Youth services librarian’s passion sparks children’s curiosity
Russ ;x posted a topic in Curiosities
Children of all ages have an innate curiosity for the world around them. As they discover what shaving cream feels like for the first time or pick up an object that is heavy and it surprises them, their young brains are constantly expanding with new information. As kids have various experiences sparked by their curiosity, their new discoveries ignite a change in their lives. No matter how big or small that learning moment is, ImagineIF Youth Services Librarian Ellie Newell lives to facilitate and witness that spark of wonder. “Kids are just so cool, they’re so open to curiosities,” Newell said. “The whole world is interesting to them… Every single time a kid has that ‘wow’ moment, it’s like, oh, that’s why I came to work today. I love this job, this is my absolute dream job.” Newell and her youth services team are responsible for stocking the shelves in the children and teen sections of the library and planning various learning activities throughout the week. But one of their biggest projects is designing and facilitating ImagineIF’s Summer Experience program, which begins in June and runs through August each year. This program gives children and teens the opportunity to participate in activities focused around science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, while also building useful 21st century skills. The unique curriculum developed in-house is backed by science, and early childhood development learning principles. Newell explained hands-on, tactical ways of experiencing materials, such as simply crunching up Rice Krispy treats or walking barefoot on rounded river rocks, builds neuroconnections. “That’s how we build brains; all of our work is informed by neuroscience,” Newell said. “When you’re a tiny child, like before the age of 8, your brain is so plastic, so elastic and you can make all these connections.” NEWELL NOT only leads the design of programs for small children, but also plans out the library’s summer activities for grade school kids and teens as well. Summer Experience features 108 programs across three communities — Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Bigfork — and impacts thousands of youth across the valley. Participating in the Summer Experience also helps prevent the “summer slide,” where children have a hard time retaining the information they learned during the previous school year. Newell explained this is a known problem for all children, however, youth from families in lower-income brackets suffer even more from this learning slump. “Every kid, no matter what economic situation you come from, has that summer slide, but it’s especially exasperated based on class privilege,” Newell said. She further explained she is passionate about issues of equity, and is proud all the library’s services are completely free, including the Summer Experience. She feels it is important for every child to have the same opportunities to learn. “We are doing Summer Experience especially because we know that there is that privilege gap and some kids are accessing those rich experiences, but some don’t have access,” she added. As ImagineIF hosts these engaging activities, Newell explained it also gets more people through the doors of the library and provides opportunities for learning in more ways than one. “They come for the science and then they toddle away with huge stacks of books, which is fabulous. I mean it’s all circular, it all feeds itself,” Newell said. GROWING UP in Helena, Newell lived in close proximity to the Lewis and Clark Public Library. She recalled as a child going on daily walks to the library with her mother, who has a degree in zoology and has always been a naturally inquisitive scientist, and being encouraged along the way to observe the interesting environment around her. “Reading bird books as a baby on my mom’s lap, that was definitely my childhood. It was like encouraging curiosity about the natural world,” Newell said. “I feel like I had a very blissful childhood in that respect, like curiosity being really rewarded.” Newell also comes from a family of makers. Many of her female relatives are fiber artists and both of her grandfathers and her father enjoyed various building projects. Her parents were both librarians and often encouraged their children to seek answers for any questions that came up. Newell said even at the dinner table they always had an encyclopedia, atlas, thesaurus and dictionary readily available, and if a question came up her parents’ answer was always, “look it up!” ALTHOUGH NEWELL grew up with librarian parents, her path to finding her passion as a youth librarian was not that simple. After finishing her bachelor’s degree in English literature at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, she bounced around to many different jobs throughout her 20s. Newell worked with domestic violence victims and she was a reporter at an independent newspaper. She even studied and explored an apprenticeship in midwifery. But through all this time of professional discovery, she found the common ground among these very different positions was taking pleasure in witnessing people’s lives change through curiosity and access to information. Her first library job was in rural Nevada at Douglas County Public