that allow testing of ingredients that might affect worker safety. The High Court said that the government was acting legally after a case was brought by animal rights activists. Animal tests for makeup ingredients allowed Which animals are used in UK experiments? Nars boycotts over China animal testing Testing on animals in the UK had only been allowed if the benefits gained from the research outweighed any animal suffering, for example for medicines. However, in 2020 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), an EU agency which oversees chemical regulation, ruled that companies needed to test some ingredients used in cosmetics on animals to ensure they were safe for workers manufacturing the ingredients. 'Regrettable' Last week it emerged that since 2019 the government has been issuing licences for animal testing of cosmetic ingredients in line with EU chemical rules, which it retained despite leaving the EU in 2020. It is not known how many such licences have been issued or to whom. The issuing of licences was revealed in a High Court case brought by animal rights campaigners. Mr Justice Linden ruled in favour of the government, saying that the licenses were not in conflict with the government's ban on cosmetics testing. But he said it was "regrettable" the public had not been informed about the change in policy. When asked if the government is restarting animal testing, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesperson said: "No absolutely not. The ban on using animals to test cosmetic products or ingredients for the consumer will remain completely in force and there are absolutely no plans to change that. "It also remains the case that it is unlawful for any business to sell cosmetic products or their ingredients that have been tested for the consumer on animals. "Any change in EU law on this will not impact our position and we will take the necessary steps to ensure this is the case. There will be no weakening on our position on animal testing." PM 'misinformed' In response, Campaign group Cruelty Free International said: "Unfortunately, the prime minister is misinformed about the government's position on animal testing for cosmetics. "A policy banning such tests was first introduced in 1998. However, in a letter to Cruelty Free International in August 2021, the Home Office admitted that the policy had 'changed' (i.e. been abandoned), to bring the UK into line with an EU ruling in a case called Symrise. "When Cruelty Free International challenged the new approach in a recent judicial review, the Home Office disclosed that it had been secretly granting licences to test for cosmetics since February 2019. "A High Court judge ruled that legally it was entitled to, based on his interpretation of EU general chemicals legislation known as REACH and its relationship with the EU Cosmetics Regulation." The campaign group added: "The government also said separately that the policy applied to worker safety testing. The prime minister's statement refers to tests 'for the consumer'. "Whether labelled as consumer or worker safety, the animal tests are identical. The government is now unquestionably once more allowing cosmetics testing on animals for the benefit of consumers." 'Horrified' The Body Shop, a global beauty company, has said they share the concerns of Cruelty Free International that the ban was effectively lifted. They are also calling on the government to reinstate the ban immediately. Dr Penny Hawkins, head of the RSPCA's animals in science department, said: "We've long been concerned about the UK government's decision to allow animal testing to satisfy chemical safety legislation even when a substance may go on to be used exclusively in a cosmetics product. "This is in conflict with the ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products or their ingredients. It also flies in the face of deeply-held and legitimate concerns about this use of animals, held by the RSPCA and the public - many of whom will be horrified that cosmetic ingredients could again be tested on animals. "The RSPCA wants to see a global commitment to replacing the use of animals in science, with an immediate end to the use of animal testing for consumer products." A new chemicals strategy is expected to be published this year outlining the government's position on the use and testing of chemicals in the UK - which may include further guidance to cosmetic companies. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65562354
