  12. What It Is: Volkswagen’s third-generation Touareg SUV, caught completely sans camouflage during an apparent open-air photo shoot ahead of its official debut. More than a decade after the Touareg first went on sale in the United States, we still feel the need to remind readers how to properly pronounce its name. Say “Tw-ARE-egg.” See? Not so hard. Why It Matters: This one is a little tougher. Volkswagen has told us it won’t bring the new Touareg to the U.S., where the model has been an unequivocal sales flop nearly the entire time it’s been on offer since 2003. (The model line is on hiatus for 2018.) Even while crossover sales in general have gone gangbusters, the attractive, right-sized, and luxurious Volkswagen languished on dealer lots. A rising tide lifts all boats, as the saying goes, but the otherwise appealing Touareg was sunk by its pricing. As it turns out, selling a VW SUV for Porsche or Audi money isn’t easy—particularly when Porsche and Audi sell re-bodied versions of that same SUV. The Cayenne and the Q7 both have shared underpinnings as well as some engines with the Touareg. In 2017, it actually cost more money to buy a new Touareg than a new Audi Q7. That’s flatly ridiculous. But the new Touareg theoretically could compete against the larger two-row crossover SUVs from mainstream automakers such as the Nissan Murano, the Ford Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, if only Volkswagen could figure out how to sell it here for about $15,000 less than the outgoing model. Platform: Selling this Touareg for much less than $50,000 might be extremely difficult, however. The new model, like its predecessors, shares its architecture with the Q7 and the Cayenne—this time the second-generation MLB platform. At least on visual assessment, the 2019 Touareg is every bit as attractive as its luxury-badged siblings. The styling overall is sharper and more expensive-looking than the previous model, and there is a surprising dose of Bentley Bentayga in the profile. Then again, that ultra-luxury SUV also rides on the MLB platform—as does the new Lamborghini Urus. Powertrain: Four- and six-cylinder power is expected, with Volkswagen’s ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four starting out the lineup and either a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6 or the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 from the Audi Q7 powering higher-spec models. There will be a hybrid of the plug-in variety, and it’s expected to combine a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, an electric motor embedded in the transmission, and a lithium-ion battery. While the U.S.-market Touareg hasn’t offered diesel power in a long time—and the rest of VW’s American lineup probably won’t ever offer it again thanks to the company’s emissions scandal—global markets will have the choice of four- or six-cylinder diesel engines. Estimated Arrival and Price: Never, and for too much money even if it did. In place of this two-row Touareg, the U.S. market is expected to receive a more affordably priced two-row version of the Atlas. Slotting between the compact Tiguan and the three-row Atlas, that new SUV will be built on the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, assembly line as the Atlas, and its pricing should start at around $30,000.
  13. Asian markets plunged on Tuesday as investors dumped stocks following heavy falls in the US. At one point Japan's Nikkei 225 index was down 7%, but recovered some of those losses to close 4.7% lower. Asian shares were reacting to heavy losses in the US, where the Dow lost 4.6% - the biggest loss in six years. The falls follow some good years for investors. In 2017 the Dow was up 25%, helped by a resurgent economy, strong profits and low interest rates. The sell-off began last week after a solid US jobs report fuelled expectations that the economy's strength was such the Federal Reserve would need to raise interest rates faster than expected. Jane Sydenham, investment director at the stockbrokers Rathbones, told the BBC the falls did not appear to herald a serious change of sentiment: "It is always a bit too early to tell, but I think these recent market falls are in the nature of a correction. "What we have to remember is stock markets have had a very smooth ride upwards and we've not had a fall of more than 3% for 15 months. There's been a real lack of volatility, which is very unusual." She added that bear markets tend to happen ahead of a recession and at the moment growth forecasts were being upgraded. Re-evaluation Erin Gibbs, portfolio manager for S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: "This isn't a collapse of the economy. "This is concern that the economy is actually doing much better than expected and so we need to re-evaluate." One country whose immediate economic outlook remains stagnant is Japan. The authorities there said there was little chance of interest rates being increased. The Bank of Japan's governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, ruled out the possibility of raising interest rates in the near future. He said it was "inappropriate" to do so with inflation still about half its 2% target. But markets in Asia typically follow the lead from the US. Elsewhere in the region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 4.5% and South Korea's Kospi index gave up 2.6%. Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 lost 3.2%. Live: Global stock markets slump Asia markets are following Wall Street's lead - but why? The 2018 economy: What to watch What happened in the US? On Monday the Dow Jones Industrial Average index tumbled 1,175 points, or 4.6% to close down at 24,345.75. The decline was the largest in percentage terms for the Dow since August 2011, when markets dropped in the aftermath of "Black Monday" - the day Standard & Poor's downgraded its credit rating of the US. The drop on the Dow was closely followed by the wider S&P 500 stock index, down 4.1% and the technology-heavy Nasdaq, which lost 3.7%. The White House moved to reassure investors saying it was focused on "long-term economic fundamentals, which remain exceptionally strong". What has driven the Dow's surge? US jobs and wages rise in January The US economy in six charts Will this have long term impact? Analysts say that in the short term, investors should be prepared for choppier stock markets. Joel Prakken, chief US economist for IHS Markit, predicts share price gains will be limited over the next two years. "The difference between this year and last year is we're going to see more periods of volatility like this as the market reacts to higher inflation," he said. "We're just not used to it because it's been so long since we've had a significant correction." However, he added that markets would need to deteriorate more significantly for him to start to worry about the broader economy. Asian markets, on the other hand, have benefitted from record low US interest rates in the last decade because money has flowed into Asia in search of stronger returns. Analysts say the expected rate rises could impact Asia over the longer term.

  16. Jeep hasn't sold a pickup truck since 1992, when the XJ Cherokee-based Comanche went out of production. Since then, Jeep has made many concept pickups to tease us. Now, we know that a JL Wrangler-based pickup is on its way, and it's high on our list of cars we can't wait to drive. To say we're excited for the Wrangler pickup would be an understatement, so let's round up everything we think we know about it. It's Actually, Finally, Really, Seriously Happening Jeep started the Wrangler pickup fever in 2005 with the Gladiator Concept (shown above), but it never reached production. A handful of concepts since only served to whet our collective appetite further. Finally, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed in early 2016 that Jeep would be offering a production pickup version of the JL Wrangler, the standard SUV-version of which made its debut in late 2017. It's Hitting Production in Late 2019 In a 2016 interview with The Detroit News at the Detroit Auto Show, Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that the Wrangler pickup would arrive in late 2017, following the debut of the JL Wrangler. Unfortunately, Jeep has since delayed pickup production until late 2019, nearly two years into JL production. Manley says that he wants to make sure there are no issues with the regular Wrangler before Jeep starts building the pickup. Both Wrangler models will be built at Jeep's Toledo, Ohio plant, which is undergoing a $700 million upgrade to prepare for the new vehicles. Automotive News reported that production of the previous-generation Wrangler, the JK, will end in April 2018, so the Toledo factory can be re-tooled for the pickup. As for when we'll see it in the flesh? We suspect it'll debut at an auto show later in 2018, possibly Los Angeles. It'll (Probably) Look Like This Ever since the Wrangler pickup was announced, we've been receiving spy photos and detailed renderings giving us a pretty clear picture of what to expect. Unsurprisingly, it looks like a Wrangler with a truck bed. The next-generation Wrangler sports a trimmer profile with a vertical, kinked grille and integrated turn signals/DRLs in the front fenders. We’ve only seen spy shots of four-door Wrangler Unlimited pickup prototypes, but according to the latest renderings, the truck will likely be available as a two-door as well. It's Been Rumored for Production for a While Now We first heard rumblings of a JL Wrangler-based pickup in September of 2015. Of course, people have been clamoring for it for a much longer time. It'll Be Based on the New Wrangler Platform The new Wrangler SUV debuted in late 2017 as a 2018 model, and it represents a massive improvement over its predecessor. That's good news for the pickup. We've covered all of