The viral picture left many social media users wanting to provide financial support for the young athlete. Rabat - A picture of a young boy participating in the National Cross Country Running race with almost bare feet covered in make-shift duct tape shoes is taking the internet by storm. Uploaded on Monday online by sports photographer Simo Hamdi, the picture shows the young boy, racing on the running track in Tamesna, Morocco with his small feet wrapped in duct tape, prompting online observers to conclude that the boy is too poor to own even a pair of running shoes. The picture drew widespread online attention, with many social media users asking for the contact information of the boy’s family as they wanted to provide financial support for the young athlete. Hours after the picture was first posted, pictures of the same boy posing happily with a new pair of shoes were trending, with Moroccan activist Errami Ebdelali posting a series of pictures of the boy with his mother smiling. The post was captioned “Praise be God, the smile returned to the face of the future Moroccan hero.” “The child Ahmed needs all the support he and his family have,” the caption reads. Some social media users pointed an accusatory finger at the organizing authorities, saying that the sports’ association the boy represents should have provided him with proper equipment. Morocco’s athleticism authorities under scrutiny The picture of the young athlete comes as contempt against Morocco’s athleticism authorities is already mounting, led by famous Moroccan athletes. Earlier this month, Olympic gold medalist Soufiane El Bakkali took to Instagram on Thursday to expose the sports authorities' shortcomings. “Failed plans that do not motivate players,” El Bakkali said on his Instagram. “Please reconsider.” The athlete was criticizing the award structure of the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation (FRMA), and he is not the only one. A number of ex-athletes have also taken to social media to speak against what they called the “mishandling” of Morocco’s athletic infrastructure. The athletes singled out mismanagement and corruption as the prime factors underlying Morocco’s declining performance in international sporting events. Underfunding and lack of qualified staff also negatively impact FRMA's performance as the incubator of Moroccan athletes. This month, Wydad AC’s previous coach Driss Ouajjou was said to have turned down an offer to join the federation. Behind his decision, the coach cited “inadequate technical staff” and “scouting problems,” adding him to the long list of the federation’s critics. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/01/353563/morocco-picture-of-boy-racing-in-duct-tape-shoes-goes-viral

Now that Microsoft has released DirectStorage 1.1 for PC systems using Windows, as well as current GPUs & NVMe SSDs, we are now seeing performance benchmarks of AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA's latest GPUs compared to each other. DirectStorage 1.1 improves the decompression of graphical assets in Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA, but the blue team comes out slightly better The recent benchmark test, developed by the website Compusemble, showcases the power of the technology firsthand on the site's YouTube channel. We have provided the video below for easy viewing. The API allows the CPU to reduce the number of critical cycles needed for large tasks and decompresses game assets through "highly-parallel" graphics cards without the operating system taking over and using the processor on a higher level. DirectStorage 1.1 by Microsoft limits the load placed on the processor when the NVMe storage requests data. The algorithms used in the compression and decompression of assets through DirectStorage permit higher data levels to be moved above what the NVMe SSD would generally be expected to handle but can't, and in large part, limits the time to load assets. PC Games Hardware took Compusemble's benchmark test and pitted three of the top graphics cards on the market to see which handles the decompression of data the best. The three GPUs tested by the website were: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Intel Arc A770 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 All three graphics cards were paired with the Intel Core i9-12900K processor from the Alder Lake generation. All three graphics cards processed decompression than the Intel processor by almost 2.5 times. The Intel Arc A770 GPU performed above AMD and NVIDIA regarding "asset decompression." The results show that the Intel Arc A770 can transfer and decompress assets at 16.8 GB/s, while the AMD RX 7900 XT processed the same information at 14.6 GB/s or a difference of thirteen percent. However, since the loading times were reduced from five seconds to less than a second, all three cards decompressed assets similarly, meaning either configuration would still improve with DirectStorage 1.1. link: https://wccftech.com/intel-arc-a770-performs-above-amd-nvidia-in-directstorage-1-1-performance-benchmark/

