Citroen pulls the wraps off its fourth gen C3 and gives us full details of the 199-mile all-electric version Citroen has unveiled the new C3, and we have bad news for all you hatchback fans out there. Yep, it’s been crossovered. Although if we’re being pedantic, what you’re looking at here isn’t actually the new C3. You see, Citroen has decided that a new all-electric version should head up this fourth generation of its most po[CENSORED]r car, so say hello to the inventively titled e-C3. The e-C3 is the first car to be based on the new, ‘cost-efficient’ Stellantis Smart Car platform, which means there’s a 44kWh lithium ferro phosphate battery pack that provides up to 199 miles of range. With 100kW DC rapid charging, a 20 to 80 per cent top-up takes just 26 minutes, while a 111bhp electric motor allows for a 0-62mph time of ‘around 11 seconds’ and a top speed of just 84mph. Not the most eye-catching headline stats then, but Citroen reckons e-C3 prices will start at under £23,000. Not bad. We’re told that a cheaper, 124-mile version with a smaller battery will arrive by 2025 too. When a Vauxhall Corsa Electric starts at £32,095 with a range of 222 miles, the Citroen suddenly seems like a very decent option. We're still sad it’s been given the crossover treatment though. We’re told that the squared-off shape was inspired by the Oli concept, and this is the first time we’ve seen Citroen’s new ‘brand signature’ face on a production car. Overall, this thing is 19mm longer, 6mm wider and almost 30mm further off the ground than the previous gen C3. Apparently this and the black plastic cladding is to ‘reflect customer tastes’. There’ll be three rather shouty trim levels at launch: ‘YOU!’, ‘PLUS’, and ‘MAX’ with the former riding on 16-inch steel wheels and the latter two on 17-inch alloys. A contrast roof will be an optional extra, but all versions will come with Citroen’s fancy Advanced Comfort Suspension as standard. Translated into something that slightly resembles English, that means there are two hydraulic bump stops at each corner – one for compression and the other for rebound. For lighter bumps the springs and shocks do everything themselves, but for what Citroen refers to as ‘major impacts’ the hydraulic stops iron out any jolts at the end of the range. Clever. There’s more of a nod to comfort on the inside too, with Citroen Advanced Comfort seats and something called the C-ZEN LOUNGE (their caps, not ours) which as far as we can tell just refers to the straight and fabric-wrapped dashboard. Certainly doesn’t look like any of our living rooms, that’s for sure. Anyway, there’s a new smaller steering wheel in there too, as well as a dial display that’s reflected onto a gloss black section just underneath the windscreen. Oh, and all but the extremely shouty YOU! trims get a large 10.25-inch touchscreen. Link

WASHINGTON — Early Monday morning, as the White House announced that President Joe Biden was postponing planned trip to Colorado, he was huddling with his national security advisers. Pressure was mounting for the U.S. to use its influence with Israel to broker a deal with Egypt that would bring humanitarian relief to Palestinian civilians in Gaza, especially before a ground invasion against Hamas began. The president’s team was gaming out the idea of traveling to Israel to show solidarity with one America’s closest allies during wartime, but also to meet face-to-face with leaders the U.S. needed to get on board with a plan for Palestinian civilians now and in the future. One of the conditions of a Biden visit: It needed to take place before Israel began its planned ground invasion, according to multiple current and former administration officials. Otherwise, officials said, a trip would have to be put off for a while. Biden signed off on making this historic trip to Israel on Monday afternoon, after rounds of phone calls with key leaders in the region and days of shuttle diplomacy across the Middle East by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “We saw a window,” one administration official said of the timing. But Biden’s trip to the Middle East got off to a rocky start even before he left Washington on Tuesday night. His plans to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman unraveled after Hamas accused Israel of a bombing of a hospital in Gaza that killed hundreds of people, including many children. Israel denies involvement in the hospital airstrike and says it was caused by a misfired rocket from “terrorists in Gaza.” White House officials scrambled to put out a statement just as the president was leaving to board Air Force One for the flight to Tel Aviv. Biden had consulted with King Abdullah and decided to postpone his stop in Amman, the statement said, but “looks forward to consulting in person with these leaders soon." That initial fallout from the deadly bombing could be just the first of potentially more hurdles for Biden as he embarks on this high-stakes trip to a region full of unpredictability. Already, the planning of this presidential visit to Israel was unlike others that Biden and his predecessors have made for decades. The idea of Biden visiting Israel was floated by Israeli officials in the early days after Hamas’ terrorist attack on Oct. 7, administration officials said. At the time, Biden wanted the idea explored as, according to one official, he “felt strongly it was important to continue to stand in solidarity with Israel and the Israeli people in their hour of need.” In a moment of crisis, Biden also prefers a face-to-face meeting over any other form of communication, officials said. White House officials in coordination with U.S. Secret Service then took a look at the parameters of such a trip, what the security requirements would be to ensure it would be safe. Trips by two Cabinet officials — Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin — to Israel helped lay the groundwork for