It is trying to pass new legislation to allow the scheme to go ahead, after the Supreme Court said the plans were unlawful. What is the Rwanda asylum plan? Under a five-year agreement, the government said some asylum seekers arriving in the UK would be sent to Rwanda, to have their claims processed there. If successful, they could be granted refugee status and allowed to stay. If not, they could apply to settle in Rwanda on other grounds, or seek asylum in another "safe third country". No asylum seeker would be able to apply to return to the UK. Under the policy, anyone "entering the UK illegally" after 1 January 2022 could be sent to Rwanda, with no limit on numbers. Ministers have argued the plan would deter people from arriving in the UK on small boats across the English Channel. However, when the scheme was first announced, the most senior Home Office civil servant said there was little evidence the effect would be "significant enough to make the policy value for money". No asylum seeker has yet been sent to Rwanda - a small landlocked country central Africa - 4,000 miles (6,500km) from the UK. https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-61782866

Jeep is considering adding gas-powered versions of the electric Wagoneer S and Recon, Jeep's CEO revealed to Automotive News. The two EVs are set to be built on the STLA Large platform that can also support pure-gas and hybrid powertrains. Jeep also intends to replace the Cherokee by the end of 2025, after discontinuing the model following the 2023 model year. Jeep's first EV, the Wagoneer S, is coming this fall, with the American SUV brand revealing images of the sleek crossover earlier this year and teasing details like a 600-hp all-wheel-drive powertrain. The Wagoneer S was originally unveiled alongside a boxy, off-road-focused EV called the Recon, also due next year. But according to Automotive News, the two electric Jeeps might also end up being offered with internal-combustion engines. The publication recently spoke with Jeep's CEO Antonio Filosa regarding the company's flagging sales. Among the possible solutions, Filosa suggested that Jeep could add gas-powered versions of the Recon and Wagoneer S to help boost sales volumes. If the company sees opportunities to profit with internal-combustion powertrains in either car, "we need to grab them or somebody else will," Filosa said. The Recon and Wagoneer S will be built on the new STLA Large platform, which supports electric, pure-gas, and hybrid powertrains. The hesitancy to go full-on into the EV business aligns with other moves from Jeep's parent company Stellantis, especially as EV sales growth begins to slow. The 2025 Dodge Charger will come with both electric and inline-six powertrains, and there are reports that the next-generation Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, set to use the same platform, will get gas and EV options. In Europe, Stellantis's subcompact crossovers—the Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger, and Alfa Romeo Junior—are being offered with EV and hybrid powertrains. The other main area that Filosa is eying for Jeep's rejuvenation is the mid-size SUV segment, which the brand ditched last year after a decade selling the Cherokee (which we categorize as a compact SUV). Filosa said the plan is first "to launch the products into the mid-size SUV segment," with Automotive News reporting that the Cherokee-sized hole in the lineup could be filled by the end of 2025. Jeep also killed off the subcompact Renegade after the 2023 model year, but the similarly priced Compass has taken over the entry-level crossover duties and seen an uptick in sales. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60524532/jeep-recon-wagoneer-s-ev-possible-gas-models-report/

Sudan, the world's last male northern white rhino, died in 2018. In his final years, he became a global celebrity and conservation icon, helping raise awareness about the brutality of poaching. There was a lot of hope riding on Sudan, the last male northern white rhinoceros. He was labelled the "world's most eligible bachelor" by the dating app Tinder, the "most famous rhino" by various news outlets and a "gentle giant" by the armed guards who watched over him 24-hours-a-day. But Sudan's life carried the baggage of a species decimated by poaching. In the Ol Pejeta conservancy at the foot of Mount Kenya, AFP photojournalist Tony Karumba captured a celebrated snapshot of Sudan on 5 December 2016, approximately 15 months before the rhino's death. At the forefront of Karumba's image is the tender relationship between the humans at the conservancy and Sudan. The photo is iconic but not iconoclastic, exemplifying an ordinary moment of the all-too-late-yet-genuine care that northern white rhinos received from the species that decimated them. Once lost, gone forever, only to live in photos like Karumba's photo series. As Sudan was released from his pen to pasture, Karumba captured his pictures. "There's trust and love all over that moment," says Karumba. "Being in Sudan's presence always felt for me like a visit with a sage; his demeanour, despite his behemoth self, had a way of conveying a calm patience with me and though his minders would always be hovering just outside my camera's frame, he [Sudan] was accepting of my wary intrusions and poised as though he was aware of his symbolism as the last icon of his subspecies." The photo showcases Sudan's craniate profile and his two horns, a trait characterising the white rhino subspecies, shaved off to deter poachers. Sudan's carer calms the two-and-a-half-tonned (2,500 kg)animal, whose head is longer than the man's torso. Karumba's vantage, his low viewpoint on Sudan, "emphasised the power and the stature of the rhino," says Michael Pritchard, programmes director at the Royal Photographic Society in the UK. "The power of this photograph is the interaction between this impressive animal and this human," says Pritchard. "There's a kindness, a relationship." https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240124-the-photo-of-sudan-the-last-male-northern-white-rhino

