  1. It's the battle of singles.20-year-old Iman Fandi, who recently announced her signing with Universal Music, is releasing her single 'Timeframe' today. So is Nathan Hartono – since the release of the singer-songwriter's last English single 'Dig Deep' back in August 2020, he's dropping another English track titled 'I'm Fine' today.Written by Hartono and produced by Singaporean producer Myrne, 'I’m Fine' takes a different twist from Hartono's usual singer-songwriter style, venturing into the electronic sonic realm with ‘80s synth-wave styling.Says Hartono, “‘I’m Fine’ stems from me wanting to give a more succinct answer to the question ‘How Are You?’. In my head, every time someone asks me this question, I want this song to play for them instead. Because I think it’s such a loaded question, that requires so much context and understanding that just cannot be achieved in a short social exchange. And I think we got this question a lot in 2020. So, we just say ‘I’m Fine,' when there’s always so much more to that story.”Hartono also shares more on his first-time experience working with Myrne and the ‘80s inspired synth-wave direction, “Something about the sounds and beats from that era brings me an indescribable comfort. I just missed the ‘80s but my ‘90s childhood were littered with its remnants. It reminds me of a much simpler time, when I could actually tell someone ‘I’m Fine’ and probably mean it.Nathan Hartono. (PHOTO: Jayden Tan)Nathan Hartono. (PHOTO: Jayden Tan)"I also had a lot of fun watching Manfred work in the studio. It was very satisfying to be able to verbally describe a sound I want to achieve, and then have him essentially conjure it from nothing. It’s magical.”True to the song’s thematic backstory, Nathan also conceptualised the cover artwork as a visual representation of the struggles of keeping a positive outlook despite the dark internal conflict. The cover photo is taken by Singaporean photographer Jayden Tan, who will also take the directorial helm on the track’s accompanying music video. Due out in mid-March, the music video is set to be another visual delight with treatment based on the premises of the single artwork. For those keen to catch the singer-songwriter in action, catch Nathan’s performance at the Disney+ Launch livestream coming to all major free-to-air TV channels and online at all Disney+ digital platforms on 24 February, 8pm. For more information, visit will also be performing for two sold-out shows with the Ding Yi Music Company at the Happy Chinese New Year Concert 2021 happening on 27 February at the China Cultural Centre Theatre, Level 4. 3. A poster on the Chinese Bilibilli forums has managed to grab one of Intel's (yet unreleased) Rocket Lake SKUs, the Core i5-11500, and focused exclusively on benchmarking the chips integrated graphics. The chip comes with Intel's most powerful desktop iGP to date, the UHD 750 which promises to be significantly faster than its predecessors.According to the latest scuttlebutt, Intel will offer two Xe iGP variants for Rocket Lake-S. One configuration consists of the UHD Graphics 750 (GT1) engine with 32EUs, and the other is a less powerful variant called the UHD Graphics 730 (GT1) with 24 EUs. Luckily we get to see the performance of the more powerful UHD 750 graphics today. The tester ran 3DMark TimeSpy on both the Core i5-11500 and the Core i5-10400, the Rocket Lake chip managed a score of 11500 points and 10400 points for the older Comet Lake part.also showcased League of Legends and CSGO gameplay, and most of the time the frame for both games was above 100FPS at a resolution of 1080P, which is very respectable for an integrated graphics chip. But Intel is not done with Xe graphics, there are also rumors that Intel's 12th Gen Core architecture, Alder Lake, (Tweeted by @Komachi) will receive an upgraded Intel Xe chip with 96EUs. This would theoretically triple the performance of Rocket Lake's UHD 750 graphics. It's great to see Intel getting competitive again with its integrated graphics performance. Hopefully the company will continue to keep increasing the performance of its IGPs with each new generation, which would be a nice change of pace from the multiple rounds of Gen9-based chips.
  4. Bungie has certainly tried plenty of new things to keep things fresh for Destiny 2 players. The arrival of the Destiny 2: Beyond Light expansion definitely did not hold back. Half of the game’s worlds were vaulted. However, it also meant the return of the Cosmodrome from the first Destiny. For Bungie, it would serve as a perfect entry point for the new player experience. That is a good start, but for fans who want more, Bungie is not making the Cosmodrome a priority in Destiny 2 moving forward.Explaining in a blog post, Bungie shared that the region is done for now. For Destiny 2, about half of the Cosmodrome returned. The team’s aim was to bring it up to par with the the Year 1 version of the location found in the original game. Yet, Bungie was never specifically clear about what that content would entail. That may come as disappointing news to certain fans, as the Cosmodrome is more than just nostalgia for some of them. Rather than rebuild the Cosmodrome for Destiny 2, Bungie wants to focus on creating new content and new worlds. This was a choice to be made. Either the focus could remain on the Cosmodrome, or it could shift to new experiences for Year 4 and beyond. Bungie chose the latter.Bungie definitely did not want to lead the fans on, however. The developer acknowledged that it should have set the expectations right straight from the start. With both the Devil’s Lair and Fallen S.A.B.E.R strikes back in Destiny 2, there will be no plans to add more to the Cosmodrome. That said, the nature of the Destiny Vault may one day see more Cosmodrome content. After all, it exists to allow Bungie to cycle content in and out from Destiny 2. What locations will be vaulted, and what might be unvaulted, remains to be seen.Nevertheless, in my eyes, new content is always good. The Cosmodrome may have been missed, but Destiny 2 has new worlds on the horizon with the
Tohtoročný veľtrh Canton Fair zaznamenal významné trendy v oblasti produktov s inováciami v oblasti dizajnu, funkcií, remeselného spracovania a materiálov. 6. The Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated £500 million to UK local authorities for essential road maintenance - enough to fill in 10 million potholes. The investment comes from the £2.5 billion Potholes Fund, which will provide £500m annually from until 2024/2025, as detailed in chancellor Rishi Sunak’s 2020 budget in March last year.According to the DfT, the average pothole costs around £50 to fill in. This dedicated fund, it said, will go towards “making thousands of local roads both safer and easier to drive and cycle on”.In total, the DfT has allocated more than £1.1 billion to national road maintenance over the course of 2021/2022.Transport minister Baroness Vere said: “We know potholes are more than just a nuisance: they can be dangerous to drivers and cyclists alike and cause damage to thousands of vehicles every year.“The funding allocated today will help councils ensure roads in their area are kept up to standard and that the potholes that blight road users can be dealt with promptly.”The government has recently stepped up its financial support package for UK road infrastructure, pledging £27bn - the largest investment yet - to road maintenance, operations and renewal as part of the Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS2).By 2050, there are planned to be 20 new road connections for UK ports and airports, more than 100 new motorway junctions and 4000 miles of new road.
