Spain’s central government has said that Morocco is "sovereign" to install drones with missiles near the borders of Melilla and Ceuta, according to Spanish outlet El Faro De Melilla. The statement came as a response to a written question from Carles Mulet, senator of the left-wing Compromis party in the Valencia region. The senator questioned the possibility of Morocco installing aircraft facilities with the ability to reach a target of 14 kilometers, a range that would span the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. The Spanish government reaffirmed respect for Morocco’s “sovereignty” to manage the surveillance of its borders with the means it deems appropriate. In its reaction, the government stressed its commitment to maintaining the greatest possible neighborly relations with Morocco, defining the North African country as a “strategic partner” while at the same time pledging to “protect Spain's interests.” Senator Mulet had previously highlighted his concerns about the ramifications of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) stationing drones near Ceuta and Melilla in October, noting that the two cities “are not under NATO's protection.” The Spanish outlet further explained that the Compromis party questions Morocco’s intentions in installing armed drones in the area. It noted that the deployment of drones with missiles is “for an attack, not surveillance.” The Compromis party claimed this is a provocation from Morocco, “which is dangerously rearming, as it already devotes 10 percent of its budget to defense,” the outlet reported. Last year, Spain-Morocco relations were rocked by an unprecedented diplomatic crisis, with significant bilateral tensions erupting as a result of Spain's decision to host the separatist Polisario Front's commander Brahim Ghali in April 2021. Spanish officials have repeatedly vowed to mend diplomatic relations with the North African country. But the new tensions looming on the horizon makes it unclear whether the recently established diplomatic rapprochement will be able to withstand disagreements over the Chafarinas Islets and Spanish enclaves in northern Morocco.
