As the deadline for the government to respond to the House of Representatives’ second attempt to deliberate the controversial tobacco bill approaches, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration has finally moved to assess whether discussing the bill would be worth it or not. The President has appointed Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto to lead the talk on deciding the official governments’ stance of the deliberation of the tobacco bill. Speaking at the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Ministry’s office on Thursday, Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki said Wiranto had been tasked with gathering and coordinating input from related ministries to decide the bill’s fate, which was hanging in the balance because of disagreements among ministries, particularly the Health Ministry and the Industry Ministry. “The tobacco industry is a huge deal for us. There are still many aspects that we have to consider, so the government’s position should be objective in this case,” Teten said. Studies from ministries related to the tobacco issue, including from the Health Ministry, the Industry Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Home Ministry and the Agriculture Ministry, would be gathered and assessed by a team at Wiranto’s office to ensure that all aspects were considered before any decision was made, Teten said. “We just began the coordination since March 18 is the deadline to issue the presidential letter ... Whether the letter would be sent or not, it is up to the results of the assessment by the coordinating minister’s office,” Teten added. Previously on Tuesday, State Secretary Pratikno said the bill was being discussed by the Industry Ministry, the Manpower Ministry, the Health Ministry and the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister, leaving out Wiranto’s office. The tobacco bill, which seeks to triple cigarette production to 524 billion by 2020, was initially rejected from the 2016 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) by the Health Ministry, which was appointed by Jokowi to lead the discussion at the House. However, the comeback of Golkar politician Setya Novanto as House Speaker paved the way for the inclusion of the bill in the 2017 national legislative program. The Health Ministry has long campaigned for stronger tobacco control, which is crucial to saving around 200,000 Indonesians who die every year due to tobacco-related illnesses and to save Rp 378 trillion (US$28 billion) in economic losses caused by smoking. The Jokowi administration, however, has been seeking to boost tobacco production to improve the welfare of tobacco farmers, an argument used by lawmakers in their efforts to pass the tobacco bill, which would require tobacco companies to use 80 percent local tobacco in their products. In 2015, former industry minister Saleh Husin issued a 2020 tobacco road map that had targeted to triple current cigarette production. However, the ministerial regulation was annulled by the Supreme Court last year, on the grounds that increasing cigarette production was incompatible with child protection and public health, among other reasons. Anti-tobacco activists have repeatedly made calls for Jokowi to kill the tobacco bill by not sending a presidential letter to the House as the bill was deemed to protect only the interests of the tobacco industry and has neglected health considerations. Women’s activist organization Women’s Network for Tobacco Products Control (JP3T) added their voice to the growing calls from activists to reject the controversial bill. “I believe anyone who loves their children should reject this [bill], because we, as parents, want our children to be better than our generation,” said Henny Supolo Sitepu, chairperson of the Yayasan Cahaya Guru teacher’s foundation.

