  2. The father of the suspect behind Sunday night's massacre in Las Vegas was on the FBI's 10 most-wanted fugitives list in 1968 after escaping from a Texas prison that same year. Benjamin Paddock had been sentenced to 20 years in the Federal Correction Facility in La Tuna, Texas, about 20 miles north of El Paso, after robbing Valley National Bank in Phoenix in 1960, according to a 1971 story in the now-shuttered Tuscon (Ariz.) Daily Citizen. His son, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, killed himself Monday as police broke into his room at the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino. Benjamin Paddock, born in Sheboygan, Wis., went by multiple aliases, such as Perry Archer, Benjamin J. Butler, and Leo Genstein, among others. He also called himself "Big Daddy," the article reports. ► Deaths mount: At least 59 dead, 527 injured in Las Vegas 'horror show' ► What we know: About what happened at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Benjamin Paddock had seemed to be starting his life over in Tucson before he was arrested for bank robbery. He served two prison terms in Illinois and operated garbage disposal and dishwasher business called Arizona Disposer Co. Stephen Paddock would have been around 6 or 7 years old when he lived in Tucson, though it's not clear for how long. The family lived in a neighborhood about 5 miles from central Tucson on the west end of Interstate 10. Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, father of the suspected Las Vegas shooter, was on the FBI's most wanted list in 1971 after he was convicted of armed robbery and subsequently escaped from prison. (Photo: FBI) While living in Tucson, Benjamin Paddock volunteered with the Pima County juvenile probation department, according to news stories. He was named a special deputy in 1959, assigned to handle cases of wayward youths, according to newspaper articles. But in 1960, Paddock was accused of robbing a bank in east Phoenix. Police were also attempting to tie the man to four other bank heists in the metro area dating back to 1958. The manager of Valley National Bank robbed in 1960 followed the getaway vehicle and saw a man later later identified as Benjamin Paddock get into a 1960 Pontiac with distinctive aerials. Authorities determined a ham radio operator owned the car and cross checked holders of such licenses for their autos. Police narrowed suspects down to two men who owned brand-new Pontiacs. Bank employees identified Benjamin Paddock as the culprit, according to the news clippings. Only weeks had passed since the robbery, but by that time Benjamin Paddock had moved to Las Vegas. FBI agents tracked him down there and attempted to arrest him at a gas station. He attempted to run over one officer with his vehicle in Las Vegas when they arrested him for the Phoenix robbery, police said. Another agent fired a bullet through his windshield and Paddock surrendered. In 1961, he was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. Two prior accusations of bank robberies surrounded Benjamin Paddock but were dropped in court. ► Who is Stephen Paddock?: Police say he killed 59 in Las Vegas rampage ► Worried? How to find your loved ones On Dec. 31, 1968, he escaped from the federal prison in La Tuna. At the time of his escape, authorities said Benjamin Paddock was a diagnosed psychopath and therefore "extremely dangerous." The FBI reported he had suicidal tendencies. The FBI also called him an avid bridge player. His son was a retired accountant with a taste for high-stakes poker who had moved to Nevada in 2015. ► Analysis: After shooting, Trump left with little to offer other than sympathy ► Congress: Gabby Giffords says to 'find the courage' to address gun violence One officer in charge of the FBI Phoenix office said Benjamin Paddock was "a glib, smooth-talking man who is egotistical and arrogant," the Daily Citizen reported. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Benjamin Paddock had earned the nickname "Chrome Dome" because of his habit of shaving his balding head. Ten years later, police located Benjamin Paddock in Oregon, according to a 1978 report in the Arizona Republic. He had been living under the name Bruce Warner Erickson and operated a bingo parlor in Springfield, Ore., which he received a license to open. The authorities' background check and the state's attorney office failed to uncover Benjamin Paddock's true identity, so he was able to open the bingo parlor without being detected. ► Survivors: ‘Blood all over the elevator,’ Las Vegas victims say ► Gun laws: Yes, certain machine guns are legal in Nevada It was opened as part of the nonprofit organization Center for Educational Reform in Eugene, Ore. The elder Paddock even received two traffic tickets while under the false identity in Oregon. FBI agents were alerted to Paddock's whereabouts in Oregon after he was featured in a Springfield newspaper story along with his photo. He had been removed from the FBI Most Wanted List the year before, “when it was felt he no longer fit the Top 10 criteria,” according to FBI archives. ► Girlfriend: Who is Marilou Danley? ► Confusion: Google search spread wrong info on Las Vegas shooting suspect Eric Paddock, Stephen Paddock's brother, said the family was estranged from Benjamin Paddock after Eric's birth, and Benjamin Paddock is now dead. Social Security death records show that Benjamin Paddock died Jan. 18, 1998, in Tarrant County, Texas. The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a facility in Fort Worth, the county's largest city. Sunday night's Las Vegas shooting left at least 59 people dead and injured more than 500 as alleged shooter Stephen Paddock fired down on concertgoers from a hotel room above the Las Vegas strip.
