President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter deepened an entanglement of politics and the rule of law that has tarnished faith in American justice and is almost certain to worsen in Donald Trump’s second term. The Sunday evening move was a stunning development since Biden came to office vowing to restore the independence of the Justice Department, which had been eroded during Trump’s first term, and because he had repeatedly said he wouldn’t pardon his son. Now, weeks before he leaves the White House, Biden has wielded presidential power to absolve his son ahead of sentencings later this month over a pair of gun and tax convictions that emerged from the due process of law. His decision came days after special counsel Jack Smith moved to dismiss the federal cases against Trump — over election interference and the hoarding of classified documents — on the grounds that presidents can’t be prosecuted. Taken together, the convergence of legal controversies raises questions about the bedrock notion that underpins the system of justice in the United States that everyone — even presidents and their families — are equal before the law. Until Sunday, Biden had not intervened in the cases against his son, and the White House always insisted that he wouldn’t, even though the shifting political environment caused by Trump’s election victory last month seemed likely to shift his calculations. Biden started informing staff of his decision on Saturday evening, a source familiar with the matter told CNN’s Arlette Saenz, and his team regrouped on Sunday morning to iron out the details. Massive political reverberations Politically, Biden’s reversal may be seen as a stain on his legacy and his credibility. It contributes to an ignominious end for a presidency that dissolved in his disastrous debate performance in June and that will now be remembered as much for opening the way for Trump’s return to the White House as evicting him four years ago. Rep. Glenn Ivey, a Maryland Democrat, acknowledged to Kasie Hunt on “CNN This Morning” Monday that the pardon will be wielded politically against Democrats. “I’ve got mixed views about it, frankly,” Ivey said. The president also may have offered an opening for Trump’s party to rally behind Kash Patel, the loyalist whom the president-elect picked Saturday evening to lead the FBI and serve as an apparent agent of his campaign of political retribution. There is no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the president. An impeachment inquiry by House Republicans that looked at Biden’s and his son’s business relationships — which Democrats saw as an attempt to inflict political damage ahead of the election — went nowhere. And the cases against Hunter Biden lack the constitutional gravity or historic importance of the indictments against Trump and his frequent attacks on the rule of law.But the political impact of Sunday night’s drama could be profound. Already, Republicans are arguing the Hunter Biden pardon shows that the current president, and not the next one, is most to blame for politicizing the system of justice by meting out favorable treatment to his son. Their claim may not be accurate, but it can still be politically effective. Trump used pardons to protect multiple political aides and contacts during his first term, including his daughter’s father-in-law, who’s now his pick for ambassador to France. But any time in the future that Trump is criticized for his use of pardon power, he will be able to argue that Biden did the same to protect his own kin. This could be especially significant as Trump comes under pressure from supporters in the coming months to pardon those convicted of crimes related to the January 6, 2021, mob attack on the US Capitol — many of whom are still in jail. Yet Biden, after a life of tragedies and heartache, asked Americans to judge him as a father who was clearly worried about the impact of a potential jail term on his son, a recovering addict. Trump and Biden now both argue that the Justice Department was politicized Hunter Biden was convicted by a jury in June of illegally buying and possessing a gun after a trial that exposed his drug abuse and family dysfunction. He pleaded guilty in September to nine tax offenses, stemming from $1.4 million in taxes that he didn’t pay while spending lavishly on escorts, strippers, cars and drugs. There is some validity to the president’s claim in his Sunday statement that his son was “treated differently” because of who his father is. Charges relating to the illegal possession of a firearm while being addicted to a controlled substance and regarding a false statement on the matter are quite rare, for instance. And Republican congressional probes into the matter, which imploded over a lack of evidence, looked like naked attempts to damage the president. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/12/02/politics/hunter-biden-pardon-analysis/index.html

