  3. German legend Franz Beckenbauer, widely regarded as one of football's greatest players, has died aged 78. He won the World Cup as captain of West Germany in 1974 and lifted the trophy again as manager in 1990. Beckenbauer, who was primarily a defender, played 582 times for Bayern Munich and won the German top flight as both a player and a manager. Nicknamed 'Der Kaiser', as a player he also won the European Championship in 1972, as well as the Ballon d'Or twice. A statement from his family to German news agency DPA read: "It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family. "We ask that you allow us to grieve in silence and refrain from asking any questions." Bayern, Germany's most successful club, said: "The world of FC Bayern is no longer what it used to be - suddenly darker, quieter, poorer." They added that without Beckenbauer "Bayern would never have become the club it is today". Playing as a midfielder, Beckenbauer man-marked Sir Bobby Charlton in the 1966 World Cup final, which England won 4-2, before shifting to his iconic position as a defensive sweeper. He also scored four goals at the 1966 World Cup, aged just 20, and won the award for the tournament's best young player. He went on to play 103 times for West Germany. Beckenbauer is one of only three men to have lifted the World Cup as both a player and a manager, along with Brazil's Mario Zagallo and France's Didier Deschamps. Zagallo died last week at the age of 92. As a player at Bayern, Beckenbauer won four league titles and was captain for the German giants' three European Cup wins in 1974, 1975 and 1976. He also won the Bundesliga with Hamburg in 1982. Uli Hoeness, Bayern's honorary president and a former team-mate, described Beckenbauer as the "greatest personality the club has ever had". "As a player, coach, president, person: unforgettable. Nobody will ever reach him," Hoeness said. "People can say they saw football in Franz Beckenbauer's time. He was a friend to me, a unique companion - and a gift to all of us." Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann said: "For me, Franz Beckenbauer was the best footballer in German history. "His interpretation of the role of the libero [sweeper] changed the game. This role and his friendship with the ball made him a free man. "Franz Beckenbauer was able to float on the lawn. As a footballer, and later also as a coach, he was sublime - he stood above things. When Franz Beckenbauer entered a room, the room lit up." 'A unique footballer and a loveable person' After leaving Bayern, Beckenbauer played for the New York Cosmos, where he and Brazilian great Pele were the poster boys of the burgeoning North American Soccer League. He retired in 1983 and less than a year later, with no managerial experience, was named West Germany manager. Beckenbauer led his country to the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico before winning the trophy four years later, as his team beat England in the semi-final and gained revenge on holders Argentina in the final. Former England striker Gary Lineker, who played in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, said: "Very sorry to hear that Franz Beckenbauer has died. "One of the absolute greats of our game. Der Kaiser was the most beautiful of footballers who won it all with grace and charm. RIP." Bayern Munich and Germany forward Thomas Muller said: "One of the greatest footballers in the club's history has unfortunately left us. "Rest in peace, Emperor Franz. We will never forget what you have done for football in Germany." Beckenbauer was national team manager from 1984 to 1990 Beckenbauer also managed Marseille briefly in 1990, then had two stints in charge of Bayern, moving into football administration after leaving the role in 1996. He became Bayern's president, took over as vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB) in 1998 and led the German committee that won the right to host the 2006 World Cup. He was one of four men investigated over suspected corruption linked to the tournament. In 2020, the trial ended without a verdict. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, another of Beckenbauer's team-mates and later Bayern's chief executive, said: "He was my captain at FC Bayern, my coach at the national team, our president at Bayern and in all of these roles he was not only successful but unique. "As a personality, he impressed with his great respect for all people - because everyone was equal before Franz. "German football is losing the greatest personality in its history. We will miss him more than painfully." Bernd Neuendorf, president of the DFB, said Beckenbauer was "one of the best players our sport has ever seen". "With him, we are losing a unique footballer and a loveable person," he said. "With his lightness, his elegance and his overview, he set standards on the field. "Franz Beckenbauer leaves a great legacy for the DFB and football as a whole." Football world pays tribute Gianni Infantino, president of world football's governing body Fifa, called Beckenbauer "a legend of German and world football". "Der Kaiser was a really great person, a friend of football a champion and a real legend. We will never forget you, dear Franz," he said. Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said the German's legacy as "one of football's all-time greats is beyond dispute". "His unparalleled versatility, graceful transitions between defence and midfield, impeccable ball control and visionary style reshaped the way football was played in his era," he said. In a statement, the Premier League said: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Franz Beckenbauer, one of football's greatest ever players. "A World Cup winner as both player and manager, Der Kaiser was as elegant as he was dominant. He will forever be remembered." Peter Shilton, England's goalkeeper in the 1990 semi-final penalty shootout defeat by West Germany, said: "Very sad to hear that the great Franz Beckenbauer has sadly passed away. "He was a fantastic player reaching world class status. RIP #Legend." Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund said they mourned "the loss of a great German footballer". "Rest in peace, Franz Beckenbauer. 'The Kaiser' will be remembered forever. Our thoughts are with his family and all his loved ones." Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish said: "It fills me with deep sadness to hear about the passing of Franz Beckenbauer, a true icon of the game. "It was a privilege to share one of my proudest moments with him when he presented my 100th cap for Scotland. My thoughts are with him and his family at this time." Link
  4. After receiving scores of suggestions due to a video set to the tune of Michael Jackson's classic, the zoo that houses the 3-month-old capybara decided on a fitting moniker. A baby capybara who went viral last week by dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" has been given a new name by her adoring public, a Miami zoo announced on Monday. After receiving scores of suggestions from the community, the Florida foundation that cares for the thrilling 3-month-old giant rodent decided on a name: Eve. “[She] arrived to us at the foundation on Christmas Eve, so it was only fitting, and one of our supporters nailed it by suggesting,” Matt Dillon, spokesperson for the Zoological Wildlife Foundation, told NBC News about the new name. Eve gained internet fame after a video captured her taking a morning dip in the pool, set to "Thriller," as she appeared to be imitating the famous choreography from the classic Michael Jackson music video. The clip went viral and has almost 125 million views on Instagram alone. The online audience is loving her dancing skills. “Michael Jackson, reincarnated,” one commenter wrote on the post. Others find Eve relatable, with one commenter saying, “me in the 5 foot pool area.” “It’s exciting to see our latest edition to the family receive such a globally warm reception,” Dillon said. “And with the viral interest and eyes globally on us, we are excited to share more of Eve’s journey.” Visitors can meet the “newly minted superstar capybara” in person starting this week as she begins encounters with the public, the foundation said Link
  5. Changes centre primarily around improved aero, but we expect a small drivetrain upgrade to also be issued Mugen, the tuning and motorsport division of Honda, has teased two new variants of the current-generation Civic Type R (FL5). Dubbed the ‘Gr.A’ and ‘Gr.B’, the upgrades focus largely on improved aero through revised bodywork. Finished in Rallye Red, the Gr.A takes things up a notch from the already bonkers standard car with an all-new front bumper design, which mates a wider front lip with larger vents on either side. Bigger side skirts are also seen along the flanks, while a more pronounced rear spoiler, which is both wider and longer than the original, sits as proudly at the back as Joffrey Baratheon did on the Iron Throne. It's likely to contribute to an even more chaotic experience, just like Joffrey did too. With the Gr.B, an even bigger front splitter and side skirts can be seen, complemented by a more dramatic bonnet and front arch vents. The exposed mesh front grille has also been ditched in favour of a more aggressive, race car-esque closed design. The new parts look to be made of carbon fibre on the Gr.B and dominate the silver coat, resulting in the sort of mock-up you’d find in the back of a six-year-old’s maths book. No word yet on any mechanical changes, but Mugen tends to make small power and handling improvements to any standard Honda model it fettles with. So expect a marginal increase over the 315bhp, 310lb ft of torque and 171mph top speed provided by the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which is already aided by some sort of mechanical wizardy called ‘VTEC’. Pricing is also being kept hush, but we expect the standard car’s starting price of £47k to be pushed closer to the £55k threshold. Founded in 1973 by Hirotoshi Honda, Mugen Motorsport was essentially created to spark the manufacturer’s motorsport pedigree in competitions like the Japanese Super GT championship, and even partnered up for a stint in Formula One. Away from its on-track antics, Mugen is also known for modifying factory Honda models to make them a bit more appealing to rowdies and juveniles alike. Link