a Biden visit. The trip, while to a country at war, is a stark contrast from the president’s visit to Ukraine earlier this year, which was shrouded in secrecy. One U.S. official stressed that while there are security challenges in Israel, it’s a different kind of conflict than Ukraine. Ukraine is “facing a military that has very long-range, advanced, sophisticated capabilities and a degree of mass lethality that Hamas does not possess,” a U.S. official said. “Obviously we’ll take all necessary precautions to keep him safe and obviously we’re working around the clock.” Discussions inside the White House were taking place against the backdrop of idling Israeli tanks along the Gaza border. Israel’s intensifying bombing of Gaza was raising concerns within the administration that public support for Israel could shift, NBC News has reported. During a call with Biden on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned the idea to the president more directly, another administration official said. There was some frustration in the White House that the prime minister’s invitation leaked — U.S. officials presumed from the Israelis — but administration officials were already determining what would be “feasible” for the president to do, as one official put it. A senior U.S. official called the mood in the Oval Office on Monday morning “sober and serious.” Seated around the president — in a photo released publicly by the White House — were national security adviser Jake Sullivan, CIA Director Bill Burns, chief of staff Jeff Zients, Counselor to the President Steve Ricchetti, homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall and several others. At the time the Colorado trip was scrapped, Biden had not yet made a final decision to go to Israel, according to a senior U.S. official. The president gave the green light Monday afternoon after lengthy discussions with his national security team, including Blinken, who was in Israel. His decision was well received in Israel, where his response to the Hamas attack has been widely praised. “The fact that the most powerful person on Earth — the president of the United States — is standing behind us is a big deal,” a policy adviser to Netanyahu said. Putting together the now-canceled meeting in Amman with the president, Abbas, El-Sissi and King Abdullah II was also a key part of the trip, according to administration officials. Soon after they announced Biden’s plans to travel to Israel and Jordan, administration officials privately stressed the importance of Biden's meeting with Abbas, the Palestinian leader, in particular. “Given the scope of the challenges that this conflict is presenting to us, it would have been irresponsible for the president not to spend time talking to Arab leaders as well -- and that includes Mahmoud Abbas,” one U.S. official said earlier Tuesday. Just hours later, plans changed. Link

The Biden administration has announced new restrictions on exports of advanced chips to China, including two made-for-China chips from Nvidia. US chip stocks fell as the curbs also hit Advanced Micro Devices and Intel. The curbs are aimed at closing loopholes that became apparent after the US announced export curbs on chips last October. They are designed to prevent China's military from importing advanced semiconductors or equipment. Nvidia has said in a filing that the new export restrictions will block sales of two high-end artificial intelligence chips it created for the Chinese market - A800 and H800. It said that one of its gaming chips will also be blocked. Although the curbs also affect other chip makers, analysts believe Nvidia will be hit the hardest because China accounts for up to 25% of its revenues from data centre chip sales. Nvidia's shares, which are considered a star stock, fell by as much as 4.7% in the wake of the announcement. The Semiconductor Industry Association, which represents 99% of the US semiconductor industry by revenue, said in a statement that the new measures are "overly broad" and "risk harming the US semiconductor ecosystem without advancing national security as they encourage overseas customers to look elsewhere". A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy also said that it "firmly opposes" the new restrictions, which also target Iran and Russia and go into effect in 30 days. Two months ago, China retaliated by restricting exports of two materials, gallium and germanium, which are key to the semiconductor industry. China is by far the biggest player in the global supply chain of gallium and germanium. It produces 80% of the world's gallium and 60% of germanium, according to the Critical Raw Materials Alliance (CRMA) industry body. The materials are "minor metals", meaning that they are not usually found on their own in nature, and are often the by-product of other processes. Besides the US, both Japan and the Netherlands - which is home to key chip equipment maker ASML - have also imposed chip technology export restrictions on China. The constant tit-for-tat between the world's two biggest economies has raised concerns over the rise of so-called "resource nationalism" when governments hoard critical materials to exert influence over other countries. Fancy an 18ft custom Caddy estate with an 8.2-litre V8 as your next project car? Why of course you do… Looking for a new project car? Well, how about one car that's so long it should basically count as two? This is a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado that’s currently living in the UK and is up for auction with Bonhams. Although as you can clearly see, rather than being the usual two-door coupe or convertible, this particular Eldorado is a two-door station wagon. We’re told this conversion to an estate was a factory option for the Eldorado, with the work carried out by the American Sunroof Company (ASC). It would have been monstrously expensive in period though, so it’s reckoned