A father has started legal action against UK oil giant BP over the death of his 21-year-old son. Hussein Julood alleges the burning off of gas at a BP-run oil field in Iraq - a practise known as flaring - caused his son Ali's leukaemia. A BBC investigation in 2022 found Ali's village, which lies within the field, had high levels of cancer-causing pollutants known to come from flaring. BP said "we understand the concerns" and are supporting change. The case is believed to be the first time an individual has started legal action against a major oil firm over its flaring practices. The claim letter - which has been seen by BBC News - alleges that Ali's leukaemia and subsequent death was caused by "toxic emissions from the Rumaila oilfield", and that BP is partly responsible as the lead contractor. Mr Julood is seeking compensation for the cost of his son's medical treatment - including overseas chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants - loss of earnings, funeral costs, as well as the "moral loss" of his son. "I am just hoping for those who hear my voice, from BP, to consider my situation. I am not representing myself alone, I am also representing those poor people living here and suffering from pollution," Hussein Julood told BBC News. Wessen Jazrawi, partner at Hausfeld & Co, which is representing Mr Julood, said: "This is an important example of environmental litigation seeking compensation for harmful emissions from a carbon major. Such companies have generally been able to carry out harmful environmental practices with impunity, particularly where these occur in the Global South." Gas flaring is the burning of gas released in oil extraction; it is dangerous for human health as the gas can contain a mixture of harmful cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene. Rumaila oil field has the highest documented levels of flaring in the world, according to BBC analysis of World Bank figures. Hussein Julood said one of the most crucial goals of his claim was that regular flaring should be stopped in Rumaila so that more families did not suffer. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68829899

Inter Milan sealed their 20th Italian title by beating arch-rivals and nearest challengers AC Milan in a historic Derby della Madonnina. Francesco Acerbi was unmarked to head in Benjamin Pavard's flick-on from a corner to give Inter the lead. Marcus Thuram latched onto a long ball and was given too much time to cut in before smashing their second into the bottom corner at the San Siro. England's Fikayo Tomori headed in from close range to give Milan brief hope. There were three red cards in injury time as tempers boiled over. Milan's Theo Hernandez and Inter's Denzel Dumfries were sent off for their part in a brawl and the hosts ended with nine men as captain Davide Calabria was sent off for violent conduct. Inter players and coaches ran on to the pitch to celebrate at the final whistle at the ground both sides share, although Milan were the home side for this fixture. The second-placed Rossoneri are now 17 points behind Inter with five games to go. Inter could have won by more with Lautaro Martinez missing a sitter and Hakan Calhanoglu's drive being tipped over by Mike Maignan. This was the first time the Serie A title has ever been won in the 116 years of the Milan derby. "I feel like crying because we worked so hard, we deserve this joy," said captain Martinez, who has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season. "It's been wonderful but we have to keep going because we've already won a lot of trophies and we want to win many more." Inter Milan's 20th Italian crown takes them above AC Milan's 19 Serie A titles and only below Juventus. But this was only their second title since 2010, last winning under Antonio Conte in 2021. Simone Inzaghi has brought the good times back to the Nerazzurri, cruising to the Scudetto with five games to spare on the back of a 27-game unbeaten run in the league. They have scored 79 goals, 15 clear of anybody else, and conceded only 18, eight fewer than any other side. Inter have now won the last six derbies, equalling the record runs of Milan from 1911-1913 and 1946-1948. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68873309

Animals in a Ugandan forest have been eating bat poo laden with viruses after tobacco farming wiped out their usual food source, a study has found. A virus linked to Covid-19 was among the 27 identified in the poo eaten by chimpanzees, antelopes and monkeys. Researchers say this finding sheds light on how new viruses might spread from wildlife to humans. The animals were monitored in a study by the University of Stirling and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The six-year project was prompted when Dr Pawel Fedurek from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Scotland's University of Stirling observed wild chimpanzees in Budongo forest eating accumulated bat excrement, known as guano, from the hollow of a tree. In July 2017, he set up cameras which captured other species also eating the poo. According to the peer-reviewed study, which features in the Nature journal, guano is an "alternative source of crucial minerals" for the animals after the the palm trees they once consumed were "harvested to extinction". The trees were used by locals in Budongo to dry tobacco leaves, which were then sold to international companies. For just over six months, researchers collected samples of guano from the tree hollow the animals were filmed eating from. How healthcare is helping regrow Madagascar's rainforest The newlyweds who set up a chimpanzee sanctuary in Sierra Leone In Congo, the 'lungs of humanity' are under threat Lab analysis of the poo identified several viruses, including one related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic. "It remains unknown whether the betacoronavirus found in the guano is transmissible to humans, but it does offer an example of how new infections might jump species barriers," a press release from the University of Stirling said. "About a quarter the 27 viruses we identified were viruses of mammals - the rest were viruses of insects and other invertebrates," Prof Tony Goldberg, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the US, told the BBC. "All 27 viruses were new to science, so we don't know what effects they might have on humans or other animals. But one virus stood out because is was a relative of a virus everyone knows: SARS coronavirus 2." Dr Pawel Fedurek, an expert in animal behaviour at the University of Stirling, said: "Our research illustrates how a subtle form of selective deforestation, ultimately driven by a global demand for tobacco, can expose wildlife and, by extension, humans to viruses residing in bat guano, increasing virus spillover risk. "Studies like ours shed light on the triggers and pathways of both wildlife-to-wildlife and wildlife-to-human virus transmission, ultimately improving our abilities to prevent outbreaks and pandemics in the future." The researchers hope their findings make it possible to intervene in the transmission of viruses between species and ultimately help to prevent future pandemics. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-68875094

