  2. Sixteen-year-old Maya Weug wins coveted place on Ferrari programme and an F4 seat for 2021 after becoming the inaugural winner of the FIA's Girls on Track - Rising Stars programme Maya Weug joins a Ferrari driver academy which has already delivered a number of youngsters to the F1 grid Ferrari have announced Dutch teenager Maya Weug as the first female inductee into their driver academy. Weug, 16, earned the coveted position after being crowned the winner of the FIA's inaugural Girls on Track - Rising Stars programme, run in conjunction with the Ferrari driver academy and the governing body's Women in Motorsport commission. Beating the three other finalists in the competition after an evaluation day at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters last week, Weug will now also be given a seat in one of the FIA's Formula 4 championships this year. "This is a key moment in the history of Scuderia Ferrari and its Academy, the FDA, set up in 2019 to shape the drivers of the future for our Formula 1 team," said Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto. "Now, thanks to the partnership with the FIA in the "Girls on Track-Rising Stars" programme, for the first time, a female driver will join the Ferrari Driver Academy. She is Maya Weug and over the course of this year, she will progress along with us and also take part in one of the F4 Championships Certified by FIA, the category seen as the first step in single-seaters on the road to Formula 1. "Maya's arrival is a clear indication of the Scuderia's commitment to making motorsport increasingly inclusive, in line with the hashtag supported by the entire Formula 1 community, #weraceasone." A delighted Weung, who was born in Spain to a Belgian mother and Dutch father, said: "It's been my dream for so long, since I've started karting. Being with Ferrari is amazing. Now being here and winning is unreal. "It has been an amazing experience." Marco Matassa, the head of Ferrari's driver academy, added: "Despite very limited experience in a single-seater, she had a good turn of speed and demonstrated a mastery of the car that meant she could immediately implement the instructions she was given. This attitude, along with the results she produced both on and off the track, as well as her open and determined personality, led us to conclude that Maya is ready to start her adventure with us at the FDA." The three other finalists - 17-year-old Doriane Pin from France and Brazilian youngsters Antonella Bassani, 14, and Julia Ayoub, 15 - will each have the opportunity to test a 488 Challenge Evo sportscar after also impressing the scheme's judges. With F1 and the FIA determined to widen opportunities in motorsport for all, Weug joins a Ferrari academy which has produced a number of talented drivers in recent years. Four members of the 2020 field - Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Mick Schumacher and Ferrari's own Charles Leclerc - have progressed to F1 seats from the programme. The late Jules Bianchi was also a graduate of the scheme. The last woman to race in F1 was Italy's Lella Lombardi in 1976, one of only two females to start a Grand Prix. The all-female W Series, meanwhile, will feature on the support bill at eight F1 race weekends this year.

  4. WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it will recall 3 million vehicles for Takata airbag inflators that could rupture at a cost of $610 million. NHTSA on Tuesday ordered Ford to issue the recall for driver-side airbag inflators, rejecting the automaker's 2017 petition to avoid it. The defect, which in rare instances leads to airbag inflators rupturing and sending potentially deadly metal fragments flying, prompted the largest automotive recall in U.S. history of more than 67 million inflators. Worldwide, about 100 million inflators installed by 19 major automakers have been recalled. The recall includes 2.7 million U.S. vehicles and about 300,000 in Canada and other locations. Ford will include the cost in fourth-quarter results, it said in a regulatory filing. The vehicles were previously recalled for passenger-side inflators. "We believe our extensive data demonstrated that a safety recall was not warranted for the driver-side airbag. However, we respect NHTSA’s decision and will issue a recall," Ford said. NHTSA also required Mazda Motor Corp. to recall 5,800 airbag inflators in 2007–2009 B-Series vehicles. Takata inflators have resulted in at least 400 injuries and 27 deaths worldwide -- including 18 U.S. fatalities with two in previously recalled 2006 Ford Ranger trucks. The Ford vehicles being recalled include various 2006-2012 model-year Ranger, Fusion, Edge, Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKX vehicles. In November, NHTSA rejected a petition filed by General Motors to avoid recalling 5.9 million U.S. vehicles with Takata airbags. GM said the callback covered 7 million vehicles worldwide and would cost $1.2 billion. Ford separately disclosed Thursday it expects to record a pretax remeasurement loss of $1.5 billion in the fourth quarter related to pension and other post-employment benefits plans, driven by lower discount rates. Ford said the remeasurement loss is expected to reduce net income by about $1.2 billion, but did not change expectations for 2021 pension contributions. Ford shares fell nearly 1 percent to $11.42 in after-hours trading on Wall Street.

