  1. When I see our wedding photos, it’s like looking at someone else’s One cold, crisp evening in February 2016, I went on a white-water kayaking course in Hertfordshire. I’d had lessons, but I was still a beginner and my skills weren’t as strong as the flow of the water. I spun, flipped and tipped. I heard a loud thud. I didn’t know which way was up. There was a sharp pain on my brow below my helmet, water red like wine, tossing and whirling me in the current. There were shouts and ropes thrown, my coach scooping me to safety. The duty manager picked me up, then called an ambulance. In hospital, I realised something was wrong. I couldn’t remember my name, and everything made me laugh, even being asked to lie down for the CT scan. I thought my husband, Richard, was my dad, and my daughter was my sister. The doctor told Richard I’d be better in a few weeks. But six disorienting months later, after an MRI, I was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, and cognitive, communication and memory difficulties caused by my head injury. Things changed after the accident. Before, I was the chief at home. I organised the household and sorted any issues with our then-teenage daughters, Lucy-Rose and Caitlyn. Richard and I shared aspirations, but I made things happen. I had more oomph. It was annoying sometimes. He said he was laid-back; I said that wasn’t the word I’d use. But we worked well together. My amnesia frustrated us. I couldn’t remember anything about Richard. I was living with a stranger. So was he. Bewildered and overwhelmed, I cried daily. Richard never criticised; he just encouraged me. I’d forget I’d turned on the cooker. He’d ask: “Is something burning?” His approach helped me stay calm. We’d smile and say: “Oops.” We loved the outdoors. Our honeymoon included quad biking, cycling and skiing in Scotland. After the accident, I stopped going out because I couldn’t recognise people, places or events. I had to leave my learning-support job and teacher-training programme. My five-second memory wouldn’t get me through. Nor my lack of self-awareness. I had a personality change. Before, I’d been capable, liked and in control, and that person had gone. I got into a low place. When we look at our wedding photos, it’s like being shown someone else’s pictures. It looks nice, the people are smiling. But I don’t remember it. I feel sad for Richard that we can’t have those shared memories. I’d ask him: “Why are you still with me?” “You’re still you,” he’d say. “I made a commitment to you. It would have been easier to walk away. But that would have said more about me than you.” Over time I watched him, asking if he felt worried and why, or happy and why. After a few years, I could hold enough information in my head to realise that I had married a really lovely person. Five months after the accident, I started adventuring again. I don’t recognise all the dangers, but Richard helps me. I’ve learned to ride a motorbike and joined a kayaking club. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/nov/18/experience-lost-my-memory-fell-in-love-husband-second-time
  2. WASHINGTON – Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday named Jack Smith to oversee the politically fraught investigations into former President Donald Trump. Smith is a career prosecutor and Garland vowed that he would carry out the job of looking into Trump in an "evenhanded and urgent manner." Smith, who according to the Department of Justice, began his prosecutorial career in 1994 as an assistant district attorney in New York, has served since 2018 as the chief prosecutor for a special court in The Hague charged with adjudicating war crimes in Kosovo. He has resigned from that position to take on the new role. It will be no easy task: Trump's announcement this week that he will run for president in 2024 has raised questions about how prosecutors will handle a difficult investigation that Trump has already dismissed as politically motivated. Trump repeatedly sought to undermine Robert Mueller, the last special counsel who investigated him. In a cable TV interview Friday, Trump called Smith's appointment as special counsel "so unfair" and "so political." Appointment:Garland appoints special counsel to oversee Trump investigations Trump:Why Trump's decision to run for president won't change his legal woes Stay in the conversation on politics:Sign up for the OnPolitics newsletter Here's what we know about special counsel Jack Smith. Who is special counsel Jack Smith? Smith has had a long career as a prosecutor. In New York, Smith prosecuted matters ranging from gang murders of police officers to civil rights violations, according to the Department of Justice. From 2008 to 2010, he served with the International Criminal Court, where he supervised "sensitive investigations of foreign government officials and militia for war crimes," according to a Department of Justice biography. In 2010, Smith returned to the Justice Department to serve as chief of the Public Integrity Section, where he led a team of more than 30 prosecutors who handled public corruption and election crimes cases across the United States, the Justice Department said. In 2015, he served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, later becoming the Acting United States Attorney. "As far as I'm concerned, he's the best person for the job," said David Schwendiman, who preceded Smith as a Kosovo war crimes prosecutor in the International Criminal Court. "He's brilliant. He's tough. He's independent. He's nonpartisan... Based on all I know about him, he's a man of integrity." Schwendiman said Smith's international experience has also prepared him for what promises to be an intently politically-charged appointment. "He took the position that I had, and three quarters of what you do as an executive prosecutor in the war crimes world, particularly when you're talking about something like Kosovo, is to clear the political air so that your people can do the job, provide a political umbrella and maintain independence and integrity," Schwendiman said. What will special counsel Jack Smith investigate? Smith will oversee a multi-pronged investigation into Trump's alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election and the transfer of highly classified government documents to his Florida estate after exiting the White House. Garland said Smith would oversee the investigation into whether "any person or entity" interfered with the transfer of power after the 2020 election. The department has been investigating alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election and the summoning of the mob last year that led to the deadly Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. The second investigation involves the handling of classified documents and other records that were discovered during a search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in August. "Jack Smith is the consummate professional and career DOJ prosecutor," tweeted Andrew Weissmann, a former federal prosecutor and a New York University law professor. "Not a political bone in his body. And a skilled and fast prosecutor who does not let the grass grow under his feet." link: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2022/11/18/jack-smith-special-counsel-trump-investigations/10728873002/