Library. She said it had a small staff, but the librarians there took her under their wing and expanded her job to things well outside the original description. She fell in love with seeing people of all ages light up as they discovered how many books the library shelved to feed their passions. “You’d think growing up with librarian parents, it would have come sooner,” she said with a laugh. This led her to obtain her master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Washington and eventually work under an honorable mentor and now hero, longtime Seattle Public Librarian Nancy Pew. Pew further fed Newell’s passion as all of the work she did was based on vibrantly being part of the community, and embedding herself and the library in that community. Newell explained they would often take the library to parks and other places in the area to provide as many people as possible access to the library’s resources. “I’ve been really lucky to have mentors that believe in the power of abundant library services, the power of equity,” Newell said. IN HER time thus far as a youth librarian, Newell loves to see children at the height of discovery. However, she enjoys seeing people of all ages come in the door and fall in love with the library over and over again. “Basically I believe that people are innately curious,” she said. “What totally lights me up is people being lifelong learners, having curiosities, then finding more information and then their curiosity gets bigger. That is just my jazz.” As a passionate librarian, and lifelong learner herself, she is naturally interested in many topics. She and her partner of eight years recently bought a house in Kalispell, and Newell is now using the library’s resources to read up on plumbing, gardening and other home ownership matters. Newell also enjoys hiking in Glacier, backcountry skiing, being outdoors, cooking and, honestly, reading books with her cat Gimli. “I mean it’s true, I really do like to read books with my cat,” she said. “It’s such a stereotype, but I love it.” Newell’s favorite books are what she calls tough books. Her all-time favorite book is “Voyage to the Bunny Planet” by Rosemary Wells, in which bunny children are all having lousy days, but travel to an idyllic bunny planet to imagine how their day should have gone. Newell said she likes books where the author respects that children can handle tough topics. “Children are so much more resilient and so much smarter than what we give them credit for,” Newell said. “So I love books that respect children and give kids the benefit of the doubt.” At the library, she said it is all about connecting children and adults alike with information to transform themselves, their communities and the world. “That’s the process and it just happens to be the thing we are peddling is something as wonderful as books,” Newell said. -
Ongoing research on site has now extended to the outbuildings. Previously, a windmill was restored on top of the ruins at the site. After the ruins of the inn will have been researched, it is hoped that it too could be restored to house an exhibition about Rīga's former manors. "We're at the level of the 17th century, about a meter below the last known period of habitation. This is deep enough for us to understand the building's former structure." Archaeologist Rūdolfs Brūzis is referring to the 17th-century cultural layer at the foundation of a building, which was part of the Mazjumprava manor complex in Rumbula, near Rīga. He is one of the archaeologists busy excavating the edifice which first appeared on plans in 1695 and is later referred to as an inn. "We've been working for three weeks now. We've uncovered parts of a former building from the Jesuit period. And we've understood the structure of the 17th-century inn. The 18x8 square-meter building may have held ten to fifteen people. They were able to stay the night inside warm premises as two stoves have been discovered. The building had big windows [..] it was definitely rented to an entrepreneur who had the right to provide inhabitants with the services of an inn. "It didn't always mean food and drink. Often it meant that voyagers and peasants going to Rīga could lay down to rest before starting trade in the morning. Of course it meant that money changed hands here. The oldest coin we've found is a Rīga Free City schilling, dating to the late 16th or early 17th century. Afterwards, schillings of the Swedish king in the 17th century are also tied to the time this place was an inn," said Brūzis. Sources say that the inn had been built above a former Jesuit building. The territory near Mazjumprava is inhabited since the 13th century, when Bishop Albert granted swaths of land to the nuns of the Cistercian Order. The plot of land stretched to Lake Ķīšezers, and the nuns were part of an abbey that was at the same time part of the city fortifications. "The Mazjumprava manor house, in ruins now, may have been part of a fortress, the avant-garde of the Rīga defenses. The rules of the Jesuit Order sti[CENSORED]ted that it should be autonomous, providing for itself with livestock, fields, pastures, making food and beer and processing cereals. They built a windmill and I suppose the building which we're now excavating," said Brūzis. He said the excavations could contribute to research about the administrative system in Latvia.

