There are a myriad of things to do when you first start up your shiny new Android phone. You have to add your accounts, set up security features, and get rid of all that bloatware. At some point in the future, Verizon customers might find that bloatware sneaks back onto the device, and it could bring its friends. The carrier has reportedly been shopping a plan to advertisers that would include pushing bloatware apps to phones it has already sold. Verizon activates millions of Android-powered phones and tablets every quarter, so the opportunity for the carrier to make some extra cash is substantial. The idea was pitched to retailers and finance companies starting late last year. According to a report from Advertising Age, Verizon was shopping around a rate of $1-2 per device. That’s tens of millions in new revenue every year for very little work on the carrier’s end. It would, however, have to deal with an almost inevitable PR nightmare. The instant the first sponsored app shows up on a phone, people will rightly be up in arms. Bloatware on a new phone is nothing new — it has been an ongoing issue ever since the first Android phones landed on carriers. Verizon has been an especially heavy abuser of application pre-loading by including its own duplicative services like Messaging+, Go90 video streaming, Slacker Radio, and VZ Navigator. In years past, you’d have to stare at bloatware in your app drawer forever because they were on the system partition, but in Android 4.0 Google added the ability to disable system apps that can’t be uninstalled. The answer, obviously, is for Verizon to just push more bloat to the phone, right? This isn’t the first time carriers have toyed with the idea of pushing sponsored content to phones after selling them. A few years ago both Verizon and T-Mobile were in hot water for pre-loading a service called DT Ignite that could be used to install such apps remotely in the background. T-Mobile eventually backed off, but Verizon has still been including the service on phones. In fact, the Verizon Galaxy S7 recently had DT Ignite added in a system update. Could this be part of the carrier’s advertising plan? Apps delivered in this way should be uninstallable, but it would still be quite an annoyance; like pulling weeds. As soon as you get rid of the junk, another app could show up. When you consider many of these phones cost you hundreds of dollars (plus what you’re paying for service), the idea that Verizon would start pushing additional junk software on you to make a few extra bucks is ludicrous. Verizon has yet to respond to requests for comment. Hopefully cooler heads prevailed and the carrier opted not to pursue this plan. However, it looks like the tools are in place to start pushing sponsored apps to you at any time.

Land Rover’s calling this a teaser shot of the new Discovery, but it’s not, because unlike a normal, tedious teaser shot, we can actually see something meaningful. This is the face of the all-new Land Rover Discovery. Stood next to its ancestors, it’s clear we’ve got a less bluff, more rakish and ‘designer’ look for Disco 5. There’s hints of Evoque, Discovery Sport, and a whole lot more Range Rover going on. In fact, it’s only a set of slimmer door mirrors away from being identical to 2014’s Discovery Vision concept car, as showcased at the New York Motor Show. It’s square-jawed and really rather handsome, but also far crisper and more modern than its predecessor. And that’s a proper TG favourite of a car – a hard act to follow. Besides trick-looking LED headlights and a stance that appears more Savile Row than Sahara Desert, we know that this Disco’s supported by Land Rover’s aluminium platform, currently in service underpinning the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. So, there should be a mighty weight saving on the cards versus the current car’s twin-chassis set-up, which is good news for the turbocharged Ingenium engines doubtless employed hauling it along. Land Rover’s also confirmed the Discovery will keep its seven-seat capability. Over to design boss Gerry McGovern for the soundbite: “New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV.” So, what else is likely? The Discovery Vision concept tellingly used an altogether more minimalist cabin, with touchscreens aplenty replacing the chunky switchgear of the venerable Discovery 4. Judging by the front of the production Discovery 5, much of that will carry over to this car, though we’ll find out much more when the car’s other three sides are revealed on 28 September.

