UK retail sales dropped in March as the rising cost of living hit consumer spending, according to official data. Online sales fell sharply as people cut down on non-essential spending, the Office for National Statistics said. Fuel sales also dropped as people cut travel amid record petrol and diesel prices. However, overall retail sales were still above pre-Covid levels, the ONS said. Retail sales fell by an unexpected 1.4% in the month, and February's sales figures were also revised down. Darren Morgan, ONS director of economic statistics, said "Online sales were hit particularly hard due to lower levels of discretionary spending. "Fuel sales also fell substantially, with evidence suggesting some people reduced non-essential journeys, following record high petrol prices, while food sales continued to fall, dropping for the fifth consecutive month." The cost of living crisis is being driven by surges in fuel, energy and food prices, with inflation running at 7% - its highest rate for 30 years. Energy and fuel prices had been rising even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine as economies started to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, and the conflict has pushed up prices further. What is the UK's inflation rate and why is the cost of living going up? How much is fuel duty and what will the cut on petrol save you? What is the energy cap and why are energy bills so high? Bethany Beckett, UK economist for Capital Economics, said inflation was set to keep rising and "there's a real risk of an outright fall in consumer spending in the coming quarters". The biggest contribution to the March retail sales slide came from the drop in online sales, which have been falling from pandemic highs after coronavirus restrictions eased. "The sharp decline in sales in March suggests that households are already paring back spending to cope with higher costs for food and fuel," said Ms Beckett. "That is only likely to worsen in the coming months as the cost of living crisis intensifies. After all, the March data predated April's huge 54% rise in utility bills which will have hit household budgets hard." Separately, a survey by GfK suggested that UK consumer confidence in April dropped to its second-lowest level in 50 years due to people's weakening confidence in the economy and in their personal finances. Consumer confidence was at its lowest ebb since July 2008, which was during the severe worldwide economic crisis, the market research firm said. Analysis by Ramzan Karmali, BBC business correspondent The bigger-than-expected fall in retail sales last month was largely down to the current cost of living crisis - that's according to ONS officials. Online sales of non-essential items fell again, and the data suggests that record high petrol prices are having a major impact with a cut in non-essential journeys. More significantly perhaps is the fact food sales have been falling since last November, which is a sign that consumers are paring back their spending to cope with higher costs. Economists believe the situation will only become more acute as March's data came before April's 54% hike in gas and electricity bills. They also point to falling consumer confidence - the survey for this in April slumped to its lowest level in 14 years. 2px presentational grey line Meanwhile, a survey of businesses suggested a slowdown in private sector growth in April. The UK's dominant services sector saw growth slow sharply, the S&P Global/CIPS composite Purchasing Managers' Index indicated. Although manufacturing growth picked up slightly after a five-month low in March, new manufacturing orders from abroad fell by the most since June 2020 as orders from Europe fell back. Firms also said export orders were hit by Brexit, recent congestion in UK ports and sanctions on Russia, the survey found. There was also a sharp rise in company insolvencies in March, according to official data. The number of firms going bust rose to 2,114 in March, more than double the number in March 2021, and a third higher than pre-pandemic figures. 'Stagflation risk' The Bank of England has been raising interest rates to try to cool inflation, and its key rate currently stands at 0.75%. Its governor, Andrew Bailey, said on Thursday that the Bank was walking a tight line between dealing with inflation and avoiding recession. Bank of England monetary policymaker Catherine Mann said that interest rates would probably have to go up "a little bit" further. Asked about the risk of so-called "stagflation", which is a combination of slow growth and high inflation, Ms Mann said "in some senses, we could say we're already there" because of the jump in energy prices and slowing retail sales. "But I think that, you know, it's premature to kind of hearken back to the 1980s or the 1970s, in the US context in particular, and use that vocabulary," she said. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61157856

Polar bears, or “sea bears,” are the world’s largest land predators, weighing up to 600 kg (1300 lb.) and measuring up to 3 m (10 ft.) tall. On average they live to be about 25 years old, reaching sexual maturity at around 4 years. Although they appear white or yellow in color, their fur is actually clear and hollow, and their skin is black. Their visibly pale coloring is caused by the reflection and scattering of light. Inhabiting the ice and sea of the Arctic, polar bears are well-equipped for survival in a harsh environment. Two coats of fur and a thick layer of blubber help insulate the polar bear’s body from the cold, keeping its temperature at an even 37° C (98.6° F). In addition, polar bears’ paws are especially adapted for walking on the ice and swimming in the sea. Hairs and bumps on the soles of their feet provide traction, while webbing between their toes allows for effective swimming strokes. Polar bears are also equipped with strong noses. They use their powerful sense of smell when hunting for seals, their main source of food. They can smell a seal’s breathing hole, or aglu, up to one mile away. Once located, a polar bear will wait patiently by the hole and attack the seal’s head when it comes up for air. In ideal hunting conditions, the bear will just eat the seal fat, leaving the carcass for other animals. However, when food is scarce, polar bears will eat just about anything. Supplemental foods include walruses, short-legged reindeer, birds, bird eggs, kelp, and beached whales. When in proximity to human settlements, they have even been known to eat garbage such as Styrofoam. Polar bears do not hibernate like other bears, but females do enter into a dormant state while pregnant. After mating in the spring, a female polar bear spends the summer ingesting large amounts of food and building a maternity den in a snow drift to prepare for the arrival of her cubs. In the fall, she enters into a dormant state, remaining this way even as she gives birth. The litter, usually two cubs, will spend two years with their mother learning essential hunting and survival skills. Conservation Status Polar bears are currently listed as vulnerable by IUCN’s Red List. Global warming greatly impacts the fate of the polar bear. A reduction of large masses of ice results in limited access to seals. Not only does this adversely affect the health of adult polar bears, it also hinders the successful reproduction and nourishment of new bear cubs. Rising temperatures also result in unstable maternity dens, as snowdrifts melt and collapse. What You Can Do to Help To help save the polar bear habitat, you can support the Climate Reality Project, which urges world leaders, companies, and communities to take action in curbing global warming. https://animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/polar-bear/