  5. A former employee of the Mercedes factory in Vitoria, in northern Spain, out of spite towards the company destroyed about 50 new vans with an excavator, police sources said Tuesday. The 38-year-old man first stole the excavator from another company, 21 km from the Mercedes factory. Once there, he destroyed the entrance door, and then "attacked with the vehicle fifty vans parked in the parking lot" of the German manufacturer, the Basque regional police, the Ertzaintza, indicated. The events occurred at dawn on December 31. Iñaki Andrés Lozares, union representative at the Mercedes factory, made a balance of 69 damaged vehicles in total. The management did not want to comment on the events at the moment. In the photos published in the local press, you could see one van overturned on top of another, and some more completely dented or with the hood smashed. The man, according to police, was a former Mercedes employee. His contract had ended at the end of 2017, according to Iñaki Andrés Lozares. He apparently felt "frustration, not only towards management but towards employees," too, and even "tried to enter the assembly facilities" of the factory, explained the union representative, one of the 5,000 employees at the plant. The damage caused would amount to between two and five million euros, according to sources from the German company cited by the local press.

  7. Santo Domingo, RD The Minister of the Presidency, Lisandro Macarrulla, led the act in which the Dominican Government received from the government of the People's Republic of China, a donation of eight off-road commando vehicles for military use and 140 motorcycles, with around 15,000 spare parts. and accessories for future maintenance. Macarrulla expressed that it is a special day in which ties of friendship with the Chinese people are strengthened, for which he thanked the contribution to the Dominican people. "The generosity of the Chinese Government has a direct impact on the strengthening of citizen security, an issue of great concern and of great interest to the Dominican Government," said the official. These vehicles will be used for the defense of national sovereignty and will be distributed among the three institutions that make up the Armed Forces: the Army, Navy and Air Force of the Dominican Republic, as well as the National Police. A written statement expresses that the significant contribution of this flotilla will provide the Armed Forces with greater operability in the execution of their missions and the ground mobility of their troops. The units were delivered by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China in the Dominican Republic, Zhang Run, to the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa. The Chinese ambassador said at the event that “the establishment of diplomatic relations more than two years ago opened a new chapter in bilateral relations. From that moment on, the exchange and cooperation between both parties in various fields, including defense and the police, have flourished ”. The Chinese diplomat recalled that, in April last year, Major General Huang Xueping, deputy director general of the Office of International Military Cooperation (IMCO) of the Central Military Commission of China, paid a visit to the Dominican Republic, in which it was agreed provide cooperation to the Armed Forces and the Dominican National Police. Ambassador Zhang Run expressed his high respect to the Armed Forces and the Dominican National Police, whom he praised for his work in the first line of defense against COVID-19 through great sacrifices and contributions. He trusted that these vehicles donated by the Chinese government will help the military and police to play their role as guarantors of the country's security and stability. The Ambassador reiterated the willingness of the government he represents to continue working with the Dominican side under a long-term perspective and thus take advantage of every minute to further deepen cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and reciprocal benefit to bring the relationships to a new height.

