  6. British tech magnate Mike Lynch has appeared in court in the US to rebut claims that he committed fraud to inflate the value of his company ahead of its sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. He told the jury that he was uninvolved with the transactions that had been described in the trial, reportedly describing watching the proceedings as "surreal". Mr Lynch co-founded the software firm Autonomy in 1996, which grew to be one of the UK's biggest companies. An entrepreneur who once drew comparisons to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, he now faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors in San Francisco have spent weeks questioning witnesses, aiming to convince the jury of their case. They claim that Mr Lynch was the "driving force" behind a scheme, using back-dated contracts and other manoeuvres to inflate the value of the firm, which ultimately sold for more than $11bn (£8.6bn). At the time, the deal ranked as the largest-ever takeover of a British technology business. Just a year later, HP wrote down the value of Autonomy by $8.8bn. HP claimed it had been duped into overpaying for the company, which was known for software that could extract useful information from "unstructured" sources such as phone calls, emails or video. Mr Lynch's team has argued that HP did not properly vet the deal. It has also worked to distance Mr Lynch from other executives, including its former chief financial office, who was already successfully prosecuted for fraud. Under questioning from his lawyer on Thursday, Mr Lynch said his focus at the firm was technology and marketing and he left others in charge of the numbers. He made the case that business was complex, saying: "If you take a microscope to a spotless kitchen you’ll find bacteria." Mr Lynch, a former UK government adviser who sat on the boards of the BBC and the British Library, vigorously fought attempts to bring him to trial in the US. He was eventually extradited after a UK judge ruled in favour of HP in a similar civil fraud case in 2022. HP is seeking a reported $4bn in that case. As well as Mr Lynch, Autonomy's former finance executive Stephen Chamberlain is also on trial. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4nn2pyyjrgo
  7. The average age of vehicles on American roads continues to trend upward, according to a new report by S&P Global Mobility. The combined average age of all light-duty vehicles is up to 12.6 years in 2024, up by two months compared to 2023. The average age of passenger cars continues to trend higher at 14 years compared with light trucks at 11.9 years. The average age of vehicles in use on American roads has continued to trend upward at a pretty steady pace for the past 10 years or so. Since COVID-19 first hit and new-car sales began to fall, that figure has only risen more and continued on the same path. According to a new report by S&P Global Mobility, the combined average age of passenger cars and light trucks has now reached a record high of 12.6 years. Passenger cars help increase the average age, measuring 14.0 years compared to 11.9 years for light trucks, according to S&P. The new combined average is up by two months compared to last year and shows steady growth since crossing the 12-year average in 2021. The rising age of registered vehicles follows early trends seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw new-car prices skyrocket, leading to a massive decline in sales. As of last month, the average transaction price on new vehicles was just over $45,000, according to J.D. Power. That figure is more than $2000 cheaper than the peak, reached in December 2022, but shows a stark difference compared to the $33,695 average price in April 2019. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60882953/average-age-us-cars-trucks-suvs-rises/

  9. It’s easy to understand why people confuse bison and buffalo. Both are large, horned, oxlike animals of the Bovidae family. There are two kinds of bison, the American bison and the European bison, and two forms of buffalo, water buffalo and Cape buffalo. However, it’s not difficult to distinguish between them, especially if you focus on the three H’s: home, hump, and horns. [Watch a video to learn more about the difference between buffalo and bison] Contrary to the song “Home on the Range,” buffalo do not roam in the American West. Instead, they are indigenous to South Asia (water buffalo) and Africa (Cape buffalo), while bison are found in North America and parts of Europe. Despite being a misnomer—one often attributed to confused explorers—buffalo remains commonly used when referring to American bison, thus adding to the confusion.Another major difference is the presence of a hump. Bison have one at the shoulders while buffalo don’t. The hump allows the bison’s head to function as a plow, sweeping away drifts of snow in the winter. The next telltale sign concerns the horns. Buffalo tend to have large horns—some have reached more than 6 feet (1.8 meters)—with very pronounced arcs. The horns of bison, however, are much shorter and sharper. And, if you want to throw a B into the mix, you can check for a beard. Bison are the hipsters of the two animals, sporting thick beards. Buffalo are beardless. https://www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-buffalo-and-bison
