Happy New Year! 2022 is here — and a new year brings new possibilities, new opportunities, along with new demands. Though with COVID-19's Omicron variant wreaking havoc around the world and about to kickstart a third wave in India, maybe the best thing we can hope for is to stay safe inside our homes. Once again. Everything old is new again — and that also applies to our list. The staff at Gadgets 360 has a few ideas of new gadgets they would like to own in 2022. And there are overlaps with those from last year. iPhone and next-gen gaming consoles are the most recurring items, except folks are jumping forward a model with the former, from iPhone 12 to iPhone 13. They are followed by laptops, monitors, and smart TV devices. What gadgets do you have on your new year's wishlist? Tell us on Twitter @Gadgets360 or in the comments section below. Abhinav Lal, VR headset I've been saying this for the past two years, but it still holds true — since I haven't bought one yet. The only gadget on my wishlist this year is a VR headset. And once again, I've no idea when I'm going to take the plunge, or which model I'm going to buy. What's life without a little mystery? Aditya Nath Jha, MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Max I have been a MacBook owner ever since I got serious about my online work. Time saved is money earned, I learned this the hard way over the past few years. Having the absolute best machine to work on certainly helps as it saves minutes and sometimes even hours from your tasks, when you consider the accumulated time over a long period. I currently use a MacBook Air M1. But as I keep using it further, I have realised I need a bigger screen and a better speaker experience if I am going to use a laptop as my primary work machine. The 16-inch MacBook Pro model which was launched last year with the top-of-the-line M1 Max chip is something that screamed business to me the moment I saw it first in Apple's presentation. For sure my current laptop is great, but the smaller screen can be straining at times. It might be tough to buy the 16-inch MacBook Pro in the foreseeable future but if Apple decides on any price cuts or promo offers, then I might dive in one more time. Buy: MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Max Aditya Shenoy and David Delima, MacBook Air M1 Aditya: MacBook Air has been my primary machine for the past four years and it has been super productive. I really appreciate the compact form factor bundled with the excellent battery life and capable performance. And with the new MacBook Air M1, Apple has really improved the performance. It's still compact, and thanks to the new processor, has become more powerful and efficient. I think the MacBook Air M1 is just the perfect replacement for my 2017 MacBook Air. Though I will only do it if there are good discounts in 2022. David: The M1 MacBook Air was the first time I was excited about an ARM-based laptop, and that's because developers began to start taking ARM computers seriously. Well, that, and the ridiculous battery life and performance they offer. Apple's build quality is already excellent, and these laptops should enjoy software support for years. Seeing the improvements Apple brought with its M1 Pro and M1 Max processors last year, I'm very inclined to wait and see whether the company comes out with an updated MacBook Air this year — M2 maybe? — and that's why I haven't yet bought an M1 model. Intel today announced its expanded lineup of the 12th-Gen processors at CES 2022. With this generation, it's showing off its computing prowess, especially with the new mobile processors headlined by the Intel Core i9-12900HK. Intel is calling it the fastest mobile processor ever. See also: What is Intel Hyper-Threading? Intel has taken the wraps off of multiple products for desktop, mobile, and ultra-mobile, under multiple series and watts, all built on the Intel 7 process. It is also launching its long-anticipated Arc graphics, internally called Alchemist. Intel 12th-Gen H-series mobile processors Intel had revealed some of its desktop processors in the 12th-Gen lineup a few weeks prior to today. However, the focus on today's reveal is on the 12th-Gen mobile processors. There are three tiers to Intel's 12th-Gen mobile CPUs — the 45W H-series for enthusiasts, the 28W P-Series for thin-and-light performance machines, and the 15W and 9W U-Series for everything else. The H-series is the one Intel is releasing today. The 12th-Gen Core H-series lineup has eight SKUs for now, including the i9-12900HK that is being heavily featured in new CES laptop launches. Intel also says it is the most powerful mobile CPU right now, which may be a taller claim depending upon how AMD's new offerings fare. Intel has today also revealed the full desktop lineup of the 12th-Gen processors. The company showed off its new Laminar coolers. These will arrive in three models: the Laminar RH1 for i9 chips, Laminar RM1 for i7, i5, and i3 chips, and the Laminar RS1 for Pentium and Celeron CPUs. Intel also revealed a whole lot of desktop processors today. The top of the line CPU lineup is the i9 series, with 16-core models that top out at 202W of power with the Turbo mode. Also on the list are the new i7, i5, and i3 CPUs. Intel also revealed its long-rumored graphics processor — Intel Arc. Previously dubbed Intel Alchemist, Arc will have over 50 new mobile and desktop designs from major companies such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, MSI, and others. Relevant: What is Intel XeSS? Intel is promising some solid features here, including hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing, previously announced Intel XeSS support, and Intel Deep Link technology. Intel is teaming up with 505 Games and Kojima Productions to optimize Death Stranding Director's Cut for Intel Arc and Intel XeSS. There's also wider developer support for Intel's graphical efforts now, with multiple studios on board, including Codemasters, PUBG Studios, Ubisoft, and more.