  7. Norton AntiVirus Plus is the most basic of Norton’s antivirus offerings. The Norton 360 suite comes with more bells and whistles, such as access to a VPN, dark web monitoring and the ability to block unauthorized webcam access on a PC. Norton 360 Deluxe enables users to protect up to five devices, while Norton 360 with LifeLock Select adds increased identity theft protection, such as credit monitoring. As the most basic Norton security option, Norton AntiVirus Plus is also the most affordable - about half the cost of Norton 360 Deluxe. Our dedicated guide on Norton plans will help you choose between the three. What devices can I use Norton AntiVirus Plus on?Norton Antivirus Plus can be used on a Mac or PC, but it only provides support to one computer. If you’re looking to protect multiple computers in a household, you’ll need to purchase a Norton AntiVirus Plus license for each individually or, much more sensibly, upgrade to Norton 360 Deluxe.Norton AntiVirus Plus is not compatible with smartphones or tablets. Norton AntiVirus Plus comes with the standard features of an entry-level antivirus package, as well as quite a few extras:Antivirus scanningNorton AntiVirus Plus enables you to scan your computer for malware, spyware, ransomware, and viruses. It offers a Quick Scan option or a comprehensive Full System Scan, as well as the ability to scan custom locations to find and remove threats.Online protectionNorton AntiVirus Plus detects and blocks malicious URLs, keeping you secure when browsing online. While Norton’s Safe Web browser extension is available for free, Norton AntiVirus Plus will also protect you from malicious links system-wide, such as in PDFs.Smart firewallNorton AntiVirus Plus’s Smart Firewall feature helps prevent unwanted access to your files by alerting you whenever a suspicious program is attempting to connect to the internet.Password managerRe-using the same weak passwords can pose a huge security risk. Norton AntiVirus Plus offers a password manager that enables you to create unique, strong passwords for each of your accounts without having to remember them all.Cloud backupNorton AntiVirus Plus comes with 2GB of cloud storage to back up important files in case of a ransomware attack. You can schedule backups to the cloud to run automatically, or you can manually run a backup whenever you please. You can also choose the files and folders that are backed up. 2GB isn’t much storage, but the feature also enables you to back up files to a local drive.Virus protection promiseIf your device does become infected with a virus while running Norton AntiVirus Plus, you may be eligible for a refund. How good is Norton AntiVirus Plus?Norton AntiVirus Plus is a solid choice for anyone looking to secure their computer and easily earns its place among our top rated Windows 10 antivirus programmes.Even though Norton AntiVirus Plus is the least advanced of Norton’s offerings, it comes with plenty of extra features, like the Smart Firewall and the ability to back up files to the cloud or a local drive. And as the cheapest Norton plan, it’s good value. However, all those features make the Norton AntiVirus Plus interface a bit confusing to navigate. It might take some adjustment before you are able to easily find the features you’re looking for.In our Norton AntiVirus Plus review testing, it successfully blocked most of our simulated malware early and before it could infect our hard drive. However one ransomware test had mixed results: the threat was successfully caught, but it had already encrypted some files.Still, it’s a positive sign that Norton AntiVirus Plus was able to block the threat. Overall, Norton AntiVirus Plus is a quality security suite at an affordable price.
  8. Do you remember the Mac vs PC commercials from the mid-2000s? While Microsoft and Apple may have become increasingly buddy-buddy since then, with Windows working on Mac and Mac ceding basic productivity app dominance to Microsoft Office, that doesn’t mean the war between Mac and PC isn’t still raging. The fighters are just different.Intel's new ad campaign is taking aim at Apple by promoting PC heavily, a continuation of the company’s recent claims that Intel performs better than Apple’s own M1 chip. While Intel has historically been happy to provide Apple chips in the past, Apple’s decision to move to its own, Arm-based chips seems to have changed Intel’s tune about the company’s entire product lineup.Intel’s attack campaign has been running on Twitter and across various websites since early February under #GoPC, and makes such biting remarks as “If you can power a rocket launch and launch Rocket League, you’re not on a Mac.” Rocket League was delisted for Mac early last year.Only a PC can power scientists and gamers alike. #GoPCFebruary 10, 2021Of course, Mac’s substandard gaming ecosystem has been known pretty much since the first Macintosh, and that hasn’t stopped Intel from supporting Apple before. Perhaps more harsh is Intel’s snipe at Apple’s refusal to put a touchscreen on its Macbooks, an oft-requested feature that’s become commonplace on similar PC laptops.Only a PC offers tablet mode, touch screen and stylus capabilities in a single device. #GoPCFebruary 2, 2021You could read this as Intel standing behind its new mobile-first Evo certification program, which doesn’t require a touchscreen but is built on mobile-first convenience features that touchscreen laptops frequently pass. And again, Intel happily supplies chips to PCs that don’t pass Evo spec as well.Intel's also commissioned video for the Go PC campaign, including Tech reviewer Jon Rettinger, whose Intel-sponsored video points out that PC laptops have standard USB ports, touchscreens, and eGPU support, and can easily run with multiple external displays.Of course, Mac fans are having their own fun with this campaign, including this series of rebuttal images from graphic designer Alex.pic.twitter.com/Igbsxwgq65February 12, 2021And, of course, a reference to the KFConsole that pokes fun at the heat generated by Intel CPUs.Only Intel processors run so hot they can serve as PC and a fried chicken warmer in a single device. #GoPC pic.twitter.com/hk0MchQ5gYFebruary 12, 2021The PC and Mac war is unlikely to come to an end in our time (I’m a proud dual-citizen), although it’s an interesting look at the marketplace to see a formerly neutral party take a side. With Apple moving to its own silicon, Intel is now synonymous with PC.
  9. Last month’s offerings from Humble Bundle were a mishmash of various titles. For the February 2021 Humble Choice, we also see a little bit of something for everyone. Endless Space 2 and Valkyria Chronicles 4 are two big games that are part of the list. We’ve also got Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, Outward, Valfaris, and many others. As usual, Classic and Premium subscribers can grab all the games in February 2021’s Humble Choice. Other types of plans, meanwhile, have a limit as to the number of games that can be obtained.Humble Choice: February 2021 – Endless Space 2, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Trine 4, and OutwardEndless Space 2 is a 4X strategy game set in space. In it, you’ll be guiding your chosen faction as you discover new technologies, build colonies, fight worthy foes, and explore the dark unknown. Originally released in 2017, it got better over time thanks to a few tweaks and DLCs. The one included in February 2021’s Humble Choice is Endless Space 2: Digital Deluxe Edition which contains the base game, soundtrack, and cosmetic skins.Valkyria Chronicles 4, meanwhile, released in 2018. While it was originally available as a PS4 title in Japan, it eventually made its way to PCs worldwide in the same year. Tim McDonald even cited that the PC version/port is “really solid” in a technical review. Fast forward to 2019 and Steam owners were treated to a free upgrade to Valkyria Chronicles 4: Complete Edition. This version has the base game and all six DLCs. This is also the version that’s part of the February 2021 Humble Choice.Another game you can pick up is Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. This is the latest installment of the franchise, one that’ll have you adventuring in colorful 2.5D landscapes. Steven Wong enjoyed a preview of it back in 2019 and, since then, it’s received glowing reviews on Steam.Likewise, Outward is also part of the list. This open-world RPG has a few survival mechanics. Unfortunately, Andrew Farrell wasn’t too impressed by it when he reviewed the game. If you decide to grab it, you’ll get the base game and The Soroboreans DLC. There are more games that are part of February 2021’s Humble Choice. There’s Valfaris, an action-packed 2D platformer that’s truly “heavy metal” owing to its soundtrack and gameplay. There’s also Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the Forest, a visual novel with lots of storyline variations and multiple endings. It might be something you’re keen on trying, especially since the latest title based on the tabletop RPG — Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood — was disappointing and forgettable. The remaining options are The Wild Eight, Train Station Renovation, Lovecraft’s Untold Stories, Iris and the Giant, and Boomerang Foo. You can check out all of these via Humble Bundle’s official site.