Video uploaded to the r/flying thread on Reddit appears to show a Tesla Model Y drive straight into the tail of a parked jet. How the car got onto the tarmac is unclear, but the original post claims the vehicle was being operated in its "Summon" feature mode, where an operator can hail the car from a nearby parking spot, with the car then driving itself to the location of the user, at least when there isn't a massive jet in the way. In the video, we see a Tesla Model Y enter from out of frame and drive under the tail of a Cirrus Vision Jet, where its windshield and roof then collide with the (stationary) aircraft. Right as that is happening, two people can also be seen entering the frame, with one of them seemingly operating the vehicle remotely. The Tesla even tries to continue forward after impacting the plane, suggesting Tesla's sensor suite isn't designed to sense taller objects hovering above the ground (such as this aircraft's tail), so maybe it's not great for aircraft traffic. The incident appears to have taken place at Felt's Field (KSFF) near Spokane, Washington, possibly during a public or private event. Reddit comments suggest aircraft manufacturer Cirrus was hosting an event during the time of the crash. The rules and regulations for driving on the airfield are available online; commercial operators must maintain a $1,000,000 automobile liability insurance policy, and personal hangar lessees must maintain a $300,000 automobile liability. The first-generation of the Cirrus Vision Jet is reportedly priced around $2 million. According to the Felt's Field website, Cirrus operates a service center and training program at the airfield, as well as carry out Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) testing. MotorTrend has reached out to Felt's Field and Cirrus for more details regarding the video, and will update with more information as we have it. https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-y-summon-aircraft-crash-cirrus-vision-jet/

There are no shells exploding in Moscow. There are no foreign forces encircling the city. What Muscovites are experiencing now is nothing compared to the horrors in Ukraine. At first glance life here even looks normal. As usual, Moscow's Garden Ring is packed with traffic. Crowds are streaming from the metro station opposite me. In reality, though, little here could be described as normal. Normality ended on 24 February when Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into Ukraine for his "Special Military Operation". I have experienced Communist Russia. I have lived through post-Soviet Russia. Now the world's largest country has metamorphosed again. Let me take you on a tour of "Special Military Operation Russia". I get in the car to drive to the supermarket. By force of habit, I switch on the radio. It's tuned to 91.2 FM - once the home of Radio Echo of Moscow. Echo was my favourite Russian radio station - a reliable source of news and information. But in recent weeks all independent Russian news outlets have either been blocked or shut down. Broadcasting now on 91.2 FM is state-run Radio Sputnik, which backs the Russian offensive in Ukraine. Driving along the Garden Ring, I pass a theatre which has erected on its façade a giant Latin letter Z - the symbol of Russia's military operation. There's another Z outside the headquarters of Russian Railways. I overtake a lorry that has a Z sticker on the side. In recent weeks Zs have been graffitied on the front doors of Kremlin critics. At the shopping mall, business is far from booming. Many of the shops - international brands - have shut down. Since Russian forces attacked Ukraine, hundreds of foreign companies have suspended operations in Russia. Doctor's salary not enough In the supermarket, the shelves are full. Last month's sugar shortage in Russia - the result of panic buying - appears to have been resolved. But the range of products seems smaller than before. And over the last two months prices have shot up. Outside the shopping centre, I get chatting to Nadezhda, a doctor. "Prices are so high, it's impossible to survive now on my salary," Nadezhda tells me. "But the hardest thing of all is living in a society that doesn't want to know the truth about events in Ukraine. People are too busy worrying about their mortgage payments, paying off their debts. They're not interested in what's going on around them. But I think that what's happening in Ukraine is terrible. I'm ashamed to be Russian." I drive to the Moscow engineering institute where, 30 years ago, I used to teach English. Back in the early 1990s, after the fall of communism, my students here were full of hope that Russia and the West would forge a lasting friendship and partnership; that the future would be peaceful and prosperous. That didn't work out. "We'll overcome all our difficulties. After sunset always comes the dawn," says Denis, a student, outside the institute. "But I support our troops. They are our soldiers. I am obliged to support my country come what may." Orwellian distortions My final destination is the giant war museum that celebrates the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two - a glorious victory, achieved at enormous human cost. More than 27 million Soviet citizens were killed in what is known here as the Great Patriotic War. What I find disturbing is how the "Special Military Operation" has found a place in this museum, how it's being honoured here. On the museum's website, the spelling of the word "museum" has been altered to feature the letter Z. In the museum shop you can buy Z mugs and badges declaring "Putin is My PreZident". And the museum is currently hosting an exhibition about Nazis in Ukraine. That helps to cement the Kremlin's bogus claim that the Russian army is liberating Ukraine from Nazism. This is "Special Military Operation Russia" - a parallel universe, Orwellian, where invasion is liberation, where aggression is self-defence and where critics are traitors. It feels like the Russia I have known for the last 30 years has gone. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61188783

Amrita Rao and her husband RJ Anmol opened up about their pregnancy struggles, sharing in a YouTube video how their plans to expand their family led to them considering surrogacy. Unfortunately for them, while their surrogate conceived, they lost the baby. The couple is parents to a son, Veer, whom they welcomed in 2020. But, there was a time when they were struggling to conceive, and considered options like IUI and IVF. But, it was surrogacy that excited them the most. Amrita, 40, said in the video that it was her husband who wanted to have a child more than her. “I was still cool about it… I completely believe that when you are trying to have a baby and you do not succeed, you just leave it to faith,” she said, while her husband added, “But, you need to explore all your options.” When a doctor suggested surrogacy to the couple, they were open to it, but had some apprehensions as well. “We had to interview some surrogate mothers, know about their health and family,” Anmol said. They added that Amrita was told that she was physically okay to carry a child, but since the couple was unable to conceive naturally, they thought of surrogacy as the best option. For the uninitiated, surrogacy is of two types: traditional surrogacy, wherein a surrogate is artificially inseminated with the sperm of the father, and she can then carry the child full term; and gestational surrogacy, wherein eggs from