  8. So far the players Robinson Canó, Junior Lake, José Rafael Díaz, Fernando Abad, Jhan Maríñez, Jorge Mateo and Carlos Paulino are the reinforcements of the Aguilas Cibaeñas to participate in the Caribbean Series, scheduled to take place from January 31 to 6 February, in Mazatlán, Mexico. The announcement was made by Angel Ovalles, general manager of the new monarchs, who said that he had already spoken with this group of players, who showed the best disposition to represent the national colors in the important Caribbean event. However, their participations would be subject to the results of the Covid 19 tests that began yesterday to all the players, mainly to the members of the champion team. In that sense, Ovalles told Listín Diario that this is the plan to bring this bulk of players, but in the end it will be the results of the Covid 19 exams that will determine which of them will make up the Dominican squad. "This situation is a bit complicated, that is the group that we want to join us, but we must wait for the results of the tests that will be carried out and this will determine how we will count," Ovalles told the newspaper. He added that this Friday the players will be subjected to new tests, as well as Monday and Wednesday of next week. Cano test on Friday In Canó's case, he could not undergo the Covid 19 tests yesterday, but he is expected to do so on Friday when the next appointment is. Even Ovalles already spoke with the star and showed his great willingness to attend. 16. Ghost. It’s an appropriate name for the model that sits neither fully in the present nor in the future, at least so far as Rolls-Royce’s product planners are concerned. On one hand, the arrival of this substantial limousine completes an overhaul for the line-up at Goodwood, which began with an all-new Phantom in 2017, before the arrival in 2018 of the Cullinan crossover (which, inevitably, set new sales records for the company). Now, in the Ghost, we have the Phantom’s not so junior, £250,000 understudy. The circle is complete, so to speak, and more fundamentally so than you might think. The new Ghost sits for the first time on the same bespoke aluminium ‘Architecture of Luxury’ that underpins its siblings, rather than an adapted BMW 7 Series platform, as was the case when its predecessor was introduced in 2009. Unlike the Phantom and Cullinan, though, the Mk2 Ghost also points to the future of Rolls-Royce, if not in purely mechanical terms (the company is expected to introduce electric-only vehicles in the foreseeable future, whereas today’s test subject uses an unapologetic 6.75-litre V12 with not one iota of electrical assistance) then in terms of philosophy. Without a hint of irony, Rolls-Royce calls this new approach ‘Post Opulence’. What that means is something less ostentatious and more noble, the ‘antithesis of premium mediocracy’, albeit all within the traditional Rolls remit. Call it the acceptable face of extravagance. What we’ll now discover is whether Rolls-Royce has done enough to see off stiff competition, which includes Bentley and Maybach. Because whatever language you use to characterise your product, being the one who sets the standard is ultimately what really matters in the ultra-luxury class. The Ghost range at a glance Equipment grades and trim walk-ups aren’t concepts that Rolls-Royce acknowledges. Its ‘patrons’ expect their cars to be one of a kind; a motorised symbol of their tastes, values and accomplishments that won’t be seen anywhere else in the world. As such, the level of personalisation that its Bespoke Collective offers is effectively limited only by your imagination, and the depths of your bank account. Make no mistake: it’d be exceedingly easy to drop a six-figure sum customising a Ghost to your liking. 17. As Kamala Harris celebrated Inauguration Day with her step-children and husband Doug Emhoff, the latter’s ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff was also present on the occasion to support the family. Kerstin, CEO of production company Prettybird, divorced from Doug in 2008. She had earlier shared a photo of herself with her children Cole and Ella, whom she shares with Doug, after reaching the nation’s capital for the event. She continued to show her support by sharing pictures from Inauguration Day. In one of them, she is seen standing at the steps of the Capitol. “This is real. So excited behind the mask!” she captioned the post. She also shared a photo of her daughter in the much-talked-about Miu Miu coat and wrote, “Ella made quite a splash today!” In a 2019 Elle article, Harris had opened up about the kind of relationship she shares with Kerstin. “To know Cole and Ella is to know that their mother Kerstin is an incredible mother. Kerstin and I hit it off ourselves and are dear friends. She and I became a duo of cheerleaders in the bleachers at Ella’s swim meets and basketball games, often to Ella’s embarrassment. We sometimes joke that our modern family is almost a little too functional.” Netizens were quick to notice Kerstin’s supportive display and expressed their admiration for the “blended” family. Take a look at some of the reactions:

  18. The Gunners are closing in on a deal for the 22-year-old Norway international, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu Arsenal are hopeful of signing Martin Odegaard on loan in the coming days. Talks are ongoing with Real Madrid over a deal for the attacking midfielder and Goal can confirm that the north London club are growing in their belief that they are on course to land their man until the end of the season. It had looked like the Norway international would be returning for another loan spell with Real Sociedad, following on from the successful year he spent in San Sebastian during the 2019-20 campaign. But Arsenal have now moved to the front of the queue for Odegaard, who requested permission to leave Real Madrid this month in order to get more regular game time. The 22-year-old, who can operate as a No.10 or on the right wing, has made just nine appearances for the Spanish champions this season and only three starts in La Liga - two of which came in the opening week of the campaign. Arsenal have been in the market for a new attacking midfielder this month to help take the burden off Emile Smith Rowe. The 20-year-old has been exceptional in recent weeks, but Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff are aware that the youngster - who has had injury problems during the past two years - needs help. Arsenal’s priority this month has always been on reducing the number of players in his squad, with Mesut Ozil, Sean Kolasinac, William Saliba and Sokratis all being allowed to leave. But Arteta confirmed on Thursday that the focus now has shifted too bringing players in. "We are in that process right now," said the Gunners boss. "We've done the first part (trimming the squad), more or less, and now we are focusing on the second phase. "Obviously this market and the context makes it really difficult but we are looking at options and we will see what we can do." When asked about a move to Odegaard, Arteta added: "I cannot comment about players that play for other clubs. "We are looking at various positions because the movements that we've made in this transfer window with some players leaving the club leaves us a little bit short in certain areas. "If we can then we will do it, if we can't then we will just keep going with what we have." Sources at Arsenal say there is still work to be done before full agreement is reached over Odegaard, with reports in Spain suggesting there will be no purchase agreement included in the deal. Discussions are ongoing between Arsenal and Madrid, but the Gunners are hopeful that the young attacker will soon be part of Arteta’s squad.