Electric cars absolutely do produce less CO2 than gas guzzlers, a new study has confirmed – countering claims that carbon emissions from the manufacture of electric cars and the production of electricity outweighed the savings on the road. Crunching the numbers on data collected from 59 different regions in the world that represent 95 percent of the world's transport and heating demand, researchers found that electric cars lead to an overall loss in CO2 output in the vast majority of places. As electricity generation gets less carbon-intensive, the balance will tip away from petrol cars even further. In countries like Sweden and France, where a lot of electricity is generated from renewables and nuclear, over their lifetimes electric cars can account for 70 percent less in terms of carbon emissions than petrol equivalents, when all the factors are included. The team also looked at the impact of electric heat pumps as a low-carbon option for home heating, and found they too were better for the environment overall, with electricity generation taken into account. "The idea that electric vehicles or electric heat pumps could increase emissions is essentially a myth," says environmental scientist Florian Knobloch, from Radboud University in the Netherlands. "We've seen a lot of discussion about this recently, with lots of disinformation going around. Here is a definitive study that can dispel those myths. We have run the numbers for all around the world, looking at a whole range of cars and heating systems. " "Even in our worst-case scenario, there would be a reduction in emissions in almost all cases. This insight should be very useful for policy-makers." The researchers connected that as it stands today, electric cars are better for the climate than petrol-powered ones in 95 percent of the world. The small number of exceptions include countries such as Poland, where the electricity generation process is still largely dependent on coal. (You can look up your own country in the team's supplementary tables published here.) With the world now moving towards renewable fuels, there should soon be no exceptions. By 2050, if governments put the right policies into place, one in every two cars on the road could be electric, saving some 1.5 gigatons of carbon emissions a year. "Taking into account emissions from manufacturing and ongoing energy use, it's clear that we should encourage the switch to electric cars and household heat pumps without any regrets," says Knobloch. The researchers are calling on governments and policy makers not to delay in terms of pushing the switch to electric - even accelerating the changeover by a year or two could save a huge amount of CO2 being put into the atmosphere. With that in mind it's good to see the use of renewable energy expanding across the world, as well as technological improvements in terms of how electric cars can be designed and kept running. There are still lots of challenges ahead, in terms of producing electric cars, generating more electricity from renewable sources, improving charging infrastructure - and getting more people to ditch the car altogether. However, we know the direction we need to go in. "The answer is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, we should choose electric cars and household heat pumps over fossil fuel alternatives," says computational scientist Jean-Francois Mercure, from the University of Exeter in the UK.

The US has charged Venezuela's President, Nicolás Maduro, and other senior officials in the country with drug trafficking crimes. The move, which will increase tensions between the two nations, was announced by Attorney General William Barr. The US also offered a $ 15m (£ 12.5m) reward for any information leading to Mr Maduro's arrest. It has long accused him of leading a corrupt and brutal regime, a charge he has repeatedly rejected. Washington backs opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who last year declared himself interim president. The new charges represent an escalation in the longstanding US pressure campaign on Mr Maduro, which has also included sweeping sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry. As well as Mr Maduro, the US indictment charged more than a dozen top Venezuelan officials including the country chief justice and its defense minister. "The Venezuelan people deserve a transparent, responsible, representative government that serves the needs of the people - and that does not .... engage in illicit narcotics trafficking," the US state department said. "These individuals violated the public trust by facilitating shipments of narcotics from Venezuela, including control over planes that leave from a Venezuelan air base," it added. At a news conference announcing the indictment on Thursday, Mr Barr accused Mr Maduro of working with the Colombian Farc rebel group "to flood the United States with cocaine." "While the Venezuelan people suffer, this cabal ... lines their pockets," he said. Earlier on Thursday, Mr Maduro accused the US and Colombia of conspiring against Venezuelua and causing the violence within the country. What's the background to the Venezuela crisis? Mr Maduro narrowly won a presidential election in April 2013 after the death of his mentor, President Hugo Chávez. He was elected to a second term in May 2018 in an election seen as flawed by international objective. Venezuela has experienced economic collapse - inflation was 800,000% last year - and 4.8m people have left the country. Mr Guaidó has accused President Maduro of being unfit for office. He has won the support of many in the country as well as US and EU leaders. But Mr Maduro has remained in power and is backed by Russia, China and Cuba.