the mother are fertilised with the father’s/donor’s sperm and then the embryo is placed into the uterus of the surrogate. In this case, the biological mother is the woman whose eggs are used, while the surrogate is called the ‘birth mother’. During the waiting period — when they expected to learn if the conception had happened — they were given the ‘good news’. “The doctor told me the baby has a heartbeat,” Anmol said. But, a few days later, they learnt that there was no longer a heartbeat. Amrita, surprisingly, took the news positively. They took a break and the following year, they were suggested to try IVF. “I didn’t want to do it,” Amrita said, and Anmol added, “But, there was no choice.” They tried one IVF cycle, but nothing happened. When the second one — at a new clinic — was also unsuccessful, the Vivah actor decided to no longer undergo it. They even tried Homeopathy and Ayurveda, but nothing worked. “Then, I began to think if we even wanted a child,” Amrita said. They decided to accept the reality of the situation — that they may never have a baby. They packed their bags and went on a vacation to Koh Samui in Thailand. In March 2020, Amrita felt a little ‘strange’ and decided to get a blood test, results of which came out positive. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/amrita-rao-rj-anmol-pregnancy-struggle-losing-baby-via-surrogacy-ivf-iui-7882697/

Ponting wasn't a part of the Delhi Capitals' (DC) setup for the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) as one of his family members tested positive for COVID-19. Delhi Capitals’ (DC) batter Prithvi Shaw talked about the influence Ricky Ponting has had on the team over the years. Ponting wasn’t a part of the Capitals’ setup for the match against Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Friday, April 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after one of his family members tested positive for COVID-19. Ponting’s family member was staying in the team hotel and the veteran was deemed as one of the close contacts. The DC coach is currently on a five-day isolation period. Shaw, who has been part of the Delhi-based franchise since 2018, said despite staying away from the team, Ponting has sent his input for the match against the Royals. Shaw referred to Ponting as the “boss” of the team and talked about how the former Australian skipper leads from the front. ‘Hope we don't disappoint him’ “Everything is okay. Obviously, a lot of hectic things are going on in the rooms and in the hotel itself, everything is fine now. Ricky is not coming but he did message us on how we are going to approach this game and all this Covid stuff is going in your head. You're mentally prepared for it (the game) and have to focus on the on-field stuff," Shaw said. “He's (Ponting) the boss of the team and when the boss is not here you can feel a bit different. But we have other coaches here and they understand these things, we will be fine playing under them. It all depends on my mood before the match day. If I want to have a hit or not, Ricky Sir always asks us what we want to do." “When I am scoring runs I don't really like to bat and don't want to get worse in the nets. The boss is watching from the hotel room and I hope we don't disappoint him,” he added. As far as Shaw is concerned, after DC’s first six matches, he was the leading run-scorer for the franchise in the ongoing season. The right-hander scored 217 runs from six games at an average of 36.16 and a strike rate of 170.86 with two half-centuries to his name. His top score of 61 came against KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants. https://www.indiatoday.in/sports/ipl-2022/story/dc-vs-rr-prithvi-shaw-on-ricky-ponting-s-influence-in-delhi-capitals-when-the-boss-is-not-here-you-can-feel-a-bit-different-1940781-2022-04-22

Meta has announced a long list of VR games that are set to appear on Oculus Quest soon. From Ghostbusters to Among Us, here are all the titles that you will be able to enjoy in virtual reality in the coming months. HIGHLIGHTS Meta has announced 12 new VR games for Oculus Quest. The games will be launched by this year and the next. Among Us VR and Resident Evil 4 - The Mercenaries are some of the highly anticipated VR games among the list. Meta, the parent group of Facebook, recently held the Meta Quest Gaming showcase for 2022. The second of its kind annual event demonstrated a series of games in a 30-minute presentation, all of which are meant for Oculus Quest, the company's VR gaming platform. So as can be judged, VR gaming is definitely an important segment as far as Meta's plans for the near future are concerned. Why not? After all, the technology major already has the whole ecosystem present for a gaming experience in virtual worlds. It already sells the Oculus Quest VR headsets and gear, and it is among the most po[CENSORED]r options available in the market right now. All Meta has to do now is bring more content onto the platform and Oculus Quest will be the go-to option for gamers seeking VR experiences. A look at the list of games that Meta has planned for this year and the next shows just that. From Ghostbusters to Among Us, the company has some major gaming titles already set for a VR conversion. So, without any delay, here is a look at them all. Ghostbusters VR The franchise needs no introduction and Meta's plan to come up with a VR version of it is largely based on that. As Meta mentions in its blog, Ghostbusters VR will let you "track, blast, and trap ghosts" in the Ghostbusters universe, with options for single as well as multiplayer gaming. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution A sequel to The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, which was released two years ago, the game by Skydance Interactive will continue the story in New Orleans in a "more dangerous" setting than before. So, expect to face some dangerous zombie situations in virtual reality soon. Bonelab Set to release later this year, Bonelab will come as a successor to the hugely po[CENSORED]r VR game Boneworks and will be available for both Quest 2 and PC VR. The game will have a brand new story following a character escaping execution and trying to uncover the truth about his/ her reality. Though the anticipation is more around the simulation and how the player's actions in real life interact with the virtual in-game objects. NFL PRO ERA The first officially-licensed NFL game to hit VR, NFL PRO ERA uses NFL game data to create an authentic on-the-field NFL VR experience. Created by StatusPRO, the game will let you practice or play championship matches, all the way to the Super Bowl. Among Us VR The hugely po[CENSORED]r online multiplayer game is going to have a VR version by the end of 2022. The VR version will be produced in partnership with InnerSloth, Robot Teddy, and Schell Games. Meta has also announced a long-term partnership with Schell Games, known for creating interactive game experiences, for three more gaming titles, though details on these are yet to be shared. Resident Evil 4 - The Mercenaries Entirely rebuilt for VR by Armature Studio, Oculus Studios and Capcom, The Mercenaries is out now as a free update for those who own Resident Evil 4 on Meta Quest 2. The Meta Quest 2 version features exclusive online leaderboards as well as 20 new challenges. Completing these challenges will unlock new features, like a Big Head Mode, a black-and-white Classic Horror Mode, and Golden Gun skins. Players will even be able to use these items in the main Resident Evil 4 campaign. These were some of the major titles that Meta announced at the event for its Oculus Quest. Some of the other games that are also in the lineup include Beat Saber - Electronic Mixtape, Cities: VR, RUINSMAGUS, Moss: Book II, Espire 2 and Red Matter 2. While the rest are meant to be released later this year and next, Cities: VR is already up for pre-booking and will be available on Quest 2 starting April 28. https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/meta-goes-big-on-vr-gaming-with-ghostbusters-among-us-and-ten-new-vr-games-set-for-launch-soon-1940255-2022-04-21