BlackBerry will end support for all of its classic smartphones starting next January, as the company updated its support page saying that legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier, will not be available yet. January 4, 2022. This means that customers using BlackBerry devices running these legacy services and software will no longer receive software patches to ensure that the carrier or Wi-Fi connection continues to work, and this will include data, phone calls, SMS, and 911 functionality for US users, but BlackBerry smartphones will not be affected. that run on Android. Before the iPhone era that started sometime in 2007, BlackBerry phones were very po[CENSORED]r among users along with Nokia phones, and BlackBerry launched its first handheld device in the form of a two-way pager in 1999. By the second half of the 21st century, its product lineup included smartphones such as the BlackBerry Curve Bold and BlackBerry Pearl, among others, and not only did the classic QWERTY keyboard, but applications such as BlackBerry Messenger popped up in BlackBerry phones. In 2008, the company introduced the BlackBerry Storm - the first full-touch screen device to use the iPhone launched in 2007, but the sluggish performance brought BlackBerry back to full QWERTY phones even for touchscreen devices that were later launched. At the time, CEOs of RIM (the company that made BlackBerry phones) didn't see old iPhones or Android phones as a threat to BlackBerry devices. Instead, they made jokes about the Apple smartphone because they believed that consumers, who were essentially businesses and business professionals, would never want a smartphone with a touchscreen and a virtual keyboard. World, BlackBerry market fell.

The era of the software-defined vehicle has dawned, upending the established dynamic that a car depreciates once it leaves the lot. Instead it's just the starting point for the car's future functionality. Influenced by the evolution of consumer electronics applications and fueled by the relentless improvements in technology, tools and standards, the automotive industry is entering a new era that is redefining how we think of automobiles. Consumers are interested in higher levels of automated safety features, while a concerted move towards electrified powertrains and infotainment technologies is delivering a smartphone-like experience in the car. The idea of taking a vehicle to the dealership to be hooked up to a computer to gain diagnostic information or update software and settings is becoming primitive. Instead, the software-defined vehicle promises a far more polished, rewarding experience of car ownership. Consumers will get in their car to drive to work and, just like the software updates they're used to on their smartphones, they'll receive a notification that the steering system has been upgraded to give more precise handling, the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) has a new capability to aid their highway driving or that their vehicle's range has just been increased based on analysis of thousands of hours of battery cycles. Or perhaps they'll be given or offered an entirely new feature that was never part of their original purchase decision, yet one they'll grow to rely upon. That will cement their brand loyalty - at least until another manufacturer implements a superior solution. The developer advantage Software infrastructure companies see a huge potential for software-defined functions in the car. For example, Stefano Marzani, principal specialist, solutions architect, autonomous vehicles at Amazon Web Services, sees the software-defined vehicle as a simple definition with enormous potential. “It’s a standard compute platform for vehicles with everything that standards imply,” he said. Marzani recently participated in an Arm DevSummit 2021 panel discussion with me and other industry experts. He compared the new design approach to the methodologies used in mobile development: “So you develop an application on your computer or Mac, and then you just deploy it on iPhones or Android phones, and it just works. The developer doesn't doubt that it is working.” As more automotive functions become defined by software, the more opportunities arise throughout the whole value chain of the automotive industry. These include new business and bill-of-materials efficiencies by having software-defined functions rather than everything being hardware specific. There's also new potential revenue from either services or applications or even upgrades to the vehicle. When the car leaves the dealer's lot, for example, you don't end the relationship between the automotive manufacturer and the consumer; it's just beginning. That’s because there are going to be these remote touchpoints through software upgrades or new services that are going to be available to the consumer. Managing complexity But before we get there, we have to nail the engineering, according to Martin Schleicher, head of software strategy at Continental. Asked on our panel whether it's engineering or software development that's more important for the future of the software-defined vehicle, he said: “To be able to deliver software updates to consumers, we need to get the engineering part right. The complexity of the electronics – in particular, software – has been growing so heavily and this is expected to continue compared to other elements. This creates a big challenge of managing this complexity. The software-defined vehicle and the elements that Stefano explained earlier are mandatory for us – for the whole industry. In fact, the whole supply chain has to be able to deliver the software continuously, with high quality, and update it.” Pierre Olivier, CTO of LeddarTech, said the consumers are calling the shots, based on their mobile phone experiences, and one harbinger of where software-defined vehicle design is headed can be seen in infotainment. “Five years ago, everybody added discrete (infotainment) systems (to vehicles), and now consumers are demanding Android Auto and similar experiences in compliance with the standards, so it becomes a mandatory feature,” he said. It's not just the smartphone experience that's important here; it's also the smartphone platform approach. Until the mid-2000s, a cellphone's hardware and software were coupled on the production line, with software-only updated if a significant bug was identified. It meant that annual cellphone upgrades were big business, just as trading in your car for the latest model was the only way to access new features and enhancements. Smartphones changed this dynamic by decoupling hardware and software. The smartphone became a hardware