  10. Chelsea have drawn up an early shortlist of managerial options, which includes Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca and Brentford’s Thomas Frank. The Blues are in search of a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino after he left the club by mutual consent on Tuesday. Contact has been made with McKenna, 38 – who won promotion from the Championship with Ipswich Town this season – but there is competition from Brighton, who are looking to replace Roberto de Zerbi. Manchester United are also reportedly interested in McKenna, who would cost more than £4m in compensation. He is believed to be the frontrunner as Chelsea target a quick appointment but Maresca, 44, who led Leicester to the Championship title and was a coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, is an alternative option. Danish coach Frank, 50, is similarly under consideration for his work in getting Brentford to the Premier League and then consolidating their position in the top flight. It is understood that Chelsea also have a fourth 'mystery' contender on their shortlist. Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness had been tipped as an option but is now believed to be staying in Germany. The Chelsea players not with their countries meet up for pre-season on 4 July and will embark on a tour of the United States under new management, having finished sixth in the Premier League and reached the Carabao Cup final - which they lost to Liverpool - last season. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cgeewyypyljo
  11. Ohio's governor is pushing state lawmakers to avoid a partisan clash threatening to bar US President Joe Biden from the key swing state's presidential ballot in November. The state's top election official said earlier this week that Democrats are nominating their candidate too late to comply with Ohio's ballot access laws. Such conflicts have been quietly resolved in the past - but the Biden campaign may be forced to sue to get on the ballot. On Thursday, the governor said he was calling the Legislature to convene for a rare special session to pass a law allowing Mr Biden to appear on the ballot. Ohio requires political parties to officially confirm presidential and vice-presidential nominees to the elections chief 90 or more days before the general election. That means Mr Biden and Kamala Harris, his vice president, must be certified as the Democratic candidates by 7 August. Though Mr Biden has secured the votes necessary for the Democratic nomination, he will not be named formally as the party's candidate until the nominating convention. But the Democratic National Convention is from 19 to 22 August. "The conflict between the August 7, 2024 certification deadline and the date of your party's nominating convention is well established," Ohio elections chief, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, wrote in a Tuesday letter to Ohio Democratic Party leadership. "Unless your party plans to comply with the statutory deadline, I am duty-bound to instruct boards of elections to begin preparing ballots that do not include the Democratic Party's nominees for president and vice president of the United States," the Republican said. Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate, will not face the same issue. His party's national convention is 15 to 18 July, well in advance of the Ohio deadline. Governor Mike DeWine, a moderate Republican who has distanced himself from the party's Trump-friendly wing, on Thursday said he was recalling state lawmakers to fix the "ridiculous... absurd situation". “Ohio is running out of time to get Joe Biden, the sitting President of the United States, on the ballot this fall," he told reporters. "Failing to do so is simply unacceptable." Party conventions, both Democrat and Republican, typically are held in the summer before a presidential contest - and similar issues with certification deadlines are rectified with little drama. Earlier this year, Democrats in Washington state and Republicans in Alabama made provisional changes necessary to exempt Mr Biden from ballot deadlines. Ohio itself has done the same in the past, with its Legislature making exceptions for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, and Mr Trump in 2020. But the state's Republican House speaker said the body would not make a legislative fix to the issue. "There's just not the will do that from the Legislature," Speaker Jason Stephens told reporters on Tuesday. The Biden campaign is continuing to express confidence the issue will be resolved without drama. “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states,” Charles Lutvak, a campaign spokesperson, told US media. “Election after election, states across the country have acted in line with the bipartisan consensus and taken the necessary steps to ensure the presidential nominees from both parties will be on the ballot.” But with a legislative remedy by state Republicans off the table, the sitting US president may have to seek legal action. Ohio, once viewed as a swing state, has become increasingly conservative. Mr Trump won Ohio in both 2016 and 2020, defeating Hillary Clinton and Mr Biden by roughly 8% margins both times. The fight over Ohio's ballot comes after another partisan clash earlier this year - one that threatened Mr Trump's ballot appearance. Officials in Colorado, Illinois and Maine ruled that the Republican was barred from returning to the White House under a Civil War-era insurrection clause in the US Constitution. The US Supreme Court ultimately knocked down that decision in March, ruling that Mr Trump must be placed on the three states' presidential ballots. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1rrqj7ypzlo
