It took the 17-year-old almost seven hours overnight in the freezing cold to get the perfect shot By Bea Swallow BBC News Teenage photographers hope to use their talent to "preserve wildlife and spread awareness" of ecological conservation. Christopher, 17, from Wiltshire, won runner up in the 16-18 category of the prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2023 for his black and white photo of a badger. Hope, 11, from Gloucestershire, secured top spot in the under 12 category with her close-up submission of an insect. The pair said they enjoy capturing the "small moments" around them. The competition, hosted by wildlife broadcaster Chris Packham, showcases UK wildlife taken by the next generation of photographers aged 18 and under.Submissions ranged from jumping spiders to jellyfish, but Christopher's black and white shot was captured in an urban garden where he scattered a handful of peanuts to lure the animal close to his camera. "I thought the backlit composition would be really interesting on a badger, and it was, it made it look really unique and almost like a bear," he said. "You only get two or three attempts at it because you don't want to startle the animal and scare it away." Christopher has applied to study ecology and conservation at university next year and dreams of working as a cameraman on a wildlife documentary. "Some of the best work for conservation has come from films that have received large scale attention," he said. "I believe taking good pictures and videos of wildlife is the best way to spread awareness of different issues in ecology and hope that I can play a part in that."Hope named her image Guardians of the Galaxy due to the sparkles in the car paint Hope's winning image is of an oak-bush cricket on a car bonnet. "I really liked the nice sparkles and that the cricket looked like they were in space. I like being out in nature as I find it calming when a lot of other things can feel quite over-sensory," she said.Hope, who has autism, explained that she sees things differently to other people and she hopes that through her photos people will be able to see the world in a whole new way. "I used to take photos when I was younger but I stopped when I started school, but when it was lockdown I rediscovered my talent and I've just been taking photos ever since," she added. "She wants to work with wildlife and she's really creative," her mum Emma said. "I think she just enjoys creating and telling stories to get people to think, so she's written a musical as well about the environment." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-wiltshire-67790943

The Israeli PM chairing a cabinet meeting on Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the Gaza war has come at a "very heavy price" for his side. The military says more than a dozen soldiers have been killed in the territory since Friday, bringing the total of the ground assault to 154. Saturday was one of its deadliest days - but the Israeli PM there was "no choice" but to keep fighting. Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza - run by Hamas - says another 166 people were killed in the last day. More than 20,000 people have been killed - mostly women and children, and 54,000 injured in Gaza since 7 October, the minist ry says.Remarking on the latest Israeli troop deaths, Mr Netanyahu said: "This is a difficult morning, after a very difficult day of fighting in Gaza." But he said his forces would continue with "full force until the end", reiterating his goals of eliminating Hamas and ensuring the safe return of hostages held in Gaza. "Let it be clear: this will be a long war," the Israeli prime minister added. The military's 154th death was announced later that day: tank commander Maj Aryeh Rein. In a separate statement, the military said it had killed more than 8,000 Palestinian fighters during its campaign to date - in remarks quoted by the Reuters news agency. The Israeli operation began after Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages. IDF staff sergeant Birhanu Kassie was killed fighting in Gaza on Friday Israel insists that it takes steps to avoid civilian casualties, and blames Hamas for embedding itself in densely-po[CENSORED]ted areas. US President Joe Biden - a key ally of Mr Netanyahu - emphasised the "critical need" to protect civilian lives during a call with the Israeli prime minister on Saturday, the White House said. Mr Biden told reporters that he had not asked for a ceasefire in the call. Both men believe such a move would benefit Hamas. On Friday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution demanding large-scale aid deliveries to Gaza - but this, too, stopped short of calling for a ceasefire between the two warring sides. Talks held in Egypt earlier this week designed to secure a fresh truce between Israel and Hamas have so far failed to deliver results. A Palestinian official familiar with the ceasefire negotiations told the BBC that Egypt presented a new three-stage plan that would begin with a two-week humanitarian truce - which could be extended - during which Hamas would release 40 hostages and Israel would release 120 Palestinian prisoners. This stage would be followed by the formation of an independent body to deal with humanitarian relief and reconstruction, as well as a comprehensive ceasefire and an exchange o f prisoners. Many Palestinians have been forced to flee northern Gaza to the territory's south The Israeli military has kept up its bombing campaign in Gaza - ordering civilians to flee. The UN said the latest evacuation order affected 150,000 people in the middle of the territory. On Saturday, Israel said 700 Palestinian militants had been arrested during its ground offensive to date. It also said one of its fighter jets had killed Hassah Atrash, a man it accused of smuggling weapons into Gaza to arm Hamas. There has been no confirmation from Hamas. The Israeli military has said it has almost full operational control of the north of the Gaza Strip, and is stepping up operations elsewhere. A spokesman has said troops are entering new Hamas strongholds in southern areas. Briefing his cabinet on Sunday, Mr Netanyahu denied suggestions the US president had persuaded him against further expanding his military operation. The Wall Street Journal had reported that Mr Netanyahu had been talked out of attacking Hamas's ally in Lebanon, the Hezbollah group. A government spokesperson told the BBC "the situation in the north... is intolerable" and that Israel was "trying to deter Hezbollah from dragging us into a war". "We will continue making the necessary preparations to repel this threat from the northern border," he added. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67814475

