Humans instinctively adopt the gait that requires the least amount of energy given the walking conditions. Without realizing it, we are constantly tweaking our pace, stride length and foot lift. But could we consciously play with these parameters in order to influence our energy expenditure? Researchers at EPFL's Biorobotics Laboratory studied eight gait parameters in order to come up with a very sophisticated software program that uses an avatar to predict how much energy people use when they walk depending on their walking style. This research has been published in Scientific Reports. Salman Faraji, the co-lead author, devoted an entire section of his thesis to this topic. The avatar -- a torso equipped with two legs with feet -- can be freely configured. Users start by entering their height and weight and can then set the walking speed, distance between their feet (stride length and stride width), and foot lift, along with the incline of both the torso and the ground. They can also add mass and simulate the effect of being pushed or pulled at different parts of the body. The number of calories burned and the energy consumption are displayed in real time whenever the parameters are modified. Making custom exoskeletons This pioneering software drew on a number of experiments appearing in recent literature, and it offers a huge number of potential applications -- especially in the medical realm. "The software could be used to select the best design for an exoskeleton or a custom prosthetic, in order to reduce the user's effort. With a wearable exoskeleton, for example, we could optimize the location of the battery and actuators, or determine the ideal walking pattern for the user's preferred speed," says Amy Wu, the study's other co-lead author. The software could even determine where a backpack should be worn in order to minimize energy expenditure. "If, on the other hand, your goal is to burn calories, the software could be used to find a series of movements with a high metabolic cost." Designed for humanoid robots The software was created in a robotics lab and was initially intended to study the mechanics of human gait for use in humanoid robots. "The way humans walk is extremely complex. The level of control required is a huge challenge for humanoid robots, which often don't get it quite right," says Faraji. "We have a long way to go before we really understand all the parameters that go into human, animal and robot locomotion."

Concept cars sometimes predict the future in a distorted way. By definition, a concept car explores the paths auto-makers can take as they forge their next design identity. Some are created merely to turn heads on the auto show circuit while others preview what’s next. Key styling cues and dramatic lines often get watered down or completely lost, however. Join us as we look at how striking design studies changed as they navigated towards mass production.

Frank Lampard can be proud with the way Derby performed at Chelsea despite being beaten 3-2 in their Carabao Cup tie, according to Jamie Redknapp. Derby put in an excellent display at Stamford Bridge, twice battling back from a goal behind in the first half before Cesc Fabregas grabbed what turned out to be the winner just before half-time. Fikayo Tomori and then Richard Keogh both put through their own net, but Derby twice bounced back with goals from Jack Marriott and Martyn Waghorn, and they even had good chances late on to take the game to penalties.

Researchers say that the world has seriously underestimated the amount of heat soaked up by our oceans over the past 25 years. Their study suggests that the seas have absorbed 60% more than previously thought. They say it means the Earth is more sensitive to fossil fuel emissions than estimated. This could make it much more difficult to to keep global warming within safe levels this century. What is climate change? Final call to halt 'climate catastrophe' Risk of 'Hothouse Earth' despite CO2 cuts What have the researchers found? According to the last major assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world's oceans have taken up over 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases. But this new study says that every year, for the past 25 years, we have put about 150 times the amount of energy used to generate electricity globally into the seas - 60% more than previous estimates. That's a big problem. Scientists base their predictions about how much the Earth is warming by adding up all the excess heat that is produced by the known amount of greenhouse gases that have been emitted by human activities. This new calculation shows that far more heat than we thought has been going into oceans. But it also means that far more heat than we thought has been generated by the warming gases we have emitted. Therefore more heat from the same amount of gas means the Earth is more sensitive to CO2. What are the implications of the finding? The researchers involved in the study believe the new finding will make it much harder to keep within the temperature rise targets set by governments in the Paris agreement. Recently the IPCC spelled out clearly the benefits to the world of keeping below the lower goal of 1.5C relative to pre-industrial levels. This new study says that will be very difficult indeed. "It is a big concern," said lead author Dr Laure Resplandy from Princeton University in New Jersey. "If you look at the IPCC 1.5C, there are big challenges ahead to keep those targets, and our study suggests it's even harder because we close the window for those lower pathways." The report suggests that to prevent temperatures rising above 2C, carbon emissions from human activities must be reduced by 25% more than previously estimated. What does it mean for the oceans? As well as potentially making it more difficult to keep warming below 1.5 or even 2C this century, all that extra heat going into the oceans will prompt some significant changes in the waters. "A warmer ocean will hold less oxygen, and that has implications for marine ecosystems," said Dr Resplandy. "There is also sea level, if you warm the ocean more you will have more thermal expansion and therefore more sea level rise." What have these scientists done differently? Since 2007, scientists have been able to rely on a system of almost 4,000 Argo floats that record temperature and salinity in the oceans around the world. But prior to this, the methods used to measure the heat in the ocean had many flaws and uncertainties. Now, researchers have developed what they say is a highly precise method of detecting the temperature of the ocean by measuring the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. This allows them to accurately measure ocean temperatures globally, dating back to 1991, when accurate data from a global network of stations became available. The key element is the fact that as waters get warmer they release more carbon dioxide and oxygen into the air. "When the ocean warms, the amount of these gases that the ocean is able to hold goes down," said Dr Resplandy. "So what we measured was the amount lost by the oceans, and then we can calculate how much warming we need to explain that change in gases." Will the heat ever come back out? Yes, say the authors, but over a very long time. "The heat stored in the ocean will eventually come back out if we start cooling the atmosphere by reducing the greenhouse effect," said Dr Resplandy. "The fact that the ocean holds so much heat that can be transferred back to the atmosphere makes it harder for us to keep the Earth surface temperature below a certain target in the future.