US President Barack Obama has cancelled a meeting with controversial Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who had earlier called him a "son of a whore". Mr Duterte was responding to the US president's promise to raise the issue of drug-related extra-judicial killings in the Philippines at their meeting. The Philippine leader, known for his colourful language, has insulted prominent figures before, but this time it has had diplomatic consequences. He has now said he regrets the remark. "While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret that it came across as a personal attack on the US president," a statement by his office said. Duterte: From 'Punisher' to president Some of Duterte's most contentious quotes What's the point of Asean? In the past, President Duterte has called Pope Francis the "son of a whore", US Secretary of State John Kerry "crazy" and recently referred to the US ambassador to the Philippines a "gay son of a whore". Both he and President Obama are in Laos for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit. Duterte's apology: Analysis by Karishma Vaswani in Laos Mr Duterte has been forced to apologise for offensive comments before, but this is the first time he has had to confront the reality of his outlandish behaviour on the international stage It is the president's first overseas trip - an opportunity that many leaders would have used to cement ties with neighbouring countries and superpowers like China and the US. Instead Mr Duterte has spent the morning dampening down the controversy he created. At the heart of this is the fact that Mr Duterte isn't used to being told what to do; and that he likes to display machismo and bravado, which plays well to his domestic audience. But when he sits down for serious discussions with his Asean counterparts over the next couple of days, they'll be looking for Asian discretion and subtlety, not diplomacy Duterte-style. How the row escalated Mr Obama, who flew to Laos after attending the G20 meeting in Hangzhou, China, had been set to raise concerns about human rights abuses in the Philippines. But speaking in Manila on Monday before he left for Laos, Mr Duterte bristled at the suggestion, saying the Philippines "has long ceased to be a colony". "Putang ina, I will swear at you in that forum," he then said, using a Tagalog phrase for "son of a whore" or "son of a bitch". Mr Obama initially appeared to play down the insult, calling his Philippine counterpart a "colourful character" and saying he had asked his aides to work out if this is "a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations". His aides later cancelled the talks. Mr Obama's last scheduled trip to Asia as president has not been without incident: he was also caught up in a protocol row with hosts China over his arrival in Hangzhou. In his comments on Monday, President Duterte pledged to continue with his anti-drugs campaign that has led to the killing of 2,400 suspected drug dealers and users in the Philippines since he took office in June. "Many will die, plenty will be killed until the last pusher is out of the streets... until the [last] drug manufacturer is killed we will continue," he said. Duterte accuses judges of drugs links The woman who kills drug dealers for a living The UN has repeatedly condemned Mr Duterte's policies as a violation of human rights. In August, two UN human rights experts said Mr Duterte's directive for police and the public to kill suspected drug traffickers amounted to "incitement to violence and killing, a crime under international law". This round of Asean talks comes against the backdrop of tensions over China's territorial ambitions in the South China Sea - the Philippines and the US are key players in that debate.

Tiny particles of pollution have been discovered inside samples of brain tissue, according to new research. Suspected of toxicity, the particles of iron oxide could conceivably contribute to diseases like Alzheimer's - though evidence for this is lacking. The finding - described as "dreadfully shocking" by the researchers - raises a host of new questions about the health risks of air pollution. Many studies have focused on the impact of dirty air on the lungs and heart. Now this new research provides the first evidence that minute particles of what is called magnetite, which can be derived from pollution, can find their way into the brain. Earlier this year the World Health Organisation warned that air pollution was leading to as many as three million premature deaths every year. Tracing origins The estimate for the UK is that 50,000 people die every year with conditions linked to polluted air. The research was led by scientists at Lancaster University and is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The team analysed samples of brain tissue from 37 people - 29 who had lived and died in Mexico City, a notorious pollution hotspot, and who were aged from 3 to 85. The other 8 came from Manchester, were aged 62-92 and some had died with varying severities of neurodegenerative disease. The lead author of the research paper, Prof Barbara Maher, has previously identified magnetite particles in samples of air gathered beside a busy road in Lancaster and outside a power station. She suspected that similar particles may be found in the brain samples, and that is what happened. "It's dreadfully shocking. When you study the tissue you see the particles distributed between the cells and when you do a magnetic extraction there are millions of particles, millions in a single gram of brain tissue - that's a million opportunities to