There's a 1 percent chance Valve announces a Half-Life VR game this week Predicting what Valve is and isn't going to do is a losing game, even with reliable information, so I'm giving myself a 1 percent chance of getting this completely right. Valve is going to reveal the specs of its VR headset, the Valve Index, very soon, and we have good reason to believe it'll reveal some VR games along with it—one of which is rumored to be a Half-Life game. Valve told me on April 1 that it was "targeting May 1st for pre orders and a full announcement" of the Valve Index. That plan may have changed (especially because the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal is also happening this week), but the announcement will probably happen soon, because Valve also told me that it wants to start shipping hardware in June. I've asked Valve if this Wednesday is still the big day, and will update this post if I hear back. We also know for sure that Valve has been working on three VR games, which Gabe Newell described as full-sized games (as opposed to tech demo-like projects such as The Lab) in February 2017. "We think we can make three big VR games," Newell said at the time. "We think that we know enough now to do that, and we're going to find out if that’s the case. We're pretty sure that all the other game developers are going to learn positive or negative lessons from what we do, which is sort of where we have to be right now." Valve didn't tell me whether or not it's going to announce any of those games when pre-orders for the Index open up, but that seems like the obvious move. I'd be surprised if one or more weren't bundled with the headset to drive sales. Now for the Half-Life part of it: In November of last year, a source told UploadVR that one of the three upcoming Valve VR games is a Half-Life prequel. At the same time, UploadVR's sources confirmed that leaked images of the Valve Index were the real deal, and that turned out to be true. The photos from November 2018 look just like the actual hardware that was revealed earlier this month. Additionally, Valve News Network reported in March that "hlvr" and references to a shotgun appear in a Dota 2 update. Valve game files are full of references to other games, and that doesn't always mean anything, but it does strengthen the credibility of UploadVR's report from last year. To recap, here's what we know for sure: Valve is going to reveal the specs of the Valve Index soon, possibly on Wednesday. Valve plans to start taking pre-orders at the same time as the announcement. Valve plans to start shipping the headsets in June. Valve has been developing three "big" VR games for at least a couple years. And here's what we're speculating about: Valve will probably announce one or more of its VR games with the Index specs. One or more games may be bundled with the Index. One of the games is rumored to be a Half-Life game, though not Half-Life 3. As always with Valve, there's a small chance it does what all signs suggest it's going to do, and a much bigger chance it throws us a curveball at 5 pm on a Friday evening—but I'm certain that I'm at least partially right about all this. We'll be keeping an eye on the Valve Index Steam page this Wednesday to see if anything happens, whether it includes Half-Life or not.

O'Brian then contacts Deacon, requesting his help in investigating what NERO is researching in return for helping him track down Sarah. However, Deacon is disheartened to learn that even though Sarah survived her stab wound, the refugee camp she was taken to was also overrun, meaning she is still likely dead. Meanwhile, Lost Lake has an uneasy nonaggression treaty with the Rippers, held up only by Lost Lake's leader Iron Mike while his lieutenant Skizzo is skeptical of Rippers' willingness to honor the treaty. Instead, Skizzo makes a separate deal with the Rippers and turns Deacon over to them, where it is revealed that the leader of the Rippers is Jessie, an old enemy of Deacon and Boozer from before the outbreak. Deacon escapes custody and together with Boozer, drowns the Rippers by destroying the dam above their camp and kills Jessie. Skizzo is exiled from Lost Lake for his betrayal. Later, Deacon remembers that Sarah worked a government lab and would have had federal security clearance, meaning she would have been a priority to evacuate from the camp. O'Brian confirms that Sarah was evacuated to a military outpost at Crater Lake, but the area is now under the control of the Deschutes County Militia. O'Brian also warns Deacon that NERO's research has shown that the freakers are evolving, meaning their threat will only increase as time passes. He meets the leader of the Militia, Colonel Garret, under the guise of wanting to join up. At the Militia's main stronghold, Deacon is able to reunite with Sarah, who is working with the Militia to create a bioweapon that can destroy the freakers once and for all and won't leave until it is complete. Deacon reluctantly stays with the Militia in order to help her. Deacon and Sarah decide to head to the Cloverdale lab she used to work at in order to obtain a DNA sequencer. However, upon arriving at the lab, Sarah realizes that Cloverdale used her research to develop the virus that created