Wagyu from Japan is often held up as the best beef in the world. The meat is tender as the night. It’s so soft, steak knives are optional. Its marbled fat dissolves into a buttery flavor so rich it could retire to Florida. The cattle lead a relatively pampered life. They are registered with the Japanese government soon after birth and raised according to strict regulations, though the idea that they are all raised on a diet of beer and Beethoven is something of an exaggeration. You pay for the privilege, of course. At Wolfgang Puck’s CUT in Beverly Hills, US$140 will get you 4 ounces of USDA Prime aged 35 days but only 2 oz. of wagyu from Japan’s Miyazaki prefecture. It must be brilliant, right? “I hate the stuff,” says Richard Turner, butcher and author of Prime: The Beef Cookbook (Mitchell Beazley, 2017), which will be published in the U.K. this week and in the U.S. in May. “It slaps you around the head and then trails off quickly. Some people like that, but I’m an Englishman, and I like my beefy flavor to last.” After the European Union lifted a ban on Japanese beef in 2014, restaurants in London started experimenting with wagyu, which translates to Japanese cow. The U.K. quickly became the largest importer in Europe, bringing in nearly 47,000 kilograms (1.7 million ounces) in 2016, according to Zen-Noh group, the business arm of Japan’s largest agricultural cooperative. The meat is showing up at high-end Japanese establishments, as well as less-expensive restaurants, where it may feature in sushi or fusion dishes. At Anzu, a brasserie in St James’s Market in London, wagyu beef tataki with sesame and soy dressing is a po[CENSORED]r dish, at £18 ($22). But even Anzu’s chef and co-owner Ken Yamada says it must be eaten in small bites. “I don’t think anyone can eat a slab of it and feel comfortable,” says Yamada, who was born in Shimoda, south of Tokyo, and moved to the U.K. in 1988. “I may have been in England far too long, but I prefer a decent, British, aged steak.” I’ve set off around London to see what some of the city’s best chefs can do with wagyu. Along for the ride is Yoshinori Ishii, who holds two Michelin stars at Japanese spot Umu, in London’s Mayfair neighborhood. The day starts at CUT at 45 Park Lane, which serves A5 wagyu from Kagoshima. (The meat is graded from A to C for yield and from 5 to 1 for quality, with A5 the top rating.) CUT’s style of cooking is different from that in Japan, where diners consume much smaller portions. Chef Gwenaul Lalloz at CUT says it is his favorite beef. London prices start at £140 for 6 oz. of Japanese wagyu New York sirloin. Middle Eastern diners are particular fans. “We sell 20 to 25 kilos (44 to 55 pounds) a week when we are lucky enough to get this kind of meat, which sometimes is not really easy,” he says, citing supplier bottlenecks of certain cuts. At Bella Cosa, an Italian restaurant in Canary Wharf, chef Kentaro Torii occasionally puts wagyu on the menu as a promotion. Lucky for us, he has specially prepared a fusion dish of fagottini pasta with gorgonzola filling. Bite after bite, I’m loving it, but Ishii’s mind is elsewhere. He is excitedly recalling the Galician aged beef he ate recently across town: “It was amazing,” Ishii says. We then head to Yashin Ocean House in Kensington, where chef Shinya Ikeda regularly serves wagyu as sushi, as well as sukiyaki—meat simmered with vegetables in a soy sauce broth—with candy floss that melts into it. Mark Schatzker, who wrote Steak: One Man’s Search for the World’s Tastiest Piece of Beef (Penguin, 2011). decided Japanese wagyu wasn’t the answer he sought. “It’s a great and wonderful thing,” he says, “But it’s not steak. It’s completely different. It’s more like foie gras. Steak is bloody: You know you are eating an animal. It satisfies your inner cave man. Wagyu is more refined—and I don’t mean superior.” Schatzker says he prefers more traditional beef, including organic grass-fed from Alderspring Ranch in Idaho and Naked Beef from Joyce Farms in North Carolina. He’s also a fan of British breeds, including Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, and Galloway. We end with a French take at the Greenhouse, an upscale kitchen in Mayfair, where wagyu is on the menu from time to time. For us, Executive Chef Arnaud Bignon has prepared the meat with Chantenay carrots, carrot puree, grapefruit, and black sesame, with tamarind. “Diners love Japanese wagyu, and if you have a small portion, the way they do in Japan, it is OK,” Bignon says. “I like to use it sometimes, but not too much.” At Umu, not all of Ishii’s customers understand or fully appreciate his wagyu, which he gets from Gunma prefecture and prefers to the better-known Kobe variety. Some say it’s too fatty, and he explains that the marbling melts as it cooks. But then, some customers just think it’s regular red meat. “A few weeks ago, I had a fight with a customer because he said we are not using Japanese wagyu,” he said. Is Japanese wagyu Ishii’s favorite meat? “It is a beautiful experience,” he says. But if he wants beef at home, he stops at a local grocery store to pick up some Scottish aged beef. “I love real cow flavor,” he says. I’m going to take that as a no.