do damage." Further study revealed that the particles have a distinctive shape which provides a crucial clue to their origin. Magnetite can occur naturally in the brain in tiny quantities but the particles formed that way are distinctively jagged. By contrast, the particles found in the study were not only far more numerous but also smooth and rounded - characteristics that can only be created in the high temperatures of a vehicle engine or braking systems. Prof Maher said: "They are spherical shapes and they have little crystallites around their surfaces, and they occur with other metals like platinum which comes from catalytic converters. "So for the first time we saw these pollution particles inside the human brain. "It's a discovery finding. It's a whole new area to investigate to understand if these magnetite particles are causing or accelerating neurodegenerative disease." For every one natural magnetite particle identified, the researchers found about 100 of the pollution-derived ones. The results did not show a straightforward pattern. While the Manchester donors, especially those with neurodegenerative conditions, had elevated levels of magnetite, the same or higher levels were found in the Mexico City victims. The highest level was found in a 32-year-old Mexican man who had been killed in a traffic accident. Disease risk? Dubbed "nanospheres", the particles are less than 200 nanometres in diameter - by comparison, a human hair is at least 50,000 nanometres thick. While large particles of pollution such as soot can be trapped inside the nose, smaller types can enter the lungs and even smaller ones can cross into the bloodstream. But nanoscale particles of magnetite are believed to be small enough to pass from the nose into the olfactory bulb and then via the nervous system into the frontal cortex of the brain. Prof David Allsop, a specialist in Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, is a co-author of the study and also at Lancaster University. He said that pollution particles "could be an important risk factor" for these conditions. "There is no absolutely proven link at the moment but there are lots of suggestive observations - other people have found these pollution particles in the middle of the plaques that accumulate in the brain in Alzheimer's disease so they could well be a contributor to plaque formation. "These particles are made out of iron and iron is very reactive so it's almost certainly going to do some damage to the brain. It's involved in producing very reactive molecules called reaction oxygen species which produce oxidative damage and that's very well defined. "We already know oxidative damage contributes to brain damage in Alzheimer's patients so if you've got iron in the brain it's very likely to do some damage. It can't be benign." Other experts in the field are more cautious about a possible link. Dr Clare Walton, research manager at the Alzheimer's Society, said there was no strong evidence that magnetite causes Alzheimer's disease or makes it worse. "This study offers convincing evidence that magnetite from air pollution can get into the brain, but it doesn't tell us what effect this has on brain health or conditions such as Alzheimer's disease," she said. "The causes of dementia are complex and so far there hasn't been enough research to say whether living in cities and polluted areas raises the risk of dementia. Further work in this area is important, but until we have more information people should not be unduly worried." She said that in the meantime more practical ways of lowering the chances of developing dementia include regular exercise, eating a healthy diet and avoiding smoking.

Kenworth W900 is almost here The iconic Kenworth W900 truck model should be added to the American Truck Simulator line-up in a few short days; it will be a part of the first small game update that we are finishing now. This is actually the very first truck we have started creating for the game over two years ago, it has been in an almost-finished state for a long time. We were sure that this classic vehicle would be received very positively by our fans. However, unbeknown to us, it did not turn out to be the best choice for the first vehicle to approach Kenworth with during initial licensing discussions. Truck manufacturers tend to be very careful about their image, and Kenworth, as the pioneer in aerodynamics in cabin design with their T680, had a rather different idea of the ideal truck to have in our game at the moment of release. So it was back to work for us to finish the other truck first before we could hope for the licensing deal to be successfully signed. Meanwhile, we also owe you news concerning the state of Steampunk DLC. We are gifting it now to loyal Steam followers of American Truck Simulator as promised. Our “robot” code has been processing the gifts for a few days already actually, we are however throttled by some technical issues. So far, we have managed to add the DLC to the Steam library of 53,000 players, there is still some 110,000 more DLCs to issue currently. Please have patience with us, the DLC content will automatically appear in your game shortly. As the execution on our side was not as swift as we had hoped, we are not yet limiting your chances to earn the DLC for free. Anybody following the game on Steam until and as of today will still qualify to receive it. You don’t have to worry also if your game was a store pre-order and the box is yet to arrive; so long as you follow the game in time, the DLC will be added to it even if you activate the game a week or two from now.

