  2. Sri Lanka is facing its first debt default since its independence. On 12 April 2022, the Sri Lankan government announced that it will suspend all foreign debt repayments, except to multilateral development banks. It is now seeking a bail-out from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and needs to restructure nearly USD $30 billion of debt. To many, the default is the consequence of China’s ‘debt-trap diplomacy’. Sri Lanka, as the common wisdom goes, has already had to cede the port of Hambantota to China because it could not pay its debt. The Hambantota debt-trap “meme”, as Deborah Brautigam has called it, continues to circulate even among China experts, but it has long been debunked by Sri Lankan economists. The real picture of Sri Lanka’s debt distress is much more complicated. Hambantota: China’s ‘debt-trap diplomacy’? The term ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ was po[CENSORED]rized by the Indian geostrategist Brahma Chellaney. In a widely cited opinion piece, Chellaney argued that entrapping countries through oversized loans was “clearly part of China’s geostrategic vision”, and he accused China of designing projects in a way that makes it difficult for countries to repay their debt, forcing them to hand over strategic assets to China. The background to Chellenay’s allegation was that, in October 2016, Sri Lanka announced that it would hand over 80 per cent of the Hambantota Port to China Merchants Holding. Reuters reported that Sri Lanka would sell the stake “to cut the country’s debt burden”. According to Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, the money from the deal was to be used “to repay expensive foreign loans”. The port, however, was not ‘sold’ to China; as Sri Lankan newspapers reported, it was a lease for 99 years. Karunanayake’s statement, nonetheless, was (mis)interpreted as to mean that Sri Lanka had to cede the port because it could no longer pay its debt to China. The Hambantota debt-trap “meme”…continues to circulate even among China experts, but it has long been debunked by Sri Lankan economists. The debt-trap diplomacy narrative went viral. In May 2018, a Harvard graduate students’ policy analysis exercise paper for the US State Department named Hambantota a case of China’s “Debtbook Diplomacy”. The authors described it as an example of what the 2018 US National Defense Strategy had defined as “predatory economics”: China pursued a “coercive leveraging of debt to acquire strategic assets”. Several newspapers cited this as academic proof of China’s predatory lending. Paying the West However, as Sri Lankan economists subsequently pointed out, Sri Lanka’s repayment crisis had little to do with China. Certainly, the Hambatonta Port’s construction was economically a questionable undertaking, but the loans for its construction, obtained from China Eximbank in several instalments, were mostly on concessional terms, typically at fixed rates of 2 per cent, with other fees of 0.5 per cent and average maturity of 15-20 years. At the time of the lease, debt repayments for Hambantota amounted to only about 5 per cent of Sri Lanka’s total annual external debt, as repayment of some loans had not even begun. The largest portion of Sri Lanka’s foreign debt was international sovereign bonds (ISBs), commercial borrowings obtained from international capital markets since 2007. link:https://southasianvoices.org/why-sri-lankas-default-was-not-caused-by-china/
  3. It’s long been widely believed that dogs can detect extreme emotions by smell. Now scientists at Queen's University Belfast in the U.K. have proven that a dog's nose knows. Acute stress changes the compounds found in human sweat and breath, research has shown. For the new experiment, four dogs were presented with sweat and breath samples collected from human volunteers — before and after the people engaged in a difficult math exercise. The canine participants were able to detect with a greater than 90 percent accuracy which samples came from before and which came from after the 36 human volunteers had spent three minutes trying to count backward, aloud, from 9,000 in units of 17, according to the report published Wednesday in the scientific journal PLOS One. “This study provides further evidence of the extraordinary capabilities of ‘man’s best friend,’” said the study’s first author, animal psychologist Clara Wilson. While it is likely that in a real-life context dogs are picking up on our stress from a variety of context cues, we have shown using a laboratory study that there is a confirmed odor component that is likely contributing to dogs’ ability to sense when we are stressed,” Wilson said in an email. For their study, Wilson and her colleagues first set out to train a variety of 20 pet dogs to point with their noses at samples from a person who was stressed. (By the end of the training period, 16 dogs had been withdrawn for a variety of reasons, including attention issues and boredom.) The researchers tested the trained dogs with a machine that offered three choices: an unused piece of gauze, a sample from a stressed person and one from the same person when unstressed. link:https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/dogs-can-smell-stressed-new-study-shows-rcna49472