  3. Love it or hate it, millennial pink is the colour of the season, and by the looks of it, here to stay, writes Marchelle Abrahams. A subtle variation of salmon pink, millennial pink is the shade of 2017. Trend forecasters have been chomping at the bit, predicting that the lighter shade of bright pink would soon start dominating all factors of po[CENSORED]r culture. From decor to fashion, its unmistakable influence is hard to ignore, and millennials are embracing it like a warm hug in the dark. There’s just one problem: no one can agree on the actual colour… A cross between nude and skin colour, the jury is still out on the number of shades that actually make up millennial pink. Why is it so po[CENSORED]r? Alana van der Merwe, brand marketing expert with RED Marketing, suggests that the colour is no longer associated with femininity. Instead, it has become the colour mascot for androgynous and gender-neutral fashion trends. “Fashion has often been used as a medium to challenge societal views and ideas, then setting the standards for other industries including beauty, decor and lifestyle,” she notes. But she also points out one very clear reason for its po[CENSORED]rity: “It’s aesthetically pleasing, symbolic and just plain cute!” How did it start? The lines are blurred when it comes to its origins, but some argue that it all started with the release of 2014 movie The Great Budapest Hotel which was an ode of sorts to retro kitsch and a building painted several shades of pink. And then Pantone named rose quartz one of its colours of 2016. Pair that with pale dogwood, the trending colour for spring 2017, and what do you get? NY Mag’s Véronique Hyland described it perfectly when saying: “Pink used to be Malibu Barbie and Bubble Yum. That specific shade of pink is not the one that’s resurfaced. Instead it’s ironic pink, pink without the sugary prettiness.” What’s trending Japanese fashion and beauty brand MINISO, which just opened a store in Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, is just one example of how retailers have taken up with the trend. Headphones, notebooks, and even stationary have been given the millennial pink treatment. Elle Magazine’s Faran Krentcil, during her recap of New York Fashion Week, noted that the trend is far more than a colour - it has become a movement. And NYFW featured designers were happy to jump onboard. Helmut Lang, Victoria Beckham and Anna Sui all tinted their catwalk models in some altered forms of the shade. Pop star Rihanna is one avid fan and embraced it before it became fashionable. Now she’s taken her love for all things pink and even modelled her new Fenty Beauty range on it, showcasing lipsticks and blusher in nudes and soft pinks. Even kitchenware has been tickled pink. French cookware manufacturer Le Creuset has gone as far as releasing a range of millennial pink products, including their bestseller Cast-Iron Heart-Shaped Dutch Want a tea kettle in Millennial Pink? Don’t worry, SMEG has you covered. What about a mixer? KitchenAid’s thought about that too. How about incorporating it into your decor without going into overkill? Mr Price Home suggests a subtle approach by painting a feature wall and incorporating vintage elements with copper lighting.