Residents of Manggroholo village and Sira village in South Sorong, West Papua province, rejoiced on Thursday as their villages were the first in Papua to have their rights to manage the island’s forests acknowledged by the government. The South Sorong administration handed over the hutan desa (village forest) permits to representatives of the villagers on Thursday. The Environment and Forestry Ministry defines a “village forest” as a state forest not encumbered by previous rights and managed by a village to improve its welfare. Fredrik Sagisolo, the head of a local indigenous community alliance, said he expected the permit issuance to be followed by the recognition of other hutan desa in West Papua. “We wanted our customary land rights to be wholly recognized because we knew that we had a lot of potential, but it was not us who managed the potential,” he said. Greenpeace Indonesia heralded the acknowledgment as a landmark decision as it marked the first time villagers in Papua received rights to manage their own forests under the village forest scheme. The scheme was part of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s land reform plan, which included the distribution of 12.7 million hectares of land access to local communities, villagers and indigenous people. “After almost 10 years of fighting, finally today our friends received a permit to manage hutan desa, which will allow freedom and sovereignty in managing hutan desa,” Greenpeace Indonesia forest campaigner Kiki Taufik said during the permit-giving ceremony in Teminabuan, South Sorong. He said the villagers had been fighting for their rights to manage around 3,500 hectares of forests from palm oil companies that wanted to convert the forest areas into oil palm plantations since 2013.

The deputy chairman of House of Representative’s Commission II overseeing bureaucratic reform, Lukman Edy, has suggested that members of regional legislative councils should not be obliged to resign if they run for regional head positions. The 2016 Regional Elections Law sti[CENSORED]tes that regional councillors shall resign should they be nominated as regional head candidates. Lukman argued, however, that such a requirement could make councillors hesitant to become candidates while they actually had potential and the capacity to serve as regional heads. “Parties' best members may think they could lose the councillor post [if they lose the race], therefore, they do not want to leave their legislative posts,” said the National Awakening Party (PKB) politician. That is why the simultaneous elections in 101 regions, last month, lacked quality politicians among candidates, he added. Lukman also said many of the election winners were incumbent candidates because the law only required incumbents to take leave during the campaign period. He said he believed by scrapping the requirement for councillors to resign, regional elections would see more good candidates in addition to the incumbents.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud smiled and waved as 50 young girls performed a dance to welcome his arrival in Bali on Saturday. Wearing colorful Balinese outfits and holding flower bouquets in their hands, the young dancers from dance group Sanggar Sawitri enthusiastically performed the Balinese Pendet dance, which is traditionally staged to honor guests. The dance normally takes around eight minutes, but based on a request from the Saudi Arabian security advance team, it was shortened to five minutes. Bali administration spokesperson Dewa Mahendra said King Salman looked happy when the dance was performed as he disembarked from the aircraft. “He was waving hands and smiling,” Dewa said. The king shook hands with officials upon his arrival, including Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika and Bali Police chief Insp. General Petrus R. Golose. Several other prominent figures also welcomed the king. They included the chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Parisada Hindu Council (PHDI), IGN Sudiana, Bali Interfaith Communication Forum (FKUB) chairman Ida Pengelingsir Agung Putra Sukahet and Bali Customary Village High Council (MUDP) head Jero Gede Suwena. “King Salman shook hands with them all," Dewa explained. “We are very proud that we could show our Balinese traditional dance to the King and his entourage.”

The ubiquitous vocaloid and cyber diva Hatsune Miku has landed yet another marketing job. This time, the virtual songstress is inviting travelers to enjoy various Japanese cuisine. This tie-up has been thought up by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). Miku will be introducing travelers to different cuisines from various locales in Japan, reports RocketNews24. Miku is also sporting a different and more casual appearance that’s also less anime-looking, possibly to make her look closer to reality and easier to relate to. There’s even a music video sung by Miku herself to further promote the “Oishii” Trip. Be sure to check out Taste of Japan, the official site for Miku’s Oishii trip for a little bit more information on this MAFF and Hatsune Miku collaboration. There’s even some lyrics near the bottom of the site for those who want to sing along with Miku. In the past, Hatsune Miku has even starred in her own Lux commercial, alongside Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson. What will this virtual idol be doing next?