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has resigned effective immediately. An executive committee will run the company before selecting a new CEO in the first half of 2025. The move is a departure from Tavares' previous announcement that he would retire when his contract expires in 2o26. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares resigned effective immediately on Sunday, according to a new report from Reuters. The company announced it is searching for a new CEO and hopes to complete the search in the first half of 2025. An interim executive committee will run the company until a new CEO is chosen. Stellantis Chairman John Elkann will reportedly head the committee. Senior Independent Director Henri de Castries said in an official statement from the company that a difference in opinions between major shareholders, the board, and Tavares came to a head in recent weeks, resulting in the CEO submitting his resignation The abrupt departure comes two months after Tavares announced he would leave the company when his contract expires in 2026. Tavares served as the first CEO of the automotive conglomerate, having stepped in to fill the role following the 2021 merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA. Prior to his role at Stellantis, Tavares headed Groupe PSA where he made sweeping changes such as the purchase of Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors in 2017. The change is being made as Stellantis continues to struggle with global sales. Sales were down 17 percent across the company's six brands through the third quarter of 2024. As something of a last-ditch effort, Tavares previously suggested the brand could kill off brands in North America such as Alfa Romeo or Fiat, which have sales figures demonstrably smaller than the conglomerate's larger brands. The idea appears to be unpo[CENSORED]r on the company's board, according to Reuters, as a source familiar with the situation said that tensions on the board grew when members felt Tavares was moving too quickly and focusing on near-term solutions to save his reputation rather than focusing on the long-term health of the company. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a63068400/stellantis-ceo-carlos-tavares-resigns/

A few simple steps to improve your relationships can help make sure you are the kind of friend you would wish to have yourself. Human beings are notoriously inept at recognising our failings. We may complain about another person's arrogance, ignorance or stupidity, without ever considering the enormous flaws that they may find in our characters. This blind spot will be evident in each of our friendships. Without ever meaning to do harm, our thoughtless actions hurt the people we love best. I'm talking about casual cruelty rather than deliberate unkindness – but the consequences of these slip-ups are damaging. While writing my recent book on the science of social connection, I discovered that "ambivalent relationships" – people who blow both hot and cold – can cause even more harm to wellbeing than purely spiteful figures who are predictably unpleasant. Fortunately, research findings can help us develop simple-yet-powerful strategies to identify our worst habits and mitigate their damage. Here are my five favourite lessons to avoid being an accidental frenemy. Be consistent No one likes to be kept in a state of uncertainty – a fact that can be seen in people's responses to physical pain. Archy de Berker at the UCL Institute of Neurology in the UK, and his colleagues, asked people to play a computer game that delivered a mild electric shock whenever they found a snake hiding under a virtual rock. To examine the effects of uncertainty on the stress response, the researchers varied how likely it would be that a rock would be hiding a snake across the course of the experiment, and measured the physiological signs of anxiety – such as sweat and pupil dilation. Quite surprisingly, the participants tended to show a more pronounced stress response when there was only a 50% chance of being shocked, compared with scenarios when they knew for certain that the pain was coming. Fairweather behaviour may put the people around us in a similar state of anticipation. In studies investigating unpredictable friendships, scientists ask participants to imagine going to a friend for advice, understanding or a favour. They ask them to respond to the following questions, on a scale of one (not at all) to six (extremely): • How helpful is your connection? • How upsetting is your connection? Anyone who elicits two or more on both questions is considered an "ambivalent connection" – and the inherent doubt about their reaction can be a serious source of stress. In one study, simply knowing that their ambivalent friends were sitting in the next room was enough to raise participants' blood pressure. We may not always be able to provide the support our friends need, but we can try to be a little more reliable in our responses. We might learn to manage our bad moods better, for example, so that we do not lash out if our friends approach us at the wrong moment – rather than placing them at the whim of our emotional