  5. Nearby, visitors can also feed sweet potatoes to a camel or hay to zebra, or get keepers to prod a caged lion for a selfie. The historic zoo was the first in the region and was once a symbol of Egypt's modernity. But its practices - which experts say are rooted in the 1950s - and its premises are badly in need of an update. Still, a recent government announcement that its doors will be closed for a year to make improvements has been met with scepticism by the public and animal welfare groups alike. "My kids love the zoo. We come here on weekends and holidays," says Ahmed Ibrahim, a father of four, sitting on a small rug with his family by the pelican pond. The factory worker, who is paid just under $100 (Β£82) a month, has little money to spare for leisure activities and fears the zoo will now become unaffordable. Like millions of Egyptians, he has been hit by skyrocketing prices and the latest currency devaluation. "Right now, the entrance ticket is five [Egyptian] pounds ($0.20; Β£0.16) and the kids go free. How much will it be after the new development?" Ahmed wonders. Poor conditions For the renovation, Egypt's ministry of agriculture is handing over responsibility for the 80 acres of zoo and gardens to a military-run company and a United Arab Emirates-based consultancy. In return, they will get the right to profits made over the next 25-years. The Egyptian President, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, says the project will "develop the zoo to be similar to its world-class peers". He has previously complained about the site, saying it represents "the extent of negligence and shortcomings" in the country. Poor conditions - including elephants tethered on short chains, a giraffe so depressed it killed itself, and monkeys being provoked by children - have drawn negative attention in recent years. The zoo has long lost its membership of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Waza). Today, keepers still lack training and are low paid. Many hold back food for animals until visitors pay for it and will harass caged creatures to make them roar or perform tricks in exchange for tips. 'Lack of transparency' One of the many reforms promised is to replace the Victorian-style, cell-like cages for lions and bears with open-range spaces. However, animal rights advocates are worried. They complain that the plans for the zoo lack transparency and do not prioritise the welfare of the animals kept there, which include some endangered species. "The zoo is too small to build open-range spaces," says veteran activist Dina Zulfikar. "Officials talk about the zoo as an entertainment centre rather than a zoological garden. The real goals of modern zoos are completely overlooked." Ms Zulfikar has previously successfully campaigned for improvements at the zoo, such as fans and a cooling system for the bear exhibit. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64295601
  6. The sixth-generation Toyota Hiace has been with us for quite some time and has essentially succeeded the previous cab-over model. But don't expect the fifth-generation Hiace to go out just yet as Toyota Motor Philippines still offers it in Cargo, Commuter, and Ambulance versions. Over in Japan, Toyota also continues to offer the previous generation Hiace alongside the latest model. The automaker even upgraded it with Safety Sense back in 2020 for added peace of mind despite its age. With that, we can expect the cab-over Hiace to be with us for several more years.Fast forward to 2024 and Toyota has just given the two-decade-old Hiace another refresh. But don't expect any major changes on the vehicle as Toyota decided to give it a more subtle update. For starters, there's a new Earth Color Package for the top-of-the-line model that gives the Hiace a nice shade of beige. It is then accompanied by a blacked-out grille that complements the unpainted bumpers and the chrome-finished door handles & side mirrors. Toyota also made some key changes in the Hiace Welcab, a dedicated variant to help disabled passengers load up their wheelchairs. For 2024, the automaker installed a new wheelchair mount that they claim will hasten securing the wheelchair in the back. Just like before, the 2024 Hiace is available with three engine options. The range starts with the 2.0-liter 1TR-FE gasoline inline-four that makes 136 PS with 182 Nm of torque and is followed by the more powerful 2.7-liter 2TR-FE which puts out 160 PS and 243 Nm of torque. Serving as the most powerful engine is the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel that cranks out 151 PS with 300 Nm of torque. While we cannot expect the updates to make their way here in the Philippines, it's nice to see that Toyota still updates the previous generation Hiace from time to time. https://www.autoindustriya.com/auto-industry-news/toyota-gives-5th-gen-hiace-fresh-new-updates-for-2024.html
