  3. Google Chrome has been updated with fixes for a zero-day security flaw that was being actively exploited in the wild, according to the search giant. The vulnerability affects a component in Chrome that renders web content on a user's screen, allowing attackers to take advantage of a user's computer when a user visits a maliciously crafted website. Chrome users on all desktop computer platforms will need to ensure that their browser is updated to the latest version in order to ensure that they are safe. According to details shared by the company in a blog post, the latest stable versions of Google Chrome for Windows, macOS, and Linux includes a fix for a security flaw with a 'High' severity rating. Google says it has patched a use after free vulnerability (CVE-2024-4671) is related to the Visuals component on Chrome, reported by an anonymous external researcher. A use after free vulnerability would allow an attacker to access out-of-bounds-memory when a user visits a malicious crafted webpage, by taking advantage of the vulnerability. This would allow them to access data remotely, or gain access to and control the systemNotably, Google's blog post also states that the company "is aware that an exploit for CVE-2024-4671 exists in the wild." As a result, it is imperative that users make sure that they are running on the latest stable version of Chrome — version 124.0.6367.201/.202 for Windows and macOS, and version 124.0.6367.201 for Linux computers. https://www.gadgets360.com/apps/news/google-chrome-update-patch-zero-day-vulnerability-how-to-update-5641119#pfrom=topstory
  5. Dozens of Virginia Commonwealth University students walked out of their graduation ceremony on Saturday, partly over a speaker's response - the state governor - to campus protests. It comes as US school officials brace for possible disruptions of commencement events over Israel-Gaza war protests. Dozens of colleges roiled by protests are holding graduations this weekend. More than 2,000 people have been arrested since protest began mid-April. Social media posts on Saturday showed Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) students in caps and gowns leaving the room as Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin began his commencement address. Some students had criticised the selection of Mr Youngkin as that year's speaker, both for his opposition to a racial literacy requirement being considered by VCU as well as for saying that encampments on college campuses should not be allowed. Video posted online show some of the VCU protesters chanting "disclose, divest - we will not stop we will not rest". Many students protesters in the US are demanding that their schools, many with massive endowments, financially cut ties from Israel. People were clapping so loudly, members of the audience couldn't hear Mr Youngkin speak, Sereen Haddad, a second-year VCU student who helped organise the protest, told the BBC on Saturday evening. Ms Haddad said some 150 people marched outside the ceremony, including students who walked out. Thirteen people, including six students, were arrested at VCU when the encampment there was cleared by police on 29 April. Mr Youngkin's speech went on as planned despite the walk-out. He later posted a message on social media congratulating graduates and did not comment on the protest. What do student protesters at US universities want? 'Student arrests will be my final college memory' At another commencement on Saturday, the University of California Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ opened the ceremony by acknowledging the weeks of demonstrations from protesters. "I'm saddened by how this conflict has divided students, faculty and staff," she said, according to the LA Times. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68996066
  6. England manager Gareth Southgate says his contract situation is "not an issue and never has been" as he enters the final six months of his deal before the European Championship in Germany. Southgate, who has been in charge of the Three Lions since 2016, considered leaving the job after the World Cup quarter-final defeat by France in Qatar but stayed on. The Football Association is keen for Southgate to remain as manager. He will be overseeing a fourth major tournament as manager this summer, as the men’s team look to win their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup. And the 53-year-old, who will have managed the same number of England games as Sir Bobby Robson when the tournament kicks off, says the talk about his future will not be a distraction. "Well, for me, it's not an issue and never has been," Southgate said. "I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be." Southgate has played down links to the Manchester United job with their manager Erik ten Hag under pressure. "There will always be speculation about managers, because if you lose a couple of games, you're in trouble - you win a couple of games and it is a different agenda," Southgate said. "But for me, it [Euro 2024] is a brilliant opportunity. We're looking forward to the tournament. My focus is on how do we go a step further than we went in the last Euros [when they were beaten on penalties in the final by Italy]." Southgate spoke to BBC Sport about how he deals with expectation, fitting all his star players into the England starting line-up, Jude Bellingham and being a spokesman. Southgate will select his initial Euro 2024 squad on Tuesday - Uefa has allowed 26-man squads for the tournament. While England have some of the best attacking options in Europe to choose from, they also have injury concerns in defence, especially at full-back where Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Kieran Trippier have all missed significant periods of the season. Southgate said he had "challenges" that the extra options might help with, but added he will "decide whether 26 is the right amount", saying "there’s no point in taking more players than we need". England will play friendlies against Bosnia-Hergzovina and Iceland before submitting a final squad on the 7 June deadline. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c99z2205v7go