Kia released an official photo of the upcoming Tasman pickup truck. The truck is shrouded in colorful camouflage, but we can still get a good look at its shape. The Tasman is launching in 2025 in select global markets, but we still don't know if it's coming to the U.S. or not. If you haven't heard already, Kia is launching a new pickup truck, and this is the first official image we have of the upcoming Tasman. While videos and other images circulating on social media showed the truck from various angles, Kia released this photo of the Tasman covered in a colorful camouflage wrap, and it's the best look yet at this global model set to launch in certain markets in 2025. While the distracting design obscures many of the details, we can see the Tasman's overall crew-cab shape and its interesting-looking headlights that appear similar to the units on the Telluride and EV9 SUVs. We can also see that it has all-terrain tires, suggesting it will be intended for off-roading to some degree. Kia reiterated that the Tasman will first launch in Korea, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East, and the wrap—designed by artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop, who is from Australia and New Zealand—is meant to emphasize its "Australian-inspired" character. Its name, taken from the Australian island Tasmania, also fits this vibe. We still don't have any details on the Tasman's underpinnings or powertrains, or even whether or not it will eventually make its way to the U.S. A prototype was recently caught testing in California, suggesting the distinct possibility of it being sold Stateside. Despite being raised on a steady diet of base-model Hondas and Toyotas—or perhaps because of it—Joey Capparella nonetheless cultivated an obsession for the automotive industry throughout his childhood in Nashville, Tennessee. He found a way to write about cars for the school newspaper during his college years at Rice University, which eventually led him to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for his first professional auto-writing gig at Automobile Magazine. He has been part of the Car and Driver team since 2016 and now lives in New York City. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60573379/kia-tasman-pickup-camouflaged/

Protests against the war in Gaza have spread from Columbia and Yale to other universities as officials scramble to diffuse a burgeoning protest movement. On Monday night, police moved to break up a protest at New York University and made a number of arrests. Dozens of students were arrested at Yale earlier in the day while Columbia cancelled in-person classes. Similar "encampments" have sprung up at Berkeley, MIT and other colleges across the country. Demonstrations and heated debates about the Israel-Gaza war and free speech have rocked US campuses since the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October. About 1,200 Israelis and foreigners - mostly civilians - were killed and 253 others were taken back to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded by launching its most intense ever war in Gaza with the aims of destroying Hamas and freeing the hostages. More than 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza - most of them children and women - have been killed in the conflict, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry says. In the US, students on both sides say there has been a rise in both antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents. When asked about the campus protests on Monday, President Joe Biden said he condemned "the antisemitic protests" as well as "those who don't understand what's going on with the Palestinians". The campus protest movement was thrust into the global spotlight last week after New York City police were called out to Columbia University's campus in the city and arrested dozens of demonstrators. In a statement on Monday, Columbia announced that all classes would be held virtually, with Columbia President Minouche Shafik citing incidents of "intimidating and harassing behaviour". Dr Shafik said tensions on campus had been "exploited and amplified by individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia who have come to campus to pursue their own agendas". At New York University, protesters set up tents across from the Stern School of Business. As was the case in some of the other universities, the NYU protesters are calling on the school to disclose and divest its "finances and endowments from weapons manufacturers and companies with an interest in the Israeli occupation". As night fell on Monday, police began arresting protesters there. Hours before, nearly 50 protesters were arrested at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where demonstrations had swelled to several hundred people over the weekend. The university said those taken into custody had ignored "multiple requests" to leave. Protest encampments have also been established at the University of California at Berkeley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, Emerson College and Tufts. The campus protests, however, have been marred by accusations of antisemitism. In one example, videos posted online appeared to show some protesters near Columbia expressing support for the Hamas attack on Israel. Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Manning, who toured Columbia on Monday, said she had seen protesters there calling for Israel's destruction. And the Hasidic group Chabad at Columbia University said Jewish students had been screamed at and subjected to harmful rhetoric. A rabbi affiliated with the university also reportedly sent a message to 300 Jewish Columbia students, warning them to avoid campus until the situation "dramatically improves". Members of the protest groups have denied antisemitism, arguing that their criticism is reserved for the Israeli state and its supporters. In a statement on Sunday, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine said they "firmly reject any form of hate or bigotry" and criticised "inflammatory individuals who do not represent us". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68873825