  19. Rabat – India is set to deliver a significant quantity of COVID-19 vaccines to several countries, including Morocco. Reuters quoted India’s foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who announced that the Indian government will export COVID-19 vaccine doses to Morocco and Brazil, starting Friday. India will export the vaccines developed by UK-based drugmaker AstraZeneca and Oxford University. “In keeping with this vision, we have responded positively to requests for supply of Indian manufactured vaccines from countries across the globe, starting with our neighbours,” said the Indian minister. He said that the supply of commercially contracted quantities will commence from Friday, “starting with Brazil and Morocco, followed by South Africa and Saudi Arabia.” The vaccines, however, are manufactured in India’s Serum Institute, considered one of the largest producers of vaccines across the world. Frustration and concerns mounted among Moroccans after vaccination campaign delay. Morocco’s government announced in November of last year that it had secured 65 million doses of the vaccine against COVID-19, vowing to start the vaccination campaign by early December 2020. Many weeks later, however, whenever government officials received questions regarding the delay, senior executives would maintain that the country has not yet received any of the doses the government has ordered. Morocco’s Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani said this week that Moroccan health authorities are still uncertain about when they will receive COVID-19 vaccines. “At the international level, everyone is asking for vaccines and orders have reached more than one billion doses. Manufacturers do not have the ability to keep up with all the orders at once,” he argued. In recent days, Morocco confirmed fewer numbers of COVID-19 cases than in mid-2020. To date, Morocco has reported 463,706 COVID-19 cases, including 8,076 deaths, and 439,301 recoveries.

  20. Ask Eartha: Tips to maintain a sustainable lifestyle with a new baby I recently had a baby, and my friends keep recommending all this stuff that I’m not even sure I need. Do you have any tips to be less wasteful? If you enjoy living a sustainable lifestyle, there is no reason to stop once you have a baby! Your desire to leave the world a better place becomes even more meaningful when you have kids. Modern marketing, and maybe even other moms, might tell you that you need a lot of stuff: clothing, toys, baby products, furniture — the list goes on. But a lot of stuff means a lot of waste. Many baby items are used for only a few months before they become outgrown or are no longer needed and disposed of. So what is an eco-conscious mom to do? Even though it can feel like an overwhelming task, there are small, but impactful, things every parent can do to leave a smaller footprint. Ditch single-use items As soon as your bundle of joy enters the world, all your old eco-friendly habits might seem to come to a screeching halt. With young kids, convenience will sometimes win, and that’s OK. Baby food is a great example. Making your own is simple — think mashed avocado — but sometimes even that feels like too much. When you do choose convenience, go for glass jars instead of squeeze pouches. Not only can you recycle them, but they’re also great for storing small portions of baby food when do you have time to make your own. If you can, opt for cloth diapers and wipes. While it can be costly up front, you will save loads of money over the course of diapering, especially if you have more than one child. When you need a disposable option, several brands operate their facilities with sustainability in mind and others support environmental causes. Many brands marked as eco-friendly can be safer and gentler on your baby’s skin, but it is important to research the details for yourself. Disposable diapers are just that, so beware of bold marketing claims. Shop second hand It is a myth that babies need a lot of stuff. They need love, care and some essential items like a place to sleep, clothing and nourishment. From bottles and furniture to toys and clothing, many of these essential items can be purchased second hand. Not only is it good for the environment, but you also will save cash in the process. It might surprise you the amount of baby stuff you can get in practically new condition because items are used for only a short time. If second hand is not possible, opt for durability. Good-quality clothes and toys last for multiple children, meaning you can sell or donate items instead of throwing more stuff into the landfill. Make sustainability a family affair The best gift you can give your child is including them in your sustainable practices, sharing why it matters and raising them with an eco-conscious mindset. Lead by example, whether it is turning the water off while you brush your teeth, turning lights out when you leave a room or creating a kid-friendly recycling space to thoughtfully sort bottles and cans. Make sustainability fun, something that the whole family can do, like getting outdoors and creating a sense of wonder for the natural world. The more a child is exposed to nature, the more likely they are to find ways to protect and enjoy it when they are grown up. Challenge each other to pick up new sustainable traditions like gathering old toys to donate before the holidays or creating a sustainable storytime to explore environmental topics.

