Microsoft is gearing up to roll out a pretty substantial update for Windows 11, 24H2, with the update currently making its way through the final stages of testing. According to recent reports, it will see the end of several long-standing Microsoft products, including Cortana and WordPad, along with a few of Windows 11’s other old features. There is a provisional list of Windows features that are in the process of being deprecated on the official Microsoft Learn blog, although not all of them have a confirmed date. However, Swedish tech news site Sweclocker has shared that the first 24H2 release candidate version is now available via the Windows Insider Program. The final version that will roll out to all Windows 11 users is expected to be released in September or October. We wrote about the announcements of WordPad’s and Cortana’s deprecation a while back, with Cortana giving way to Microsoft’s new all-purpose digital AI assistant, Copilot. Tips is another app that’s going to be absent in this build, along with Step Recorder. Steps Recorder is a built-in Windows assistance tool that has the ability to record user actions and analyze them to help troubleshoot their device. These are just some of the apps and features being sent to the Microsoft Graveyard, but the preview release candidate build also brings new features, as detailed in an official Windows Blogs post. This includes HDR background support, the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives directly in File Explorer, and improvements to Bluetooth connectivity for certain devices. WordPad is a basic text editor that’s been a default application on Windows devices since the 90s, and many people have grown fond of it, especially as an increasing number of familiar apps have become more complex and been injected with often-unwanted AI features. If enough people continue to voice their thoughts and positive sentiments about WordPad, we might see it return as an optional download from the Microsoft Store - like what happened with the Paint app that’s since gone on to have a second life. PCGamer speculates that for most of these apps and features, with the exception of Cortana, perhaps Microsoft doesn’t feel like continuing the upkeep of these apps and would prefer to dedicate those resources elsewhere - a move that might see more users take up Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Some of these features and apps, like Steps Recorder, won’t be especially missed by me, but I do personally hope that Microsoft reconsiders giving WordPad a permanent chop. Doing an Assassin's Creed-style game set in Japan years before Ubisoft decided to make Assassin's Creed Shadows, Sucker Punch delivers a gripping, beautiful, and often memorable samurai epic—one loaded with tense sword fights, brutal assassinations, and plenty of story-telling class. So, yes, I rate the game and recommend you buy and play it if you haven't already, which it seems like plenty of PC gamers have already done. The Director's Cut also includes the Iki Island expansion, so you're getting the full Ghost of Tsushima experience. It does take a bit of time to find its feet, though, and, the early moments are quite slow and regimented. And it's still a four year old game, so despite its PC-specific graphical enhancements, the game's core engine is starting to look a bit dated by modern standards. Bringing a katana to a knife fight It might not be on the bleeding edge, but Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut still delivers a number of improvements over the console edition, including unlocked framerates, support for Nvidia DLSS3, AMD FSR3, and Intel XeSS, as well as compatibility with Nvidia Reflex and image quality-enhancing Nvidia DLAA. On top of that, this version of the game also supports ultrawide (21:9), super Ultrawide (32:9), and even 48:9 Triple Monitor support, meaning the sweeping landscapes of Tsushima really can stretch out to your vision's periphery. There are also a few nice little extras thrown in, too, such as the ability for cinematics to be rendered in real-time, a fact that unlocks Japanese voice language lip sync. This sounds like a small thing, but this is absolutely a game you should play with Japanese audio, be that in Samurai Cinema mode (Japanese language, English subs, full-colour graphics) or Kurosawa (Japanese language, English subs, black and white, film grain heavy visuals) mode. As such, Japanese lip sync in cinematics adds to the immersion massively. As for things that are not included with this PC edition, which I really would like to have seen, the most obvious is real time ray tracing, both in terms of global illumination and in terms of reflections. My experience with the PC version of the Director's Cut Playing the game on my primary rig, which is powered by an Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti, 32GB RAM (DDR4), and an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut ran consistently at over 100 fps at FHD resolution. The RTX 3090Ti is only DLSS2 compatible, too, so I'm confident that if you had a 40-series card from Nvidia you'd likely achieve framerates of over 140fps. This game runs like butter, then, and even if you were using more dated hardware, I'm still very confident you'd get a locked framerate of 60fps or more. That high, stable framerate meant I found much of the combat easier and more natural compared to the console version. It's not quite as brutal and unforgiving as a soulslike, but timing sword counters and parries is key in this game, so the smoothness is a real benefit. It also helped when lining up swift bow shots, especially firing from on horseback, which require a good degree of precision. Swapping out the primary monitor for a 32:9 variant, the sweeping landscapes of Tsushima island do indeed look stunning. Wind rustling through the grasses and trees, shimmering lakes nestling up against war-torn rustic villages, majestic forts and pagodas breaking distant treelines—all seem slightly more real with the wider, perspective-broadening aspect ratio. That said, Ghost of Tsushima remains