the details of the JL Wrangler in our story about its reveal and our first drive of a Rubicon model, but here are some highlights: The JL's body is made from aluminum, which helps save up to 200 lbs of weight over its predecessor, the JK. The interior is much nicer than before, with better materials, sharper design, and FCA's great UConnect infotainment system. It still comes standard with Chrysler's 3.6-liter 285-hp Pentastar V6, but a new six-speed manual and optional eight-speed automatic make the most of it. Optional is a 270-hp turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder; a diesel V6 is set to debut later. Despite all this new stuff, the Wrangler still has a ladder frame and solid axles, exactly what off-roaders want. It Probably Won't Have a Hellcat Engine. . . Yes, Jeep made a Wrangler with the 707-hp supercharged V8 from the Hellcat in 2016, but it's just a one-off fever dream. Don't fret—if you really want a Hellcat motor and a seven-slat grille, there's always the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. . . .But It'll Likely Have a Diesel According to screenshots of Jeep's dealer system on the Jeep Scrambler Forums, the JT Wrangler Pickup will offer an optional a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 with auto start/stop as an engine choice. It'll Sell Like Crazy Americans love pickup trucks, and Americans love Jeeps. Sergio Marchionne knows this, so building a Wrangler pickup is a complete and total no-brainer. It'll also be wildly different from every other pickup currently on sale, which should help it further. Marchionne said at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show that FCA expects to sell 100,000 examples of the pickup per year, and they'll be "expensive—intentionally so." The Roof Will Be Removable Along with shots confirming the diesel engine, the Scrambler Forums have evidenceshowing that the roof will be removable, just like a regular Wrangler. There will likely be up to three roof configurations available—manual-folding soft top, hard top with removable roof panels, and power-sliding soft top—just like the JL Wrangler. We Have a Name (Maybe) Generally, folks assumed this new vehicle would just be called the Wrangler Pickup. Now, the rumor is that FCA will revive a name that last appeared on a Jeep CJ-8: Scrambler. But we're not getting our hopes up for a new Jeep Scrambler just yet. Speaking at the Detroit Auto Show, Fiat Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne said that he "[doesn't] know the name of the pickup truck." We'll find out in due course.
  17. A bullish US President Donald Trump has proclaimed a "new American moment" as he delivers his maiden State of the Union speech on Tuesday night. In a primetime address to Congress, he told lawmakers: "There has never been a better time to start living the American dream." The Republican leader will say he is "extending an open hand" to Democrats to set aside bitter political division. The American economy is booming but Mr Trump's approval rating languishes. All the reaction to Trump's speech In an upbeat message a world away from the apocalyptic tone he struck in his "American carnage" inaugural address of just a year ago, Mr Trump said his administration is "building a safe, strong and proud America". As many as 40 million television viewers are expected to tune in as he implores the nation to come together as "one team, one people and one American family", according to excerpts released by the White House. On foreign policy, Mr Trump is noting that nearly all the territory in Syria and Iraq once controlled by the Islamic State group has been retaken. He will vow: "We will continue our fight until ISIS is defeated." What about the Democrats' response? Massachusetts congressman Joseph Kennedy III, a great-nephew of President John K Kennedy, will deliver the Democrats' rebuttal to Mr Trump's speech. He will attempt to seize Mr Trump's political mantle by purporting to speak for "Americans who feel forgotten and forsaken". Bewailing a "fractured country" and depicting Mr Trump's presidency as "chaos", Mr Kennedy, 37, will say: "Many have spent the past year anxious, angry, afraid." "Bullies may land a punch," he will say. "They might leave a mark. "But they have never, not once, in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a people united in defence of their future." A new Kennedy in the political spotlight In one telling moment, members of the Democratic Congressional Black Caucus sat in stony-faced silence amid a standing ovation in the House of Representatives as Mr Trump noted that African-American unemployment is the lowest ever recorded. About a dozen Democratic lawmakers were expected to snub Mr Trump's speech in what could be one of the biggest boycotts of a president's State of the Union. One of them, California congresswoman Maxine Waters, told MSNBC: "Why would I take my time to go and sit and listen to a