  3. Yesterday Romanian tech review site Lab 501 put up one of the world's first reviews of Intel's new mobile Core i9-12900HK (Alder Lake) processor. Packing Intel's all-new hybrid core microarchitecture, the CPU has managed to beat AMD's desktop Ryzen Threadripper 1950X in Cinebench R20. The Core i9-12900HK will be Intel's new flagship mobile part for the 12th Generation Core series. With specs including six P-cores and eight E-cores, 24MB of L3 cache, and a maximum frequency of 5 GHz, it's a serious upgrade from Intel's 11th Generation mobile parts on paper. In practice, the chip performs every bit and what the specs say. Thanks to the extra core count of the E-cores, and the enhanced IPC of the Golden Cove cores, the Core i9-12900HK puts up an impressive Cinebench R20 score of 6,741 points -- higher than any mobile CPU we've seen to date and equal to that of Intel's desktop Core i5-12600K. For reference, Intel's previous mobile flagship, the Core i9-11980HK, is nearly 1,000 points behind the new Alder Lake part, with a score of 5,772 points. Even further back is one of AMD's top-tier mobile processors, the Ryzen 9 5900HX, with a score of 5,229 points. But most impressively, the Core i9-12900HK is the first mobile CPU to out-right beat Cinebench R20's reference Ryzen Threadripper 1950X score of 6,670 points (which you can find by installing the app for yourself). An impressive result, considering the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is a 180W behemoth with 16 core Zen cores designed for desktops.
  4. here is a pleasing circularity to the recent career of Pip White, who in November took on the role of SVP & General Manager EMEA at collaboration software company Slack. Previously, White had spent a number of years running the sales operation at CRM titan Salesforce, before departing for a job at Google’s cloud arm. In the summer of 2021, Salesforce finalized an acquisition of Slack worth $28 billion, and now White finds herself in familiar company. A few months into her new role, TechRadar Pro spoke to White about Slack’s ambitions for the coming year, with the pandemic continuing to confine many workers to their home offices. The official party line goes a little something like this: Slack is the only viable digital headquarters for the hybrid working era, wherein we will all work in a fluid and asynchronous manner from a variety of locations. It’s a message we’ve heard many times over by now. However, White also offered insight into the nature of the company’s relationship with its new parent organization, as well as the way it perceives its competition in the collaboration sector. Slackforce Asked why she traded in her position at Google Cloud for one at Slack, White explained that the acquisition by Salesforce played a large part, as did the platform’s role in the evolution of work. “The opportunity to lead Slack in EMEA was a compelling one, especially in the context of the integration into Salesforce and the doors that has opened from an existing customer and growth perspective,” she explained. “It was also about where we are in the world right now, in terms of the way people are thinking about different ways of working. Slack presents a really interesting opportunity at the forefront of that transformation.” Having rolled out Slack internally prior to the acquisition, Salesforce was already equipped with a “really good feel for the technology”, White told us. And in future, the new parent company will help guide product development, as well as pursuing opportunities relating to the integration of Slack and Salesforce products. Slack founder and CEO Stuart Butterfield now reports in to Bret Taylor, who was recently appointed co-CEO at Salesforce. White describes this relationship as a “tight connection and collaboration” from a product perspective. “It’s a case of collaboration, not of Salesforce taking over, or vice versa,” said White. “It’s about what’s in the best interests of our customers and how we can help them on this hybrid working journey.” “Slack will be central to minimizing disruption and accelerating the opportunity for collaboration in this new digital economy, and even more so as a result of the new use cases we’ve been exploring since the acquisition.” This may well prove to be the case, but Slack will first have to see off increasingly stiff competition from a number of directions. What competition? As a result of the pandemic and shift to remote working, the collaboration and video conferencing market has never been hotter, nor more competitive. According to a recent survey from Gartner, there has been a 44% rise in the use of collaboration tools since 2019. These kinds of services have also become increasingly amorphous over the last couple of years, as the largest players continue to borrow features and design concepts from one another. In a venn diagram that maps out functionality, platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack and others would overlap significantly. However, White doesn’t accept the notion that Slack can be easily compared with other services, nor that the platform faces serious competition. Asked specifically about the rivalry between Slack and Microsoft Teams, she told us: “it’s not necessarily an apples to apples comparison”. This felt