  1. Social media post by Japanese manufacturer hints at new car with ‘Hybrid Reborn’ slogan Toyota will reveal a new hybrid model – understood to be a successor to the Prius – on Wednesday 16 November. The car was previewed by an image posted to the firm’s Japanese social media accounts today, featuring the strapline “Hybrid Reborn” underneath a headlight. This indicates that the new model will use a different hybrid powertrain to today’s car, such as a plug-in hybrid system, or a motor-generator set-up (where a petrol engine generates electricity, while an electric motor drives the wheels) as used in the Nissan Qashqai e-Power. 2. After he was given the all-clear I found myself drowning in grief and worry about his future. Then came a series of chance conversations … It is not my place to describe in intimate detail what happened to my teenage son. Suffice to say, in 2021 he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, had a 12.5-hour operation on his 14th birthday to remove half of his upper jaw, and then went through eight months of intensive chemotherapy. For most of a year, he spent more time in the hospital than out. If he wasn’t being monitored for chemo drugs, he was being treated for their side-effects: the nausea, the fainting, the headaches, the nosebleeds that wouldn’t stop. “We don’t give this course of chemo to adults,” said the oncologist. To my raised eyebrows, she answered: “They wouldn’t be able to take it.” Covid meant that only his dad and I were allowed, one at a time, on the cancer ward. It was a surreal world of blue curtains, masked nurses and endlessly beeping machines. During my 10-hour shifts, I tried to encourage edifying activities such as French practice or reading, but most of the time my son and I either slept or watched crap television. The hospital didn’t have the internet, so we overdosed on episodes of Dinner Date, Taskmaster and reality renovation shows. When my son was well enough, we laughed at everything, pretending to ignore the tall bags of neon-yellow chemo-poison draining into the tube in his chest. I tried to keep his (and my) spirits up by planning what we would do after his treatment was over – a horse trek in Iceland, a gig at Wembley. Each week, we counted off the chemotherapy remaining: “Only 18 more weeks to go”; “We’re halfway through”; “We’ve completed the doxorubicin and cisplatin, now there’s only the methotrexate to get through.” When things got bad, I promised him: “One day this will be over. Life will be back to normal.” Then the treatment finished, and after MRIs, scans and blood tests, my son was pronounced clear. In the weeks that followed, I watched with joy as his hair, eyelashes and eyebrows grew back and he stopped resembling a sickly medieval Madonna. I blew my savings on the now fabled trip to Iceland and the pristine air, riding and long hikes restored his colour. His dad took him caving in the Wye valley. He went to his first gig at Wembley. In September, he was able to take himself off to school for the first time in a year, his blue knapsack crammed with GCSE books. He was gaming online with his friends, improvising jazz on the piano and, to everyone’s delight, won a cross-country race at school. By every measure, his life was back on course. 3. WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden's unrelenting election optimism may not have been entirely misplaced. Biden was insistent throughout the fall that his presidency could defy the odds and that the Democratic Party would not suffer the steep midterm losses that were associated with his predecessors. As of Wednesday morning, Democrats were still expected to lose their House majority, with dozens of races too close to call. But a handful of front-line lawmakers who were elected in a 2018 wave and are seen as rising stars in the Democratic Party have already been declared safe. They include Reps. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Sharice Davids of Kansas. Democratic Reps. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey were also reelected. The big surprise of the night was Pennsylvania, where Democrats succeeded in flipping a seat with John Fetterman. Here are four other takeaways about what happened Tuesday night: Campaigning on Biden's agenda (even without him) worked Biden did not visit Nevada, Georgia or Arizona, where incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly was fending off his Republican challenger in early results. He also avoided battleground New Hampshire, where Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan easily defeated Republican state Sen. Dan Boldoc. One of his last stops on the campaign trail was to Pennsylvania, where he stumped for Fetterman and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro. Fetterman won a close race against former President Donald Trump's chosen candidate Mehmet Oz, while Shapiro cruised to victory over his election-denying Republican opponent Doug Mastriano. He said he "refuted" how his "past conduct" had been characterised. However, he said the claims had become a distraction from the government's "good work". He added he would comply with a complaints process concerning messages he sent a colleague, and that he had apologised to the recipient. LINK: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63563263