  21. Nissan will build batteries in UK to sustain Sunderland plant Nissan will build EV batteries in the UK in order to comply with the terms of the Brexit deal and has committed to the future of its Sunderland factory. Batteries for the top-rung 62kWh version of the Leaf electric hatchback are currently produced in Japan and imported to the UK, while lower-capacity 40kWh units are built at Sunderland. Shifting all battery production to the UK will mean Nissan avoids incurring tariffs on the 70% of Leaf models built for export under the terms of the new trade deal, which states that at least 55% of a vehicle's material value must come from the UK or EU to avoid penalties. Speaking to the BBC, Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta said: "The Brexit deal is positive for Nissan. Being the largest auto maker in the UK, we are taking this opportunity to redefine auto-making in the UK." "It has created a competitive environment for Sunderland, not just inside the UK but outside as well. We've decided to localise the manufacture of the 62kWh battery in Sunderland so that all our products qualify [for tariff-free export to the EU]. "We are committed to Sunderland for the long term under the business conditions that have been agreed." It has yet to be confirmed whether the decision will create more jobs at the factory, where 6000 people are directly employed in the production of the Leaf, Qashqai and Juke. Last week, Nissan UK managing director Andrew Humberstone told dealers nationwide that the Brexit deal "finally gives us some certainty and enables us to plan for the future success of our collective operations across the region”. Nissan had said that it would be unable to commit to the Sunderland factory in the event of a no-deal Brexit, with the possibility of heavy tariffs making exports financially unviable. Sunderland was made the central hub of Nissan's European operations last year as part of the company's plan to "leverage the alliance" it has with Renault and Mitsubishi. As part of the strategy, it has been suggested Renault could move production of its Captur and Kadjar SUVs - which share their underpinnings with the Juke and Qashqai - to the Wearside site. According to the Financial Times, Nissan could also bring new models to Sunderland. Citing "people familiar with the company's planning," the FT reports that Sunderland is currently running at just over half its potential capacity and names the new X-Trail and Ariya EV as models that could be produced locally. Nissan previously scrapped plans to build the X-Trail in the UK in 2019, blaming a drop in demand for diesel and pre-Brexit uncertainty. The company has now said it's "satisfied" with the terms of the deal, and plans to expand its UK output could reverse the decision on the X-Trail. A decision on the future of the Cheshire factory is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

  22. Saracens: Covid-19 cases cause cancellation of Doncaster friendly Saracens have been forced to forfeit their latest friendly against Doncaster Knights after two of their academy players tested positive for Covid-19. Contact tracing has meant a further 16 players must isolate following the latest round of testing. Injuries, suspensions and other isolations mean they are unable to field a side with 34 players ruled out. The former Premiership and European champions were due to face Doncaster at Castle Park on Saturday. It was the second fixture in the Trailfinders Challenge Cup as Sarries, Doncaster and Ealing Trailfinders play each other in a round-robin format in preparation for the delayed Championship season which is set to begin on 6 March. "The club did everything it could in its attempts to name a 23, but two additional players being contacted to isolate meant this was not possible," a Saracens statement said. As a result of the cancellation, Doncaster have been awarded four points and Saracens two. Ealing beat Saracens 27-26 on Saturday in the first fixture as England number eight Billy Vunipola played the full 80 minutes. Saracens were relegated from the Premiership last season because of persistent salary cap breaches. Eight of their players remain unavailable for selection through suspension after breaching coronavirus rules while on Barbarians duty in October. The start of the 2020-21 Championship season has already been delayed twice due to Covid-19 restrictions. The 12-team league will be split into two conferences from March with the winners of each playing a two-legged final for the right to earn promotion to the Premiership.

