  3. Babusar Pass, the road connecting Gilgit-Baltistan to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and leading to the most famous tourist attraction Babusar Top, has become a death trap for tourists who throng the area during the summer season. Thousands of foreign and local tourist visit the northern areas of the country every year as normalcy has returned to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the back to back military operations in the region. During the last two days, at least five tourists have lost their lives in road accidents, whereas, several others have sustained injuries. On Monday, a tourist van fell deep into a ravine, killing one tourist and injuring 16 others. The van, carrying 17 passengers from Mahrabpur area of Sindh, was going to Gilgit city via Babusar Pass road. Authorities told Dawn that the accident occurred when the van developed a technical issue to its break. They said that the break failed due to excessive use on this sloppy route, resultantly, the van skidded off the road and fell into a ravine. Earlier on Sunday, four people were killed and 12 others injured when a bus carrying tourists plunged into a ravine near the Babusar top area of Gilgit-Baltistan, said rescue sources. Rescue 1122 officials said a woman and a child were also among those killed. All the victims were residents of Thatta, Sindh, the rescuers had told Dawn. The van, carrying 16 tourists, was on the way to Islamabad from Gilgit via Babusar Pass when it skidded off and fell into a deep ravine near Geeta-Das area between Chilas and Babusar Top. The bodies and survivors were shifted to district headquarter hospital Chilas with the help of local volunteers. Hospital sources said that condition of two injured, including the driver of the van, was pronounced as critical. The road, which remains functional only six months a year due to heavy snowfall in the remaining months, has claimed 21 lives so far during the ongoing tourist season. Babusar Pass road remains open from the end of June to October every year, whereas the road remains closed for the rest of year due to heavy snowfall. Local residents said that accidents on Babusar Pass road have become a matter of routine. Faroqi, a resident of Chilas, the district headquarter of Diamer, put the blame on the road and the relevant authorities. He held the inappropriate design of the road and absence of a boundary wall along the road responsible for the accidents. The government authorities, however, put forth other causes of casualties. Diamer Dupty Commissioner Dildar Ahmed Malik said district administration has been taking every possible measure to protect the tourists visiting these areas. The Diamer DC said, "Usually the accidents occur due to lack of awareness in connection with issues being faced by a driver while driving on the mountainous tracks." The road passes through mountainous areas where frequent use of break leads to break fail which results in dangerous accidents, he maintained. Malik said that the district administration has installed signboards along the road, describing instructions for drivers. The DC explained that currently, many locals and foreigners are heading towards Naran-Babusar Pass road to visit Gilgit-Baltistan and Naran, Kaghan areas of KP. He was of the opinion that the non-local drivers do not know enough about the route and how to drive safely on such tracks.
  4. Online music platform SoundCloud has laid off 40 per cent of its staff members in a bid to cut costs and "ensure our path to long-term, independent success", according to a statement from Soundcloud CEO and Founder Alex Ljung on Friday, The Verge reported. The company made the "difficult step to let go of" 173 of its 420 employees "after careful and painful consideration", The Verge quoted Ljung as saying. Ljung, in a blog post shared on the company's website on behalf of himself and co-founder Chief Product Officer Eric Wahlforss, said that the company had more than doubled its revenue over the past year. "However, we need to ensure our path to long-term, independent success. And in order to do this, it requires cost cutting, continued growth of our existing advertising and subscription revenue streams, and a relentless focus on our unique competitive advantage — artists and creators," he said. "By reducing our costs and continuing our revenue growth, we’re on our path to profitability and in control of SoundCloud’s independent future," Ljung added. The company's offices in San Fransisco and London will be closed down, The Verge reported, as SoundCloud has "consolidated the team into two offices: Berlin and New York". The Verge reported that SoundCloud had in January said it may possibly run out of money before the end of the year. However, it landed a $70 million credit line from investors which was used to increase technology and personnel resources, the report said. "The SoundCloud platform listeners and artists love will remain available in more than 190 countries globally," Ljung added towards the end of his post. "SoundCloud will continue to be the place for what’s new, now and next in music... I look forward to sharing more about our future plans in the weeks and months ahead."