that only eight ASC converted Cadillacs were ever built. And if that level of rarity doesn’t float your boaty American limo, then get this: this custom Eldorado was previously owned by none other than Evel Knievel. Yep, Bonhams says that PB Burnett sold the Caddy to the legendary stuntman in 1975, and it was Knievel who had it painted white. Evel’s son Kelly Knievel has also confirmed that he and his mother queued up outside a county hall at 3am to buy the very licence plate that’s still on the car. We already thought this thing was cool. Now we’re counting how many pennies are down the back of the sofa. And would you just get a look at that red leather interior. Incredible. There’s even air conditioning and electrically adjustable seats as 1970s factory options. This particular car has just been extracted from nearly 30 years in storage and only has 43,000 miles on the clock. “It looks to be extremely solid, with just some light surface rust poking through the paint,” says the auction ad. The absolutely vast 8.2-litre V8 has certainly seen better days though, with the offside cylinder head and carburettor both currently in the boot. Helpful. Might need a little bit of work to get it back to producing its full 235bhp. And yes, Cadillac did manage to only extract 235bhp from an 8.2-litre V8. Apparently the keys and most of the history have been lost for this 18.5ft long yacht, which means the ignition barrel has been ‘butchered’ to release the steering lock. There’s also a cracked windscreen, a missing hubcap and a rear-view mirror that’s currently in the glovebox. Still, what a chance for someone in the UK to own Evel Knievel’s old Caddy. Plus, Bonhams reckons it’ll go for between £8,000 and £12,000. Bargain. Link

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan forbade Trump from making statements about potential witnesses or disparaging comments about the prosecutors. WASHINGTON — The judge overseeing the federal election interference case on Monday issued a partial gag order forbidding former President Donald Trump from making statements about potential witnesses or disparaging comments about the prosecutors. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said she would not impose restrictions on Trump's statements about Washington, D.C., and its residents, nor on statements criticizing the government or the Justice Department generally. But she imposed a restriction on all parties, including Trump, that banned them from making or reposting any statements publicly targeting the special counsel or his staff, as well as court staff members or personnel. “Mr. Trump may still vigorously seek public support as a presidential candidate, debate policies and people related to that candidacy, criticize the current administration and assert his belief that this prosecution is politically motivated,” Chutkan said. “But those critical first amendment freedoms do not allow him to launch a pre-trial smear campaign against participating government staff, their families and foreseeable witnesses.” "Mr. Trump can certainly claim he's being unfairly prosecuted, but I cannot imagine any other criminal case in which a defendant is permitted to call the prosecutor 'deranged' or 'a thug,' and I will not permit it here simply because the defendant is running a political campaign," Chutkan added. "His presidential candidacy does not give him carte blanche to vilify and implicitly encourage violence against public servants who are simply doing their job." She went on to say that Trump could make statements about one of his 2024 Republican rivals, former Vice President Mike Pence, but could not speak about his role in the case. Chutkan said Trump did not have a right to launch a smear campaign against witnesses, prosecutors and court staff members. Speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa, Trump said he would appeal the order. "I’ll be the only politician in history that runs with a gag order where I’m not allowed to criticize people. Can you imagine this?" he told the crowd. "We’ll appeal it and we’ll see. But it’s so unconstitutional." Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the federal election interference case against Trump in August, was seeking a narrow gag order against Trump to "protect the integrity of the trial and the jury pool." Trump's team, without evidence, has argued that the Biden administration is trying to silence his speech during the presidential campaign. Prosecutors and Trump's defense attorney appeared before Chutkan at a hearing in Washington on Monday morning. Trump was not present. The trial is scheduled for March. Chutkan laughed after Trump’s lawyer John Lauro argued that the current conditions are working, saying she disagreed before she went through some of Trump's statements. Chutkan said that Trump "doesn’t" have unfettered First Amendment rights and that there's "no question" that the court is entitled to impose restrictions to ensure the fair administration of justice. Chutkan said she had concerns about the breadth of the proposed order presented by Smith's office. But Molly Gaston of the special counsel's office said Trump "can criticize President Biden to his heart’s content" because Biden had nothing to do with the case. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform during the hearing, “The TRUMP GAG ORDER that the CORRUPT Biden Administration is trying to obtain is totally Unconstitutional!” A Trump campaign spokesperson called the order "an absolute abomination and another partisan knife stuck in the heart of our Democracy by Crooked Joe Biden, who was granted the right to muzzle his political opponent, the leading candidate for the Presidency in 2024, and the most po[CENSORED]r political leader in America, President Donald J. Trump. President Trump will continue to fight for our Constitution, the American people’s right to support him, and to keep our country free of the chains of weaponized and targeted law enforcement." Within hours, the Trump campaign also sent out a fundraising email claiming the order had been imposed "at the request of Joe Biden." Two notable people appeared at the courthouse Monday to watch the hearing: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a close Trump ally, and defense lawyer Stanley Woodward, who represents Walt Nauta, Trump’s valet and co-defendant in the separate classified documents case. Woodward appeared to be in court just as an observer but could be seen talking to Trump’s legal team during a break in the proceedings. During the break, Greene could be heard disputing that Trump would ever say some of the hypothetical statements Chutkan presented during arguments. Trump, prosecutors said in a filing before the hearing, wants "special treatment, asserting that because he is a political candidate, he should have free rein to publicly intimidate witnesses and malign the Court, citizens of this District, and prosecutors." But in this case, they wrote, he should be treated like any criminal defendant. Trump's team had argued that the gag order sought by prosecutors was politically motivated. “At bottom, the Proposed Gag Order is nothing more than an obvious attempt by the Biden Administration to unlawfully silence its most prominent political opponent, who has now taken a commanding lead in the polls,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a brief filed last month. Trump’s team sought to delay the trial until 2026, and Smith’s team wanted jury selection in the case to begin this year, but Chutkan set a trial date for March 4, the day before Super Tuesday, when primary voters in several states cast their ballots. Chutkan, who has received threats in connection with her oversight of the case, previously warned Trump about talking about the case in a way that could intimidate witnesses or affect the proceedings. In a separate civil trial in New York, a judge ordered Trump to delete a disparaging post about a member of the judge's staff. “Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, inappropriate and I won’t tolerate it,” said Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the New York attorney general's fraud lawsuit against Trump, his company and his two adult sons. “Consider this a gag order on all parties with respect to posting or publicly speaking about any member of my staff." Thousands of people in Gaza have gathered at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, as diplomatic efforts continue to open it before Israel starts its expected ground operation. But the United Nations said there had been no progress in negotiations on reopening of the crossing. Cairo blames Israel for "not co-operating". All routes out of Gaza are closed, as Israel continues its air strikes in response to Hamas' attack of 7 October. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Monday for the second time in less than a week. After his tour of six Arab states in the region, he returned to the country in an attempt to push for the reopening of the crossing to let in humanitarian aid and evacuate foreign passport holders. Both Mr Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said they were working with Israel, Egypt and "other leading political voices in the region" to re-open the crossing. The Israeli military ordered a blockade of Gaza and cut off the supply of water, food and fuel last week before launching a wave of air strikes in retaliation to Hamas' deadly attack on Israel during which militants raided communities, kidnapped civilians and soldiers and killed more than 1,400 people. What is the Rafah crossing and why is it Gaza's lifeline? On Monday morning, thousands of civilians rushed to the Rafah crossing following reports that it would be temporarily re-opened during a brief ceasefire on Monday. Both Israel and Hamas swiftly denied that any such agreement had been made. Later, a BBC correspondent in southern Gaza confirmed an air strike had hit the area around the crossing, damaging a building on the Palestinian side of the crossing as well as the road. Video analysed by BBC Verify appeared to show a strike on the crossing on Monday. Israel has hit the area around the Rafah crossing point at least three times since it began its air campaign on Gaza. The crossing represents the only potential exit point from Gaza while the Israeli siege of other entry points to the Hamas-controlled territory continues. Dozens of lorries carrying fuel and aid supplies remain on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, waiting for permission to enter, as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates. Israel says the siege will not end until Hamas releases the hostages it seized from Israel on 7 October. The Israelis believe 199 people are being held in Gaza, up from an earlier estimate of 155. Around 2,750 people have died in Gaza since the Hamas assault and more than one million people have been displaced. Gaza-Egypt border crossing should reopen, says UK "There is an urgent need to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza," Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Monday morning, adding that talks with Israel had been fruitless. Cairo has been focusing on getting humanitarian aid for civilians into Gaza. Mr Shoukry said Egypt could allow medical evacuations and let in some Gazans with permission to travel. A number of countries, including the US and the UK, have recommended that its citizens head towards the Rafah crossing, ready for its possible reopening. Although Egypt appears to be prepared to re-open the Rafah crossing to allow foreign passport holders out and humanitarian aid in, it fears a massive influx of Palestinian refugees fleeing the war. Egypt and other Arab states say a this would be unacceptable because it would amount to the expulsion of Palestinians from their land. Link