Amazon Echos are increasingly common accessories in homes and there are even many that have both a speaker and a smart screen from the well-known online store in the same room. This can be a problem, since both devices use the same word to activate (which is none other than Alexa). We tell you how to change this before you go crazy. The truth is that Amazon has thought about this situation, which is not crazy at all because there are several models in the Amazon Echo range that are quite cheap. Therefore, you can think about having a speaker to act as an alarm clock and, in addition, a screen to enjoy video calls or online videos . For optimal operation, and always with your voice, the ideal is to change the activation command of the assistant integrated into one of the two devices . The most recommended thing you have to do And, we believe that it is best to do this on the smart screen of the Amazon Echo range , since it is the one that will be used the least in general to get quick responses (and, even, the quality of the speaker is much better for playing music from the phone, to give an example). Therefore, to access the use of the speaker , the ' Alexa' command is maintained , which is the one used by default in this type of device. In the case of the other accessory from the well-known online store, the option that is best to establish is the word ' Echo' , since it is easy to remember and, at the same time, it has to do with the product itself and, therefore, will not be forgotten. Steps to change voice command on Amazon Echo screens One of the good news that exists to do this is that you complete the entire process using the Alexa application that Amazon offers for these types of products. You can download it for iOS at this link and, if what you have is a terminal with Android , you should use this other one . Once you have the app available, you must follow the process shown below:As you have seen, everything is quite simple and without danger , since the official options that exist in the Alexa application for the Amazon Echo are used. Needless to say, if you want to change the activation word again, you can do so by following the same procedure... https://cincodias.elpais.com/cincodias/2023/06/19/gadgets/1687166262_219246.html

Google is preparing the arrival of the option that will allow knowing the state of health of the battery on Android phones, with which it is possible to estimate the useful life, which will be accompanied by information to help reduce degradation. The information that Android currently offers about the battery is limited to the energy consumed and the estimated time of use that remains and the use that has been made of it in the last 24 hours, with a list of the applications that have consumed the most and the percentage. Android also offers options to extend the autonomy, such as saving mode, restriction of 'apps' and the possibility of adapting its duration to the use made of the mobile. However, as of today, it does not offer information about the health of the battery itself, that is, about the degradation that affects this component. Something that Google is already working on, as reported in Android Authority . Specifically, this specialized portal cites the new information page that has been implemented with the December update of the Pixel phones, which shows the manufacturing date and the count of charging cycles. It also informs about the date of first use, charging policy, charging status and health status. The latter, specifically, estimates the current full charge capacity of the battery, given the degradation that this component cycles with charge. In beta 2 of Android 14 QPR2, which Google distributed for Pixel devices on December 11 to correct some errors and improve performance, a new battery health page is included, which would show the status of this element, although it is not activated at the moment. As detailed in Android Authority, this page will show information about the estimated percentage of charge that the battery can currently support compared to when it was new, both before and after a recalibration, as identified in the APK code. This data will be accompanied by tips to help extend the useful life of the battery, and information about the degradation it may present and how it affects the duration of the device's autonomy... https://www.europapress.es/portaltic/software/noticia-android-ofrecera-informacion-salud-bateria-20231222144703.html

The latest BIOS for Intel's recently released Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" CPUs show big gains in both performance and efficiency. Intel Might Have Left Out Optimal Power Management With The Pre-Equipped Firmware As New BIOS Delivers Performance Gains On Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" CPUs Intel's recently released "Core Ultra" Meteor Lake processors have gotten into the hands of their first reviewers & customers. Based on a review by UltrabookReview, Intel's Meteor Lake laptops are equipped with a pre-release BIOS firmware that undermines performance vastly, mainly because it creates inefficiencies within the power delivery process. The review states that Intel has noticed the issue, & is working with partners to provide a fix. As such, ASUS has already made its latest UEFI firmware update bringing in noticeable performance & efficiency improvements.Based on the benchmarks given by UltrabookReview's author, Andrei Girbea, when upgrading the BIOS version to 203, from the previous 201, a 12.5% performance increment is seen in Cinebench testing. The author says that he is compiling data for other applications as well. Following is what he had to state: I reran and updated the Cinebench scores again, with the laptop fresh from a cold boot up. In Cinebench R23, the CPU starts at 50W and ends up around 35W for the best-effort run. For the 10 min loop, it starts at 50W and then gradually drops and stabilizes at around 28W (after about 5-6 minutes it gets to 28W). 201: CineBench R23: CPU 12357 pts (best run), CPU 11342 pts (10 min loop test), CPU Single Core 1751 pts (best run); 203: CineBench R23: CPU 13873 pts (best run), CPU 12132 pts (10 min loop test), CPU Single Core 1761 pts (best run); Yes, 3dmark, Uniengine are on BIOS 203. Everything else except for games and Cinebench R24 are on BIOS 203. Still updating those. via UltrabookReviewAnother interesting fact here is a review done by the famous hardware leaker Golden Pig Upgrade a week ago, which pointed out the same "inefficient power delivery" system in his testing. The reviewer says that there is a scheduling problem due to the early power measurement, and after updating the laptop with the latest firmware, significant improvements are seen in both power draw and performance.Being a new architecture, Intel's Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" CPUs and the respective laptops are bound to see various tuning, optimizations, and similar BIOS firmware updates that would lead to further performance and efficiency enhancements. This is Intel's first chiplet design and we have also reported that Intel is working on a new driver that will address both CPU/GPU performance at lower power modes such as sub-28W. These updates will gradually be rolled out in Q1 2024 when Meteor Lake laptops become accessible to the majority of consumers... https://wccftech.com/intel-core-ultra-meteor-lake-cpus-already-seeing-big-performance-efficiency-improvements-with-updated-bios/