  4. The Corvette Z06 is comfortably one of the fastest cars on sale, but apparently that's not good enough for Chevy. It's cooking up a new Corvette ZR1 that looks like a track-ready monster. As ever with future cars like this, Chevy hasn't confirmed anything about the ZR1 (or even that it exists, for that matter), but thanks to lots of spy photos and rumors, we have a good idea of what to expect. It's Actually Called the ZR1 Sometimes people refer to an upcoming model by a prior name, even if that name isn't confirmed. Thanks to some Nürburgring spy photos, though, we know that the 2018 ZR1 will actually be called the ZR1. The "ZR1" logo molded into the rim of the wheel pictured above. Plus, its calipers are painted in the same exact color as the 2008 ZR1 "Blue Devil" prototype. Just like the Z06, Chevy is giving customers a choice in body styles for the ZR1. The previous two ZR1s, the C4 and C6, were only offered as coupes, so this is a break from the past for the Corvette. Purists may scoff at the idea of a drop-top ZR1, but there's no doubt it'll be good for broadening the car's appeal, and the current Corvette convertible is respectably stiff. It'll Get an Optional Automatic Too Again, purists might want to look away. Based on the audio from various spy videos of ZR1s we've seen, it sounds a lot like Chevrolet is testing an automatic ZR1. Just listen to its quick, smooth upshifts—no human could replicate that. Presumably, that means an automatic transmission will be an option, just as it is on the Z06. There's a question about what automatic transmission the ZR1 will get, however. Currently, the Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Z06 are all offered with optional eight-speed automatics, but Chevy just launched a newer 10-speed auto for the Camaro ZL1. It wouldn't be a surprise to see this gearbox offered in the ZR1. Chevy Is Testing Two Different Aero Packages It's almost impossible not to notice the ZR1's big rear wing, but interestingly, it looks like two different-sized wings will be offered. We've only seen coupes testing with the bigger of the two wings, so perhaps Chevy is cooking up a 1LE-esque package for the hardtop ZR1. It appears that the ZR1 will get some other aerodynamic changes too. Prototypes with both small and large rear wings have a big, aggressive front splitter, and surely the camouflage is hiding other aero bits too. It Could Get a Supercharged DOHC V8 A document leaked late last year revealed that the Corvette would get some sort of dual-overhead-cam V8 next year, code-named LT5. That document didn't say specifically that the ZR1 would get this motor, but we've got a hunch. Why? For starters, check out the ZR1's super tall hood. It's way taller than those used on other Corvette models, which have cam-in-block V8s. An engine with overhead cams is physically much taller than a cam-in-block motor, so the Corvette so equipped would need a taller hood for clearance. There's also the matter of the name—Chevrolet first used the LT5 designation for the original ZR1's motor, a DOHC V8. The first LT5 was a 32-valve, 380-hp powerhouse designed by Lotus Engineering, which GM owned at the time, and built by Mercury Marine. We can't imagine Chevy passing up the opportunity to reference the original ZR1 with this new engine. And why are we certain it's supercharged? Just listen to it. That supercharger whine is unmistakable. It's Been Tested at the Nürburgring and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Chevy is clearly serious about making sure the ZR1 offers impressive race-track performance. We've seen ZR1s testing extensively at Germany's Nürburgring, one of the toughest proving grounds for any car, and we've spotted some at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. It's Loud If you've watched any videos of ZR1 prototypes testing at the Nürburgring, you probably noticed that the cars used odd, left-facing exhaust pipes that stuck way out past the body. Apparently, this helps the Corvette skirt the Nürburgring's 100-db noise limits by aiming the sound away from the track's noise-testing equipment, which is on the right-hand side. Don't expect to see these strange exhaust pipes reach production, but do expect the ZR1 to be gloriously noisy. While there is a lot we know about the ZR1, there are still plenty of unknowns. We don't even know when it'll make its debut. Initially, we heard that we'll see the ZR1 at an IMSA race this summer, but the leaves are already starting to change outside of R&T's New York office. Plus, there's only one IMSA WeatherTech Series race left this season—Petit Le Mans held at Road Atlanta on October 7th. There's also rumors that the ZR1 will be unveiled at an event at the National Corvette Museum. It'll definitely debut soon, but we're not quite sure how soon. In any case, it looks like it'll be worth the wait.
  5. DONALD Trump has called the mass Las Vegas shooting “an act of pure evil” in his first national address following the massacre. “My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock and grief,” he said from the White House on Monday. Mr Trump said Americans would come together in the wake of the unprecedented carnage. “In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one. And it always has. We call upon the bonds that unite us, our faith, our family, and our shared values,” he said. “We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity. Our unity cannot be shattered by evil, our bonds cannot be broken by violence, and though we feel such great anger, at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens, it is our love that defines us today.” Four hours after the massacre, Mr Trump tweeted his sympathies to Las Vegas shooting victims and their families. “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!” he wrote. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr rump was “briefed on the horrific tragedy in Las Vegas.” She said that “we are monitoring the situation closely and offer our full support to state and local officials. All of those affected are in our thoughts and prayers.”