Not every six-year-old game can feel fresh and modern on a new platform, especially after you take off the 'Ohmigosh it’s on Switch so I can take it anywhere!' goggles. This is my third trip through Diablo 3 since its original release on PC in 2012 and expansion pack-fueled debut on Xbox One in 2014, and I have to say: it still plays wonderfully. That’s not a huge surprise. What is an unexpected delight is how good Diablo 3 looks on Nintendo’s portable console. The Diablo 3 Eternal Collection doesn’t really offer anything new apart from a Ganondorf armor set, but it does offer everything: the Reaper of Souls expansion that makes you forget about the weak fourth Act, a seventh playable character in the form of the sadistic Necromancer, and every single update and tweak that’s helped Diablo 3 realize its full, enormous potential. It is Diablo 3 in its final form, and it’s simply a blast. Often literally, thanks to the explosive deaths that monsters suffer at your mighty hands. And it looks better than I expected it to, with image quality that suits the Switch’s built-in 720p screen perfectly. When you’re on a 65-inch 4K TV (running in Diablo’s maximum 960p resolution), only the character detail suffers a bit. The environments still look great! Connecting to other players for multiplayer – both in the same room with local play and online – was a breeze. And though we tried like hell to bring Diablo 3’s 60fps framerate to its knees on the Switch, it not only didn’t break, it didn’t even flinch. With four players setting off crazy special attacks amidst dozens of monsters onscreen, Diablo 3 on Switch stayed buttery smooth. Even the couple of networking hiccups we encountered couldn’t stop us. The action recovered a few seconds later and we got right back to having fun. Battery life in handheld mode, meanwhile, falls right in line with a typical big-budget Switch release, with roughly two-and-a-half to three hours of playtime. If you’ve never played Blizzard’s legendary loot-grinder, the Eternal Collection on Switch lives up to its name; you’ll find no shortage of content and characters to fill dozens of hours. And, by the way, you’re in for a treat. But even if you’re like me and the Switch is your third Diablo 3 platform, I still heartily endorse it because, quite simply, this is a complete and polished Diablo package that you can play anywhere from Heaven to Hell and everywhere in-between.