Corsair is going to launch its connector-shifting 'SHIFT' PSU lineup soon which utilizes the latest ATX 3.0 standard. These PSUs were revealed a few days ago, unofficially, and now we have the prices of the entire lineup. Corsair SHIFT ATX 3.0 PSU Lineup Starts At $115 US For 750W Model, Goes Up To $190 US For 1200W The Corsair SHIFT series PSUs have various features such as ATX 3.0 certification, three different models (CP-9020254-NA, CP-9020253-NA, and CP-9020252-NA) with each correlating with 1200W, 1000W, and 850W models, Corsair's Type 5 Gen 1 micro-fit power supply cables, a 140mm fluid dynamic bearing fan, and 80 PLUS Gold certification. Now Corsair doesn't have any visible Gen5.0 connectors on their SHIFT lineup but they will provide an adapter for use with graphics cards that make use of the 12VHPWR plugs. RELATED STORY Jason R. Wilson Corsair Shifts Power Connectors Placement On Its SHIFT PSU Lineup, Easy Cable Management The most unique aspect of this PSU lineup is that instead of having the connectors on the front, they are moved to the side. It begs to question if Corsair is on to something with its new designs & if this is the beginning of a "shift" in designing power supplies by other companies. Corsair hasn't used the Gen5 '12VHPWR' connector on the SHIFT PSUs and that may have to do with the overall clearance provided at the side of the PSU. As we know, the 12VHPWR connector needs around 35 mm of clearance before it can be bent, and most mATX or even ATX cases don't have that sort of room on the sides. As such, Corsair may have selected to go with standard 8-pin connectors that can be fed to a 12VHPWR adapter. With that said, the prices of the Corsair SHIFT PSU lineup are somewhat decent, starting at $115 US for the base 750W model. The RM850 costs just $5 US more at $120 US. The high-end lineup goes above the $150 US range starting with the $160 US RM1000 SHIFT and the flagship RM1200 'SHIFT RM1200' costing $190 US. Following is the price list: RM750 SHIFT PSU (750W) - $115 US RM850 SHIFT PSU (850W) - $120 US RM1000 SHIFT PSU (1000W) - $160 US RM1200 SHIFT PSU (1200W) - $190 US Expect more information from Corsair such as retail availability, final specifications, and more in the coming days. link: https://wccftech.com/corsairs-connector-shifting-shift-atx-3-0-psu-prices-revealed-1200w-for-189-us/

There’s a leak in the boat From never before seen maps to various models, the latest Team Fortress 2 leak has given fans a lot to mull over. The biggest Valve has seen to date; the 61GB leak includes various unreleased maps, models, PSDs (photoshop source design), and VMFs (valve map format) for Team Fortress 2. The latter is a format that stores raw map data and is used to save production-stage maps and prefabs. While the exact source of the leak is unconfirmed at present, Richter Overtime has been sharing some of its contents on Twitter(opens in new tab), including what appears to be images of these unreleased maps and models. What’s new? Cycling through all the unreleased content, fans have found some pretty interesting concepts. It seems we could have had a capture-the-flag Dustbowl map that would have integrated all three stages of Dustbowl and even some of Goldrush. If sand’s not your thing, then what about a level four turret with a teleporter wacked on top? The possibilities really do seem to be endless. Fans have been able to find a Bounty Mode test map and even in-dev templates of the original powerhouse map. This is all just after a day of research and digging, so there will definitely be more to find. The rule of three While I have given up on any chance of a third installment in the Team Fortress series, there are still some who keep up hope. With all of these unused maps and data, why shouldn’t Valve pick the series back up? Unfortunately, despite all this content, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a new Team Fortress soon. It’s been almost 16 years since Team Fortress 2 was released, and Valve has never officially stated plans to develop another entry in the series. This isn’t a huge surprise as, historically, the developer doesn’t deal in threes. Portal got shelved after two games, and Half-Life fans have been waiting over a decade for the much-desired Half-Life 3. So the possibility of TF3 seems extremely unlikely at this point. All we can hope now is that this content isn’t completely dead and buried. Even if the developer isn’t keen on creating a new series entry, all these unreleased maps and modes could make for a very hefty and welcome update. But I’m not holding my breath. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/huge-tf2-leak-reveals-scrapped-weapons-and-maps

