  3. The UK must "push the limits of innovative warfare" or risk being left behind amid a "darkening geopolitical picture", the new head of the British Army will warn during his first public speech in the role. General Mark Carleton-Smith will make an address at a warfare think-tank conference in London on Wednesday, during which he will unveil plans for troops to begin testing prototype drones and unmanned cargo vehicles. The Autonomous Warrior experiment will take place in November in a bid to limit dangers to troops in conflict zones, with new drone technology boasting enhanced long-range scanners to be put through its paces. Also set to be tested are driverless cargo vehicles, which have been earmarked for use during what is known as the last-mile resupply - when vehicles are sent to provide soldiers with food, fuel and ammunition on the final approach to a combat encounter. Gen Carleton-Smith will tell the Royal United Services Institute event: "We live in exceptionally unstable times and the world has never been more unpredictable. "We need a more proactive, threat-based approach to our capability planning, including placing some big bets on those technologies that we judge may offer exponential advantage. "Given the pace of the race, to fall behind today is to cede an almost unquantifiable advantage from which it might be impossible to recover." UK troops will be supported in the November exercise by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, US army, Ministry of Defence, and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. It will last four weeks, with a battle group from 1 Armed Infantry Brigade providing the soldiers and executing command and control. Speaking ahead of the conference, defence minister Mark Lancaster has stressed how important the new technology could prove to be. "Our armed forces continue to push the limits of innovative warfare to ensure that we stay ahead of any adversaries or threats faced on the battlefield," he said. "Autonomous Warrior sets an ambitious vision for army operations in the 21st century as we integrate drones, unmanned vehicles and personnel into a world-class force for decades to come."

  8. Rapper XXXTentacion has been shot dead in south Florida Broward County Sheriff confirmed that the 20-year-old artist had died following a report by US celebrity news website TMZ, which said he had been gunned down by two hooded assailants after leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, north of Miami, on Monday. An eyewitness told the outlet that the rapper - whose most recent album debuted at number one in the US back in March - had been seen "lifeless with no pulse" after the incident at just before 4pm local time. In a later statement released on Twitter, the sheriff's office said: "The adult male that was taken to the hospital has been pronounced dead. "The adult male victim has been confirmed as 20 year old Jahseh Onfroy aka rapper #XXXTentacion." The fatal shooting came just months after the victim - real name Jahseh Onfroy - was released from house arrest in relation to a charge of domestic violence against his pregnant girlfriend. He had been awaiting trial to answer to the allegations, which stemmed from an incident last October, but had been let out so that he could go on tour. Following the charges, Onfroy was removed from certain Spotify playlists as part of a new policy by the music streaming platform to address "artist conduct".

  12. A Tory MP has labelled claims a "Brexit dividend" will help fund a cash injection for the NHS as "tosh", with Theresa May's pledge of more money for the health service coming under scrutiny. The prime minister said the NHS will receive an extra £20bn a year in real terms funding (once inflation is taken into account) by 2024, an average increase of 3.4% every year for the next five years. But the government's decision to link part of the extra money to the infamous Vote Leave pledge to spend the money Britain sends to European Union on the NHS instead has provoked much comment. The totemic claim - widely questioned by experts during the 2016 referendum - that we send £350m a week to the EU formed an integral part of the Brexit campaign's clarion call to "take back control" from Brussels. Mrs May told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "Some people may remember seeing a figure on the side of a bus a while back of £350m a week in cash. "Well, I can tell you what I am announcing will mean that in 2023-24, there will be about £600m a week in cash, more in cash, going into the NHS." While many have welcomed news of the extra money, critics - including some within the PM's own party - poured scorn on the "Brexit dividend" characterisation, saying there was no such thing. They argue the economic damage of leaving the EU will far outweigh any money we save in payments to Brussels. One Tory MP was particularly scathing in her assessment, labelling the claim "tosh". Sarah Wollaston, who is chair of the health and social care select committee and a former GP, said it "treats the public as fools". She added: "Sad to see Govt slide to populist arguments rather than evidence on such an important issue. "This will make it harder to have a rational debate about the 'who & how' of funding & sharing this fairly." Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, also dismissed the term in a series of tweets: Labour's shadow housing secretary John Healey told Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme: "This isn't a pledge that's credible if the prime minister can't show how it's being funded. "Claiming some bogus Brexit dividend is clearly something that doesn't exist - and she's only saying that because she's got her arm twisted up her back by her Cabinet Brexit hardliners." There have also been calls for more details on how the pledge will be paid for.