Robinson will spend at least 14 years in jail A teenage boy convicted of murdering a 17-year-old can be named after a judge lifted a reporting restriction. Zak Robinson, 17, was jailed for life on Monday for the murder of Harley Brown in Huddersfield in February. A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also jailed for life after the pair admitted murder at Leeds Crown Court. West Yorkshire Police's Det Supt Alan Weekes said they were "prepared to use appalling violence, almost on a whim". The judge described Harley's killing as a "senseless atrocity".Harley Brown died shortly after he was found with stab injuries on Kings Mill Lane in Huddersfield The court had heard how the pair, who were "under the influence of nitrous oxide", chased Harley along Kings Mill Lane and then attacked him with knives in the early hours after a chance meeting. The boys were aged 14 and 16 at the time of the murder. They had been due to stand trial after pleading not guilty, but last month they changed their pleas to guilty. Robinson, from Dalton in Huddersfield, will serve a minimum jail term of 14 years and six months, while the 15-year-old will spend at least 10 years and three months in prison. In a statement issued after sentencing, Brown's mother said: "You two get to continue with your lives, Harley doesn't, I don't, his sisters don't, his brother doesn't. "You have destroyed a whole family.". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leeds-67791369

Alongside Kent, Norfolk, is the only part of England that has reported infections so far in this outbreak of bluetongue Lewis Adams BBC News, Norfolk Published 6 hours ago Three more cases of the livestock disease bluetongue have been identified by government vets in Norfolk. It followed the confirmation of two cases in cattle at a farm just outside Cantley, near Acle, on 9 December. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) said the latest diagnoses were made within this area. A 10km (6.2 mile) temporary control zone for moving livestock that was imposed earlier this month remained in place. Bluetongue can cause infertility and breathing problems in sheep, cattle and goats. It poses no risk to humans or the food chain, but outbreaks can result in prolonged trade and animal movement restrictions.Bluetongue is a viral infection which affects animals such as cows and sheep All five animals discovered to have had the disease would be humanely culled, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said. Alongside Kent, Norfolk is the only part of England that has reported infections so far in this outbreak of bluetongue. APHA is aware of 27 cases in total. Farmers in Norfolk and the National Farmers Union have warned about a potential for bluetongue to become a major problem, external. What is bluetongue? Bluetongue was discovered for the first time in the UK since 2007 at a farm near Canterbury in Kent on 11 November. It is spread by the bite of midges and could cause painful ulcers and swelling around the mouth and nostrils of animals. Defra said the south and east of England were especially vulnerable due to winds carrying the insects across the Channel. It urged all livestock owners to be vigilant and report any suspected cases.. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0jy1zex0j2o

The US deputy ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, speaking during a Security Council meeting on Tuesday By Francesca Gillett BBC News The US has said it still has serious concerns over a draft UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, just hours before a planned vote on Thursday. The council was due to vote on calling for "urgent humanitarian pauses" - but despite intense talks, it had not yet been able to agree on a wording. The US said it was concerned the resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, could "actually slow down" humanitarian aid into Gaza. It had "widespread concerns", it said. All week, the Security Council - whose task is to ensure global peace and security - has repeatedly postponed the draft resolution aimed at bringing in some form of ceasefire, as wrangling continued over the language. The resolution has already been modified to accommodate Washington's position - including with toned down language calling for a "suspension" rather than a "cessation" of hostilities. The key sticking point on Thursday appeared to be over the text's proposal to have a UN mechanism to monitor aid into Gaza - something the Arab group of nations insists must be part of any meaningful resolution. But the US feared that could take away Israel's control of the screening process - and it asked for another delay to allow time for discussions with Egypt on how a monitoring mechanism can work for all parties. Currently, Israel monitors all aid and fuel deliveries to Gaza. On Thursday evening, Nate Evans, a spokesperson for the US mission to the United Nations, said the aim of the resolution was to "facilitate and help expand humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza, and we cannot lose sight of that purpose". "We must ensure any resolution helps and doesn't hurt the situation on the ground," he added. Earlier this month, the majority of the Security Council - 13 of 15 members - supported a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, but the US vetoed it and the UK abstained. The US, like Israel, believes that a ceasefire would benefit Hamas - and instead supports pauses in fighting. But since then, pressure has been growing for fighting to be paused. Earlier this week, Hamas said the number of people killed in Gaza since 7 October had passed 20,000. On Thursday, the UN's World Food Programme warned that Gaza was at risk of famine if the war continued. It said more than one in four households in Gaza faced extreme hunger and the amount of aid getting in was nowhere near what was needed. The UN says almost 1.9 million people in Gaza are estimated to be displaced by the war "The levels of acute food insecurity are unprecedented in terms of seriousness, speed of deterioration and complexity. Gaza risks famine," said WFP spokesperson Shaza Moghraby. "We cannot wait for famine to be declared before we act. We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the opening of all border crossings and the resumption of commercial cargo to provide relief, put an end to the suffering and avert the very serious threat of famine." Talks had been taking place in Egypt to reach a new truce - similar to the week-long pause in fighting last month that saw hostages released - but on Thursday they suffered a setback, when Hamas said it would not agree to a partial release of hostages for a partial ceasefire. It said Palestinian groups had rejected the prospect of more hostages being released until Israel agrees to end the war. Israel has repeatedly rejected a permanent ceasefire with Hamas. More than 240 Israeli hostages were captured during the 7 October attacks, when Hamas broke through the heavily-guarded perimeter with Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people. A total of 110 hostages were released in the truce last month.. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67795439

