  1. Rabat - In line with the position of the country's Council of Ulemas, the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM) has banned “The Lady of Heaven” from being screened or commercialized across Morocco. A statement from CCM emphasized that the “competent services in the Kingdom are used to authorize cinematographic and audiovisual works, whether they are shot within the national territory or abroad.” It added that “the process is in respect to the legislative and regulatory texts governing the cinematographic sector in Morocco.” On Saturday, Morocco's Council of Ulema condemned the content of the movie, emphasizing that the film constitutes a “flagrant falsification of facts” and contains a heinous “act which cannot be accepted by Muslims.” The controversial movie is the work of filmmaker Eli King and author Yasser Al Habib. Released on June 3, the movie portrays Fatima al-Zhara, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad from the Shia denomination of Islam -- sparking outrage and concerns among Sunni Muslims across the world. Aside from the strong condemnation by authorities and scholars, the movie also divided opinions on social media. While there are petitions calling for the removal of the movie from screening schedules, others in the UK, where the movie was first released, have come out in support of the controversial film. “There has been an attempt by fringe mobs online attempting to pressure UK Cinemas to take down the highly anticipated film, ‘The Lady of Heaven,’” reads the text of the petition in support of the controversial movie. However, only 4,434 people have to date signed the petition. Meanwhile, the petition calling for the pulling out of the movie from the UK cinemas has secured the support of over 131,425 signatories at the time of writing. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/06/349644/morocco-bans-controversial-the-lady-of-heaven-movie-about-prophets-daughter

  5. Rabat - A Moroccan arrested by Russian troops could face the death penalty for fighting on Ukraine’s side against Russia. Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Moroccan -- Brahim Saadoun -- and two British citizens could be sentenced to death after pleading guilty. Russia’s RIA news agency published a video showing the three defendants in a cage inside a courtroom. The Russian news agency said that Brahim Saadoun and Shaun Pinner, one of the two British prisoners, pleaded guilty to “actions aimed at the violent seizure of power.” The video also shows the second British defendant, Aiden Aslin, pleading guilty to his involvement with some kind of weapons and explosives regiment on the Ukrainian side of the ongoing war. The Russian agency said that the charges could lead to death penalty sentences for the three men. The trial of the three men is taking place in Donetsk, an industrial city in Eastern Ukraine that claimed independence at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Brahim Saadoun was arrested in April, with several Russian outlets sharing a video of the Moroccan man being interrogated by Russian soldiers. Following his arrest, RunNews 24, a Russian channel, reported that Sadun was “operating in the Ukrainian army under contract.” Prior to joining Ukraine’s resistance forces before Russia invaded the country in late February, the young Moroccan man was studying at the Faculty of Aerodynamic and Space Technologies at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI). RUNEWS24 quoted him as saying he was frightened when he was arrested by Russian troops. “The most terrible thing was to realize that he was a few meters away from an enemy that he had previously seen through binoculars,” he said. Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued any communique regarding the arrest of the Moroccan man. Meanwhile, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has denounced the Donetsk court's decision, emphasizing that prisoners “should not be prosecuted for participation in hostilities.” https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/06/349584/russia-ukraine-conflict-moroccan-man-pleads-guilty-could-face-death-penalty

