  1. As ransomware attacks continue to plague local government entities — Bexar County Appraisal District was the latest victim — hackers’ methods and organizations have become more sophisticated. At least one hacker group identified by the FBI appears to have an HR department, performance reviews and an “employee of the month.” Professionals simulated these complex, highly targeted attacks this week at a student competition in San Antonio, sponsored by Raytheon Technologies as a way to train and recruit the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. The finals of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, held at the Hyatt Regency Hill County Resort and Spa from Thursday to Saturday, saw 10 teams from 10 schools across the country play defense against coordinated cyberattacks. More than 150 other teams had already been eliminated before this week. The competition is the largest of its kind in the country, organizers said. Students on the teams played the roles of cybersecurity professionals protecting a business under active attack from intruders. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, real cybersecurity professionals acted the part of the hackers, seeking to disrupt and shut down system after system: emails, cloud-based servers, internal data and even the help desk. Points were awarded to teams who repelled the attacks and restored their systems as quickly as possible. Inside the University of Texas at Austin’s team room, sophomore Rishabh Ahlawat worked furiously to configure a firewall that would protect the Longhorns’ cloud servers and even alert them to new intruders. The teams’ computers sprawled across the desks showed blue screens and massive walls of coding text. “It’s stressful, but it’s a fun kind of stressful,” Ahlawat said. The team lost points every minute a product server remained down. His lunch sat untouched in its paper bag. Ahlawat said when he first came to college, he didn’t envision a future in cybersecurity. But competitions like this one have convinced him to enter the field when he graduates. His story illustrates a powerful reason why Raytheon Technologies, one of the largest intelligence contractors and defense manufacturers in the world by revenue, has sponsored the annual competition, now in its 17th year. Two dozen or so professionals from the company helped run the event, acting as performance assessors, and roleplaying as hackers and customers. “This is what you don’t get in classrooms,” said Jon Check, senior director of Cyber Protection Solutions for Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon subsidiary. He said the competition provides a way for students to hone their skills and see how the concepts they study apply to the real world. Of course in real life, cybersecurity more frequently takes the form of pre-emptive defense and recovery, rather than the intensive and condensed exercises experienced by these students. But cases like it do still happen. Ransomware attacks have risen for years in Texas, as they have across the country. In Texas, there were a just under just under 300 ransomware attacks in 2021, up nearly a third from 2020, according to FBI cybercrime statistics. In 2016 the FBI recorded 37 attacks of this kind in the state. In Bexar County, hackers last year launched a ransomware attack on Judson Independent School District, for which the district paid more than $500,000 to recover sensitive data. In March, the Bexar County Appraisal District found itself the target of an attack, though IT professionals detected the infiltration before it progressed through the entire network. A spokesman for the county department said critical systems were restored within days, and as of this week the restoration of all affected systems were “99% complete.” Assistant Chief Appraiser Scott Griscom said he could not say how attackers broke into the system, given that final findings of the investigation are not complete, but initial suspicions that it came through email have been disproven. Efforts are growing to counter these attacks. The White House recently signed legislation that will require a wide range of public and private entities affiliated with critical infrastructure to publicly disclose details about cyberattacks, including whether the organization paid a ransom. “That’s a big deal,” Check said, as historically many companies have chosen to simply hide it. For instance, Equifax, a consumer credit reporting agency, waited weeks before telling its 143 affected customers that their private data may be on the loose. Check said disclosing the hack helps law enforcement identify repeat attackers, puts other organizations on alert, and helps cybersecurity professionals know what kind of attacks to look out for. Elias Bou-Harb, director of UTSA’s Cyber Center for Security and Analytics, said one reason ransomware attacks are on the rise is because the infrastructure to launch them has gotten more accessible. He said there are now illicit service providers that sell off-the-shelf tools for launching ransomware attacks, so hackers no longer need to have as much technical expertise. Some of these tools-for-hire even sweep the internet to look for vulnerable systems. “The threat landscape is crazy. We’re in a cyber war,” Bou-Harb said. While cyberattacks grow increasingly sophisticated, there are ways to lower the risk of attack, experts say, for both individuals and organizations. It’s important to back up systems, (making sure those backups actually function, Bou-harb says), avoid reusing passwords (the jury is still out about writing down passwords), and be careful what you click on in emails. And to avoid encouraging future attacks, entities and individuals shouldn’t pay ransoms. “If you pay once, you’re probably opening a door on yourself,” Bou-Harb said. https://sanantonioreport.org/college-cybersecurity-contest-ransomware/