  6. The former president also contended the charges against him should be tossed on due process and double jeopardy grounds. Former President Donald Trump is moving to have the election interference charges against him in Georgia thrown out, arguing he's protected by presidential immunity. Trump has made the same argument in the federal election interference case against him, which has been paused until an appeals court hears arguments on Trump's claim on Tuesday. "The indictment is barred by presidential immunity and should be dismissed with prejudice," the Fulton County Superior Court filing Monday said, arguing "the power to indict a current or former President for official acts does not exist.” Prosecutors have argued that Trump was acting outside the scope of his duties when he pressured officials in the state to reject the 2020 election results in the state, which Joe Biden won. Trump also filed two other motions to dismiss the case on Monday, one arguing the charges violate his rights to due process and the other contending it exposes him to double jeopardy. The due process motion claims that Trump didn't have fair notice that he was doing anything illegal by pushing his stolen election claims. Separately, his attorneys also argue the case should be tossed because he was tried and acquitted on related charges before the U.S. Senate during his second impeachment, citing double jeopardy. Trump is facing felony racketeering and conspiracy charges for trying to subvert the 2020 election results in Georgia. He is among 19 defendants charged last August by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The former president has pleaded not guilty and maintains the case is part of a political “witch hunt” against him. “President Trump has filed three persuasive, meritorious pretrial motions seeking a complete dismissal of the indictment and thus an end to the Fulton County District Attorney’s politically-based prosecution," Trump attorney Steve Sadow said in a statement. The DA’s office declined to comment. Willis, a Democrat, has denied that the case is politically motivated and said she charged Trump and the 18 co-defendants in his case because they broke Georgia law. Link
  7. The company behind America's latest mission to soft-land on the Moon is battling to save the project. Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic says its Peregrine spacecraft has a faulty propulsion system that's losing "critical" amounts of fuel. The issue has already made it difficult for the craft to point its solar panels at the Sun to generate electricity and may now scupper the planned touch-down. Astrobotic has begun talking about reassessing its mission goals. In other words, it's thinking about what can be salvaged from its original objectives. The 1.2-tonne lander was launched early on Monday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a Vulcan rocket. Its aim was to become the first American mission in half a century to make a controlled landing on the Moon and the first ever commercial endeavour to achieve the feat. The US space agency (Nasa) had purchased capacity on the lander for five instruments to study the lunar surface environment ahead of sending astronauts there later this decade. The 1.2-tonne Peregrine spacecraft is one of a clutch of US projects aiming to land in 2024 Peregrine's problems emerged shortly after communications had been established with ground controllers, following its release from the top of the Vulcan. Engineers noticed the spacecraft was struggling to maintain a stable lock on the Sun, meaning its solar cells were not receiving a constant supply of sunshine to recharge the onboard battery. Power levels were reported to be reaching operationally low levels. Astrobotic's engineers eventually identified the root cause as a failure in the propulsion system. And although they were able to successfully re-point the spacecraft and charge the battery, it was evident, the company said, that Peregrine was losing propellant. "The team is working to try and stabilise this loss, but given the situation we have prioritised maximising the science and data we can capture," a statement read. "We are currently assessing what alternative mission profiles may be feasible at this time." Not since Apollo 17 in 1972 has the US soft-landed a spacecraft on the lunar surface Astrobotic is the first of three US companies to send a lander to the Moon this year under a new private-public partnership with Nasa. The agency is buying transport services from the Pittsburgh firm and two other commercial ventures - Intuitive Machines and Firefly. Together, the trio had planned six missions to the lunar surface in 2024. All three US companies have Nasa as a "customer", but the agency is "not in charge" of their projects. It is the firms themselves who have designed the spacecraft and are in command as the missions progress. Nasa believes this arrangement will introduce more innovation and reduce costs over time. And the agency says it is prepared for some of the missions not to work. Speaking to the BBC last month, deputy administrator Pam Melroy, said: "What we have learned from our commercial partners is if we have a high enough cadence, we can relax some of the requirements that make it so costly, and have a higher risk appetite. And if they fail, the next one is going to learn and succeed." Link