  3. Smartprof plans to dominate Morocco’s private tutoring market while expanding more in North and West Africa. Rabat - Morocco’s private tutoring marketplace Smartprof recently raised $110,000 in pre-seed funding from UM6P Ventures, Plug and Play, and business angels. In an interview with Morocco World News, Smartprof co-founder Mustapha Faiz stated that the startup, whose valuation remains undisclosed, aims to use the funding to expand its presence in Morocco and West Africa. “Smartprof is currently present in two main regions: Grand Casablanca and Rabat and we are looking to expand in other major Moroccan cities: Agadir, Marrakech, Dakhla, Tangier, Oujda, Meknes,” Faiz explained. In addition to increasing its share in the Moroccan market, Smartprof plans to “start expanding in other African countries in the upcoming months,” the co-founder said. “Our ambition is to become a one-stop shop platform for private tutors in West and North Africa” Today, Smartprof offers one-on-one or group live interactive sessions with the support of a relatively small team. However, the team is expected to exceed 10 members over the coming weeks as the management, Mustapha and Hamza Faiz and Ali Faouzi, recruits a “small army of developers” to improve the quality of the “product by adding new functionalities and making it scalable.” Smartprof is currently “the only major player [in Morocco] in terms of on-demand private tutoring,” Faiz told MWN, explaining that “other Ed tech actors provide pre-recorded educational content.” Read Also: Coursera CEO: ‘Businesses, Schools Will Never be the Same’ Talking about competition in the Moroccan market, Faiz stressed that Smartprof’s “team, operational efficiency, and ability to translate the best tutoring experience through our product” differentiate the startup from other edtech solutions that provide “e-learning, LMS [learning management systems] or school information management systems.” While the Moroccan edtech landscape remains “very small” and “not substantial,” Faiz expressed gratitude for the support of “different actors and facilitators such as l'École Centrale Casablanca, an engineering school or Startgate, Morocco's biggest startup campus." Morocco’s edtech sector remains in its early stages of development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to generalize e-learning solutions for all. Thus, the shift towards the digitization of certain aspects of learning is expected to grow exponentially over the coming years and innovative solutions, led by the local startup ecosystem, are set to define the future of education in Morocco and Africa. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/11/352455/moroccos-smartprof-eyes-west-african-edtech-markets-with-new-investment

  5. FTX is said to be facing investigations from the US Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, facing mounting legal challenges over the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange, may have harmed his defense by speaking publicly in recent days, legal experts said. Bankman-Fried has sought to explain the implosion of FTX and disparaged government regulators in posts on Twitter and conversations with reporters. Attorneys said such statements will likely make life more difficult for the defense lawyers seeking to manage fallout from the exchange's demise and navigate multiple federal investigations. “There's this old saying that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. The reverse is also true. An individual who is the subject of an investigation and tries to defend themselves in the court of public opinion has a fool for a lawyer,” said Justin Danilewitz, a white-collar defense lawyer at law firm Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr. In a conversation with a Vox reporter published this week, Bankman-Fried blamed FTX's collapse in part on “messy accounting,” expressed regret at his decision to file for bankruptcy and denigrated US regulators in profane terms. He later said he did not intend for the conversation to be made public. FTX is now facing investigations from the US Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, sources have told Reuters. On Tuesday, a group of crypto investors filed a class action against Bankman-Fried and others who promoted FTX. Bankman-Fried's statements have already been cited in FTX's US bankruptcy proceedings. The exchange's lawyers said in court papers on Thursday that he was undermining their efforts with his "incessant and disruptive tweeting.” He has become the latest high-profile figure to continue to speak publicly despite facing serious legal scrutiny, joining a group that has included Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, ex-pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli and former US President Donald Trump. Controlling The Story Lawyers almost always advise clients in litigation or facing government investigations not to speak about issues related to the case. Such statements could become evidence in court and could undermine a carefully crafted defense. Social media has made it easier for clients with large public platforms to try to mount their own defense, experts said. “The basic question is who controls the story,” said Stephen Gillers, a law professor at New York University and an expert on legal ethics. “From the lawyer's point of view, once he or she is hired, it's the lawyer who controls the story as far as public consumption goes.” At least one attorney, Martin Flumenbaum of law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, has already parted ways with Bankman-Fried, though the lawyer did not blame the 30-year-old entrepreneur's controversial statements. “We informed Mr. Bankman-Fried several days ago after the filing of the FTX bankruptcy that conflicts have arisen that precluded