  2. The Intel Meteor Lake-H lineup maxes out at just 16 cores and 45W TDPs (PL1) while Raptor Lake-HX CPUs will max out at 24 cores and 55W+ TDP (PL1). This makes them perfect for the high-end gaming segment. While that doesn't mean that we won't get to see some high-end laptop configs with Meteor Lake like the one we just reported a few hours ago, the 14th Gen HX family will just be the better option for users who are looking for a portable desktop replacement. 3. At this year's New York Times Dealbook Summit, essentially a series of interviews with mega-wealthy CEOs, Jen-Hsun Huang of Nvidia was asked about why he constantly feels that his company may one day bite the dust. "I don't think people are trying to put me out of business—I probably know they're trying to," he said. "I live in this condition where we're partly desperate, partly aspirational." With a current market cap of $1.155 trillion, more than double what it was three years ago and the 6th largest in the world, Nvidia is exceedingly unlikely to ever actually go bust overnight. Huang co-founded the graphics giant in 1993, with Chris Malachowsky (currently Nvidia's Senior VP of Engineering and Ops) and Curtis Priem (now retired), and has led the company since that time. Things were pretty shaky in the early years but given that it now dominates the GPU and AI industries, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Jen-Hsun's remarks are nothing more than a spot of marketing hyperbole."I like to live in that state where we're about to perish, and so I enjoy that condition," he explains, going on to say that he felt that he always does his best work in those circumstances.Top-flight CEOs constantly battling with a fear of failure is common, so the polite laughs from the summit's live audience weren't from a sense of disbelief of Huang but rather a recognition that if you're not wary and take your foot of the accelerator, then there will always be another competitor ready to jump in and take that top spot. Nvidia isn't alone in the GPU/AI world: AMD and Intel are ever-present, of course, as are the rising number of chip firms in China. In the same interview, Huang was asked for his thoughts on chip independence, i.e. having all of the major components required for a graphics card or AI accelerator being manufactured in the US. "Total supply chain independence is not a real practical thing for a decade or two," he said, pointing out that some of Nvidia's systems use as many as 32,000 parts. If you take a standard Nvidia graphics card, the GeForce RTX 4060 for example, the main GPU is made by TSMC in Taiwan. The silicon chip is packaged by a different firm and then stored in distribution centers in Hong Kong. The manufacturing of the circuit board, memory chips, electronic components, heatsink, fans, and so on, are all done by dozens of companies, scattered around the world. The most expensive and complex part is the GPU itself and at the moment, the most cost-effective way of making it is to use TSMC's fabrication plants in Taiwan or Samsung's facilities in South Korea. Having that all done exclusively in the US is the goal of chip independence but it's a massive financial gamble, and possibly something that Jen-Hsun also frets about each morning. Makes me rather glad that the only thing that stresses me out when I wake up is how cold the shower is going to be. Sure, mega-rich CEOs get to wipe their tears away with $10k bundles of notes but I'll take the simple life every time. https://www.pcgamer.com/you-think-you-have-imposter-syndrome-nvidia-ceo-is-worried-his-trillion-dollar-company-might-go-bust-overnight/
  4. An undercover investigator with Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) who worked as a kennel attendant at a Petland store in Novi, Michigan, documented sick puppies, dangerous conditions, and improper animal care. The investigator witnessed puppies being delivered in unmarked vans from out of state, transported in stacked crates in the dark. Puppies with bloody feces were made available to the public for purchase. Transportation documents revealed that the Petland store has sourced puppies from problematic puppy mills, at least five of which have been included in the HSUS Horrible Hundred report due to state and federal inspection records documenting egregious or repeated animal care violations. Researchers obtained transportation paperwork linking at least 11 additional Michigan stores to known puppy mills. Some puppies suffered from wounds, congenital defects, hacking coughs, eye and nasal discharge, or vomiting and diarrhea. Others were lethargic, shivering or refused to eat. Some puppies had bloody feces but were still available for purchase, despite store staff being aware of these concerning issues. A Petland manager indicated that Freeman Raber in Ohio was one of their steadiest puppy suppliers, and had been sending the store puppies for about a decade. Raber was in the