really rather pretty at any aspect ratio. While I think it's still stunning thanks to its fantastic art direction—something that is absolutely enhanced by the PC version's bells and whistles— there's also no escaping that, four years after its original release, Ghost of Tsushima is not a visual tour-de-force anymore, and its engine allows limited environmental interactivity and, well, realistic clutter. Don't get me wrong, not every game needs Starfield-levels of interactable objects and environmental details, but aside from people, resources and collectibles, this is a pretty static world. It's also a world where, thanks to the lack of ray tracing, there are moments when the lightning looks pretty old hat and flat compared newer open-world third person action-adventure games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While the character models, textures, and lightning aren't quite at 2024 standards, this doesn't hamper the story or the action, with it technically pretty darn faultless. I didn't experience a single crash, either, and the only visual glitch I saw was a distant pagoda not rendering properly once, with its angled rafters appearing to float in the air. A great PC port Sony should replicate Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut on PC is a great all-round port of a very good game, and is now the definitive way to play it. Yes, I'd have liked the options for more modern lighting effects to be enabled, but aside from that, Nixxes, who is responsible for the port, has done a great job here. Australian scientists say they have made the world's first diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a professional female athlete. Studies on the degenerative brain disease, linked to contact sports, are usually carried out on male athletes. The diagnosis was made on the brain of Heather Anderson, an Australian Rules footballer who took her own life last year aged 28. Scientists say the case could be "the tip of the iceberg" for women in sport. CTE causes an increased risk of mental illness and has also been linked to dementia, but can only be diagnosed post-mortem. Scientists believe it is caused by repeated head knocks and concussions, with a study by 13 academic institutions last year finding "conclusive evidence". Research into the condition has been growing in recent years - with more than 300 cases identified in American football alone. In Australia, high-profile male Australian Rules footballers Danny Frawley, Shane Tuck and Polly Farmer were diagnosed with CTE, as was rugby league player-turned-coach Paul Green. But study of CTE in female sports stars has been limited. Ms Anderson's family donated her brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank (ASBB), in the hope of better understanding her death. She played eight professional games in the top-tier Australian Football League Women's (AFLW). She suffered several injuries throughout her career including at least one concussion. A talented defender, she was known for wearing a bright pink helmet during matches before her retirement in 2017. Prof Michael Buckland, who co-authored the study, said Ms Anderson's brain had three clear lesions, including in parts of the organ that regulate movement, problem-solving, memory, language, and behaviour. Prof Buckland told the BBC that people suffering from CTE often experience a wide range of mental health issues, and that Ms Anderson's family had told him "in some ways" the findings "made a lot of sense". "Depression, anxiety, irritability, impulsivity, drug and alcohol use, suicidal thoughts, as well as actions of suicide are common," he said. He added that Ms Anderson's family were grateful for the research and might encourage more studies into how head injuries affect women in sport. "I think [Ms Anderson] is a sentinel case. Clare Nowland was critically injured after police responded to reports she was wandering around the home with a steak knife at about 04:00 last Wednesday. New South Wales Police (NSW) said she died "surrounded by family and loved ones". The officer who Tasered Mrs Nowland has been charged with assault. The 33-year-old senior constable will face court in early July on charges of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault. He remains suspended from duty with pay while investigations continue. Mrs Nowland lived in a care home in the town of Cooma about 114km (71 miles) south of Canberra, Australia's capital city. NSW Police said their thoughts and condolences "remain with those who were lucky enough to know, love, and be loved by Mrs Nowland during a life she led hallmarked by family, kindness and community." Last week, police said she was "armed" with a steak knife. On Friday, they confirmed that she required a walking frame to move and the officer discharged his Taser after she began approaching "at a slow pace". Mrs Nowland is believed to have suffered a fractured skull and a serious brain bleed after falling and hitting her head during the incident. It has prompted calls for a state parliamentary inquiry and the release of police bodycam vision of the confrontation. In a statement, Mrs Nowland's family said she was a "well respected, much loved and a giving member of her local community" and the "loving and gentle-natured matriarch of the Nowland family." Users who want to keep using the Meta-owned platform operating on iOS 10 and 11 will have to update to iOS 12 if they want to keep using the app. This means that iPhone 5 and 5C users will be left behind because iOS 12 is not available on the devices. It’s only fair because these devices are among the oldest Apple iPhones, almost a decade old. They don’t have the latest technology to run certain functions in this day and age. Users can still continue using WhatsApp on iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S, but they will need to update their iOS version to iOS 12. According to WABetaInfo, a lot of users claimed that WhatsApp is dropping support for iOS 10 at the end of the previous year, which according to the publication which first aired the news, was false.