One day after receiving her first dose of Moderna’s Covid vaccine, Luz Legaspi, 72, woke up with bruises on her arms and legs, and blisters that bled inside her mouth. She was hospitalized in New York City that day, Jan. 19, with a severe case of immune thrombocytopenia — a lack of platelets, a blood component essential for clotting. The same condition led to the death in January of Dr. Gregory Michael, 56, an obstetrician in Miami Beach whose symptoms appeared three days after he received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Treatments failed to restore his platelets, and after two weeks in the hospital he died from a brain hemorrhage. It is not known whether this blood disorder is related to the Covid vaccines. More than 31 million people in the United States have received at least one dose, and 36 similar cases had been reported to the government’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, VAERS, by the end of January. The cases involved either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, the only two authorized so far for emergency use in the United States.ADVERTISEMENTContinue reading the main storyBut the reporting system shows only problems described by health care providers or patients after vaccination, and does not indicate whether the shots actually caused the problems.Unlock more free articles.Create an account or log inOfficials with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that they were looking into the reports, but that so far, rates of the condition in vaccinated people did not appear higher than the rates normally found in the U.S. po[CENSORED]tion, so the cases could be coincidental. Overall, the vaccines are considered safe. A small number of severe allergic reactions have been reported, but they are treatable, and the rates are in line with those reported for other vaccines, regulators say.In a statement, Pfizer said: “We take reports of adverse events very seriously,” and added that it was aware of thrombocytopenia cases in vaccine recipients.ImageDr. Gregory Michael in a photo posted to Facebook by his wife.Dr. Gregory Michael in a photo posted to Facebook by his wife.Credit...via FacebookThe statement also said: “We are collecting relevant information to share with the F.D.A. However, at this time, we have not been able to establish a causal association with our vaccine.”ADVERTISEMENTContinue reading the main storyModerna also provided a statement, which did not address the question of the platelet disorder, but said the company “continuously monitors the safety of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine using all sources of data” and routinely shares safety information with regulators.Hematologists with expertise in treating immune thrombocytopenia said they suspected that the vaccine did play a role. But they said that cases after vaccination were likely to be exceedingly rare, possibly the result of an unknown predisposition in some people to react to the vaccine by developing an immune response that destroys their platelets. The disorder has occurred, rarely, in people who received other inoculations, particularly the measles-mumps-rubella one.“I think it is possible that there is an association,” Dr. James Bussel, a hematologist and professor emeritus at Weill Cornell Medicine who has written more than 300 scientific articles on the platelet disorder, said in an interview. “I’m assuming there’s something that made the people who developed thrombocytopenia susceptible, given what a tiny percentage of recipients they are.”He added: “Having it happen after a vaccine is well-known and has been seen with many other vaccines. Why it happens, we don’t know.”Dr. Bussel said it was important to share information about the cases, because severe thrombocytopenia can be serious, and physicians need to know how to treat it. Sometimes the condition resists standard therapies, and if very low platelet counts persist, the patient faces an increasing risk of severe bleeding and even brain hemorrhage. He and a colleague, Dr. Eun-Ju Lee, have submitted an article to a medical journal on 15 cases in Covid vaccine recipients they identified by searching the government’s database or by consulting with other physicians treating patients. The report provides information about treatments and urges doctors to report cases. It also notes that it is too soon to tell whether the affected patients will have lasting recoveries, or recurrences of the platelet problem.ImageMs. Legaspi, right, in a photo taken by her daughter that shows bruising and bleeding under the skin caused by the lack of platelets.Ms. Legaspi, right, in a photo taken by her daughter that shows bruising and bleeding under the skin caused by the lack of platelets. People can have low platelets without symptoms, and it is possible that in some, a vaccine reaction could drop the level further, to a point where it becomes apparent by causing bruises or bleeding, Dr. Bussel said.ADVERTISEMENTContinue reading the main storyHe has been a paid consultant to Pfizer, not on vaccines but for a drug for the platelet disorder.Dr. Jerry L. Spivak, an expert on blood disorders at Johns Hopkins University, also said the connection to the vaccine appeared real, but predicted that cases would be exceedingly rare and called them “idiosyncratic,” perhaps related to underlying traits in individual patients. The Coronavirus Outbreak ›Latest UpdatesUpdatedFeb. 13, 2021, 1:19 p.m. ET1 hour ago1 hour agoMontana becomes the latest state to undo its mask order. After China warned against Lunar New Year travel, millions apparently stayed home.Vaccinations are picking up in the United States, but big challenges remain. The cases are not a reason to avoid Covid vaccination, doctors say. The risk of serious illness from the coronavirus is much greater than the risk of developing this rare condition, and the vaccines are crucial for controlling the pandemic.Ms. Legaspi’s daughter said the last thing that she and her mother wanted to do was create fear of the Covid vaccines. Both women still believe strongly in the need for them, despite Ms. Legaspi’s illness, her daughter said. The daughter asked, at her employer’s request, that her name not be used.In its most common form, immune thrombocytopenia is an autoimmune disease that affects about 50,000 people in the United States, according to a support group for patients. The condition develops when the immune system attacks platelets or the cells that create them, for unknown reasons. It sometimes follows a viral illness, and can persist for months or become chronic and last for years. It is generally treatable. Professional groups have advised that patients with the disorder be vaccinated for Covid, but after

