Turkish authorities have detained the mayor of Istanbul, just days before he was due to be selected as a presidential candidate. Ekrem Imamoglu, from the secular Republican People's Party (CHP), is seen as one of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's strongest political rivals. Prosecutors accused him of corruption and aiding a terrorist group, calling him a "criminal organisation leader suspect". Police detained 100 people - including other politicians, journalists and businessmen - as part of the investigation, and the Istanbul governor's office has imposed four days of restrictions in the city. Imamoglu said online "the will of the people cannot be silenced". In a social media video he said he filmed while police were outside his home, he vowed to "stand resolute" for the people of Turkey "and all who uphold democracy and justice worldwide". And in a handwritten note posted on his X account after his arrest, he said the people of Turkey would respond to "the lies, the conspiracies and the traps" against him. Protests have erupted on Turkey's streets and university campuses, and in underground stations, with crowds chanting anti-government slogans. It is a display of public anger not seen in years. There were reports of clashes between protesters and police in Turkey's largest city. Reuters news agency footage shows police using pepper spray pellets to disperse crowds outside Istanbul University. The government has banned public gatherings in Istanbul as part of the four days of restrictions. But more protests are anticipated nationwide as opposition leaders, including Imamoglu's wife, urge people to "raise their voices". Many streets in Istanbul have also been closed to traffic, while some metro lines have also cancelled their services. UK-based internet watchdog Netblocks said on Wednesday Turkey had severely restricted access to social media sites like X, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. 'A coup against our next president' The arrest comes as part of a major crackdown nationwide in recent months, targeting opposition politicians, municipalities, journalists and figures in the entertainment industry. Following the Istanbul mayor's arrest, concerns over Turkey's shift toward autocracy were expressed on social media, with some calling for an opposition boycott of the upcoming presidential elections, arguing that a fair and democratic vote is no longer possible. Imamoglu's party, the CHP, even condemned the arrests as "a coup against our next president", a sentiment widely echoed by pro-opposition voices. But Turkey's justice minister criticised those who linked Erdogan to the arrests. Yilmaz Tunc said it was "extremely dangerous and wrong" to suggest this was a political move, insisting that nobody was above the law in Turkey. Erdogan and his party have also denied the claims, insisting that Turkey's judiciary is independent. He has been in power for 22 years. Last year, Imamoglu won a second term as Istanbul's mayor, when his CHP party swept local elections there and in Ankara. It was the first time since Erdogan came to power that his party was defeated across the country at the ballot box. The elections were also a personal blow to the president, who grew up in and became mayor of Istanbul on his rise to power. Dozens of police officers were involved in the early-morning raid on Imamoglu's house in Istanbul. The CHP's presidential candidate selection, in which Imamoglu is the only person running, is set to take place on Sunday. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yren8mxp8o

Our spy photographers caught a glimpse of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck. The new photos show a heavily camouflaged crew-cab configuration and give us our first look at the interior screen setup for the upcoming truck. The new pickup is expected to arrive sometime next year as a 2027 model-year vehicle. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is immensely po[CENSORED]r. Across the Silverado lineup in the United States, Chevy sold more than 540,000 trucks last year alone. Now, our spy photographers have caught a glimpse of what appears to be the next-generation Silverado 1500, which we expect to show up late next year as a 2027 model. The overall size and shape of the Silverado appear to stay in line with the current truck, but it's hard to gather specifics without seeing under the prototype's heavy camouflage. We can see what look to be production-ready headlights peaking out from behind the coverings. The new units appear to emulate the jagged LED design found on the current crop of Chevy HD trucks. The back of the truck sports a new quad-tip exhaust design that replaces the current dual-exhaust look. The photos also give us our first look at the Silverado's updated interior, which will clearly feature ample screen acreage. From what we can see, the dashboard houses one continuous slab of glass extending from in front of the driver toward the center of the cabin. We've seen General Motors implement a similar design on a number of Cadillac models that feature a giant 33.0-inch screen stretching across the dash.Under the hood, we don't expect Chevy to make any drastic engine changes with the arrival of the next generation. Instead, we expect the four powertrains available now to continue on, with minor updates to fuel economy and performance. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a64219843/2027-chevy-silverado-spy-photos/