  26. Destiny 2 Will Let You Pick Your Loot Rewards Next Season With Umbral Engrams More changes to loot and rewards are coming to Destiny 2 with the start of its next content season on February 9. Bungie just announced that in addition to changes to certain activities and refreshed rewards on the Moon and in the Dreaming City, Season 13 will see the return of Umbral Engrams to the game, along with the ability to choose what kind of weapons and armors you can claim from them. Bungie ran down the changes in its This Week at Bungie blog post, outlining some changes happening with the start of Destiny 2's next content season. We last saw Umbral Engrams in the Season of Arrivals, where they were a major part of seasonal activities. Using a new item in the Tower called the Prismatic Recaster, players were able to determine which weapons and armor would drop from Umbral Engrams. The system also allowed you to choose which stats your loot would favor--essentially allowing you to more easily get guns and armor with the stats and perks you prefer for your loadout, rather than relying on random drops. Now Playing: Destiny 2: Beyond Light Video Review In Season 13, Umbral Engrams will return, as will the Prismatic Recaster. You'll get Umbral Engrams most often from seasonal activities, Bungie writes, but they'll also drop from random enemy kills and from other game activities. Here's the complete list: Though Umbral Engrams come from a number of sources, they won't be as plentiful as in the Season of Arrivals, however. Drop rates are being reduced, and you'll need to complete a short story mission in order to access the Prismatic Recaster in order to make use of the engrams. On the plus side, it sounds like Umbral Engrams will be here to stay beyond Season 13. Bungie also reiterated a change it had mentioned before the release of the Beyond Light expansion--seasonal activities will persist throughout the rest of the year. That means that, while the Season of the Hunt is set to wrap up in a couple of weeks, you won't lose access to the Wrathborn Hunts, Harbinger mission, and other activities that have been a part of it. That means seasonal loot will also persist throughout Destiny 2's Year 4. The Season of the Hunt was originally designed on Destiny 2's old system, in which content expired with the end of each season, so Bungie warned there might be some weirdness with the Crow going forward (the character will appear in two places in the solar system, for example). But Season 13 has been designed with this persistent state in mind. The idea is to combat players' FOMO--fear of missing out--with expiring content. With the new approach, you'll be free to keep playing everything that drops this year until the release of the next Destiny 2 expansion in November.

  29. Five people died in the fire that occurred Thursday at one of the facilities of the Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, located in western India, from which coronavirus vaccines will be exported to countries such as Brazil. "Five people died" in the fire, Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol, the Indian city where this plant is located, told reporters. The president of the company, Adar Poonawala, sent his condolences to the families from his account on Twitter. Indian televisions showed a huge gray smoke over the headquarters of the Serum Institute, where millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are currently being produced. However, according to these media and the company itself, the fire was declared in a place that is under construction, away from the facilities where vaccines are manufactured. "The vaccine production facilities were not affected and the fire will have no impact on production," a source from the Serum institute told AFP, confirming that "the fire occurred in the new factory under construction." Neither the police nor the company have ruled so far on the causes of the fire. In total, India plans to export and in some cases donate 20 million doses, to countries in South Asia, Latin America, Africa and Central Asia. Since Wednesday, the first shipments have already left for Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Nepal. Vaccine shipments to Brazil have been delayed several times and last week, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro admitted there was "political pressure" on the Indian government to prioritize vaccinating its inhabitants. Faced with the successive delays, Bolsonaro sent a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting "the urgent supply of the two million doses." Adar Poonawalla, the president of Serum, told the Times of India newspaper that he will supply the two million doses to Brazil in two weeks. The "pharmacy of the world" India, with 1,300 million inhabitants, is, in figures, the second country in the world most affected by covid-19, after the United States, with 152,869 deaths and 10.6 million infections, but its mortality rate is low. The country launched one of the world's most ambitious vaccination campaigns on Saturday, to immunize 300 million people through July. In early January, two vaccines were approved in the country: Covishield, developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford and produced by the Serum Institute; and Covaxin, manufactured by local company Bharat Biotech. The Serum Institute, founded in 1966 by Cyrus Poonawalla, the father of the current president of the company, produces 1.5 billion doses of vaccines a year, making it the world's leading producer, even before the new coronavirus broke out. Vaccines against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, mumps, measles and rubella leave the factory and are exported to more than 170 countries. "The world's pharmacy will accept the challenge of covid-19," assured the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, S. Jaishankar, on his Twitter account.

  30. Italian police have recovered a 500-year-old copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s 16th century Salvator Mundi painting of Jesus Christ that was stolen from a Naples church during the pandemic without the priests even realizing it was gone. The discovery was made when Naples police working on a bigger operation found the painting hidden in an apartment. Police chief Alfredo Fabbrocini said the apartment owner was detained after he offered a “less than credible” explanation that he had “casually” bought it at a market. The painting is a copy of the Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World) by Leonardo that sold for a record $450 million at a Christie’s auction in 2017. The unnamed bidder was later identified as a Saudi royal who purportedly purchased it on behalf of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It was supposed to have been unveiled a year later at the museum, but the exhibition was delayed indefinitely and the work hasn’t been seen in public since. The copy, attributed to the Leonardo school but not the Renaissance artist himself, had been housed in a small museum in a side chapel of the Basilica of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples, which had been closed during the coronavirus pandemic. Fabbrocini said the discovery was particularly satisfying “because we resolved a case before it was created.” He explained: “The painting was found but its custodian hadn’t realised it was stolen.” The painting depicts a robed Jesus holding a crystal orb and gazing directly at the viewer. The San Domenico basilica says the painting was probably made by a Leonardo student in the 1520s and purchased by Giovan Antonio Muscettola, an adviser to Emperor Charles V and ambassador to the papal court. It was housed in the basilica’s Muscettola family chapel. It was restored prior to being exhibited in a 1983-1984 show “Leonardo and Leonardism in Naples and Rome.”