weather. Avoid the illusion of transparency Each of us is trapped in our own minds, but we overestimate how well others can read our emotional state – a phenomenon that is sometimes known as the illusion of transparency. This may be evident at job interviews: we assume that our nerves are written all over our face – but the anxious feelings are often far more difficult to discern than we realise. This common cognitive error may also prevent us from sharing our appreciation of others, giving them the impression that they are neglected and undervalued. Amit Kumar, at the University of Texas at Austin, and Nicholas Epley, at the University of Chicago, asked groups of participants to write letters of gratitude to important people in their lives. Using surveys to measure the letter writers' expectations and the recipients' actual reactions, the researchers found that people consistently underestimated how surprised the other person would be to receive their kind words, and how good it would make them feel. They assumed that the other person already knew how grateful they were. It is, of course, possible that our body language will convey our warmth and appreciation to others, but we can't rely on that fact – meaning that we would often do far better to express those feelings in words. Validate others' feelings (but nudge them to consider new perspectives) When someone is going through a hard time, they will often naturally seek understanding from others. An empathetic response can validate their feelings, which eases some of their stress. A toxic friend may be highly dismissive or judgemental about your feelings – resulting in a sense of rejection that only adds to the person's emotional burden. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20241129-how-to-avoid-being-a-toxic-friend

Arthroleptis variabilis is a species of frog in the family Arthroleptidae. It is found in the lowlands of eastern Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea (including the island of Bioko), Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Earlier records west from Nigeria refer to other species, including Arthroleptis krokosua described in 2008. Common names Buea screeching frog and variable squeaker frog have been coined for it.Arthroleptis variabilis is a robust frog with moderately robust limbs. Males measure 26–35 mm (1.0–1.4 in) and females 29–38 mm (1.1–1.5 in) in snout–vent length. The head is somewhat broad. The tympanum is distinct and ovoid. The fingers and toes do not have webbing but there is a very prominent, flange-like inner metatarsal tubercle. Skin is smooth but tending towards glandular posteriorly and is glandular laterally. Coloration is variable. Dorsal base coloration is black, dark gray, brown (dark, light, or ruddy), red, or olive green. Markings on dorsal and lateral surfaces range from tan, orange, light or dark brown to black, When present, mid-vertebral stripe is gray to orange. Anna Howells, content creator for Spurs XY and long-suffering Tottenham fan, bristles at the term 'Spursy' being used about her team - but admits it is an apt description. "Yes, not a fun word but an accurate one," she tells BBC Sport. "We have been incredibly inconsistent. Somehow both really good and really bad." 'Spursy' has become shorthand to describe Tottenham's wildly inconsistent form, an ability to snatch draws or defeats from the jaws of victory, and put their supporters through the wringer. Last week was one of the most Spursy of all - a thumping 4-0 victory at champions Manchester City, followed by conceding a last-gasp equaliser against Roma, and culminating in a deeply frustrating 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Fulham. All that came amid worries about injuries and fitness of key players, the quality of their replacements, and an ongoing existential crisis about balancing the innate Tottenham identity of attacking football with being able to see out tricky games. The debate between idealism and pragmatism is one on which fans differ. "Following Spurs this season has been a tonne of fun - that was the narrative in the WhatsApp groups after Roma," Chris Paouros, co-chair of Proud Lilywhites, tells BBC Sport. "We've spent a lot of time saying we want our Tottenham back. We have it back. This type of football is our identity. "Ange Postecoglou is the man - his football is irresistible. We are the league's entertainers. I'm happy with that." That insistence on entertainment shows in the stats. Spurs are the Premier League's top scorers, with 28 goals from 13 games - yet they sit seventh in the table, with six wins and five defeats. The Roma match was Postecoglou’s Spurs in a nutshell - taking 24 shots to Roma's 18, putting together some brilliant attacking play but unable to see out the win as Mats Hummels equalised in injury time for a 2-2 draw. Following the thrashing of City with a draw against mid-table opponents Fulham, who played the final 15 minutes with 10 men after Tom Cairney's red card, is also typical. No wonder some supporters are irritated. "Frustrating