Many inventions in recent years have been computer related or computer implemented – whether in the form of apps for smart phones or tablets, software to be run on laptops or desktop computers, systems for controlling the operation of machinery, or internet based ideas – and there is a common misconception that all software, and many computer related inventions or ideas, cannot be patented. This is not the case. The statute that governs the patent system in the UK contains a list of subject matter or types of invention for which patents are not available. That list includes anything which consists of: a discovery, scientific theory or mathematical method; a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work or any other aesthetic creation whatsoever; a scheme, rule or method for performing a mental act, playing a game or doing business, or a program for a computer; the presentation of information The reference to a program for a computer in this list would at first sight suggest that computer programs, and hence many computer related inventions cannot be protected using the patent system. However, the situation is actually more complex than this. The next statement in the relevant part of the statute says that things in the list are excluded from being able to be protected using the patent system “only to the extent that the patent or application for a patent relates to that thing as such.” This statement is key. It means that if the underlying invention is not excluded subject matter, even if it is implemented by computer software, the possibility of being able to protect it using the patent system is still there. A piece of software is really nothing more than a series of method steps that happen to be written in a form that can be processed by a computer. If the method relates to subject matter that would be patentable, save for the fact that it happens to be written in such a manner as to allow the method to be run by a computer, then that method is not excluded subject matter and so there is scope for being able to use the patent system to provide protection for the software. When examining patent applications relating to computer implemented inventions, the approach taken by the Patent Office uses a test set out in a Court of Appeal judgment and usually referred to as the Aerotel test. The test involves identifying the actual contribution made by the invention compared to known arrangements, asking whether that contribution falls within one or more of the excluded subject matter areas listed above, and checking whether the contribution is actually technical in nature. There will be situations where a computer related invention is not able to pass this test, either because its contribution falls exclusively within the excluded categories mentioned above or because it is not technical in nature. However, there are also many situations where inventions that happen to be performed by a computer pass the test and can be protected. This covers the position in the UK, but regulations in other jurisdictions are different, some being more relaxed and others being more restrictive, and in Europe the situation is similar to the UK (although the test used to decide whether or not an invention is excluded is different).

Whether you're wondering if a game or software program will run on your computer, or you're looking to upgrade it to give it some extra power or storage, the starting point is always going to be knowing what you're working with: what hardware is inside your PC? Looking on the box for a list of specifications won't be possible if you've already ditched it, and if it's an older model it may not even be listed on the manufacturer or retailer's site any longer. It's especially difficult to find out the specification of a particular model when you consider that computers are routinely sold with multiple SKUs, each with small differences in their core components. A single laptop model might be available with a choice of AMD or Intel processors, and it might have differing amounts of storage or RAM - these days, they might not even run the same operating system. The good news is checking the spec is easy, as we'll outline below. How do I find out my computer's specifications? In Windows 10 this is very simple, and possible through the Device Manager. You can access this by right-clicking the Windows icon in the bottom left and choosing Device Manager, or typing its name into the search field at the bottom of the screen. Now click on the downward arrows next to each entry to begin gleaning info about your computer's internal hardware. Another good place to look is in the System settings, which are accessible by right-clicking the Windows icon or typing System in the search bar. Scroll down to the About section to learn your computer's name, processor and amount of installed memory. Scroll down a bit further to learn what operating system you are running. What graphics card and CPU does my PC have? If you're happy to download a small app, we recommend Piriform's Speccy. There's a free version with no support, but it analyzes any computer running Windows and gives you a summary of the specs, including your motherboard and neat monitor's make and model, your hard drives and any USB-connected storage and even their temperatures. What graphics card and CPU does my PC have? 1x1 pixel What graphics card is in my PC? In any version of Windows, open the Control Panel (or search for it in the start menu if you can't find it), then search for Device Manager. Now open Display adapters in the tree. You will see what graphics card your PC or laptop is using. You can expand the Processors branch to see how many cores your CPU has, too. Bear in mind that some may be 'virtual' cores, where a processor supports Hyper-threading for example. What graphics card and CPU does my PC have? Checking the specifications in older versions of Windows If you are using a Windows 8 PC, instead hover over the top right hand corner of your screen to bring up the Charms. Then choose Settings > PC info. This is a shortcut that takes you to Control Panel > System and Security > System. In Windows XP or Windows 7, you have to work a little harder. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties (in Windows XP, this is called System Properties). Look for System in the Properties window (Computer in XP). Whichever version of Windows you are using, you'll now be able to see your PC- or laptop's processor, memory and OS. Processor tells you the speed of your CPU, and the specific processor model. The entry for Memory (RAM) tells you how much RAM you have. More is better, but if you have a 32-bit operating system, you can use only up to 4GB of RAM. Finally, the entry for System type will tell you what version of Windows you are running. Newer versions of Windows will also tell you if you have a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. The latter is far more common. Here's how to find out the number of cores your CPU has.