Microsoft has provided a tool that helps solve the problem of ghost installations of the HP Smart application and the appearance of HP printer data on computers with Windows 10 and 11 where there are no linked computers from this technology firm. At the beginning of the month, some Windows users detected that the HP Smart application had been automatically installed on their computers , which configures and checks the status of this American manufacturer's printers. This application generally comes installed on HP computers and can be downloaded for free on other brands' computers through the Microsoft Store, iOS App Store, and Android Google Play. However, the installations of said 'app' were happening on computers that were not from HP nor did they have a printer of this brand installed. As detailed by Microsoft , the bug that caused it changed the printer names and icons to show information about the LaserJet M101-M106 model and installed said 'app' automatically. The cause of the failure has not been identified, but Microsoft has provided a tool to solve it, which restores the printer information and its icon and eliminates the HP Smart application if it detects that there are no hardware or drivers related to it installed on the computer... https://www.europapress.es/portaltic/software/noticia-microsoft-facilita-herramienta-solucionar-instalacion-fantasma-impresoras-hp-windows-20231220112250.html

Harley Brown died shortly after he was found with stab injuries on King's Mill Lane in Huddersfield By Emma Glasbey & PA Media BBC News Scuffles broke out in court when two teenagers were jailed for the killing of a 17-year-old boy in a "sustained and brutal" knife attack. Supporters of Harley Brown, who was murdered in Huddersfield on 20 February, clashed with those there for the two boys, who admitted the killing. The pair, now 15 and 17, were jailed for just over 10 years and 14 years respectively at Leeds Crown Court. The judge described Harley's killing as a "senseless atrocity". When the younger boy was sentenced to life with a minimum of 10 years and three months in detention, one person walked out, declaring the tariff "a joke".That precipitated groups facing off, exchanging threats and shouts in the court room. A number of people were held back by groups on both sides as police intervened to restore calm. The court had heard how the pair who were "under the influence of nitrous oxide" had chased Harley along Kings Mill Lane in Huddersfield in the early hours. The boys, who cannot be named because of their age, were 14 and 16 at the time of the murder. They had been due to stand trial after pleading not guilty, but last month they changed their pleas to guilty. The judge said both defendants "share equal responsibility" Speaking after his death, Harley's family said he would be remembered for his "loving personality, beautiful smile and cheeky sense of humour". Harley had moved to Huddersfield from Deptford, London, in 2020 for a "safe" new life after his mother became concerned he was being groomed, the court heard. Ms Brown said: "We moved to Huddersfield to start a new life. I gave up everything to make sure Harley was safe. "He tried to pick people up when they were down. He had a kind heart." Ms Brown said she felt "physically sick" living round the corner from where Harley was murdered. "Harley, my world, had been brutally murdered and I couldn't even say goodbye to him," she said. The court heard how on the day of the attack, Harley had taken a taxi to meet a female friend outside a 24-hour shop on Wakefield Road and "coincidentally" met the two defendants. Harley, who had the nickname Dripzz, looked "panicked" when he saw the pair, his friend told the police. During sentencing, judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, said there was "no evidence of the motive for what happened next". The two chased Harley to King's Mill Lane and were seen on CCTV attacking him with knives, she said. "The strikes are impossible to count. They are directed at all parts of his body as he kicked out helplessly," she added. "It was an unprovoked, sustained and merciless attack. There is no doubt the two defendants share equal responsibility." A machete-style knife discarded by the 17-year-old as he fled the scene was later found by a member of the public, the court heard. Prosecutors had said the attack was "highly suggestive of having a motive of gang-related rivalry", but the judge said no evidence of this had been found. The elder defendant was sentenced to a minimum of 14 years and six months in detention. West Yorkshire Police later confirmed no arrests had been made after the fracas at Leeds Crown Court. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leeds-67748373

The park's head keeper said the traffic cones often make a "good hat" for the bears Alex McIntyre Christmas has come early for three polar bears in Staffordshire after they were treated to a sleigh filled with their favourite toys – traffic cones. Peak Wildlife Park in Leek took delivery of 50 cones for eight-year-old Hope and her twin cubs Nanook and Noori. The trio arrived at the park from Sweden earlier this year and staff have since discovered the animals’ love for cones. The festive donation has been made by Staffordshire County Council. As the bears gleefully splashed about in the water with their new cones, the authority’s cabinet member for transport, councillor David Williams, told BBC Radio Stoke he was “shocked” when he heard of their toy of choice. He said the broken cones could no longer be used on the roads, adding he was happy they could be reused for the animals' entertainment. “I was quite amazed at how quickly they wanted to get hold of them. The fact they were playing with them in the water and loving it just makes it all worthwhile,” Mr Williams added. The 50 cones were donated by Staffordshire County Council As well as throwing them around in the water and squashing them, head keeper Yaz Walker said the cones often make a “good hat”. “The thing with polar bears is you have to keep them busy, keep them entertained, but they do destroy everything. It seems to be their main objective," she said. “The traffic cones are good because they’ve already lived out their lives as a traffic cone."Hope, Nanook and Noori arrived at the park earlier this year The polar bears were put on public view at the park in August after arriving in June. The trio had previously been cared for at the Orsa Predator Park in Sweden. Hope was born in Antibes, France, in 2014, before she was moved to Orsa, where she gave birth to her twin cubs in November 2021.. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqv1l820pxvo

