Ascendant Studios pulled off an impressive reveal for its debut title, the first-person magic shooter Immortals of Aveum, due to be published by Electronic Arts under the EA Originals label. Today, the independent triple-A studio released nearly seven minutes of new gameplay, again showcasing the game's excellent graphics. At the same time, they also published a new blog post to detail the technology used during development. Immortals of Aveum is powered by Unreal Engine 5.1 and makes extensive use of the signature features: Lumen and Nanite. Alleged clock frequencies of AMD's Hybrid Phoenix APU have been charted out which show vastly different speeds for performance & efficiency cores. Hybrid AMD Phoenix APU Engineering Sample Allegedly Features Up To 5 GHz Performance & 4 GHz Efficiency Core Clocks Just a few hours ago, we reported how AMD has officially listed the hybrid core design of its brand new Phoenix 2 APUs as similar to Intel's hybrid naming scheme. While we know that the Phoenix 2 APU lineup will come with a hybrid design that will make use of the Zen 4 core architecture, some new (and alleged) data has been shared by Twitter user, @xinoassassin1, which is said to be a clock frequency chart for a hybrid Phoenix ES APU. There is no information available on what the SKU is but it is stated that this specific chip features a single CCX with a 6-core layout in a 2+4 configuration. There are 2 performance cores & 4 efficiency cores which are based on the Zen 4 core architecture. The difference between AMD's and Intel's approach is that while Intel uses two very different architectures (Golden/Raptor Cove +Gracemont) the AMD Performance & Efficiency cores will utilize the same Zen 4 core architecture. The P-cores will be the standard designs you get on existing Ryzen 7000 chips but the tuned Zen 4 core will be getting reduced cache and clocks while focusing on pure performance efficiency. The clock frequency was plotted while the hybrid AMD Phoenix ES APU was running a Cinebench R23 multi-bench test. Given the plot chart, we can see a huge disparity in the clock speeds of the different cores. The Core 0 and Core 5 are the P-Cores and these can be seen running anywhere between 4.0 - 5.0 GHz. The P-Cores do average out around 4.2 - 4.3 GHz. As for the E-Cores, these clocks are much lower around 2.5 - 4.0 GHz. The cores mostly average slightly below 3.0 GHz & a short burst can be seen pushing them up to 4.0 GHz. As for power draw, the AMD Phoenix APU with hybrid core consumed around 15-20W power. The Performance Zen 4 cores were sipping between 7-8W of power while the Efficiency cores sipped 5 Watts of power. When it comes to single-core performance, it is stated that the CPU automatically uses the Performance cores so the results won't differ much from the standard Phoenix chips. Elden Ring was the most critically acclaimed game released in 2022, garnering countless awards that spanned various categories, including some related to the technical aspect of the game. Even so, I'd be hard-pressed to consider Elden Ring some sort of a technical masterpiece. While its art is top-notch, the game doesn't include any cutting-edge technologies, and its default look is far from the most impressive game we've ever seen. On PC, there are texture mods and other user-made graphics enhancements and tweaks, but they can only go so far. That's why I had been eagerly anticipating the ray tracing update. Bandai Namco first announced that Elden Ring would be updated with ray tracing support months before launch. Then, there were no more official news on the matter (although dataminers had spotted the addition of related strings that hinted at an imminent release) until ray tracing was at last added to Elden Ring with this week's 1.09 patch. So, did FromSoftware manage to elevate the game's visuals to new heights? Yes and no. It's not a game-changing difference, which is hardly surprising since FromSoftware only elected to implement ray traced shadows and ambient occlusion. While it is understandable that the developers wouldn't want to go into adding ray traced global illumination since it would have required re-authoring the game's entire lighting, they could have at least added ray traced reflections, too. For that, we have the precedent of additions to an existing game and a live service one at that (Grand Theft Auto V on current-generation consoles). Going back to Elden Ring, the impact of ray tracing (set to max on PC) varies between scenes, which is why I've captured several, both indoors and outdoors, near the beginning of the game. Generally, the ray tracing implementation improves the accuracy of shadows, making objects like rocks or foliage look more grounded and realistic. It can be noticeable, though it is hardly a night-and-day difference. Aesthetically, it tends to make the visuals darker than the non-ray traced option. Speaking of performance, outdoor scenes are a lot more taxing. In this small cave, for example, max ray tracing costs 29 FPS (on the GeForce RTX 4090, the mightiest graphics card available, at 4K resolution), a 24% decrease compared to ray tracing set to off. As soon as we step out of the cave, the performance cost is much larger. Max ray tracing runs at 53 FPS, while ray tracing off is up to 99 FPS. The FPS is nearly halved here, though the visual improvement with the foliage is quite visible. Also, note the greatly improved shadowing on the player character's cloak. Here, we're once again in that cave near the start of Elden Ring. It's so dark the differences are harder to spot, but look at the barrels and you'll see more accurate shadows with ray tracing. The performance cost is nearly non-existent, dropping from 120 to 107 FPS. That's a rare instance, however. Going onto a large open field once again produces a significant performance penalty. AMD positions the chip against the Core i9-13900 and Ccore i9-12900 CPUs. Next up, we have the Ryzen 7 7700 which features 8 cores, 16 threads 40 MB of cache (32 MB L3 + 8 MB L3), and features a maximum clock speed of up to 5.3 GHz.