  7. A new study reveals that the rough skin of polar bears helps them stand on ice Polar bears are known for their pale fur that reflects the white of their natural environment. Confined to arctic spaces, this species is perfectly adapted to the ecosystem in which it lives, but its physical characteristics never cease to amaze scientists. For years, experts have studied their paws and have found that they are smaller compared to other bears and even smaller in proportion to their body . However, there is something that the researchers had not explored until now: the pads at the end of their limbs. We suggest: They find a unique po[CENSORED]tion of polar bears that does not depend on ice in the Arctic to survive unique pads The study published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface revealed that polar bears' pads are filled with microstructures called papillae. These structures cause a roughness that increases their traction force , which allows them to walk freely on the slippery ice that surrounds them. The non-slip quality of its legs is made up of several factors such as the fact that the pad surface is much larger and the papillae are much longer compared to other bear specimens. 8. Porsche Boxster and Cayman will ditch combustion by mid-decade, and the EV convertible has hit the road first New spy shots claiming to show the electric successor to the wildly successful Porsche 718 Boxster have surfaced, giving a first look at Stuttgart's highly anticipated third EV model line. The next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster are set to adopt a bespoke electric sports car platform designed to mimic the current combustion cars’ mid-engined characters and which could go on to underpin future Audi and Lamborghini models. It has been confirmed that Porsche intends for the next-generation 718 duo to be offered exclusively with electric drivetrains, and that it intends for them to be on sale by the middle of the decade. It is likely the electric two-seaters will be the third electric model line in the Porsche line-up, following several derivatives of the Taycan and the arrival of the Porsche Macan EV in 2024. 9. Urban planning has historically been framed around ‘very white male’ concepts. But with better, safer and more accessible public infrastructure, we can build woman-friendly cities hauffeur mums are a well-known Australian phenomenon. A lack of convenient transport options coupled with gendered roles has made many suburban women (and their children) car-dependent, whether they like it or not. And, more often than not, the demands of household chores and child rearing fall more heavily on women. The car is the default option because public transport services are a poor fit for the complex travel patterns of working mothers. Schools and childcare are often not conveniently located close to either home or the workplace. Managing drop-offs in peak hour while trying to get to work on time can be a nightmare. Sydney downtown, blurred intersection people and traffic in a sunny day at dusk Australian cities among worst performing on walkability and public transport access Read more Lower workforce participation and higher rates of part-time and casual work among women are also sometimes due simply to the fact that women can’t get to work quickly and efficiently. So many of the issues women face are a result of urban planning that hasn’t properly considered their needs. As one planner explained to researchers: The way that we learn and do planning in Australia is a derived Victorian model. The reasons why development is regulated and the way that planning is regulated and the language we use is hugely around those very white male concepts. These gendered impacts need to be placed at the heart of all stages of urban planning, an approach known as gender mainstreaming. Until this happens, our cities won’t be woman-friendly. A blind spot in the quest for gender equality The federal government’s recent Women’s Budget Statement recognises that “gender inequality is holding Australia back”. It commits the government to “advancing gender equality as a national priority and closing the gender gaps in our community”. The government promises significant investments to support structural changes in favour of women. Key topics include women’s economic equality, safety, health and wellbeing. Better financial access – to housing, childcare, healthcare and so on – is a recurring theme of the statement. This is all highly desirable. What the federal budget fails to explicitly recognise is that poor urban planning causes, or makes worse, so many of the difficulties facing Australian women. How is urban planning to blame? Advertisement The budget statement highlights, for example, the housing affordability crisis and a lack of shelters for homeless, battered women. But these issues are also part and parcel of urban planning. LINK: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/nov/08/the-challenge-for-chauffeur-mums-navigating-a-city-that-wasnt-planned-for-women

  11. WASHINGTON — The battle for control of the U.S. Senate will be decided by a handful of states Tuesday, but because of different laws for counting mail ballots, final results in some critical contests might not be clear on election night. Democrats are expected to outperform Republicans overwhelmingly among Americans who vote by mail – like they did in 2020 – potentially creating a misleading picture in some states as results trickle in. Look for a possible "blue shift" in states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin showing Republican candidates with large leads as ballots cast on Election Day are tallied first then showing Democrats narrowing margins as absentee and mail ballots are added to results. What would a GOP Congress look like? A lot of investigations and maybe impeachment. It was this same dynamic that former President Donald Trump exploited in the 2020 election to falsely declare he won the election prematurely before mail ballots in multiple states had been tallied. "It's important for us to be patient while the votes are being counted," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. Fact check:Biden encouraged Americans to be patient as ballots are counted in 2022 Here's a breakdown of the timelines for final unofficial results in states with the most competitive Senate races. Prepare to potentially wait Pennsylvania: Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz State law in Pennsylvania does not allow for the processing of mail ballots before Election Day, meaning mail and absentee ballots can't be taken out of envelopes, verified or scanned before 7 a.m. Tuesday. The GOP-led Pennsylvania Legislature has ignored calls from Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf and local election administrators to change the law to allow the processing of such ballots before Election Day. More than 1.1 million Pennsylvania voters had returned mail ballots as of Monday. Leigh Chapman, Pennsylvania's acting secretary of state, said counting all of Pennsylvania's ballots will be a "days-long process." link" https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2022/11/08/2022-midterms-states-could-take-longest-election-results/8268399001/
