  1. Microsoft at a media event in May 2014 was widely expected to unveil a miniature version of its po[CENSORED]r Surface tablet. The slate, rumored to feature an 8-inch display, had supposedly been in development for more than a year but ended up being a no-show. Instead, we got the full-sized Surface Pro 3. Sources at the time said the Surface Mini was delayed at the very last minute by Microsoft chief Satya Nadella and VP Stephen Elop because they didn’t feel it was “different enough” from its competition. Now more than three years later, photos of the mythological device have leaked onto the Internet. Windows Central managed to get their mitts on the device. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 330 graphics, the tablet was to feature an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1,440 x 1,080 pixels. It had 32GB of local storage, a microSD card slot for expansion, a headphone jack, a micro USB port for charging and dual-band Wi-Fi. The Surface Mini was to include a Surface Pen and an integrated case / kickstand. A Type Cover or similar keyboard accessory wasn’t in the cards as the device was to be used exclusively with the stylus and touch. Tablets were still relatively po[CENSORED]r in 2014 but as smartphones continued to swell in size and encroach into small tablet territory, many of the miniature devices fell out of favor with the public.

  3. Apple has turned to a familiar name in the automotive rental world to test its secretive self-driving vehicle technology. According to documents recently released by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Apple is leasing a small number of Lexus RX450h sport-utility vehicles from Hertz Global Holdings Inc.’s Donlen fleet-management unit. Apple’s name has been linked to the development of autonomous driving technology for a few years now. Initial reports suggested the company was developing its own self-driving vehicle under the banner Project Titan although recently, we’ve heard that Apple shifted focus and is now working strictly on software development. Should that prove accurate, Apple would likely look to partner with an established automaker to get its driving tech on the road. A person familiar with the matter tells Bloomberg that Apple has been testing its autonomous driving technology on public roads in and around the San Francisco Bay area for at least a year. Apple was awarded a permit by the DMV to test self-driving vehicles in the state of California back in April. Hertz’s stock is up more than 13.5 percent on the news as of writing. Apple’s share value, meanwhile, is down 0.31 percent. Hertz isn’t the only rental car firm topping tech headlines. Earlier today, it was announced that Avisis partnering with Alphabet company Waymo on a self-driving program that’ll see the rental car specialist service and house Waymo’s self-driving minivans in Phoenix.

  6. Although solid state drives have steadily increased in capacity, so too have the size of game installs. Today's triple-A titles commonly occupy upwards of 20GB with many approaching or exceeding 60GB, especially after accounting for downloadable content. Ironically, it's often these large releases that benefit the most from the improved load times of a flash drive, which is likely to be filled faster than you'd expect if it's on the smaller side of SSDs -- even a 250GB model would be stuffed with four GTA V-sized titles. Fortunately, Steam recently made it easier than ever to move games from one location to another, no longer requiring you to open a Windows command prompt or download third-party tools, though we'll outline those methods, too, given that they still work. Backing up your games... This isn't mandatory but is nonetheless a worthwhile precaution. The most convenient way is simply copying your Steam or SteamApps folder (which is where your games are) to a backup directory via Windows Explorer. However, the Steam client also provides an integrated backup and recovery process that will let you select installed titles and store them as backup files. The tool splits the game data into CSM/CSD files that are sized suitably for fitting on CDs and DVDs, though you can also create one large save. Getting there: Go to your Steam library > Right click on a game > Backup game files... > Select the installed games to backup and follow the prompts from there. To restore these files as installed Steam games, head to Steam > Backup and restore games... > Restore a previous backup > point it to your backup files > continue with the prompts. Moving a single game between drives Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders Make a new Steam library folder on the new drive (you can right click on one of these folders to set it as your default installation path, although the next time you install a game, Steam will ask where you want it to go). Move an already installed game to the new drive: Right click on the game in your Steam library > Properties > Local Files tab > Move install folder... > Choose the directory > Move folder I want to move a game back off my SSD The easiest way would be repeating the last step above by using Steam's integrated feature for moving installation folders, though this method works too: Using Windows Explorer, move the game folder from your SSD back to the original steamapps\common directory or some other library folder that Steam recognizes. From Steam, right click on the game in your library and delete its local contents, which shouldn't actually delete anything because you just moved all the game files. Install the game again but point the installer to wherever you moved the files in step one, which should prompt Steam to verify the data and not download anything. Moving your entire Steam install Close Steam and head to your Steam folder or library via Windows (probably C:\Program