liar?" Healer-in-chief? For the second time in his presidency, Donald Trump steps into the US Capitol to address a joint session of Congress and the American people. Last year he gave a speech that was well-received. Learned pundits nodded approvingly as the new president spoke of putting "trivial fights behind us". Perhaps his "American carnage" inaugural Address was a rhetorical hiccup left over from the heated 2016 campaign. The past 12 months, however, have shown that fights - trivial and otherwise - were not abandoned. Just days after his speech to Congress, the president tweeted about being "tapped" in Trump Tower by Barack Obama. Mr Trump's presidency has been punctuated by feuds and political conflagrations. Many of the goals he set out last February were left unfinished. Now Mr Trump has another turn at bat. He may attempt to breathe new life into immigration reform, infrastructure investment or trade-deal renegotiation. He may focus on international hotspots like North Korea and the Middle East. He will certainly make calls for unity and try to lay claim to a year's worth of economic growth. The test won't be what he says on Tuesday, however, but what he does in the days ahead. What else is Trump saying? Mr Trump will make a plea for the kind of bipartisan co-operation that has been in short supply during a turbulent first year in office. The president, who has enraged Democrats by withdrawing protections for immigrants who entered the US illegally as children, will offer an olive branch. "Struggling communities, especially immigrant communities, will also be helped by immigration policies that focus on the best interests of American workers and American families," he will say. "So tonight I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to protect our citizens, of every background, colour and creed." What is the State of the Union speech? Mr Trump will also again tout his pet $1.7tn (£1.2tn) plan to rebuild America's aging roads and other infrastructure, though he is not expected to offer many details. Since he came to office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up by around 33% and the unemployment rate is at a 17-year low as the US continues its recovery from the Great Recession of a decade ago. But the president has often complained that he does not get enough credit for the rosy outlook. Mr Trump had an average job approval last year of 38%, the lowest first-year rating for any president in the history of Gallup polling. What about the guests? Like previous US presidents, Mr Trump has invited everyday people handpicked to put a human face on his administration's policies. The invitees, who will sit with First Lady Melania Trump, include an Ohio manufacturing worker said to have benefited from the president's tax plan. Also invited are the parents of two children from Long Island, New York, who were killed by MS-13, a gang with Central American origins. In attendance, too, will be a corporal who became the first blind, double amputee to re-enlist in the US Marines. Several Democratic lawmakers have invited guests who are personally affected by the immigration debate and the #MeToo movement. Who's the designated survivor? In the unlikely event that an attack on a heavily secured Congress takes out the president, vice-president and lawmakers in the line of succession, it is traditional for one US cabinet official to sit out the State of the Union in a secret location. That designated survivor, as he or she is known, will this year be Sonny Perdue, the current secretary of agriculture.
  18. Nissan revealed the second generation of its all-electric Leaf hatchback earlier this month, with an output of 147 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as an estimated range of 150 miles. That's all well and good, but what's suddenly got us interested is an upcoming, high-performance Nismo version. Yesterday at an event in Europe, Nissan confirmed it will be bringing a Leaf Nismo concept to the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. According to Autocar, this car is meant to preview the final design that will be put into production. Today, Nissan released official info and pictures of the car, giving us an idea of what we'll be seeing come October 25th. Compared to the normal Leaf, the Nismo concept features a more aggressive red-accented front bumper, red-accented side-skirts, a partially blacked-out hood, a black roof, a rear center fog light, and different wheels. According to Nissan, all of these visual upgrades improve aerodynamic performance without increasing drag. The inside is mostly unchanged from the regular Leaf, save for a few red trim pieces. Nissan also says the car has a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance tires, and a custom-tuned computer that delivers "instant acceleration at all speeds." What that means for battery power or capacity, we'll have to wait until later this month in Tokyo to find out.