A whole host of new Legendary items for each class and numerous quality-of-life changes round out the latest update for Blizzard's mobile ARPG. he latest update for Diablo Immortal is around the corner, and it's set to ring in the Lunar New Year with an event that will have players rewarded for their generosity. They say that the act of giving a gift is its own reward, and that is certainly true of the upcoming Tong-Shi's Renewal event in Blizzard's mobile ARPG. Completing various daily tasks will earn players Red Bags filled with various rewards which can be gifted to friends. It's always nice to receive gifts, but players will want to send out as many Red Bags as they receive, as they will earn rewards for giving gifts as well. It's a win-win. Now Playing: Diablo Immortal Video Review Completing event tasks will additionally reward Tseym, a currency that can be turned in for additional rewards and will contribute towards server-wide milestones that, when reached, will reward a random Legendary item. The event will kick off alongside the update's arrival on January 16 on servers in the Americas and on January 15 everywhere else in the world. Speaking of Legendary items, the new update is chock-full of new ones for each class that can only be found while playing on one of the new, higher-level Hell difficulties that were added as part of the game's major Terror's Tide update. The new items are meant to serve as an extra incentive to climb the difficulty ladder, and provide new bonuses to enable specific types of builds for each class. Finding duplicate Legendary items will additionally be more rewarding, as extracting the same Legendary power multiple times will now improve the power of that item's Legendary attributes, like certain skills receiving bonus damage, increased cooldown reduction, and more. There are a number of positive quality-of-life changes coming in the update, too. Dungeons will now support cross-server matchmaking and a dungeon set item is now guaranteed to drop after running dungeons for multiple times with no set drops. There are also some changes to the game's Immortal and Shadow faction systems. The update additionally sees the return of the po[CENSORED]r Fractured Plane event and introduces a new battle pass. For the full details, check out Blizzard's official patch notes. Despite Blizzard ending its longstanding publishing agreement with Chinese partner NetEase Games, development on Diablo Immortal, which was co-developed by NetEase under a separate agreement, will continue. According to Activision Blizzard's Q3 financial results, Diablo Immortal has done extremely well in China, where it has sat among the top 10 grossing mobile games in the country since its launch in Summer 2022. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/in-diablo-immortal-lunar-new-year-event-giving-gifts-is-just-as-good-as-receiving-them/1100-6510577/

"I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore," says Disco Elysium. "Want to be a minotaur then?" says Sovereign Syndicate. As our associate editor Tyler Colp recently put it, the fate of Disco Elysium 2 is uncertain, but other games might make up for it. One such potential plug for the Disco-shaped hole in our hearts is Sovereign Syndicate, a CRPG set in an alternate Victorian London. You can tell it's an alternate reality because the menu screen shows it's got zeppelins, as all alternate realities are required to have by law. The minotaur's a bit of a giveaway as well. While the final version of Sovereign Syndicate will have three player-characters to choose from—Clara the corsair, Otto the automaton, and Atticus the minotaur—the current demo is restricted to the minotaur. An alcoholic in a top hat, Atticus Daley is a small-time illusionist and big-time loser who begins the game in extremely Disco Elysium fashion by waking up from a bender with a head full of voices and a gut full of bad booze. The similarities extend to the interface, which scrolls dialogue down the right-hand side of the screen as abilities like Wit and Spryness offer their opinions, each illustrated with a stark portrait. One difference is the addition of an external voice called the Crone, who the other chatterers are upset to find cohabiting your skull. The first quest in my journal is to figure out who she is and what she's up to. More pressing matters emerge in the shape of the masked stranger who wakes me up, insists we have business, then waits for me to pull myself together. This opening scene involves meandering around a grubby London street, examining discarded junk. From a newspaper and a poster I pick up a couple more quests, one to find some missing orphans, the other a mysterious "courtesan killer". From the other garbage I pick up my handy sword cane, and some gears and cogs I'll be able to sell later, immediately reminding me of all those bottles I recycled in Martinaise. One exit from this street is blocked by an electrified fence, beyond which is the Werewolf Containment Zone. I can't remember the last time three words made my imagination feel so fizzy, but tragically the Werewolf Containment Zone is beyond the scope of this demo. Instead, we move on to the Red Lotus, an opium den where I'm a regular customer. Things can go a couple of different ways here, depending on whether I cast an illusion to make myself look a little more human, or