  10. Donald Trump is a man in a hurry. In the few short months he has been in office, the US president has sought and failed to bring peace to Gaza and Ukraine. He has bombed Yemen. He has launched a global trade war. Now he is turning his attention to Iran. This has always been on the president's jobs list. For Trump, Iran is unfinished business from his first term. The issue remains the same as it was then: what can stop Iran seeking a nuclear weapon? Iran denies it has any such ambition. But other countries believe the Islamic republic wants at the very least the capacity to build a nuclear warhead, a desire that some fear could spark an arms race or even all-out war in the Middle East. In 2015, Iran agreed a deal with the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China. It was called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Under its provisions, Iran would limit its nuclear ambitions - and allow in international inspectors - in return for getting economic sanctions lifted. But Trump pulled the US out of the deal in 2018, claiming it rewarded terrorism by funding Iran's proxy militias such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The US reimposed sanctions. Iran subsequently ignored some of the deal's restrictions and enriched more and more uranium nuclear fuel. Analysts fear Iran could soon have enough weapons-grade uranium to make a nuclear warhead. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) watchdog estimates Iran's stockpile of 60% enriched uranium could make about six bombs if it was enriched to the next and final level. Within days of his inauguration, Trump restored his former policy of so-called "maximum pressure" on Iran. On 4 February, with his trademark fat felt-tip pen, he signed a memorandum ordering the US Treasury to impose further sanctions on Iran and punish countries violating existing sanctions, especially those buying Iranian oil. Now the White House is hoping to match that economic pressure with diplomacy. Last month, Trump sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The president offered to begin negotiations and sought a deal within a couple of months. Now he has agreed to direct discussions between US and Iranian officials in Oman at the weekend. The US threat to Iran is explicit: agree a deal or face military action. "If the talks aren't successful with Iran, I think Iran is going to be in great danger," Trump said on Monday. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgm81m7dvdro
  11. The giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini, formerly also Octopus apollyon ), also known as the North Pacific giant octopus, is a large marine cephalopod belonging to the genus Enteroctopus. Its spatial distribution includes the coastal North Pacific, along California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Russia, Japan, and Korean Peninsula. It can be found from the intertidal zone down to 2,000 m (6,600 ft), and is best adapted to cold, oxygen-rich water. It is the largest octopus species, based on a scientific record of a 71-kg (156-lb) individual weighed live. https://animalia.bio/giant-pacific-octopus?category=5
  12. Pirelli has launched a new lineup of all-terrain tires in North America called the Scorpion XTM AT. The off-road rubber is available in two variants: one for gas-powered trucks and SUVs and the other with Pirelli's Elect technology for vehicles with plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. There are 21 sizes available at launch (10 standard sizes and 11 Elect sizes) with wheel diameters ranging from 17 to 20 inches for the standard tires and 18 to 22 inches for the Elect tires. It's no secret that the idea of both commuting to work and tackling the wilderness in the same vehicle has great appeal in the United States. In fact, many Americans already own a truck or an SUV built to do just that—think a Toyota Tacoma parked outside Kroger with a roof tent. Pirelli is entering the highest level of this lucrative market with its latest and most extreme all-terrain tire, the Scorpion XTM AT, which was developed in Texas and Brazil with the goal "to make Americans happy," according to Ian Coke, chief technical officer of Pirelli North America. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a64391434/pirelli-scorpion-xtm-all-terrain-tire/
  13. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice's two goals from free-kicks in the Champions League against Real Madrid provided a simple reminder. There are not many better sights in football than watching a dead ball fly into the back of the net from a long distance. Rice had never scored from a direct free-kick until Tuesday, when his two moments of brilliance helped Arsenal to a 3-0 victory in the first leg of the quarter-final at Emirates Stadium. The first was curled around the wall and past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to put Arsenal ahead after 58 minutes, before Rice sent the ball bending into the top right-hand corner again 12 minutes later. According to the stats, the chances of Rice scoring one of those goals were slim, never mind both. Former West Ham and England goalkeeper Rob Green said "both were impossible to save". But which one was better? What were the walls doing? And why are fewer free-kicks scored in football now? Which one was better? Via Opta's expected goals (xG) model, Rice's first free-kick had an xG of 0.037 (3.7%) and his second an xG of 0.063 (6.3%). The probability of scoring both comes in at a combined total of 0.23%. Or put in layman's terms, a one-in-435 chance. But which one was better? BBC pundit Green, who was at the Emirates for CBS, said it was the second. "There is a series of things that happen. First of all, it is Courtois in goal," said Green. "Secondly, when someone shoots at what is called 'the goalkeeper's side' (the part of the goal not covered by the wall) like Rice did and they score, then people go 'oh, it's the goalkeeper's side'. "Well, this time Rice does that against the best goalkeeper in the world, and at no point has anyone mentioned that Courtois should get anywhere near it. "It is hard to think of how a right-footed player could have placed it any better, and with any more power than that. It was the definition of a perfect free-kick. "My old goalkeeper coach at West Ham, Ludek Miklosko, used to call that top corner of the goal next to the stanchion 'the spiders' web'. When I worked on an England game with John Murray for BBC Radio 5 Live last month, he said that in Brazil they call it 'where the owls sleep'. Every country has a different saying for it - we know it as 'top bins'." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ckg22y9rz96o