Climate change has forced humankind to think differently in order to preserve the planet and every living being. A wide variety of technologies and services that preserve natural resources have emerged worldwide, as a result of research and innovation efforts. We now have zero-emission vehicles, smart and more efficient appliances, green packaging made from biodegradable plastic, and even lab-grown meat. How about software? Can an app be green too? Apps—and anything else that is programmed—can actually be more or less efficient and require more or less power to perform their tasks. And if an inefficient app does not shock you, imagine if all the Google servers were consuming twice the power they do today, because of poor optimization. It's all about scale. A group of researchers from the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) and the University of Minho focuses on that exact point: making sure the software on everything that surrounds us is coded as efficiently as possible. "We want to raise awareness and help programmers build more sustainable and robust solutions," stated João Saraiva, a researcher at INESC TEC and professor at the University of Minho. Writing more efficiently The group has released a scientific publication where they compared the efficiency of different Android keyboard applications, such as Google Keyboard (GBoard) and Microsoft SwiftKey. Because smartphones run on batteries, the whole system must be as efficient as possible to extend battery life to the max. "In fact, replacing the most energy-greedy keyboard with the greenest one has reduced energy consumption by 18%, and when advanced features of those keyboards (word prediction or animations) were turned off, the energy consumption was also reduced, in this case, up to 9.3%", wrote the researchers Rui Rua, Tiago Fraga, Marco Couto, and João Saraiva. What if we consider the smartphone as a whole, instead of one specific app? With that in mind, the team has also developed GreenHub, an Android application that is able to measure the power consumption of smartphones. The data collected from the application allowed the analysis of the battery consumption of 23 million samples, spread across more than 1,600 device brands, 11,800 smartphone models, and more than 50 Android versions, which resulted in this publication. The authors were able to find charge/discharge tendencies across different countries, observable battery tendencies across brands and models, and battery usage improvements between Android versions. They have also studied how some of the most po[CENSORED]r applications such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook Lite (now called Meta) behave in terms of battery consumption tendencies. In addition to studies focused on analyzing energy consumption, the group is also dedicated to developing tools and methodologies to estimate software energy consumption. "The development of such artifacts is motivated by the need to provide tools for developers and researchers to detect source code critical energy hotspots," explained researcher Rui Rua. The latest artifact developed within this scope is a tool called E-MANAFA, which allows monitoring and estimating the energy consumption of software on Android devices. Programming more efficiently Programming languages are the backbones of mobile applications, websites and so much more. And there are currently hundreds of programming languages available that solve different problems programmers need to address. Python, for example, is often used in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and JavaScript for Web development, just to name a few. The group of researchers has placed programming languages under the microscope to find the ones that require more energy to perform similar tasks. The result is a scientific publication featuring the rank of 27 languages from power-saver to energy-drainer. "Developers can use this information to decide what programming language is the most appropriate for their target scenario, which can vary according to several constraints, such as limits on battery, time, and memory," said João Saraiva. Google's energy consumption has increased over the last few years, reaching 15.4 terawatt hours in 2020, which would be enough to power 9.6 million European households in 2019, and it is very likely to keep on increasing, not only in Google's case, but in most industries. Considering that the world is using more and more power, it is of the highest importance to optimize energy. Although it might not be visible to the end-users, power efficiency in software should be taken into account if the world aims to address climate change, as 80% of the world's produced energy still originates from fossil fuels. Automatic debugging Coding will inevitably result in bugs, and the act of debugging is, by itself, a way to improve the energy efficiency of software. The group is also focused on Software Fault Localization (SFL), one of the most expensive and time-consuming activities in program debugging. "We have developed a technique that provides semantical information about the modifications that led to a software bug. The tool that implements this technique is publicly available and it is called Morpheus," said Francisco Ribeiro, researcher at INESC TEC. In this publication, the authors showed that automated repair techniques can benefit from this new information and fix programs more effectively. But isn't there a way to debug automatically? That is what Automated Program Repair (APR) is all about: fixing faulty programs with as little human intervention as possible. In fact, companies like Meta clearly acknowledge such benefits and actively conduct research in this area. Regarding APR, the Portuguese group of researchers obtained a repair rate of 27% in their studies with more than 6,000 faulty programs. The energy crisis has begun, and climate change is right around the corner. In an ever-growing digital society, being digitally efficient is a must. Whatever the method is, it is good to know software engineers are doing their part. https://techxplore.com/news/2022-04-coding-green-software-sustainable-robust.html