  12. has added a new version of its all-important ID 3 to UK price lists, bringing the car's base price down without reducing the claimed range. The ID 3 Pro electric motor option, available on Life, Business and Family trim levels, reduces the base price from the launch Pro Performance powertrain's £29,990 to £28,670, inclusive of the government's plug-in car grant. It puts out 143bhp and 199lb ft of torque, which, VW proudly states, is 11lb ft more than the venerable 148bhp 1.5 TSI petrol engine offers in models such as the Golf. The 0-62mph sprint is taken care of in 9.6sec.The claimed range is 260-263 miles, depending on which of the three trim options is specified. A WLTP energy consumption figure of 4.2 miles per kWh is also listed. The lower powertrain still retains the ability to charge to 80% in 35min via a 100kW CCS charger. The more potent ID 3 Pro Performance powertrain uses a 201bhp electric motor and 58kWh battery. It promises 0-62mph in 7.3sec and a range of up to 263 miles - a figure that reduces slightly as you move up through the six variants because of weight-increasing kit additions and bigger wheels.Autocar's Volkswagen ID 3 2020 reviewBase ID 3 Life features cloth seats with integrated armrests, an infotainment package that includes a 10.0in touchscreen with Discover Pro navigation, Bluetooth and DAB radio, and a solely black interior. It also has the Comfort package, with electric folding mirrors featuring a projection light, an auto-dim rear-view mirror and rain-sensing wipers, heated seats and a heated wheel. As with all variants, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, Car2X connected tech, front and rear parking sensors and 18in wheels or larger also feature. ID 3 Business (£33,720) adds to that tally the Design package, with LED matrix headlights and LED rear lights with Dynamic Light Assist and lock/unlock animations, an LED strip running between the headlights, multi-colour cabin ambient lighting and tinted rear windows. It also includes the Assistance package, with a rear-view camera, keyless entry and illuminated door handles.ID 3 Family (£34,650) builds on that kit roster with two-zone climate control, a variable boot floor and a 130cm-long panoramic sunroof. Alternatively, ID 3 Style ditches the first two features and costs £34,180.Next up, ID 3 Tech (£36,190) adds to Style trim with an augmented reality head-up display and upgraded sound system, plus safety kit such as Travel Assist, Side Assist and Emergency Assist.Topping the range of 58kWh models is the ID 3 Max (£38,220), combining the features from the Family and Tech models, plus 12-way electric front seats with lumbar support and a massaging function. Sports suspension and progressive steering are also included. But the range flagship is Tour spec (£39,290), which, chiefly, brings along the ID 3 Pro S powertrain option. It puts out the same 201bhp as other launch models but a 77kWh battery brings the range up to 336 miles. The 0-62mph time rises to 7.9sec with this fitted, but the maximum DC charging rate increases from 100kW to 125kW. That means a 30-minute rapid charge can add up to 217 miles of range. The Tour spec is also the only model that doesn't ride on 18in wheels as standard, with 19in wheels fitted in regular guise and 20in wheels optional. All other models also have the option of 19in or 20in wheels.Further options include six exterior colours and three interior colour combinations, alongside extras such as a heat pump and bike carrier.Volkswagen is quoting an energy consumption figure (like miles per gallon on combustion engine cars) of 4.2 miles per kWh for the Pro Performance and 4.1 miles per kWh for the Pro S.The first examples of these ID 3 variants will arrive at the end of the month. As with the limited-run First Edition models already being delivered to early adopters, Volkswagen claims that the entire production and delivery process is carbon neutral, even including the shipping.Following the Pro model an even cheaper, 45kWh Pure battery is expected to be offered with outputs of 125bhp and 148bhp, while the largest, 77kWh Pro S battery will use the 201bhp motor. Because of the extra weight of the battery, the Pro S model will be offered with a four-seat layout only.Prices for the ID 3 in the UK could eventually start from below £27,500 before the government grant when the entry-level 45kWh Pure version is brought to market.

  14. When you can't supply enough of the latest and greatest graphics cards to the market, it's time to heat up some of the old-time bestsellers. Nvidia has confirmed to PCWorld that the company is effectively resupplying older Turing and Pascal GPUs to its board partners to rekindle the GeForce RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti. With this measure, Nvidia hopes to cushion the ongoing graphics card shortage. There are two specific GeForce graphics cards that are in the conversation: the more recent GeForce RTX 2060 and the four-year old GTX 1050 Ti. It's easy to understand why Nvidia strategically chose the aforementioned models if we take a quick look at the latestDespite launching in 2014, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti has continued to be a fan favorite on Steam. The Pascal-based graphics card currently ranked second on the Steam charts with a 7.07% utilization rate. The GeForce RTX 2060, on the other hand, is in the fifth position with an usage base of 3.72%.Besides being po[CENSORED]r choices among gamers, the GeForce RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti are on older process nodes, meaning that are cheaper to produce. With the recent rumor of a GDDR6 shortage, the GeForce RTX 1050 Ti would help alleviate the pressure on Nvidia's GDDR6 inventory. Furthermore, the two GeForce graphics cards aren't attractive for cryptocurrency miners so it is more likely they will get into the hands of the average person. The GeForce RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti debuted at $349 and $139, respectively. However, it's unclear what prices we will see them at now. Custom GeForce RTX 2060 graphics cards are presently selling for between $700 and $1,200, while the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is going for $200 to $700. The graphics cards are in stock at a few retailers now, implying that Nvidia's restock has already started. However, we don't know just how much supply Nvidia is providing to its partners to see whether it'd would impact the current pricing. Additionally, the focus falls on the retailers on whether they are willing to sell the GeForce RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti at reasonable prices.
  15. has risen from the dead and is heading towards a release thanks to two new developers taking on the project. The title, based on a massive battle during the Iraq War, will be headed by Victura Games and Highwire Games.Originally announced by Atomic Games in 2009, Six Days in Fallujah was swiftly canceled by its publisher, Konami. At the time, Konami said that the cancellation was due to an outpouring of negative feedback. Here we are though, 11 years later and Six Days in Fallujah has two new teams working on it and a release window of this year.In some way, Atomic Games is still one of the developers working on the release of Six Days in Fallujah. Victura. The developer behind the game’s revival, was founded in 2016 by former Atomic Games CEO Peter Tamte. Assisting in development is Highwire Games, which was founded by a group of Bungie veterans including Jaime Griesemer and Marty O’ Donnel, the former audio director and composer for the Halo franchise.Time for a history lessonThe topic of Six Days in Fallujah isn’t exactly a small one, but some may have forgotten about it. The game takes place in 2004 during the second battle for Fallujah, a large city in Iraq. After the fall of Saddam Hussein, there was a massive power vacuum in Iraq, leading to instability and the rise of terrorist cells. One such cell should sound familiar, Al Qaeda. The infamous terrorist group swiftly took over Fallujah following the death of Hussein. While in control of the city, four American private military contractors were killed by Al Qaeda, with their bodies broadcast. In retaliation, the U.S decided a full-scale attack on Fallujah was required.Instead of following the entire attack, Six Days in Fallujah will highlight the feelings surrounding the American-led operation. Working with U.S veterans that were in Fallujah, Victura will try to create a realistic image of the battle. “Sometimes the only way to understand what’s true is to experience reality for yourself,” said former Marine Sergeant Eddie Garcia, one of the veterans that is assisting in the game’s development. So far, there’s no solid release date for Six Days in Fallujah. However, it is set to release sometime this year for both PC and consoles. More details on the game will be released in the coming weeks.