the freakers. Upon returning to Sarah's lab, she reveals that she is not actually working on a bioweapon to kill the freakers, but a cure to save them. Deacon suggests that they desert the Militia and complete the cure at the Cloverdale lab, but the plan is complicated when an increasingly paranoid Colonel Garret puts Sarah under protective custody. Deacon attempts to extract Sarah, but the plan is foiled by Skizzo, who lies about Deacon's criminal past to Colonel Garret. Deacon is arrested but is freed by a sympathetic officer. He returns to Lost Lake, which has managed to repel an assault from the Militia but Iron Mike is mortally wounded. Deacon warns Lost Lake that the Militia will return in greater numbers to exterminate them all, and decides to perform a preemptive strike by destroying their headquarters with a truck bomb. Deacon then kills Skizzo and Colonel Garret, rescuing Sarah and ending the threat of the Militia for good. Afterwards, Deacon becomes the new leader of Lost Lake, living there with Sarah, Boozer, and his friends. He is then contacted by O'Brian again, who reveals that NERO had known about the virus' mutagenic effects all along and that he himself is infected with a strain of the virus that makes him an intelligent freaker. He warns Deacon that NERO is coming and that there is nothing they can do to stop them. Deacon, a cyclist with a tough and determined character, pays no attention to anyone but his loyal friend Boozer, who are trying to survive and roam in this unthinkable world.   13. It’s all about nitrates and nitrites, which have traditionally been used to keep meat pink and kill botulism: saltpetre, which you use in the salt beef, is potassium nitrate. There are other ways to avoid botulism: parma ham makers haven’t used nitrates or nitrites in 25 years. But even processed meat marked “nitrite-free” often uses vegetable extracts – celery or beetroot juice powder – that go on to produce nitrites, either in the preserving process or when they meet your bacteria. The best way to ensure you’re not eating them is to cure meat yourself. Pinkness sounds like the most trivial matter, until you consider what the alternative is to pink: grey. Nobody wants to eat grey food. But let’s worry about that in 10 days. As I salted some pork belly to make my own bacon – plainly, the food most of us would choose over longevity – I also cured some beef using saltpetre as well as salt, to act as a kind of scientific control experiment. What am I talking about? Of course that’s not a control. I just fancied it. The salt beef is pretty straightforward, although Henry’s recipe involves a wet cure, which means you soak the beef brisket in brine, rather than covering it in salt, as with a dry cure. Curing nerds will respect the authenticity, I’m sure, but evenness of tone is an elemental marker I would usually use to tell if something’s safe to eat. But I ate it anyway. I’m not a jessie. Slicing it will present a challenge to anyone who isn’t particularly dexterous. You can get through it beautifully; the texture has a beautiful giving firmness, like meat crossed with wax. I just couldn’t get it uniform. It was, as promised, totally delicious, but nothing could disguise the weird colour. It cannot be beyond the wit of man to find some non-toxic way to dye things pink, right? That’s what I’d suggest, for the bacon eaters of the future. The salt beef, meanwhile, was incredible – the colour of a spring red sky.

  15. NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a person at a park in Delhi's Shahdara, police said Friday. Police were informed about the incident on Thursday. The girl's mother has lodged a complaint and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, a senior police officer said. The person is yet to be identified. The officer said the survivor is out of danger and is recuperating.   16. In all my years of gaming, from the NES all the way through our current generation of consoles, there has been a single instance where I actually wore out a controller. It was the purple GameCube controller that came with my console. I put that thing through the wringer with hundreds of hours of Melee, Double Dash, Luigi's Mansion, and Muppet Party Cruise. For whatever reason, I had three or four backup controllers at the ready, so it wasn't an issue then. It is an issue for me now. The PlayStation 4 controller that came with my console - both arrived to me used rather than new -- is starting to slip, to negatively affect my play. The R3 and L3 buttons now activate with the slightest push, something that can totally ruin a round of Overwatch, the game most likely to blame for the controller's condition. With regular controllers, the only way forward once it does finally go is to replace the whole thing. With the Astro Gaming C40 TR Controller, there is a better way, even if it is quite expensive. While it does produce mass-market headphones for a reasonable price, its top of the line gear is targeted at professional consumers -- your esports athletes, your streamers. The C40 TR Controller is the company's first foray into the third-party controller space and with its high asking price, it's clearly aiming for that same professional demographic. In my conversation