Us scientists develop new type of lasers by using human blood, they say it will help doctors find tumors in the body. According to the website of alairt why it veers, Monday, scientists at the University of Michigan, invented the new rays, using the included optical source tools and inflated material and reflective Bowl, alflorsin dye and mix it with blood. According to scientists, the method of detecting tumors in the body through injection of dye alflorsin, and shed new laser on human skin to track the presence of tumors. American scientists pointed out that they seek to further testing to make sure that the rays don't make strong light causes collateral damage.

Apple said, they issued a security update after discovering a powerful spy software for iPhone users targeted in the Middle East. Computer experts said, that a spyware program took advantage of three vulnerabilities previously undeclared for Apple's phone operating system to control the iPhone. Two reports cautioned Cuirass, Thursday, on the lookout, organization and citizen lab, which oversees the Internet, the threat posed by spyware program on the iPhone at the touch of a finger. The program is greatly desirable trick in the spy world, so much so that one spy brokers said, last year, he paid $ 1 million prize for computer programmers can do. Apple confirmed in a statement that it fixed the problem immediately after its flag, "associated press".

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has called Barack Obama a "son of a whore", warning the US leader not to raise human rights concerns with him. Mr Duterte was asked by a reporter how he intends to respond should Mr Obama ask about his war on the drug trade. Hundreds of people have died in anti-drug operations since Mr Duterte won election despite international alarm. He and Mr Obama are due to meet on Tuesday in Laos on the sidelines of an Asean conference. Duterte: From 'Punisher' to president Mr Duterte, who took office in June, has sanctioned the killing of drug dealers to try to wipe out the illegal drugs trade in the Philippines. The UN has repeatedly condemned his policies as a violation of human rights. The Roman Catholic church, the dominant religion in the Philippines, has also criticised Mr Duterte. But Mr Duterte said he is not concerned about the opinions of those observing his actions, adding that he would not take orders from the US, a former colonial ruler of the Philippines. "You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum," Mr Duterte told a news conference, referring to President Obama. "We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me," Mr Duterte said. Some 2,400 people have been killed in his war on drugs since he took office and he said there were more deaths to come. "More people will be killed, plenty will be killed until the last pusher is out of the streets. Until the [last] drug manufacturer is killed, we will continue and I will continue," he said. In August, two UN human rights experts said Mr Duterte's directive for police and the public to kill suspected drug traffickers amounted to "incitement to violence and killing, a crime under international law". Asked whether he would still meet Mr Duterte and raise the issue of extrajudicial killings, Mr Obama said he was assessing whether a meeting would still be constructive. "I always want to make sure that if I'm having a meeting that it's actually productive, and that we're getting something done,'' he said.

Niantic, the game studio behind Pokémon Go, is readying another update for the po[CENSORED]r mobile game. Soon, you'll be able to choose your favorite pocket monster to be your "buddy," confirming the rumor we reported yesterday. Once you choose a Pokémon to be your buddy, it will show up next to you in your trainer profile screen and next to your avatar icon. You'll also get rewards from your buddy Pokémon, like getting Candy while you guys walk together. Niantic also says your buddy will provide "unique in-game rewards and experiences," but doesn't elaborate on what that means beyond getting candy while walking. The company also didn't mention when to expect the update, but hints at a fall release. "We've got a lot more in the works this fall. Stay tuned here for all the details," writes Niantic in a blog post. Summer fad While Pokémon Go was initially a massive success with over 30 million downloads as of July 19, the mobile game is now losing its lustre. According to a Bloomberg report, the game is losing daily active users at an alarming rate and active users are being less engaged. Searches for "Pokémon Go" have declined rapidly since its launch. Even though the game was initially seen as a boon for augmented reality, interest in the technology has also declined in recent months. It's unsurprising that Pokémon Go was a summer fad, with justified criticisms of its shallow gameplay and exponential difficulty. While the original Gameboy game let you battle wild Pokémon to weaken them before an attempted capture, Pokémon Go watered down gameplay to simply throwing streams of balls and berries at Pokémon. Gym battles are similarly shallow, only allowing taps for attacks and swipes for dodges. Hopefully Niantic goes back to the drawing board to update the game's core mechanics. There are only so many Pidgeys I can catch before I start ignoring the game altogether.