  16. In case there was any doubt about what we'd remember 2020 for, Collins English Dictionary has helpfully reminded us -- opting to name "lockdown" its word of the year. The term, a once-obscure noun that has wormed its way into many of our conversations recently, was recognized by the linguistic authority after its meaning evolved globally due to public health measures against the COVID-19 pandemic."Our lexicographers chose 'lockdown' as Word of the Year because it is a unifying experience for billions of people across the world, who have had, collectively, to play their part in combating the spread of COVID-19," Collins wrote after announcing the award. "It's not a shock to remember that lockdown was originally a piece of prison vocabulary: it's when inmates are confined to their cells because of some disturbance on the wing," it added."2020 is year that the meaning of the word shifted irrevocably: in most people's minds, lockdown is now a public health measure -- its use having increased exponentially since 2019."The dictionary said it registered over a quarter of a million usages of "lockdown" during 2020, up from only 4,000 the previous year. The term first started appearing in news reports in January, when the Chinese city of Wuhan put strict travel restrictions in place to fight a spreading virus.Since then, virtually every major country has enacted some form of lockdown -- with unprecedented social restrictions limiting human interaction and making 2020 a year unlike any other in modern history. The pandemic unsurprisingly influenced many of the shortlisted words that Collins considered. "Coronavirus," "key worker," "furlough" and "social distancing" were all mentioned as the dictionary unveiled its annual choice."BLM," an abbreviation for the Black Lives Matter movement, also made the shortlist, as did "Megxit" -- the term used by parts of the media to refer to Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex's withdrawal from the British royal family. The Collins English Dictionary is currently in its 13th edition, and its publishers highlight words each year that dominated contemporary news events. Last year, "climate strike" was chosen, and in 2018 they opted for "single-use."But this year's choice was an easy one. "It's no surprise that quite a few of the words on Collins Word of the Year 2020 shortlist have one big thing in common: the pandemic," the dictionary wrote."Something that changed everyone's lives so profoundly -- leaving no country or continent untouched -- was bound to have a significant impact on our language."
  17. The referral follows the death of Nargis Begum on a stretch of smart motorway on the M1 in South Yorkshire.Today a Doncaster coroner held a pre-inquest review hearing for Mrs Begum’s case, during which she decided that there was “more than sufficient evidence” for the charge to have “proper scrutiny by the CPS,” as quoted by Civil Engineer magazine.Begum was killed in September 2018 after her car broke down near Woodall Services on the M1. She exited the vehicle after calling for help and was hit by her own car after it was impacted by another vehicle.Coroner Nicola Mundy made her decision on the basis of how long the stationary vehicle went undetected. She noted that Begum’s car was hit 16 minutes after it broke down and that it took six minutes for warning lights to be lit above the carriageway.Another key factor was reports of previous near accidents on smart motorways, where 38 people, including Begum, have been killed in the last five years.Munday said: "I will invite the CPS to review this matter and undertake any investigations they deem necessary to enable them to take the decision as to whether or not criminal charges are appropriate in this case."In defence of Highways England, lawyer Nicholas Chapman said: "The fact that Highways England once placed a hard shoulder on the road does not mean they are under a general common law duty to do so.“There can be no assumption that Highways England irrevocably assumes responsibility to provide hard shoulders on all motorways for all time. There is no duty of care so the case for corporate manslaughter falls at the first hurdle."Edmund King, president of the AA, said: “This is a significant moment for ‘smart’ motorways and highlights many failings, previously raised by the AA, that should have been spotted before the first fatalities, and clearly need urgent action.“We will await the CPS conclusions in due course, but this decision will once again raise serious questions regarding the permanent removal of the hard shoulder.”The news of the CPS referral follows months of high-profile scrutiny of smart motorways. Last month, a YouGov poll found that most British people opposed the roads, with 64% considering them less safe than conventional motorways with hard shoulders. This culminated in the admission by transport secretary Grant Shapps in February that smart motorways are “anything but”. Despite this, however, he has ruled out their removal.
  18. Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout (PC, Switch [reviewed], PS4, PS5) Developer: Gust Co. Ltd. Publisher: Koei Tecmo Released: January 26th, 2021 MSRP: $59.99 was my introduction to the long-running Atelier series. And while I definitely enjoyed it, it didn’t leave enough of an impact for me to run with it and check out the rest of the millions of other games in the series. That’s a big commitment, and that sort of thing terrifies me.However, it did leave me thirsty enough for a sequel which has now arrived in the form of Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy. It’s time to hit the cauldron again and stir up some adventure and also find out if anyone has gained some fashion sense since the last game. Spoiler: they haven’t. It’s been three years since the events of the first Atelier Ryza, and Reisalin “Ryza” Stout’s booty still won’t quit. She’s spent the last three years practicing her alchemy on her own since her friends all ditched her to go to the capital. She’s asked by the local rich guy to investigate some pretty stone, and she’s not sure her experience is enough to figure it out, so she decides to shove off to the city to join her friends.Atelier Ryza 2 is a bit more immediate than its predecessor. Your first battle is just down the road and you have your atelier before the prologue is over. Then you’re ready to get down to cooking up some bombs in your apartment.Like the first game, however, the narrative is a bit of a slow boil. You want adventure, so you go on an adventure sums up the character motivation pretty well. Things just kind of develop from there. There’s a series of ruins around the capital city, and they seem like the perfect place to get yourself killed, so it’s time to plumb them for their secrets and figure out how your flying pet hamster, Fi, connects to everything. If you’re new to the series, you’re probably wondering if you need to play the first Atelier Ryza to enjoy the second, and the answer is: yes, probably. A lot of the game involves meeting up with old friends, and a tonne of the dialogue addresses how much everyone has changed in the intervening years. I’m not saying you couldn’t figure it out from context, it just might not have the same impact. If you’re unfamiliar, the Atelier games are JRPGs with in-depth crafting mechanics. Alchemy, they call it, which is apparently the art of throwing specific ingredients into a pot to create a bridge. While that may just sound like an over-complication of your typical equipment system, it actually adds a layer of progression to the game. As you journey, you gain access to more ingredients that can be used to make better weapons and equipment. It’s important because while you can buy stuff in the stores, nothing compares to what you whip up in your atelier.I had an issue with the previous game’s progression; it felt like there was a lot of starting and stopping as you’d journey until you hit a wall, then return to the atelier to improve your gear or make a key item. That hasn’t exactly changed, but I feel that the game’s