The iconic 90s hip-hop artist was known for his pained intensity. But Dear Mama, a tribute to his mother Afeni, showed off his softer side – and still brings listeners to tears. "Not everyone is so lucky and gets to experience the love of a mother for a long time," explains DJ Master Tee, whose words are staggered due to deep emotion, before he starts to cry down the phone. "A lot of people's mothers died way too early… and I think Tupac Shakur understood that well," the producer continues. "He didn't just want to make a song that celebrated the mothers who are here, but also the ones that passed away." DJ Master Tee made the original silky-smooth beat (which was later adapted by co-producer Tony Pizarro) for Dear Mama, the late rap legend Tupac's candid tribute to the many sacrifices of his single mother Afeni Shakur. She was an activist in the radical political group The Black Panthers, who subsequently struggled with drug addiction and to make ends meet while raising her two children. This song is the pained yet ultimately joyful epicentre of Tupac's otherwise death-obsessed third studio album, Me Against the World, which was released 30 years ago this month. In the context of an album where Tupac shifts from suicidal (So Many Tears) to grief-stricken (Lord Knows), repeatedly using the word "hopeless", Dear Mama feels like uncovering a diamond at the bottom of a pitch-black mine. "Even as a crack phene, momma / You always were a black queen, momma," he famously rapped. This lyric alone represented a radical shift in rap storytelling in the way it represented victims of the so-called Crack Era, when use of the drug soared across the US during the 1980s and 90s. Previously, rap artists had stripped away the humanity of crack addicts via slurs such as "basehead" and "zombie". But, Tee says, Tupac saw addicts "as victims of the state, who needed our support". And although Tupac expresses sadness over a childhood with little money – where he and his sister Sekyiwa observed the matriarch of their family descend into the hell of addiction – he leads with empathy for Afeni Shakur's struggle. He chants out all his words with a bear-hug warmth, confirming that he never stopped seeing Afeni as a superhero. In celebrating her, Tupac serves to pay respect to the struggle of single mothers everywhere, as well as mothers full stop – a sentiment the whole world can appreciate. This is reflected in the numbers, with the song racking up over 345 million streams on Spotify alone. Indeed, Dear Mama remains one of the rapper's most celebrated tracks: in 2009, it became the first song by a solo rapper to be inducted into the US Library of Congress's National Recording Registry, awarded for its profound cultural significance. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20250318-how-tupac-wrote-the-ultimate-anthem-for-single-mothers

The Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is a parrot native to South America. With a length (from the top of its head to the tip of its long pointed tail) of about one meter, it is longer than any other species of parrot. It is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species.Hyacinth macaws have impressive cobalt blue feathers, which contrast with their bare yellow eye ring (which, in other species of macaw is white) and the yellow patch of skin beside the lower bill. Their irises are dark-brown in color and their feet are dark gray. Females and males are nearly indistinguishable, but the females are typically a little more slender. On juveniles, the upper bill is paler and the tail is shorter. https://animalia.bio/hyacinth-macaw?collection=35

Judging by some of the headlines today in Russia, Moscow believes that the latest telephone conversation between Presidents Putin and Trump went well - certainly for the Kremlin. "Putin and Trump agreed to work together on Ukraine resolution," concludes Izvestia. "Record-long Putin-Trump call," declares Komsomolskaya Pravda. The paper's website adds: "As things stand Russia has scored a diplomatic victory here." Why are some in Russia claiming "victory" after this two-hour phone call? Probably because, by the end of it, Vladimir Putin hadn't been pressured into making any major concessions to Ukraine or to the United States. On the contrary, he had - in effect - rejected President Trump's idea of an immediate unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Follow latest updates on this story Instead of pressuring Moscow with the threat of even tougher sanctions and penalties, to get Russia to sign up to its plan, the US administration reacted by praising the Kremlin leader. "We had a great call," Donald Trump told Fox News. "I would commend President Putin for all he did today on that call to move his country close to a final peace deal," said Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff. Not only did Moscow not agree to an unconditional ceasefire, President Putin set his own pre-conditions for peace. They include an end to Western military aid to Kyiv and intelligence sharing with the Ukrainians, as well as a halt to mobilisation in Ukraine. Such conditions are widely viewed as a way of securing Ukraine's capitulation. It's hard to see Kyiv agreeing to any of that. But could the Trump administration eventually be persuaded, by Moscow, that such conditions are acceptable? And if so, would Washington force Ukraine to accept them? Much may depend on whether the Kremlin can convince President Trump he has more to gain from developing good ties with Moscow than by defending Ukraine's corner. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjevg23enggo