  12. Congress passed a 1978 law to stop the forced assimilation of Native American children. Now the law is being challenged by non-Native families who say its focus on race violates the 14th Amendment. WASHINGTON – Some of Autumn Adams' most vivid childhood memories involve sitting in a courtroom or talking with child protective services after her father died, her mother was deemed unfit to be a parent and she was thrust suddenly into foster care. Adams was 9 years old. Looking back, she partly credits a 1978 law setting special rules for custody of Native American children for helping her navigate the trauma of that time. The law, which prioritizes Native American families for the custody of Native children, meant she was able to keep her bond with the Yakama Nation even as the rest of her world fell apart. Adams was placed with an aunt and then a grandmother, both of whom lived on the Yakama Reservation in Washington state. "Having that connection not only to my family but to my culture through my family members, I was able to pull through one of the darkest and most trying times in my life," said Adams, now in her second year of law school at Arizona State University. "I was able to rely on my culture to pull me through and keep me grounded." The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday in a case challenging that law, the Indian Child Welfare Act, which Congress approved to stop a decadeslong practice of attempting to assimilate Native American children by removing them from their tribes and placing them with non-Native families or in boarding schools. link" https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2022/11/07/supreme-court-arguments-native-american-adoption-icwa/8265628001/
  14. Some were great, some not so much. But whichever the case, most of these cars were clean forgotten If you’re one of those people who likes to out-geek your car-mad mates, cast your eye over this lot and see how many you’re familiar with. All of these automotive cul de sacs sold in tiny numbers and as a result they’re now pretty much forgotten. In some cases that’s entirely deserved as we don’t fancy the Asia Rocsta or Sao Penza being revived any time soon. But not all of these cars were dogs – some deserved a better fate:
  15. Sales of the tinned meat are on the rise as households tighten their belts. But you can do more with it than you thought There is at least one hint of a silver lining to the cost of living crisis. That’s right, Spam is back. According to Waitrose, sales are up 36% this year, as consumers turn their backs on more expensive fresh meat. But Spam – tinned cooked pork – need not be a compromise. Thanks to American GIs, who introduced it during the second world war to the Asia-Pacific nations, the product has become a mainstay of their cuisine. During the festival of Chuseok, South Korean supermarkets brim with elaborate Spam gift sets. In 2014, Burger King in Japan introduced a Spam and cheese burger. The biggest consumers of Spam globally are the people of the tiny Pacific island of Guam; not only do they each eat on average 16 tins a year, but Spam produces a special variety just for islanders. Basically, you can do more with a tin of Spam than you might have thought. Here, top chefs and food experts explain how they like to use it. Spam french fries with cheesy kimchi dipping sauce Judy Joo, Seoul Bird, London Spam has a long, beloved history in Korea because of the war. My mum used to feed me fried Spam and eggs for breakfast, and rice porridge studded with cubes of Spam as an after-school snack. This is a recipe from my book Judy Joo’s Korean Soul Food. To make the cheesy kimchi dipping sauce, whisk together 1 tbsp cornflour and 340ml evaporated milk in a small saucepan over a low heat until smooth. Turn up the heat. Once the mixture has thickened and is bubbling, reduce the heat to low and stir in 125g grated cheddar and 3 to 4 tbsp chopped cabbage kimchi. Cook until smooth and velvety. Remove from heat, and keep in a warm place. Advertisement Meanwhile, cut a block of Spam lengthways into six slices, and cut each slice into four even matchsticks. Set up three dipping stations: 80g flour, two beaten eggs, and 160g panko breadcrumbs. Coat the Spam sticks with each in turn. Heat 10cm of oil in a wide heavy-based saucepan to 180C (160C fan)/350F/gas 4. Working in small batches, fry the Spam sticks until golden brown. Place on a rack to drain the oil. Serve immediately with the cheesy kimchi dipping sauce on the side. link and photo : https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/nov/07/spam-is-back-chefs-on-their-favourite-recipes-from-katsu-curry-to-spam-fries-with-cheesy-kimchi-sauce