progression is a bit more involved. You still go out on adventures and then return to make a nicer shirt, but there’s a firmer divide between the two activities, and that seems to work better. The ruins don’t necessarily unlock in a linear manner. If you focus on side-quests alongside simply beating up unassuming wildlife, you may find that you gain access to new areas without necessarily needing to complete the previous one. This can give you access to new sources of ingredients that allow you to improve your alchemy in tandem with your adventuring. It makes discovering new areas all the more tantalizing as you don’t merely progress the narrative, but also your skills. There’s a dizzying amount of depth to Atelier Ryza 2, some of it completely disposable. For some reason, you can decorate your atelier, but I don’t know why you would. You can also farm ingredients and upgrade shops by selling items, but crafting supplies litter the ground and can be found in every monster’s butt. They do provide alternate methods for you access to some items you otherwise wouldn’t get until later, but whether that’s worth the extra effort is up to you.The crafting itself might take you a bit of time to grasp the little niches to it. Some of this is because it’s not well explained. It has multiple terms for healing, for example, and for the longest time, I thought the only healing item I had access to was grass beans. Near the end of the game, they weren’t doing the job anymore, and I had to experiment to discover that “healing taste” was analogous. Afterward, I created the most amazing desserts ever devised by man and reached the end by frequently force-feeding my teammates donuts. The benefit of this is that you get out of alchemy what you put into it. If you take your time to find the right ingredients, learn the mechanics, and discover new recipes, you can turn your party into an unstoppable force really quick. If you ignore them, however, you might find yourself struggling. As much as I can gripe about the inescapable vortex of dialogue that ambushes you every scene transition, I’ll still admit that I enjoyed the actual game a bit more than the first when it wasn't talking. Maybe not for narrative reasons, but the progression and mechanics just clicked a lot more solidly for me this time. I wound up clocking around 50 hours getting through the game, but I probably could have cut that down if I didn’t spend so much time refining the tastiest donut. However, I probably would have also enjoyed it a lot less.I’m sort of in the same position as I was last time around: I enjoyed the experience, but I’m not exactly in a hurry to go out and pick up the rest of the series. If anything, I’ll wait until the next opportunity I get to slip into Ryza’s incredibly tight shorts. Given the series' typical pace, that will probably be in another year or so.[This review is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher.] CPU: Info CPU SPEED: Dual Core CPU RAM: 4 GB OS: Microsoft Windows 7.1/8/8.1/10 VIDEO CARD: Graphics card with DX10 (shader model 4.0) capabilities PIXEL SHADER: 4.0 VERTEX SHADER: 4.0 FREE DISK SPACE: 3 GB
  19. I tried to log into my Quicken software which I have had on my computer since the ‘90s. My last version was 2014. When it came up, it was a different Quicken screen asking for all types of private information before I could continue with a new version (I believe it was dated 2017). It indicated it was going to subscription only availability and I would have to pay an annual fee. Not wanting to give my info, I backed out of the software to where I could do research on the Quicken site. I found they were going to this method for costs and better service reasons (plus they mention you can still use it for manual entries without going online). Before going back into it to download this new service, I went to my files to try and load my last session of 12/11/20 and found out they somehow went into my Document files and removed all the Quicken software except my QDF file and there is no way to pull up this old data to find my balances, latest checks written, vendors I pay, etc. I do no online work with my Quicken. I use it to write checks, reconcile my statements, etc. (wherein I have to manually input the data required to do so.) How can they (Quicken) access my computer to take these old version files off of my computer without my permission? There has been no notification (to my knowledge) that this was going to happen. Suspicious as I am I ran two different virus programs to verify that I had no viruses, nor malware on my system. I do not understand how someone can go into my computer and remove files without my permission and how/when did they notify customers that this was going to happen. Is this a legal thing for them to do?– Karen H.Crestview, FloridaAnswer: I’m no lawyer, Karen, and I don’t even play one on TV. But I am a software engineer, and a geek, and I can tell you that the way most consumers view software is not the same as the view of the company that produces it. When you purchase software, you are not actually buying the software itself, but rather, a limited license to install and use it, usually within the boundaries of a voluminous End-User License Agreement, also called a EULA. From your viewpoint, someone accessed your files, but from their point of view, the files belong to them. The most likely scenario is that you downloaded a Quicken update, which took it upon itself to remove your current single-PC version, and install the latest and greatest product, which is their new cloud-based subscription service. I would be very surprised if there wasn’t some warning during the process that this was going to occur. Unfortunately, most people have a bad habit of clicking Next-Next-Next without reading what’s being displayed. So, from here the issue gets more complicated. If you accept the premise that your files weren't simply deleted, but were in fact replaced with something that you don't necessarily want, the question morphs into, “How can I run my older version of Quicken?”That’s one of those “it depends” issues. One of the biggest dependencies is the version that you purchased in the first place. Most software has a planned end-of-life built into it when it’s released, and newer versions supplant the old as they come out. To find out the low-down on yours, I offer you this: TinyURL.com/IGTM-0707, which links to an article on the Quicken customer support board entitled “Currently Supported Quicken Products (Discontinuation Policy).” It contains a list of various Quicken products, and the Discontinuation Date. Yours might even pre-date the software on this list, by which you can infer that yours is definitely no longer supported. So, what to do? Well, first of all, I recommend securing your data files, so that no matter what else happens, you have viable data when you come out the other side of this. Make a copy of them on a thumb drive, DVD-R, cloud storage, or whatever you choose. Then, de-install Quicken altogether, and re-install the older version that was working for you. That represents something of a line-in-the-sand that you shouldn’t step over if you don’t want to be put on the subscription service. If you’ve read this column for any substantial length of time, you probably know that I don’t do unsolicited product endorsements. Neither do I normally recommend people away from a product unless I have personal experience, and a good reason to do so. With that caveat out of the way, my final thought is that if this whole subscription model is leaving a bad taste in your mouth, consider whether you should even stay with Quicken. There are other financial software products available, and some of them are even free. Spend some time with Google, and search for “Quicken alternatives.” If you believe the reviews (and I always recommend taking those with a grain of salt) some are even better than the pay-to-use Quicken software. To view additional content, comment on articles, or submit a question of your own, visit my website at ItsGeekToMe.co (not .com!)