Files\Steam (x86)). Copy and paste your Steam folder to the new location (rename the old folder and leave it in the original directory as a backup -- or delete it if desired). You can run Steam.exe from the new location or download and run the Steam installer and point it to your new location (this can help clean up shortcuts etc.). Using mklink via Windows instead (the old way) Around the time SSDs were taking off (nearly a decade ago!), Steam didn't provide a built-in method for moving games between drives -- this feature was only added in early 2017. Instead, gamers relied on the Windows command mklink, which links one directory to another so that when software interacts with location A, it's redirected to location B. In other words, Steam will think the game is in its original directory, but it will instead run from the new drive. This approach still works but is largely considered obsolete because of the features now built into Steam: Create the folder where you'd like your game to be (example: D:\Games\Steam) Head to SteamApps (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common) and cut/paste the game you'd like to move to the new drive (you don't want to leave a copy of the game in your old directory) When the file transfer finishes, open the Windows command prompt and enter mklink /d "LINK" "TARGET" -- (example: mklink /d "d:\games\steam\steamapps\common\fullmojorampage" "e:\games\steam\steamapps\common\fullmojorampage") Undoing that link is as simple as deleting the link in C:\Steam\steamapps\common. Tip: You should be able to see the link you made by entering the dir command. Something isn't right with my Steam install! Copy and paste your SteamApps folder to a backup location Uninstall Steam Reinstall Steam and copy your SteamApps folder back into the Steam installation directory If a game has become corrupt, you can also have Steam automatically seek and swap damaged files by verifying the integrity of your local data: Right click on the broken game in your Steam library > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game files... If it's been a while since you've done this, note that it doesn't completely freeze the Steam client anymore so you can continue chatting etc. Related tools for moving/backing up games Download Steam Mover -- Before Valve's client could handle it, this was the go-to utility for moving Steam games to a new drive. It offers an easy interface to relocate your games and create a link in Windows (like the manual mklink approach outlined above). Version 0.1 of Steam Mover was released in April 2010 and although it's never received an update, it has accumulated hundreds of thousands of downloads in that time and it's rare to find a complaint. Download SteamTool Library Manager -- Functionally identical to Steam Mover -- both by interface design and in methodology, relying on NTFS junctions to create a link between the new and old locations (note that this also means it only works on NTFS partitions). Download Gamesave Manager -- GSM can automatically detect the save data for 4,764 gamesand makes it easy to backup, restore and transfer game saves. However, the utility also provides other features including the ability to move Steam games (it too uses symbolic links or NTFS junctions). Tutorial By: TechSpot
  7. After the debacle that was the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is looking to regain the trust of the Galaxy Note devotees. Since Samsung confirmed back in January that a Galaxy Note 8 would indeed be released, there have been plenty of rumors, leaks, and more rumors. Today, leak extraordinaire Evan Blass unveiled what he says the specs and price for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 are going to be. According to evleaks, the Note 8 will sport a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with the same edge to edge design and 18.5:9 aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8. The Note 8 will also come in black, blue, and gold. On the outside, the Note 8 will have a dual camera setup like the LG G6, iPhone 7 Plus, and recently released OnePlus 5. Both cameras will be 12-megapixels with optical image stabilization. They will be positioned horizontally to the left of the heart rate sensor and flash. Owners of the Galaxy S8 have bemoaned the placement of the fingerprint sensor next to the camera as it often causes unintended smudges to the camera lens. Unfortunately, it seems the Note 8 will have a similar design with the fingerprint sensor once again next to the camera. However, Blass points out that the distance between the sensor and the camera is greater. Obviously, the battery will be a major point of focus for the Note 8 as not to repeat the mistakes of the Note 7. To that end, Blass reports that the battery will be a "relatively conservative" 3300mAh battery. Clearly, Samsung is not trying to take any risks with this iteration. Internally, the Note 8 will be powered by either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 which is on par with the current S8/S8+. It will also have a generous 6GB of RAM which should make general usage and multitasking snappy. As far as Touchwiz, Blass writes, "On the software side of things, Samsung has apparently improved the ease-of-use of split-screen multitasking, endowed the S Pen with more capabilities (such as full-sentence language translation and currency conversion), and added the ability to pin handwritten notes to the always-on display." The Note 8 will also have the same DeX capability as the S8/S8+. Finally, the retail price of the Note 8 will be closer to $1,000 which isn't surprising considering the unlocked Galaxy S8+ sold for $825 at launch. Evan Blass' reputation is pretty stellar regarding leaks, but of course we'll still have to wait until Samsung formally unveils the Galaxy Note 8 later this year.