Ukraine is running low on artillery shells By Abdujalil Abdurasulov and Daniel Thomas BBC News Ukraine has warned it is already being forced to downsize some military operations because of a drop-off in foreign aid. Top general Oleksandr Tarnavskyi said troops faced ammunition shortages along the "entire front line", creating a "big problem" for Kyiv. It comes as billions of dollars of US and EU aid have been held up amid political wrangles. Ukraine said it hoped to boost its own ammunition industry with western help. But it relies heavily on western supplies, particularly on deliveries of long-range missiles and air defence systems, to fight occupying Russian forces.Gen Tarnavskyi told the Reuters news agency that the country lacked artillery shells, particularly for its Soviet-era weapons. "The volumes we have are not sufficient, given our needs," he said. "So, we're redistributing it. We're re-planning tasks that we had set for ourselves and making them smaller because we need to provide for them." He said that diminishing foreign military aid was already having an impact on the battlefield, and forcing a change in tactics. "In some areas, we moved to defence, and in some we continue our offensive actions. "And we are preparing our reserves for our further large-scale actions. Their intention remains. The only thing is that their actions change, tactics change." His comments come in the wake of setbacks in both the EU and US. Republicans in the US Congress first blocked a $60bn (£47bn) military package for Ukraine earlier this month. That was followed by Hungary's blocking of the EU's €50bn ($55bn; £43bn) financial aid deal last week. EU leaders however said Ukraine would not be left without support. Ukraine was already facing an ammunition shortage as Western powers struggled to maintain supplies. The EU pledged to send one million artillery shells by March 2024, but so far only 480,000 have been either delivered or are in the pipeline. Republicans block Biden aid package to Kyiv Hungary blocks €50bn of EU funding for Ukraine Inside Putin's carefully choreographed phone-in Meanwhile, the US has provided Ukraine with more than two million 155mm shells for use in Western-made artillery systems. But its own stocks have been depleted, prompting the decision last summer to send cluster munitions. Ukraine is already using ammunition faster than partners can produce it. A report by the Estonian defence ministry said Kyiv needed a minimum of 200,000 artillery shells a month to retain an edge against Russia. "Sustaining this rate will empty European and US stockpiles over 2024 and will require significant foreign purchases of ammunition," it said. Speaking to the BBC, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister Ivan Havryliuk said the country was ramping up production of kamikaze drones "to compensate [for] the lack of artillery shells". Additionally, it was increasing its own production of artillery rounds "for almost the entire range" of its Soviet-era weapons.A Ukrainian gunner on the front line in Donbas He also said the country hoped to boost its defence industry by jointly producing ammunition with Western companies on Ukrainian soil. Gen Havryliuk said this was the focus of negotiations with US companies when he accompanied President Volodymyr Zelensky during his December visit to the US. Ukraine signed a number of agreements with US firms to start joint production. He said that Ukraine could not match the resources of or manpower of Russia and the goal was to achieve technological superiority. Gen Havryliuk said Kyiv was confident its international partners would overcome political differences to provide Ukraine with aid as before. EU countries, he added, sent their assistance not only as a bloc but also on a bilateral level. However, the situation has signalled to Russia that international support for Ukraine is weakening - and there are concerns that by switching its economy onto a war footing, Moscow can outlast the West in this battle of attrition. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his belief that the war would end only when Russia achieves its goals. Kalle Kirss, Estonia's defence adviser to Nato, told the BBC that Europe needed to commit funding to support Ukraine. "We need to signal very clearly to Russia that we're ready for a long war and that we will boost our industry and we [will] commit our resources.".. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67748813

It is an open secret that Apple is going to take a leap in image quality in several of its devices. On the one hand, we have the first OLED iPad, which is expected to arrive in 2024. And we also know that the company with the bitten apple plans to launch a microLED Apple Watch in 2026.Although later we will talk in detail about the benefits of this image technology that we have begun to see in some televisions of thee ultra premium range , there are more details revealed. All thanks to the colleagues at MacRumors, who have echoed a report from TrendForce, where they point to the launch of a Apple Watch Ultra microLED in 2026. What we know about the Apple Watch Ultra microLED In addition, there will be other notable changes. For starters, the Apple Watch Ultra has a 1.93-inch screen size, while the upcoming microLED model will feature a 2.12-inch screen. We are talking about a fairly notable increase in size, although it will also affect its price. Yes, the first Apple Watch with a microLED screen will have a significantly higher cost. According to the TrendForce report, the manufacturing price of the panel will be $120, which makes it clear that it won't exactly be cheap. Although it makes sense, seeing the advantages that this technology offers. To start, microLED displays can offer greater energy efficiency compared to OLEDs, as they allow pixels to be turned on and off individually. In addition, microLED displays tend to be brighter than OLED displays, which could improve screen readability in direct sunlight. So it will be an ideal companion for the Apple Watch. Not to mention the improvement in color reproduction accuracy and a higher contrast ratio compared to OLEDs, which would result in an improved viewing experien ce. And, no less important, this type of technology stands out for its great resistance compared to an OLED, so there will be no problem of pixel burning on an Apple Watch microLED. Finally, the pixelsxels are smaller on a microLED display, so there will be a better screen resolution in a small space , giving a new leap in quality to the Apple Watch. It is even possible to reduce its price, since it is a lighter and more flexible material. At the moment it is nothing more than a rumor, and we will have to wait for the firm to officially announce its arrival, but for now it is clear that this Apple Watch microLED will have a lot what to offer. https://cincodias.elpais.com/cincodias/2023/12/15/gadgets/1702656130_956048.html