Departing from its traditionally casual roots, Outfit7 has just announced that Android users in the US can now pre-register for its brand new action-packed strategy title; Mythic Legends. It's been almost 9 months since we first covered Mythic Legends, which thoroughly impressed us when it soft launched last summer. Its mix of epic battles and dramatic visuals, as well as its unique spin on the auto chess formula, made for a highly entertaining experience; one that was made all the more tantalising thanks to the game’s staggering range of Champions to collect. Xinyu Qian, CEO of Outfit7, recently stated that the mission of Mythic Legends has been “to open up a brand new world of action and adventure for players” that promises to do “things that no other game in the genre is doing , and all in such an exciting, compelling way that’s easy to learn, but hard to master.” Mythic Legends’ unique mix of RPG, auto chess, and strategy elements combined for an enthralling experience during our first playthrough, so we’ll be eager to revisit the game again when it finally launches worldwide for iOS and Android next month. In the meantime, Android users can look forward to getting their Mythic Legends experience off to a perfect start by receiving a Mythic Booster Pack upon its release. It feels like only yesterday that we reported on Sega's apparent plans to 'aggressively monetise' its future games (when in fact it was two days ago). It seems we didn't have to wait long for this plan to kick into action, as yesterday Sega put out a perplexing DLC chart for the upcoming Sonic Origins collection—which contains remastered versions of Sonic The Hedgehog 1,2, 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. There was quite a bit of backlash to the chart, which showed various content locked off bizarre stuff like menu animations, letterbox background and most egregiously "hard missions" behind paid DLC. That's still the case, but at least now the chart is clearer and shows that the Start Dash Pack comes bundled as free DLC with preorders of the game. That Start Dash Pack isn't exactly great, as it's making you preorder the game to get content that really seems like it should be accessible from the start. The Start Dash Pack contains letterbox background, Mirror Mode, and 100 Bonus Coins. So does that mean that those who don't preorder won't ever get to play the game in Mirror Mode, or (more likely) that it will be unlockable using the in-game currency or as a paid DLC down the line? Even if you preorder the Standard Edition, you still don't get access to the 'Hard Missions.' For those you'll need the Premium Fun Pack, which comes with other 'fun' stuff like "character animations in the main menu" and (joy of joys) "camera controls over the main menu islands. It's worth stressing the developer Headcannon, who made the excellent Sonic Mania and have helped develop this collection, weren't involved in the DLC mess. They tweeted yesterday: "Of the remade Sonic the Hedgehog games, Headcannon previously assisted in preproduction of SCD, co-developed S1 and S2, and now, developed a similarly enhanced S3&K! Sonic Origins and its integration and presentation of these games is separately created and curated by Sega." HONG KONG: Asian stocks were digesting news about growth concerns in China and rising interest rates in the United States on Tuesday with Japan edging marginally higher, but Hong Kong falling sharply in early trade. Chinese growth numbers for the first quarter of 2022 exceeded expectations on Monday but the government warned of "significant challenges" ahead. Shanghai, the country's economic centre, is in the throes of an intense Covid-19 lockdown with restrictions -- which have also hit tech hub Shenzhen and the northeastern grain basket of Jilin -- shutting supply lines. Investors were left weighing whether attempts to lift the economy by Chinese policymakers -- who have held off cutting interest rates -- would offset Beijing's zero-Covid policies. "The unwillingness to loosen monetary policy further before Covid is under control means that market sentiment will probably remain bleak in coming weeks," the Gavekal Dragonomics team told Bloomberg. "However, equities will rally even harder if lockdowns lift and policymakers start to make up for lost growth with additional easing measures." Japan's Nikkei 225 made healthy gains in early trade with South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, and Australia all edging upward. But Hong Kong plummeted more than 2.5% in the first hour of trading after a four-day holiday hiatus. The impact of monetary policy tightening in the United States to combat inflation was another variable watched closely by investors. Meanwhile, oil prices continued to climb as Libya's National Oil Corporation announced the closure of operations in major sites after staff in the key export terminal of Zueitina and the Al-Sharara oil field were blocked from working. Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management said the rise in prices shows "just how bullishly reactive oil markets have become to supply shocks." And the Japanese yen continued its drop against the dollar after crossing a new 20-year low Monday, reflecting the continued accommodation of Japanese monetary policy, while US policymakers move to hike interest rates. - Key figures around 0230 GMT - Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 0.20% at 26,854.87 Shanghai - Composite: UP 0.10% at 3,198.84 Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 2.72% at 20,933.13 Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.0767 from $1.0802 Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.2993 from $1.3023 Euro/pound: FLAT at 82.87 pence Dollar/yen: UP at 127.77 yen from 126.54 yen Brent North Sea crude: UP 0.36% at $113.55 per barrel West Texas Intermediate: UP 0.14% at $108.36 per barrel New York - Dow: DOWN 0.1% at 34,411.69 (close) London - FTSE 100: Closed for a holiday https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/951526-asia-markets-react-to-china-chinese-economic-data

The late night screeching, stress-induced stink, and fierce look led early Australian settlers to name this marsupial the devil. Although once found all over Australia, Tasmanian devils now live only on the island state of Tasmania. Inhabiting coastal scrub and forest areas, they make their dens anywhere they can safely sleep during the day, including hollow logs, old wombat burrows, and naturally-formed caves. The Tasmanian devil is only the size of a small dog. It has black fur that helps it stay camouflaged when searching for food at night. It is also characterized by its sharp teeth, which aid in eating. A nocturnal scavenger and sometime hunter, the Tasmanian devil a can travel long distances while looking for food.It will eat whatever is available, usually carrion (dead animals), sometimes eating spoiled or rotting meat. It will also eat fur and bones, which it crushes in its powerful jaws. Although they are solitary animals, Tasmanian devils will gather together to feed, often growling viciously at each other trying to scare off their competition. When they finish eating, there is nothing left of the carcass. Tasmanian devils’ breeding season lasts from March to May. Female devils will mate with dominant males, who fight to gain their attention. Three weeks after conception, the females give birth to up to 50 babies, called joeys. These 50 extremely tiny joeys scramble to attach themselves to one of the four available teats in the mother’s pouch. Those that do not make it will not survive. The remaining joeys will attach to the nipple in the pouch for roughly 3 months while they become fully developed. Like the wombat, the Tasmanian devil has a pouch that opens on the bottom to keep dirt out while traveling. After the joeys leave their mother’s pouch, they remain hidden in the den for another 3 months. During this time the mother brings food to the young, and eventually the young devils begin venturing out on their own before finally leaving the den for good. They can live for up to 5 years in the wild. Conservation Status The Tasmanian devil is protected on the island of Tasmania. Efforts have been made to sustain their po[CENSORED]tion there. Being hit by cars is a major case of death for the devils, as they often feed on roadkill. The Tasmanian devils are also susceptible to Devil Facial Tumour Disease, which has dramatically decreased the po[CENSORED]tion in the past 10 years. As such, they have been listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List. What You Can Do to Help To help you can volunteer with the Devil Facial Tumour Disease Team or donate to the University of Tasmania Foundation. https://animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/tasmanian-devil/