  4. Xiaomi has begun taking an active part in electric vehicle (EV) development as evident by the launch of SC-01 roadster. The EV is a creation of a Chinese automotive start-up backed by Xiaomi, called Xiaopaoche.SC-01 is a lightweight compact roadster with 435-horsepower (hp) dual-electric motors that can propel the car from 0-100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. The company hasn’t revealed the SC-01’s battery size, but its range is said to be around 500 km.SC-01 has received heaps of praises from enthusiasts for its small stature. Its exact dimensions are 4085/1820/1162 mm with a wheelbase of 2500 mm. Furthermore, it weighs only 1,300 kg, which is a lot lighter than most electric sedans. All these characteristics will likely make SC-01 a spiritual successor to the likes of Lotus Elise and Exige. According to reports, SC-01 will cost under 300,000 RMB (Rs. 9.5 million). The company has started taking bookings from consumers at 199 RMB (Rs. 6,400). International news outlets are calling it a “bargain sports EV”, which is far from the reality for Pakistanis thanks to crippling inflation and abysmal exchange ratesXiaopaoche will begin taking official orders for SC-01 in Q3 2023, while the deliveries will begin in Q4 2023. The SC-01 is an exciting EV that may catch the eye of several markets other than China. link:https://propakistani.pk/2022/09/29/xiaomis-sporty-electric-car-debuts-in-china/
  5. Umar Akmal (Urdu: عمر اکمل; born 26 May 1990) is a Pakistani cricketer who played for Pakistan national cricket team between 2009 and 2019. He has been banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board for eighteen months for not disclosing offers related to spot fixing.[1] Akmal made his One Day International (ODI) debut on 1 August 2009 against Sri Lanka, his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on 12 August 2009 against Sri Lanka, and made his Test debut against New Zealand on 23 November 2009. He is a right-handed batsman and a part-time spinner. Like his two brothers, Adnan and Kamran, Umar has kept wicket for the national team in many ODIs. Domestically, he played for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited for eleven years, before signing with United Bank Limited in August 2017.[2] He has also played in many franchise Twenty20 teams around the world. In February 2020, he was suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), after he had breached their Anti-Corruption code.[3][4] In April 2020, the PCB banned him from cricket for three years, after he pled guilty to failing to report corrupt approaches.[5] The following month, he lodged an appeal against his ban.[6] In July 2020, Akmal's ban was reduced to one-and-a-half years, with his suspension running from February 2020 to August 2021.[7] In August 2020, the PCB appealed the ban reduction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and Akmal appealed to the CAS to have his ban overturned.[8][9] In February 2021, the CAS reduced the ban to 12 months and imposed a PKR 4.25 million (27,000 USD) fine on Akmal.[10] In July 2021, Akmal apologised for not reporting corrupt approaches last year, which led to him being banned for 12 months.[11] He then left Pakistan to sign a short-term contract with the Northern California Cricket Association in the United States.[12]Personal life Born to Mohammad Akmal Siddique, "a very senior administrator in Pakistan cricket", in a family of seven children, with six sons who all played cricket at some point but many went to business, and one daughter.[13] He is the youngest brother of Adnan Akmal and Kamran Akmal who are also cricketers, both wicket-keepers. He is also the cousin of Pakistani batsman Babar Azam. In 2014 he married Noor Amna, the daughter of Pakistan leg-spinner Abdul Qadir.[14] Early career and domestic career Akmal represented Pakistan in the 2008 U/19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia. After his success at the U-19 level he earned himself a first-class contract and played the 2007–08 season of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, representing the Sui Northern Gas team.[citation needed] He is an aggressive style cricketer. In only his sixth first-class match he scored 248 off just 225 deliveries, including four sixes.[15] He followed that up with an unbeaten 186 in his 8th first-class match, off just 170 balls. He fared less well in his second season of first-class cricket, with a string of low scores batting at number 3.[citation needed] He found form in the final few matches of the 2008/09 season and then in the RBS T20 tournament which led to him getting selected to play for Pakistan A side on their tour to Australia A. Akmal came to prominence during the Australia A tour in June/July 2009. In the two unofficial Test matches he recorded scores of 54, 100*, 130, 0. In the unofficial ODI series that followed, Akmal continued his fine form with a century in the opening ODI encounter off just 68 deliveries. These performances made him gather considerable praise from the media who were there to witness him and calls began to grow about his inclusion in the ODI series for the main Pakistan side against Sri Lanka. Later that year, Akmal made his Test, ODI, and T20I debut. He played for Sui Northern Gas in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy until 2016–17, during which time Sui Northern Gas won three times (2007-08, 2014-15, 2015-16). However, he was briefly dropped from the first-class side for the 2012 President's Trophy.