Liverpool's hopes of ending Jurgen Klopp's reign with a European trophy are over after they failed to overturn a first-leg deficit against Atalanta. The Reds travelled to Italy on the back of a 3-0 defeat at Anfield last Thursday and, despite controlling the game for the large periods, could not find the required goals and lost 3-1 on aggregate. Mohamed Salah's seventh-minute penalty, after a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross was handled, gave them hope. As the first half drew to a close, the Egypt forward lofted well wide when put through one-on-one, but Klopp's side struggled to create meaningful openings in the second period. It marks the end of a difficult 12 days for the Reds, who drew at Manchester United and lost at home to Crystal Palace to surrender their lead at the top of the Premier League. Attention will now turn back to the title race with Liverpool sitting third behind second-placed Arsenal and two points off leaders Manchester City. The league now represents their final chance to give Klopp a fairytale ending to his eight and a half years on Merseyside and add to their success in the Carabao Cup in February. Reaction to Liverpool's Europa League quarter-final exit against Atalanta Liverpool lack creativity as season threatens to peter out Ultimately, Liverpool lost this game in the first leg at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp said they would need to play the "complete game" in Italy to progress, and while they had more than 70% possession, this was Liverpool far from their best. They lacked an incisiveness going forward and with the pace of Darwin Nunez starting on the bench, they failed to get in behind the Atalanta defence and stretch the game. Klopp used his bench, calling for Nunez, Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott with 25 minutes remaining, but it made little difference with the Reds only having two shots in the second half. Their expected goals was a meagre 0.11 in the second period, demonstrating the lack of quality they showed in the final third. Atalanta sit sixth in Serie A, 32 points behind leaders Inter Milan, but they were superb in this tie, defending valiantly and attacking with creativity, and deservedly progress to the last four. Klopp has managed Liverpool in five European finals during his tenure, but there will not be a sixth. Their season is in danger of petering out. Three away games in the Premier League in the next nine days could well define how their campaign pans out from here. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68840310

Operations at Dubai International Airport remain severely disrupted after heavy rains battered the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring countries. The storm pounded the UAE on Tuesday, flooding roads and the sections of the busy international airport. Flash floods have now killed 20 people in Oman and one in the UAE. Some inbound flights resumed on Thursday, but on the whole Dubai International Airport, a major travel hub, is struggling to functio Jonathan Finchett, who is at Dubai International Airport, described "apocalyptic scenes" as he saw families barricading themselves behind luggage trolleys and a man appearing to collapse after what he described as a "stampede" towards check-in. Mr Finchett, from Chester in the UK, landed in Dubai on Tuesday where he was due to catch a connecting flight to Manchester in England. But when he arrived at the airport he found out no flights were leaving Dubai because of the storm, and was told his flight had been rescheduled for 3:00 local time (00:00 BST) on Thursday, organised by the airline Emirates - the single largest carrier at the airport. Mr Finchett said he was advised to arrive four hours before his new flight's check-in time because of the situation at the airport, but at half past midnight he was told "there would be no flights going from Dubai" and check-in for their flight would open at 09:00 on Thursday instead. Mr Finchett then found out his flight had in fact departed for Manchester at 07:00, while he was stuck in the airport unable to get passed check-in. "It had left without us being able to check-in and get on it," he told the BBC in frustration. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68843049