with an Astro Gaming representative, I was told the company studied the wear and tear controllers go through when used for excessive amounts of time and used that information to create this modular controller. Like other elite controllers on the market, the C40 features interchangeable thumbsticks and directional pads. The core unit includes six thumbsticks (two standard size concave sticks, two standard size domed sticks, one tall concave stick, and one tall domed stick) as well as a standard directional pad. It also has two programmable buttons on the rear of the unit, right where your middle finger rests. Unlike other elite controllers, players can switch up the positioning of the thumbsticks to their liking. I've always been a fan of the design of the Xbox 360 controller -- which Astro Gaming designed -- so I immediately took the controller apart and switched the positions of the sticks to match it. Using the tool included with the set, I quickly unscrewed the four screws on the faceplate and swapped the positions of the left stick and directional pad. Because these pieces are not plugged in but rather set in place, I never had a worry I might break something when switching out the pieces. The whole process took all of 90 seconds before I was ready to jump into a game. Not everything on the controller can be switched out. The face buttons, trigger buttons, and back buttons on the controller are not interchangeable, but Astro Gaming is promising they have a 10 million hit cycle. Having used the standard PlayStation 4 controller for the past two years, the weight of the C40 took a bit of getting used to. It's heavier than Sony's unit, and while the button placement is nearly identical to the DualShock, the rear buttons and shape of the L and R triggers have forced me to adjust how I hold a controller. Much like the PowerA Wireless Controller for Switch, I had to be conscious of my middle fingers. After a few days of using it with the default button setting, I decided to dive into the customization options Astro Gaming offers. Plugging the controller into my MacBook Pro, I downloaded the customization software and started messing around with the options. I was able to assign the rear buttons to my liking (though this can be done on the fly as well with just the controller), change up existing buttons functions, dim the LED light, and calibrate the sensitivity of the individual control sticks. The software lets me create multiple control setup profiles, two of which can be uploaded to the controller at a time. A switch at the top of the controller lets me swap between the two on the fly. While I tested the unit out with Spider-Man, Fortnite, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I saw the best results from all the customization options in my old go-to of Overwatch. A few updates ago, Blizzard changed the way Tjorbörn and Sombra played, adding the L3 button as a way to destroy their turret and translocator respectively. As I mentioned above, the R3 and L3 buttons on my PS4 controller have started to fail me. With the C40, I've been able to reassign L3 to the back button sitting under my left middle finger. With jump assigned to the right back button, the only time now I have to take my thumb off the right stick is when I want to use one of their special moves. This change for me has made a world of a difference. The back buttons are large and rhombus-shaped, and will activate no matter where you press them. For me, my Sombra game has been taken to the next level. Since configuring my controller, I've had no more accidental incidents of destroying my translocator. I'm able to jump in and out of combat with ease, utilizing the character as intended. Not only have I improved with her, but I've also become a better sniper due to the thumbstick calibration options. Widowmaker and Ana used to be characters I'd rarely touch, but after some fine tuning of the right thumbstick cursor speed, I've become more confident in my abilities with them. I have different set-ups for Sombra and the snipers, so it's a godsend that I can swap between the two control schemes on the fly with the switch at the top. Everything about this controller, from the feel of the buttons and grips to the trigger stops and cleverly designed micro-USB port, is absolutely top of the line. The C40 is the only third-party controller for the PS4 that supports wireless audio, achieved with the USB dongle that comes with the unit, and has a battery life of around 12 hours, though I made it 14 hours on Spider-Man before I had to plug it in again. It's leagues better than the standard PlayStation 4 controller and with its modular design, it's built to last an entire console generation. While I can say without a doubt the CR T40 Controller makes me a better gamer, it's a tough recommendation to anyone who isn't a career gamer or tied at the hip to their console. If you're someone who goes through a controller every few months because you go hard for hours at a time, this is a no brainer. For most people, however, $200 is an exorbitant asking price compared to a standard PS4 controller. Then again, can you really put a price on being able to switch between parallel and offset thumbsticks whenever you want?