Nissan concept introduces turbocharging to 370Z, in addition to performance parts soon available to buy from Nismo This is the Nissan Project Clubsport 23: proof that the Japanese brand hasn’t forgotten about its old-school coupe as it closes in on its 10th birthday. • Take a look at the best cars from SEMA 2017 Set to make its public debut at the SEMA tuning show in Las Vegas from 30 October, the Clubsport 23 packs wide-ranging of tuning parts - many of which, Nissan says, will soon be offered to 370Z owners through its dealer network. The work is a collaboration between Nissan Motorsport and aftermarket parts suppliers like Sparco, Rays and Hankook. The donor 370Z Nismo gains tweaks to its suspension, braking and styling - all the sort of upgrades that existing owners could fit themselves. However, the most significant upgrade might be a step too far the regular home mechanic: the original 3.7-litre V6 has been ditched in favour of a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6. The VR30DDTT engine is borrowed from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60, and produces 400bhp - 50bhp up on the unit it replaces. A custom cold intake kit, blow off valves, and a custom exhaust system - the latter of which features twin 76mm pipes which exit in the rear bumper to either side of the number plate - help to accommodate the engine within the 370Z’s body. The cooling systems also received attention: a performance radiator, power steering cooler, intercooler and silicone hoses all replace the standard items. Like the standard car, power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6 speed manual gearbox. Matching the original ’box to the new engine wasn’t completely straightforward, because until now, the VR30 has only ever been offered with automatic transmissions. As a result, a unique clutch system, flywheel and casing had to be created. A variety of wheel, tyre and chassis upgrades keep the extra power in check. A three-piece Nismo body bracing kit stiffens the chassis, while KW adjustable coilovers and Eibach rear springs replace the standard parts. Lightweight 18-inch Rays wheels are wrapped in Hankook RS4 tyres, and house grooved brake discs with Nismo street and track pads and stainless steel brake lines. Nissan says that the wheels and brake pads will be available to buy in the Nismo catalogues shortly. Inside, the Project Clubsport 23 is fitted with Sparco QRT-R race seats, while six-point harnesses and steering wheel are also supplied by the Italian brand. The dash, door cards and centre armrest are trimmed in quilted upholstery with red stitching. Safety enhancements come in the form of a custom roll cage and fire extinguishers in both the cabin and engine bay. The standard Nismo body gains some choice upgrades on the outside, too. Up front, there’s a carbon bonnet held in place by pins, while the splitter is constructed from the same material. The air dam is new, while carbon also trims the door mirror covers and A-pillar trim. The changes are rounded off by the burnt orange colour - a vinyl wrap. The Project Clubsport 23 is one of four official Nissans on display from at SEMA. Two versions of the Titan pickup are designed to aid in disaster relief scenarios: the Ultimate Service Titan is equipped with a mobile command centre, first aid supplies and a bed, while the Paws One Titan is designed to help care for animals. The final concept is called the Kicks Sound Machine: a driving DJ booth featuring professional mixing equipment form Pioneer and speakers by Bose.

Manchester City made the right decision to play Tottenham on Wembley’s awful pitch on Monday instead of switching the Premier League tie to the Etihad, says Bernardo Silva. City's 1-0 victory, courtesy of Riyad Mahrez’s early goal, was played out on a pitch that had been used to host an NFL match just over 24 hours prior to Monday’s kick-off. The pitch was marked with a large NFL logo in the centre circle and there were larges patches of the surface that had been affected by Sunday’s clash between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles.

Hundreds of thousands of people have already discussed the last great taboo at one of Michael Hebb’s ‘death dinners’. Here he offers some advice for the rest of us two things preoccupy the US writer Michael Hebb – food and death – and he has managed to combine them in his new book, Let’s Talk About Death Over Dinner. It is the product of an idea he had five years ago when he set up an organisation called Death Over Dinner, whose goal was to bring disparate (and sometimes desperate) people together over an informal meal to talk about what is so often a taboo subject. Since then there have been more than 200,000 “death dinners” all over the world. The new book charts the gentle revolution Hebb initiated, as well as offering prompts for readers who want to organise their own death dinners and guidance on coming to terms with the loss of family and friends, and with our own mortality. No one, after all, is going to get out of this alive. “The way we die in western society is broken,” says Hebb. Now 42, he was 13 when his father died, leaving a gap that he felt his mother and immediate family were unable to properly address. “I had a hunch that open conversation about our end-of-life wishes could be the most impactful thing we could do to heal that system and to heal the way we die. We are death-illiterate, and when we don’t discuss death we are not empowered to make decisions.” In a long phone conversation from his home in Seattle, he spells out his philosophy for dealing with dying. You may not be able to conquer death, but you can at least exercise some control over how it happens. 1. Remember you will die Hebb says we have “ingrained cognitive bias” not to talk about death because we don’t really believe in our own mortality. “We believe we are an exception to basic rules,” he says. “If we haven’t experienced something, it’s hard to know it or to discuss it.” But there are no exceptions, and sooner or later you will have to confront it. 2. Talk now, not later “Death is a reality for all of us,” Hebb says. “How prepared do we want to be? How comfortable? How much grace do we want to have in the face of it?” He argues that it is better to talk about death when you are well than when you or your parents or other members of your family are terminally ill. “Thinking and talking about death can identify how you want to live,” he says. “If we haven’t made ourselves comfortable with this conversation, we end up being oppressed by it.” 3. It’s not true that you die alone Before talking to Hebb, I was doubtful that the living could relate meaningfully to the dying. My father died last year and, in the five months that were left to him after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I found it hard to find the right words to address what was happening to him or to know how to use what limited time we had together. Everyone, I surmised, had to face death alone, to make their own peace, but Hebb disagrees. “Dying is a realm with no experts, but my sense is that you can reduce the suffering of those who are dying by being as present as possible to them. A lot of people already start dying when they’re diagnosed, but you can live while dying. There is much to be gained from being present until the final chapter. It has the potential for deep connection. I’m not going to gleefully state that dying is a happy time, but I do know that people grieve longer when they don’t know how to honour the person who has died.” 4. Where there’s a will there’s a way “Statistics show we are very unprepared for death,” says Hebb. “Most people don’t have their end-of-life documents in order.” Sixty per cent of adults in the UK have not made a will; in the US, that figure is 57%. For Hebb, this isn’t just foolish at a practical level; it suggests an unwillingness to talk about death at all. “The documents are important, but more important are the nuanced conversations. If somebody is going to be your health proxy or advocate for you when you are unwell, you want them to have more than just a signed legal document. You want that person to have an entire forest of information about how you feel about end of life.” He says that if you give someone power of attorney to conduct your affairs in the event of you becoming incapacitated, you need to make sure that person really understands you. Spell out exactly what you want in terms of end-of-life care, perhaps through an advance care directive or a living will; do not assume your proxies will make the right calls. 5. Decide what sort of funeral you want Specifying what you want in terms of your funeral and disposal of your body can be important to the dying. But it may be even more important to the grieving family. “If it makes somebody’s last years more peaceful knowing that their wishes will be fulfilled, then fantastic, but communication is really a gift to the people you leave behind. It’s an important element of the moving through and getting on with their lives.” Making it clear that you do not want a gun carriage pulled by six white horses, or choosing a cardboard coffin rather than a fancy mahogany one with brass handles, can also save a fortune and keep relatives out of the clutches of funeral directors who may be tempted to oversell. How much is spent on a funeral is not a measure of the love felt for the departed.