stay bull-shaped and force a confrontation with the bigoted centaur behind the front bar. Attempting skill checks, like the one to cast an illusion, costs Nerve. That's a resource lost whether you pass or fail, based not on dice, but drawing tarot cards face down then choosing one to flip. Each of the four suits relates to one of your four abilities, and while the rules aren't clearly explained, I muddle through just fine. Picking dialogue responses and making decisions flagged with abilities gives you points in the bodily humor(opens in new tab) linked to each one. Animal Instinct is yellow bile for instance, while Self Discipline is phlegm. They're the equivalent of experience points, with every 10 letting you choose to either increase that ability by a point, increase one of the skills related to it by three points, or take a card from the major arcana that has some kind of special bonus. One major arcana card I earn highlights whichever facedown card I draw during a skill check has the lowest number, while another gives me back three Nerve points every time I flip a face card. It's a flavorful idea, as is the character sheet styled after a phrenology exam—though given my bull's head, it also looks kind of like a diagram for cuts of meat. Successfully hiding my horns makes the next interaction easy, but on a replay I try dealing with this bouncer the hard way. Confrontations are shown as comic strips, each panel a separate step, whether it's an attempt to bribe your way out of trouble or rapping someone on the chin with the pommel of your cane-sword. The black-and-white pictures are another flavorful touch, like old-timey newspaper illustrations or some of Kevin O'Neill's art for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. These blow-by-blow comics get in the way of the story less than another combat system full of range penalties and movement modifiers would. Sovereign Syndicate's demo covers a few more interactions inside the Red Lotus, then wraps up. It's clearly got a long way to go, with a suggested release window of "holiday 2024(opens in new tab)." Right now there's no way to move the camera, and the ending's pretty abrupt. It remains pretty high on my list of anticipated games, not out of any particular interest in steampunk—never a big fan of Arcanum, I'm afraid—but because I'd love to see more wordy, Disco-like CRPGs that emphasize story, and squeeze in characterful oddities like the Werewolf Containment Zone. You can try the demo for yourself on Steam(opens in new tab). link: https://www.pcgamer.com/sovereign-syndicate-is-shaping-up-to-be-steampunk-disco-elysium/

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer believes 16-year-olds are too young to change their legally recognised gender. The UK Labour leader voiced "concerns" about the Scottish government's reforms to the process, citing a potential impact on UK-wide equalities law. However, he stopped short of backing a challenge to the Holyrood legislation, something UK ministers are considering. The SNP's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said any move to block the bill passed by MSPs would be "an outrage". The Scottish government has said it will "vigorously" contest any challenge. Row looms on gender bill as ministers consider veto What are the plans for gender reforms in Scotland? Changing gender to be made easier in Scotland The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, passed by MSPs, removes the need for people to get a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria before starting the change process. It also drops the age limit to 16, and cuts the amount of time the process takes from two years to a matter of months. Scottish Labour supported the reforms, and almost all of its MSPs voted for the finalised bill. But Sir Keir told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: "I have concerns about the provision in Scotland, in particular the age reduction to 16 and, in particular, the rejection of our amendment in relation to the Equalities Act." Pressed on whether you are old enough at 16 to decide to change gender, he replied: "No, I don't think you are." Scottish Labour had tabled an unsuccessful amendment that sought to clarify the application of UK-wide equality laws. Supporters of the lower age limit previously argued that the age of legal capacity in Scotland was already 16 and that should be no different when it came to changing gender. Sir Keir also told the programme a respectful debate was needed on the issue and said he believed it was currently being treated as a "political football". Asked to clarify his position, the Labour leader replied: "Modernise the legislation to take out the indignities." The UK government is considering challenging the legislation, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak saying it is "entirely reasonable" for ministers to examine the potential legal impact of the bill on the rest of the UK. Sir Keir would not be drawn on whether he would back a challenge, saying he wanted to wait and see what UK ministers decided to do. The UK government is currently considering legal advice about whether to use its powers to block the bill from becoming law. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke during a visit to Scotland last week about the concerns he has over the changes it would enact. Downing Street officials said on Saturday that the full legal advice to ministers had not yet been reviewed and no decisions had been made. BBC Scotland understands a decision may be announced on Tuesday or Wednesday. UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper was also asked about the gender self-identification laws being changed in Scotland. He said ministers were awaiting "detailed analysis" of how Scotland's gender law would affect UK legislation. 'We need a detailed analysis' Mr Harper told the BBC: "We are not proposing to make those changes for England, but what we have to do is make a decision about whether that legislation impacts on legislation elsewhere in the UK. "One of those pieces of legislation is the Equalities Act. "That is why we need a detailed analysis of that, and that is the information the government needs before it can take a decision." Mr Harper added that transgender people had received abuse and their rights should be respected but women also had concerns about risks to their safety. The minister also described criticism of the author JK Rowling, who has condemned the legislation in Scotland, as unfair. Making it easier to legally change gender has been one of the most contentious issues to come before the Holyrood parliament. It has exposed sharp divisions within all the major political parties and prompted the biggest ever rebellion in the SNP since the party took power. Those divisions within parties are underlined by the stance Sir Keir Starmer has now taken against extending the right to switch gender to 16 and 17-year-olds. The official position of the Scottish Labour Party was to support that change, albeit that some of their MSPs refused to back the bill at the final stage. If, in the week ahead, the UK government decides to use its powers to block the Scottish bill, Labour will have another decision to make. Do they think such an intervention is justified or not? Sir Keir has not ruled out backing a UK veto even if his Scottish party helped pass the legislation. Presentational grey line Meanwhile, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn defended the reforms. He told BBC Scotland's The Sunday Show: "What we have is a right-wing UK Conservative government which is seeking to row back on the democratic powers of the Scottish Parliament. That's an outrage. "And the people who should be most outraged by that are the Conservative and Labour politicians who voted in favour of the GRR (Gender Recognition Reform) who must recognise the fact this is the UK parliament overstepping massively." The Scottish Greens criticised the Labour leader and said his comments were a "shameful intervention". Equalities spokeswoman Maggie Chapman said: "Starmer is ignoring the views of the vast majority of the Scottish Parliament, including the Labour MSPs who rightly backed the bill. "A lot of people in Scotland will never forgive him if he lines up with the Tories to block what is a small but important step for equality." Scottish actor Brian Cox, 76, also spoke in favour of the legislation but said he was unsure about 16-year-olds being allowed to change gender. I'm very, very proud of Scotland for doing the gender identification act, because I think that's long needed and it's a debate that has to happen," he told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. "And I do question the 16 thing, but that's my own personal feeling, but I do feel we need to address that and I think that's absolutely right." He also said he did not like the way JK Rowling was treated over the issue as she was "entitled to her opinion". link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-64281548

Images and footage of the black-naped pheasant-pigeon were recently captured by scientists. This is the first documented sighting of the elusive bird since 1882. For the first time in 140 years, researchers have scientifically documented a rare bird called the black-naped pheasant-pigeon (Otidiphaps insularis), a reclusive species native to the steep forested slopes of Papua New Guinea's Fergusson Island. For more than a century, the species was thought to be lost to science, possibly extinct. But in 2019, a survey team composed of Indigenous Papua New Guinean and U.S. researchers heard rumors from local people of a rare ground-dwelling bird called an "auwo" haunting the underbrush, and this year, they finally captured footage of the long-lost animal. "It wasn't until after we returned to the U.S. that we realized that the species hadn't been observed since 1882," Jordan Boersma(opens in new tab), a researcher at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and co-leader of the expedition, told Live Science. With the financial and organizational aid of the Papua New Guinea National Museum and the American Bird Conservancy, Boersma organized a second expedition to Fergusson Island to look for black-naped pheasant-pigeons. In September 2022, after multiple delays caused by COVID-19, the team finally made it back there. And this time, they found what they were looking for — eventually. RELATED: Fowl play? 