Though 1Weather bills itself as the most aesthetically pleasing weather app, that doesn't mean it's not informative and packed with data. In fact, it managed to cram more information into its main page than the nerdy Editors' Choice Weather Underground. On the maps main screen you'll find visibility, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed/direction, UV index, dew point, temperature, and chance of precipitation. Each has an accompanying glyph, and there's a handy explanation for each measurement when you tap it. Very nice. Swiping right pulls up more displays for extended forecasts, hourly and extended forecasts in symbols, chance of precipitation for the week, an animated map, phases of the moon, and time of sunrise and sunset. With the exception of the radar map and text-based forecasts, each display is carefully rendered with clever icons. For example, an inverted umbrella indicates no chance of rain and an eyeball is shorthand for visibility. I wasn't able to get 1Weather to display tomorrow's sunrise and sunset times, however. My favorite design flourish is found on the extended and hourly forecast page, where you slide your finger back and forth across a graph to get the forecast for a particular time or day. High and low temperatures share a graph with bars indicating the chance of precipitation. At a glance, you can see a day's or a week's worth of information, or you can drill down for the specifics. It's a deft way of displaying a lot of information. Like most weather apps, 1Weather has radar map with plenty of layers you can toggle on and off. I was surprised to see various disasters as overlays, so you can see nearby fires in addition to the usual radar, clouds, temperature, and so on. I really like how 1Weather handles locations, keeping them tucked into a collapsed left rail. You can search and see an overview of your favorite locations, making the app a handy travel companion. 1Weather appears to get most of its data from the National Weather Service. Weather Underground also draws from the same source but augments it with data from thousands of home weather stations and even user reports. Design, Design, Design 1Weather is all about looking good, and overall it succeeds. But the app is still just a framework for data drawn from forecast providers, and sometimes the data from all the disparate sources doesn't quite mesh together just right. For example, the text forecasts are huge blocks of words that are sometimes unreadable against the Creative Commons licensed images the app uses as backgrounds. Also, those images look a bit low-res and cheesy against 1Weather's fancy fonts and icons. Thankfully, the app has several appearance settings which let you address some of these issues. Another problem with the design is that, on occasion, customizing it seems to make the app unstable. I experienced an unfortunate number of crashes on my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active when attempting to change the app's look. After changing my theme from "live weather" to "space," the app crashed three times before it successfully launched. It's also a bit surprising that, for an app as design-centric as 1Weather, a lot of the information is repetitious. For example, by the time you get to the precipitation page, you've already seen the exact same information two or three times. That's the difference between good art design and good user-experience design. I liked how Weather Underground lets me reorder some of the sections like moon phases or extended forecasts to avoid this sort of problem. Widgets Most people will probably prefer to get their weather information from handy widgets than from big hulking apps, and 1Weather has widgets to spare. The app comes preloaded with six widgets of varying shapes and sizes. Each lets you choose a theme and a specific location, so you can customize them to your heart's content. My two favorites are the info-packed circular widget and the long strip widget that shows a week's worth of extended forecast data. The first occupies a 2-by-2 slot on your Android home screen and the other takes up 4 by 2. Weather Underground has fewer widgets, but they need fewer tweaks to look and work how I want them to. Weather Underground also has a large radar map widget and tiny 1-by-1 weather data widgets. 1Weather also puts weather info into your notification tray and notification bar, but Weather Underground is both more useful and artful in this particular area. Partly Cloudy 1Weather delivers on its promise of simple, beautiful design. It has some foibles, but they are easily rectified with a little fiddling in the settings. I'd actually like to see the developers go further in future versions, perhaps letting users remove panes they don't care for. The sheer number of widgets will make anyone happy, but the reliance on royalty-free images and the crashing I experienced gives me pause. I really like the 1Weather Android app, but I feel like its aesthetics took precedence over information and ease of use. The app brings a lot of good design to the table, but it takes a back seat to our Editors' Choice Android weather app, Weather Underground.