  19. Update: The Samsung Galaxy S9 launch date has been revealed, while the latest leaks include a video seemingly showing the phone, plus rumors pointing to the size of the battery and the makeup of its outside material. The Samsung Galaxy S9 launch will be one of the biggest of the year in the phone space, with the eyes of the world firmly placed on the South Korean firm as it introduces its retort to Apple's iPhone X, which arrived towards the end of 2017. The good news is that the Galaxy S9 release date is edging ever closer, as we have now been invited to Samsung's official launch event at MWC 2018 on February 25. There's no question that this is when we'll see the refined sequel to last year'sSamsung Galaxy S8, with the invite clearly teasing the number nine, and we already have a good idea of what this Android smartphone looks like. The thing is, the S9 isn't looking like a phone to redefine the space. All the rumors, leaks and speculation to date point towards an iterative update. For those hoping for a game-changing device in the Galaxy portfolio, you may have to wait until 2019. It won't just be the S9 though, with rumors heavily hinting at the largerSamsung Galaxy S9 Plus set to arrive alongside - following the trend of launching dual flagships phones that the firm started back in 2015 with theGalaxy S6. What's the new Samsung Galaxy S9 news? Ahead of the newly revealed Galaxy S9 launch date on February 25, a leaked video has seemingly shown the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the flesh. What will the Samsung Galaxy S9 price be? We're expecting £639 / $725 / AU$1200 based on current projections, as the Galaxy S9 is likely to come in around the same price as its predecessor. Given we're not expecting massive design changes, we doubt too high a price rise. What's the Samsung Galaxy S9 release date? The Samsung Galaxy S9 launch date is February 25, according to Samsung's Unpacked 2018 invite. It's unclear when it'll arrive to its first customers, but pre-orders are likely to start on March 1 and the phone may ship in mid-March. Samsung Galaxy S9 release date Hottest leaks: Galaxy S9 launch date: confirmed for February 25 Galaxy S9 pre-order date: rumored for March 1 Galaxy S9 release date: rumored for mid-March The Samsung Galaxy S9 launch date is locked down for Sunday, February 25 in Barcelona. We know that, because Samsung has sent us an invite to its Unpacked event on that date, teasing the number nine in the process. This makes the Galaxy S9 launch earlier than 2017's S8 announcement, which happened after MWC, in March. he pre-order date is rumored to be March 1, while the Samsung Galaxy S9 release date is tipped to be mid-March according to our sources close to the S9. TechRadar's take: The Galaxy S9 launch date is now locked in, and while the pre-order and release dates aren't confirmed, the rumored timings make sense, but are certainly subject to change. Samsung Galaxy S9 price What we can safely predict is that the Samsung Galaxy S9 price is sure to be steep, as the Galaxy S8 launched at $720, £689, AU$1,199. The Galaxy S9 price will, at the very least, mirror that launch price of the S8, but there's always a chance it could cost even more. TechRadar's take: We expect the Galaxy S9 to inherit the same launch price as its predecessor as it's set to be a more iterative update, rather than a whole new reboot of the series. Samsung Galaxy S9 screen Hottest leaks: An in-screen scanner A water-repellent coating A 5.8-inch QHD+ screen The Bell reports unnamed industry sources saying that Samsung has been hard at work on the display panels for the Galaxy S9 since late March 2017. If true, that’s apparently about six months earlier than usual. As for the form the screen will take, it's rumored (and likely) to retain the Galaxy S8's 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Samsung Galaxy S9 design Hottest leaks: Smaller bezels A repositioned fingerprint scanner Most recently we've seen a short video, seemingly showing the Samsung Galaxy S9 from the front and back, albeit with the screen off. It matches up with an earlier render video and rendered images supposedly showing the Samsung Galaxy S9, which show a device that looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8, albeit with the fingerprint scanner moved beneath the camera lens (but not in-screen as some rumors have suggested). The front and back both look to use curved glass, the bezels are small and there's both a 3.5mm headphone port and what's presumably a Bixby button. We've also seen another leak that suggests the phone will keep its 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike the iPhone range. While you can't tell from these images, the bezels might actually be smaller than on the Galaxy S8, as a source claims the S9 will have around a 90% screen-to-body ratio, up from roughly 84% on the Galaxy S8. In fact, a leaked image complete with dimensions backs that up, as it suggests that the Galaxy S9 will be marginally shorter than the S8, but will otherwise look similar, albeit with the scanner moved beneath the camera lens, just like in the images above. One eagle-eyed TechRadar reader noticed the image below on Samsung's own website that seems to show the rear of the Galaxy S9 without a fingerprint scanner next to the camera. We've taken a look at the website and considering there are so many conceptual images of future Samsung phones on the page detailing the Exynos 9810, we don't believe this is an accurate depiction of the Galaxy S9. Elsewhere, Samsung has trademarked a new material called 'Metal 12' which is light and strong, so there's a chance this could be used in the S9, but it probably needs more development, so we doubt it. We've also heard that the Galaxy S9 could have a modular design, with magnets on the back letting you attach hardware accessories (which could take the form of battery packs, zoom lenses or any number of other things), a bit like Motorola's