'Bird of the Year' winner in New Zealand contest is a bat It took Boersma and his team nearly a month to track down someone who had seen the bird more recently than the mid-1990s. Finally, they spoke to Augustin Gregory, a local hunter, who pointed them in the right direction. "At that point the bird kind of felt like a mythical creature, because we'd been chasing it so long," Boersma said. The expedition members set up a series of camera traps on Mount Kilkerran, the island's tallest mountain. Two days before they were scheduled to leave, their patience paid off: One of the cameras captured photos and video footage of a real, live pheasant-pigeon. One reason that scientifically documented sightings of the black-naped pheasant-pigeon have been so rare historically is that the bird was only recently designated a separate species from its mainland relatives. Previously, it was considered a subspecies of the pheasant-pigeon (Otidiphaps nobilis), until the distinction became official in 2014. Another reason is that Papua New Guinea (and Fergusson Island, in particular) is remote, densely forested and quite mountainous. "It takes a long time to cover a little bit of ground," Boersma said. Unfortunately, the newly rediscovered bird is already under threat. The region where the researchers snapped their photos is slated to be logged within the next few weeks. But the researchers and Fergusson Island inhabitants alike are hopeful that by bringing attention to the black-naped pheasant-pigeon, they can help save the species — and its forest home. "We still know practically nothing about the species," Boersma said. "So it's important that we start to learn things about its ecology, which is why we're planning a return trip. For now, all we really know is that it still exists." link: https://www.livescience.com/rediscovered-papua-new-guinea-bird

You won't find this variant of Tesla's electric SUV on the configurator. At least not yet. Tesla's new entry-level Model Y is not currently on its site's configurator. The electric SUV, however, is in stock at a number of Tesla stores. With up to 279 miles of EPA-rated range, this Model Y variant costs $2000 less than a Model Y Long Range. Tesla's pulling a page from In-N-Out Burger's playbook and giving Model Y buyers the chance to order a cheaper variant off a proverbial secret menu. Though the automaker's website currently restricts Model Y orders to those of the $54,380 Long Range or $58,380 Performance variants, Tesla's list of online inventory shows that a number of its stores are stocked with salable base Model Y EVs that wear a starting price $2000 less than that of the Long Range model. (As of this writing, however, it seems most of these entry-level Ys in inventory include at least $2000 worth of optional 20-inch wheels and tires, thus effectively negating the base model's cost savings over its Long Range counterpart.) Unlike the prior entry-level rear-drive Model Y, which Tesla stopped producing in 2021, this new base-level Model Y comes standard with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. It also packs a greater EPA-rated range relative to its single-motor forebear. With up to 279 miles of driving range on a full charge, the cheapest Model Y variant betters the old Standard Range model's range by 35 miles. That said, it falls short of the Model Y Long Range and Performance's figures by up to 51 and 24 miles, respectively. Powering the electric motors of this latest addition to the Model Y line is Tesla's 4680 battery pack, which the company produces at its Texas plant. Though Tesla is mum on the pack's rated capacity and other details, given the lesser range of Model Y's equipped with this pack, it's safe to assume the useable capacity of these batteries falls short of the 75.0-kWh pack that powered a 2020 Model Y Long Range we previously tested, which was EPA-rated to travel up to 316 miles on a full charge. We managed just 220 miles of range while testing the Model Y on our 75-mph highway test. Whether the range deficit of the base 2023 Model Y relative to its Long Range kin is worth its $2000 price reduction is a matter of personal preference. That said, the extra stacks in a base Model Y buyers' pocket can go toward added options for their new EV or a lower monthly payment or paying off those gambling debts. Look, we're not here to judge. We're only here to let you know that Tesla offers its own version of an Animal Style burger for the Model Y. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42506902/2023-tesla-model-y-standard-range/