  31. The 21-year-old helped the Blues into the semi-finals of the Continental Cup on Wednesday with a stunning strike against Manchester City When Chelsea signed Niamh Charles from Liverpool in the summer, there were a lot of eyebrows raised. Charles had just been relegated with Liverpool, scoring just twice in 13 starts and creating less than one chance per game on average. While those numbers were no doubt impacted by the Reds’ general struggles, few expected the youngster to get many minutes for the recently crowned Women’s Super League champions, particularly given how stacked the Blues’ squad is in those forward positions. But though chances have been rare for Charles, it’s not stopped her shining. On Wednesday night, she had her biggest moment yet in a Chelsea shirt, scoring a sensational 90th-minute equaliser to send a Continental Cup quarter-final tie with Manchester City to extra time. Emma Hayes’ side looked down and out when Lauren Hemp put City 2-1 up in the 85th minute, but Charles, subbed on late in the second half, suddenly produced a moment that showed exactly why the club signed her. Teeing herself up perfectly with a great first touch on her chest, she struck the ball perfectly on the volley to send it looping over the outstretched Karen Bardsley and into the top corner. What followed was historic: Chelsea were 4-2 victors in extra time, sealing their first ever win at the City of Football Academy on their 10th visit. Two more substitutes made sure of the win, with Guro Reiten scoring the third before teeing up Sophie Ingle for a stunning fourth, with Hayes putting the win down to “the depth of the squad”, before singling out Charles for praise. “With players like Niamh Charles, the work she does in training to get herself in positions, she's priming herself for that moment,” she said. “She has been unbelievable in the training environment and she's been patient, she's been quiet, she hasn't said anything when she hasn't been in the team, she's just kept at it. “I'm telling you, that whole dressing room is over the moon for her, just like it will be Sophie Ingle, because sometimes the quiet ones don't get all the credit.” This season, Charles has played five league games, starting just once – but she’s got one goal, one assist and is creating a chance for a team-mate every 23 minutes. She might not be leading the league with stats, but the glimpses she has shown were enough to earn a handful of England call-ups at the end of 2020. The Lionesses didn’t play any competitive fixtures in that time due to a number of coronavirus-related reasons, denying Charles a first senior cap, but she thrived in the team’s in-house friendlies, even when playing as a right-back at times, rather than her more natural roles as a playmaker or a winger. On Wednesday, she discovered a new position too, playing the last 15 minutes as a No.9 for Chelsea. “I think she could play full-back, she could play out wide, she could play up top,” Hayes said. “England have got a cracker on their hands. “She's playing with world-class players every day, so your application and your attitude have to be spot on because it's easy to fold. I have to put Jessie Fleming in the same category. “Those two people have been diligent and patient in their work and they're in a world=class team, so it's not going to be easy for them. “But I promise you this: those two people will find plenty of opportunities playing for this team because of how they apply themselves on a daily basis and how respected they are in the dressing room, because of how hard they work and contribute to the team and sometimes without even getting picked on a weekly basis.” That win over Man City sent Chelsea into the semi-finals of the Conti Cup, keeping them fighting on four fronts. As well as the league, they are into the last 16 of the Women’s Champions League and will have Women’s FA Cup fixtures later this season, the competition currently on pause due to all grassroots football in England being suspended. With all of those fixtures on Chelsea’s calendar, Charles will no doubt get plenty of chances to shine. With the manner in which she’s grabbing those opportunities with both hands at the moment too, Wednesday night’s strike will be the first of many memorable moments as a Chelsea player.