Thomas Was Alone is an endearing, emotionally complex puzzle platformer about a group of simple geometric shapes grappling with their place in a strange new world. John Wick is a movie about a guy who commits international mass murder because Theon Greyjoy offed his dog. What do they have in common? Bithell Games, which made the jumping blocks game, is now making one based on the stylish action films. Surprisingly, given the subject matter, John Wick Hex is not a shooter, but a "fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game" that looks a bit like XCOM but with simplified visuals and more up-close-and-personal combat. (Have you ever kicked a Muton in the junk? I think not.) It will tell a new, original story set in the John Wick universe featuring voice work from Ian McShane (Winston) and Lance Reddick (Charon), through which players will unlock new weapons, suit options, and locations in "fight-choreograhped chess brought to life as a videogame." "Players must choose every action and attack they make while considering their immediate cost and consequences," publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment said in the announcement. "Every move in John Wick Hex feels like a scene from the movies, and every fight contributes to your progress on the job and requires precise strategic thinking." I first saw Pikuniku at EGX. On a show floor you can’t really appreciate nuance so I’ll be honest, it was the bright, round characters which drew me over. I stayed because I could kick things with my character’s little red legs. I didn’t have enough time to get much more than that, so when it came to the review it was such a lovely moment to realise it wasn’t actually a Wattam-style interactive toy, but a little dystopian tale wearing a Mr Men and Little Miss storybook aesthetic. After an opening cinematic where a pink cloud offers you free money, you, a little red blob with legs, wake up in a cave on a hill overlooking a town. A useful exposition ghost prompts you to head into the fresh air so you can start exploring the 2D world. Jumping, rolling, strolling and kicking are your primary forms of interaction. At first you’re just playing with them, perhaps enjoying the fact you can go a bit faster if you pull your legs in and roll, or bouncing around, trying to kick anything in the environment. The local villagers believed you to be a scary beast and are not entirely sure how to handle the fact that you’re actually smaller than them, not threatening beyond delivering grumpy toddler-style kicks and pushes, and don’t look anything like their local beast lore descriptions. They settle on imprisoning you until you agree to repair the rope bridge connecting the village to the village crops (which you broke by bouncing on it) so that the villagers can tend their corn and be rewarded with rains of cash from the pink cloud. What evolves from there is a cheery tale of endearingly bumbling and adorably illustrated violent resistance against a deep state social cleansing conspiracy. Despite that premise, the tone never tips over into insufferable didacticism. Instead it remains at “more affable and PG version of a Dr Evil plot from Austin Powers” for the duration. Supporting that tone, the rest of the cast of characters have that specifically 2010s slight archness to them which keeps them from becoming twee. For example, after kicking a couple of eggs I found in a nest and watching the chicks they contained flap off, a mother bird descended. She demanded to know whether I kicked the eggs and I chose to deny all knowledge. I was still standing in the nest and she replied “What do you mean it wasn’t you?? Your feet are still on the shells!” Rounding up the chicks to make amends, one of them turned out to be a huffy teen (“why can’t I have my own life already”) and the other was fully conversant in self-help speak (“it’s true we haven’t bonded very much lately”). Basic platforming is the canvas against which these little interactions play out. At first that’s jumping from ledge to ledge and pushing or kicking objects. Later you can start swapping your hats or using different objects to trigger new interactions. For example, one hat turns you into a mobile sprinkler system. If you target particular plants they’ll flower and provide a temporary platform which will let you access a new part of the level. It’s these hats and objects which generally help you access all the little Easter eggs hidden around the world. It’s why I’m still playing even though I’ve long-since completed the main story. There are secret areas to visit, dungeons to explore, a wizard to please and glasses to purchase. It’s not a perfect experience. I got frustrated with the bridge repair section before accidentally finding the solution, and I completely forgot where to find a particular character I needed for a quest. For the latter I ended up using my screenshots to piece together the location info as nothing in-game reminded me. The balance between exploration and design prompts or interface info thus feels slightly off in places. Otherwise, the game is small enough that messing about will reveal the way forward, and offer up adorable interactions along the way. It is not tailored for guitar, but instead is aimed at the entire music industry. Pros Guitar Pro 7 has all the features you want. It’s highly unlikely that you will ever say, “too bad it doesn’t do x”. The MySongBook companion library gives you a ready supply of tabs to learn, experiment with, and test. The virtual sounds are great, a huge advancement over previous generations midi-sounding score playbacks Guitar Pro 7 can import and export lots of file types. They also have special packages available for education folks. Cons There’s a learning curve. As with all powerful software, it takes a while to learn how to do even (seemingly) small tasks. As mentioned, Tabd would be a better solution for guitarists unable to invest time in learning a dense piece of software. iOS and Android apps are an additional charge (iOS – $6.99 and Android – $5.49) with limited functionality in editing and writing. So don’t expect a 100% seamless experience from laptop to handheld. Final Opinion Guitar Pro 7 is great. If you want to do some real work. If you want to write professional looking tabs and sheet music, compose multiple parts, and share music with other serious musicians – than this is an excellent software for you. If you just want to download and play tabs that other people have written, you should go with Arobas Music’s MySongBook. The local player software is free, and you just pay per tab download. Finally, if pro quality isn’t an issue, and you just want access to po[CENSORED]r tabs (and maybe jot down a few riffs yourself), I would recommend Ultimate Guitar’s site and app, and Tabd.