Samsung has presented Unnoise, a new application for its Pixel Buds2 Pro wireless headphones which allows users to control and adjust the volume of external noise according to their preferences, in order to protect hearing against levels of annoying external sounds. The Korean technology company continues to implement new features within its 'Technology with Purpose' program, in this case, with The intention is to protect users from external noise situations to which they may be exposed on a daily basis. In this framework, Samsung has presented the new Unnoise application, with which users will be able to configure their GalaxyBuds2 Pro headphones personalize the sound pressure level. in order to to control and adjust external noise, As the company has detailed in a statement on its website, this application is also aimed at people who "suffer some degree of auditory hypersensitivity" and, therefore, have problems when listening to uncomfortable sounds such as, for example, the noise of construction or the sirens of an ambulance. The Galaxy Buds2 Pro headphones were launched in August 2022, standing out for their sound technology HiFi and its active noise cancellation. Taking this into account, through Unnoise, users can configure a series of settings for the Galaxy Buds2 Pro with two modalities focused on the well-being of people with hearing hypersensitivity problems or hyperacusis. On the one hand, it includes the Exterior sound mode, which is based on establishing a limit of maximum decibels. In this way, when the 'app' detects that external noises are exceeding the established range for several seconds, they will be automatically attenuated to "enjoy any situation without disturbance." Once these sound levels decrease below the configured level, cancellation will be disabled. Following this line, the application also has Conversation Mode. With this option, the headphones attenuate outside sounds, while preventing users from missing conversations around them. To do this, when this mode is enabled, the noise cancellation of the headphones is automatically activated; however, if the application detects any conversation close to the user, it deactivates the external sound cancellation and activates the ambient sound. Thus, you can converse normally while protecting your ears from extreme noises. In the same way, once the application stops detecting the conversation, it will activate external sound cancellation again. Also, with the Unnoise features, the headphones also act as a sound shield to help "prevent hearing problems." As noted by the CMO & Head of Direct to Consumer at Samsung Electronics Iberia, Alfonso Fernández, this new application is the evolution of Unfear, the work done for the group with hyperacusis. Now, these functions are close to 21 percent of the general po[CENSORED]tion who, as noted, suffer from hypersensitivity . This protects users personally, adapting to each specific case. For his part, the member of the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (SEORL), Faustino Nuñez, has stressed the importance of controlling the decibel volume. "Every time a person is exposed to sounds above 85 decibels for more than 60 minutes, injury occurs to the inner ear. It is a cumulative and incurable injury that produces hidden hearing loss, through which the person little by little loses the ability to understand words," he said. sentenced. Unnoise is now available in beta for Android devices. It is compatible for 'smartphones' with versions of Android 10 and higher and requires pairing with the Galaxy Buds2 Pro headphones to enjoy its functionalities... https://www.europapress.es/portaltic/software/noticia-samsung-permite-configurar-ruido-externo-unnoise-nueva-app-galaxy-buds2-pro-20231213171857.html

AMD has responded to NVIDIA's H100 TensorRT-LLM figures with the MI300X once again leading in the AI benchmarks when running optimized software. AMD & NVIDIA Are Engaged In A Fierce Battle With Both GPU Makers Claiming AI Superiority Over Each Other Using Optimized Software Stacks For H100 & MI300X Chips Two days ago, NVIDIA published new benchmarks of its Hopper H100 GPUs to showcase that their chips perform much better than what was showcased by AMD during its "Advancing AI" event. The red team compared its brand new Instinct MI300X GPU against the Hopper H100 chip which is over a year old now but remains the most po[CENSORED]r choice in the AI industry. The benchmarks used by AMD were not using the optimized libraries such as TensorRT-LLM which provides a big boost to NVIDIA's AI chips.via AMD Surely, these back-and-forth numbers are something that are kind of unexpected but given just how important AI has become for the likes of AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel, we can expect to see more such examples being shared in the future. Even Intel has recently stated that the whole industry is motivated to end NVIDIA's CUDA dominance in the industry. The fact as of right now is that NVIDIA has years of software expertise in the AI segment and while Instinct MI300X offers some beastly specs, it will soon be competing with an even faster Hopper solution in the form of H200 and the upcoming Blackwell B100 GPUs in 2024.TSMC is leading the AI race by producing next-gen AI chips for NVIDIA and AMD. (Image Source: Wccftech) Intel is also ready to out its Gaudi 3 accelerators in 2024 which would further heat the AI space but in a way, this competition would make for a vibrant and more lively AI industry where each vendor continues to innovate and excel over the other, offering customers better capabilities and even faster performance. NVIDIA, despite having no competition for years, has continued to innovate in this segment, and with AMD and Intel ramping up their AI production and software, we can expect them to respond with even better hardware/software of their own... https://wccftech.com/amd-responds-to-nvidia-h100-tensorrt-llm-results-shows-mi300x-gpu-leading-optimized-ai-software/