  32. The US’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara puts immense pressure on France to follow suit, argued Moroccan political analyst Samir Bennis. According to the foreign policy expert, France needs to officially recognize Morocco’s territorial integrity, or else it might lose its position as a privileged partner of Morocco in favor of the US. Bennis made the statement during the sixth Morocco Day event, held online on January 18, in response to a question about the future of Morocco-France relations, in light of the American support of Morocco in Western Sahara. “France should be worried about its interests in the region because, with the US’ recognition of the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, Morocco is in a better and stronger position than ever before,” Bennis said. “France used to draw the Sahara card in order to pressure Morocco into striking this deal or that, but, with the US’ recognition, France will be overtaken by the US,” he continued. Bennis argued that the time when France used to monopolize investment deals in Morocco is over. In the future, he predicted, Morocco will not have to exclusively rely on France to attract foreign investments. “Morocco is a sovereign state and it has proven that over and over again over the past few years,” the expert said, stressing that Morocco’s position on the global stage has become significantly stronger over the past decade. “It is important for France to take bold and clear action and to show resolute and clear support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara,” Bennis declared. “It is not enough for France, nor Spain, which both share historical responsibility in the conflict, to say that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan can be the basis of a political solution. They have to follow in the footsteps of the US and say that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is the only basis of the political solution.” The political analyst believes that France’s decision about Western Sahara will shape the future of its bilateral partnerships with Morocco: “The ball now is in France’s court.” Unless France officially recognizes Morocco’s territorial integrity, Morocco will focus on forging partnerships with other countries, notably the US and the UK, Bennis predicted. “I think there is a trend in Morocco to open up more to the US and other countries, because Morocco does not want to be dependent on one or two countries. It wants to diversify because when you diversify you are on a stronger footing than when you depend on one or two countries,” he said. “It is in the best interest of France to hurry and show willingness to support Morocco in a bold and unambiguous way. Otherwise, it will be overtaken by the US, and maybe the UK as well,” he emphasized.

  34. All UK travel corridors, which allow arrivals from some countries to avoid having to quarantine, have now closed. All travellers arriving in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test Travellers arriving in the UK, whether by boat, train or plane, also have to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test to be allowed entry. The test must be taken in the 72 hours before travelling and anyone arriving without one faces a fine of up to £500. All passengers will still be required to quarantine for up to 10 days. The isolation period can be cut short with a negative test after five days. The government has said the travel corridor closure will be in force until at least 15 February. Under the new rules, travellers arriving from the Falklands, St Helena and Ascension Islands are exempt. Those arriving from some Caribbean islands are exempt until 04.00 GMT on Thursday 21 January. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC'S Andrew Marr Show on Sunday that Public Health England would be stepping up checks on travellers who must self-isolate. He said enforcement checks at borders would also be "ramped up" and added that asking all arrivals to self-isolate in hotels was a "potential measure" the government was keeping under review. Earlier, the government announced that a financial support scheme for airports in England would open this month in response to the new travel curbs. Aviation minister Robert Courts said the aim was to provide grants of up to £8m per applicant by the end of this financial year. Industry groups have warned there was only so long airports could "run on fumes", following the announcement of the new quarantine rules. In a tweet, Mr Courts said the Airport and Ground Operations Support Scheme "will help airports reduce" additional costs faced due to the pandemic and that further details would follow soon. The scheme was first announced in November but without a start date. In a statement at the time, the Airport Operators Association said the scheme would be a relief. However, it said support equivalent to business rates would only go so far and with the pandemic crisis deepening, a broader package of support was needed for all four nations, to see the sector through the next few months. AOA chief executive Karen Dee said the measures would "provide much-needed support to many embattled airports, helping them through the challenging months ahead". A ban on travellers from South America, Portugal and Cape Verde also came into force on Friday, having been imposed over concerns about a new variant identified in Brazil. New variants causing concern have previously been identified in the UK and South Africa, with many countries imposing restrictions on arrivals from both nations. Scientists fear the variants seen in South Africa and Brazil may interfere with the effectiveness of vaccines and evade parts of the immune system. The travel industry has said closing the travel corridors was understandable due to the health emergency, but warned it would deepen the crisis for the sector. Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said the system had been "a lifeline for the industry" last summer but "things change and there's no doubting this is a serious health emergency". He said he assumed the government would remove the latest restrictions as soon as it was safe. "We've had no revenue now effectively for 12 months, give or take a few months in the summer last year. If we're going to have an aviation sector coming out of this we need to open up in the summer," he told the BBC. The Department for Transport has said it is supporting the travel industry with an extension to the furlough scheme until the end of April, business rates relief and tax deferrals. With all parts of the UK under strict virus rules amid high levels of infection, only essential travel is permitted. On Sunday, another 671 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test were reported in the UK, and a further 38,598 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus.