  17. Whispers of a Machine chases big ideas, one of which is teased in an early-game conversation between a teacher and her young students. Artificial intelligence is strictly forbidden, she warns, and the police will come for anyone who tries to make something that can think for itself. But what about my parents, one quick-thinking student asks. They made me, and I can think for myself. Are they going to jail? It doesn't quite arrive at the philosophical weight it aspires to. Whispers of a Machine is a good adventure game, clever at times, but the heavy concepts it flirts with at the outset quickly give way to a conventional murder mystery in an unconventional setting: A vaguely post-apocalyptic world scarred by the long-ago, for-reasons-unknown collapse of the AI-driven computers and machines that humanity had grown to rely on. As a result of that breakdown, the world is kind of shitty, although not necessarily any shittier than it's going to be in 20 years anyway. Work is communal, living quarters are cramped and spartan, and there's an air of oppression that hangs over everything. If nothing else, it's believable. Vera Englund is one of this world’s most elite operatives, a special agent of the Central Bureau who's been sent to the remote town of Nordsund to investigate a grisly murder. But when she arrives, she discovers that one murder has become two, and then three—the situation is obviously more complicated than she expected. Fortunately for all involved (except the bad guy), Englund comes equipped with a number of special abilities as a result of "taking the Blue," a slang term for being injected with a nebulous nanofluid that confers abilities like enhanced strength and a "forensic scanner" that can detect and analyze clues. Later in the game she’ll also develop personalized abilities, which is where things start to get interesting. In the game's fiction, the Blue adapts to suit each user's needs. In practical terms, the choices you make in action and conversation will pull Vera's personality in one of three directions—empathetic, analytical, or assertive—which will in turn determine which enhancements she ends up with. You might be able to take on the appearance of someone else, or vanish from sight entirely; some agents can inflict short-term amnesia on NPCs, while others can bend them to their will with the mind-control whammy. Building character The RPG-esque character development is the most interesting thing about Whispers of a Machine, and the irony is that unless you're really paying attention you're quite likely to miss it. There's no indication that you developed this ability instead of that one—the abilities simply unlock, and you get on with your day. It’s a stealthy system that belies the game’s complexity, but I like it because it confers a more distinct sense that Vera is you: Instead of metagaming or mix-maxing or savescumming or whatever it is you do to reach an optimal outcome (and yes, I do it too), you get what you get. You are who you are. Upping the stakes even further, Whispers of a Machine does not allow manual saves, so unless you want to horse around with manually copying and overwriting your save files, you own every decision you make, good or bad. Do you regret being a jerk to the weird robotics guy? Wish you hadn't chopped that dude’s finger off? (Yup, that's on the menu.) Feel like you should've been a little more forceful with the local constabulary? Too bad—if you want to do it differently, replay the game. The flipside of that coin is that while Whispers of a Machine is short enough that a replay isn't a great chore, there's really not enough to it to justify a full second run-through. The central story is interesting but the game world is small and feels empty—there are virtually no characters in the game except those you need to interact with, who only appear when you need to interact with them—and there are no side quests or collectibles or optional extras. What you’re left with is different ways of solving the same, relatively few problems: Depending on your augmentations, you might camouflage yourself as an NPC to get past a guard, or engage an invisibility cloak instead. And hey, maybe that's exactly what you're looking for in multiple runthroughs—you do you! For me, though, it's a little too thin for a do-over. One thing I really appreciated about Whispers of a Machine is its snappy pacing. It unfolds over four days, each a segment of the mystery that ends with a recap of the day's events. Those end-of-day reports to my superior gave me a real sense of progress because they broke the game down into discrete chunks: I did this and this, and tomorrow I need to do that and that. An automatic notebook made tracking the course of the investigation reasonably simple, and when you enter a location with puzzles that need to be solved, you’re not able to leave until they’re done. My initial reaction to that was irritation (I'm stuck! Let me out!) but I quickly grew to like it. As someone who’s spent a lot of hours in other adventures running back and forth across 27 different rooms trying to figure out what the hell I’m supposed to do next, I have no doubt that being kept in place to solve a specific problem saved me a lot of frustration. Small ideas Which isn't to say that there are no instances of Adventure Game Bullshit—there are, and they're fortunately rare but still frustrating. (No spoilers, but you definitely want to pay attention to the Codex.) There's also one way over-the-top moment of deus ex machina nonsense courtesy of Vera's nigh-magical nanofluid: She suffers an injury that by all rights should leave her dead three times over, but instead she walks away with a bit of expositional hand-waving about the Blue working overtime to keep her alive. Yeah, but you're not even limping, Vera. The incident is ridiculous enough that it really stands out in a story that's otherwise nicely focused and engaging. My biggest complaint overall is that I wanted more coherency from Whispers of a Machine. The world, littered with robotic detritus and reliant on alternative energy sources, promises an unusual and interesting take on a civilization that didn't end so much as grind itself into a hole that humanity may still be digging. But it's all sizzle and no steak. Sometimes that can work—the outstanding Primordia leaps to mind as an example of a setting built entirely on questions that still manages to feel complete—but when major elements stand out as seriously odd, I feel like there should be at least some token nod toward justifying them. Why, for instance, is Nordsund built atop a massive pedestal that elevates the whole damn town hundreds of feet into the air? The surface of the Earth beneath it is perfectly nice, the atmosphere is safe, there are no Morlocks running around; it just is, and that's not really satisfying. Neither is the multipart ending. It's fun to be able to determine your own end-game fate, but the binary choice that wraps up Whispers of a Machine falls flat because you either do the obvious thing that you've been working toward throughout the game (and, presumably, your entire career as an Agent), or the completely out-of-character, out-of-nowhere opposite, with only the most threadbare rationalization for doing so. It feels forced and out of place—an RPG-style ending tacked on to a game that's not an RPG, for no clear reason. Most of my complaints arise from what I see as unfulfilled potential. A little more depth and detail would go a long way toward making the world feel not just believable but real and lived-in. But taken for what it is—a brief, entertaining point-and-click investigative adventure—I liked Whispers of a Machine quite a lot. Even though it stumbles as a 'big idea' game, it comes off well as a self-contained detective story with a sci-fi twist. Whispers of a Machine is a bit like a good Law & Order two-parter from season four: not too long (five or six hours) and not too deep, but comfortable, fun, and easy to digest. Keep your expectations squarely in the middle and you'll have a good time.