Duncan was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) 18 years ago By Anna Collinson & Claire Kendall BBC News The shortage of carers working in people's homes has more than doubled in the past decade, yet in recent announcements the government has made no mention of tackling the problem. The BBC has spent six months with a man and his family to see how the system is failing them. Duncan Taylor's flat is his world. His days are dictated by a routine of regular medication, washing and eating. Much of his time is spent in dark rooms because he can't bear bright light. It's a far cry from the life he had as a young man who loved to travel and see live music. He had just found his dream job in finance when, at 30 years old, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). It's a debilitating autoimmune condition that has a wide range of symptoms and effects, and though some are treatable, there is no cure. Duncan has been robbed of his mobility, sense of taste and smell and much of his sight. "My memory's very bad, I can't even remember this morning. One of the gifts that MS gave me," he jokes sadly. Duncan, now 48, is entitled to specialist care 24/7, funded by the NHS and worth about £5,000 a week. But this regularly doesn't happen because there are not enough workers with the skills to support his complex needs. Instead his untrained and unpaid parents, who are both in their 70s, have to cover some of his personal nursing care.Duncan's mother Sylvia said her son needs consistent carers "He must have had two to three hundred carers through his home," his mother Sylvia, 74, says, adding: "Many of them have come just because there was nobody else. "How does he feel about people seeing him lying naked when he hasn't even spoken to them face to face?" Duncan, from Darlington, was on his seventh care company in five years when we first started following his story in the spring of 2023. Sylvia has documented it all, from handwritten diaries to old rotas riddled with gaps and last minute changes.Sylvia has documented Duncan's experiences She also filmed videos on her phone of her son crying out in pain as he was moved incorrectly by his carers. "I asked one carer where did she do her training for moving and handling and her reply was that she had done it online which just seemed ridiculous," she says. "Why are care companies allowed to take these complex care packages when they can't staff and train them properly?" According to Skills For Care, there were about 23,500 home care vacancies in 2012-13 and 71,000 in 2022-23. The government says it has made money available to local authorities to help improve the care workforce. The relentlessness of the situation has had a devastating impact on Duncan's mental health. "I used to have a lady and she was great because she knew exactly what to do and she would make me laugh as well," he says. "I will take the extra pain now because I don't have a choice. Unfortunately, I have a horrible feeling of just giving in."Sylvia is concerned about who will care for her son when she no longer can Weeks after that conversation, Duncan was rushed into hospital with a potentially dangerous chest infection. The doctors said they were also concerned about three pressure sores which hadn't been treated properly for more than a year. Constant sitting and being moved with a hoist had badly damaged his skin, with one sore becoming a large deep wound. "My worst fear is they get infected, it could really be fatal," Sylvia says. As the months passed, the sores worsened. Sylvia desperately sought advice from a private plastic surgeon who described the worst wound as a "deep cavity" down to the bone.Duncan loves meeting up with his brother and nephews It was a thank you to the mum who has never given up, but who has also been haunted by what will happen to her son when his parents are no longer there. "I will fight till my last breath to do anything for him to make his life better," she says, "but there's only so much that we can do." "The whole process is exhausting. I'm speaking not just for Duncan, but for people who can't do it themselves. To bring to attention what's going on." Duncan is now being cared for by company number eight, but still with regular help from his parents. He is getting intensive treatment for his sores, which are beginning to heal for the first time in over a year. The Department of Health and Social Care said it had provided £8.1bn to local authorities to tackle care pressures, with £570m of that to improve adult social care by "boosting the workforce". A spokesman said the government had "seen signs of improvement" with a 2% decrease in the number of vacancies between the year ending March 2023 and the previous 12 months... https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tees-67658432

The male and female were rescued from culling in Scotland Published 9 hours ago Two orphaned beavers have been given a new home in a rewilding enclosure in Devon. The male and female, who were rescued from culling in Scotland, have been settling in at Poole Farm, Plymouth, for four weeks and have already begun to transform the landscape. This is the second time that beavers have been introduced to Poole Farm, after a previous pair escaped due to storm damage and one was killed by a car. Plymouth City Council said it had since reinforced the enclosure to prevent further i ncidents. The project will monitor the beavers' impact on the Bircham Valley The beavers are part of the Green Minds project, a council initiative that aims to create urban wild spaces and connect people with nature. The animals spent a few months at the Cornwall Seal Sanctuary before being released. Roisin Campbell-Palmer, head of restoration at the Beaver Trust, said: "We are excited to support this urban beaver project, which offers an opportunity to showcase how beavers can work alongside people in a city setting." The beavers are among the few wild po[CENSORED]tions of the species in the UK, after they were hunted to extinction in the 16th Century. The beavers are part of the Green Minds project, a Plymouth City Council initiative The released beavers’ behaviour and changes they make to the landscape will be monitored to show how their actions can reduce flooding further downstream and create habitats for wildlife in the Bircham Valley. Matt Holden, Devon beaver project lead at the Devon Wildlife Trust, said: "This is an exciting development for Plymouth and we look forward to observing the increase in wildlife that the presence of beavers should bring across the site.".. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c51z36376z5o