HSUS 2023 Horrible Hundred report after a state inspector cited him for improperly doing his own surgical procedures on several litters of puppies; the state report described the violation as “egregious.” Several puppies arrived at the store with obvious abdominal wounds. The consulting veterinarian described some of the wounds as repaired hernias, but in some cases, the incisions were opening back up and seemed infected. Some of the other puppies had issues such as abnormal masses, soft spots on their skulls, and other signs of congenital defects. On several occasions, puppies fell out of their stacked cages and hit the hard floor. Conversations with Petland employees indicated this was a recurring problem and had led to broken bones. The HSUS investigator recorded as puppies were unloaded from stacked metal cages in dark, crowded distributor vans with out-of-state tags. One of the workers used a flashlight to pick out the dogs who were going to Petland; the other dogs would be delivered to additional pet stores on the route. One of the van workers complained openly about having to go back to Illinois to pick up “more of these f**king yipping dogs.” “From a bleak start in a puppy mill, an interstate drive in a darkened, crowded van, and then suffering from illnesses and unsafe conditions on a sales floor… that is no life for a puppy,” said Blake Goodman, Michigan state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “No Michigander would knowingly put their beloved family pet through that, which is why we must put a stop to the retail sale of puppies in pet stores. Our state has a chance right now to do this by passing HB 4838 into law—further shrinking the number of stores where Midwest puppy mills can legally sell their puppies and helping shutter the industry across our region once and for all. Michiganders can make a difference on an individual level right now by refusing to buy a puppy from a pet store this holiday season—if you’re looking to add a new pet to your family, please adopt from your local shelter or visit a responsible breeder in person.” The investigation at the Petland store, which took place from July to September 2023, is one of a total of 10 Petland stores that HSUS has investigated since 2018. The investigations consistently found sick and dying puppies in the stores and deceptive sales tactics resulting in customers paying thousands of dollars to save their new, sick puppy. The chain has sold puppies sourced from puppy mills that have been cited by state or federal inspectors for filthy conditions, exposure to extreme temperatures, failure to provide proper veterinary care for puncture wounds, infections and other issues. HSUS researchers reviewed paperwork for 12 puppy-selling stores in Michigan altogether, discovering that each of the stores were selling puppies from out-of-state puppy mills, many of which had state or federal violations for issues such as dogs with bleeding wounds, and sick, injured, dirty, or matted dogs. HSUS researchers found that pet stores in Michigan were sourcing puppies from more than 160 different out-of-state commercial breeders, also known as puppy mills. The investigation proved what animal advocates have been saying for decades: puppies don’t belong in pet stores, and most of the puppies in stores come from puppy mills. HB 4838, introduced in June 2023, would end the sale of puppies, kittens, and rabbits in retail stores across the state, pushing the public toward more humane sources of puppies, such as small, local breeders, reputable pet rescue groups, and animal shelters. The bill has 32 co-sponsors in the House. Sixty pet supply stores that do not sell puppies have endorsed the bill, which is nearly four times more than the number of stores that sell puppies in the state. Seven other states have passed laws ending the sale of puppies in pet stores. https://worldanimalnews.com/undercover-investigation-exposes-petland-store-in-michigan-for-selling-sick-puppies-from-puppy-mills/

  15. Calling the peak of anything requires hindsight. Which is what has led to the widespread belief that the Japanese auto industry reached its pinnacle in the late 1980s, that era exemplified by the number of sports cars making their debuts in the bi-annual Tokyo auto show. At the 1989 show, the first held at the vast Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, the list of sports car debutants included the original Acura NSX, Mitsubishi GTO, Subaru SVX, second-generation Toyota MR2, and the adorable Suzuki Cappuccino kei-roadster, plus numerous forward-looking concepts. (The Mazda Miata, which made its Japanese debut, had already been shown in Chicago.) Yet the renamed 2023 Japan Mobility Show has got the record of its 1989 predecessor well and truly beaten. This is one of the most sports-car-heavy auto shows of all time, Japan’s manufacturers seemingly vying to present their own visions of a (mostly) electrified performance future. Not everything is going to make it to production, and of those that do, not all will make it to the U.S. But we will never complain about a world with more sports cars. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g45653469/2023-tokyo-auto-show-sports-cars-roundup/
