Once Human, the post-apocalyptic open-world survival game from NetEase has seen a peak player count of 230,000 during its initial PC release. The game, which is set to release in September for mobile, has also teased some new updates that are coming hot off the heels of this announcement. The two big additions are set to be a PvP encounter for the Mayflies and Rosetta factions, and a PvE area in a new northern mountain region set to feature new enemies and more. Once Human, which is set in a world that has suffered a catastrophic event resulting in borderline supernatural phenomena, is one of NetEase's hotly-anticipated releases. However, surprisingly, despite seemingly being ready to launch, NetEase has chosen to push back the mobile release for Once Human, which is still slated for September. Once Human has still grabbed the seventh top seller position, and number five on the most-played list since launch, however. We should note the particular wording of 230,000 'peak' players. This means that the average number of players so far might be lower, and a fall-off from the peak so close to launch may not be a great sign for NetEase. Especially when it sits under the 300,000 wishlists initially taken on Steam. While the developer has made its name on mobile it seems to be making a major push towards PC. And while Once Human looks to be impressive both in graphics and in gameplay, it may be a bit much for NetEase to hope that they'll be able to switch up their primary audience so quickly. If there's anything you could say about Krafton's PUBG Mobile, it's that it doesn't lack in terms of unusual collaborations. I'm talking about casual cruelty rather than deliberate unkindness – but the consequences of these slip-ups are damaging. While writing my recent book on the science of social connection, I discovered that "ambivalent relationships" – people who blow both hot and cold – can cause even more harm to wellbeing than purely spiteful figures who are predictably unpleasant. Fortunately, research findings can help us develop simple-yet-powerful strategies to identify our worst habits and mitigate their damage. Here are my five favourite lessons to avoid being an accidental frenemy. Be consistent No one likes to be kept in a state of uncertainty – a fact that can be seen in people's responses to physical pain. Archy de Berker at the UCL Institute of Neurology in the UK, and his colleagues, asked people to play a computer game that delivered a mild electric shock whenever they found a snake hiding under a virtual rock. To examine the effects of uncertainty on the stress response, the researchers varied how likely it would be that a rock would be hiding a snake across the course of the experiment, and measured the physiological signs of anxiety – such as sweat and pupil dilation. Quite surprisingly, the participants tended to show a more pronounced stress response when there was only a 50% chance of being shocked, compared with scenarios when they knew for certain that the pain was coming. Fairweather behaviour may put the people around us in a similar state of anticipation. In studies investigating unpredictable friendships, scientists ask participants to imagine going to a friend for advice, understanding or a favour. Avoid the illusion of transparency Each of us is trapped in our own minds, but we overestimate how well others can read our emotional state – a phenomenon that is sometimes known as the illusion of transparency. This may be evident at job interviews: we assume that our nerves are written all over our face – but the anxious feelings are often far more difficult to discern than we realise. This common cognitive error may also prevent us from sharing our appreciation of others, giving them the impression that they are neglected and undervalued. It is, of course, possible that our body language will convey our warmth and appreciation to others, but we can't rely on that fact – meaning that we would often do far better to express those feelings in words. French Prime Minister Michel Barnier faces a vote of no confidence in his minority government after using special powers to push through a social security budget bill without a vote by MPs. The government is unlikely to survive the vote, which was triggered this afternoon by the radical left France Unbowed (LFI) opposition party and Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN). It is likely to take place on Wednesday. Despite last-minute concessions, Barnier clearly did not think he would be able to get his budget bill over the line. The New Po[CENSORED]r Front, an alliance of several left-wing parties, came out top against Macron's supporters and the far right following early elections in July. The alliance was left furious by Macron's decision to veer to the centre right by picking Barnier as his new prime minister, and promised to vote against the government. This has meant that Barnier has until now had to rely on the RN for his government's survival. The budget bill sought to rein in France's spiralling deficit through €60bn (£49bn) in tax rises and spending cuts. Because he lacked a majority, Barnier was forced to make concessions to critics. These included scrapping a previously planned hike in electricity tax, as well as plans for a less generous prescription drug reimbursement policy from next year. But the new version of the social security budget remained unacceptable to the opposition. He used article 49.3 of the French constitution, which allows the text of a bill to be passed without a vote, to push through his 2025 budget after the RN joined the left in opposing it. "I don't think French people will forgive us for choosing party interests over the future of the country," Barnier told MPs on Tuesday as he explained the reasons for his decision. "Now, everybody will need to assume their own responsibility as I have assumed mine." Marine Le Pen explained the RN position prior to the motion being tabled. "Barnier didn't listen to the 11 million voters of the RN... He said everyone should assume their own responsibility, and that's what we will do," she said. Barnier has warned of the financial and political effects of unseating him, but Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI, said on Monday that "there will not be chaos once Mr Barnier and his government have gone". "We are now experiencing political chaos as a result of both Mr Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency." Barnier was invited to form a government by President Emmanuel Macron in September. RN lawmakers and the left combined have enough votes to topple Barnier. If Barnier doesn't survive Wednesday's vote, he will remain in place as a caretaker prime minister until Macron announces a new government. That could be a new majority government - unlikely given the splintering of the French parliament - or a technocratic government, to steer the country until new elections can be held next summer.
