The Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece 'Saamana' on Thursday took a dig at the Centre for rise in inflation. The editorial said this government came to power on the lines of 'mehngai dayain khaye jaat hai' but the same sword of inflation is over this government. 'Ache din will come when they come but give the normal days back', it said. On one hand there is no employment, on the other there is a fear of losing the current jobs, the editorial said. At the same time rising inflation with which cost of living is rising, the party said in its mouthpiece. It added saying the government should leave other issues and concentrate on controlling this double whammy. If not, then people will pass on these bad days to the government, this should be kept in mind. The editorial said, "The RBI expected rate of inflation in India to be around 4 per cent but it turned out to be high at 7.35 per cent. Adding to this, the growth rate is slipping. Global recession and tensions between the US and Iran are not the only reason for slowdown in India. Even after having a clear mandate, the end of slowdown is not in sight." The party pointed out that everything from necessities like vegetable and grocery to gold-silver is expensive. There are also expectations of oil prices rising in the near future, the party mentioned. "There is an increase in prices of food products at about 15-20 per cent. If the prices rise further, it will make survival of the common man difficult. There will be 16 lakh lesser jobs created. According to a report by 'centre for monitoring Indian Economy', ten states have high unemployment rates out of which six states are governed by the BJP and their allies," the editorial further said.

Actor Joaquin Phoenix is overwhelmed that his film Joker is leading the Oscar nomination pack this year, and says that the Academys encouragement helped ignite and sustain his career. Phoenix turned the story of a mentally unstable loner and failed comedian Arthur Fleck, who picks violence to find calmness in his life, into a blockbuster. "I feel honoured and humbled to have been nominated by my fellow actors. The Academy's encouragement helped ignite and sustain my career and I am incredibly grateful for that support. I'd like to also congratulate my fellow nominees for being recognised for their inspiring performances that have enriched our art form," Phoenix said. Todd Phillips' Joker, an origin story about superhero Batman's biggest enemy Joker, got 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Other categories are: Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Score, Film Editing and Make-up and Hairstyling. "Joker began as an idea, an experiment really - take an 'indie approach' to a studio film by inverting it into a character study to reflect the world around us? Explore what we're seeing and feeling in society, from the lack of empathy to the effects of the absence of love. I am deeply honoured by the overwhelming recognition of the Academy, and I want to thank the genius that is Joaquin Phoenix, and all my incredible collaborators. We are beyond humbled that our peers in the film-making community have embraced the film and its message," Phillips said. The Warner Bros Pictures project has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and has crossed the $ 1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. In fact, the impact is deep as it has sparked conversation around mental health. A follow-up to film is also in the works. Joker composer Hildur Guonadottir earned her first Oscar nomination, and became one of only seven women in the award show's history to be nominated for Best Original Score. "I'm truly honoured and proud to be recognised with an Academy Award nomination for my work on Joker. Being invited into this illustrious group of talent and getting to take part in telling this story means the world to me. Todd Phillips is a master of his craft and it was wonderful to experience how he trusts and empowers his collaborators so they can deliver their best work possible. We see that in the way every element of the film has its space to shine, because he gives each element real weight. The brightest shining of those of course being Joaquin Phoenixs performance, which was simply otherworldly. I'm grateful for having been invited on this journey of a lifetime with them and I congratulate all of my fellow nominees on their nominations," Guonadottir said. Lawrence Sher, Best Cinematography nominee for Joker, says getting an Oscar nomination is a dream come true moment. Sher said: "I'm one of those people that ever since I was a kid I religiously watched the Oscars. Each year I watched it like it's my Super Bowl ordering pizza and filling out brackets with my friends and family. The show always reinvigorates my love for movies and the people who make them and inspires me to keep striving to be better with each project I do. So to wake up this morning and get this nomination from the Academy is beyond special. I'm so happy for all my fellow nominees in Cinematography, it's quite an impressive list of craftspeople." "The 11 nominations for Joker makes me particularly proud, that the Academy members recognised so many for our work on this film and Todd's three nominations are the most exciting of all - it all starts with him."