  20. By Julie Zhu, Yingzhi Yang and David KirtonChina's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in early-stage talks to sell its premium smartphone brands P and Mate, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said, a move that could see the company eventually exit from the high-end smartphone-making business. The talks between the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker and a consortium led by Shanghai government-backed investment firms have been going on for months, the people said, declining to be identified as the discussions were confidential.Huawei started to internally explore the possibility of selling the brands as early as last September, according to one of the sources. The two sources were not privy to the valuation placed on the brands by Huawei.Shipments of Mate and P Series phones were worth $39.7 billion between Q3 2019 and Q3 2020, according to consultancy IDC.However, Huawei has yet to make a final decision on the sale and the talks might not conclude successfully, according to the two sources, as the company is still trying to manufacture at home its in-house designed high-end Kirin chips which power its smartphones."Huawei has learned there are unsubstantiated rumours circulating regarding the possible sale of our flagship smartphone brands," a Huawei spokesman said. "There is no merit to these rumours whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan."The Shanghai government said it was not aware of the situation and declined to comment further. The potential sale of Huawei's premium smartphone lines suggests the company has little hope that the new Biden administration will have a change of heart towards the supply chain restrictions placed on Huawei since May 2019, the two people said. The Shanghai government-backed investment firms may form a consortium with Huawei's dealers to take over the P and Mate brands, according to the second person, a similar model to the Honor deal. Huawei is also likely to keep its existing P& Mate management team for the new entity, if the deal goes through, the two people said.OVERCOMING U.S. CURBSHuawei, the world's biggest telecoms equipment vendor and No.2 smartphone maker, last November announced the sale of its budget phone brand Honor to a consortium of 30 dealers led by a company backed by the Shenzhen government. The second source said the all-cash sale fetched more than 100 billion yuan ($15.5 billion). Honor declined to comment. The Honor sale was aimed at keeping the budget brand alive, as sanctions slapped on Huawei by the United States had hampered the unit's supply chain and cut off the company's access to key hardware like chips and software such as Alphabet Inc's Google Mobile Services.Huawei may have a similar objective in pursuing the sale of the mobile brands. The two sources said that Huawei's latest plans for the two high-end brands were motivated by insufficient chip supplies.Washington says that Huawei is a national security threat, which Huawei has repeatedly denied. On Friday, Honor indicated that the goal of the spin-off had been reached by announcing it had formed partnerships with chip makers such as Intel and Qualcomm and launched a new phone.Last year, the company's Consumer Business Group Chief Executive Richard Yu said U.S. restrictions meant Huawei would soon stop making Kirin chips. Analysts expect its stockpile of the chips to run out this year.Huawei's HiSilicon division relies on software from U.S. companies such as Cadence Design Systems Inc or Synopsys Inc to design its chips and it outsources the production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which uses equipment from U.S. companies. The P and Mate phone series are among the top players in the higher-end smartphone market in China and compete with Apple's iPhone, Xiaomi Corp's Mi and Mix series and OPPO's Find series. The two brands contributed nearly 40% to Huawei's total sales over the third quarter of 2020, according to market research firm Counterpoint.Analysts have already noted recent insufficient supplies of the flagship P40 and Mate40 series due to a severe components shortage."We expect a continuous decline in sales of P and Mate series smartphones through Q1 2021," said Flora Tang, an analyst at Counterpoint.
  21. Dead Cells: Fatal Falls (Nintendo Switch, PC [reviewed], PS4, Xbox One) Developer: Motion Twin, Evil Empire Publisher: Motion Twin Released: January 26, 2021 MSRP: $4.99 It only took a single (unsuccessful) stab at Dead Cells for me to get back in the swing of things and boy does this game still feel fantastic. Its sense of ferocity and flow is up there with the best of 'em.I didn't just boot up Dead Cells for the heck of it – there are a few new premium levels to check out today. Following the first paid DLC, The Bad Seed, you can now spice up your Dead Cells runs with Fatal Falls. The first level pack was successful right out of the gate, and this next one proves it wasn't a fluke.Fractured Shrines, Undying Shores, and The Mausoleum Fatal Falls goes from one extreme to the other: from an open-air zone littered with traps and perilous platforms (Fractured Shrines) to a rotten rain-soaked cliffside full of enemy-reviving apostates (Undying Shores). The former area serves as a nice break from Dead Cells' denser and more claustrophobic levels, and the latter biome is a classic exercise in never underestimating your opponents. They can gang up!Given where these zones are placed in the grand scheme of Dead Cells, it makes sense that I'd need a few warmed-up attempts to clear them and topple the new sickle-throwing boss – a Scarecrow who proved particularly tricky while I was shaking off the rust. He's meant to be on par with the Time Keeper. It's a challenging fight, one that quickly establishes a familiar pattern at a fair pace before escalating things further and further to catch you off-guard. I dug it! As for the other levels, Fractured Shrines can feel slightly too one-note with its trap-ridden layout, and Undying Shores is deceptively tough; you've gotta stay on top of lantern-wielding summoners who won't hesitate to fill your screen and body you.For what it's worth, I think the trailer is a pretty accurate depiction of the Fatal Falls levels. There's bound to be some overlap as this game continues to grow. That's only natural. I don't think Fatal Falls is quite as fresh as The Bad Seed, but it's a close call. And I have to say, the gear is on-point.In terms of weapons and items, Fatal Falls has a pair of placeable Lightning Rods, poisonous Snake Fangs that let you teleport to foes for quick damage-over-time buildup, a soul-absorbing Ferryman's Lantern, an Iron Staff and Cocoon for parrying, and Scarecrow's Sickles that fly in a crit-inducing arc.I should also mention that you can summon a "pet sword" named Serenade like it's the late '90s again and you're stomping through Dracula's inverted castle. Time to start speccing toward Brutality. I've long felt that the choose-your-route roguelike foundation and slam-stab-roll rhythm of combat in Dead Cells are truly excellent – and that the main path toward improvement would be more levels and more bosses. I'm not a high-level player who's out there carving their way through the later Boss Stem Cells. Instead, I tend to show up when there's significant new content (like DLC) and casually keep tabs on the ebb and flow of ongoing balance changes in the meantime. It's a comfortable place to be.I can't say that Fatal Falls will keep Dead Cells at the top of my rotation for all that long – it's bound to be a short-lived resurgence given where I'm at with this game – but I'm perfectly happy as is.A genuinely great game just got a bit more fleshed-out for the right price. That's good enough for me.[This review is based on a retail build of the DLC provided by the publisher.] CPU: Info CPU SPEED: Dual Core CPU RAM: 4 GB OS: Microsoft Windows 7.1/8/8.1/10 VIDEO CARD: Graphics card with DX10 (shader model 4.0) capabilities PIXEL SHADER: 4.0 VERTEX SHADER: 4.0 FREE DISK SPACE: 3 GB
  22. State Bank of India (SBI) chairman Rajnish Kumar on Thursday said that there is enough liquidity available in the system and also interest rates have moderated to a large extent.Speaking at a webinar organized by Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Kumar said that both the RBI and the government have taken measures to bring back the economy, derailed by the pandemic, back on track."The government and the RBI have taken measures to bring back the economy to the path of revival", he said.Kumar said the RBI has been giving calibrated responses quickly and ensured that there is enough liquidity in the system.According to him, interest rates have also moderated to a large extent. He said that the government has taken steps to make direct bank transfers, a lot of emphasis on helping the MSMEs and announced reforms in the areas of agriculture, defense and mining for creating a favorable investment climate."I believe the situation is returning to normal and many businesses are back to normal operating at 70 to 80 percent capacity. Some of them have also started exports", he said.According to him, the rural economy will play a critical role in the revival process. The aviation, tourism, hospitality, services, and construction sectors are the most affected, while agriculture is the least, Kumar said.Regarding the Supreme Court's observation on the moratorium on loans that banks are charging 'interest on interest', Kumar said SBI has filed an application for intervention along with IBA."The matter is sub-judice and better to wait till August", he said.Kumar also said that SBI is not charging higher interest rates for a ratings downgrade. He said, "we cannot imagine the post-COVID situation at the moment and also don't know when it will come."According to him, SBI's liquidity ratio of 143 percent is not an indicator of the fact that the bank is not lending.Regarding SBI, he said that the bank has sanctioned loan applications of two lakh MSMEs under the guarantee emergency credit line. The MSMEs are managing this crisis very well, he said, adding that reassessment of working capital is going on.