  7. My dad is not a religious man – he goes to the pub when my mum goes to mass – but I’m sure that meeting Oscar was a spiritual experience for him. When they locked eyes across the scrubbed concrete floor of the shelter that Oscar presided over with mob-boss-like remove, an oath of loyalty was sworn. The other cats mewled in vain. I had walked in hoping for a grey kitten akin to Berlioz from The Aristocats and walked out with an aloof ginger tomcat who looked like Brendan Gleeson and possessed the world-weariness of someone who had seen unspeakable things. If cats smoked, he would have been on 30 a day. Everybody loved Oscar. He deigned to tolerate only my dad. We got him when we moved to the countryside. My dad – ever the pragmatist and not prone to superfluous bouts of sentimentality – had insisted we get an outside cat to ward off mice in the winter. He wanted an animal that was utilitarian, low-maintenance, stoical in the face of the abysmal Irish weather. He wanted, in short, himself in feline form. Oscar might as well have sauntered into his life, pulled up a bar stool and ordered a pint of stout. Oscar lived in a wooden house lined with old fleeces, from where he spent hours watching the rain. Really, though, he lived in the garage, the mystery building at the end of the garden that swallowed my dad every evening after dinner. It’s anyone’s guess what went on in there. All I know is that Oscar ran in before him when he opened the door. My mum was less keen on the cat. In an Irish Catholic household like ours, anything with the prefix “good” was shorthand for “probably not for children and definitely not for animals”. The good room, the good cutlery, my good Sunday coat. My dad fed Oscar the good ham. In the hierarchy of domestic crimes, this sits somewhere between dirtying the windows (which Oscar frequently did) and gratuitously putting on the heating. To call it the good ham is to imply that there was other ham, which is false. We ate our jam sandwiches in silence. Male friendship is fascinating to me – I don’t mean that reductively. But, from what I have observed among my dad’s generation and class, it involves few words, an enviable frankness and a trailer. Someone is always borrowing someone else’s trailer. My dad communicated with Oscar in grunts – which is mostly, I should note, how he communicates with his family – but the cadence of the grunts was genial, jokey, two colleagues bonded by the familiar cynicism wrought by another day at the coalface. There was tenderness: once, my dad accidentally clipped Oscar’s tail in the door when he came running over to greet him; I’ve seen less ashen-faced men in a morgue. He would hold him like a baby and rub his stomach. When Oscar died, the garage light stayed off for a week. When I started writing this piece, I dispatched my mum to the attic to try to dig out a picture of Oscar. I knew there would be few; I didn’t know there wouldn’t be any. But knowing the man and knowing the animal, it makes perfect sense: to photograph them would be to put words to it. What they shared wasn’t for others to understand. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/apr/15/the-pet-ill-never-forget-oscar-the-cat-who-opened-my-eyes-to-the-power-of-male-friendship
  8. While shooting ‘Manthan’ on location in the tiny Gujarat village Sanganva, Shyam Benegal directed his cast to wear the same clothes for the 40-45 days duration. “You see, people in that very dry area went for days without bathing because they had so little water, so I told Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah), Smita (Patil), Girish (Karnad), Amrish (Puri), and the others to not change, says Benegal, “if they stank, they would stink jointly!” There’s something poetically apt about a film shot in blistering heat to be showcased at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25): ‘Manthan’ is one of a clutch of eagerly-anticipated films in different sections of the festival — FTII alum Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ enters the Competition section 30 years after Shivaji N Karun’s ‘Swaham’–it is turning out to be a full Indian summer at the Croisette. Here’s a quick look at the other Indian entries. Sandhya Suri’s ‘Santosh’, starring Shahana Goswami is in Un Certain Regard. Karan Kandhari’s ‘Sister Midnight’, with Radhika Apte, is in the Director’s Fortnight, which runs parallel to the festival. Kapadia’s FTII batchmate Maisam Ali’s ‘In Retreat’ with Harish Khanna is in the Cannes sidebar ACID (Association for the Diffusion of Independent Cinema) programme; yet another FTII production, the short film ‘Sunflowers Were The First To Know’ is in the La Cinef competition. And Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov’s set-in-India ‘The Shameless’ has been programmed in the Un Certain Regard. Clearly, this time around more talent on the red carpet will be walking for their films, not just as brand clotheshorses. And about time, too.‘Manthan’, Benegal’s third film, after the ground-breaking ‘Ankur’ and ‘Nishant’, is a lightly-fictionalised account of India’s most successful co-operative movement which revolutionised the collection and production of milk. The feature was commissioned by Dr Verghese Kurien, the pioneer who set up Amul, the nodal agency which connected dairy farmers directly with consumers: so massive was the impact of this radical move, with its illustrious linkages going back to Sardar Patel and his close associate Tribhuvan Das Patel, that it facilitated what became known as Operation Flood and the ‘White Revolution’, fulfilling India’s founding fathers’ dream of making potable milk easily available in every home. https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/naseeruddin-shah-smita-patil-amrish-puri-making-of-manthan-9324121/