Indonesia and Australia have agreed that peaceful resolutions in line with international law is the best way to solving any disputes in the region. The conclusion was made during a bilateral meeting between President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his counterpart Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Sunday, the final day of Jokowi's first state visit to Australia. The two leaders, however, did not specifically discuss the possibility of wanting Canberra to take part in joint patrols in the South China Sea, which was much anticipated after Jokowi reportedly had hinted at prior to his arrival in Sydney. “We [Australia and Indonesia] have a vested interest in the peace and stability for our regions, seas and oceans,” Turnbull said in a joint press statement following his bilateral meeting with Jokowi. “So, we both strongly encourage countries in our region to resolve disputes in accordance with the international law, which is the foundation for stability and prosperity,” he added. During a recent interview with The Australian, Jokowi said he saw that joint Indonesia-Australia patrols in the South China Sea, potentially around Natuna Islands at the sea's southern edge, as “very important” as long as it did not raise regional tension. According to Jokowi, he would discuss the issue with Turnbull while visiting Australia. Before Jokowi's controversial suggestion, which has sparked concern from various elements at home, the Indonesian government—a non-claimant in the ongoing sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea—has continually emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the disputed waters, especially between all claimant parties, urging restraint of any action that could raise tensions. The meeting also marked the mending of military ties between the two countries after a recent hiccup in a joint-military training operation that resulted in Jakarta partially suspending defense cooperation. “President Widodo and I have agreed to the full restoration of defense cooperation, training exchanges and activities," Turnbull said. Jokowi said the meeting "has clearly demonstrated our profound commitment to promoting bilateral cooperation". Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi confirmed the meeting never touched on the issue of joint Indonesia-Australia patrols in the disputed sea.

It’s been a while since Spotify introduced the ability to stream podcasts through its app, but it’s now taking the next logical step and producing its own content, with the introduction of three music-themed shows. Showstopper is the first to release and promises to “bring together two of the most culturally relevant topics of our time: TV shows and music.” Hosted by Naomi Zeichner, editor of The Fader magazine, the series is set to cover the small screen's most massive musical moments, from TV shows like Stranger Things and Scrubs, through interviews with the people responsible. The first episode is available now, focusing on the cult-hit series, Girls, and features interviews with creator, writer and star, Lena Dunham, alongside music supervisor, Manish Raval. Spotify’s second offering, Unpacked, is due to premiere on March 14 and will feature daily interviews with cultural curators at festivals across the US, kicking off with Austin’s renowned South by Southwest. The last podcast on the bill is perhaps the most intriguing – premiering sometime in April, The Chris Lighty Story (a working title) is said to cover the life, death, and influence of the titular music industry executive who was best known for having a hand in the career of influential hip hop heavyweights, 50 Cent, Missy Elliott, LL Cool J, and Foxy Brown. More Spotify originals will be announced later this year, and you can already find the first episode of Showstopper under Spotify’s podcast section in the US and UK, although there is currently no indication that the shows will be made available in Australia.