[16] Akmal played for United Bank Limited in 2017–18, and for Habib Bank Limited in 2018-19 and won the 2018–19 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with Habib Bank Limited. Akmal played for the Lahore Lions in the National T20 Cup until 2015–16, during which time Lahore Lions won the tournament three times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14). Akmal played for Balochistan in the 2016 Pakistan Cup. He captained Punjab in the 2017 Pakistan Cup, with Punjab finishing 4th out of 5th. In April 2018, he was named in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup.[17][18] He was the leading run-scorer for Habib Bank Limited in the 2018–19 Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup, with 410 runs in ten matches.[19] In March 2019, he was named in Baluchistan's squad for the 2019 Pakistan Cup.[20][21] In the opening match of the tournament, he scored 136 not out, his highest total in List A cricket.[22] He was the leading run-scorer in the tournament, with 342 runs in five matches.[23] In September 2019, he was named in Central Punjab's squad for the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament.[24][25] Central Punjab won the tournament and Akmal was named man of the match in the final.[citation needed] link:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umar_Akmal
  6. Four years after their conviction, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar were acquitted in the Avenfield properties corruption reference after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) overturned the July 2018 verdict on Thursday. In a brief order, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the court said: “For the reasons to be recorded later, the instant appeal is allowed and the judgement dated July 6, 2018, is set aside.” It added that Maryam and Captain Safdar’s convictions have been set aside and they have been acquitted of the charges in the reference. Speaking outside the court, the PML-N leader hailed the verdict and said that Mian Nawaz Sharif stood “vindicated”.Legal eagles weigh in Lawyer Maryam Ali Abbasi called the verdict “quite damning” for the accountability watchdog which she said was “already moving towards heavy regulation or redundancy”. Lawyer Mirza Moiz Baig while talking to Dawn.com said “a person who has been convicted of a crime involving corruption or moral turpitude is disqualified from contesting elections unless a period of five years has lapsed since their release”. “While the Supreme Court has, in the case of Samiullah Baloch, held that a disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) continues for life, a disqualification under Article 63(1)(g) isn’t incurable,” he explained. “Maryam Nawaz, unlike her father, was never declared to fall short of the requirements enshrined under Article 62(1)(f). To the contrary, the only bar to her contesting elections was her conviction in the Avenfield reference. With the conviction being overturned by the Islamabad High Court, Maryam Nawaz’s candidature for an election to the Parliament will no longer trigger Article 63(1)(g).” “The judgment rendered by the high court may, thus, pave the way for Maryam Nawaz’s formal foray into electoral politics,” he concluded. Meanwhile, lawyer Basil Nabi Malik said that the overturning of the conviction should not come as a surprise to anyone. “From the very beginning, there were severe doubts about the manner, mode, and method of achieving the conviction,” he told Dawn.com. “However, although correct in doing so, unfortunately, this overturning will be seen by many as a sign of changed times, as opposed to any real achievement of justice,” he said, adding that such was the degree of politicisation in the country. Today’s hearing A two-member bench, comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, presided over today’s hearing during which the court heard arguments from both sides. At the outset of the hearing, Maryam’s lawyer Amjad Pervaiz and NAB prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi appeared before the court. “At the previous hearing Usman Cheema presented the arguments but he is not feeling well today,” the bureau’s lawyer told the court. He then requested to present arguments with the bench’s permission. During today’s hearing, Justice Kiyani remarked that the opinion of the investigating officer could not be considered as evidence. “The joint investigation team did not present any fact, it just collected information,” he observed. For his part, Muzaffar said that Wajid Zia — former director of the Federal Investigation Agency — had overviewed the documents himself and expressed his opinion on it. “I will show from the documents that these properties were purchased in 1999,” the NAB prosecutor said. Justice Kayani also inquired about the other documents the prosecution had produced apart from oral statements. “What is the position of Nawaz Sharif regarding this case?” the judge asked, to which Muzaffar replied that Nawaz’s position was that he had no relation to the property. The court remarked that if Nawaz maintained that he had no link, then the prosecution had to prove it. The court observed that Muzaffar’s statements were contradictory, adding that the NAB prosecutor had said at the previous hearing that Maryam had no role in purchasing the properties. “Usman [Cheema] clearly said that Maryam had nothing