Five days after the inclement eruption of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala, which has left 109 dead, the colossus is still active today with the generation of lahars and pyroclastic flows that forced the authorities to order the withdrawal of lifeguards and evacuate more residents.
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insuvumeh) reported that the colossus, located 50 kilometers west of the capital, has recorded constant activity in the last hours.
He explained that a new lahar descended through the ravines Santa Teresa, Mineral, Taniluyá and Ceniza, tributaries of the Pantaleón and Achiguate rivers.
He attributed this incident to the strong accumulation of material from the recent activity of the Fuego volcano.
The lahar transports fine material similar to cement, rocks of two and three meters in diameter and trunks of trees that affect, mainly, the communities located on the banks of the ravines, reason why a new evacuation was carried out, said the entity. scientist, although he did not specify figures on how many people it is.
In addition, new pulses of pyroclastic flows originated in the Las Lajas and Jute ravines, which generated ash columns up to 6,000 meters high with dispersion to the west and southwest of the cone.
According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) the evacuees were residents who had returned to the village El Rodeo in search of belongings, lifeguards and journalists who were close to the so-called "ground zero".
The rescue tasks have been suspended since yesterday due to the bad weather that prevails in the region and only the entry of heavy machinery has been allowed to clean the road that was blocked by the volcanic material.
Meanwhile, representatives of the United Nations System made a visit to the Humanitarian Assistance and Assistance Coordination Center (CCAH), in order to monitor the actions that are being carried out to administer international aid.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported today that it assesses the needs of Guatemalans affected by the eruption of the Fuego volcano and who are on the ground documenting the requests of the shelters.
However, he clarified that due to the volcanic activity after the eruption last Sunday, the evaluation of the needs of the affected po[CENSORED]tion has been delayed.
According to the latest report of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), there are 109 dead, 58 injured, 197 missing, 4,175 sheltered, 12,407 evacuated, 182 affected and 1,713,617 affected.
Meanwhile, international humanitarian aid has begun to arrive in Guatemala after the government last Thursday called for cooperation, especially for medicines.
A group of doctors from Israel who arrived last night visited the San Juan de Dios General Hospital in the capital, where some patients are burned during the eruption.
Mexico also sent an air ambulance to move six patients who suffered burns to that country. Two days ago, another six were transferred to the United States.
Several organizations, including the business leadership, have collected food, bottled water and blankets for those affected by the activity of the volcano.
The Immediate Response Teams (ERI) of the Conrad continue today with the monitoring of the evolution of the activity of the colossus, which affected mainly communities of the departments of Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Suchitepéquez, declared in a state of public calamity.
According to the authorities, entry into the zone will remain restricted. EFE