The recent increase in promoting a healthy lifestyle indicate that Indonesians realize the importance of being healthy. One or two indicators are the rising po[CENSORED]rity of yoga classes held in parks and wholesome food cooking workshops that always attract participants. Unfortunately, health experts say that this awareness doesn’t seem to match the desire to be steadily engaged in health-building activities, as some people want to be in good physical shape with the least effort. These people argue that they have limited time to exercise so they seek the quickest way to gain the best results. Thus, it is no surprise that health products with fantastic claims, like detoxifiers and supplements, are becoming widespread. These products are promoted with claims of having special qualities that supposedly help maintain health and cure illnesses. Various foods claimed to be natural, organic and free from preservatives are also offered at far higher prices than the actual value of similar products. Despite their exorbitant prices, these kinds of products are in high demand among urban people obsessed with health. The purchase of these products has also been influenced by role models making claims of the effects they enjoyed. And if such statements come from within their closest circle, people tend to be more convinced. However, nutritionist Jansen Ongko suggests that consumers should always be critical and question everything connected with supplements and nutrients. “Although the people promoting or benefiting from certain products are close friends, physical conditions respond in different ways,” he said. He explained that what worked well for one person would not necessarily work for another. Marius Widjajarta from the Health Product Consumer Empowerment Foundation regretted the promotional campaigns for certain supplements and drugs that sometimes go beyond propriety. He referred to a Food and Drug Monitoring Agency regulation sti[CENSORED]ting that supplements and drugs should not be promoted by doctors or people dressed like doctors. “The public isn’t aware of this and the authorities seem to take no action,” he said. Jansen and Marius agreed that to be smart consumers, people needed to have sufficient knowledge. Be skeptical and use common sense, they said when asked on separate occasions. For example, it’s illogical to expect health supplements to be effective for different complaints. “Even drugs now widely sold are only targeted at a specified number of diseases,” said Marius, appealing for caution against so-called super drugs being hyped to cure a wide range of illnesses. Marius also argued that supplements should belong to the category of dietary supplements rather than drugs. “Also included in this group are herbal and home industry products such as juice, yoghurt and the like,” he explained, believing that products that are not listed as drugs should not be claimed to cure illnesses. While feeling happy to see people being health conscious, Jansen and Marius still saw the need to provide direction. “It takes time and perseverance to be healthy, which can’t be brought about all at once,” said Jansen. Exercise and wholesome foods are the key to health and nobody can lose much weight quickly just by regularly taking a supplement or replacing a meal with a drink, for example. Although one is on a diet for weight loss, the body’s food intake should be complete, with carbohydrates, protein, fiber and fat. Only the food quantity has to be adjusted, they said. A single-food diet is only to be followed as instructed by a physician for the cure or prevention of a particular disease. Expecting the government to proactively deal with violations in the marketing sector, Marius and Jansen also hoped that the public could carry out self-education in health matters. It would be better to ask your doctor upon finding supplements or drugs with bombastic promises, they advised. “If you have no personal health counselor, health websites can be consulted as some of them have reliable specialists,”

Introduction There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a system boot up almost instantaneously when the power switch is hit. Long gone are the days of going to make yourself a brew while those spinning platters buzz and the display kicks into life, lazily dragging you into the GUI you call home. But surely that luxury of speed is reserved for those who are willing to drop £1,000+ on a new system? Fortunately, this is not the case anymore. With advancements in technology over the last six years, and Intel’s aggressive push to keep reinvigorating its chipsets each and every generation, we’re starting to see more and more affordable budget, speed-oriented components finally making it to market. The SSD has succeeded the hard drive with sub 10-second boot times and lightning quick file transfers. However, three years on and we’ve seen both the rise and fall of the SATA III bus. This was a standard that was supposed to last us until 2020, but now lies completely saturated, with only the ever enduring HDD still making good use of the connectivity. Fortunately for us, workarounds have been found in the search for ever increasing performance and ever increasing speed. Utilising the PCIe bus to transfer data to and from any hard drive to the processor has proved to provide almost limitless potential when it comes to file transfer speeds – at least for the time being. And as M.2 and U.2 PCIe SSDs have matured, so too have their sequential read and writes, alongside a continual plummet in cost to produce them. What this has led to is the potential to piece together a system for just over £400. And that’s a system we intend to walk you through today. A system including an Intel Core i5-6500 quad-core processor, one of the latest chipsets featuring the lightning fast and insanely energy efficient DDR4 memory standard, alongside a PCIe M.2 SSD. In our case, we’ve opted for one of Samsung’s OEM PM961 M.2 drives, specifically the 128GB variant.