to do with the properties in 1993. You’re saying that Maryam’s connection was there from the beginning,” Justice Farooq remarked, adding that NAB should first make itself clear on the issue and then inform the court. Muzaffar replied that Nawaz had bought properties in London in Maryam’s name while being a public office holder. Justice Farooq told Muzaffar to prove his claims with evidence, further remarking that NAB had no case apart from the various applications filed. “The details could have been taken if Wajid Zia knew that the properties were worth $5 million. It was not difficult at all to get the details of the properties,” the judge remarked, to which Muzaffar replied that determining the value of properties was not relevant. Justice Farooq pointed out that Muzaffar was “absolutely wrong” in saying that the determination of value was irrelevant. At one point, Justice Farooq observed that the Sharif family’s stance was that they had bought the properties in 2006. “Despite their admission, Nawaz is not related [to the case],” he remarked. Justice Kayani also observed that on the basis of these documents, the NAB had prepared the entire case against Maryam. “In the entire case by the NAB, there is no [mention] of Nawaz,” Justice Farooq noted. Justice Farooq remarked that a property being in a daughter’s name did not necessarily mean that it was owned by the father. The NAB prosecutor contended that the Sharif family had not submitted any documents in its defence. At that, Justice Farooq said, “Why should they have presented any documents? It was not their job. The NAB had to prove [the case against them].” Justice Kayani added, “They should have stood silently. They should not have said anything.” “If they admit while standing in the rostrum that they owned the properties, even then the prosecution has to prove [the case against them],” Justice Farooq added. He said that NAB’s case may be valid, but it had failed to prove it. “The investigator has to prove this position as wrong. The prosecution has to prove that the real ownership belongs to Nawaz Sharif,” the judge said, adding that the watchdog had to bring the facts to light after the investigation. He told NAB to show the documents that proved the property trail to be wrong. Meanwhile, Justice Farooq said that the case commenced in 2006 but the accountability bureau took it all the way back to 1993. “The Sharif family had nothing to do with the properties in 1993,” he observed. Justice Kayani concurred, saying that according to the Sharif family’s admission, the case against them was registered in 2006. He noted that Maryam being written down as the beneficial owner was just an opinion and there was no evidence for it. “The case that NAB has made is against Maryam Nawaz and not against Nawaz Sharif,” he added. Here, Justice Farooq pondered here how the case was merited since the PML-N vice president was not any public office holder. “If they did not have their own admission then there would have been no case against them. The Sharif families had nothing to do with the properties in 1993,” Justice Farooq noted. Furthermore, Justice Kayani pointed out that it was now clear the ownership of the properties belonged to the companies and then called on NAB to show the link of the companies to Nawaz or Maryam. “Captain (retd) Safdar was convicted on the basis of the trust deed. Even if we consider that this is a fake document, all parties are accepting [it],” he said, adding that there was a possibility that the document was “false and prepared later”. Justice Kiyani also inquired if Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz or Captain Safdar were ever arrested in the case. “No, none of them were arrested,” the NAB prosecutor replied. Subsequently, the court reserved its verdict. The reference On July 6, a few weeks before the elections in 2018, the accountability judge of Islamabad, who was working under the supervision of an apex court judge, convicted the Sharif family in the Avenfield apartment reference. Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was handed 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond known income and one year for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Meanwhile, Maryam was given 7 years for abetment after she was found “instrumental in concealment of the properties of her father” and one year for non-cooperation with the bureau. Safdar was given one year jail time — for not cooperating with NAB, and aiding and abetting Nawaz and Maryam. The Sharif family had filed appeals against its conviction before the IHC in the second week of August 2018. The court had on Sep 18 the same year suspended their sentences and released them on bail. In October last year, Maryam filed a new application, along with “extremely relevant, simple and clear-cut facts”, with the IHC seeking annulment of that verdict. link:https://www.dawn.com/news/1712573