mainly," Alison Speechly, Spurs fan writer for BBC Sport, said when asked to sum up the fan experience this season. "We keep getting glimpses of greatness. "Angeball is risk and reward, and we are seeing that - rewards at times, but also risk of performances like against Ipswich and Crystal Palace [sides in the bottom four who have beaten Spurs this season]. "In football you can plan, but you also need to react. Sometimes your plan might not always work, and you need to be able to adapt. There has to be some flex in there. They say to the media: 'We take every game seriously.' But do you?" Her frustration comes from Postecoglou's commitment to attacking football at all times. Goals are usually not difficult to come by - in all competitions, they have 14 different scorers this season, Brennan Johnson the leader with 10. A star-studded forward line includes several players - including Johnson, Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski - capable of playing in multiple attacking roles. It can be greatly entertaining, but also explains why Spurs have strung together three successive wins in all competitions just once in 2024. "It has been frustrating," says Howells. "The highs are really good. When things click, we are unstoppable like against City. "Equally, when it's bad, it's schoolboy errors, unable to pass to each other. I would trade highs for consistency, a middle ground. "Against Roma, we should have seen out the 2-1 but we didn't come out for the second half. We need to be fully switched on. But it's in our DNA to be forward thinking." There are concerns among supporters that there is a psychological issue among Tottenham players, for them to be so impressive against the reigning champions only to fail to win their following two games. Spurs have not won back-to-back league games since the end of September. "The shift in mentality has to happen among players," says Paouros. "You feel like you are entitled to win against Brighton and Ipswich, but no-one is entitled to anything. No-one wins every match." Speechly, however, thinks the issue lies with the coach. "I've been battling with thoughts on Ange. When he came in, I was fully on board and he had an amazing start. This season I have become frustrated with his stubbornness. "But there is no point being frustrated with his tactical approach, as he has made clear that is how he will play, that is wasted energy." Ultimately, Spurs fans will hold out hope that Angeball can produce success this season. Spurs are still in all three cups, and are in touch with the Premier League top four. Postecoglou has spoken about how he always wins a trophy in his second season - fans now must hope that comes true in north London. "This stuff takes a lot of time, to get used to running and pressing in this way, only playing out from the back," says Paouros. "Look at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp had to put everything in place - in the first two seasons they finished outside the top four." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c4gxgplmk55o

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier faces a vote of no confidence in his minority government after using special powers to push through a social security budget bill without a vote by MPs. The government is unlikely to survive the vote, which was triggered this afternoon by the radical left France Unbowed (LFI) opposition party and Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN). It is likely to take place on Wednesday. Despite last-minute concessions, Barnier clearly did not think he would be able to get his budget bill over the line. The New Po[CENSORED]r Front, an alliance of several left-wing parties, came out top against Macron's supporters and the far right following early elections in July. The alliance was left furious by Macron's decision to veer to the centre right by picking Barnier as his new prime minister, and promised to vote against the government. This has meant that Barnier has until now had to rely on the RN for his government's survival. The budget bill sought to rein in France's spiralling deficit through €60bn (£49bn) in tax rises and spending cuts. Because he lacked a majority, Barnier was forced to make concessions to critics. These included scrapping a previously planned hike in electricity tax, as well as plans for a less generous prescription drug reimbursement policy from next year. But the new version of the social security budget remained unacceptable to the opposition. He used article 49.3 of the French constitution, which allows the text of a bill to be passed without a vote, to push through his 2025 budget after the RN joined the left in opposing it. "I don't think French people will forgive us for choosing party interests over the future of the country," Barnier told MPs on Tuesday as he explained the reasons for his decision. "Now, everybody will need to assume their own responsibility as I have assumed mine." Marine Le Pen explained the RN position prior to the motion being tabled. "Barnier didn't listen to the 11 