a touch disingenuous, given the commonalities between the two services; both offer text chat, group channels, audio calls, file sharing and integrations with third-party apps. In our mind, someone could be forgiven for thinking Slack and Teams are fruit of much the same tree. In 2020, Slack also filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft over the bundling together of Teams and Office 365 services, which the company says amounts to an unfair advantage. Both White and Slack’s communications agency refused to be drawn into discussing the legal dispute, which is yet to be resolved, but its existence implies there is rivalry there. Nonetheless, White is ardent that Slack offers a unique value proposition, courtesy of its push towards asynchronous collaboration, short and spontaneous huddles in place of time-hungry meetings, and rich third-party integrations. “We will continue to innovate around these themes,” she told us. “All employers are thinking about how to approach cultural shifts and flux in the working environment; a lot of employees want different things.” “The situation is going to continue to evolve, so it’s about anticipating change and being supremely flexible. Technologies that allow for asynchronous working away from the physical office will enable that journey.” An automated future Regardless of whether Slack faces direct opposition from services like Teams, however, the company obviously has a clear vision for the future of its software. As announced in mid-November, Slack has “rebuilt and reengineered” large parts of the platform from the ground up. The main improvement is the introduction of a library of “building blocks” to the Slack Workflow Builder, which make it simpler to develop automations that eliminate the need to juggle many different business apps. Building these automations requires no coding whatsoever; the Lego-like blocks can be chained together via a simple drag-and-drop mechanism, which means workers don’t have to rely on overburdened developer teams to code-in new functionality. If there is no available building block that fulfils a particular task, a developer can step in to create one on an employee’s behalf. This new block will then become available across the organization and can be “remixed” into various other workflows. According to White, customers are beginning to utilize this and other new functionality to great effect, in ways that are not possible on any other platform. “We see the ability to bring work into channel as a key differentiator for us. The way in which most of our customers are starting to use Slack in anger, so to speak, is all about the ability to collaborate endlessly from one process to another,” she said. “We’re only beginning to see the start of changes to ways of working. A lot has changed in some sectors and digital transformation has undoubtedly been accelerated, but we’re still at the start of this journey. I think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to reconsider the ways in which we work.”

  7. ASRock has released new BIOS versions for its Intel 600-series platforms that enable support of Intel's upcoming Core i9-12900KS processor that will use a yet-unknown Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost technology to reach up to 5.5 GHz. The new BIOSes update the Intel microcode on most (if not all) Intel 600-series motherboards and therefore brings formal support of the forthcoming flagship CPU to high-end mainboards and cheap Intel H610 platforms. Apparently, to support Intel's Core i9-12900KS processor with an all-core turbo clock of 5.20 GHz and up to 5.50 GHz max turbo frequency, motherboard makers not only need to add a new CPU ID but also add support for Intel's Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost technology. This appears to be a yet another (sixth, to be more precise) adaptive boost level for the company's consumer chips. Intel yet has to disclose how exactly its Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost (ETVB) works. Still, it seems to be a superset of the company's regular Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) technology that increases core clocks when all cores are active, and the chip's temperature is below 70ºC. Perhaps, with ETVB, the clocks and voltages are increased at higher temperatures when cooling is sufficient, but that is just speculation. o far, ASRock has enabled support for Intel's Core i9-12900KS CPUs on its Z690 Taichi, Z690 Steel Legend Wi-Fi 6E, B660M-HDV, and H610M-HDV/M.2 motherboards, which belong to completely different market segments. The Z690 Taichi is one of the highest-end platforms on the market, and it's aimed at enthusiasts with deep pockets. By contrast, the H610M-HDV/M.2 motherboard is an entry-level product that will barely be used by owners of Intel's premium K-series motherboards, let alone the Core i9-12900KS, which is a limited special edition processor. Considering that entry-level motherboards typically do not feature expensive voltage regulating modules (VRMs) for CPUs, it's unlikely the new chip could operate on those lower-end motherboards. Rather, support for the feature is probably just included as part of ASRock's standard firmware framework, thus resulting in its addition even where it doesn't make sense.