  10. Washington: Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday blamed former Prime Minister Imran Khan for the worsening political crisis in the country and said that he has become irrelevant as far as foreign policy of the country is concerned. "Luckily for foreign policy, most of the world is happy to ignore Imran Khan," Bilawal said during an event of a Washington think tank, Woodrow Wilson Centre's Asia Programme. On being asked about the toxic polarisation in Pakistan politics spearheaded by former Pak PM Imran Khan, Bilawal said the politics in the country is destructive. "Domestic politics is incredibly destructive, and democracy only works if you all want it to work. So, it's not so pretty but democracy is not pretty anywhere," he said. Criticizing the PTI Chief for his political rallies, the Pakistan Foreign Minister advised Imran Khan to respect democracy and democratic institutions. "My advice to Imran khan would be...Respect democracy, respect democratic institutions, and do your job," Bilawal said in a statement during the event. Imran Khan is one of the country's leaders who were ousted before they could finish their tenure. First, he lost his majority in the National Assembly after Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key ally, walked out of the coalition, accusing the government of economic mismanagement. The Opposition tabled a no-confidence vote in the parliament, seeking his ouster.Following his ouster, Khan also asked President to dissolve assemblies and call fresh elections in order to block a no-confidence vote that was tabled in National Assembly to oust him from power, however, the president dissolved the country's parliament instead. Moreover, Imran's foreign policy was not in consonance with the Pakistan Army which wanted the US on its side. However, Imran Khan has always decried a US-led foreign conspiracy against him.The faltering US-Pak ties got a boost following the ouster of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in April this year. Khan had accused the Biden administration of hatching a conspiracy against him. Post a comment Recently, US State Department approved a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Pakistani government for the sustainability of the Pakistan Air Force F-16 fleet, which drew the ire of the Indian government. link:https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/most-of-world-is-happy-to-ignore-imran-khan-pak-fm-bilawal-bhutto-zardari-3383760
  11. The incessant drumming of a woodpecker on a hollow tree can be an annoying distraction for anyone who has to listen to it. To other woodpeckers, however, it’s as distinct and as telling as any birdsong. A new study, published last week in the journal PLOS Biology, found that a woodpecker’s drumming and a songbird’s singing are governed by similar specialized structures in the birds’ brains, structures that aren’t found in those of other nonsinging birds. And both behaviors serve the same purposes of marking out territory and attracting mates, the researchers said. The findings are especially intriguing because the singing of songbirds has important parallels to human speech, so the drumming of woodpeckers could now, too, give new scientific insights into how humans talk. “Woodpeckers use drumming as songbirds use song,” said a senior author of the new research, evolutionary biologist Matthew Fuxjager, an associate professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. “The structures are similar in size and shape and are similar in terms of where we find them in the brain.” The research combines two approaches to the study of woodpeckers: work by Fuxjager into their ecology and work by his collaborator, Erich Jarvis, a professor of neurogenetics at Rockefeller University in New York, into the genetic mechanisms at play. The researchers found that drumming by woodpeckers and singing by songbirds are governed by very similar structures in the forebrains of the animals, made of cells that strongly express the protein parvalbumin. “When you study songbirds, hummingbirds and parrots, you find areas that control vocal learning express parvalbumin more than other parts of the brain,” Fuxjager said. He noted that structures of cells that strongly express parvalbumin are also seen in human brains but that they aren’t seen in birds that don’t communicate with vocalizations. It was a surprise, therefore, when the research led by Fuxjager and Jarvis found such structures in the woodpecker brains but not in those of birds that don’t sing, such as emus, penguins and ducks (quacks don’t count). Fuxjager suggested in the study that both the singing and the drumming originated in specialized brain structures for refined motor control in the ancestors of modern birds. Although they might sound quite different, the behaviors are remarkably similar. Both involve complex muscle coordination, and both are used to mark out territory to competitors, which can hear the drumming or singing from afar. link:https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/woodpecker-knocking-actually-drum-solo-scientists-say-rcna49456