I also learned that Hungarian children are told spooky bogeyman stories about an owl with a copper penis. It's been an education. Zen Studios is a Budapest-based team better known for making pinball games than fantasy RPGs. Their first foray into the genre draws from Hungarian mythology, giving it a mix of oddity and familiarity—fairytale stuff like magic beanstalks and cursed castles alongside capering busós who wear demonic masks with droopy moustaches. Operencia is a dungeon-crawler, first-person and played on a grid like the old Wizardry games. It's the kind of thing people on the internet apparently call "blobbers" because you control a party that moves as a single inseparable unit, one big blob of archers, thieves, and wizards, only here one of those wizards is a táltos and the other is a fallen star in human form. What is it? Hungarian fantasy dungeon-crawler with turn-based battles. My hunter opens with a headshot targeting someone in the back row before my thief drops asphyxiating poison on the whole bunch, the magic stonemason summons a protector, and the knight chooses a taunt that also covers him in damaging thorns. Like everything in Operencia it's a mix of the surprising and the expected—sometimes I'm fighting beasts out of central European folklore, sometimes it's skeletons again. Fights occasionally drag, especially against "spawners" who have a random chance to come back from the dead. When the same two guys resurrect three times in one fight, or spiders eat their wounded allies to gain a hundred hit points and double in size, it becomes an accountancy test instead of a thrilling battle. You spent all those energy points on using your cool abilities straight away? Well, the fight's going to go for twice as long as you expected, hope you budgeted for this eventuality! Now sign these forms in triplicate. Let's get cooking You know what's fun, though? Brewing potions by solving logic puzzles. I am 100 percent serious about this. If you enjoyed solving the Jindosh Lock in Dishonored 2 or any part of Return of the Obra-Dinn you will like following recipes in Operencia. "The ingredient from the field cannot be a crop," one might say, "while the one from the mountain cannot be poisonous." You arrange icons representing the different qualities of various fungi and roots, making deductions to fill the gaps, then suddenly you've got a brew that removes damage-over-time effects. The dungeon puzzles are more traditional. Memorizing the timing of spike traps for instance, or measuring out a precise amount of wine to fill a keg using two bottles of different sizes. They often feel more like an element of pacing than of challenge, giving you something to mull over between the other pillars of Operencia, which are fights and the campfires where you rest, regaining your hit points at the cost of a piece of firewood while your companions trade stories. Those companions are a likeable bunch who banter and reveal secrets in a way players who miss older BioWare games will enjoy. Unfortunately, campfires are the only place you can switch party members in and out, and you can only access equipped items held by current party members in a different set of menus. It makes moving gear between them a hassle. Issues like this, and the occasional bug (like one that dropped me through the bottom of a forest), were minor complaints. For the first 10 hours I thoroughly enjoyed Operencia. Then I got to the Copper Forest, where I had to trek back and forth on a search for keys that involved pixel-hunting, much more opaque puzzles, and encountering the same enemies over and over. Even the fights against skeletons had some variety—sometimes they have bows or magic—but here I fought endless groups of identical Copper Soldiers with a bunch of resistances and immunities, the ability to drain energy making me rely on basic attacks rather than fancy ones, and hundreds of hit points. Even their attacks were boring, and eventually I turned down the volume so I didn't have to hear the whine of their buzzsaw blades five times in a row every turn. Later areas weren't quite so bad, but they never got back the magic of Operencia's opening. The puzzles were more about scouring the environment for hidden clues or tiny objects, and though some interesting new enemies appeared the sluggish feeling never quite went away. It was only rarely as inventive or delightfully strange as it had been at the beginning, once upon a time. Operencia ended up being a game I wish I liked more. Its first half was enchanting and clever, but the second half was a slog and the main thing I gained from it was some trivia about a giant Hungarian owl with a weird copper wang who scares children.