  20. BIOS Flashback boards let you update without a 12th Gen CPU on B660, too. imgur --> https://imgur.com/a/KhBP9Q0 Intel's new 13th Gen "Raptor Lake" CPUs are the fastest on the market, but don't come cheap. One way to save money on your build is by using a last-gen Intel 600 series motherboard, since those boards use the LGA 1700 socket Raptor Lake requires and Intel says that, all things being equal (like board power delivery and cooling abilities), you should get the same performance as on a 700 series board. (Be sure to check our best motherboards page for the best options we've tested.) But there’s a catch. Though all 600 series motherboards can support Raptor Lake chips in theory, most (or at least many) will need to have a newer BIOS installed to recognize 13th Gen processors. Try popping a Core i5-13600K, Core i7-13700K or Core i9-13900K into your 600-series motherboard without the right BIOS and it won’t even POST. That's a shame, because the cheapest Z790 motherboard we found at the time we wrote this cost $169, while the least expensive previous-gen Z690 motherboard was $129. And if you aren't going to overclock your CPU, the less-expensive H610 or B660 chipset boards, which are best suited for pairing with a Core i5 or Core i7, can sell for as little as $89 or $99. We contacted the four major motherboard vendors (ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI) to ask if any of their 600-series boards will work with Raptor Lake chips out of the box. Asus and Gigabyte said that some of their recently-produced boards might ship with a Raptor Lake-compatible BIOS, but there’s no reasonable way to know that before you purchase. Asus said that you can tell which BIOS version a motherboard comes with by looking at a sticker(opens in new tab) on the board itself, but that won’t do you much good unless you are buying at a brick-and-mortar store that allows you to open the box up before purchasing. Most (if not all) 600 series boards have BIOS updates available that add Alder Lake support, but you need to be able to download and install those updates before you try to boot with a 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU. If you have access to an older Intel 12th Gen “Alder Lake” CPU, you can put the older CPU in the board, boot into and update the BIOS in the UEFI interface (see how to enter the BIOS if you don’t know how to get there), and then you should be good to go. But most people buying a Raptor Lake CPU and new motherboard today don’t have a last-gen processor just lying around the house. At one point, AMD, which used the same AM4 socket across five different processor generations, had a loaner program where the company would send you an old CPU to use for the BIOS upgrade, but Intel has nothing like that. So, if you want to buy a 600 series motherboard to use with a Raptor Lake CPU, your best bet is to buy a model with BIOS Flashback, a feature that allows you to update the BIOS with no CPU installed at all. You just put the BIOS update on a USB Flash drive, plug it into your board and hit the Flashback button on the motherboard and wait a few minutes while it updates. To help you find out which models you can use to save yourself some money on your new build, we’ve generated a list of all the Intel 600 series motherboards with BIOS Flashback that we could find for sale. We found 72 600 series motherboards in total that have BIOS Flashback (Gigabyte calls the feature Q-Flash Plus, but it's essentially the same thing). There are roughly another 30 models, most of them Gigabyte SKUs, that are listed on the manufacturer’s website, but that we couldn’t find for sale in the U.S. link: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-600-series-boards-for-raptor-lake
  21. With shifts in consumer values, buying power, access, and technology shaping an innovative and dynamic luxury market, what will this mean for fashion houses, brands, and artists? Learning and exploration happen both within the classroom and outside of it at Sotheby's Institute of Art as projects arise with peers and autonomously. Student-led projects include MADE IN BED, an art magazine and website independently run and produced by the Institute's students exploring a myriad of topics. It provides global insight into the art world through a vast range of perspectives, research, and creative endeavours. In the article 'Glossy to Grunge: How Art & Fashion Are Redefining Luxury', Grace Gividen explores what happens when tastes divert from more traditional connotations of ‘premium’ and ‘luxury'. "Grunge at its most ornate was also a feature of the Botticelli Reimagined exhibition at London’s V&A Museum. It presented Botticelli’s works as being so extraordinarily embedded in the public consciousness that design and fashion both draw direct inspiration from him. The new era of gothic revival is emulating what was once a highly decorative, maximalist period, and we see this connection in the leather headwear and crosses of Chrome Hearts. In the same way, brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and exhibitions like Botticelli Reimagined are offering consumers a more formal, upscale approach to a grunge aesthetic. Art and fashion are constantly redefining how consumers engage with and purchase items. Today’s consumers buying into luxury categories are striving to be a part of something cultural, novel, and sensorial. The expressions of grunge we’re now seeing in luxury are broad, considered, and have clarity of thought. It’s also revisionist in the same way that we’re now seeing young contemporary artists like Mario Ayala choosing to work in graffiti with bold acrylics. All of this suggests that the influence of grunge has staying power and will continue to diversify. There will be further exploration of less serious, more ironic approaches to grunge, creating works and pieces with high impact, hype, and ‘talkability.’ At the same time, it will be taken more seriously as the sustainable benefits of buying less and using for longer merge with greater levels of craftsmanship in individual pieces and it will almost certainly become more valuable." Read the full piece, here About MADE IN BED MADE IN BED is produced by students from Sotheby’s Institute of Art-London. The magazine aims to provide valuable insight and criticism into the global art world through explorations and projects initiated by the Institute’s MA students. It takes its name from London’s iconic Bedford Square, referencing the home of the Institute’s London campus, where most students can be found furthering their knowledge, writing our articles, engaging in international discourse, and exploring new frontiers. link: https://www.sothebysinstitute.com/news-and-events/news/art-fashion-are-redefining-luxury