Last week, we covered reports of the so-called ‘touch disease‘ that appears to be affecting Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. This problem, which killed Jamie’s phone as well, is caused by the method Apple uses to attach touchscreen control chips to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus motherboard. These chips lack an underfill — a critical layer of material meant to strengthen and stabilize the touchscreen ICs (integrated circuits). When we covered the topic last week we could only report on acedotal evidence from third party shops that the touch disease problem was significant and increasing. New research from Apple Insider put some formal numbers on the problem — and it’s not good news for Apple. Apple Insider obtained information from four high-traffic Apple Stores over a period of six days — three days before the problem was reported in the general media and three days after. Prior to any media reports on the issue, four stores with a total of 2,804 appointments fielded 1,512 appointments related to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (547 and 965 devices respectively). 47 of the iPhone 6’s and 265 of the iPhone 6 Plus devices had a problem, constituting 8.5% and 27.5% of these devices, respectively. Once media reports began to cover the issue, the number of diagnoses surged. In the next few days, 3039 customers came in for assistance, including 1,659 customers with either an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus (564 and 1094 devices respectively). 66 of the iPhones and 409 of the iPhone Plus’ were found to have ‘touch disease,’ representing 11.7% and 37.4% of the devices presented for examination. Now, this initial surge in traffic following media coverage is expected. It doesn’t mean device failure rates have suddenly surged, it means more customers became aware of the problem and took their hardware in. But the rate of failure is troubling, and outpaces all other known issues for the devices (iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are unaffected, though it’s not clear if this is because not enough time has passed since launch). Apple isn’t just aware of the problem, they’ve been aware of it for months — and they couldn’t care less. It took Apple six months to issue formal guidance on how to solve the problem and Apple’s solution is that customers should buy a new iPhone or exchange their own devices. Since the devices Apple offers on exchange are actually refurbs, the problem has been cropping up again for some customers. “It’s about time that the Apple press got a whiff of the problem,” one Apple Genius said to Apple Insider. “I’m getting tired of pulling service stock out of the box, and seeing the exact same problem that the customer has on the replacement before I leave backstage.” If your device is still in-warranty, Apple will give you a refurbished replacement, which may or may not have the same problem. If the device is out of warranty, the repair fee is reportedly between $85 and $249, though Apple may be pushing consumers towards device replacement. Apple Insider notes that the Cupertino company may be prepping a more aggressive response but none has been announced to date. While 11% may not seem like a high number, it’s far higher than background average and apparently the largest single failure mode.

There's a lot of Xbox hardware out there at the moment. The Xbox One S has just hit store shelves, and Project Scorpio is due out next year. With all this movement we can't help but ask ourselves when we'll see a completely new Xbox. A new Xbox wouldn't just be an Xbox One fitted into a smaller chassis, and nor would it be a 4K version of the existing console. When it comes to the Xbox Two one thing is clear, Microsoft has a big job on its hands if it wants to claw back the substantial lead that Sony's PlayStation has built up this generation. With Bungie going multi-platform and Cliff Bleszinki leaving Epic Games, Microsoft has lost some of its biggest triple-A developers, and that's really harmed it when it comes to exclusives this generation. We have more questions than answers at this point, but you can be sure just as the sun is going to rise out of the east tomorrow, at some point Phil Spencer will have to take the stage at E3 and say, "Yes, Xbox Two is coming." But you can't talk about a possible new Xbox without first taking a look at the current one. The chosen 'One' The Xbox One available to buy today is a very long way from the system announced on stage by Don Mattrick back in May 2013. If all the features in the original Xbox One announcement had come about, we'd now have a console that