Microsoft already offers physical feedback on some devices, or haptic feedback on others. Both give you a more tactile sensation when typing on a touch screen or some other devices. While both are great, nothing beats the clicky typing sound of a keyboard. If you miss the sound of a physical keyboard, you can enable these sounds with the Ease of Access menu. It’s even available for users who are already typing on a physical keyboard, in case you need some extra clicky sounds. 1) Type Ease of access in the search box on the toolbar. 2) From the search results, select Ease of Access keyboard settings. 3) In the Keyboard settings window, scroll down to the Filter Keys section. 4) Under the Use Filter Keys title switch on the toggle button. 5) In the options that open up, select Beep when keys are pressed or accepted. 6) Click X to close the window.

The folks over at broadbandnow.com have completed their research for the impact of the Coronavirus on web activity and found that of the top 200 cities in the U.S., 88 (44%) are suffering from reduced download speeds due to increased web activity. For the testing, the firm measured broadband speeds over the week of March 15 - March 21, comparing the figures to the speeds 10 weeks earlier before the COVID-19 outbreak. The three worst offenders are Austin TX, with a 44% hit, Oxnard CA, at 42%, and Winston Salem NC with a 41% decrease in download speeds. New York City is witnessing a 24 percent drop in download speeds. What is Causing the Dips? With the majority of folks stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for web data has increased exponentially over the last two weeks. Many people are working from home, taking classes from home, or unable to go to work and quarantined at home. The result is that home broadband connections are seeing a severe uptake in demand to meet users' needs, with the networks under high strain to keep up. Meanwhile, Netflix and other content providers are cutting image quality during peak hours in order to ensure that data connections don't end up congested, allowing those that work from home to continue to do their jobs as effectively as possible - after all, they 're a big factor that's keeping the economy above water. Various ISPs around the U.S. have lifted data caps temporarily, and are expanding free access for low-income customers where possible. The first of these was AT&T, who set an example for the industry to follow.

Ready to hit the water? This Raspberry Pi boating project was created by a developer known on Reddit as bearthesailor. Bareboat Necessities is a DIY Pi-powered computer designed with all of your boating needs in mind. This project houses a Raspberry Pi 4 below deck, so waterproofing your Pi isn't necessary. The Bareboat Necessities has a panel of interfaces on the front and back with a wide selection of features. You'll find USB ports, voltage meters and power switches for different components. There are even RF connectors to use with antennas. The maker has the Pi running the Pi's Raspbian operating system, along with OpenPlotter 2.0, an open-source sailing platform. Because the project uses a Raspberry Pi 4, you can use Wi-Fi to set up the software remotely and even access the boat computer using a smartphone or tablet. Bearthesailor provided a big list of recommended software on the project Github page. You can find applications to display weather predictions, a compass, plus temperature and barometric readings. There are even marine-specific applications, like SailGuage to help monitor things such as speed over ground, course over ground and depth below transducer. Tuktuk Chart Plotter and KIP Dashboard interface with Signal K — an open-source self-described universal marine data exchange. And, of course, you can add a music player because boats absolutely need kicking tunes. Visit the official Bareboat Necessities Github page for an intricate breakdown of the project and how to create one yourself.

The Intel Core i9-10880H, which should be the direct successor to last year i9-9880H, hasn't been announced yet, but benchmarks results are already creeping up. Hardware leaker @_rogame reportedly found the upcoming mobile chip in a 3DMark submission yesterday. The i9-10880H (codename Comet Lake-H) is expected to arrive sporting eight cores and 16 threads like its predecessor. Besides the improved clock speeds, there isn't any significant architectural changes with Comet Lake over the i9-10880H's Coffee Lake. Therefore, we expect the i9-10880H to retain the same 16MB of L3 cache as the i9-9880H. Being a H-series part, the 14nm processor will likely operate within the 45W envelope. According to the 3DMark entry, the i9-10880H could come with a base clock fixed at 2.3 GHz, which is the same base clock on the prior i9-9980H. The only thing that the i9-10880H has going for it is the higher boost clock. If the 3DMark's report is accurate, the i9-10880H will flex a 5 GHz boost clock, which is 200 MHz higher than the i9-9980H but only by 4.2%. With the previous generation, Intel offered consumers the i9-9980H and faster i9-9980HK. The latter operates with a 100 MHz and 200 MHz higher base and boost clocks, respectively. It's plausible that Intel would release a i9-10880HK with slightly faster clocks. So far, the i9-10980HK has appeared with a 3.1 base clock and 5.27 GHz boost clock in unconfirmed benchmarks. Given the huge gap between the i9-10980HK and i9-10880H's specifications, there's certainly room for a i9-10880HK to slide in between. The i9-10880H and i9-10980HK should be very po[CENSORED]r choices for upcoming high-performance mobile workstations and gaming laptops. However, they'll have to compete with AMD's Ryzen 4000-series (codename Renoir) chips, such as the Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 7 4800H.