  14. An artist said he was delighted after his charcoal portrait of Tom Cruise featured in official promotion for the actor's latest film. The Instagram page for Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning posted a time-lapse video of Wilf Elliott drawing his artwork. The 21-year-old, from Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, said his collaboration with producer Paramount Pictures was "the most incredible opportunity I have ever had". Mr Elliott met Cruise in person on set last year to deliver some of his other charcoal drawings of the Hollywood actor. "If it wasn't for the handover with Tom, then this opportunity wouldn't have come about," he explained. "I just wanted the day to come around so quickly, I've been holding it to myself for so long... so I just could not wait to get it out there." Mr Elliott said the A1 canvas took somewhere in the region of 60 to 80 hours to complete. He cast the original Tom Cruise photo on to canvas, created a stencil and then filled in the charcoal and some red paint for the lettering. He said he drew the picture in December to get ahead while discussions were still ongoing for the collaboration. Earlier in the year, he flew to Sweden to deliver a portrait of the late DJ Avicii to the musician's father, Klas Bergling. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c79d412eeqqo
  15. Confidence in the US economy is plummeting as investors dumped government debt amid escalating concerns over the impact of Donald Trump's tariffs. The interest rate on US bonds - traditionally considered a "safe haven" investment in times of crisis - spiked on Wednesday to touch the highest since February. Sweeping taxes on goods being imported into the US from around 60 countries came into effect at midnight, while a tit-for-tat trade war between America and China gathered pace. After the US went ahead with a 104% tariff on products from China, Beijing hit back with 84% levy on American products. Stock markets have been falling sharply over the past few days in reaction to Trump pressing ahead with tariffs. However, the sale of bonds - which are essentially an IOU issued by a government to raise money from financial markets - poses a major problem for the world's biggest economy. Buying US government debt, or Treasuries as they are known, is viewed as a safe investment because the state will pay back what it owes. But on Wednesday, the yield - or interest rate - on US bonds touched the highest level since February at 4.5%, making it more expensive for America to borrow money. Some analysts suggested that the US Federal Reserve might be forced to step in if turbulence continues, in a move reminiscent of the Bank of England's emergency action in 2022 following Liz Truss's mini-Budget. "We see no other option for the Fed but to step in with emergency purchases of US Treasuries to stabilise the bond market," said George Saravelos, global head of FX research at Deutsche Bank. "We are entering uncharted territory," he said, adding that it was "very hard" to predict how markets would react in the coming days as the bond market suggested investors had "lost faith in US assets". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yrr0e7499o

  17. This is a chance for you to see what the various members of the Pocket Gamer team are planning to play over this weekend and will, hopefully, give you an idea of some of the weird and wonderful things we get up to when we’re not keeping you up to speed with the latest news and tips. Heck, you might even find a new game to play. Yeah, I’ve been playing TCG Pocket more. I’m up to 66/75 now, up from 17, while also moving the needle on the last expansion up to 148 (with only 7 more to nab!). This weekend I’m planning on finishing off Triumphant Light so that I can get back to finishing Space-Time Smackdown before they release another pack. I might even (but probably not) resort to trading in order to realise my grand plan. In other news, I’ve been playing more of Romance of the Three Kingdoms Heroes, which is like a micro strategy, chess-adjacent situation. I’m hoping to punch further into that. That, and I’m intending to finally sign off on FF1+, which I downloaded a while back for nostalgia, but got heavily distracted away from it by the massive PoGo Unova Tour last week. There was a lot of talk about morality systems and the sheer difference in power levels between good and evil. This topic is all over the console and PC worlds, but it hasn't really popped up in my mobile gaming journey. Since Cat is keeping the secret "Be evil, do more stuff" title to herself (or it's just not open to the public yet), I must delve into the app stores, itch, and tap, to see what I can find there. Plenty of options to be an evil overlord or benevolent leader when setting up a company or a society, but that has your role set in stone. I've got to look for those morally flexible characters who can change the world by choosing to do nothing if they want. https://www.pocketgamer.com/the-wrapp/wrapp-23/