required a near-constant internet connection for you to play your games, the physical discs containing your games would have been tied to your Xbox Live account, effectively killing off the pre-owned games market and pretty much everything would've required a subscription to Xbox Live Gold. Plus, it would've needed the new and improved Kinect (bundled with every console) to be connected in order to be fully functional, even if you never intended to use Kinect's voice or motion control. "Microsoft made many mistakes during the pre-launch period of the Xbox One," says Wired and T3 tech expert Guy Cocker, "but there were three major ones. "Firstly, it pitched a product that no one wanted. The announcement heralded the device as an entertainment box that combined a DVR, a video streamer, an internet browser and pretty much lastly a games machine. "Because of this, and Microsoft's perceived need for Kinect to power all this, the machine was significantly more expensive than the PS4. Finally, it proposed some very anti-consumer measures when it came to being able to buy games and then give or sell them to someone else." It's safe to say that these features were not well-received by the majority of gaming fans. Microsoft, to its credit, listened to fan feedback and one after another introduced new policies to make the console more appealing to its core audience. Xbox: Evolved It's been quite the transformation, but Microsoft is nowhere near finished yet and through monthly software updates, the console has continued to tweak its look and performance. Since launch it's added external hard drive support, improved media player functionality for multiple file types and formats, drastically overhauled its party chat and social functions and made changes to its built-in game DVR features, and that's only been in the last three months. And given that this generation of consoles is even more amenable to change thanks to operating systems built specifically for regular updates, dedicated game servers and ample access to cloud storage, what's actually inside the box under your TV needn't be the end-all its capabilities. What does this mean for the Next Xbox? So what can we learn from all this about the new Xbox? Yes, the new one, because there will, inexorably, be another console. It's certainly some ways off yet, but will it be another eight year wait? There are differing opinions on that. "I would think so," says Jon Hicks, former editor of Official Xbox Magazine, "but the timing may change. Microsoft was very clear at the announcement of Xbox One that it would have a ten-year lifespan, and that is likely to remain the case, but the shift from Xbox 360 and PS3 to next-gen hasn't mirrored the shift from the previous generation. "The initial sales of new-gen consoles, and the drop-off in software sales for the previous generation, has surprised everybody - the expectation was of a slower transition, and the consensus explanation is that there was significant pent-up demand for new consoles. So it might be that Xbox One's replacement arrives a bit sooner than the eight years that Xbox 360 lasted, though the overall lifespan sticks at ten years. That said, even the sales data doesn't really compare any more because Xbox 360 has an extremely robust digital sales platform, the data for which isn't shared publicly. So it could be the drop in physical software sales is a red herring. Ask me in a couple of years, basically." I would say there'll be another Xbox in about five years time," he says. Cocker, though, thinks it'll be sooner. "I would say there'll be another Xbox in about five years time," he says. "I think Microsoft will have definitely learned from its mistakes; the main guy responsible for the Xbox One's development, Don Mattrick, left the company for Zynga shortly after announcing it on stage, and Phil Spencer, who now runs Microsoft's Xbox division, is a games man through and through. I think 2015, actually, is going to be a good time for Xbox. It's putting games back at the forefront, which is how it managed to become so successful with the original console back in 2001; with a great machine and great exclusive games like Halo and Jet Set Radio Future." If cryptic allusions by Xbox head Phil Spencer are to be believed, we might be seeing an Xbox Two announcement sooner than we think. In a blog post made back in April, Spencer teased that "Over the next few weeks and months we'll be sharing more of our plans for gaming on Xbox One, Windows 10 and beyond." With the Nintendo NX coming next year and Sony's Playstation 4.5 console set to be announced at E3 2016, we wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft had some Xbox Two news for us soon. A recent FCC filing suggests that Microsoft has a hardware refresh of its own planned for this year's E3. The smart money is on some kind of slim version of the Xbox One, but could this be an indication that Microsoft has something bigger planned? Next Xbox: a game focus? Ah yes, the games. Microsoft may have neglected to mention those during the Xbox One's original reveal, but it's changed its tune since in response to vocal feedback from gaming communities. It's a lesson MS isn't likely to forget in a hurry - the company's E3 and Gamescom messages were solely focused on games over the console's TV and set-top box capabilities. "I think the next Xbox will be a very game-focused console, so it will launch with high-spec PC parts like the Xbox One, the difference being it will be cheaper at launch," says Cocker. "I think the key for Microsoft, one that it has recognised, will be to make more acquisitions like Mojang (which Microsoft purchased just last week for $2.5bn) over the coming years. Exclusives are the lifeblood for any console maker, and Microsoft needs to build stronger brands and exclusives in the face of Sony's increasing dominance in exclusive games and studios. There's also a very good chance the next Xbox will finally ditch a physical disc drive, I think, as online services get better and better." "Both Xbox One and PS4 are extremely online-focused consoles and the games produced for them reflect that - Destiny being the most recent high-profile example of an online-only game," says Hicks. "Somebody, and it might not be Microsoft, is definitely going to have an online-only console relatively soon. It's just the way the world is going now. The only thing that I would bet on is that next time Microsoft will announce it with its still-impressive games lineup first." The "TV, TV, TV" approach is not one the company is likely to repeat, certainly. Next Xbox: Kinect And what of Kinect, the cutting-edge technology Microsoft was so keen to push as the Xbox One's key unique selling point just months ago, which now appears to have been all but forgotten? "It's not the fundamental platform feature that Microsoft was initially hoping for, and it won't have as extensive an array of software that uses it as a result," Hicks says. "But it's still a smart piece of tech, it can be used in very interesting ways, and it's a distinctive asset for the platform. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some cool applications and games for it next year, once Xbox One is a bit more established sales-wise." Next Xbox: hardware Yet while its rival PlayStation continues to explore new horizons for the PS4 and beyond with Project Morpheus, Playstation Now and Vita Cross-Play, Microsoft has a few other aces up its sleeve. "Microsoft has always had an incredible R&D budget and will continue to invest in all sorts of new technology, whether for use itself or for licence elsewhere," Hicks says. "I suspect we'll see Kinect return in some capacity; there will be other as yet unrevealed technology that will join it. I've been hearing for years that there was VR tech in development; there'll be other stuff too. The original Kinect was an accessory added to the 360 very late on, and was hugely successful - Microsoft designed Xbox One specifically to support potential expansion of that sort. Ten years is a long time, you don't design something to last that long without leaving it open to evolution." Whether we'll see this new technology take shape during this console generation or next remains to be seen, but we do know that Illumiroom, a proof-of-concept projector system from Microsoft Research that augments the area around your TV to reflect what's being show on your console – a visual version of surround sound, effectively - may well make a return along with the next Xbox, after Microsoft deemed it 'too expensive' to mass produce for the Xbox One. The overall positive public response to Illumiroom isn't something the company is likely to forget when it comes to brainstorming the new console, if it hasn't already begun to. A new console is a case of when rather than if, and with the lessons learned from the Xbox One's launch, its subsequent evolution and rising sales, Microsoft couldn't be in a better position to make the next console its most considered launch yet. We just might have to wait another seven years for it. Related product: Microsoft Xbox One Our Verdict: Far better than it once was, and destined to keep improving, Xbox One is a truly modern piece of kit. It suffers for its catch-all approach a little, but you won't see some of its tricks on any competitor's machine.