Like sailors and explorers of the past exploring new lands once did (and some intrepid seafarers or pilots still do), finding a reference in the night sky to track the direction of where you're going and where you've come from is critical. Preferably that something is constant and will be there whenever you need it as you wander unfamiliar places (and, you know, it isn't cloudy outside). Just as those long ago discoverers used a reference star, a lodestar, to make their way through the night, Lincoln will use a star of its own—the Star Concept—as its guide as it moves into an all electric and connected future, where new digital content and features can be added later in a vehicle's life. As manufacturers venture into the electric vehicle era, simplified vehicles with flat floors affording ever more space are tempting for engineers to stuff in even more cutting-edge technology, more (and sometimes larger) screens, and gimmicky features. Often times these over-the-top design leaps are incorporated into prototypes close to production, but aren't they just more fun when they're installed in a pure show car, one that isn't intended to ever go on sale? The Lincoln Star Concept is just such a fantasy, bundling loads of features and design cues hinting at what Lincoln and its teams are thinking about when the brand goes fully electric. Yes, this is a return of the wild concept vehicles you remember OEMs decades ago—think GM's midcentury Motorama meets modernity. Let's start with the lighting, as that's something many manufacturers deploy to distinguish their vehicles next to grille shapes. Given how the latter won't be as necessary on EVs as they are on ICE vehicles, lighting is going to become a more crucial brand identifier. So what will Lincolns' peepers look like in the future? LED light touches are abound on the Star Concept, with the frontal area featuring a full-width LED matrix with the Lincoln "star" emblem backlit through a body color nose panel. Above those, the frunk (front trunk) lid features lighting within its diamond-like lattice structure that fades to black with a clear center. While the clear portion would expose your belongings, it can be set to a privacy mode that completely hides the contents. There are even lights above each wheel, with a small line of light following the shape of each wheel arch and molded flush with the body. The front doors feature a backlit Lincoln "star" emblem that disappears when the vehicle is off; like the front badge, this lit element shines through the skin of the door. The split between the glass roof and cabin glass (including the windshield and rear window) also is highlighted by a thin, continuous strip of light. Stepping towards the rear, the tail lights span across the split gate rear and feature more of the diamond-shaped lattice seen in the front. The "Lincoln" logo and LED highlights are—you're probably ready for this one—hidden behind the body skin and disappear into the body color when off. With the additional interior space an EV can provide, it's a shame to feel so cooped up by excessive bodywork and minimal glass area. Not an issue with the Star Concept. First, there are no B-pillars and the doors open from the center like an old-school coach-door Lincoln Continental. The A- and D-pillars are made of glass, with a 3D-printed metal diamond lattice support structure made underneath them. This structure gives strength while also providing transparent openings for better visibility and lending the Star Concept an almost open-air feeling. If the sun is too much, the roof features a digital shade to block it out. With Lincoln looking to go all electric, it also needed a new body shape that embraces classic Lincoln design with modern aerodynamics for maximum EV efficiency. It's why the body, while SUV-like in its general shape, is streamlined without most of the traditional body trim we see on current gas-fed models. The facias transition smoothly into the sheetmetal and the doors are shapely but without the usual moldings. The wheels are not only larger, but also have a minimum of extra width for reduced rolling resistance and are aerodynamically designed with mostly closed-off faces. Even the door mirrors have been replaced with small cameras. It all makes for a much cleaner design without reducing the Star's muscular SUV stance. As the coach doors open to greet the passengers, the steering wheel folds out from underneath the Star's floating dashboard. An LED matrix in the upper door panels recalls a diamond stitch pattern and Lincoln emblems guide you towards the lounger-style rear seats. Individual screens then slide out from the front seat backs, hidden away inside their upper seat back covers. All of this is also timed with the exterior lighting to create the "Lincoln Embrace" welcome sequence. The interior is split between the front and rear passengers by unique finishes and alternatives to leather and chrome that retain the look and feel of both. The front is lightly colored and features strip lighting in the floor with seats that surround them for maximum comfort. If the front passengers would like to talk to the rear passengers face-to-face, both front seats can swivel 180 degrees. Spanning the entire floating dashboard is a curved digital screen that allows content to flow seamlessly across and from front to back while a table slides out from the dash and between the front occupants for an extra workspace. Just above that sliding table are the touch-sensitive shifter controls, while infotainment control is performed by a dial on the center console. The brake and accelerator controls are drive-by-wire, but the control is a single pedal made of clear materials to keep from interrupting the flow of the floor lighting. Wait, there is only one pedal, though—what gives? Meet Lincoln's take on one-pedal driving, wherein simply lifting off the accelerator dials up sufficient stopping power via the regenerative braking (and, we hope, a mechanical back-up system). So, uh, Lincoln took this idea—which is available today in several production EVs—to its nadir by literally going with one pedal, without a separate brake pedal just in case. Bold. You'll also find that the front trunk area passes through to the cabin, with no firewall in between. That front cargo area also features a drawer that slides out with the entire front panel for extra storage space under the front trunk. The rear passenger area flips the script and goes with wine-colored flooring and laid-back seats with leg extensions that slide out and allow their occupants to prop their feet up. Don't worry about shoes dirtying up that leg rest, as occupants' shoes can be placed in a slide out cubby made into those foot rests. Much like first-class cabin seating on a plane, the rear seats feature an elegant table that folds out of the rear doors so passengers can use it for wining and dining. As if a luxury drinking experience requires cold snacks, the Star Concept features a glass beverage chiller between the upper seatbacks. Those upper seatbacks also feature LED lighting with a diamond and Lincoln badge image coming through. The rear passenger center console also slides out as a convenient place to rest objects while the climate and light controls for the rear occupants. While the interior is designed for only four people, the rear split gate can be turned into a rear seat, with a seat back that folds out from the cargo area and the