  23. NEW DELHI: Girish Karnad's memoir, which was to be translated from Kannada into English by the actor-playwright himself but could only finish a part of it before his death in 2019, will now be out in May after final touches by award-winning translator Srinath Perur."This Life at Play: A Memoir by Girish Karnad" will be released on the director's 83rd birth anniversary on May 19 by Fourth Estate, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.Karnad, considered one of modern India's greatest cultural figures, first published his memoir in Kannada in 2011.Covering the first half of his remarkable life, from growing up in Dharwad and engaging with local theatre, to his education in Mumbai and as a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford, his career as a publisher, his successes and travails in the film industry, and his personal and writerly life, Karnad's inimitable voice shines through it all.The no-holds-barred account provides a glimpse into the life-shaping experiences of this towering figure on India's cultural scene, and a unique window into the India in which he lived and worked."Our father lived through every decade of independent India - his writing and thinking were a mirror of the life of the country, and especially its arts," say his children Radha and Raghu."As we told him all the time, in the later years, his career had to culminate in a memoir reflecting on that journey, and here are those reflections - brought into English in part by Appa himself, and in part by the exceptionally skilful writer and translator Srinath Perur, who was our father's own preference to complete the work," they say.According to Perur, Karnad usually translated his own writing."He had started work on the English translation of his memoirs, but his health did not allow him to give it the time it required, and he called me to ask if I could help him with it.I had not read the Kannada book at the time, but I knew it had been well received by readers, and I knew it had generated some excitement in the media," he says."When I mentioned this to Girish, he said, 'Yes, that is because I say the things that others don't say.' That honesty and plain-spokenness, qualities he was known for in his public life, also run through his book," he says.HarperCollins India Publisher (Literary) Udayan Mitra terms "This Life at Play" an extraordinary account of an extraordinary life - the life of a pioneer and luminary of the literary and cultural world who shaped many of our contemporary perspectives on theatre, film, literature and society, and whose impact will be felt for decades to come.
  24. t’s not easy to single-handedly manhandle a car bonnet. It’s a big panel, making it difficult for your hands to get a grip, and it’s quite heavy. Manoeuvring said panel onto a trolley – the type used at Ikea to carry big flatpacks – is also a challenge when said trolley is resting on a slight slope, this topographical detail revealed by its insistence on rolling down it.This probably comedic scene – I could imagine being watched on CCTV – was to be witnessed at a salvage yard near Southampton on a hot day last summer, with your scribbler unable to request assistance for Covid-19 reasons. The undamaged bonnet was being freed from an expired Rover 75 Tourer for my now lightly damaged 75 saloon. Damaged because a car pulled out in front of me from a side road and my attempts to avoid T-boning this sudden steel impediment were only partially successful. The 75, a 2.5 V6 Connoisseur SE, no less, is a car that I’ve owned for almost five years, after buying it for £800 as a stopgap. So reliable, sumptuous and civilised has it been that I’ve enjoyed 25,000 miles of its 76,000-mile total and plan to keep running it until it’s stopped by an expensive mechanical failure. Which has been staved off so far by regular specialist maintenance and the fact that it’s so well m I hadn’t expected the 75 to be stopped by the offside flank of a white Kia Niro, on the other hand. The visible destruction included the offside front wing, a headlight, an indicator, the front bumper and the bonnet. Behind these items, the damage was unknown. The Kia’s offside doors and rear wing were squashed, but no airbags fired in either car. Details were exchanged, insurers contacted and within days I was offered £700 for the Rover, which predictably was doomed to be an economic write-off once I had furnished pictures. That it was able to drive away from the accident feeling exactly as it had beforehand didn’t seem to figure in the insurance assessor’s calculations.Still, arguing that mine was a top-of-the range example, relatively low mileage and well cared for pushed that to £1000. Could I keep the car, I asked, figuring that I could repair it. I could. I would get £1000 if they took it away or £1000 if I kept it. And I talked them out of recording it as a Category D write-off with non-structural damage, despite its light reshaping. My plan was to do as much dismantling as I could, find used parts and have a bodyshop paint the replacement panels. Buying cheap second-hand parts for a 75 is easy, because many are being broken for spares right now. The youngest 75 is 15 years old, the oldest 22, this being the period when most examples of a model are swept from the streets and crushed. eBay is a great source, as are salvage yards. The cheapest are breakers, who allow you to remove the parts yourself, the aforementioned bonnet costing a mere £30. The front bumper (£90, including indicators and polystyrene energy absorber), wing (£42), headlight (£57), crash bar (£16.50) and slam panel (£28) all came from eBay. The last two items were also damaged, as they’re designed to be in a minor smash. New parts included the bonnet release cables and some fixings, taking the parts total to £363. Painting the gold front bumper, black bonnet and not-quite-theright-blue front wing was way beyond my skills, but an excellent local specialist quoted £650. That included painting the nearside wing, whose lacquer was peeling. He also lined up the fresh panels just so. It looked great.p the fresh panels just so. It looked great. The next day, I deliberately smashed the 75’s front grille. Why? Because it was the only way of accessing the bonnet latch mechanisms, which hadn’t been adjusted for the new slam panel, preventing the bonnet from opening. That added £25, pushing the total bill to £1013, or £13 more than the compensatory cheque. True, it took me about five days to dismantle the Rover’s damaged nose and search for parts, including an enjoyable day at UPickIt (enjoyable if you like scavenging parts for your cars, a process I find strangely satisfying), and reassembling enough of it that I could legally drive it to the paint shop. But it was a mostly enjoyable process, I learned more about how a 75 is constructed and, best of all, saved a perfectly usable car from the crusher. Better still, the Rover looks slightly smarter than it did before the accident. Another triumph for Bangernomics, I think.