  12. When Honda's new TrailSport off-road treatment first debuted on the two-row 2022 Passport, we were disappointed to learn it was little more than an appearance package, a butch dress-up kit for the otherwise pedestrian Passport SUV. But we knew then that the first-year Passport TrailSport and the larger '22 Pilot TrailSport were only the beginning for the TrailSport sub-brand, which promised to expand not only to other Honda SUVs but also to grow more capable, too. The larger, all-new 2023 Honda Pilot's TrailSport variant represents the next phase. While it's no rock crawler—this is still, after all, a car-based three-row family crossover—the newest Pilot TrailSport is able to traverse roads less traveled, based on our ride in a camouflaged pre-production model. While we can't show you the interior or details of the exterior, we can relay how the ruggedest Pilot ever handles the Swan River trail in Breckenridge, Colorado and how this SUV came to be.Honda's engineers at its Research and Development center in Raymond, Ohio knew that the initial TrailSport effort on the old Pilot had left plenty of room for improvement. That next level didn't come without some convincing of the Honda of Americas executives, however. In 2018, the Ohio engineers took a third-generation Pilot and added a one-inch lift and all-terrain tires to test out their ideas of what TrailSport could be. Later that same year, the engineers took those aforementioned executives out for a trail ride in that modified Pilot around the off-road trails of Lake Arrowhead in San Bernardino, California, during the one time in 2018 that Southern California saw rain. The modified three-row not only survived, but impressed the execs enough to make this the blueprint for this upcoming Pilot TrailSport based on the new fourth-gen Pilot. The goal for the 2023 Pilot TrailSport was for it to conquer moderate-difficulty trails as rated by U.S. public land authorities. This means the new Pilot TrailSport is capable of traversing over 50 percent of the publicly available off-road trails in the U.S., and can reach places most average mid-size crossover SUVs could not. After all, how many mall-crawlers do you see easily tackling dirt, mud, sand, medium-sized rocks, water crossings, ditches, slopes, or high-tilting terrain? Before we delve further into the TrailSport's upgrades, let's pause to look at what's new with its basis: The all-new 2023 Pilot. This new-gen Pilot receives improvements to its unibody, with additional support structures and revisions to its existing structures upping rear lateral rigidity by 30 percent, rear bending rigidity by 20 percent, rear damper torsion by 30 percent, and front lateral rigidity by a staggering 60 percent over the 2022 Pilot. The rear body also now has more load paths to maintain overall stiffness in spite of the new SUV's larger cabin space. Every Pilot will look similar, though the TrailSport does jazz things up with beefier tires, some unique body cladding, a one-inch increase in ride height over last year's TrailSport (accomplished via longer springs, not simply spacers), and retuned shocks front and rear. Not only are the shocks and springs matched to take advantage of the additional one inch of travel afforded by the new springs, but Honda also throws in a set of off-road-optimized anti-roll bars. There are further hardware changes, too, that go well beyond the 2022 Pilot TrailSport's "rugged-style tires" and "exclusive TrailSport styling." Those include a new Trail drive mode that utilizes Honda's Real Time AWD with a "Trail torque logic" power split scheme. When the chassis goes off-tilt where a wheel is off the ground, power is split not only between the front and rear wheels, but also the left and right wheels. The front axle accomplishes this using the brakes to lock the airlifted wheel without traction in order to drive the tire with traction. The rear, however, can distribute torque across the axle, delivering up to 75 percent of engine torque sent rearward to the wheel with traction, leaving 25 percent flowing to the non-tractive tire. The reason? So the wheel in the air can immediately help motivate the Pilot forward when it touches back down. Additionally, the rear differential is capable of distributing 2,206 lb-ft of force, far more than the standard 2023 Pilot (1,838 lb-ft) or the previous-generation Pilot (1,568 lb-ft). Essentially, the gearing has been changed to provide more rear-axle torque while you're off-roading. link:https://www.motortrend.com/news/2023-honda-pilot-trailsport-prototype-drive-review/

  14. PTI Chairman Imran Khan addressed Wednesday’s audio leak allegedly featuring himself regarding the ‘Cablegate’ cypher and said the document at the centre of the entire affair should now be leaked. Earlier in the day, a clip was making rounds on social media featuring a conversation between what is believed to be Imran and his former principal secretary, Azam Khan, about a cypher that the PTI chief has for long presented as evidence of a “foreign conspiracy” to oust him from the top office. In the audio clip, Imran is heard saying: “We only have to play on this. We don’t have to name [any country]. We only have to play with this, that this date was [decided] before. “The new thing that will emerge is that the letter …”The PTI Twitter account subsequently shared a video of reporters questioning Imran regarding the matter, to which he said: “The [US] cypher should leak so it comes out before everyone and everyone can know how big a foreign conspiracy happened”. He also alleged that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government was behind the audio leak, adding that it was “very good that they have done so”.Questioned on a part of the clip where Imran said he would “play with the cable”, the PTI chief said: “I have not even begun to play with it. Now they will expose it so we will play with it.” His comments come as party leaders characterised the latest leaks as evidence the cypher was real. An accompanying hashtag — “cypher aik haqeeqat hai (the cypher is a reality)” — was the top trend on Pakistani Twitter, racking nearly 100,000 