  16. Are you someone who is looking to simplify your life? Over the last couple of years, minimalism has taken the world by storm. In its simplest form, minimalism is about striving to only use things that serve a purpose. It's about living a simple life and having only what you need to go about your daily routine. Contrary to po[CENSORED]r belief, this lifestyle isn't defined by cold environments, barren walls or empty apartments. Instead, it's all about embracing the idea of owning exactly what you need, rather than focusing on superfluous items or belongings that don't serve a purpose or add value to your life. With this in mind, it is no wonder that so many people are striving to live a minimalist lifestyle in today's world of excess and extravagance. Looking to declutter your life (and mind) as we usher in the new year? Luckily, we've got the perfect beginner's road map for getting on a path to living a more simple and minimal lifestyle at home and in life. Today, we share 6 tips for embracing minimalism in the upcoming year of 2023, so read on to find out more! Declutter your space It is no guarded secret that clutter is essentially the antithesis of a minimalist lifestyle, making decluttering one of the most important steps to take as we quickly enter the new year. The simple fact is that minimalists own fewer possessions, and as a result, their homes feel calmer, more peaceful and less stressful. If you're guilty of holding on to unnecessary clutter (including clothes...because who isn't?) now is the perfect time to consider giving items away, donating them to charity or selling them online. You could even consider a shipping container hire to store larger items to sort out at a later date. The same rule applies to items that are broken, damaged or defective - if something isn't working, it's time to get rid of it. If you're still having trouble deciding on what to keep or toss, we recommend asking yourself the following questions: Do I need it? When was the last time I used it? What would I use if I didn't have it? Why do I have it? By asking yourself these important questions, you will be much better able to ascertain whether an item is helping you create the home that I want or is it actually distracting from it. If the mere thought of decluttering your home brings you more stress than it does serenity, we urge you to take it one step at a time. You may not be able to declutter your entire home in one day (or even one week), but you can make a little bit of progress when you slowly chip away at the task. Consider tackling one room at a time, and then notice the instant difference that it makes. Shop quality, not quantity Despite what many people believe, minimalism isn't about never purchasing anything ever again. Rather, when it comes to shopping, minimalists focus on intentional purchases and always prioritise quality over quantity. This means investing in items that are well made and will last you a lifetime, rather than wasting money on cheaper equivalents that need to be replaced in a matter of weeks or months. At the end of the day, the point is not that you can't treat yourself to something new. Instead, it's all about being conscious of what you buy and bring into your home (and life). Whether you're purchasing new shoes, furniture or a handbag, invest in quality pieces that will last you for years to come. You'll thank yourself later Learn more about how you can shop like a minimalist in this article. Top Tip: Even though a higher price tag may seem like an initial downside, you'll likely save more money in the long run by cutting down on frequent, low-quality purchases. Invest in reusables Are you guilty of having dozens of unused plastic grocery bags strewn all around your home or kitchen? As you slowly ease into a more minimalist lifestyle in 2023, one of the best things you can do for yourself (and the planet) is to consider investing in reusable items. Reusable items save you a ton of money in the long run, and are a great way to eliminate clutter, reduce waste and reduce your carbon footprint. One simple example is investing in keep cups or reusable glass water bottles instead of single use coffee cups and plastic water bottles. Other ideas include always bringing a reusable bag to the supermarket, rather than spending unnecessary money on single-use plastic bags that often end up in landfill. You could also consider purchasing your ingredients and dry goods from bulk food stores to reduce packaging waste and save money on your monthly grocery bill. Explore six ways minimalism and zero-waste go hand in hand in this article. Simplify your diet Minimalism is so much more than just how your apartment looks or the items you own - in fact, this concept also applies to what you put into your body. The food we consume has a major impact on physical and mental health, and a well-balanced diet is a proven way to help us think clearly and feel more alert. In its simplest form, eating a minimalist diet means keeping your food choices simple. It's all about avoiding processed or packaged foods and additives, and instead, focusing on high quality ingredients, simple recipes and seasonal produce. This is not to say that someone living a more minimalist lifestyle never eats packaged and processed food or takeout meals. Simply that most of a healthy minimalist diet consists of simple, whole foods. More importantly, a minimalist diet is a pattern of eating that doesn't eliminate any particular food groups or force you to adhere to any strict rules. It's all about ditching fad diets or trends and nourishing your body simply