  9. "Lucid Earth" is a trademark filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and is probably the name of the brand's upcoming sub-$50K SUV. Lucid Motors also filed trademarks for "Earth Dream Edition" indicating a top-level launch edition trim similar to the Air sedan's initial production run. Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson recently announced the new high-volume, mid-size electric SUV is slated to start production in late 2026. A little internet sleuthing has uncovered the likely name of Lucid's new mid-size electric SUV. InsideEVs first reported that back in January, the California-based EV maker filed a trademark for "Lucid Earth" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Lucid also filed a trademark for "Earth Dream Edition," which could be the forthcoming EV's first trim level to launch. Earlier this week, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson confirmed that the company will build a new high-volume, mid-size electric SUV with a starting price "around $48,000." While he also said that it will begin production sometime in late 2026, no other details were revealed, including what it will be called. Obviously, Earth hasn't yet been officially announced as the name of what will be Lucid's third model, but it seems like a good bet. Not only is the trademark, which was filed on Jan. 31, 2024, currently pending and awaiting examination by the USPTO, but it also strikes a similar tone as Lucid's other two models, the Air sedan and Gravity SUV. The sedan launched with a fully loaded Dream Edition trim that was only offered for a single model year. We expect the Gravity to follow suit, and with Lucid filing a trademark for "Earth Dream Edition," it stands to reason that the mid-size SUV will get the same treatment. Along with an official name, we're still waiting to learn more details about Lucid's new more affordable model, so stay tuned. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60760323/lucid-earth-trademark-new-suv-name/
  10. Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to replace his long-standing ally Sergei Shoigu as defence minister, the Kremlin has announced. The 68-year-old has been in the role since 2012 and is to be appointed secretary of Russia's Security Council. Papers published by the upper chamber of the Russian parliament said Mr Shoigu will be replaced by Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov. Mr Shoigu has played a key role in Russia's war with Ukraine. Russian government papers show Mr Putin wants Mr Shoigu to take over from Nikolai Patrushev on the powerful security council. It is not yet clear what Mr Patrushev's new post will be. Mr Shoigu has close links with President Putin, often taking him on fishing trips in his native Siberia. He was given the defence portfolio despite having no military background, which rankled with some of his top brass. A civil engineer by profession, Mr Shoigu rose to prominence as the head of the emergencies and disaster relief ministry in the 1990s. He often looked out of his depth as defence minister, especially after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago, BBC Europe analyst Danny Aeberhard In 2023, Mr Shoigu became embroiled in a public feud with Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin over Russia's conduct of the war. Prigozhin, who led a short-lived mutiny against Moscow, accused Mr Shoigu of being a "dirtbag" and "elderly clown" in audio messages that went viral. The mercenary chief died in a plane crash while flying from St Petersburg to Moscow in August 2023. The Kremlin denied it was to blame. Mr Shoigu's suggested replacement, Mr Belousov, is an economist with little military experience and will come as a surprise to some. But in the view of other analysts, the move indicates that President Putin is seeking to align the Russian economy more closely with the war effort. Kremlin press spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the proposed appointment of a civilian showed the role of defence minister called for "innovation". He said Russia was becoming more like the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s, when a high proportion of GDP went on military spending. As a result, it was necessary to make sure that military expenditure was better integrated into Russia's overall economy, he added. "The one who is more open to innovations is the one who will be victorious on the battlefield," he said. BBC Russia editor Steve Rosenberg said the replacement of Mr Shoigu did not come as a surprise, since his position had become weaker and there had been talk for some time that he could lose his job. Russia's campaign in Ukraine has been plagued by military setbacks and big losses in men and materiel. Having an economist as defence minister reflects the changing priorities of the Kremlin, Steve Rosenberg says. The Russian economy is on a war footing now, so it is vital that the defence ministry has enough money to fund the war. Who's in Putin's inner circle and running the war? According to unnamed government officials quoted by independent Russian website The Bell, Mr Belousov is seen as a "hard-line defender of the state, who believes that Russia is encircled by enemies". Like President Putin, he is close to the Russian Orthodox Church. He is said to be a martial arts enthusiast - as is President Putin - who practised karate and the Russian combat sport sambo in his youth. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-69000698