  9. Rabat - Digital inclusion in Morocco has provided financial support for the vulnerable po[CENSORED]tions amid the COVID-19 pandemic and opened doors for better access to health and education services to the general public, says Mastercard’s latest report on Financial Inclusion in the Middle East and Africa (MEA). The report, published on June 6, notes that the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis have accelerated the need for digital solutions in the financial and social sectors. “To improve their lives and well-being, people need to be able to take care of their finances, health, and ability to participate in the workforce,” said Umar Hashmi, Vice President of Global Product & Engineering at Mastercard. “This is what financial inclusion efforts can and must aim to enable.” As the Middle East and Africa region struggles to reach financial, health, and education inclusion outside urban hubs, argues the report, there is a clear need for accelerated digital transformation in the region. Despite accumulated challenges, governments and private stakeholders in MEA countries have launched several initiatives to address the financial inclusion gap by facilitating transactions for the unbanked and introducing pay-on-demand business models to make digital services accessible and affordable. In Morocco, digital inclusion has helped “provide quick and secure financial support to disadvantaged demographics amidst the pandemic,” the Mastercard study found, adding that Moroccan informal workers use their smartphones to receive governmental support “quickly and efficiently.” With smartphones facilitating online transactions, the MEA region experienced a notable uptick in smartphone penetration amid the pandemic. Yet the Moroccan penetration rate remains the lowest in the region compared to Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Notably, 75% of the surveyed Moroccans own a smartphone compared to the regional average of 83%, while only 32% of the Moroccan participants acquired one or more smart devices during 2020-2021, 9% shorter than the regional average of 41%. In contrast, Nigeria has the largest ownership of connected devices (87%), and 62% of the Nigerian participants in the study reported that they purchased one or more smart devices in the past two years. As for online transactions, only 34% of Moroccans make online transactions compared to the regional average of 55%. Regionally, digital transactions are commonly conducted through bank services such as applications (87%) and websites (71%). Mobile money accounts and digital wallets are also po[CENSORED]r channels for digital transactions, followed by apple pay, google pay, and Samsung which are less common - only 32% of the participants reported using these payment options. While Moroccan use of online payment remains low, 46% of MEA people use these services to pay for utility bills and receive their salaries. The other uses include sending and receiving money as well as saving or investing. Another use of online devices that rose to the spotlight during the pandemic is digital education services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Moroccan schools were closed fully for 17 weeks and partially for another 17 weeks, which raised the need for digital education services. Mastercard’s study notably found that 47% of Moroccans were connected digitally to an education service provider during the pandemic to attend live classes (57%), interact with teachers or students (51%), learn from recorded classes (48%), manage learning schedules (41%), and pay for services (30%), as well as store and refer to progress reports (27%). https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/06/349553/mastercard-digitization-drives-finance-education-inclusion-in-morocco

  13. Rabat - Hosted at Marrakech’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the 2022 Morocco Fashion Week, organized by Oriental Fashion Show (OFS) offers the perfect opportunity to showcase Moroccan fashion. The event will last from 2-4 June, and feature the attendance of a number of exciting and unique designers. Many designers, such as Rena, Zahra and Hind Tahiri, will be showcasing their latest collections at the show. As part of their collections, these designers have created new variations of the caftan, representing Morocco’s fashion history and culture. Rena, grew up in Casablanca before moving to Europe, where she lived in London, Paris and Milan. Her collection titled “Rena” draws inspiration from her mother’s fashion house “Renata” which has over 40 years of experience. “What I’m doing is a versatile, modern version of the caftan… taking the traditional heritage and making it something really easy to wear,” Rena told Morocco World News. With regards to what occasion her collection is best suited for, the designer said “For lunch or dinner, cocktails or even beachwear”. Each creator has crafted their own individual take on traditional Moroccan clothing. Zahra, who has lived in Madrid for 13 years, says she has always worn caftans to events in Spain. “People used to tell me they loved it, and that I needed to make something here [in Spain] for us”. Zahra has since released her first range, called ‘Zaz’. Talking to MWN, the designer emphasized she wanted “to create something between modern and oriental, dressed with a Moroccan touch…Spanish people are really impressed by these elegant dresses.” Other designers have been inspired by the oriental region as a whole. Hind Tahiri is originally from Tangier but has lived in Dubai for the past 15 years and began her fashion career three years ago. Discussing the inspiration behind her newest range dubbed “Cruise,” Tahiri said “It is inspired by countries all over the world, there is a touch of Greece, Spain, Morocco, Dubai”. The pandemic has also impacted Tahiri’s work. “I’ve been inspired a lot by Dubai, because I’ve been staying in resorts for stay-cations because of Covid, so I’ve been doing a line especially for this,.” she told MWN. The fashion show will display a broad range of outfits and designs, from unique caftans as part of the ‘Rena’ and ‘Zaz’ ranges, to more casual beachwear from Hind Tahiri’s ‘Cruise’ collection. This gathering of diverse designers at this edition of the Oriental Fashion Show’s Morocco Fashion Week has been warmly received by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The up-scale hotel’s General Manager, Marcel Thoma, expressed his excitement for the show. “We believe it’s going to be a fantastic event, I am looking forward in particular to the old couture show.”. With regard to the fashion designers present at the event, Thoma said that “most of the designers are new… Moroccan designers who live abroad bring international influence and there are some really stunning creations.” https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/06/349493/morocco-fashion-week-the-inspiration-behind-the-designs