  10. The deadly Sydney funnel-web spider, dubbed “Hercules,” was found on the Central Coast, about 50 miles north of Sydney. A male specimen of the Sydney funnel-web spider, the world's most poisonous arachnid. SYDNEY — With fangs that could pierce a human fingernail, the largest male specimen of the world’s most venomous arachnid has found a new home at the Australian Reptile Park where it will help save lives after a member of the public discovered it by chance. The deadly Sydney funnel-web spider dubbed “Hercules” was found on the Central Coast, about 50 miles north of Sydney, and was initially given to a local hospital, the Australian Reptile Park said in a statement Thursday. Spider experts from the nearby park retrieved it and soon realized it was the largest male specimen ever received from the public in Australia. The spider measured 7.9 centimeters (3.1 inches) from foot to foot, surpassing the park’s previous record-holder from 2018, the male funnel-web named “Colossus”. Sydney funnel-web spiders usually range in length from one to five centimeters, with females being generally larger than their male counterparts but not as deadly. They are predominantly found in forested areas and suburban gardens from Sydney, Australia’s most populous city, to the coastal city of Newcastle in the north and the Blue Mountains to the west. “Hercules” will contribute to the reptile park’s antivenom program. Safely captured spiders handed in by the public undergo “milking” to extract venom, essential for producing life-saving antivenom “We’re used to having pretty big funnel-web spiders donated to the park, however receiving a male funnel-web this big is like hitting the jackpot,” said Emma Teni, a spider keeper at Australian Reptile Park. “Whilst female funnel-web spiders are venomous, males have proven to be more lethal." “With having a male funnel-web this size in our collection, his venom output could be enormous, proving incredibly valuable for the park’s venom program.” Since the inception of the program in 1981, there has not been a fatality in Australia from a funnel-web spider bite. Recent rainy, humid weather along Australia’s east coast has provided the ideal conditions for funnel-web spiders to thrive. Link
  11. Volkswagen UK has opened the order books for the revamped T-Cross. The based-on-a-Polo-but-not-just-a-Polo-SUV crossover starts from only £23,965. So what does that get you? There’s some subtle front end finessing on the updated T-Cross. All the LED lights you could ever hope for, including the brand’s IQ.LIGHT matrix headlights available as an option. In the cabin, there’s been ‘a complete redesign’ according to Volkswagen. Taking cues from larger VW models, the dash panel now features cloth and high-quality trims – a finish that is expanded to the door cards in the Style and R-Line models. VW tells us the freestanding centre console screen – sized 8.0in or 9.2in, depending on your spec – and a new digital cockpit create the focal point for the interior. The brand is keen to emphasise the car now has a wider scope of driver assistance technology, with the integration of dynamic road sign detection. It’s also integrated ‘Travel Assist’ as standard – that’s gives the T-Cross some self-piloting functionality which appears to go beyond simple traffic jam assist. More than just handling the simple ‘stop and go’ in congestion, the T-Cross will navigate itself around bends and roundabouts “within the system’s limits”. VW doesn’t specify exactly what they are but legally, you won’t be able to sit in a self-piloting car beyond 37mph in the UK…and that’s provided the model you’re driving is on the government’s list of permitted cars. (FYI, according the gov.uk website “At present, there are no self-driving vehicle listed for use in Great Britain.” Watch this space for updates). The T-Cross is available with nine engine choices, rated from 93bhp for the entry-level T-Cross Life with a five-speed manual transmission. That 1.0-litre TSI engine pushes power up to 112bhp for the R-Line seven-speed automatic, priced at £30,205, but the R-Line range tops out with a 1.5-litre autobox, generating 147bhp and costing £31,660. Some will be interested to note the towbar load is now capable of shifting 75kg (up from 55), too. VW has sold over 1.2 million units of the T-Cross since its launch four years ago, but there’s no mention of any electric powertrain. Should we be bothered? Link
  12. The former president has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling in Colorado that he is ineligible to appear on the state primary ballot because of his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas at the White House in October 2020. A group of House Democrats on Thursday called on conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from a case involving former President Donald Trump's eligibility to appear on Colorado's Republican primary ballot. Trump on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to overturn a Colorado court ruling last month that disqualified him from appearing on the ballot over his conduct leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The former president’s appeal came after the state’s Republican Party filed its own appeal of the Colorado Supreme Court's decision. The state court put its ruling on hold to allow for appeals, meaning Trump could remain on the ballot pending U.S. Supreme Court action. A group of House Democrats, led by Rep. Hank Johnson, of Georgia, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee’s courts subcommittee, demanded that Thomas recuse himself from the case in a letter dated Thursday. The letter says Thomas should recuse himself because his wife, conservative activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, was an outspoken supporter of Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. “This time, we must urge you