seat bottom formed from the tailgate panel, though this presumably is only for when the Star is parked. Between the rear door panels is a hidden compartment called the "Lincoln Attaché," which works as storage and a charge point for devices. It's also able to wireless connect incoming content from apps that can be passed digitally to their individual screens, allowing them to work without needing direct access to their laptops, tablets, and other connected devices. While the spacious interior allows tons of light in, the Star Concept features three "rejuvenation moods" tied to our natural circadian rhythm as we flow through the day. (Bear with us, this is Lincoln's gig, not ours.) These moods are also designed to help get your mind off of the chaos of traffic or work and make the car into your true third space and sanctuary. There is "Coastal Morning," with lighting and sounds that remind you of walking along the beach during sunrise, plus the fragrance of sea mist. Yes, the cabin will be filled with fragrances for each mood. Another mood is "Mindful Vitality," with invigorating sounds, lighting, and artwork on the screens and a flowery fragrance to remind you of a nice springtime day. Pictured above is "Evening Chill," which is a darker theme with a nighttime sound track and a night sky video playing as an evergreen fragrance fills the cabin like you're walking back on a cool, moonlight night to your campsite in the Pacific Northwest. It's All Connected, All The Time What if you didn't like the lighting sequence during startup or you wanted different images playing during one of the rejuvenation moods? What if a new feature could be added digitally, such as a new driving mode or voice command? What if the Lincoln Star (if it were real), were secondhand and the new owner wanted features that were left out during its first purchase? The future path for Lincoln isn't just furnishing new vehicles and dealership experiences, but also new digital content for existing cars. Lincoln is fully embracing the idea of a truly customized experience through its wireless updates and plays with it on the Star. New features could be purchased and downloaded to Lincoln's new EVs along with the usual software updates and fixes. These vehicles will always be connected to the web just for this reason That pie-in-the-sky connectivity goal also explains why Lincoln has waited longer than Ford to move forward with splashy new electric vehicles. The luxury brand needed a vehicle platform that was advanced enough to allow for all of these features and design ideas to become a potential reality, and to keep up with developments down the road. As of right now, the underpinnings of Ford's EVs just aren't advanced enough to be the technology leader that Lincoln wants to be seen as. Joy Falotico, president of Lincoln, explains: "We made a choice to wait for the all new architecture, which is what the Lincoln Star Concept is based off of and what some of our future EVs will also be based on. We waited for a platform we felt that had all the Lincoln Intelligence that is required for the digital content and connectivity our luxury clients expect." Mass market cars don't require the processing power as they feature less digital content and connectivity than what Lincoln is expecting to include in their EVs. Even though the Lincoln Star Concept isn't destined to production, over half of the Ford luxury brand's global volume is expected to be EVs someday. Lincoln anticipates having its first three all-electric platforms by 2025, with a fourth coming in 2026. Production is also expected to be split between China—Lincoln's best-selling region—and America. What Reality To Expect From The Star Concept As wild as the Lincoln Star Concept is, we're confident most of its fanciful aspects have a decent shot at becoming reality in the coming years. The wheel design is an obvious one, as the face isn't terribly hard to replicate, but don't expect it on any ICE-powered Lincoln. The side cameras to replace mirrors for full rear view (rather than just the interior) are potentially coming, as it's mostly just U.S. FMVSS rules that are standing in the way. Similar onboard connectivity and digital customization is already being done by Polestar, with a recent offering of an OTA update to allow its users to increase the power of their Polestar 2s by purchasing it online, so that's a given. We're also already seeing 3D-printed parts, both plastic and metal, in production cars. Even the way LED matrix lighting is used could become a production part, save for possibly shining through body panels like the doors, though it's possible to shave an area down to the thinness necessary for jaw-dropping backlighting effects. Among the we'll believe-it-when-we-see it aspects are the lattice and glass structures of the roof pillars. The glass pillars have been shown before, but rollover requirements might still prevent this until 3D metal printing becomes more consistent in high-load structural use. A variable-translucence glass is already a thing, so the hood's privacy shade and the roof sunshade could work, however, we doubt a glass or see-through hood would become a production part and is mostly an "oh, wow" factor for the concept. The main goal here, again, is gauging customer interest in the Star's design and features and offering a peek at what future Lincoln EVs will look like. Look for elements of the Star to shine their way into those four new Lincoln EVs due by the end of the decade. Do we wish Lincoln would just make the Star into something right now? Of course, but we'll take the basic design furnished here and some of those fun widgets any way we can get them. https://www.motortrend.com/news/lincoln-star-concept-ev-first-look-review/

IPL 2022, MI vs CSK: Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a second-ball duck by Mukesh Choudhary in the first over of the Mumbai Indians innings. In the same over, Mukesh Choudhary also removed Ishan Kishan for a duck. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck off the second ball of the innings after Chennai Super Kings won the toss and decided to bowl. Mukesh Choudhary, who had dismissed Virat Kohli during their win over RCB, struck in his first over to dismiss Rohit Sharma at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday. Rohit Sharma has had a nightmarish season in IPL 2022. In 7 matches so far, Rohit has managed only 114 runs. In their first match of the year, Rohit had scored 41 against Delhi Capitals before a string of failures. In the subsequent matches, Rohit scored 10, 3, 26, 28, and 6 before his second-ball duck against Chennai Super Kings. MI vs CSK, IPL 2022: Live Score and Updates Rohit Sharma is struggling as a captain too. Mumbai Indians have got off to their worst start ever in any IPL, having lost all their six matches so far. In the same over, Mumbai Indians suffered a further setback when Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Ishan Kishan, also for a duck. Ishan Kishan was the most expensive buy of the 2022 player auction. He was not named among MI's retained players but the five-time champions bought him back for a staggering Rs 15.25 crore. Ishan Kishan started off well with back-to-back half-centuries. He hit an unbeaten 81 against DC and then followed that up with a 54 against Rajasthan Royals. However, Kishan has since made scores of 14, 26, 3 and 13. In 7 matches so far in IPL 2022, Ishan Kishan has scored only 191 runs, 135 of which came in the first two matches. This has been a hugely disappointing IPL season for both of India's biggest superstars - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Like Rohit, Kohli has also failed to contribute anything of significance with the bat for his team Royal Challengers Bangalore. Against Lucknow Super Giants, Kohli was out for a golden duck - his fourth in the Indian Premier League. In 7 matches this season, Virat Kohli, the most prolific run-scorer in the history of the IPL, has managed only 119 runs with a best of 48 https://www.indiatoday.in/sports/ipl-2022/story/mi-vs-csk-rohit-sharma-falls-for-second-ball-duck-as-mi-captain-s-nightmares-continue-1940330-2022-04-21