What is it? The fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE made quite the impressionwhen we first tested it in the US last year. You see, it seemed to offer all the features you’d expect from a large, posh SUV: a swanky, leather-upholstered interior; a smooth, punchy powertrain; a sublime ride and size-defying handling courtesy of its trick new E-Active air suspension system, and a range of clever new driver aids that are yet to appear on the S-Class. Combined, this saw the GLE 450 scoop four-and-a-half stars. That isn’t a bad innings by any measure. Now, though, the GLE has touched down in Britain, and it’s the entry-level 300d variant that’s going under the microscope. This means there are a few crucial differences between this car and the one we drove across the pond in late 2018. Chiefly, the high-tech, silky smooth EQ-boost 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine has been swapped out for a much less sophisticated (at least on paper) four-cylinder diesel. It also means there’s no air suspension. Well, there shouldn’t be; for some reason our early production test model had Mercedes’ regular Airmatic suspension architecture added back in, despite the fact this won’t be an option for UK GLE 300d customers. Odd. Anyway, back to that engine. It’s the 2.0-litre unit that features in practically any Mercedes model you’d care to mention, and under the bonnet of the GLE 300d it develops a respectable-enough 242bhp and 369lb ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission deploys all this to all four wheels. What's it like? That engine lends what is now quite a large SUV (it’s just under 5m long, and weighs close to 2.2 tonnes) a decent amount of shove. Mercedes claims a 0-62mph time of 7.2sec, which puts it into warm hatch territory in terms of straight line pace. While we’re unable to verify those claims this time around, it certainly didn’t feel like a slouch out on the road. The only trouble is that it’s not quite as refined as you might hope. There’s a noticeably agrarian edge to its soundtrack under an open throttle, and it begins to feel and sound strained rather early on in the accelerative process. Perhaps the forthcoming GLE 350d, with its two additional cylinders, will better fit the mould of an upmarket SUV in this respect. We’ll have to wait and see. The nine-speed ‘box can be a touch difficult to get along with at times, too. Step-off is generally smooth provided you don’t have all the delicacy of an elephant, and the manner in which it shuffles between ratios while you’re on the move is slick enough. But it can be overly keen to hold on to gears at times - even when you’re not in Sport mode - meaning you’ll be subjected to that slightly rough-edged diesel soundtrack a bit more often than you might like. It’s prone to being caught out when pulling away from low speeds, too, where there’s a moment’s hesitation, before it shunts its chosen gear in and takes off. Our GLE didn’t come with the super-sophisticated E-Active air suspension we experienced on that original launch. Instead, Mercedes’ AirMatic set-up replaced the standard coil-spring arrangement that should have featured. Rather disappointingly, it didn’t seem to strike the same balance between handling panache and genteel ride refinement as the GLE 450 we drove Stateside did. It’s certainly comfortable around town and on the motorway, and it does a reasonable job of rounding off those sharper secondary intrusions caused by potholes, expansion joints and the like. The fairly chunky sidewalls of the 275-section tyres the 20in alloys were wrapped in likely helped out in this regard. Move onto faster, lumpier A-roads, though, and its overly soft set-up leads to some rather pronounced body movement. Uniform undulations are ironed out in a smooth enough fashion, but more irregular surfaces (the sort you’re more likely to find here in Britain) can generate some unwelcome head toss. Switching to Sport mode better ties things down, but seems to take things a touch too far in the other direction, compromising some of the pliancy it exhibits on smoother stretches of Tarmac. A setting somewhere between Comfort and Sport would probably be the Goldilocks zone, I reckon. It doesn’t really mask its mass through corners as well as I’d hoped it might, either. It’s a shade too roly-poly to really encourage any properly sporty driving, and its overly light, muted steering rack doesn’t leave much of an impression either. Sport mode supposedly brings a bit more weight here, but the difference is minor at best. That said, the inclusion of Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive architecture does mean it grips well on a balanced throttle. It will begin to understeer if you begin to get too apeish with your corner speeds, but the manner in which its front end starts edging outwards is delicate and predictable. It’s dynamic manners are best described as safe, rather than anything approaching exciting. Should I buy one? One of the GLE’s strong suits is its cabin, which is impressively roomy, and for the most part well finished. The square air vents in the centre of the dash are a smart new design touch, while the MBUX infotainment system and digital cockpit (both of which use 12.3in screens as standard) work well and really look the part. There’s a problem, though. At £55,685, it seems rather pricey for what it is. A BMW X5 xDrive30d is only £1,800 or so more expensive, and that car gets Munich’s really rather lovely 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel as standard. And air suspension. It’s a car that feels so much more resolute than the Mercedes - not just in the way it rides, but the manner in which it hustles itself down a twisty road, too. It’s tricky to give this particular GLE the nod then. It’s not quite composed or demure enough to truly impress, and it lacks the handling smarts of the X5. It’s well finished and spacious for sure, but a bit forgettable everywhere else. One set of human remains has been found and at least three people are unaccounted for after an explosion Friday at a gas station in Rockbridge County, Virginia, according to State Police Sgt. Richard Garletts. Garletts said the total of unaccounted people ranges from three to five, which includes family members of employees and a possible patron. He later said one set of remains was found at the scene. The explosion occurred around 9:30 a.m. Four injured people were transported to hospitals, Garletts said. Rockbridge County is west of Charlottesville. CNN's Chuck Johnston contributed to this report.