Moto Mods. Advertisement Only one source has mentioned this possibility so far, so we'd take it with a huge pinch of salt, but it could be a key selling point of the S9 if true. And a minor design tweak could come in the form of a new color for the Galaxy S9, with the phone supposedly landing in purple. Recently, we've seen yet another leak of renders claiming to show the phone, which seem believable given what we've heard this far. TechRadar's take: We'd expect a similar design to the S8, but likely with smaller bezels and a repositioned fingerprint scanner. A modular design is very unlikely. Samsung Galaxy S9 camera Hottest leaks: Samsung: "The Camera. Reimagined" A single-lens camera with variable aperture Super slow motion video Mobile HDR video recording The Galaxy S9 camera is going to be a key feature of Samsung's phone this year, and not because of a dual-lens camera or higher megapixels. Instead, we're expecting to see a variable aperture, super slow motion video and the possibility of the world's first phone with HDR video capture. The MWC 2018 launch event invite heavily teases the Samsung Galaxy S9 camera by including the words "The Camera. Reimagined." This could mean that the Galaxy S9 camera may beat the top-of-the-line Google Pixel 2 camera if it includes a variable aperture or becomes adds the world's first camera that can capture Mobile HDR video. Samsung Galaxy S9 camera rumors point to a 12MP Dual Pixel lens with optical image stabilization and a variable f/1.5-2.4 aperture. That means it would be able to switch between f/1.5 (great for low light shots) and f/2.4 (ideal when the lighting is better and you want more of the photo to be in focus). This rumor comes from a leaked image of the Galaxy S9's box, which also lists it as being 'super speed', having an 8MP front-facing camera and supporting 'super slow-mo'.
  20. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's deputy director, whom US President Donald Trump repeatedly accused of political bias, has resigned. Andrew McCabe was forced to step down ahead of his official retirement date in March, reports CBS News. His exit from the top law enforcement agency comes a week after a report that Mr Trump wanted him out. It was also reported last week that the president had asked Mr McCabe during an Oval Office meeting whom he voted for. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Monday's daily press briefing: "This decision was not made by the White House." "The president wasn't part of this decision making process," she added. All you need to know about Trump Russia story Could Trump be guilty of obstruction of justice? Why attacks on Mueller are mounting Why is this significant? Mr McCabe briefly became acting FBI director last May after Mr Trump fired its previous chief, James Comey. Mr Comey had been overseeing the bureau's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mr Trump eventually nominated Christopher Wray as the new FBI director, and he was confirmed by the Senate in August. Mr Wray recently threatened to resign after being pressured by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire Mr McCabe, Washington DC news outlet Axios reported last week. Mr McCabe, 49, who was already expected to step down in early 2018 upon becoming eligible for his pension, is now on leave ahead of his official retirement date, CBS News reports. Purge? Andrew McCabe had become a lightning rod for Republican criticism of the FBI's handling of the investigation into possible Trump campaign ties to Russia. Now he's heading for - or, perhaps, being pushed toward - the exits a bit earlier than he planned. Donald Trump had already been explicit in his criticism of the bureau's second-in-command during the tumultuous 2016 presidential election season. In a late December tweet, the president essentially counted the days until Mr McCabe's planned springtime retirement. FBI Director Christopher Wray reportedly threatened to resign rather than sack his deputy director. Something changed. Perhaps the political pressure from Republicans became too much. Or maybe, as Democrats have warned, this is the beginning of a political-tinged purge of the nation's top law-enforcement agency. If there's something more concerning about Mr McCabe's tenure, beyond a Democratic-affiliated wife or his name surfacing in text messages in 2016 between two FBI employees who had been critical of Mr Trump, it's only a matter of time before it comes to light. What's clear at this point, however, is that the Russian investigation is increasingly becoming mired in partisan trench warfare - and it could directly affect how Robert Mueller's special investigation proceeds. Why did Trump criticise McCabe? The Republican president has previously criticised Mr McCabe because his wife, Dr Jill McCabe, ran as a Democrat in a failed bid for Virginia's state senate. Her campaign received nearly $500,000 (£355,000) in donations from a political funding committee aligned with Hillary Clinton, Mr Trump's 2016 election rival. Mr Trump has railed against Mr McCabe and his wife on Twitter, calling the FBI chief a "Comey friend". CLICK Last July he tweeted: "Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!" The Washington Post reported last week that Mr McCabe was disturbed by a question he was asked by the president during a get-to-know-you Oval Office meeting. Mr Trump had reportedly asked Mr McCabe who he voted for in the 2016 US presidential election, according to current and former officials in the report. Mr McCabe said he told the president that he did not vote. The president has questioned how Mr McCabe could have handled the FBI investigation into Mrs Clinton's use of a private email server when his wife received donations from "Clinton Puppets". Did McCabe have a conflict of interest? Recently released text messages indicate FBI officials felt Mr McCabe should have recused himself earlier from the Clinton email investigation owing to