  7. The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand saw a total of 32 national teams from five confederations fight for the title of football world champions from 20 July to 20 August, with the United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) as two-time defending champions. England and Spain faced off in the final with La Roja winning their first ever world title. Sweden took the bronze. The FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 followed a familiar format of 32 teams divided into eight groups - Group A to H - of four teams each. The teams in each group competed in a single-headed round-robin format in the group stage of the competition. Each team played three games and two nations in each group with the most points qualified for the knockout stages. Teams were awarded three points for each win, one point each for a draw, and no points for a defeat. If a country finished the group stage level on points with another nation, the two were separated based on who had the higher goal difference (goals scored, minus goals conceded). If teams still could not be separated, the team with the greater number of goals scored was placed higher in the group. 8. Egyptians who took to the streets to cheer for the general-turned-president a decade ago are not as happy as they hoped they would be. As Mr Sisi runs for his third consecutive term as president next week, a crumbling economy is top of most people's list of complaints. Nadia is one of those struggling to make ends meet as Mr Sisi's government continues to implement what it calls "economic reforms". The 57-year-old widow and mother of six can barely make a living selling newspapers at a street-side kiosk. In her small flat in one of Cairo's crowded slums, Nadia tells me that she last bought meat three years ago. To her, life is becoming more unaffordable by the day.s ago. To her, life is becoming more unaffordable by the day. "I am too scared to go to sleep sometimes, because I know the next morning prices will have gone up," she says with a faint smile and eyes full of pain. The latest official figures show that Egypt's inflation rate in October was 38.5%, a slight fall from the record 40.3% reported the previous month. These numbers are unheard of in the Arab world's most populous country, and the real inflation rate experienced by ordinary people is often much worse than the government's figure. 'We are forgotten' But as prices have risen, Nadia's income has dropped. More than a decade ago, she used to sell nearly 200 newspapers a day, but today it is barely 20. Nadia says today cooking a meal costs between 300 and 500 Egyptian pounds (Β£7.70-Β£13; $9.70-16.20), but a few years ago it was about a sixth of the price. "Even fruit is too expensive," she tells me. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67641510
  9. The Information and Decision Support Centre at the Cabinet has prepared a comprehensive research project titled β€œDocument Highlighting the Strategic Directions for the Egyptian Economy for the New Presidential Term (2024-2030).” This document identifies and ranks policy actions for the Egyptian economy until 2030, covering both general economic trends and specific strategies for economic and social sectors that support the development of the Egyptian state. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, said: β€œIn the current period of conflicts and wars worldwide, especially in the Middle East, and the previous challenges of the pandemic that posed significant challenges to countries globally, causing major political, social, and economic impacts on different continents, we have prepared a comprehensive research project for a set of economic directions for the upcoming period. This takes into account the changes in global conditions and sustainable development trends, and the government emphasizes the vital importance of involving experts and specialists in shaping public policies to make the most of the available national minds and experiences across all sectors and specialties.” Osama El-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and Head of the Information and Decision Support Centre, said: β€œThe document includes policies that aim to establish the foundations of an economic renaissance based on enhancing local production capacities and increasing the resilience of the Egyptian economy in facing crises. It also includes policies that prioritize the continuation of efforts to improve the lives of millions of Egyptians, with key objectives such as achieving strong, inclusive, sustainable, and balanced economic growth of 6% to 8%, focusing on the quality of economic growth by enhancing the contribution of exports and investments in generating output and targeting a supportive economic growth rate to provide 7 to 8 million job opportunities during that period.” The document adopts predictable and supportive economic policies for overall economic stability, targeting price stability, fiscal discipline, putting public debt on sustainable paths, and implementing a program to boost foreign exchange reserves with a targeted yield of $300bn by the end of 2030, representing three times the current levels. The document also implements strategies, plans, and programs that support the performance of leading economic sectors for the development of the Egyptian state. The document strengthens the foundations of a sustainable and competitive knowledge-based economy by supporting the role of research and development in building the Egyptian state’s renaissance, accelerating the transition to industrial revolution technologies, and moving sustainably towards a green economy. It lists all achievements in social sectors, with a focus on education and health, and improving the living standards of citizens to ensure a life that meets the aspirations of Egyptians. The document enhances Egypt’s leading role in the global economy by activating and maximizing the economic role of the Suez Canal, enhancing Egypt’s role in transit trade, and continuing to forge effective international strategic partnerships while promoting the involvement of youth as a fundamental pillar of progress on multiple fronts. https://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2024/01/07/information-centre-of-cabinet-proposes-strategic-directions-for-egyptian-economy-for-2024-2030/