Microsoft and Nvidia both released statements today claiming recovery in their supply chains following Chinese efforts over the past few months to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country and reopen factories. This follows recent announcements from both Intel and AMD reassuring customers of an adequate processor supply going forward, which could leave Apple, still impacted by reliance on non-Chinese suppliers, as the odd producer out as we enter spring 2020. Speaking to CNBC earlier today about whether Microsoft could still hit its promised deadlines for the upcoming Xbox Series X as well as certain new Surface devices, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “The supply chains are all coming back. That is not our real issue. I think the bigger issue is what happens in Europe, the United States and other developed markets in the demand side going forward. But we feel good about where we are. ” Nadella did specify that “we’ll have to check back on it,” when talking about hitting specific launch deadlines, so it seems like delays could still be in the cards. However, he again stressed that “on the supply side we are getting back on rails,” and cited Microsoft’s ability to meet work-from-home demand as proof before closing the topic, ending on customer safety as his top concern. This mirrors statements from a fireside chat Nvidia held earlier this afternoon, where management reported that supply chains are due to recover 70 - 80% by the end of the quarter, with the majority of that recovery focused on personal computing. Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress also pointed to increased demand for laptops, especially in China, as a sign of market recovery, while pointing out that increased work-from-home demand has helped the company actually see profit in the laptop, mobile and virtual GPU , desktop, workstation and cloud platform sectors. The World Economic Forum released a report yesterday seemingly backing up both company’s claims, citing China’s recent lack of new coronavirus cases and loosened quarantine restrictions as signs of potential OEM recovery. According to the report, not only are most shops and restaurants reopening, but OEMs are also experimenting with chartered buses and planes to replenish their workforces, as well as exploring new labor options, like automation, and temporarily moving salaried staff to production lines usually reserved for hourly workers. COVID-19 is expected to continue to hit the Western world hard through the next few months as states like New York and Michigan begin to enforce shelter-in-place rules. However, with the virus' country of origin experiencing recovery in both supply and demand due to experiencing and consequently mitigating the virus first, hopefully the hardware industry does not have to wait that long to return to business as ... mostly ... usual.