his wife's political aspirations. In a 28 October 2016 exchange, FBI agent Peter Strzok wrote to colleague Lisa Page that the bureau's chief of staff "very clearly 100% believes that Andy should be recused because of the 'perception'". Mr McCabe eventually did recuse himself from the Clinton probe a week before the November 2016 election. Republican-led congressional committees have launched inquiries into whether the FBI botched its Clinton investigation and showed favouritism towards her. Democrats have said those investigations are attempts to distract from US Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Mr Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia. 21. Public Speaking The ability to speak clearly, persuasively, and forcefully in front of an audience – whether an audience of 1 or of thousands – is one of the most important skills anyone can develop. People who are effective speakers come across as more comfortable with themselves, more confident, and more attractive to be around. Being able to speak effectively means you can sell anything – products, of course, but also ideas, ideologies, worldviews. And yourself – which means more opportunities for career advancement, bigger clients, or business funding. Writing Writing well offers many of the same advantages that speaking well offers: good writers are better at selling products, ideas, and themselves than poor writers. Learning to write well involves not just mastery of grammar but the development of the ability to organize one’s thoughts into a coherent form and target it to an audience in the most effective way possible. Given the huge amount of text generated by almost every transaction – from court briefs and legislation running into the thousands of pages to those foot-long receipts you get when you buy gum these days – a person who is a master of the written word can expect doors to open in just about every field. Self-Management If success depends on effective action, effective action depends on the ability to focus your attention where it is needed most, when it is needed most. Strong organizational skills, effective productivity habits, and a strong sense of discipline are needed to keep yourself on track. Networking Networking is not only for finding jobs or clients. In an economy dominated by ideas and innovation, networking creates the channel through which ideas flow and in which new ideas are created. A large network, carefully cultivated, ties one into not just a body of people but a body of relationships, and those relationships are more than just the sum of their parts. The interactions those relationships make possible give rise to innovation and creativity – and provide the support to nurture new ideas until they can be realized. Critical Thinking We are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands, of times more information on a daily basis than our great-grandparents were. Being able to evaluate that information, sort the potentially valuable from the trivial, analyze its relevance and meaning, and relate it to other information is crucial – and woefully under-taught. Good critical thinking skills immediately distinguish you from the mass of people these days. Decision-Making The bridge that leads from analysis to action is effective decision-making – knowing what to do based on the information available. While not being critical can be dangerous, so too can over-analyzing, or waiting for more information before making a decision. Being able to take in the scene and respond quickly and effectively is what separates the doers from the wannabes. Math You don’t have to be able to integrate polynomials to be successful. However, the ability to quickly work with figures in your head, to make rough but fairly accurate estimates, and to understand things like compound interest and basic statistics gives you a big lead on most people. All of these skills will help you to analyze data more effectively – and more quickly – and to make better decisions based on it. Research Nobody can be expected to know everything, or even a tiny fraction of everything. Even within your field, chances are there’s far more that you don’t know than you do know. You don’t have to know everything – but you should be able to quickly and painlessly find out what you need to know. That means learning to use the Internet effectively, learning to use a library, learning to read productively, and learning how to leverage your network of contacts – and what kinds of research are going to work best in any given situation. Relaxation Stress will not only kill you, it leads to poor decision-making, poor thinking, and poor socialization. So be failing to relax, you knock out at least three of the skills in this list – and really more. Plus, working yourself to death in order to keep up, and not having any time to enjoy the fruits of your work, isn’t really “success”. It’s obsession. Being able to face even the most pressing crises with your wits about you and in the most productive way is possibly the most important thing on this list. Basic Accounting It is a simple fact in our society that money is necessary. Even the simple pleasures in life, like hugging your child, ultimately need money – or you’re not going to survive to hug for very long. Knowing how to track and record your expenses and income is important just to survive, let alone to thrive. But more than that, the principles of accounting apply more widely to things like tracking the time you spend on a project or determining whether the value of an action outweighs the costs in money, time, and effort. It’s a shame that basic accounting isn’t a required part of the core K-12 curriculum. What Else? Surely there are more important skills I’m not thinking of (which is probably why I’m not telling Bill Gates what to do!) – what are they? What have I missed? What lessons have you learned that were key to your successes – and what have you ignored to your peril?