retweets at the time of this report. Forensic audit of leaks to be conducted, says Sanaullah Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the government would ensure that a forensic audit of the purported leaks was conducted to “expose Imran’s true face to the nation”.Sanaullah asserted that this time, the PTI chief would have to respond to the purported audio because the “voice in it is his”. For the past six months, he said, everyone has been listening about the foreign conspiracy narrative and how the incumbent government was brought unconstitutionally. “Today, everything Imran said has proven to be false. His narrative has been broken into pieces. “This audio leak has revealed the filth inside Imran,” the minister claimed. He went on to say that during the 3.5 years of the PTI government, Imran did “irreparable damage” to Pakistan economically, politically and morally. “Imran only creates narratives that are based on fraud […] which is also the case with his politics. He only wants to divide the youth and polarise them. “People need to realise that this man needs to be exposed and be stopped from spreading this chaos, otherwise he will lead the nation to a point of no return,” Sanaullah said, stressing that it was extremely important to “expose” the PTI chairman’s “true face”. In reply to a question about how the leaks raised questions about security, the minister said that whether these audios were legal or Constitution “is a different matter”, elaborating that the media has changed today. He added that if such an act truly exposed a perpetrator, then it was beneficial. Cypher audio leak In today’s leak, a second voice, believed to be of the former principal secretary, is heard, suggesting holding a meeting on the cypher. “See, if you recall, in that the ambassador has written in the end to [send] a demarche. Even if the demarche is not to be sent, as I have thought a lot about it at night — you said they raised it — I thought about how to cover all this. “Let’s hold a meeting with Shah Mahmood Qureshi (who was the foreign minister in Imran’s government) and the foreign secretary. Shah Mahmood Qureshi will read out that letter and whatever he reads out will be converted into a copy. I will then make minutes [out of it and say] that the foreign secretary has prepared this. “But its (cypher’s) analysis will have to be conducted here. We will carry out the analysis and convert it into minutes as we want so that it becomes [part of] the office record.” He elaborates that the analysis would conclude that “it is a threat. It is called a threat in diplomatic language”. The man, believed to be Azam, adds that “minutes are in my hands … we will draft the minutes”. Here, Imran is heard asking who would be called to the meeting. “Shah Mahmood, you, me and Sohail?” Just these, the other person says. “We will do it tomorrow,” the person believed to be Imran replies. In turn, the voice, supposedly belonging to Azam, is heard explaining that following this plan, “things will become a part of the record. “Consider that they are the consulate for the state. When he will read it out, I will easily copy it and it will be on record that this has happened.” Moreover, he suggests that “you (supposedly Imran) call the foreign secretary so that it doesn’t remain political and becomes a part of the bureaucratic record”. To this, Imran points out that an ambassador has written the cypher, implying that it should already be a part of the bureaucratic record since it has been written by an envoy. “But we don’t have a copy of it. How did they release it?” the person on the other end replies. Leaks reveal significant breach in security at PMO What began as an alleged and potentially embarrassing audio leak seems to have turned into an all-out national security incident as a slew of audio recordings of conversations between key government figures — including PM Shehbaz, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and some members of the federal cabinet — were released over the weekend. The content of the recordings appear to be informal conversations in the PM Office — as opposed to recorded phone conversations. On Saturday, a recording of PM Shehbaz surfaced where he was discussing with an unidentified official the possibility of facilitating the import of Indian machinery for a power project that was a concern of Maryam’s son-in-law, Raheel. On Sunday, further recordings surfaced, which were shared on social media by several PTI leaders, concerning former finance minister Miftah Ismail and the resignations of PTI lawmakers from the National Assembly. One clip purportedly features a conversation between Maryam and the premier about Ismail, wherein a voice thought to belong to the former says he “doesn’t know what he is doing” and wishes for the return of PML-N stalwart Ishaq Dar. A second clip allegedly concerns a conversation between the prime minister, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Ayaz Sadiq about the resignations of PTI lawmakers from the National Assembly. A third clip purportedly features a conversation between Maryam and PM Shehbaz regarding the return of former army chief retired Gen Pervez Musharraf. PM Shehbaz on Tuesday termed the surfacing of audio leaks a “very serious lapse” and announced that a high-level committee would be constituted to probe the matter. link:https://www.dawn.com/news/1712412