us from representing him," Flumenbaum said in a statement to Reuters. Flumenbaum declined to describe the conflicts. A onetime lawyer for convicted financier Michael Milken, Flumenbaum is currently defending Christian Larsen, the founder and chair of crypto payment and exchange company Ripple Labs Inc, in a high-profile lawsuit filed by the SEC. His law firm represents many other financial industry clients. Bankman-Fried, who did not respond to questions about his legal team this week, has hired Gregory Joseph, a criminal defense lawyer at law firm Joseph Hage Aaronson in New York, and Stanford University law professor David Mills as members of his legal team, according to a report from Semafor. Both of Bankman-Fried's parents are on the faculty of Stanford Law School. Joseph is a former president of the American College of Trial Lawyers who has written about racketeering law and rules of evidence. Mills specializes in criminal law and white-collar crime. Neither Joseph nor Mills replied to requests for comment. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/cryptocurrency/news/ftx-founder-sam-bankman-fried-public-remarks-pose-challenge-for-his-lawyer-3534260
  6. We will show you how you can hide recent apps and dock while using Stage Manager on iPad running iPadOS and get more space on display. Stage Manager Feels Crammed in on iPad Pro? Try Hiding the Dock and Recent Apps Option to Gain More Space Stage Manager has been a hit-or-miss feature among iPad Pro users. Either you absolutely love it and take productivity to the next level, or you end up being completely unmoved by it. Things get even worse on the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro as everything looks super crammed. You can remedy it by switching to the ‘More Space’ setting by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > View. But it still doesn’t help much since the full-screen view of apps is a better choice on the smaller iPad Pro. However, you can make extra room on the display by hiding the recent apps from the left-hand side of the display and the dock at the bottom. They will go away and will only come into view when you swipe toward the center of the display from the bottom or the left. This is especially important if you have an 11-inch iPad Pro - this is not exactly an issue on the 12.9-inch model, depending on how you look at things. Let me show you how you can disable the recent apps and dock in Stage Manager. Tutorial Step 1. First of all, you have to enable Stage Manager. Pull down Control Center from the top right-hand corner of the display and then tap on the Stage Manager icon. Step 2. Once enabled, tap and hold on the Stage Manager icon to reveal more options. Step 3. See those two checkmarks? The one at the bottom is for the dock, and the one on the left is for recent apps - tap to turn both off. You now have more space for apps side-by-side in Stage Manager. I highly recommend enabling the 'More Space' option from Settings if you want to make good use of the 11-inch display. Everything looks nicer that way. In case you're wondering how you can jump to another stack of apps or access the dock, simply swipe to the left side of the display or swipe up from the bottom. If you have a Magic Keyboard connected, then take the mouse pointer to the left or toward the bottom. link: https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-hide-dock-and-recent-apps-in-stage-manager/

  11. Fallout 5 is likely a very long way off Fallout 5 is officially in development, but unfortunately likely a long way away from being released. It's easily one of the most anticipated games around, especially given that we haven't had a singleplayer Fallout game since 2015. For now, it seems like Bethesda is busy working on other games. Starfield is the first game that is set to release before Fallout 5, and luckily it's not far off. Beyond that, we have The Elder Scrolls 6 to look forward to, though that's clearly not launching for a while yet. After that, we can finally expect Fallout 5, though we may all be old and grey by that point. In terms of official Fallout 5 info, there certainly isn't a lot out there currently. What we do have are comments from Bethesda, Todd Howard, and even some rumors that have cropped up over the last couple of years. Some point to a possible setting, while others are a little harder to discern. For now, here's everything we know about Fallout 5 so far. As new details are revealed, you'll find this page updated with the latest news. While there's currently no confirmed release date for Fallout 5, there's plenty of speculation. We've seen optimistic predictions but given Bethesda's focus is resolutely on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, nevermind the fact that the game hasn't even been revealed, we're not expecting it for a long time. As it stands, we're expecting Fallout 5's release date to be many years down the road, really stretching the previous seven-year gap between Fallout 3 (2008) and Fallout 4 (2015). At the moment, 2025 or later feels more realistic. It depends on how far along the Bethesda teams are with each game. However, given that, in a November 2021 interview with IGN, Todd Howard said the studio has a "one-pager on Fallout 5" – a broad overview of what they want it to be – we think it'll be a while before we hear anything more. What's more, speaking to IGN(opens in new tab) in June 2022, Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 would be Bethesda's project after The Elder Scrolls 6. With that game still in pre-production and a release likely a few years off, we imagine we could be in for a long wait for the next Fallout. Platforms for Fallout 5 haven't been confirmed but it's likely we'll see the next Fallout release for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC. If we're not looking at the next-generation of consoles by this point, that is. PS5, however, is another matter. It stands to reason that Microsoft and Bethesda would make this an exclusive title because of the former's purchase of the latter. However, Xbox has said exclusivity deals on new games from Bethesda will be decided on a case-by-case basis so it's hard to be certain. At the very least, we should expect Fallout 5 to be a title for Xbox Game Pass. Considering console lifecycles usually last about seven years, it seems likely we would see Fallout 5 release on these systems before the next, next-generation systems are going to be introduced. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/fallout-5-release-date-trailer-news-gameplay