  14. A huge fire has broken out at Glasgow School of Art, just four years after it was severely damaged in a blaze. "There is a fire at the Mackintosh Building. The fire brigade are currently on scene," posted the Glasgow School of Art's Twitter account around midnight, 40 minutes after firefighters were called to the scene. More than 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines are tackling the blaze. Around two hours after the fire was reported, a spokesperson for the fire service said the blaze is "well developed" and firefighters are "working hard" to extinguish it. Video footage posted on Twitter shows large flames and smoke billowing into the night sky, as flashing lights from emergency vehicles can be seen in the background. There are no reported casualties and nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution. In the early hours of Saturday morning, the fire spread to the nearby O2 ABC building on Sauchiehall Street. Images and videos posted online shows the roof of the venue hall collapsing and the entire top of the building ablaze. Jennifer Crammond, who lives around two miles away in the West End of Glasgow, is able to see the blaze from her home. "There's loads of white smoke and it's extending towards another building," she told Sky News. She said she thought the fire "did not look contained" and that it had gotten "worse over the last 45 minutes". Her sister Elizabeth, an art graduate now based in England, studied at an institution with ties to the School and told Sky News: "It's quite distressing to know that the School of Art, a place I hold quite dear to my heart, is basically gone completely." She described how her sister video-called her and the pair could hear an explosion come from the building. "You could see even from her window the smoke is almost volcanic and it's taken over Glasgow," she said. "It's a worldwide piece of art history. I remember going there myself and now it's definitely gone. "We are devastated because we can remember what it was like and are now seeing it go down to crumbles." The School is located in a busy area of the city, one that is po[CENSORED]r with students and tourists. It is surrounded by bars and nightlife spots which were packed on Friday night. Firefighters were called at around 11.20pm on Friday. Firefighters are on the scene, with a spokesperson commenting: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently in attendance at a fire in the Mackintosh Building of The Glasgow School of Art. "Operations control mobilised a number of fire engines to the scene after the call came in at 11.19pm on Friday, 15 June. "Firefighters are currently tackling the fire." By 4am, deputy chief officer Iain Bushell released a statement saying: "This is an extremely challenging and complex incident, but the response and professionalism of our firefighters has been exceptional. "The fire has taken hold several properties including the 02 ABC nightclub causing extensive damage. "This will be a prolonged incident and crews will remain on the scene as they work to prevent further fire spread and damage." He urged residents in nearby buildings to remain indoors and to keep their windows closed. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Twitter: "This is clearly an extremely serious situation. My first thoughts tonight are for the safety of people - but my heart also breaks for Glasgow's beloved @GSofA. "Once again, we are indebted to the bravery of our firefighters and other emergency services." Shadow Scottish minister Paul Sweeney tweeted: "Devastated that a major fire has broken out at the Glasgow School of Art tonight. "The Mack has been undergoing restoration since the last devastating fire in 2014. @scotfire_glasgo are doing everything they can to salvage the most architecturally important building in Glasgow." Scottish Secretary David Mundell said the Government "stands ready to help" the Glasgow School of Art "financially or otherwise". He tweeted: "Devastated to hear news of fire at Glasgow School of Art. Only fortnight since I was there to see restoration. "My heart goes out to all those who had worked so hard on that. @UKGovScotland stands ready to help, financially or otherwise @GSofA" The building was undergoing restoration after being damaged by a fire in May 2014. It was due to reopen in 2019. The building was designed by artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built between 1897 and 1909. Buildings including the O2 ABC have suffered "extensive damage" as flames and smoke poured into the night sky from the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) building. A restoration project, which was set to cost between £20m and £35m, had been returning the famous art school to its former glory after a devastating fire in 2014, with Brad Pitt and Peter Capaldi among those lending their support. The "extensive" fire spread to all floors of the building including the multi-million pound restoration work, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deputy assistant Peter Heath said. Speaking on Saturday morning, Mr Heath said there were still pockets of fire in the building but it was not spreading. He said fresh fire crews were being deployed to relieve firefighters who have been fighting the blaze all night.

  17. The captain of a charter boat says he was "shocked" after a 23-stone porbeagle shark was caught and then washed onto his vessel. It was believed to be one of the biggest of its kind caught off Welsh waters. Following what was described as a "long, epic battle", angler Matthew Burrett reeled in the 324lb fish, which was around 8ft-long, during a trip off the coast of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire. Skipper Craig Deans said: "I've never seen anything that big before, although I'm sure there are bigger fish out there. "When I saw the size of it, I was pretty shocked. We didn't really see how big it was until it was brought up alongside the boat." He said the group struggled to get the creature onto the vessel. Mr Deans told Wales Online: "At one point it even jumped out of the water - like when you see Great Whites jumping out and attacking a seal. "We tried for a while to get it onto the boat, but we weren't able to - even though we've got all the right equipment and a purpose-built boat. "Luckily, there was a big swell and that washed the fish onto the boat." The charter company has a strict catch and release policy where they use barb-free hooks and a special hook extraction tool to try to ensure the pain-free release of the shark. Mr Deans said on Facebook: "After a long, epic battle this 324lb porbeagle fell to Matthew Burrett. After a few pictures the fish was released to go on her way." He went on: "For anyone concerned, these sharks are extremely well looked after. "The boats that fish for them are purpose-built to make it easy to bring them on board, measure, tag and release them. "It all happens very quickly and every shark is released alive."

  20. A teenager is fighting for his life after being stabbed at a McDonald's. The 16-year-old was attacked at the fast food restaurant on Ravenswood Avenue in Ipswich at about 7.30pm on Wednesday. It is the third stabbing in the town over the past two weeks. He has suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital. Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack, Suffolk police said. It comes after a man in his 20s was stabbed more than 10 times in his torso and legs on Monday. The attack on the victim, whose condition has been described as serious but stable, was not being treated as linked to the fatal stabbing of Tavis Spencer-Aitkens, 17, on 2 June. More police are being deployed in Suffolk following the attacks. "This is the early stages of a live investigation where we are already managing a significant number of enquiries," detective chief superintendent Simon Parkes said.