and more intuitively. Learn more about eating like a minimalist here. Invest in experiences You know what they say, collect moments and not things! A po[CENSORED]r practice in minimalism is prioritising experiences over buying things. Instead of wasting money on unnecessary items, consider being intentional with where you put your money by investing in experiences that help to create long lasting memories with the ones closest to you. Whether it's using the money you have saved to book a holiday for the family or treating yourself to a much deserved afternoon at the spa, start working your way through your bucket list and get reacquainted with the joy of doing things vs owning things. Contrary to po[CENSORED]r belief, minimalism isn't all about being frugal or penny pinching. In fact, one of the greatest perks of this lifestyle is that it frees time, money and energy to focus on your greatest passions and the ones you love. We truly can't think of anything better. Be kind to yourself and keep trying Last but not least, the journey towards minimalism isn't one without obstacles and hiccups along the way. Perfection is a myth, and focusing on improving rather than beating yourself up when you've made a "mistake" is key. The truth is there are going to be times where your home feels cluttered, or when you purchase something that you don't really need. You are human, after all! What matters most, however, is that you don't give up on your quest for simplicity just because you've strayed off the trail. Just start over at the top, breathe in, and keep trying. Learn to turn your focus towards how far you've come, and stop stressing about how far you've got to go. Remember - it's a marathon, not a sprint! And there you have it - six ways you can embrace a more minimalist lifestyle in 2023. Are you aiming to live a more minimal lifestyle at home and in other parts of your life? Be sure to share your personal thoughts, tips, and lessons learned in the comments section below! https://www.huntervalleynews.net.au/story/8026177/how-to-live-a-more-minimalist-lifestyle-in-2023/
  17. OCHA reported that over four consecutive days – from Saturday through Tuesday – 62 trucks travelled through the Rafah crossing with Egypt into Gaza, carrying water, food and medical supplies. Most of this aid has already reached hospitals, ambulances and internally displaced people. However, the daily average of trucks allowed into Gaza prior to the hostilities was about 500. Fuel, which is desperately needed to run back-up generators, remains banned by the Israeli authorities. As a result, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has almost exhausted its fuel reserves and began to significantly reduce its operations. An estimated 1.4 million people in Gaza are internally displaced, with some 629,000 sheltering in 150 UNRWA-designated emergency shelters. Overcrowding is a growing concern, as the average number of displaced people per shelter has now reached 2.7 times their designated capacity. The water supply through the network in areas south of Wadi Gaza has temporarily improved. This happened after UNRWA and UNICEF managed to deliver small quantities of fuel they had retrieved from their existing reserves to key facilities. However, the available fuel in these facilities will be exhausted, likely quite soon, and the supply of piped water is expected to cease again. In a statement issued earlier today, Lynn Hastings, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said the Israeli Defense Forces continue to notify people in Gaza City that those who stay in their homes will put themselves in danger. She stressed that the conduct of armed conflict, anywhere, is governed by international humanitarian law. This means that civilians must be protected and have the essentials to survive, wherever they are and whether they choose to move or stay. Ms. Hastings added that it also means that hostages – all hostages – must be released, immediately and unconditionally. Sudan The Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed deep concern over continued reports of attacks against civilian infrastructure. In a statement, she again implored the parties to the conflict to honour their obligations under international humanitarian law. Ms. Nkweta-Salami warned that the fighting is causing suffering on an unprecedented scale – and not even hospital wards full of sick and wounded children are safe. Since the start of the war in April, the World Health Organization has verified 58 attacks on health care. This includes deadly shelling that struck one of the last functioning hospitals in Omdurman – in Khartoum State – on 9 October. More than 70 per cent of health facilities in conflict areas are now out of service. On Saturday 21 October, the water supply in Omdurman was suspended after the Al Manara treatment centre came under fire. This kind of disruption is extremely worrying, given the ongoing cholera outbreak in Khartoum State and other parts of the country. The UN and humanitarian partners are scaling up the response to the outbreak, including surveillance efforts. More than 1,600 suspected cholera cases – including 67 related deaths – have been reported in Sudan. Meanwhile, the number of people at risk of acute watery diarrhoea is estimated at more than 3 million through the end of the year. https://www.unocha.org/news/todays-top-news-occupied-palestinian-territory-sudan