A midwife in Texas has been arrested for allegedly providing illegal abortions and operating a network of unlawful clinics in the Houston area. Maria Margarita Rojas has been charged with providing an abortion and practising medicine without a licence, according to the office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Authorities accused Ms Rojas, 48, of operating multiple clinics in Houston where she allegedly performed illegal abortions in her clinic, violating the state's restrictive abortion laws. Ms Rojas faces second-degree felony charges, which carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 (£7,700) if convicted. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c74kr8vp4w0o

Welcome to Car and Driver's Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here). Our long-term Toyota Grand Highlander with the new 362-hp Hybrid Max powertrain has been the subject of an ongoing mystery amongst our staff. One of the most common complaints leveled at the otherwise great three-row SUV is a relative lack of range on road trips. Part of the issue is that most hybrids—this one included—don’t achieve their EPA highway fuel-economy figures when traveling at real-world interstate speeds of 75-plus miles per hour. In our highway fuel-economy test, which we run at a steady 75 mph, the Grand Highlander averaged 24 mpg versus the EPA's 27-mpg figure. But on the real road trips our staff has undertaken, with speeds sometimes higher, and through frigid winter weather with knobbier all-weather Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady 2 tires installed, we often see mpg averages in the low 20s. Something Strange with the Range But that doesn’t entirely explain why we are regularly stopping to refuel at increments less than 300 miles, and we’ve never made it more than 400 miles on a tank. Toyota’s published specifications state that it has a 17.2-gallon fuel tank, but our regular fill-ups, even when running dangerously close to zero miles on the indicated trip computer, are in the high 13- to low 14-gallon range. It’s not just us, either, as we've seen plenty of similar discussions on owners' forums. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a64207686/toyota-grand-highlander-hybrid-fuel-range-test/

Stylish and experimental, Breathless heralded a new era of film-making when it was released 65 years ago. In 1964, its director told the BBC why he broke every rule he could. Jean-Luc Godard was crystal clear about what he planned to do with his feature-length film debut, Breathless (À bout de souffle), which was released 65 years ago this month. He wanted to blow up the whole idea of what cinema was. In 1964, the director told the BBC's Olivier Todd: "It was a film which took everything the cinema had done – girls, gangsters, cars – exploded all this and put an end once and for all to the old style." Stylish and semi-improvised, Breathless seemed revolutionary when it hit French screens on 16 March 1960. With its fragmented editing, offbeat dialogue and nonchalant approach to storytelling, it helped rewrite the language of modern cinema. As renowned US film critic Roger Ebert wrote: "No debut film since Citizen Kane in 1942 has been as influential." On its surface, Breathless's plot resembles that of a hard-boiled crime thriller. It tells the story of amoral, impulsive petty criminal Michel Poiccard (played by Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his doomed relationship with the enigmatic Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg), an American journalism student living in Paris. The film's plot plays out as Michel tries to evade arrest after murdering a policeman: he struggles to collect the money necessary to fund his escape and to convince the ambivalent Patricia to flee with him to Italy. But its director was not so much concerned with its crime narrative as he was with shattering cinematic conventions. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20250313-jean-luc-godard-on-the-film-that-changed-cinema

The Sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small arboreal gliding possum that belongs to the marsupial infraclass. It is so called due to loving sweet food such as sugar and honey, while the word 'glider' refers to their gliding habit when moving between trees. Sugar gliders have very similar habits and appearance to the flying squirrel, despite not being closely related - an example of convergent evolution. The scientific name of these animals translates from Latin as "short-headed rope-dancer", a reference to their canopy acrobatics. The Sugar glider has a squirrel-like body with a long, partially (weakly) prehensile tail. The fur coat is thick, soft, and is usually blue-grey; although some have been known to be yellow, tan, or (rarely) albino. A black stripe is seen from its nose to midway on its back. Its belly, throat, and chest are cream in color. Males have four scent glands, located on the forehead, chest, and two paracloacal that are used for marking group members and territory. Scent glands on the head and chest of males appear as bald spots. Females also have a paracloacal scent gland and a scent gland in the pouch but do not have scent glands on the chest or forehead. The males of this species are typically larger than the females. https://animalia.bio/sugar-glider?collection=37