US President Donald Trump has offered condolences at the Pennsylvania synagogue where 11 Jewish worshippers were shot dead at the weekend. He was joined by First Lady Melania Trump, his daughter and son-in-law at the Tree of Life temple in Pittsburgh. Hundreds of protesters gathered on the street chanting slogans against the president. The visit came as mourners attended the first funerals for victims of the massacre. Pittsburgh shooting: Who were the victims? Pittsburgh shooting 'will not break us' Anger at 'Jesus prayer' for Jewish victims The Trumps were greeted on Tuesday by Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, who led them inside the temple, where the worst anti-Semitic attack in US history unfolded on Saturday. At a memorial outside, Mrs Trump placed a flower and the president laid a small stone on a marker for each of the victims. Who accompanied the Trumps? Mr Trump was joined by his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is Jewish, and his daughter Ivanka, who converted to Judaism when she married Mr Kushner. Both are White House advisers. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is Jewish, also joined the president. Before his visit, the president condemned anti-Semitism. The alleged gunman was not a Trump supporter. Why are there protests? Critics accuse Mr Trump of fomenting a surge in white nationalist and neo-Nazi activity through divisive rhetoric which has seen him criticise immigrants and Muslims in particular. Some Jewish figures and Pittsburgh's Democratic Mayor Bill Peduto opposed the presidential visit. More than 70,000 people signed an open letter from Pittsburgh-based Jewish leaders saying that President Trump was "not welcome" in the city unless he "fully denounces white nationalism". The top four Republican and Democratic congressional leaders declined a White House invitation to join Mr Trump in Pennsylvania. The White House has rejected any blame over the attack. Members of Pittsburgh's Jewish community were among about 2,000 demonstrators who held a protest, according to Reuters news agency. As the president was driven through Pittsburgh, some bystanders made obscene gestures to his motorcade and thumbs-down gestures, reports AP news agency. And Mr Trump arrived at the synagogue, demonstrators chanted "President Hate, leave our state" and "Words have meaning". They held signs with such slogans as "We build bridges not walls"; "Trump, Renounce White Nationalism Now"; and "Trump's lies kill". During the presidential visit, one protester holding a baby was seen by reporters calling out: "We didn't invite you here." Whose funerals were held on Tuesday? Earlier on Tuesday, mourners paid their respects to four victims of the massacre. Brothers David and Cecil Rosenthal, who were aged 54 and 59, were among the first to be buried. They were the youngest victims of the shooting. During a packed prayer service for the siblings, Rabbi Myers said: "They could illustrate a dictionary definition for 'pure souls'." Daniel Stein, 71, and Jerry Rabinowitz, 66, were also laid to rest. Mr Rabinowitz was a doctor, known for his work with gay men diagnosed with HIV. On Saturday, he was shot and killed after he rushed to help the wounded, his nephew Avishai Ostrin said in an emotional Facebook post. Support for the community has been pouring in from across the country. A GoFundMe page created by an Iranian refugee studying in Washington DC, who has no connection to the Pittsburgh community, has already accumulated $900,000 (£700,000) to help rebuild the synagogue and support victims' families. Another fund set up by Muslim-American groups to help pay for funeral costs has raised $200,000. What of the suspected gunman? Robert Bowers, 46, is now in the custody of US marshals and faces 29 criminal charges. He was discharged from hospital on Monday after being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. During his first court appearance on Monday, Bowers waived his detention hearing and requested a public defender, US media reported.