The new Regera, from Swedish boutique supercar maker Koenigsegg, is an exercise in excess, with a mid-mounted twin-turbo 5-litre V8 engine and a trio of electric motors that together produce a completely outrageous 1,479 horsepower and 1,465 pound-feet of torque — all of which is delivered to the tarmac through the rear wheels. The Regera — of which only 80 will emerge from carmaker's small factory in Ängelholm, Sweden — is a hybrid hypercar in the idiom of the McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari, but trumps all of them in power, performance and panache. Two weeks before Koenigsegg packed up the candy apple red car you see here for a date at California's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on 21 August, TopGear.com's Ollie Marriage and photographer Rowan Horncastle had the exclusive opportunity to visit Ängelholm, Sweden, to spend the day driving this £1.4m monster with company founder Christian von Koenigsegg. Ollie's thoughts on Sweden's megacar? "Utterly bonkers", he writes. "Koenigsegg needs a big slap on the back", says Marriage, "for having the courage, foresight and ability to bring this uniquely complicated car to life." On Koenigsegg the carmaker: Koenigsegg is a small company (it’s only ever built around 120 cars) and doesn’t have the resources the holy trinity manufacturers can call on. The assumption would be that the Regera (say it with a hard ‘g’, it translates as ‘to reign’), would give a passing nod to electrical power, before pointing you in the direction of its 1160bhp internal combustion output and showing you the way to 250mph. But you’d be wrong. Some things you need to know about Koenigsegg: it does almost all its own carbon fibre work, was the first to equip a production car with carbon fibre wheels, assembles its own ECU circuit boards, has developed its own infotainment software and is the first to use F1 battery cell technology in a road car. On the Regera's electric motors: There’s a 32kg motor for each rear wheel ... and another on the crank, this one to recharge the battery, operate as a starter motor and generally smooth things out and assist when it can. That one delivers around 220bhp, while each rear wheel motor contributes another 240bhp. Yep, that’s a total of 700bhp of electric power right there. Basically the same ballpark as the Tesla Model S P90D — or, expressed another way, more wattage than the P1, 918 and LaFerrari combined. On the Regera's performance: Christian’s projections are for 0-62mph in 2.8secs and a top speed a little over 250mph. But that’s not the half of it and it’s what he told me next that colours the picture. “The thing we’ve realised is that chasing the ultimate top speed is starting to become a nonsense, so our philosophy is more like this: Whoever gets to 250mph first wins.” The other figures he quotes are plain bananas, and the one that truly blows my mind is the 3.2secs it takes to accelerate from 90-155mph. The projections show it will hit 250mph in around 20 seconds, having passed 186mph (300kmh) in around 11 flat. Koenigsegg intends for the Regera to rain on the Chiron’s parade, to make you question why Bugatti hasn’t done something this radical for the Veyron’s replacement. On its ride and handling: The steering is heavy, but delicious to use. It’s hydraulic, with no slack, but real meat and reward. If anything the ride is even better. Long wishbones, in-board dampers and reduced unsprung mass thanks in part to the carbon wheels (made from 750 individual pieces, it takes one man a week to build one rim), mean the Regera rides beautifully, feels remarkably precise and polished on the road. How does it manage that? Look at the wheelarch clearance – where do the wheels go? On its acceleration: The force… oh my god. It just builds and builds, pushing, pressing, the noise guttural and savage through the Twenties-style flattened Akrapovic pipes. It’s mind-blowing. I’d driven a McLaren P1 a few days before I went out to Sweden. I still can’t get my head around how fast that is, but I do know the Regera is vastly faster. Christian believes it might wheelspin up to 150mph. I have never experienced anything that bonfires its tyres like the Regera. Anything. Despite the best tractive efforts of the vast 345-width rear Michelins, they’re as nothing in the 1465lb-ft torque deluge. It’s another world first for Koenigsegg – the first land-based cumulo-nimbus production facility. On its design: It looks sensational in candy apple red, there’s real beauty in its long tail and taut curves and like all Koenigsegg’s the roof panel removes to store under the nose. Do so and the car’s look changes totally, but sitting inside I prefer it with the roof on: it exaggerates the wrap-around widescreen view forward. The A-pillars are tucked right round the sides and you sit so far back that I doubt the tips of my toes reach to the base of the screen. On its plans for the Bugatti Chiron: Koenigsegg intends for the Regera to rain on the Chiron’s parade, to make you question why Bugatti hasn’t done something this radical for the Veyron’s replacement. Perhaps in line with that, the Regera is intended to be a gentler experience than [its predecessor] the Agera. The engine is rubber bushed to lessen vibration, the rear wing whirrs up and down hydraulically, as do the doors and front and rear clams. It’s superb to watch. The cabin is a work of art, the side sills massively wide, the carbon shelled, memory foam seats built here from the ground up, the F1-spec batteries tucked away in the transmission tunnel.