At least four soldiers were injured after several rockets hit the Balad Air Base in Iraq, military sources have said. According to the initial reports, seven mortar bombs fell on Sunday inside Iraq's Balad Air Base which was hosting the United States troops. No casualty has been reported so far. The military sources said the mortar bombs fell in the Balad Air Base's runway, located 80 km north of Baghdad. At least four Iraqi soldiers have wounded in the attack on the Balad Air Base. A majority of United States airmen stationed at the Al-Balad airbase north of Baghdad had already left, the military sources said, following tensions between the US and Iran over the last two weeks. Military bases hosting United States troops have been subject to volleys of rocket and mortar attacks in last few days after tensions between the US and Iran escalated following the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. The rocket attacks at the Balad Air Force Base have come more than a week after a deadly American strike in Baghdad which killed top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and a few days after Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles targeting at least two bases where US military and coalition forces' are stationed in Iraq. After the death of General Qassem Soleimani, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed "severe revenge" after the United States killed General Qassem Soleimani, the chief of Iran's elite Quds Force, in an airstrike at the Baghdad airport on Friday. "With him gone, God willing, his work and his path will not be stopped, but severe revenge awaits the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood and other martyrs' in last night's incident. All enemies should know that the jihad of resistance will continue with a doubled motivation, and a definite victory awaits the fighters in the holy war," Khamenei said in a statement telecast by the state TV. Taking responsibility for the attack on two Iraq bases housing US military on January 8, Iran said it had carried out and "concluded" its reprisal over the killing of top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani when it targeted US forces in Iraq with a missile strike. "Iran took and concluded proportionate measures in self-defence" targeting a base from which a "cowardly armed attack against our citizens and senior officials" was launched, said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Twitter. The Iranian foreign minister, however, asserted that the country does not seek "escalation or war" but, "will defend ourselves against any aggression". Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attacks were a "slap in the face" of the United States. In his first reaction after Iran's missile attack on two American bases in Iraq, United States President Donald Trump insisted that "all is well". United States President Donald Trump tweeted, "All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far!..." While the Iranian state television claimed that "at least 80 terrorist US soldiers" were killed in the strikes, Donald Trump, in his statement, maintained that the country suffered no casualty in the attack.

With police still unable to make arrests in connection with Sunday's rampage on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, India Today's Special Investigation Team has nailed the possible assailants, who, by their own admission, had engineered the assault on the Left-leaning students with the support from the right-wing groups outside. As outrage spread across the nation over the January 5 violence, India Today's SIT caught one of the main attackers on camera, who confessed that he mobilised the mobs from within and outside the campus. A first-year student of the French degree program at the JNU, Akshat Awasthi identified himself in footage of Sunday's attack -- and as an activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Akshat Awasthi, the JNU's online records show, is a resident of the Kaveri hostel on campus. Armed with a stick, his face covered with a helmet, Awasthi showed the video and said he could be seen rushing through the hostel corridors in maddening rage and knocking anything and anyone that came his way. "What did you have in your hand?" an India Today undercover reporter asked Awasthi. "It was a stick, sir. I pulled it out from a flag lying near [the] Periyar [hostel]." As the mystery deepened over the identity of the attacker's organisation, the self-identifying assailant revealed his affiliation and the motive behind the raid. Awasthi said the attack occurred in retaliation for an assault allegedly perpetrated by the Left students on Periyar hostel the same day earlier. "It was a reaction to their action." Asked how he was able to organise mobs in a matter of hours, Awasthi named office-bearers of the ABVP from a separate campus outside. "He's an organizational secretary of the ABVP. I called him. Left-wing students and teachers were holding a meeting at Sabarmati. When Sabarmati was attacked, they all ran away and took shelter inside," Awasthi explained. He recounted how mobs smashed vehicles and furniture on a street facing the Sabarmati hostel. "All students and teachers standing there ran away when the attack happened. They had no idea that the ABVP would ever retaliate like this," he said. "You were telling us that 20 of the ABVP activists belonged to the JNU and 20 others were mobilised from outside," the reporter asked Awasthi. "I can tell you that I did all the mobilization. They don't have that much mind. You know you need to act like a superintendent or a commander. Why it's to be done and where exactly. I guided them about everything -- where to hide, where to go. I told them to do everything systematically. I didn't have any position or a tag. Still they listened to me carefully," the student claimed.