  17. Just as expected, Intel has revealed its new family of enthusiast processors at Computex. At the top of the Core X-series sits its answer to AMD’s 16-core/32-thread Threadripper CPU: the $1999 i9-7980XE, which boasts an astounding 18 cores/36 threads. Intel says the i9-7980XE is the first ever teraflop desktop PC processor. Two grand is an awful lot of money, but this is the flagship chip; the rest of i9 X-series are cheaper. Available in 16-core, 14-core, 12-core, and 10-core versions, these Skylake-based chips range from $999 (for the ten core i9-7900X) to $1699. Intel says that compared to Broadwell-E chips such as the $1723 10-core i7-6950X, the new CPUs offer 15 percent faster single thread performance and are 10 percent faster when it comes to multithreaded tasks. The i9-7900X chip comes with a base clock speed of 3.3GHz, which jumps to 4.3GHz dual-core speeds when using Turbo Boost 2.0. And thanks to the improved Turbo Boost 3.0, which can dynamically identify and overclock the two “best” cores, it can hit 4.5GHz. Intel hasn't yet revealed the clock speeds for the rest of the Core i9 chips. For those on a tighter budget, there’s the Core i7 and i5 X-series CPUs. These include the only two Kaby Lake-X processors in the new line: the i5-7640X ($242) and i7-7740X ($339). All the Core X CPUs use the new X299 chipset (socket 2066), which boasts up to eight SATA 3.0 ports, up to ten USB 3.0 ports, and, when using CPUs with 10 cores or more, 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes All those cores mean things can get toasty. As such, Intel is selling its own liquid cooler designed for the 165W TDP and 140W TDP of the new chips. It's estimated retail price is between $80 - $100, and it also works with some previous generation CPU models. Both the new X-series processors and compatible motherboards should arrive “in the coming weeks.”
  18. In its pre-Computex press briefing earlier today, Asus unveiled a total of five new laptops: three new ZenBooks and a pair of VivoBook devices. First up was the ZenBook Flip S, which, according to Company chairman Jonney Shih, is the “world’s thinnest convertible.” The 13.3-inch, hinged device measures just under 11mm (0.4 inches) thick, making it 20 percent thinner than the 17mm MacBook Air, and weighs only 2.42 pounds. On the inside, the Flip S comes with a seventh gen i5 or i7 CPU, 1TB of SSD storage, and 16GB of LPDDR3 memory. It also boasts a 4K screen, fingerprint security sensor, minimal bezels, 11.5 hours battery life (i7 model), and a single USB Type-C port. There’s also stylus support, though it’s not clear if Asus will include a pen with the device, or if it will be bought separately. The Flip S will go on sale in September starting at $1099. Next is Asus’ new ultrabook, the ZenBook Pro UX550. This 15.6-inch 4K laptop packs a GTX 1050 Ti, an i7-7700HQ or i5 7300HQ processor, up to 1TB SSD storage, and 4GB of DDR4 RAM inside its 0.74-inch thick chassis. It weighs just 4 pounds and features two USB Type-C ports (supporting Thunderbolt 3), two USB Type-A 3.1 ports, a microSD card reader, a full-sized HDMI 1.4, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. It’s also got a dual-fan cooling setup, 14 hours battery life, and quick charging that can take it from 0 to 60 percent battery in just 49 minutes. Add to this the Harman/Kardon-certified quad-speaker audio system, and you have a serious rival for the MacBook Pro. The ZenBook Pro UX550 starts at $1299 and will be available this summer. The last of the new ZenBooks is the Zenbook 3 Deluxe. At 12.9mm thick, Asus says it’s the world’s thinnest 14-inch laptop. It comes in i5 or i7 configurations, has up to 16GB 2133MHz LPDD3 memory, and up to 1TB of storage. The laptop includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a fingerprint scanner, and a 1080p display covered in Gorilla glass. It starts at $1199. Moving on to the VivoBooks, Asus’ 15.6-inch 4K VivoBook Pro N580 comes with a GTX 1050 GPU, a Core i7-7700HQ, up to 2TB HDD and 512GB SSD storage, and up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. Music lovers should appreciate its Harman Kardon-certified audio, including twin speakers with 8 cc audio chambers and smart-amplifier technology for 3.2X louder volume. It starts at $799 and will be available this summer. The cheaper (starting at $499) VivoBook S can be specced up to a Core i7-7500U and comes with a GTX 940MX GPU. "Our brand-new ZenBook and VivoBook line-up...[provides] everyone with a new definition of thin, beautiful and powerful laptops," said Shih.