Your transition is unlikely to be the main cause of the estrangement. I would write to your children – to try and understand what happened from their point of view The dilemma I am a 72-year-old trans woman. Outwardly, publicly, I can say my life has been interesting and successful. I’ve had a good career. My last job was to run an NGO to safeguard the interests of girls and women in a part of the world where their interests are habitually overlooked. I now live back home and am happily married. I feel blessed. And yet I am haunted by a loss that I find difficult to comprehend. I have not seen my children for years. The reason for this estrangement is not, I think, specifically my transitioning, but the act of telling: the demand by the hospital that to advance in my progress towards surgery I must take this step to tell my children. Yet the hospital offered no guidance. I managed it badly with – for us all – terrible consequences. Prior to my telling my children, I was depressed. I had already stopped work on mental health grounds and my then wife also had mental health difficulties. I have never doubted the necessity of my course of action or the possible outcome if I had not transitioned – and each day since has proved it to have been right. I have the life I live now, with all that it gives me, but I had that other life that contained my children, who I loved intensely. I do not know how to approach the estrangement or mediate it, and it eats into me. I have been erased. Philippa’s answer You have made the right decisions for yourself and you have made your life work for you. You have made a significant contribution to society and you have a loving partner. I’m glad it’s not all bad. Since parental estrangement usually happens after an event – like the announcement of a divorce or, in your case, the announcement of your transition – parents tend to think it is that incident which caused the rupture, but such an incident is rarely the main cause. It is usually an accumulation of things. And neither is it the things that are the cause of the estrangement: it is how the children experience, interpret and perceive those things. There isn’t one particular type of communication or parental approach, or specific type of conflict that is consistent in parental estrangement cases. Often, the children and their parents believe it was caused by different reasons. Parents usually report that the cause must have been the divorce or that they weren’t strict or lax enough, but the adult children usually cite mistreatment, neglect or feeling unheard, unaccepted by, or unimportant to their parents. What I’m saying is that although your children might not like the way they were told about your transition (perhaps they would have preferred knowing your process as it happened or maybe they wanted you to be more interested in them – I don’t know), it is unlikely to be the main cause of their estrangement. It is more likely to be an accumulation of their interpretations of many events. It is hard not to blame the hospital – and, indeed, they may well be partly culpable – but blaming isn’t useful and keeps you in the position of victim, unable to do anything. If I were you, I would write to my children. I would talk of my sadness over the estrangement. I would say that I wanted to try to understand it from each of their points of view. I would ask for their help in understanding what their experience has been and how they interpreted that experience. If they reply, I would attempt to see all the events and feelings that led them to the conclusions they made. In return, I would sum up to them what they told me, without arguing about their version of events, to make certain that they know I have listened and not been defensive. Then, and only if they want to know, I would say what my experience has been, and what I wish for in the future. Whether they responded or not, I would assure them that they are always in my thoughts. Where there has been a rupture in a relationship it is never too late to attempt a repair. No action comes with any guarantee, but you can try. You can open the door. It could be that nothing happens. But it is more likely not to happen if you stay behind a closed door. If, after such an attempt, they are still uninterested in resuming a relationship with you, and you still don’t want to be forgotten, you could write your autobiography. You can leave this for them. Also think of some of your things that you can bequeath to each of them when you eventually die. You have been part of their lives and they yours and the more you can all understand about each other, the saner you may all feel – which is why, even if they can’t or won’t respond, it is important you try to leave them your history which may, in the long run, help them make sense of their own. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jan/15/ask-philippa-perry-i-have-lost-touch-with-my-children-since-i-transitioned