  10. The latest entry in the renewed transparent gadget craze: your Asus ROG Ally handheld gaming PC. Today, lauded Steam Deck accessory maker Jsaux is taking the wraps off a $40 frosted RGB rear shell for the Asus handheld that lets you see some of its delightful innards. It might not give you a perfect look through the back, now that I see how much of that frosting blocks the red circuit boards. It also probably won’t enhance your cooling like the company’s Steam Deck backplate, but that frosted surface should bathe nicely in RGB light, not to mention the five light-catching stickers you can place inside. https://www.theverge.com/23774468/clear-transparent-tech-gadgets-news-announcements-products
  11. Morocco has topped the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Digital Development Index (IDI) for 2023, with a score of 85.1. This score exceeds the global average of 72.8, as well as the African average of 47.4. The IDI is a composite index that measures a country's level of development in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector. It takes into account a range of factors, including the availability of ICT infrastructure, the use of ICT by individuals and businesses, and the impact of ICT on society. The report highlights a noteworthy trend, revealing that among the top 10 economies with IDI scores exceeding 95, four belong to Arab states, three to Europe (Denmark, Estonia, Finland), two to the Asia-Pacific region, and one to the Americas. Leading the charge, Morocco excels in the "Individuals Using the Internet" category, surpassing the global average of 70.5% with an outstanding rate of 92.8%. Additionally, when it comes to "Households with Home Internet Access" and "3G/4G Coverage," where global averages stand at 70.8% and 92.5% respectively, Morocco maintains a robust position with rates of 90.7% and 99.2%. Furthermore, within the Asia-Pacific group, a considerable 69-point gap separates the highest-performing country (98.4) from the least performing (28.9). Interestingly, out of the 33 African economies assessed by the IDI, 25 receive scores below 50 points, underscoring the need for continued development in the region. The IDI assesses two types of connectivity: universal and meaningful. Universal connectivity considers the connectivity of individuals, households, and communities, regardless of their urban or rural setting, gender, or educational level. Conversely, meaningful connectivity relies on various factors known as "connectivity enablers." These include infrastructure, financial accessibility, devices, skills, safety, and security, all playing pivotal roles in enhancing connectivity. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/12/359730/morocco-leads-global-digital-development-index
  12. Microsoft plans to refresh its Xbox hardware lineup in 2024 with new versions of the Xbox Series S and Series X consoles and a new β€œmore immersive” controller, according to unredacted documents released as part of the Federal Trade Commission’s case against the Activision Blizzard merger that have apparently been published by accident. The Series X will get the most dramatic redesign, codenamed β€œBrooklin.” The premium console will have a new, cylindrical case and no disc drive, meaning that Microsoft will leave physical media behind entirely with this mid-generation refresh. The Series X’s storage will be doubled to 2 TB, its wireless and Bluetooth capabilities will be upgraded, it will be more power efficient, and there’ll be a new USB-C port on the front. It will have the same price point as the current console, $499, and Microsoft is planning to release it in November 2024. https://www.polygon.com/23880201/xbox-series-x-mid-gen-refresh-brooklin-ellewood-sebile
  13. There are many highly anticipated sequels and new IP set to release in 2024. More games are now receiving simultaneous releases on PC, including console exclusives. Many upcoming PC games will launch people into a new era of gaming with better graphics and new mechanics. While 2023 was a standout year for PC Games, with major releases like Baldur's Gate 3, Alan Wake II, and the remake of Resident Evil 4 all launching to massive success and critical acclaim, there's still plenty to look forward to in 2024 - especially with several games and franchises set to receive highly-anticipated sequels. With many games initially announced in 2023 and earlier years set to finally be released in 2024, the year is set to receive a lineup of games on par with the releases of the previous year. While console exclusives are still prominent, especially on platforms like the Switch and PlayStation, more games than ever before are now receiving simultaneous releases on PC, including those from franchises that have traditionally not released on Steam or Windows, like the Persona series. Even some console exclusives, such as God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Horizon Zero Dawn have been delayed on the platform. And with several previously announced games set to finally launch in 2024, there's plenty to look forward to for those who use PC as their main gaming platform. https://screenrant.com/most-anticipated-pc-games-2024/#hades-ii-q2-2024