Domestic sales at Suzuki Motorctycle India have risen over six per cent to 651,293 units between April 2019 and February 2020, from 610,091 units during the same period last year, even as demand slumped across the industry. The firm's market share in two-wheelers has gone up from 3.09 per cent to 3.94 per cent during this period, according to SIAM data. While it too has been impacted by the Coronavirus spread, Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd in an interaction with T E Narasimhan says that the company plans to strengthen its portfolio in India. Edited Excerpts: How has Covid-19 impacted your manufacturing? Will it delay your product launches? Yes, of course. SMIPL has suspended production at its manufacturing plant in Haryana till further notice. We have taken all measures to ensure the well-being of our employees and have issued a 'Work-from-Home ’advisory to our staff and associates who aren't involved with maintaining essential services. While the entire two-wheeler market is declining, how did Suzuki manage to increase sales and market share? The SMIPL’s growth momentum is attributed to our growing primary and secondary network. However, it is not only the increased footprint that has contributed but in most of our strong markets also we have registered growth over last year. We attribute this to increasing brand acceptance for our products and the strong customer connect our dealers have been able to establish with our customers. While all our products are gaining traction in the market, a large part of our growth is attributable to our increased participation in the scooter market. The Suzuki Access 125 is fast emerging as a category leader. We have also got incremental volumes through our premium Burgman Street scooter which has also been gaining po[CENSORED]rity across the country. What is your urban-rural sales mix? We do not distinguish between rural and urban customers. Instead, we prefer to put our efforts to develop a particular geography brand, based on customer preferences for scooters and premium motorcycles in that particular area. While we are continuously working on increasing our geographical footprint, our strongest markets continue to be the South and West. What is Suzuki's product strategy? Will it focus only on scooter or will give a thrust to bikes as well? Suzuki globally has been known for performance-oriented motorcycles. Moreover, we believe that inherently, the Indian customers ’preference is visibly shifting towards performance motorcycles. By virtue of our basic capabilities, we feel we are well poised to cater to this demand. In order to strengthen our motorcycle portfolio, we have entered the 250cc segment this fiscal, with the launch of Suzuki Gixxer 250, which has received overwhelming response. The Suzuki Access 125 is the best-selling scooter whereas Burgman Street has been our relatively recent premium offering in the scooter space, which has been gaining po[CENSORED]rity. We are planning to continue consolidating its scooter offerings in times to come. Moreover, in line with our forte of designing and manufacturing value packed performance oriented motorcycles, we plan to introduce some new scooters and motorcycles in greater than 125cc category in times to come. We are also closely working with SMC, Japan to develop electric two-wheeler for Indian market though there is need to go long way in terms of developing infrastructure and technology for EVs in the country. What is the split between your bikes and scooters? At present, our scooter to motorcycle split is around 90:10. With the introduction of the All New Gixxer Series earlier this year and our heightened efforts however, we aim to achieve a ratio of 80:20 in the next financial year. Any plans to invest further in India? Since SMIPL’s entry in the India in 2006, we have invested Rs 1000 crore for product and infrastructural development. At present, our manufacturing plant at Village Kherki Daula in Gurugram, Haryana has a production capacity of one million units per annum. Once we attain the maximum capacity, we will take necessary steps to ramp up the production capacity.

Tonight's episode of married at fist sight is proving to be a double whammy! Not only is it Dinner Party night, which let’s face it, is the best night of the week thanks to all the drama that it brings, but tonight we also got a special, ever before done in the experiment treat. We got to watch on as each couple saw their partner’s audition tape from the show! And boy were they revealing! Let’s take Stacey and Michael’s for example… Michael's wasn’t all too shocking really. In his tape, he was pretty cocky, told the producers that he wanted to find a “stereotypical ditzy blonde” with fake lips and fake boobs, and admitted that he can often be flirty with other girls while in a relationship. Shock horror really. But what was a little bit sweet was that after watching back the tape Michael admitted that he’s a completely different person now and he thinks that all it took was finding the right girl (Stacey) to help change him. Then we got to Stacey's tape. Now this was interesting. One of the producers in her audition asked Stacey about all of the designer gear that she was wearing, pointing out her Rolex watch and Givenchy handbag. “How do you afford that?” the producer asked Stacey flat out. Stacey looked pretty uncomfortable before finally admitting, “You might have to ask my ex”, implying that he bought her the expensive items as gifts. Now, we've come to love Stacey throughout this experiment, but at the beginning a lot of people were saying that she seemed like a bit of a gold digger, seeing as she only really started to like Michael on their wedding day after finding out he's loaded. Of course, we’re not saying that she is a gold digger, but she did just admit in her last relationship she had a guy buying her really nice things ... Look it just doesn’t look too good okay! But anyway, that’s how Stacey has designer everything, in case you were wondering. It’s thanks to her ex. Speaking of her ex, Stacey also admitted that she has cheated in a past relationship, admitting that she cheated on her ex after he cheated on her in a ‘tit for tat’ sort of move. This left Michael quite shocked and wondering whether it was still in Stacey’s nature to be vengeful like that. Is it Stacey? Is it? After all, there are rumors circling that Stacey cheated on Michael while he cheated on her with Hayley… Like we said, these audition tapes sure brought up some interesting things ...