Russia launched fresh waves of missile attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least 20 people in a strike on an apartment block in the eastern city of Dnipro. A number of other cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa, were also hit. Much of Ukraine is now under an emergency blackout after missiles hit power infrastructure in several cities. Earlier, the UK said it would send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine to help the country's defence. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the Challengers, the British army's main battle tank, would help Kyiv's forces "push Russian troops back". Russia responded by saying that providing more weapons to Ukraine would lead to intensified Russian operations and more civilian casualties. Later on Saturday - a day when Ukrainians celebrate the Old (or Orthodox) New Year - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian attacks on civilian targets could be stopped only if Ukraine's Western partners supplied necessary weapons. "What is needed for this? Those weapons which are in the depots of our partners and which our soldiers are waiting for so much," he said in his nightly video address, adding that his forces shot down more than 20 out of 30 Russian missiles fired at Ukraine. The devastating strike in Dnipro hit the entrance of a nine-storey building, turning several floors into smouldering rubble, and leaving 73 injured, including 14 children, Ukrainian officials said, in what is likely to be the worst attack in months. A sizeable crowd gathered to watch the rescue effort at the site of the strike, while others joined rescue workers in a desperate search for survivors. There were urgent calls, human chains of volunteers clearing rubble and torch beams piercing thick clouds of dust and smoke. In his address, Mr Zelensky said debris clearance in Dnipro would continue all night: "We are fighting for every person, every life." So far, 38 people have been rescued from the building, including six children, officials say. There is no information yet on why the apartment block was the object of such devastation, as it is some distance from the nearest power facility. On a day when Russia seemed intent, once again, on targeting Ukraine's energy grid, this could have been one of the less accurate missiles in Russia's arsenal, or something brought down by Ukraine's air defences - although on the face of it, this seems a less likely explanation. It has been two weeks since the last wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid. Mr Zelensky said of the energy infrastructure facilities hit on Saturday that the most difficult situation was in the Kharkiv and Kyiv regions. Ukrainian state energy company Ukrenergo earlier said round-the-clock consumption limits had been set for all regions until midnight local time. Officials, in the West and in Ukraine, had begun to wonder if Russia's "energy war" might be coming to an end, due to a possible shortage of suitable missiles and the evident fact the strategy has yet to break Ukraine's spirit. Saturday's attacks suggest Moscow still thinks it is a tactic worth pursuing. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64278733

Audiences in Algeria were repeating offensive chants during the opening ceremony. Rabat - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said it will “investigate and look into the political statements and events at the opening ceremony of the TotalEnergies CHAN Algeria 2022” in a statement released on Sunday. The statement is likely in reference to chants made at the CHAN opening ceremony in Algeria, where audience members repeated: “Give them bananas! Moroccans are animals!” “These political statements are not the statements of CAF and do not reflect the views or opinions of CAF as a politically neutral organisation,” the CAF’s statement added. The confederation added that it will give an update “in due course,” and that it is under an obligation not to get involved in political matters. The chants came after Morocco, the defending champion, missed out on participating in the competition due to Algeria’s refusal to grant authorization to travel directly from Rabat to Constantine using its national carrier Royal Air Maroc. President of Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lekjaa had announced in December that if the team is not allowed to make the direct trip on a Royal Air Maroc flight, they would forfeit their participation. Algeria has prohibited any Moroccan planes from entering its airspace since it unilaterally cut ties with its neighbor in August 2021. On Friday, Morocco’s team was ready to board their flight from Rabat-Sale International airport, but could not make the trip in the end as authorization from Algeria was never received. Lekjaa described the decision to not allow the team to defend the title as a “shame,” while CAF President Patrice Motsepe also expressed disappointment at the absence of the Moroccan team. In addition to being the defending champions, Morocco also has the most titles in the competition, tied with DR Congo with two titles each. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/01/353546/caf-to-investigate-racist-chants-at-chan-opening-ceremony