The Walking Dead: Season One" redirects here. For the first season of the television series, see The Walking Dead (season 1). This article is about the Telltale game. For other video games based on the franchise, see The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct and The Walking Dead: Road to Survival. The Walking Dead (also known as The Walking Dead: The Game[5] and The Walking Dead: Season One[6]) is an episodic adventure game video game developed and published by Telltale Games. Based on The Walking Dead comic book series, the game consists of five episodes, released between April and November 2012. It is available for Android, iOS, Kindle Fire HDX, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game is the first of The Walking Dead video game series published by Telltale. The game takes place in the same fictional world as the comic, with events occurring shortly after the onset of the zombie apocalypse in Georgia. However, most of the characters are original to the game, which centers on university professor and convicted criminal Lee Everett, who helps to rescue and subsequently care for a young girl named Clementine. Kirkman provided oversight for the game's story to ensure it corresponded to the tone of the comic, but allowed Telltale to handle the bulk of the developmental work and story specifics. Some characters from the original comic book series also make in-game appearances. Unlike many graphic adventure games, The Walking Dead does not emphasize puzzle solving, but instead focuses on story and character development. The story is affected by both the dialogue choices of the player and their actions during quick time events, which can often lead to, for example, certain characters being killed, or an adverse change in the disposition of a certain character or characters towards Lee. The choices made by the player carry over from episode to episode. Choices were tracked by Telltale, and used to influence their writing in later episodes. The Walking Dead has been critically acclaimed, with reviewers praising the harsh emotional tone of the story and the empathetic connection established between Lee and Clementine. It won year-end accolades, including Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications. More than one million unique players have purchased at least one episode from the series, with over 8.5 million individual units sold by the end of 2012, and its success has been seen as constituting a revitalization of the weakened adventure game genre. In July 2013, Telltale released an additional downloadable episode, 400 Days, to extend the first season and bridge the gap towards Telltale's second season, released later that year. Season 3 and Season 4 of The Walking Dead was released in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Gameplay : The Walking Dead is a graphic adventure, played from a third-person perspective with a variety of cinematic camera angles, in which the player, as protagonist Lee Everett, works with a rag-tag group of survivors to stay alive in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.[7] The player can examine and interact with characters and items, and must make use of inventory items and the environment. Throughout the game, the player is presented with the ability to interact with their surroundings, and options to determine the nature of that interaction. For example, the player may be able to look at a character, talk to that character, or if they are carrying an item, offer it to the character or ask them about it. According to Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead game is focused more on developing characters and story, and less on the action tropes that tend to feature in other zombie-based games, such as Left 4 Dead. Some parts of the game require timed responses from the player, often leading to significant decisions that will impact the game's story, in the manner of role-playing games (RPGs).[9] Some conversation trees require the player to make a selection within a limited time, otherwise Lee will remain quiet, which can affect how other characters respond to him. Unlike in other RPGs such as the Mass Effect or Fallout series, where choices fall on either side of a "good or evil" scale, the choices within The Walking Dead have ambiguous results, having an effect on the attitude of the non-player characters towards Lee.[9] The player can opt to enable a "choice notification" feature, in which the game's interface indicates that a character has changed their disposition towards Lee as a result of these choices.[10] In more action-based sequences, the player must follow on-screen prompts for quick time events (QTEs) so as to keep themselves or other characters alive. If the player dies, the game restarts from just prior to the QTE. Other timed situations involve major decisions, such as choosing which of two characters to keep alive. Each episode contains five points where the player must make a significant decision, choosing from one of two available options. Through Telltale's servers, the game tracks how many players selected which option and lets the player compare their choices to the rest of the player base. The game can be completed regardless of what choices are made in these situations; the main events of the story, as described below, will continue regardless of what choices are made, but the presence and behavior of the non-player characters in later scenes will be affected by these choices. The game does allow the player to make multiple saves, and includes a "rewind" feature where the player can back up and alter a previous decision, thus facilitating the exploration of alternative choices.