to recuse yourself from any involvement in the case of Anderson v. Griswold, because your impartiality is reasonably questioned by substantial numbers of fair-minded members of the public, who believe you wife Virginia ('Ginni') Thomas’s substantial involvement in the events leading up to the January 6 insurrection, and the financial incentive it presents for your household if President Trump is re-elected, are disqualifying,” the lawmakers wrote. The letter cited Ginni Thomas’ attendance at the “Stop the Steal” rally that took place before the Capitol attack, and said, “Not only did your wife attend the January 6 rally, but she was instrumental in planning it and bringing the insurrectionists to the Capitol.” “Your wife was one of nine board members for a conservative political group that helped lead the 'Stop the Steal' movement, a movement which culminated in the January 6 attack that the Colorado Supreme Court deemed an insurrection,” the lawmakers wrote. “It is unthinkable that you could be impartial in deciding whether an event your wife personally organized qualifies as an ‘insurrection’ that would prevent someone from holding the office of President.” A spokesperson for the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment on the letter. Democratic Reps. Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, Glenn Ivey of Maryland, Gerald Connolly of Virginia, Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, Jasmine Crockett of Texas, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Dan Goldman of New York also signed the letter. Thomas in October recused himself in a case related to the Capitol attack that involves former Trump legal adviser John Eastman, who previously worked as one of Thomas' law clerks. Thomas, as common practice for court justices, did not provide an explanation for his recusal. But Thomas continues to face scrutiny for refusing to recuse himself from several other Jan. 6-related cases, including one involving whether Trump has presidential immunity from federal prosecution. Johnson last month led a letter asking Thomas to recuse himself from that case, again citing his wife’s conservative activism. The Supreme Court last month denied special counsel Jack Smith’s request to step in ahead of the normal appeals process. Link
  13. President Macron has said in the past he drinks wine twice a day France's President Emmanuel Macron has been accused of caving in to the wine lobby by failing to lend his weight to an alcohol-free "Dry January". Fifty specialists on addiction wrote an open letter this week, lamenting the lack of government support for the post-festivity no-drinks campaign. "Our confidence in the government to carry out a coherent and determined policy against alcoholism is seriously compromised," the doctors wrote. Dry January came to France in 2020. In their letter to Le Monde newspaper, the doctors said the Défi de janvier (January Challenge) had become a po[CENSORED]r social fixture since it was introduced from the UK, but its success had been achieved in the teeth of government indifference. Several ministers have indeed distanced themselves from the call for a teetotal month, saying they preferred to encourage moderation rather than an outright booze-fast. Marc Fesneau, the agriculture minister, said the overall decline in French alcohol consumption - down 70% in the last half century, and down 7-10% last year alone - made the Dry January campaign irrelevant and intrusive. "I don't think the French need to be given lessons by anyone. People are fed up with being told what to eat, what to drink, how to travel. There's a way of life that also deserves respect," he said. "I'd be very suspicious if I heard the government was telling people how to live their lives for a month," said former health minister Aurélien Rousseau when asked in early December, before his resignation, about whether he was joining Dry January. For critics these reactions are all signs that the government, taking its cue from President Macron, has decided it is more important not to offend the wine lobby than to promote good health. "We know full well that with this government, and above all with this president, the links with the alcohol lobby are particularly strong," said addictologist Jean-Pierre Couteron. Supporters of Dry January say France is still Europe's fourth largest consumer of alcohol, and that alcohol is responsible for more than 40,000 French deaths every year. And they say that a campaign that enjoyed government financial and moral backing would reach far more people than the 16,000 who signed up in 2023. The allegation that the president personally discouraged support for Dry January is backed by his very public endorsement of alcohol in the past. In 2022 he was elected Personality of the Year by the Review of French Wines magazine after he said he drank wine twice every day, at lunch and at dinner. Last June he was filmed downing a bottle of Corona beer in one, in the changing room of the Stade Toulousain rugby team at the Stade de France - inviting accusations that he was encouraging binge drinking. With the wine industry bringing in €9bn (£7.7bn; $10bn) in foreign sales every year, the decision to champion French winemakers is certainly rational. But critics say drinking publicly is also partly a man-of-the-people act that the president puts on to counter the charge that he is "out-of-touch". Link