  5. DUBAI: Four women in pink remain on standby 12 hours a day, seven days a week, to come to the aid of their “sisters” in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The four — two medics and two drivers — are leading a pilot project for a women-only pink ambulance service that aims to expedite medical care by helping patients feel more at ease. “In our society, Arab Muslim society, when patients call for help, they want privacy and they want to feel comfortable,” said Bashayer al-Rimm, an emergency medical technician (EMT). “A male first responder can and of course does respond to all patients,” she said. “But the logic behind this was, ‘How can we make women feel more comfortable?’, to speed up giving them medical care.” The government-run Women Responders unit operating in the district of Deira has had 25 callouts since it launched three weeks ago, none of them major emergencies. Ten years ago, Dubai launched “Ladies and Families Taxis,” a pink fleet of cabs driven by women and serving women and their children. The service is still available, and po[CENSORED]r, across Dubai.

  9. A teenager was arrested by British police after a spate of acid attacks across northeast London left at least one person with life-changing injuries and critically injured several others. Metropolitan Police say the 90-minute spree of five attacks began late Thursday. Authorities have appealed to the public for more information on the perpetrators. Two men on a motorcycle tossed a noxious substance into the face of a 32-year-old moped driver and then jumped on his vehicle and drove away. The pattern was repeated. Police said on Friday that the injuries to one man in his mid-20s are considered to be “life changing.” The assaults come just days after a separate incident in which a man appeared in court accused of throwing acid at an aspiring model and her cousin.
  10. ISLAMABAD: While Pakistan is yet to form a group of experts to decide setting up of the exact number and types of special economic zones (SEZs) along the CPEC route in the first phase, China has notified the government of forming the group. During the last meeting of the Pak-China Joint Cooperation Committee (PCJCC) held in Beijing, setting up of nine SEZs had been prioritised. It had been decided that the two countries would set up expert groups to deliberate how to build the priority zones. Participating in the concluding session of Pakistan-China industrial dialogue on Thursday, head of the Chinese Industrial Experts Group, Mr Li Yuan, asked Pakistan to expedite forming the experts’ group, and emphasised on devising long-term cooperation mechanism to select priority sector and synergise policies for SEZs. Where is the experts group, asks Chinese delegation Mr Yuan informed the Pakistani side that China has already built four special economic zones followed by developing 14 coastal cities, and subsequently, 14 industrial zones were developed. The proposed prioritised SEZs by Pakistan are to be reviewed by expert groups of the two countries for development in the initial phase, he said, addig that these SEZs may follow either Chinese or Pakistani standards to attract investment. Speaking on the occasion, Board of Investment Chairman Dr Miftah Ismail informed the Chinese side that Pakistan plans to establish a total of 46 SEZs, and the experts’ group will soon be nominated to deliberate on how to build the zones. China has rich experience in developing zones and Pakistan can learn much from Chinese experience, he said. During the concluding session, presentations were made by the governments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, highlighting the potential of agricultural and horticultural products for exports. Representatives of Gilgit-Baltistan highlighted the mineral potential and location advantages sitting exactly on the ancient ‘Silk Route’ being gateway for central, east and South Asia. Additionally, the zone has huge comparative advantage for manufacturing and processing of minerals, fresh fruits and vegetables, wood, herbs and trout fish. The ‘Maqpoon Dass’ SEZ can also act as logistic hub of the North, he said. The representatives of Azad Jammu and Kashmir highlighted their territory’s potential in water and mineral resources and incentives being provided to foreign investors. The potential of proposed Mirpur SEZ in terms of its connectivity with highway, railways and airport as well as the expected industries to be set up in this zone based on local endowment was also deliberated through the presentation. BoI Secretary, Azher Ali Choudhry enumerated the main features of the incentive package for the identified priority SEZs and invited the Chinese to convey their viewpoint, if any, for further discussion. He emphasised that Chinese companies have huge opportunities to relocate their businesses to these priority SEZs. Pakistan is expecting feedback of Chinese experts on this visit.