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has been left out of Argentina's squad for their next two World Cup qualifiers. The 37-year-old returned to Miami's starting line-up for their Major League Soccer win over Atlanta United but reportedly picked up an injury during Sunday's game. Inter later confirmed the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has a "low-grade" injury to his adductor muscle. Messi was rested for three Miami games before coming off the bench and scoring in last week's Concacaf Champions Cup win at Jamaican side Cavalier. Argentina can secure qualification for next year's World Cup in this round of games as the holders visit Uruguay and host Brazil. They lead South America's 10-team qualifying group by five points from Uruguay with six games remaining, with Brazil seven points adrift in fifth. The top six qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup while the seventh-placed team goes into a play-off. After 12 rounds, Messi is the top scorer with six goals, taking his overall tally to 112 from 191 international appearances. Argentina will also be without injured Roma striker Paulo Dybala and River Plate full-back Gonzalo Montiel. Brazil will be without Messi's former Barcelona team-mate Neymar as a thigh injury has denied the Santos forward, 33, a return to the national team. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cx2814gx3lwo

A group of scientists due to work together for months at a remote Antarctic research station has been rocked after a member of the team was accused of assault. About 10 researchers typically stay at the South African-run base, which sits about 170km (about 105 miles) from the edge of the ice shelf and is difficult to reach. But a spokesperson for the South African government told the BBC "there was an assault" at the station, following earlier allegations of inappropriate behaviour from inside the camp. In a further message seen by the BBC, the South African environment ministry said it was responding to the concerns with "utmost urgency". South Africa's Sunday Times, which was first to report the story, said members of the team had pleaded to be rescued. The ministry also said that those in the team had been subject to "a number of evaluations that include background checks, reference checks, medical assessment as well as a psychometric evaluation by qualified professionals", which all members had cleared. The Sanae IV research base is located more than 4,000km from mainland South Africa and harsh weather conditions mean scientists can be cut off there for much of the year. The current team were expected to be at the Sanae IV base until December. South African research expeditions have been taking place since 1959. The team to the Sanae IV base typically comprises a doctor, two mechanics, three engineers, a meteorological technician and a couple of physicians. These expeditions, with harsh weather conditions mandating a lot of time spent in a confined indoor space, normally run without incident, and team members have to undergo a range of psychological assessments before travelling. But on Sunday, South Africa's Sunday Times reported that one member of the team had sent an email warning of "deeply disturbing behaviour" by a colleague and an "environment of fear". A South African government spokesperson told the BBC that the alleged assault was triggered by "a dispute over a task the team leader wanted the team to do – a weather dependant task that required a schedule change". Incidents in Antarctica are rare, but not unprecedented. In 2018 there were reports of a stabbing at the Russian-operated Bellingshausen research station. Psychologists point to the effect that isolation can have on human behaviour. "One thing we know from these rare occurrences, when something bad happens in enforced isolation or capsule working, is that it's often the small things, tiny things that can blow up into conflict," said Craig Jackson, professor of workplace health psychology at Birmingham City University, and a chartered member of the British Psychological Society. "So issues about hierarchy, about workload allocation, even small things about leisure time or rations or food portions can rapidly flare up to become something much larger than they typically are," he told the BBC. Gabrielle Walker, a scientist and author who has been on expeditions to Antarctica, said working in such close proximity to a small group of colleagues had risks. "You know exactly how they put their coffee cup down and what direction the handle points in; you know that they scratch their nose three times before they sit down; you know everything about them. "And in the bad circumstances, it can start to irritate you… because there's nothing else – there's no other stimulus and you're with people 24/7," she said. Sources within the Antarctic research community have told the BBC that South Africa has access to an ice-capable ship and aircraft if needed. But any rescue operation would have to contend with the harsh climate, with temperatures well below freezing and the possibility of strong winds.