million voters of the RN... He said everyone should assume their own responsibility, and that's what we will do," she said. Barnier has warned of the financial and political effects of unseating him, but Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI, said on Monday that "there will not be chaos once Mr Barnier and his government have gone". "We are now experiencing political chaos as a result of both Mr Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency." Barnier was invited to form a government by President Emmanuel Macron in September. RN lawmakers and the left combined have enough votes to topple Barnier. If Barnier doesn't survive Wednesday's vote, he will remain in place as a caretaker prime minister until Macron announces a new government. That could be a new majority government - unlikely given the splintering of the French parliament - or a technocratic government, to steer the country until new elections can be held next summer. The process could take weeks, as it did after a snap general election delivered a hung parliament in summer. Several parties are also clamouring for new presidential elections. As it stands, Macron is due to stay in post until 2027. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn8g7zp0q79o

Once Human's mobile beta test is right around the corner, starting November 28th It's first-come, first-served but will feature on both iOS and Android, including cross-play Once Human is set in a bizarre world overtaken by supernatural phenomena Well, despite being a good while down the line we finally have more news about the mobile version of Once Human, NetEase's mix of supernatural horror and survivalist open-world shooter. The mobile closed beta is slated to start on the 28th of November, tomorrow as of the time of writing, and will be available for iOS and Android. Set in a world wracked by supernatural events, Once Human sees you trying to survive and explore while dealing with hazards both usual and unusual. Access to the mobile closed beta of Once Human will be first-come, first-served however, so that means you'll want to keep a close eye on the official website and snap up the download client. It's finally here, I was genuinely surprised that NetEase weren't pushing the mobile version of Once Human out the door, but now that it's almost here I can safely say this is definitely shaping up to be an interesting release. Clearly, it's been in the oven for a while too, what with both an Android and iOS beta, alongside crossplay. Although whether or not that large-scale rollout equates to a corresponding amount of polish, I reckon, we'll have to wait and see. Here's hoping all that time on PC has paid off in terms of technical prowess. Speaking of hotly-anticipated mobile releases though, what about Destiny: Rising, eh? If you want to see what all the hubbub is about and get our unedited thoughts, be sure to check in on Will Quick's Destiny: Rising first impressions article for more info! https://www.pocketgamer.com/once-human/mobile-closed-beta-test/

PUBG Mobile's newest update is here with the frost version 3.5 Explore the new realm of Frostheim in the Icemire Frontier mode Take on the Frostborne Dragon, wield new weapons, and explore additional editing tools in World of Wonder PUBG Mobile, Krafton's hit battle royale, is getting a major winter makeover. With the release of version 3.5, you can jump into a brand new frozen battleground in latest seasonal mode, Icemire Frontier (available until the 7th of January). That's alongside weapon and vehicle updates, and fresh additions to World of Wonder mode! So, to start, what is Icemire Frontier? Well, in keeping with previous overhauls, Icemire Frontier will see you explore a brand new area of the map in the form of chilly, snowbound Frostheim, on either Erangel, Livik, or Vikendi. Explore Magic Crystal Mines or ply for treasure in the Dragon's Lair (only on Erangel). Take on the Frostborne Dragon alone, or preferably with friends, but don't worry because dying at its hands won't count as an elimination. Next up, you can help support your teammates with the new M79 Smoke Grenade Launcher and lay down an obscuring field of smoke, or go loud and fast with the addition of the Mammoth and Sabertooth Tiger vehicles. Speaking of teamwork, Metro Royale now lets you extract with your teammates loot, ensuring you can let your downed allies keep their gear if you can make it out. As for World of Wonder, a major new addition sees the introduction of breakable interactization to make new and more complex creations. Editing tools have also been given an overhaul for a hopefully smoother experience, and you can now decorate your home with new Northern-themed items, and some advanced furniture that may have unique appearances when merging. If you're looking to mix up your run 'n gun experience this winter, don't feel you need to stick with PUBG Mobile. Why not try out some of the entries in our ranking of the top 15 best shooters for iOS and iPad instead? https://www.pocketgamer.com/pubg-mobile/icemire-frontier-mode/