  8. Organizations running old Java apps on their systems could end up having their networks targeted and infiltrated by a financially motivated threat group known as 'Elephant Beetle' or TG2003. The Incident Response (IR) team at the cybersecurity firm Sygnia has spent the past two years tracking Elephant Beetle as the group preyed on organizations in the finance and commerce sectors in Latin America according to a new blog post. Elephant Beetle is a sophisticated threat actor which wields an arsenal of over 80 unique tools and scripts in its attacks. To make matters worse, the group patiently executes its attacks over long periods of time by blending in with a target's environment and going completely undetected while stealing large amounts of money from unsuspecting organizations. Although Elephant Beetle appears to primarily focus on organizations in Latin America, that doesn't mean businesses based in other regions are safe. For instance, Sygnia's IR team discovered that the Latin American operations of a US-based company had been breached by the group which means both regional and global organizations should be on the lookout. Java-based attacks Elephant Beetle is highly proficient in Java-based attacks according to Sygnia and in many cases, it targets legacy Java applications running on Linux systems as a means of initial entry into an organization's environment. At the same time, the group even goes as far as deploy its own complete Java web application on victim machines to do its bidding while these machines also run legitimate applications. In the first phase of an attack which can last up to a month, Elephant Beetle focuses on building operational cyber capabilities in a compromised environment. During this time, the group studies the digital landscape of an organization's network and plants backdoors while also customizing its tools to work within the environment. From here, Elephant Beetle spends several months studying a victim's environment focusing on its financial operations and identifying any flaws. The group also observes a victim's software and infrastructure to understand the technical process of their legitimate financial transactions. Elephant Beetle then creates fraudulent transactions in the environment and although they may seem insignificant in terms of the amounts stolen, over time they can add up to millions of dollars. In addition to being patient, the group is also quick to retreat and lay low for a few months if any theft activity is discovered and blocked. Afterwards, Elephant Beetle returns several months later and targets a different system. We'll likely hear more about Elephant Beetle and its activities as Sygnia continues to monitor the group. Until then, organizations running Java applications on their systems should ensure their security protocols and software are up to date to avoid being targeted.
  9. Rabat – Students are demanding Moroccan schools to schedule exams online amid concerns over the safety of in-person exams due to an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases. Students from Lycee Descartes in Rabat reached out to Morocco World News, claiming that “the school saw an increase of COVID-19 cases, yet the administration remains blind on the matter.” Concerned students denounce violations of sanitary measures on their school campuses.“Although there are several people who were in contact with an infected person, the school asks them to attend classes,” one student said. MWN reached out to a representative of Lycee Descartes, who stressed that the school has a COVID-19 crisis unit that tracks the evolution of the COVID-19 situation in the school. The unit consists of representatives of the parents’ associations, staff members, and a medical team. Following a meeting of the COVID-19 crisis unit, personnel from the school administration confirmed to MWN that they have decided to suspend in-person classes starting from January 7 for high school and January 8 for middle school. Classes will be held online until January 17. “We abide by the law and the preventive measures of the authorities,” they said. This scenario repeats itself in other schools. In the National School of Commerce and Management, in both Tangier and Casablanca, some students said they are unable to perform their best in a high-risk environment. They called for the schools to cancel in-person exams. “Last year, the school allowed online classes, but now that there are many confirmed COVID cases, the school still insists to maintain in-person exams,” a student from ENCG Tangier told MWN, adding that “the school is competing at the expense of the students’ health.” An academic coordinator at ENCG Tangier spoke to MWN, noting that January 6 marked the first day of the exams period in the school. She emphasized, “everyone is wearing their masks and respecting social distancing rules.” “I understand that students prefer to take exams online, but the claims about the school recording many COVID cases are simply not true. We would not risk anyone’s life,” she added. To date, 22 positive COVID-19 cases were reported in ENCG Casablanca. Amid fears of further infections, students are demanding the school and the presidency of Hassan II University to follow the decision of the Higher Education Ministry and switch to remote exams. Read Also: COVID-19: Minister of Higher Education Urges Universities to Organize Remote Exams In a letter sent to Mohammed Talbi, President of Hassan II University, and Smail Kabbaj, Director of ENCG Casablanca, students stressed that “taking in-person exams with over 2,000 students represent a high risk since a significant number of students are infected and cannot be tested for several reasons, including that some COVID tests are not taken into account.” The statement clarifies that the test results of students taking rapid pharmacy tests were not taken into account, hence, the exact number of infections remains unknown. Following the recent increase of COVID-19 cases in the International University of Rabat (UIR), a student told MWN, “we as students are very fearful of our health and safety,” noting that exams are also taking place in-campus. Other UIR students affirmed to MWN that the school is taking the preventive measures seriously and a professor who tested positive was quarantined. Universities around the world are adapting to the threat of COVID-19 and enforcing efforts to minimize the transmission of the virus among students and staff members. Other issues, however, raise further difficulties. These issues include the novelty of online and in-person exams and the hybrid teaching modes previously absent in the Moroccan educational system.