Russia's strike caused considerable damage, which Kyiv blamed on debris from 10 ballistic missiles it had shot down By Jessica Parker & George Wright BBC News in Kyiv and London Dozens of people have been injured in a wave of missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, authorities say. Fifty-three people were hurt in the attacks, including six children, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Kindergarten and hospital buildings were reportedly damaged by debris as authorities said 10 Russian ballistic missiles had been shot down. The strikes happened after President Volodymyr Zelensky left the US. His plea for Congress to agree more military aid for Ukraine made little progress in winning over reluctant Republicans. EU leaders will also discuss further aid for Ukraine on Thursday, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said "we must give Ukraine what it needs to be strong today". On Wednesday, the EU said it would unblock €10bn in funding for Hungary, in a move criticised as an attempt to persuade Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to loosen his objections to helping Ukraine. Mr Zelensky promised a response to Wednesday's overnight attack. "Russia has proven once again that it is a heinous country that fires missiles at night, trying to hit residential areas, kindergartens, and energy facilities during the winter," he posted on X. Aid stalemate leaves Zelensky with little to show from US trip Wednesday's attack on Kyiv began at around 03:00 (01:00 GMT) - the third Russian missile strike on the capital in the past week. Although Kyiv has been targeted by Russian drones in recent weeks, cruise missiles were launched on the city for the first time in 79 days on Friday, while ballistic missiles were used on Monday and in the latest attack. Ukraine's air force said it had shot down all 10 targets flying towards the city, using anti-aircraft missiles.Kindergarten and hospital buildings were reportedly damaged while fires broke out in the capital The windows of residential apartment blocks were blown out and parked cars were destroyed due to falling debris. Loud explosions were heard in Kyiv before air raid sirens sounded, because ballistic missiles fly at such a speed that it is hard to detect them in time. "Ballistics [are] used precisely so that people have no chance to hide in bomb shelters," Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, wrote on X. Ukraine's Armed Forces General Staff identified the projectiles as Iskander-M ballistic missiles, as well as S-400s: extremely fast missiles intended for air defence, but which have also been used to hit ground targets. One man, Oleksander, told the BBC that the windows in his apartment were blown out in the middle of the night. He started crying as he recalled seeing his neighbours and their children being taken away by ambulance.Oleksander saw his neighbours being taken away by an ambulance Meanwhile, Ukraine's biggest mobile network operator says it hopes to restore operations on Wednesday after what appeared to be the largest cyberattack since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Tuesday's attack on Kyivstar, which has more than half of Ukraine's po[CENSORED]tion as mobile subscribers, has put millions of people in danger of not receiving air raid alerts. A Russian hacking group, which targeted internet providers and Ukrainian websites earlier this year, said it was behind the latest cyberattack. Queues formed during the day at a shopping centre in Kyiv as people tried to switch mobile phone networks. Lidia told the BBC that her entire family used Kyivstar and her grandson needed internet access to join school lessons online.Lidia joined a queue for an alternative Ukrainian network because of the attack on Kiyvstar The port city of Odesa was also attacked for "several hours" by drones overnight, a regional military chief said. Two men were reportedly injured and there was damage to civil infrastructure. The Ukrainian president arrived in Norway on Wednesday for a previously unannounced visit to discuss support for his country's defences. He flew there after a trip to the US, where he made a last-ditch effort to win new military aid from Congress before the currently approved amount runs dry. But hopes that Mr Zelensky could use his powers of persuasion to unlock military aid in Washington DC appear to have fallen flat. US President Joe Biden warned Republicans that they would give Russia a "Christmas gift" if they failed to provide additional military aid to Ukraine. Mr Zelensky said afterwards that he and Mr Biden had "just agreed to work on increasing the number of air defence systems in Ukraine, and the terrorist state demonstrated how critical this decision is". "Each additional system and missile is vital for Ukraine, our cities, and our people. They are saving lives," he added. Mr Zelensky's push for aid came ahead of a summit of European leaders where Ukraine hopes to be given a start date for talks on joining the EU.Hungarian PM Viktor Orban reaffirmed his position that the EU should not open accession talks. "The EU is preparing to make a terrible mistake and we must prevent that even if 26 (members) want to make the mistake," Mr Orban told local website Mandiner. "If we want to give support to Ukraine, a geostrategic signal, then we should, but this is not membership." Hungary has repeatedly been at odds with its EU partners over Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It has watered down sanctions against Russia and last December vetoed a deal to grant Ukraine €18bn (£15.5bn) in 2023. The EU has authorised about €10.2bn in funding for Hungary ahead of the meeting, saying Budapest had taken measures on the independence of its judiciary. However, it said additional funding would remain blocked without progress on the rule of law. "Ukraine is not only fighting against the invader, but for Europe, and joining our family will be Ukraine's ultimate victory. And for this, we have a decisive role to play," EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament. However, Mr Orban told the Hungarian parliament on Wednesday that the idea of Ukraine joining the EU was in stark contrast to Hungary's national interest.. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67701246

Smartwatches and smartbands have become an essential gadget for millions of users . Whether because you want to monitor any physical activity, better control your health or simply receive notifications comfortably, this type of wearables are an increasingly practical option. In addition, and as it could not be otherwise, the vast majority of products available on the market, whether smart watches or activity bracelets, all of these models have water resistance. With this, if the wearable gets splashed, you put it in the pool or you don't take it off while you shower, you won't have any problem. But be careful if you want to use it in a sauna, or a whirlpool bath. The joke can cost you dearly. Saunas are the worst enemy of any device Using a smartwatch or smartband in a sauna is not recommended for several reasons. For starters, most electronic devices, including smartwatches and smartbands, are designed to operate within a specific range of temperatures. Saunas can reach very high temperatures that exceed this range, which can damage the internal components of the device. So, unless your smartwatch has military-grade resistance, we already have a very serious problem for your wearable. In addition, we have another problem: humidity. Although many saunas are dry, some saunas, such as steam saunas, produce high humidity. Moisture can infiltrate the device, even if it is waterproof, and cause damage. And there is another very important detail: resistance to water is not the same as resistance to steam. Although many smartwatches and fitness trackers are water resistant, this does not mean they are designed to withstand hot water vapor. Steam can enter small openings that liquid water cannot, potentially damaging the device. Not to mention the damage to materials that extreme heat can cause. Doesn't that seem enough to you? Well, you should know that using your smart watch or smartband in a sauna can damage the battery of your wearable. As you well know, lithium batteries are currently used. And this component is greatly affected by excessive heat, which can result in a loss of battery life, or even swelling or explosion. So, it is clear that even if your watch or smartband is waterproof, it is better not to use it in a sauna because it could become an expensive paperweight... https://cincodias.elpais.com/cincodias/2023/10/02/gadgets/1696243472_336982.html