  22. What It Is: A red Ferrari that’s more interesting than the typical scarlet horse seen cruising Bel Air, London, or some other such place. That’s because it is a prototype previewing the 488GTB’s rarer, higher-performance sibling. Ferrari built a similarly upgraded version of the 488GTB’s predecessor, the 458 Italia, but rather than that maxi model’s Speciale name, this new one is likely to opt for the historic GTO label. Why It Matters: Ferrari remains synonymous with the word supercar, but the famously insecure company can’t stand to be upstaged no matter the invincibility of its brand image. Today’s 488GTB outperforms not only the old 458 Italia but even the 458 Speciale. It seems that’s no longer good enough for Ferrari, particularly in the face of fresher competitors such as McLaren’s 720S and Lamborghini’s Huracán Performante. While Ferrari clearly believes it needs an answer to these upstarts, we couldn’t care less about its motivations because the resulting 488GTO surely will be an epic thing to drive. Ain’t competition grand? Platform: The 488GTO will share its spaceframe and mid-engine layout with its GTB sibling. Despite the camouflage on the prototype shown here, it’s apparent that Ferrari will revise the openings in the 488’s pretty bodywork to direct more air into the engine bay and at the brakes. Not visible here are the lightened body, stiffened suspension, enhanced brakes, and retuned chassis electronics we expect the GTO to adopt in an effort to extract even more speed from the 488. On the vanity end of things, expect the production car to wear special wheels and aerodynamic add-ons such as front and rear spoilers. Powertrain: Only in Ferrari’s rarified world could 661 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque, extracted from a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8, be deemed insufficient or, at least, numbers to be improved upon. The 488GTO will pile additional ponies and lb-ft onto the standard 488GTB’s totals—and likely far more than the 35 horsepower (and zero extra torque) in the 458’s conversion to the Speciale. Thank the 488’s turbochargers for the ease in that upgrade—although Ferrari is expected to carefully manage the GTO’s extra output to maintain the engine’s excellent tractability and near-nonexistent turbo lag. Cross your fingers that the GTO’s exhaust will be tuned to A) be louder than the GTB’s and B) uncork more of the V-8’s mechanical noise that’s muffled in that model. Estimated Arrival and Price: Such is the company’s aura that Ferrari could probably charge the select group of customers who’ll be able to get their hands on this GTO whatever it would like for the privilege. We believe Ferrari could rake in about $300,000 per GTO, a significant jump over the 488GTB’s $256,550 list price. The car won’t be available until sometime next year, and even then, it will go only to the lucky few already on a list that has already been completed.
  23. Heavy gunfire and explosions have been heard at a military academy in the Afghan capital, Kabul. The Marshal Fahim National Defense University came under attack early Monday morning, reports said. It comes days after the deadliest bombing for months hit Kabul when an ambulance packed with explosives killed at least 100 people. Islamic State and the Taliban have recently carried out attacks in the city. Several explosions were heard, as well as small arms fire, as the attack began at about 05:00 local time (00:30 GMT), the BBC's Mahfouz Zubaide reported from Kabul. Security forces have blocked off all roads in the area, Afghan media outlet Tolo said. According to Tolo, the president's spokesperson has confirmed the attack, saying that none of the attackers had been able to get further than the first gate. News agency AFP cited a police spokesman confirming rocket and gunfire but saying it was now calm. According to Reuters, police said there had been an incident inside at a military site but said it was not clear if it was an attack by militants. Reports say some of the gunmen have been killed in the attack. Can Afghan military turn the tide in Taliban fight? (CLICK) Four days behind the Taliban front line (CLICK) Who are the Taliban? (CLICK) The ambulance attack on Saturday, took place just one week after another attack on a Kabul hotel killed 22 people - mostly foreigners. The Taliban said it had carried out both attacks. Afghan military institutions are frequently targeted by militants. In October 2017, 15 military cadets were killed in an explosion outside the Marshal Fahim military academy, which is located west of the Kabul city centre.