A lot has been written about Rebel Wilson and her recent weight loss. The Australian actor lost a considerable amount of weight and even opened up about it with news outlets. She, however, recently called out a publication that claimed she used a diet plan called the ‘Mayr Method’ to lose weight. The 42-year-old took to Instagram stories and wrote: “This was NEVER my diet, please stop writing this stuff.” The article purportedly claimed that Wilson lost 35 kg of weight over the past 18 months by following the Mayr Method diet plan What is the Mayr Method diet? According to Healthline, the Mayr Method plan was developed by Austrian physician Dr Franz Xaver Mayr. It is based on the idea that “improving gut health is key to promoting weight loss”. Deepti Khatuja, head clinical nutritionist at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram told indianexpress.com that it entails mindful eating practices like chewing food thoroughly and avoiding distractions while eating, such as watching TV and using smartphones. “This diet plan is to be followed for 14 days. It instructs the elimination of foods like sugar, caffeine, gluten and dairy. It recommends alkaline foods, and the key is to chew the food 40-60 times. The heaviest meal is to be had as the first meal of the day, with dinner being lightest and eaten early, before 7 pm,” she said. Khatuja added that water is to be consumed between meals, but never with meals. “It emphasises more on fibres, inclusion of nuts and seeds, healthy fats from extra virgin and cold-pressed oils.” Nutritionist Ruchi Sharma, the founder of Eat Fit Repeat concurred and said that food groups that are allowed for individuals following this diet plan include fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, nuts and seeds, healthy fats and healthy beverages. “However, it encourages people to limit the intake of caffeine, gluten, dairy products, processed foods and sugars and unhealthy beverages. All these principles work to help lose weight in a healthy manner. “Major health benefits of the Mayr Method diet plan is that it promotes digestive health and mindful eating, aiding digestion, which in turn promotes weight loss,” she told this outlet. Sharma added that some of the cons of the diet plan include its concept of not drinking water during meals, “as it claims to dilute the enzymes involved in the breakdown of food”. “Additionally, sometimes it feels unnecessarily restrictive, such as restricting the consumption of raw foods after 4 pm and complete restriction of food after 7 pm,” she remarked. Khatuja said there has been no scientific research that gives weight to the efficacy of this diet plan. “Once you stop this kind of diet plan, you tend to regain weight. It can also be expensive for some people. It is important to have a healthy balanced diet along with physical activity of 45 minutes to 1 hours, so as to burn calories,” she suggested. Wilson had previously shared with People magazine that she was eating a high-protein diet. Earlier, she was eating up to “3000 calories most day”, she said, and “would still be hungry”. “So, I’ve really changed to eating a high-protein diet, which is challenging because I didn’t used to eat a lot of meat. I eat fish, salmon, and chicken breast.” The actor said her aim was to achieve an “overall healthy balance”. “I have this state of being, which is not my quote, but I go ‘Nothing is forbidden.’ We’ll be like, ‘Should we get an In-N-Out burger?’ And I’m like, ‘Nothing is forbidden.’ I can go there, I just might eat half of what I used to eat before. You know? And I’ll have a burger, and a few fries, and then you feel fine,” she had said. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/rebel-wilson-mayr-method-lose-weight-diet-plan-7877207/

A Russian tycoon has lambasted the country's "massacre" in Ukraine and called for an end to the "crazy war". Oleg Tinkov wrote in a profanity-littered Instagram post that he did not see "any beneficiary" of the conflict. Mr Tinkov is one of Russia's most well-known entrepreneurs and founded the global online bank Tinkoff Bank and owned the cycling team Tinkoff-Saxo. He is also one of the most high profile Russians to publicly condemn President Vladimir Putin's actions. Two of the country's most prominent oligarchs Mikhail Fridman and Oleg Deripaska have made separate calls for peace, but have stopped short of direct criticism. Mr Fridman, a billionaire banker, has said any personal remarks could be a risk not just to himself but also staff and colleagues. However, the businessman Boris Mints, who worked for the Russian government in the 1990s but was discharged of his political roles four days after Mr Putin took office, has joined Mr Tinkov in voicing direct criticism of the president. Mr Mints, who lives in the UK, is the subject of current legal action by the Kremlin. He told the BBC "every right-thinking person has a duty to speak out against this appalling war and Vladimir Putin's growing authoritarianism". "All of us must do what we can to support Ukrainians suffering from this vicious onslaught, whether in Ukraine or as refugees beyond its borders," he added. Who are the mega-rich Russians facing sanctions? The UK government has sanctioned Mr Tinkov along with many other Russians identified as having close links to the Kremlim. Mr Mints has not been sanctioned. Warning: This story contains language some may find offensive. Mr Tinkov has previously denied having any close relationship with President Putin or the Kremlin. In his Instagram post, Mr Tinkov said 90% of Russians were against the war in Ukraine and added "morons in any country are 10%". "I don't see a SINGLE beneficiary of this insane war! Innocent people and soldiers are dying," Mr Tinkov added. "Waking up with a hangover, the generals realised that they have a shit army. "And how will the army be good, if everything else in the country is shitty and mired in nepotism, sycophancy and servility?" Before Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, Mr Tinkov's wealth had been estimated at more than $4.4bn (£3.4bn). But he has since lost his billionaire status as shares in his bank have plummeted, Forbes reported last month. Switching to English in his post, Mr Tinkov wrote: "Dear 'collective West' please give Mr Putin a clear exit to save his face and stop this massacre. Please be more rational and humanitarian." In a statement, Tinkoff Bank said it would not comment on the "private opinion" of its founder, who stepped down as chairman in 2020, saying he no longer made decisions for the brand started in 2006. Mr Tinkov, who is not currently in Russia, owns about 35% of Cyprus-based TCS Group Holding, whose stable of companies under the Tinkoff brand span sectors from banking and insurance to mobile services. He has been described as a "serial entrepreneur" whose career has seen him go from bike racing, to importing electronics, flogging frozen food, brewing beer, issuing credit cards and then back to bike racing as owner of cycling's Tinkoff-Saxo team. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61163546
